Build you some Hunter-Killer Drones so you can search and destroy. Gotta C O N S U M E.

WWVD? I'm not actually sure, but it'd probably be awesome so I'll just do what I want.

'What Would Viktor Do' is a time old adage for Nine to follow. And we can't dispute that it has certainly helped make him s t r o n k. Mook-wise at least.

That said, it's also important to take some notes from early-game Naruto. Nine has some fun techs that he can overcharge thanks to the relatively higher Output he has thanks to FF. And getting more Output would definitely let him throw around more of his weight. Of course, had he more Control to temper it, then recent fights might have ended differently.

Build choices, as we've seen from Hunger's own quest, will definitely impact future choices since it affects what kind of missions Nine can be sent out on.

That said, a lot of the restraints imposed to what Nine can get from Headquarters wouldn't (?) be a problem if he were to strike out on his own. Not to mention the free Apostle Pick, which may come in handy in the future should actions be taken to gather more strength be it in the form of more Progression or additional skills such as [Devour] as bestowed from the Benefactor.

<R> Three picks. Large chance of encounter.
<R> Silkspinning.
<R> Replication.
<R> Destructive Analysis.

Matter analysis and magic silk creation? Sounds good to me. Depends to a certain extent on what is available locally in terms of materials, but will hopefully be useful both in terms of utility, combat, and as trade goods.

[X] Purchase It
[X] Cast Line

While I do prefer Bait, people for some reason want to take ADS with it. Idk why is "pick options that work well together" a hard concept to understand, but it apparently is.

So Cast Line is a go, I guess.

<A> Two Picks. Moderate chance of encounter.
<A> Destructive Analysis. Design a combined awakened/dreaming module which breaks engulfed physical matter down into informatic matrices, providing information about its native ontology and specific construction. Prone to failure when applied to extremely dense or complex matter. xxMind
<A> Deletion. -1 Satisfaction. Requires Destructive Analysis. Refine the Destructive Analysis algorithms with the intent of weaponization, providing increased speed, degrees of freedom, and reliability of destruction at the expense of no retention of the informatic content. xxFierce

I just want the thing that says Delete Thy Enemy, really. Control and Alt are all that's left to complete this function.

[X] Don't Purchase It
[X] Bait and Tackle
[X] Attempt Diplomacy

Bait and tackle winning means we really
Should keep our Arete flexible, we can always buy ADS during the prep time in bait and tackle if no artifact or ally is worth the Arete cost.

Choose up to three developments. Ruby currently has 2 Satisfaction.

I'd go with the 2 pick encounter chance and the shapeshifting line. Since they're already a Combat-type, maybe they can get some basic mitigation of their Flagrant by shifting into a smaller form! Even a basic 12.5% hunger reduction would be great, or they could get something like +40% satiety and reduced hunger recurrence rate after consuming a specific type of uncommon / valuable food.

<> Formflow. -1 Satisfaction. Constant, dynamic body control operated by complete parallel thread. xBody, xAdapt
<> Silkflow. Requires Formflow and Silkspinning. Augments the formflow thread with spinneret modules, allowing for the deployment of dreamsilk mass as part of formflow. xBody, xxAdapt
<> Silkspinning. Design a combined awakened/dreaming module which gathers informatic dross and converts into physical matter. Qualities and traits of dreamsilk depend on local ontology. Dreamsilk never provides nourishment to the Cursebearer. xMind, xArtful
I just want Silkflow right now - it looks like it multiplies the hp bar considerably, and offers some really cool composition-shifting options. Does that mean I need to vote for the three-pick, or are developments separate?

[X] Bait and Tackle

I kind of want to buy ADS anyway, even if it might not be the most efficient. I guess I'll just leave that part of the vote aside for a time.

ravioli ravioli, how much arete is in our pocketoli

It took a special breed of individual to be capable of moving past such definitive loss. To tarry onwards wholeheartedly, fueling themselves with the memories and lessons imbedded by those dearly departed. Nine held no delusions that he was such an individual. Two muddled weeks had elapsed in the blink of an eye, with the mercenary only being vaguely aware of such developments.

Even his missions as of late, ones that would have taken even the intrepid strongmen weeks to accomplish, had been completed within the span of days. Far as it was from a record-breaking performance, the results of his actions nonetheless garnered the attention of more than just the rank and file. The masses had the right of it; it was as expected from one of the few dogs the Director had left in his employ.

Hence why he found himself standing across the Director in the latter's office. Stood tall while focused in the empty space in front of him. Off to the side was Doctor Fernandez, rifling through the contents of his worn clipboard. His wardrobe as disheveled as his handwriting. How the man could withstand his own wretched appearance continued to addle Nine's thought process. The fact that Director August, the epitome of professional etiquette, did nothing to reprimand the doctor only worsened it.

"You certainly find yourself easily distracted by the most mundane of things, Nine."

The mercenary had enough common sense to appear sheepish; August crinkled his eyes as he waved it off. "I suppose you must have an idea as to why I summoned you here." The Director sat himself on the edge of his table as he faced Nine, brows furrowed and lips pursed. "It is no exaggeration to say that we have lost many capable operatives against the Rotbeast. And though the Elixir Sovereign continues to provide us assistance per the established agreement, it is far from enough."

Well manicured hands cradled a chiseled jaw as elbows perched themselves upon August's knee. "We are doomed to fail not only our quotas but to breach on-going contracts should the current situation persist. Our hands have thus been forced to temporarily increase the burden placed on our able operatives."

"As such, we have studiously examined the recent performances of our available operatives and have begun to handout missions to those who have proven themselves capable." Oswald took that as his cue to produce several envelopes from his person, now neatly aligned in front of the red eyed mercenary.

"We'd normally just send ya packin' for whatever's available, lapdog. But as our resident pretty boy explained, we're short on hands and you're the next best thing we've got on board. Details're in the pack." Glasses were removed by trembling fingers, with Oswald doing his level best to get whatever dust was left on the polished lenses.

"And whatever you choose, don't go getting yourself killed alright? Bad enough we lost Viktor; can't go around losing the closest thing he had to a disciple."

-----

Nine has chosen to continue being the [9] Dog of the Director, followed by internalizing the following lessons and experiences [9] Experience and Acumen I, [9] A Mentor's Advice, and [9] Fanged Ferocity II. Resources have been used up, to the point that Nine has found himself with -1.8 Apostle Credits. As such, Nine will be moving forward with a holistic deduction of 18% until the debt has been cleared.

And as far as company benefits go, every capable mercenary seems to have received an off-season promotion. But you know what they say: With longer job titles, come longer assignments. Pick one of the Assignments listed below, and hope Nine's ready for whatever rains may come.

[ ] Off Brand Salvation: "We've been consistently providing aid to some ruined city state or another. We deliver supplies, do trade, and offer muscle to keep the spooky monsters out. 'Course, we've gotten ourselves some unused real estate with what's happened recently. So it's in our best interest to integrate whatever's left of them to bolster our own diminished capacity. Obviously, we didn't pick you for your linguistics."
- Protect the more linguistically talented operatives whose main role is to subvert the remnants of the dilapidated civilization.
- More bodies means less burden for the average rank and file.
- At Nine's current level, the malignant elements within the area barely pose a threat. Unless things go awry, not much fighting is expected. If things do, however, then Nine is the only worthwhile combatant available.
- Estimated Difficulty: B+ (Combat: D~B+)

[ ] Terrorist And Saboteur: "Our counter intelligence teams have decoded systematic correspondence amongst the Fang Empire and multiple well-known and established brigands. Their continued relationship will prove detrimental to our branch if left unattended. You are free to employ whatever methods necessary to rid ourselves an obstacle."
- Effectively a solo mission.
- Off the books; leave no trace of the company's involvement.
- Meant to be a long term mission, albeit Nine will be working with information whose contents may became irrelevant without warning.
- Target rich environment. May provide 1-2 picks worth of advancements, dependent on how many groups are destroyed.
- Estimated Difficulty: A++
- Upon success, receive: +August, ++Viktor

[ ] Mindless Onslaught: "A straightforward task. We'll be dropping you and a few other combat specialists off a recently identified island. It's infested with monsters noted to have quite the catastrophic danger level. Of course, such monsters would carry with them rare materials and greatly worthwhile data. Subjugate them by any means necessary, and ensure that our collection teams are unhampered on the way back."
- Off to fight monsters!
- No moral or ethical quandary to worry about.
- Just gotta kill things and harvest them as if you were some hunter of old!
- Experience rich environment. Even when taking into account the other participants, it is possible to acquire 2-3 picks worth of Advancements.
- Estimated Difficulty: S+
- Upon success, receive: +++August, unlocks [Alpha]

Interesting. I wonder if this is an advancement? If it is, I bet it would be pretty neat.

[9] Mindless Onslaught

Well, we took the big power build that specialized in fighting against overwhelming odds, we might as well follow through with that. Credit debt is unfortunate but I imagine a mission of this level would have an update or two of briefing and prep so hopefully we'll have enough time to pay it off. Moreover, with the picks from this and the lack of Credits available, maybe we can work towards unlocking the Blessing tree.

[9] Off Brand Salvation
Though not necessarily my first choice, this seems to provide ample opportunity to safely work off our debt. Even better, it provides a way to do that in a fairly safe way! Nine is not Hunger, who needs to desperately outscale the Apocryphal curse whenever able. Additionally, opportunities for teamwork abound!

Yeah, I haven't really caught much of what was going on with Nine, although the supersoldier thing with the gorilla armor was cool. But I don't mind voting for the mystery box!
[9] Mindless Onslaught

Training was not struggling.
Heresy. That's not very Cut Through of you, Ruby.
They were going to need to stay topped up, they could tell already that the training to reach these new heights would be exhausting, physically and mentally.
Objection withdrawn, carry on. Ruby is cool.

I ain't afraid of no encounter, I'd be all over Spawning if not for the need to invest, Silkflow is too badass, and that simplifies my choice a bit lol.

<R> Three picks
<R> Formflow.
<R> Silkflow
<R> Silkspinning

I'm not gonna lie. Getting Alpha would be pretty swanky. Nine only has Promise, and whatever Base Talent he has.

But you know what else would be pretty swanky? Not Dying. A good reminder, at the moment yeah, that 2 pick fights for Nine are as difficult as 3 pick fights are for Hunger. One can only imagine how bad 3 Pick Fights are gonna be for Nine.

I know y'all miss Viktor but it's still too soon, I think.

Course, imagine having enough picks that you could powerlevel Nine with.

Then again, 18% holistic deficit.

A lot of things to consider further, really.

While I do prefer Bait, people for some reason want to take ADS with it. Idk why is "pick options that work well together" a hard concept to understand, but it apparently is.

So Cast Line is a go, I guess.

A-DS absolutely does help Hunger's performance of Bait and Tackle

+++++ INT and WIS helps his planning bonus.
+++++ LUCK helps him get a summon with genuinely useful powers. The social plusses help him get it on side. The combat plusses make sure he can put it down if that fails.
Increased luck, perception, mobility (from AGI) all help him search for allies/ resources/ quick 1 pick fights. The social and combat plusses make sure he resolves what he finds in his favour.

Note he already has a fuckton of Rank from us investing a fuckton of arete and that helps with all of the above. We invest arete in builds so Hunger can generate successful outcomes without us having to spend it every encounter.

We have seen on other occasions that situationally decisive ally encounters cost about 2 arete. We would be utter fucking mugs as players to fall into an arete inflation spiral by paying much more than that for encounter options that Bait and Tackle generates. Holding onto the 14 arete only encourages us to be fools. Bait and Tackle + A-DS has a better survival and win chance than Cast Line + A-DS so going for the latter because B&T + massive one off splurge isn't winning makes no sense.
