Age of Ice and Blood: A Pathfinder System Heroic Fantasy Quest

I was going to commented that DP has mentioned at least twice (once replying to Goldfish about the ship having barnacles or something from 'modern earth') and earlier today and we should investigate this but

Wow :V

"No... no... fools... fools!" the thing that might have once been a rat screeched in a voice high with terror, as its blood fell on the circle it had made, then something happened which would haunt Antonio's nightmares.
"Blood..." the woman said suddenly. At Inge's alarmed look she explained. "Human blood, that is why it attacked the man, to get reagents for a ritual worked upon the whole ship."
What was the ritual circle for? Is the Eldritch quality a product of the ritual? How does that even work?

The ritual was to make more ratlings and not incidentally drain the magic that made the ship eldritch. As for why your ship is that way to begin with, well it has been shining with magi since you first met the Stout Folk at least so likely you picked that up in the passage between worlds.

So... does this mean the Rat King is dealt with?

Can anyone tell me what just happened?!

Is our ship alive?!

This isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Eldritch doesn't mean evil or madness inducing. It's just...differently abled...metaphysically speaking, with energies from beyond the boundaries of reality and sanity...

The Marcella could end up being self-repairing, self-propelled, maybe it will be able to fly, etc. We already know she's picked up anti-rodent capabilities. She's been a good ship so far, so we shouldn't abandon her until she proves that she's dangerous. That said, I think holding on to the Fortuna for a bit longer might not be a bad idea.

What I am trying to understand is why it took our expedition for the ship to do anything. It could have grabbed the rat anytime, and we'd be none the wiser.

Is it the completion of the ritual circle that compelled it to act against what could potentially harm it?

Well, I guess it doesn't changes much, besides a little more awareness for why we call our ship a "she".

According to Inge and Esha, who are far from experts, but the best you have still, it was probably spilled blood on the ritual circle probably, that was a magically significant act and the key the title is referring to.

I think the Marcella acted in part because of the ritual, but mostly because Inge had already injured the Ratling with a Snowball spell. If she boosted the caster level, it could have hit the Ratling for 5d6 damage, and since it only had 19 HP, it could have easily been on death's door, attracting the ship's interest and appetite.

EDIT: Or what DP said.

Look. There are talking horses, talking trees, talking rats...is it really so weird to have a (not yet but soon (TM)) talking ship? :V

*goes to sleep*
*wakes up to find this*
Holy shit, did not see this coming.
[x] Question Inge and Esha about what exactly is going on here.

How cool would it be if the Marcella becomes self-rowing? Or if her oars could turn into legs and she could walk on land? Or lash out like deadly wooden tentacles at attackers?

She really could become the Danger Boat.

...look I'm not accusing you or anything DP, but a Knight, which travels with a Scholar, found a Druid, then a Dhampir, then an Eldritch Abomination???

Antonio is Viserys, it is known!

So a ship rat if you don't mind the reference? Usually think of a ship girl.

Edit: No wait the ship ate the rat. Maybe the ship is still one.

That's why Stout Folk were so freaked out.
But "Eldritch" is not necessary a bad thing. It's better to investigate Marcella's intentions before trying to purge it.

On a positive note for anyone worried about the Marcella becoming an Aberration, I don't think that will be an issue. It should instead become an Outsider.
Type: The base creature's type changes depending whether the eldritch creature comes from the deeper reaches of space or outside the known planes. If it is from space, the base creature's type changes to aberration. Otherwise, the creature's type changes to outsider, and it gains the extraplanar subtype.
