Hunger is going to have a male peer who doesn't immediately try to kill him

what an excellent plot development

So first, we got confirmation from the Accursed that we're doing well! Yay!

He also thinks we're going to die to the Apocryphal, but eh.

Now, as for our sponsor choices... We have a min-maxer wizard that dumped social and physical to get MAXIMUM PRAXIS, an overconfident fool who otherwise seems pretty cool, and a too-expensive overpowered super-angel that's anime clumsy with her cosmic powers.

Anyway, Cursebearers seem like fun people. Each of the options comes with serious downsides... But given that they're all carrying major curses, this is to be expected. Imagine what Lord Hunger's blurb on one of these would read like.

*She may give Hunger mundane advice, though without the aid of any of her Ordinals. As she is an Ordinal Purist this would consist of assistance that is entirely non-magical. This includes relationship advice, general life advice, Curse-mitigation advice, and instruction in the Ordinal Spiral for either Hunger or one of his party members. It is recommended to select a party member with high Intelligence and Wits. Haeliel will not always be available for consultation; her duties and challenges are commensurate to her might.

Haeliel-senpai, how do we tell a girl that we like her?! :V

Combat type that he is, Wolber still has the Praxis, and so doesn't mind power levels so much. Even if he never scales again, he's unlikely to stop being useful.

Would also be nice to have a proper gross homebody representative in the party, how am I to relate to all these pretty people?

It probably doesn't scale that high normally, but she took TSH.
It's not a function of the Spiral, but rather of Progression! The Final Ordinal caps out far below the level of a High Cursebearer, Haeliel has just used To Shatter Heaven to acquire infinite Attainments augmenting her Ordinals!

Hmm. In that case, it seems like there would exist other High Cursebearers, or those on a similar level, who could be described as "Ordinalists". For that to be a meaningful term, I'd assume they'd use it as at least one of the more significant tools in their arsenal, which is pretty interesting since it doesn't seem that significant as far as systems go.

I have to admit that it's deeply... validating? that the Accursed thinks we merit further investment. Inducting Hunger into this society takes non trivial effort even for the Overgod: to invest that into Hunger suggests his value/interest to the Accursed.

That is really cool.

Anyway, let this be a warning.

Spiking the Apocryphal Curse up by 50% is so dire that Accursed himself shows up and goes 'well you'll need this to probably survive so...'

Cursebearer Strain is no joke, especially with that 'too bad everything you've done up till now is on the verge of being undone' remark

Freiza Saga Goku was still considered a Saiyan, but the gap between him and other Saiyans was vast beyond mentioning...

[X] Daylian Erranthus [Committed, 7 Arete]

I have one argument to make, a second character with Progression means more Blurbs.

I rest my case.

Creating the society and allowing its actions to percolate without provoking proportional or excessive retribution from the Curses in question would be the non-trivial action. Actually inducting a single Cursebearer may still be entirely trivial, though of course the range of actions that qualify as entirely trivial to the Accursed encompasses very nearly all of them.

oh look, cursebearer's strain made our circumstances so bad we had to get bailed out

yeah, lol

if only hunger could take his own advice...

Curses: The Geas of Indenture [Complete Mitigation], The Affliction of Slumber [Mitigation Stage VII], The Doom of the Martyr [Mitigation Stage VII], The Doom of Ineptitude [Mitigation Stage VII], The Apocryphal Curse [Mitigation Stage VII]

For even a High Cursebearer to have only attained Stage 7 mitigation, that would mean the scaling involved is harsher than what even Progression can keep up with. We should be infinitely more careful with the Mitigation slots we've earned because they'll likely start drying up massively.

this isn't what i got out of the update at all

Alternatively, we're likely to survive a +50% Apocryphal proc, as evidenced by the Accursed's continued investment in us moving forward. He rewards hard work, right? Would we get an invitation to Cursebearer Ikea if we'd signed up for 5 weeks of vacation instead of Doing Our Utmost?

[X] The Seraph of Heroism, Haeliel [Basic, 50 Arete]

Ordinal Spiral, High Cursebearer, 50 goddamn Arete...

If there was a time to go crazy, it's now. Gimme my list of Ordinals!

God, getting relationship advice from a High Cursebearer would be pitch-perfect, and the practical benefits of Haeliel's aid speak for themselves: resurrecting Catherine safely, a panic button for truly devastating Apocryphal procs, making Gisena into an Ordinalist... but that price tag is painful. I don't know what I want; as expected of fellow Cursebearers, they're all appealing.
Daylian has already expended all of his temporal reversions, but retains access to his well-honed control over Lazulite itself.
Yeah, looks like the buffer of do-overs didn't last long in the face of Daylian's Hubris. Apparently multiple deaths still qualifies as getting lucky, that's a Crowning Curse for you. I hesitate to mention it because this decision point blows all other considerations out of the water, but Daylian's geomancy deals with the stuff of 'immortal myth' and could likely solve Niflel's funding problems.

[X] Wolber Strobe [Committed, 12 Arete]

Mainly because of the 3 he seems to be the most... competent? No, I think wise.

The first is hubristic and the third is inept by the curses they bear. At this Wolber is just someone we will dislike. And just because we don't like someone doesn't mean we can't take his advice.

And the fact that he is not a Progression Type is not really that important given he has the Praxis and is actually extremely competent in it to the point that not matter how strong his opponent in his hits will sting.

Hunger already has the muscle and firepower covered. Now we need someone that can give good advice.
