[X] The Forebear's Blade

I have a plan. Thousand Cuts, Fall of Night, and Echos. 9 Arete, significant offensive power and a bunch of physical stats. Being able to use blade wind more easily is really good for combat tactics since it lets us play at range. The sheer multiplicative offense of these choices is downright crazy.

Like, even that Progression+ translates to ten times as much xp for purpose of Blood domain. That's pretty nuts.

That would be ++Progresion!

So how good is this blood manipulation? Like, in terms of healing, draining, combat, using our blood in innovative ways etc.

Hm, it's not hemokinesis really. Think of it like Vilya, if Vilya's domain was blood, and its power more focused. You don't bleed out. Your enemies bleed profusely. Your blood sings with vigor and strength; theirs quails before you, weakening their resolve and possibly their vitality. Sufficiently vulnerable enemies might be struck dead with a gesture, their hearts giving out before your will. On larger timescales and greater scope is where it really shines. You could basically elevate a species of ordinary mortals into the Dunedain, or suppress and weaken the lands of your enemies, unleashing plagues of the blood against which they have little defense. With sufficient mastery you could boil the blood of their armies in their veins. Most importantly, all these effects have high conceptual weight, so they're harder to stop than more overt magics cast by someone of your Rank.

In terms of relevance to dungeoneering, it would give you a major edge against any living enemy with blood, and would improve your resilience and healing capabilities enormously, though combat-speed healing would only be moderate without a feat of exertion.

Elevating a bloodline to the Dunedain sounds neat, at least until such superhuman stats become completely outclassed by the steady march of progression. Now if we could create a vampire bloodline instead...

I was actually unsure if ++ was tenfold or hundredfold. In hindsight, I guess i confused it for Amplification.

Still, ~3 times progression remains being really powerful.

It's a Reality Effect Rank based power so it scales based on our Rank.

I doubt it. It won't have even been a week and he's an Isekai protagonist. We've got at least a month before he's leveled up sufficiently.
He doesn't need to level up sufficiently, he just needs to strike at the right time. His original target was Versch, so aiming at the robot while we're busy in the Temple makes sense. Then he can indulge his revenge boner by capturing the ladies and forcing us into an impossible moral dilemma or even trying to see whether we're willing to sacrifice ourselves. He can always escape if things don't go according to plan after all, or so he thinks.

[X] The Ring of Power

Iridescence seems like it would've been a solid pick but it would mean our build is totally built on a guess about how the dungeon works. Going full Passion on a ring build should have it apply to most of the dungeon I think? If we maintain the frenetic energy of I am the Danger.

I've become more interested in Really Scenic again but still can't really say it makes sense from a risk/reward standpoint so I won't vote for it. Accretion as a system is really good at taking the natural tendency to want to take the dangerous path and amplifying that desire... We will still have to get some intrinsic +Rank eventually even if we skip it here.

Ber is totally going to take them hostage once we're finished with the Temple, isn't he?

Why would he do that? Walking XP bags exist to become XP reified!

The greatness of the Dunedain was not in strength of arms alone, but also the glory and cunning of their craft, their indomitable will (Aragorn stalemates Sauron in a palantir duel) and quickness of mind, and wisdom to navigate the travails of their world!

It's a Reality Effect Rank based power so it scales based on our Rank.

The effects are still fairly diffuse, however. It's not going to raise up a supercombatant (relative to your own strength) or allow you to directly overwhelm a superior foe. Still, the applications are countless and the powers do have a certain intangible quality to them...

Seize the rank up while you can! It's free rather than costing 2 picks, after all!

How would he know that? He didn't even know about us until after he arrived. Whatever warnings he gets cant account for us, so he has no way of knowing when we are or arent there.

Hmm, I might have overestimated how much he dislikes us after that last fight. Maybe just killing us is revenge enough.

He knew Versch's precise location and abilities. Might be scrying abilities, might be his Quest system, but he seems cocky enough to give it another go.

Exactly. He knew that but nothing about us. That says we are a blindspot to him and he isnt going to try challenging us till he's finished at least one training montage.

I don't think he actually dislikes us at all. He's just mad he lost to an "npc".

It's a similar argument to what we've had in last iteration of quest. A couple of stats(or about 1/3 of Might) is not much on our own level, but spread about hundreds of thousands of combatants it starts mattering. Besides, perhaps we could use this ability to target our Decimator? After all, it controls life forces itself, and Hunger is artifact focused on mitigating Decimator..

Ability to buy EFB piecemeal is really shiny, and 2/3 of purchase have great deal of value of their own.

Hm... but will Ring win this vote, I wonder? Its powers are not as specialized, not so adroitly suited to pure combat as the Forebear's Blade! Once this upcoming build vote and/or boss battle are done and the Arete's depleted, all EFB-equivalents will look equally far away...

Ring seems very good. Unlike the other voters I'm thinking we go Chief Domain, it seems to work with our build pretty well. We are tanky, so if we are continually strengthening ourselves and weakening them the longer we hold out the more the battle tilts in our favor.

Mhm, does it matter? It will win some vote. Scaling Rank is just way too good to pass up, and once you go Ring you can't go back. Will we really refuse to spend 2 Arete for 0.25 scaling combat boost? And then we get there bit by bit.

Reaction: "Synchronization Complete"

Synchronization Complete
I'd almost forgotten we still had to get in the robot with all the recent discussions. Our synchronization will certainly be over 9000 in time, the question is by how much!

At last the onslaught of interesting times seemed to have abated for a span. Hunger awoke the next day to a fresh dawn, birdsong against a pink-gold sky, the world open and effervescent before them. A wind blew past, carrying the scent of lilies and roses, dewdrop lightness like a feather's caress.
Even Apocrypha knows when to stop it seems. Or it is so amused by our decision to run headlong into danger that it decided to stand by and watch. What a wonderful means of Curse Mitigation! Just do stupid and suicidal things on your own instead of forcing the Curse to make things 'interesting'. The Curse can't really make things worse if we're our own worst enemy!

He looked down to see the promised bouquet laid out around him. It was impressively bountiful and immaculately arranged. A smirk tugged at his lips. One ought expect nothing less from Lady Allria, though he wondered where she had gotten the flowers from. There was a card as well, made from creamy paper-stock which she must have scavenged from Letrizia's supplies.
Too bad we don't know anything about flower arrangement, or we would have learned some of the other levels of teasing Gisena prepared for us. Surely a noble Lady such as her wouldn't limit herself to mere words!

To our hero, said the card, written in perfect calligraphic hand with a spontaneity and flourish that captured well the tone of its writer. He paused in his reading to look into the distance. The Sorceress really was frighteningly talented at nearly everything she turned her mind to. Did her powers of nullification somehow arise from that? As if to say, 'should this world be reduced to the human level, I would be Empress and none could stand against me?'
Well, her Sorcerous enhancements probably contribute quite a bit to that all-encompassing competence. Much easier to be a genius when you've got findross buttressing your Wits. Not the whole of it, of course, speed of thought does not produce brilliance on its own, at most its semblance. And Gisena is quite brilliant.

Idle speculation. Gisena was too irresponsible for that. He returned to his reading.
I don't know, she was quite willing to do everything in her power to help humanity in AST 1.0 despite being nigh-certain that the fight was hopeless. Much as we hated her for depriving us of our Accursed-gifted Remittance, from her point of view she had done her best in the circumstances allotted to her, spying on the orcs and looking for ways to help humanity despite how tightly Jotarun had her nailed down. Even her final sacrifice killed a great number of orcs, though I can't quite find it in myself to feel grateful.

I hope you enjoy this lovely bouquet. I spent nearly half an hour on it! Also, I've worked on your Curses, about as well as could be managed. You should find that the times are slightly less interesting, and your Decimator's hunger more easily assuaged.

Love,
Lady Gisena Allria
Your Favorite Sorceress~
That's only until we create other Sorceresses! H-hmph, it's not like we like her or anything. She can't bribe her way into our graces that easily.

Truly a terrifying woman. He set the card aside and examined his arm, which one evening ago had been little more than ash and bone. Healed now, sealed perfectly and without scar, though the long-ago amputations of his other arm and eye persisted.
What a nice feeling it must be, to have some of his health restored once again. Hopefully we'll get the magics necessary to restore the Hero to full health at some point, or we'll keep getting options to permanently sacrifice our limbs for power.

He was human again, the spirit entwined inextricably with the flesh, though the potential of his wraith-form slumbered beneath, ready to awaken when his mortal coil failed. With an effort of will he brought that ghostflame to the surface, channeling it through his cloak of stars so that their ambient glow might continue to heal Letrizia.
Second Stage is quite the neat power, staying relevant even as we grow in Rank and power. After all, even the gods can die, and having the ability to continue the good fight after shedding off the mortal coil for a while is fairly useful. Also, it's not wraith, it's Heroic Spirit! Get your terminology straight if you want to maintain your image, Hero!

The girl was laid in a makeshift cot beside his own, and the passing night had done well for her condition. The ghostfire's curative light worked slowly, but its healing was profound, and the grisly mass of burns that covered her left side had improved considerably in complexion and texture.
Hmm, the power is much more effective than I'd thought. We'd been told it would be several weeks or something? Not that I'm complaining, I'm just pleasantly surprised.

Another passing breeze blew a flower into Letrizia's face, and she grumbled, blinking into wakefulness, pushing herself upright with an elbow. Her eyes were still bleary as she touched her face with only a minute wince of pain.

"Am I...?"

He raised an eyebrow. "Are you?"
'Where am I? Who am I? What am I doing here?'
No, Letrizia, you haven't been isekai'd yet despite this Realm being conductive to such things.

"Ah!" she startled. "Um, hey! Don't tease me right now! Can't you see I'm injured!?"

He turned away. "Such a stoic pilot. A shining example for all who wish to join the Armament Corps."
That's all the more reason to keep teasing her! She just keeps walking into it, how is our Hero supposed to resist?

She pouted. "As if there's such a thing! Anyway, I do feel a lot better. Guess I've got you to thank for that?"

"Maybe it was Gisena." He buffed his fingers against his chest.
Oho! I didn't think about it, but is teasing Gisena with our ability to heal perhaps our final chance to strike back against Gisena's Tyranny? After all, there can only be one Tyrant in this party, and it certainly won't be someone that doesn't even have the associated Doom!

"Hm!" She raised her palms to his cloak, as if basking in heat from a fire. "Feels nice, whatever this is. The light is so soothing, too... can I borrow this?"

"It won't work if I'm not wearing it," he said amusedly.
Is this foreshadowing? Letting others borrow our Artifacts especially such 'nice' ones (in comparison to the others) sounds like a sensible path of development.

"No fair!" She snuggled against the soft drape, brushing her uninjured cheek against its cloudlike surface. "How come you get all the cool stuff?"
Well, it all started with getting isekai'd and ended with us missing half our body parts, on the verge of death. But we got better, with a little help from the Accursed! She could try praying to him, she's as pure as cinnamon rolls get.

"...You saying Verschlengorge isn't cool?"

"You tell me, Praehihr." She stuck her tongue out.
What's that, is our apprentice in the arts of teasing baring her teeth at us? How daring! This is surely Gisena's fault, we shouldn't have let them spend so much time together. Now she's irrevocably corrupted and might be beyond salvation! It's a different sort of cuteness though, how vexing...

"Rest." He patted her sternly on the head. "We've still got that blue swordsman to worry about. We'll stay at the lakeside for one day more to recuperate, then we need to decide on our next destination."

"Hm," Gisena came up from behind them, plopping herself down on his opposite side. "I've got a few ideas in mind!"
Ah yes, our Bad Ideas Generator is with us once again. I can guess who suggested going to the Temple now. It almost certainly wasn't our fault!

"Eavesdropping again?" He flicked a rose at her, which she dodged artfully.

"When am I not?" She asked, stretching languidly. "You, who are within Nullity's regard, should not expect to escape it so easily!"
Stalking is not an attractive trait, no matter what yandere fetishists would tell you, Gisena. Unless there's something we don't know about the Hero's former relationship with his wife?

"A shame," he replied. "And here I hoped we could steal away with the Armament before you noticed."

"And deprive yourself of mine august company?" She batted her eyelashes. "You can't fool me! You simply love my noble presence too much to go even a day without."
Quite ironic given we're about to leave her behind to enter the Temple.

"And I thought Seralize was entitled," he observed. "I guess she can't compete with a Sorceress, and a noble lady at that."
Be it in appearance, powers or narcissism, that fake could never stand up to the real deal!

"Naturally," Gisena preened, flicking her hair. She turned up her nose to expose her elegant neck, a haughty expression that was distractingly convincing. "Though, I imagine she was simply a solipsist. Entitlement only takes you so far, after all. To believe your enemy had given up and would simply let you kill him..."
One wonders what sort of life she'd lived to end up like that. We'd been told she was grown from birth for this purpose, but it is hard to imagine something like that. Maybe she's an artificial human, grown in a tube and infused with the knowledge necessary to accomplish her task? Age and Treachery would become even more telling if she's just a few months old.

"A testament to my acting skills, nothing more." He replied. "I did sympathize with her, to a degree. Many times we attacked the Tyrant only to be repelled with severe losses. I too would swear vengeance with blind sincerity..."
Hopefully Hunger learned better lines after a while. Reading that had been painful.

"Nonesense," Gisena shook her head. "Your Tyrant presumably lived up to his title. Whereas we haven't been bothering anyone!"

"There is Verschlengorge's Decimation," Letrizia said uncomfortably. "And his very existence is like a beacon in the Astral realm."
These adventurers were quite explicit about being in it for money and glory. Given how entitled they were, they would have harped on about their moral superiority during the entire fight if they knew about Decimation.

"That reminds me," he rose to his feet. It felt good, to be reasonably whole and free of wounds. Time to do that which he'd put off long enough. "Letrizia, if you're feeling able, I'd like to examine Verschlengorge today. We should investigate whether my Curse is in any way linked to his."
We could put it off for a few more chapters. There isn't even a single Angel attack in sight, how could we possibly get in the robot when there is no dramatic tension?!

"Mhm!" She chirped, slowly rising to her feet as well. "Of course I can do this much. Just who do you think I am?"

"Don't know. But you do resemble... A certain redheaded pilot from a famous animated-"

"You!" She slapped his arm angrily. "H-hmph! Just get in the robot, Hunger!"

"Not helping your case," he smugly said.
The retribution is swift and unexpected - one could say we specialize in Vengeance. You have much to learn before you can challenge the master, Letty.

Wounded as Verschlengorge was, its internals were mostly intact, and Letrizia, sporting fresh bandages, pointed out various systems of interest as they walked. The cockpit was reasonably spacious, a comfortably reinforced pilot's chair in front of an array of futuristic panels. A good portion of the array was cracked and badly seared, though no longer smoldering, the flames having desisted overnight.
With every fight fixing Versch becomes ever more troublesome. I'm still impressed by the Foremost's craftsmanship, for their Armament to survive the rigors of time and combat despite everything it had been put through. Or was it the Foremost? Hard to believe that given the Armaments' connection to the Cursebearers...

Behind was storage space for the pilot's personal effects: pictures of Letrizia's family, various books and instruction manuals, an ornate military saber and a small fold-out cot.
So she doesn't have a kitchen sink stashed away in this mysterious space. How disappointing. Apropos family pictures, is she by chance not an orphan?! What a ridiculous lack of a tragic backstory for a mech pilot and heroine aspirant that would be.

"You've both ridden with me in the cockpit, so I don't need to explain the basics. You've mostly seen me use the manual controls, but there's another control scheme that can be employed when the Armament's Rank is sufficiently restored."

She pointed at the constellation of runes that covered the ceiling of the cockpit. "Totality. Merger of self and consciousness with the Armament. A much smoother means of control, as Verschlengorge has tactical reflexes many times faster than those of humans. It also prevents injury to the pilot, as our bodies are transposed within the Armament's Astral shadow."
Yet we haven't seen her do it previously. Is it because Verschlengorge is too broken or because she doesn't have the required skills?

As for getting transposed into its Astral shadow, does this mean at some point we'll get to see a fight on both levels simultaneously? After all, it's not like the Astral Realm lacks for aggressive denizens.

"Hm. So the best way to learn any secrets, or unusual connections with the Armament-"

"Would be that, yes." Letrizia nodded. "I'm not sure how we'll actually pull it off, though. We need some way to heal Verschlengorge, and I don't think your ghost-light is up to the task."
Maybe Shine Bright would have been better suited to the task and we could have healed up Verschlengorge some. Might have been too difficult and costly to bother though.

"And in the meantime, his Curse of Decimation..."

"Well," Letrizia temporized. "It's really not so bad for short durations, and the range should be low since he's so badly weakened... but, yes. It's active, unless there's an interaction with your Curse that I don't know about. Verschlengorge can sate its hunger by hunting powerful opponents, though it weakens him somewhat. It's in no state to do that right now."
How interesting, its creators have chosen some version of Huntress' Moon as Mitigation too, one with even more broadly defined targets than our version by the sound of things. Maybe that's why she was so unconcerned about the Curse before - with the support of their entire civilization, hunting powerful opponents regularly would have been within the realm of possibility.

We're more alike than you think, he mused, placing his hand on the Armament's control array. "So this cockpit is mostly human technology, but the ceiling is directly connected to the creature's flesh."

"That's right," Letrizia nodded. "The flesh and its runes are Foremost work. We don't understand it that well, to be honest."
It would surprise me quite a bit if they could understand something that has to do with Curses and Cursebearers. They barely understand Rank, never mind higher spheres.

He raised his hand, tracing his fingers across the runes, watching as they flashed blue at his touch. Something compelled him to place his palm against the center, the sense of affinity intensifying rapidly...

He did so, and a rumble of movement rippled through Verschlengorge, every rune suddenly alive and flaring, again the icy blue that cut across sight like a knife-wound in the real, the stencil-pattern of their arrangement carved into his mind, into his soul -
I don't like other things mucking around in the Hero's soul, but I suppose Versch gets a free pass this once for being such an awesome mech. He better not make it a habit though!

"Curse synchronization complete. Onwards, to the shining tomorrow. Welcome, Cursebearer."
The shining tomorrow evokes images of Odyssial's projects. Was the Accursed perhaps more involved in this project than we'd thought?

The sense of affinity had solidified, become almost like a tangible thread between them, an umbilical cord of the spirit that apprised him of their relative locations. He understood instinctively that the Armament's ownership had been transferred to him, that it would obey his commands without question, and that the Curse that afflicted it was no more, merged seamlessly into his own without any increase in effect, so long as the leash between them was unbroken. There was a limited range, but it was vast, more than a planet's worth.
This is really strange. Not that I expect silly notions of energy conservation to apply to Curses, but given how disgustingly clingy and unequivocally vicious they are, I didn't expect one of the Curses simply to disappear after a merger. Is it a case of 'there can only be one'? Well, I doubt it's as easy as that, so likely some kind of super-mitigation option built into them instead.

Would be interesting to see if we can remote-pilot Versch after we fix him up. That's like having our cake and eating it too!

He narrowed his eyes. "The shining tomorrow...?"

Letrizia fidgeted. "You can understand it? A translation function built into your connection?"

"It's speaking in Foremost still?"

She nodded, eyes wide. "This is the most I've ever heard it say."
If this conquering business doesn't pan out, we can get a lucrative job as a Foremost translator! Would be quite an advantage in Foremost ruins too.

"Letrizia is still your pilot," he said to the machine.

The creature responded, its booming voice rattling the cockpit in which they stood. "Of course. She is more skilled than you, and We like her."
...what a painfully honest guy. He has much more personality than I believed when we first saw Versch.

"Tell me what you know," he addressed the giant. "About Cursebearers, about the Foremost, the shining tomorrow. Tell me everything."

"Disclosure is restricted. We tire."
Of course it couldn't be that easy. Maybe even fixing Verschlengorge won't be enough. Will we have to go spelunking in Foremost dungeons to get those permissions?

"Restricted to what? How do I qualify? Am I not a Cursebearer? What further is required?"

"Means of disclosure are restricted."
He's getting more annoying by the minute. So he can't even tell us what the key to unlocking all that critical information is? Though maybe we're simply too weak to know anything about that, it's not like learning the answers would help us right now.

And with that, the runes lost their glow once more, and Verschlengorge went inert, speaking no more, no matter what was asked or how. The machine would still respond to manual commands, fighting as ably as ever, but the beast within was silent.

Well. At least they weren't being doubly decimated any more.
Always looking for silver linings. Thankfully our party members didn't get subjected to double Decimation for too long.

Navigating to the [X] Temple of the False Moon is no trivial task! According to the map, there are a number of routes one could take:

[ ] The Scenic Route - This route seems very safe and quite beautiful, but its cumbersome circumlocutions will take several days to navigate. Plenty of time to get to know your companions better.

*Travel time: 7-9 days
*Danger level: Low
*Bonus: +Letrizia +Gisena
*Gain Experience enough for 1 (+1) generic selection from Astral monsters defeated while guarding Verschlengorge.

70% chance of relatively uneventful journey
20% chance of minor additional bonus
10% chance of major additional bonus
A bit bland after taking the Temple option, but there is something to be said for not rushing into danger every single time we have to choose. Maybe we'll even pass Gisena's relationship milestone with this!

[ ] The Quickest Route - This route promises passage in less than a day, though it's fraught with danger, passing through several agglomerations of monster lairs.

*Travel time: 1-2 days considering sleep, meals
*Danger level: High
*Bonus: I Am The Danger - 10% effectiveness bonus for the duration of this journey and until the Temple is completed or forces you to retreat
*Penalty: Letrizia will not be fully healed by the time you arrive at the Temple, if you arrive.

50% chance of moderately eventful journey (fighting monsters grants Experience worth 2 + 1 selections)
20% chance of highly eventful journey (As above, but suffer a moderate complication)
20% chance to be interrupted by a highly dangerous monster
10% chance to be interrupted by an exceptionally dangerous monster
Quick and furious, steamrolling over everything in our path on the way to our destination. Sadly we're not the baddest boy in the neighborhood, but we're getting there!

[ ] The Really Scenic Route - This route of medium length passes through a horrifying expanse of murderous beasts and perilous traversals. It is the suggested route on the map. The scenery does look rather beautiful.

*Travel time: 5-7 days
*Danger level: Extreme
*Bonus: Death or Glory. +Gisena, +.25 Rank if you survive.
*Bonus: Halcyon Expanse - +1 Arete from inspirational landscapes

50% chance to be interrupted by an exceptionally dangerous monster
25% chance to be interrupted by an epically dangerous monster
20% chance to be interrupted by multiple dangerous monsters and other hazards
5% chance of death

A highly dangerous monster is worth 3 (+ 1) picks and usually offers at least one 3-pick option. An exceptionally dangerous monster may offer a 4-pick option. An epically dangerous monster will unlock multiple 3- or 4-pick options.

We will not be using the forum roller for this.
Please stop encouraging our bad habits, Gisena. Choosing a path that is even more dangerous than the destination doesn't seem like sound reasoning. Those tasty rewards though...

What will be your strategy upon reaching the Temple?

[ ] Conservative - Letrizia in Verschlengorge, Gisena to Protect Them, Explore Temple Yourself
[ ] Risky - You + Gisena in the Temple, Letrizia in Verschlengorge by Herself
[ ] Abandon Verschlengorge - All humans in the Temple, Verschlengorge by Himself

The latter options are quite dangerous to Verschlengorge. The former is quite dangerous to you.
Thinking about it, can't we like, swear to revive Letrizia after we get more powerful should she die? That's what we did for our wife! The Forebear might despise us for such wishy-washy resolve though.

Or maybe Versch can simply enter his Final Form and show them all.

[X] The Quickest Route

The seven-cost for Evening Sky scales with experience and overall makes us more capable of taking risks. I find that not having to worry about scaling up protection for a good bit of the quest to be greatly beneficial-- in addition, the two-cost is useful in being able to weaken novel magic systems that we have no other counter for.

Is Opalescence - Iridescence - Pearlscence line similar to Vanguard in that they cost a single pick/7 Arete for all of them? Because boy, that would be some real fucking value right there.
