I'd argue magical senses are probably better for Alchemy as well. Voice of things feels more like a psychometry ability.
I agree that it sounds like a psychometry ability, but I consider that psychometry would be more useful for Alchemy since it would allow us to analyze a deeper analysys of an aobjest, how it was made or which kind of magic is using, and since Alchemy is basically the creation of magical objects I think that a detailed analysys of an object, magic or object, woukd llow us to better reproduce it´s effects on an object

Plus an explorer/archeologist with psychometry is totally broken...

[X] Voice of things I – This is something that you can not explain, nor control. At times, you hear [sense] [feel] [taste] something that lays underneath the fabrics of reality. There is meaning hidden in it, but you do not know what it entails. Objects and beings alike can at times start this ability of yours and gift you insights that you would otherwise never have.

[X] Magic Sense I – You remember feeling the magic of your brothers. There was warmth and familiarity. Underneath your senses there had been something else, waiting to wake. It would allow you to feel that, what is always around and inside you. You have felt Sally-Ann's magic once before, because it was so vibrant and powerful. Now, you will start your journey to develop your ability to sense all magic.

To explore the surface with Sense, or enter the depths with Voice.

And to be frank... I don't want Jacob to disappear into the depths, interacting only with the fae, the monstrous and eldritch.
I want Jacob to find deeper meaning and mystery in people around him.

I doubt he'll ever have interest in other people that won't have understanding as their fundament.
Giving him a reason to disconnect from voices of his peers to listen to the cosmos is... it feels sad.

Man, you are looking way too deep onto this... We are not "choosing about the depths or the surface" we are simply choosing a new sensory ability for Jacob

To put it on layman´s terms, we are choosing between magesight or psychometry.

Both options are really useful and there are strong arguments for each option, buth there is no need to be so overdramtic about it...

And by the way, @8th pirate king you need to close the bracket so that the tally will count your vote

One thing to keep in mind is that this sense is tiered. This will evolve and grow into something stronger, and one question to keep in mind is which one has more room for growth. It's explicitly stated we will never control the voices and that is kinda what makes my mind up, mana sensing will help us be a much more conventional arch-mage. Voices would help us with the less conventional aspects, and would be something we attune to rather than control. Wouldn't be as reliable imo. Definitely room for argument for both choices though and I wouldn't be upset if either wins.

That is the problem that I have with Magic Sense... Whereas it is extremely useful it is also but it is also much more conventional than Voice of things, which seems more interesting and unique...

The goblins being offshoot of humans make sense. Since we have at least 1 example of human goblin cross breeding. We also have another in Fluer Delacour (damn autocorrect keeps changing it) who was pet Veela. So that means something or someone twisted humans into goblins, trolls, Veela and other magical creatures. Which when you think about it is both sad and normal. Humans have always oppressed other humans but in modern time they have the excuse of them looking different to oppress them. Wow we have a magical caste system in place.

Edit which makes me wonder if the humans who were turned wish it or had it done against their wills.

In the end you decided on a strategy that Isaac had come up winters ago. It had allowed your brother to hold an entire hill with a much smaller force for hours, while the rest of you had circled around the enemy.

"Look to my coming on the fifth day, and at dawn, look east"

We didn't get the cavalry charge this chapter, so maybe next purview, we'll see that's how the giants will be taken down.

This time, your voice felt louder, only later would you realize that Lobo had started imitating your brothers magic, pushing your words into the minds of your troops.
Valentino's magic drowned out the fear you had been feeling just moments prior, gifting you clarity and focus.
A Basques without her brother's mind magic forcing her to bravery and strength, would have lost courage at what she was seeing in their faces.

You know, this chapter is really making me want to study Occulmeny. It most fanfics, "mind magic" is literally just look into someone's head, but here it's being used to rally, bolster, and command troops and it's freaking awesome.

"My brothers and sisters, trust the man to your left and the woman to your right; for today there is only the way forward."
To your left and right, men and women were falling back again, losing all ground that you had regained with flesh and bone.

I love that symmetry.

Instead of following the connection, you simply destroyed his mind.

Again, Mind Magic for the win!

It's not really time travel though

The journal's basically a magical Animus complete with skill bleeding.

Now we learn that these seem to be the origins of the first Goblins and Trolls. That they used to be Human but were twisted into something else by some sort of dark magic.

Ok, I actually missed that and one that is horrifying-also even more Tolken-esque-but actually has some unsettling revelations about Goblins, Trolls, and House Elves. Like imagine if we retro-make the glyphs and revert a Goblin to a human. Imagine the social ramifications.

In the memory, it took a combination of Magical Sense and Voices to take down the Centerpiece with Sense being needed to open herself to the magic to see it, Voice being used to trace it to the Centerpiece, and Sense again being used to crush him.

Overall, I think Voice might be stronger because of being esoteric, but Magical Sense just enriches the story more.

Just imagine all the beautiful fluff that Tabula can write of Jacob feeling the warm emotions of people's magic. Compared to insightful/cryptic voices, the whole new realm of descriptions and feelings Jacob gets with Magical Sense is unmatched. It'll bring him closer to not just understanding spells but also people.

Remember how he noticed the slight smile from Mcgonagall as she transfigured dragons? Jacob could see how even after all her years of teaching, she still takes pleasure in the wonders of magic. But with Magical Sense, Jacob could feel that joy as well. Not just that, but Tracy's raring fighting spirit or Nelly's grateful servitude. Getting closer to knowing a person's magic is like getting closer to knowing their soul.

Hell, once we start animating things like the clay dolphin, we can start to feel their own burgeoning feelings through the magic in it.

I see it the other way around actually...

The Magical Sense is probably the most overall useful and powerful option because it gives Jacob a better perception of magic in general and it will always be working, making easir to plan around it.

The Voice, on the other hand, is much less reliable since it is somethint outside of the direct control of Jacob, but it gives us the chance of percieving secret insights of places, objects or magic, meaning it is less useful overall but it enrichs the story more, or at least opens more interesting opportunities down the line.

Voice sounds unreliable.

Magic sense seems like something very conventional and more common. I do think it would be useful more often, but the fact that will "gift [Jacob] insights that [he] would otherwise never have" I think fits his character more.

Besides that, it gives the QM a chance to show us interesting lore that we might never find otherwise.
