In straightfoward challenges. I didn't even say the option isn't strong. I said we might have trouble figuring out how to make findross. It might take a significant detour in which we might want to do other things. But the Hero will still be strong with all those mitigated Curses.

The "downplaying the Curses" bit is driving me mental. When Rihaku talks about the risks we might face as a Progression type, he must take into account the Apocryphal Curse. Thus, when he said the Scepter gave us good odds of surviving the immediate term, he must also be considering the Apocryphal Curse. What the hell is there to misinterpret? Did he lie and the Scepter doesn't give us very good odds of safety in the immediate term?

Catherine also offers a ton of value, just not as much value as Gisena immediately, she's explicitly the late game option. Again, none of those technically offer anything "unique", the Scepter is supposed to protect us in the early game, we don't even know if we will have Gisena for the results of the next vote. Why the hell triple down on safety like this when we can invest for a better late-game?
'Immediate term' is, like, right now (before Apocryphal can even proc against us). Without King's Scepter Protag might have already died. We still have to survive in the short, medium and long term, y'know?

Accretion can provide findross, it's an explicit upside of Luna combination.

It likely assumed gameplay where players put in enough effort to deal with it. Odds are not certainty, after all - If you deal badly with them it will fuck it up, if you deal well with it it can gain you a lot.

I've never said that Cat has no value; you are the one focused on uniqueness as some sort of the most important attribute for value. My main argument is not that Gisena offers more value to us in terms of value, but in terms gameplay - with Gisena we get to do fun stuff while she does boring stuff, while with Cat she gets to murder Kaiju's while we deal with social and Curses.

[X] Twice-Great

I feel like this is one of those votes where all options are good and you just choose your personal preference. So, mech-pilot it is!

Now that we're closing in on the last part of character creation, I'm curious - what would you choose if the Accursed had given this opportunity to you? Would you go for the path of Progression and take on the Apocryphal Curse, or the safer and easier route of the Combat-type? Which Remittances, Primary and Lesser, would you pick? Would anyone refuse the offer completely?

Honestly, probably just grab combat-type, lunacy, slumber and praxis. Considering a mundane world, it would mean a very cozy life. Probably Gisena, since she might be capable of advancing science in the world. Orthewise, just grab itensify.

Then again, I somewhat doubt that an cursebearer can have an entirely peaceful life...

If, for some reason, I had to choose progression...planar brand and tyrant's, with Scepter and Gisana to help mitigate curses. Life brightly and probably die horribly.

Just starting to catch up, apparently the thread went live while I was sleeping, oh well.
First up, Votes!

[X] King of Sorcerers - Expansive versatility at the cost of some direct power.

[X] Humanitarian Efforts - The city is being pillaged or simply butchered by that creature's spawn. It appears to be struggling against its opponent, so there should be no need for you to intervene. Save as many lives as possible, rescue and evacuate civilians from the city and cull the ranks of the creature's horde. Best keep your distance from both abominations until you learn more. You don't quite trust this unnatural affinity. [+Charisma]

We already have power, so what I want now is secondarily versatility, but primarily the mitigation prowess that King of Sorcerers has in spades. Humanitarian Efforts because that's a cha boost and the other boosts nothing except maybe the cities odds of survival.

Ohh, now that's a fun one. Definitely choosing to be a Combat-type, I've no desire to risk everything upon progression when I have no great overlying goal. I just want to live and enjoy life, that's easier for the Combat-type.

Primary Remittance is more fun, already a combat type so I don't need the scepter. Three Wishes is most valuable with a certain lifestyle that I wouldn't be going for so its out. The Praxis depends upon effort, and as I have arbitrary time I can put in arbitrary amounts of effort, so it vastly surpasses the Regalia. That said, if I was going to be a progression type, I'd grab the Regalia and have Wild double Force.

Lesser Remittance is a bit more tricky, and especially so since we apparently don't get the innate magics. Retinue would be weird without being a progression type, forebearer's sword is lesser without magics, my build rather obviously contradicts with Hunger. Reliquishment is just too small for me, especially as I have minimal mitigation options. I could go with Talon and delete my resource needs, but theft and being a combat type make that easy enough already. As such, and since earth has no magics for me to lose, I'd go with Intensify to boost growth. I could have gone with a companion, probable Gisena, but I'm not entirely comfortable yanking a person, and I have pretty much nothing to offer her, so best to just boost growth and help counter Slumber.

Then come the curses, and that's the fun part. Personally I'm assuming that I'd have to run two since we're in this thread and its simpler, I think I'd go with Doom of Lunacy and Slumber. One weakens me but I don't need to leave earth till I'm already powerful enough to do it on my own, and the other just slows me down a bit, not like I mind sleeping a lot either. Additionally, I don't mind the effects of it, so sooner or later Doom of Lunacy would shift into its Geas form and thus that power loss goes bye bye.

I wonder if the Accursed getting Cursebearers is somewhat mediated by the Doom of the Martyr. After all, he has a Perception score of 'yes'. Detecting people who have a pure heart might too easy, and then there might be mind reading involved.

What would you choose if the Accursed had given this opportunity to you?
Freedom>Slumber+Champion>Three Wishes>Prolessarch+Relinquishment
Get wish advice from lich bro since I'm not a clever man, take curses I can bear myself without screwing the world, take vacations to come home and do useful stuff for the world with whatever power I've got left over from wishes until desire for goodwill and responsibility is satisfied, then use remaining power to Do cool stuff, like encourage the arts I like. Probably also stupid stuff, like carve dirty limericks into the face of the moon, and leave powerful possibly magical artifacts lying around everywhere.

Also I'd destroy Royal Road, put quests back on /tg/, and go tell Rihaku the wish I picked so I could see him bemoan my awful efficiency.

Tbh it's funny how Slumber is something we'd never take in quest and yet we'd always take it in RL. Half of my waking life for awesome cosmic power? Hell yeah motherfucker.

Well slumber is a lot less bad if you're looking forward to living for quintillions of years or whatever. Especially if you don't have a pressing need to ramp up to max power.

sword salt

[X] King of Sorcerers

Sad to see there isn't an option that combines Intensify, Hunger, and Forbear's Blade for maximum staring power/gains, that would have been the plan I wanted to see if I weren't pushing for Sword.

@Rihaku, do we have an intrinsic understanding of whether a territory is conquered or not? For example whether or not swearing someone to a certain standard of vassalage would be enough to count their territory?

Does anyone have any idea how Accretion can help Gisena get access to Findross?

Seeing as Accretion works beyond physical and common sense it may work like this.
Gisena is a powerful Sorcerer => She needs Findross to become a Sorcerer => There must be Findross for her to use so logically Findross exists for her to use.
or
Gisena is a powerful Sorcerer => Archmage Legend/Archetype so Accretions boost her powers and because an Archmage have to be able to cast spells, provides Findross.
Accretion is like a self reinforcing cycle. You imitate the archetype you want, you get the Accretion power so you are closer to that archetype, now you can imitate harder and better then before, Accretion gets stronger and reinforces your abilities. Rinse and repeat.

It's more than Findross makes things more like they should be, and Accretion seems to be about aping Noble Phantasms superimposing legend of an item over the actual thing and slowly transforming real to ideal.

Looks like Humanitarianism is comfortably ahead, I'm less and less convinced on it the more I think about it though. Seems like a route to getting bogged down in our worst area while we're still weak.

Current vote count?

Depends if the death of a Cursebearer wastes a Cursebearer slot for him. If it doesn't, even a 99% chance of death would be a low price to be a Cursebearer. I'd do the same as the above but Lesser Wish for a power optimised against the Apocryphal, trading immediate ability and ease of learning for growth potential if possible. Then Least Wish for a year's worth of training in said power. With the short term sorted, turn into a murderhobo hermit and work towards earning a Least Wish by defeating Apocryphal enemies.

Taking Three Wishes in conjunction with the Champion's Brand? Bold!

Woof. They're totally fucked, their only hope is being absolutely beneath notice. Also, holy shit do we have to be at a high level to get revenge. I knew that would be the case but "transcending linear time" is further than I expected.

He would not propose Progression-type as the only practical choice for Vengeance if it were not the only practical choice! I suppose a Combat-type with Sword or Three Wishes might theoretically be able to get there eventually, but likely not. And almost certainly not within finite time.

My suspicion is that the + charisma of Humanitarian efforts means that the bro-giant will actually be way more beneficial and profitable to our geas.

Would not the option that involves assisting the humanoid abomination be more likely to entangle it in your schemes?

Furthermore, considering we've taken Vengeance, a MC who we can begin to steer towards forming mitigating relationships, to avoid basement behaviour would be good.

If you take Hunger, you won't be able to train as a hermit!

I want Gisena for her character, her magic nullifying, and her progression method and science skills. She's a good all-round package. Furthermore, without the Praxis, we know that we may not have omni-dimensional abilities. Considering this, and that we've gone progression over combat.

King's Scepter would have granted whichever system it buffed a large degree of reliability in other dimensions.

This seems quite solid, just need to raise our profile as a strange vigilante hero that comes and goes like the wind capturing the imagination of the populace (I.E. fight monsters and look good, but never talk to anyone so they never realize what an asshole you are) until we've grown enough we can start taking over.

Actions that care nothing for law or custom are often provocative as well! To the authorities if not the populace.

But I think she is able to get there with our Support. She's basically the the perfect target for buffing so as our abilities grow 500% it multiplies her own abilities.

Yup, she's basically the ultimate buff platform and mecha pilot! A potent combination indeed!

It's safe to assume that Cut Off has some sort of hidden reward similar to Charisma, possibly even greater given increased danger. This might not be the case, of course, but it likely is

Perhaps it depends on your level of execution... vote Muscle Wizard!

I wonder how the volunteer system for Relinquishment works, getting on the list eventually seems like it might be pretty valuable.

Certainly. One gets to experience novel Curses in a semi-controlled environment! It's like training weights for your badass level. And you get the gratitude of knowing "at least I don't have to deal with this Curse all the fucking time!"

Shouldn't most votes be that way!?

Freedom>Slumber+Champion>Three Wishes

Lots of people taking Champion + Wishes! The anti-synergy burns...

@Rihaku, do we have an intrinsic understanding of whether a territory is conquered or not? For example whether or not swearing someone to a certain standard of vassalage would be enough to count their territory?

You have an intuition for when things qualify as advancing your progress to completing your Geas, and a sense of when ruled territory is considered sufficient to start the countdown, yes.

Now I really want to try this. We get to help someone and have fun at their expense simultaneously. For a given definition of fun.

[X] King of Sorcerers
[X] Humanitarian Efforts

The mitigation focus appeals to me more than the other power choices' specialities do.

Maybe there is some sort of Cursebearer Association? Like, you need to get past level 1500 for membership, and they sit around complaining the whole day about new Cursebearers who can't take more than five Curses. In their day you took ten Curses just to become a Combat Cursebearer and you damn well liked it!

[X] Cut Off The Head
[X] Luna Conquerer

Swapping votes around. I actually quite like Gisena, and ultimately I do prefer Accretion to Seals. Close thing, though.

As for the update itself, my first thought of the disappearing-not-reappearing dog monsters was RWBY, but seeing that they're probably associated with the bigger wyrm-y-er dog monster, EVA seems more likely. Judging from the fact that they found us out in the countryside, they could be all over the area. If that's the case, then our efforts will be sorely needed to save civilians in the city. Hopefully it's a proper geofront mess of bunkers and safety drills.

If they are indeed some equivalent of angelspawn, then they might just keep on coming until big boy is down. That'd be my main argument for going off to help the giant, instead.

From a meta perspective, +cha is wonderful, and much more helpful to our stated goal than immediately going for the biggest trophy. It's also important to start being heroic right away, since our legend will shape our power via Accretion.

I'm tentatively inclined to say this is a world without industrialization, since city walls aren't really worthwhile in a post-high-explosives world.

Edit: See Wolfy's points below, gonna go ahead and fight big monster.

Consider that a) Other choice likely has reward of relevant value b) with Gisena around we don't need to care about cha as much and c) Accretion benefits from stunts such as publicly fighting Kaijus. Cut Off is a relevant choice too! Rihaku also implied that monster doggos will keep on spawning until we(or our EVA buddy) kill the wyrm.

Time for pure unadulterated speculation! This monster is just part of another bigger hive mind! The main body of the being is in another sphere in the same solar system and is using these ones as scouts to test this sphere!

Our Apocryphal Curse will be the main body finally consuming all the resources in the other sphere and descending on this world!
