Might have been a rough month, but I've recovered some for more Nine Quest bullshit.

1800 spaghetti strings.

Sleep. Train. Eat.

Eat. Sleep. Train.

Mission. Kill. Kill. Kill. Kill. Kill.

Report. Eat. Sleep.

Did the days feel like weeks? Or did months only feel like days? Everything had melded into a routine since that day, and Nine could scarcely unthread the events from each other. Sprawled against the fragrant sheets, lavender deemed default, and still awake. There were fragments of laughter, echoes in his ears, as he faced the newly painted ceiling. A welcome change from the yellowed surfaces of his old room.

Nine could remember the pleasantries exchanged during the celebration. An indisputable victory against the Rotbeast, a creature of gargantuan proportions whose strength could decimate the entirety of the sovereign. Strangers looked at him with tears in their eyes, gratitude an endless tide. Sundries, tokens, and accessories abound were tossed everywhere. As if the once impending doom and the unfurled casualties never existed.

The sensation of the finest drinks being drained down his gullet, accompanied by stores of food whose taste sent his emotions into frenzied bliss, had long since faded. Expert healers, those they could spare in the after math, had gone around providing healthcare for those that needed it. Though unable to truly rid himself of all his injuries, the reassuring glow that subsumed him had certainly lightened the severity.

It all eventually melded into dancing and songs. A festival of sorts that lifted the spirits of those who still carried one. There had been some downtime allowed, given Nine was part of the last set to head on back to Headquarters. And though he could not stay long enough to experience their joys in full, there were enough memories adjacent to frame it as worth remembering.

If nothing else, seeing Sanae laugh without any reservation was a sight to see. She had lost dear family and beloved friends in the onslaught. Yet their valor and sacrifice were the consequences of their own choice, rather than one built by a string of incidents. And so she was proud, even as bloodied arms wrapped around Nine's neck. Introduced him even, to her tightened circle. As her benefactor too; as a man who had risked life and glory to rescue a faceless stranger.

To be showered with adulation was a scenario Nine had no experience in. He could even remember the furious blush that burned the tips of his ears even. It was the first time in ages that the mercenary could deftly remember that he had enjoyed himself. Infectious was the joy around them that even his breach from mandated decorum found no purchase as the remaining mercenaries boarded the last convoy home.

Perhaps it had been the constant rain of praise, or how everyone's lips were constantly preoccupied with jubilant grins. Even his colleagues on the way back couldn't help but boast of their accomplishments. Of how they took down Rotspawn after Rotspawn. How they deserved a long vacation, fully paid of course, after all the work they put in. Even Nine, taciturn as he was, jeered out his own achievements.

An Elite Rotspawn, brought low primarily by the strength of his arms.

All of them laughed. Patted him on the back, ruffled his hair, and promised that they'd take down an even bigger target after their vacation. It was an atmosphere that Nine thought would last. Said atmosphere became muted the minute the mercenaries entered headquarters. Smiles became forced. Greetings were strained. From clear blue skies and lively landscapes to drab grey ceilings and constrictive hallways. The shift of the environment was as telling as the oppressive emotions that permeated the entirety of the facility.

Nine remembered how everyone received an order to gather in the docking areas. Of how heavy the footsteps struck against the iron grates. Atop the stage was a lone podium, one occupied by the Director. No other stood by his side. A stark contrast to his usual display of power.

The lack of fanfare or pomp should have clued Nine in.

Somber was the Director's voice. Eyes like steel as he addressed the mercenaries under his command. August spoke with conviction, his words that of crystalized truth. That every single one of them had earned this victory. That he was proud of them coming home alive. And how, despite all their preparations, the entire operation had cost them far too many lives. Not just numbers that could be compensated. But people of a Brotherhood forged through adversity, tempered by the blood they have shed.

The wall behind August lit up. It showed a photo of a mercenary Nine had met in passing. One that turned black and white as the Director uttered his name. Another photo appeared. This time, it was one that Nine had worked with recently. The same happened as the first. Then again, and again, and again until angry tears bubbled in everyone's eyes. Others forced them back, presenting a veneer of composure. Those who could not, openly shed their tears as a friend's name was uttered.

He felt his fists clench tighter after every photo that appeared. That man was the strongest of them all. One who carried with him strength insurmountable. What his gut told him was a lie. The other members of the Assault Squad may have perished as well, but he was confident that they weren't as strong as Viktor. Red eyes flashed about. Away from the screen and into the crowd. Rooted as he was, Nine had not lost the ability to look.

It was fine even if the thumping in his ears drowned away the words. He didn't have to hear it because there was nothing to hear. Nine may have felt remorse over the loss of lives but everyone who went knew of the risks. But even then, risk or not, he could trust Viktor to smack his head for freaking out like this. For even doubting him. Nine knew he would make good on his promises. Then make fun of him for not having the balls to fight against giant lizards one on one.

That stupid face plastered on the wall would have laughed at the brat who wanted to play hero.

"Asshole."

His chest heaved as he pulled himself away from memory lane. "He was definitely an asshole, wasn't he?" By his bedside, Promise remained silent. "Went off and got himself killed. And for what?" Nine shook his head as he stood up and took hold of his lance.

"You're right. If I've got the energy to complain, then might as well train."

-----

And we are back with Nine Quest, albeit with something far away from celebrations. Days, weeks, months? Time has certainly passed since the Victory against the Rotbeast, even if Nine can't discern it.

All complications gained from the last few updates have been removed, with Nine once more functioning at 100% combat efficiency. Due to the lack of any solid votes in the previous update, as well as there having been a sizable delay for this one, we'll be opening up again the options.

Nine has certainly kept himself busy, as neither Time nor the Benefactor bothered to wait.

Nine currently has 6 Picks to make use of. 3 gained from the Rotbeast Battle, and another 3 earned in succeeding missions since then. He has also accumulated 5 Apostle Credits.

[X] Purchase It
[X] Bait and Tackle

I mean, you're welcome to dismiss my post if it's inconvenient, but the points stand:

1. The blurb for Cast mentions a risk to Hunger's life, while Bait improves our chances "substantially".
2. ADS has bonuses that are explicitly useful for the goals of Bait, beyond simply being useful as a generic EFB. Trying to inspire mercenaries to risk their life without ADS will be considerably more difficult.

Like, Cast includes a warning that ADS' boost is useful but not game changing:

Conditional on knowing that we're getting ADS, Bait still has the best chance of survival & profit imo.
Dismissing parts of the options that are inconvenient for one's argumentation is par for the course around here.
Still, the +++++All Stats and vastly increased Ruin damage are both still highly relevant against the Armament Fish, especially with Overwhelm - Whiteout. It would give you a vector of offensive power that's at least somewhat effective against the Fish without relying on the Artful Thorn and its swiftly escalating cost per battle.
[ ] Cast Line - The monster's thrashing will cause even further apocalyptic damage in the event of a prolonged engagement; to save the most lives now Hunger must simply slay the beast as fast as possible. Attack directly with Artful Thorn and hope that continuous Thorn activations cripple the monster enough for Hunger's blood debuff to immobilize it, then begin the arduous process of ending its life. Benefits substantially from All-Defeating Stance.
Surviving a solid blow was never in the cards against something that is 'many quadrillions times' Hunger's mass. The point of ADS in this fight is more non-draining damage and the increased margin for error thanks to All-Ruin ablative armor and stat bonuses.

As for safety...
*Likely to improve your odds significantly, though this does yield one further day for the Apocryphal to act, if it was going to
One can hope that Apocrypha will just sit back and watch, but when the GM repeatedly mentions the possibility, I take heed. Especially when it is such a fitting moment for her to intervene. Bait is safer in normal circumstances, but that isn't something I'm willing to bet on, especially not when we aren't exploiting Bait's advantages for all they're worth.

On a separate note, I'm curious how we're going to continue developing Signs when finally come to the Human Sphere. The plan was to make Adorie do it like Gisena is supposed to research Graces (as soon as she has the time for it), but she's going to be busy administering our kingdoms in the VR. Do the Tears allow remote communication?.. I don't think there are many magics that would support reliable transmission of substantial amounts of information across dimensional borders...

Basically, ADS' utility in actual fight is severely limited, and fact that it has some effect on prep doesn't mean that it's anywhere near as efficient as spending on actually specialized options.

The DA is neat, but all but crippling for teamwork, and I don't think Nine is ready to strike out on his own. So Fanged Ferocity II it is, with some more Output for [REDACTED] and a dollop of mental stats because we know what happens when you skip brain day.

As cool as the DA is, it's thematically inconsistent with the part of Nine I find the most interesting-- the Promise and the willingness to sacrifice ones' self for another.

Stacking Output feels sensible to me, and Nine seems to be in need of some brainmeats.

The Benefactor's Blessing stat ups are incredible for their price, which is why we should get all the pre-reqs out of the way as soon as we possibly can. Kinda boring but sometimes you just have to take your medicine. Get our statline up to scratch before we start picking up more shinies, even if they're super tempting.

Blessing is great, but we have to drop four picks to pick it, which makes me sad because Experience and Acumen is so cool. Okay, thinktime.

It's 5 picks for +++Agi, +++++Might. 8 stats. Whereas Thunderstrike/Advice/XP are 3 stats for 2 picks- 7.5 Stats for 5 picks, ish. So despite how good Blessing itself is, rushing down the tree is barely more effective than loading up on 2-picks (unless you're super attached to +Phys, which is totally fair). And also, it can be done later, plinking away with 1-picks. So despite my first impression, I'll not go with Blessing.

The other eyecatcher is Solitude, which incentivizes foreveralone, it's too sad.

So Experience and Mentor. But do I want +++Might, or +-+++Control and Shockwaves? Oh, neither: I see other people are voting for Fanged Ferocity despite the expense, so I might as well, since it gets Might as well.

WWVD? I'm not actually sure, but it'd probably be awesome so I'll just do what I want.

In conclusion, I'm shouldn't have used my brainmeats, and should have simply copied @Unelemental.

, plinking away with 1-picks.

Here's the thing though, not only will further Blessing Advancements likely be even better, this is likely our only shot at getting to them in anything resembling a reasonable time frame. A +Might just isn't competitive compared to more immediate power type advancements, much in the same way that Hunger has still failed to pick up Opalescence. Now is the time to do it, when we'be just ended an arc and are about to move into our next.

What's more is that this would lead into a much smoother growth curse than picking up shiny advancements now, since each Blessing upgrade is likely to be quite a significant boost in power and we'll still have all of our Credits to spend. Considering how the missions generally operate relative to our strength, that's a lot safer than front loading our gainz.

Despite writing thousands of words for Fish tactics, I'm coming around to the basic bitch Cut Through plan. With ADS, it's not a huuuge risk (oneshot or not, it has to actually land 3 hits to kill us, and a 3-pick is a 3-pick no matter how big), so if Apocryphal is significantly more likely to proc during our search for allies, it shouldn't be that much worse. But in saying that, I'm mostly trying to justify my real motivation of "don't wanna." Let's see some blood already!

I'm not switching yet because my reasons are unconvincing to myself, but if Cast Line wins without me voting for it, so much the better! :s

I feel the same way, I would love to just get in there and fight, but it feels too irresponsible today for some reason. So a vote for bait it is... and I quietly tip my hat to everyone slipping a vote in the other box.

The lone wolf route of Solitude + Scattered is appealing, but the maluses are too large, warping the incentives not just for this decision point but all subsequent ones. Also, abandoning the company now would make Nine something of a summer soldier. Since this is my first time voting I've got no business choosing to abandon established characters, so it's time to board the bandwagon.

We can currently have four stances up at the same time, due to our Rank at the moment (unless the Rank granted by OaF doesn't count for the purposes of Martial Stances).

Currently, we have: Guile-Defeating, Weapon-Defeating, Hero-Defeating on right now, and taking ADS will consume GDS and WoDS. We will also be buying World-Defeating Stance and Magic-Defeating Stance. At this point, we only know about Monster-Defeating Stance as the other stance that builds into FDS. Perhaps we'll get something like Horde-Defeating Stance, or something to that effect. Maybe a Tyrant-Defeating Stance..!

Huh... Diplomancy isn't getting any traction. Are we actually going to have a reasonable discussion for once? ...This is weird. Well I suppose there's no reason to hedge my bets anymore.

I really want to see an epic all or nothing fight, I really do. But I also don't want to die. Besides we have so many abilities that would benefit from bait and tackle. Not making use of them seems wasteful to me.

Bait and Tackle already minimises death chance so taking ADS with it is redundant, we'd get more value for our arete if we save for OaF 2 or Pillars. Remember we have to still have to protect Aoboru from the enemy sent by Chains of Fate so we need advancements that let us stay ahead of them easily.
