Civil Discussion
You go to the music venue hoping to instill some culture in Ruby. She is a childish, rude dolt. Some nice, classical music will hopefully set her on the right path.

There is already a group performing, though.

It isn't classical.

It isn't opera either.

It isn't even jazz.

It is an unholy mixture of pop, rock, and – you can't help but shudder – metal.

And worse yet, you don't hate it. However, you don't buy a copy of the album.

You don't.

There is no proof that you did, shut up.

On the bright side, Ruby has fun, up until she decides to get into an argument with someone named Cardin Winchester.

Which would be fine, if you didn't recognize the name 'Winchester' as the last name of a very influential family in Vale, and more importantly, one of the Schnee Dust Company's big stockholders.

And… there's the fact that you two are what some might consider 'childhood friends.' The notion was ridiculous, of course, you were acquaintances at best. You remember him being a bit of a bully, from the few times you did interact, but you also remember his elder brother, Jay, reigning him in. You two would frequently fight over who had the better elder sibling.

Hopefully he had forgotten you. If he did remember you, it would be awkward.

You intervened before Ruby could do anything stupid. "What's the problem here?"

"He's saying that you don't need morphing weapons, and that it's 'pointless fluff'!" Ruby cries.

Cardin huffs. "That's because it is pointless fluff! Look at what happened to that girl from team LEMN, she got knocked out because her weapon didn't morph properly! Morphing weapons are unreliable hunks of junk that can fail on you at the worst time!"

"Why you…!" Ruby fumed, and turned to you. "Weiss, help me explain to this idiot why he's wrong!"

Cardin looks at you and smiles. "Weiss?" Oh crap, he remembers you. This could be awkward. "If I remember correctly, Winter Schnee's weapons didn't morph. More points to my argument." Oh thank Dust, he didn't make things awkward.

You can practically see steam coming off of Ruby as she looks at you with pleading eyes, though. "With morphing weapons, you've got two forms that both excel in their own role! With combo weapons, unless they're really well designed, they either excel in one field and fall short in the other, or they're just mediocre in both fields!"

"Yeah, but with a combo, you can use the elements of one kind of field to boost the effectiveness of the other, like using ranged shots to increase momentum or impact!"

"Morphing weapons can do the same things!" You see Ruby reaching towards what you can only guess is her own weapon.

This is bad… If you can't pacify Ruby, then she might do something very rash, and Qrow will be upset. On the other hand, if you deny Cardin's points outright, there's a chance that he might use his influence to ruin your families' ties. It would be best to hit a happy medium, but… would you be able to?

They're both looking at you expectantly. What do you say…?

Cardin is still a bully. He just sees Ruby as an intellectual equal, and nobody brought up the topic of Faunus.

Also, if you want to read the battles that happened on this day, check the sidestory! Plausitivity is helping me write them so I can get the chapters out without worrying as much about the battles.

Weiss might want to consider adding some Techno and Electro to her collection for lampshading purposes.

If there aren't any actual votes, I'm going with this.

It will certainly get a... reaction, I can promise you that.
I mean my alternative was a rap battle between the two to espouse the greatness of their chosen weapon.
But, since you don't really write rap, I guess we could go with the "convince them that they're both equally valid, though Ruby could tone down the crazy mods, as we saw a rifle can and will malfunction if there's even a single delay in maintenance (she's a dolt) and Cardin could use a ranged option, if he ever finds himself against a bigger opponent (Ursa)" way.

If you put that in as a vote, I'll change it so that it sounds like Weiss.

Canon Omake: LHYM Vs. KAAS (Plausitivity)
LHYM vs KAAS
"Gooood afternoon! The event begins in 10 minutes! Will Team Lime and Team Case come to the arena!"

"Alright team, let's get going!" Lana said, standing up from the sushi bar, picking up her rifled spear.

Morgan groaned. "Can we take just one more plate? Pleeeeeaaaase?" His eyes were real big.

"No, we don't wanna be late and get hit by penalties later." Lana said firmly.

"Fine, no buffing for you then." He got elbowed by Hazel. "Ow! Okay, okay, just joking."

Hazel put down her bowl, standing up to her full height, nearly hitting the ceiling of the store. "Alright, I'm ready."

Lana called out to Maria, "come on."

Maria jumps a bit, a bit of shrimp dangling out of her mouth before slurping it up. "Mhmm!"

She skips up, her shield in tow.

--------

"Welcome, teams! Get ready, Competitors!"

The sun shone brightly on the rocky terrain, which had few features apart from a few shrubs and a few clusters of rocks.

"Ugh... did these girls dress for school or battle?" Hazel listlessly said, hefting her hammer onto her broad shoulders. The opposing team all wore schoolgirl outfits, with thigh-high stockings. A staff, a glaive, a long bludgeon, and... claws? One had metal claws. The white haired one.

"On your marks!"

"I mean, I heard they stopped a violent serial killer?" Morgan offered from behind Hazel, shifting his daggers. "They're probably no slouch."

"Get set!"

"Regardless, no hesitation." Maria coldly says, her prior cheery demeanor turned off.

"Go!"

Both teams... stayed put.

Pacing around slowly, each eyed the other side like two prides of lions challenging the other to move first.

Morgan waved his hands around, purple aura swirling around with the fire dust in his daggers. The energy flowed forward, into Hazel's body. She swung her hammer down.

Hard.

The earth cracked with heat, creating an ever-expanding fissure, creeping towards the four schoolgirls. Then, when they thought that was all, the hammer exploded.

A rocket roared out of the hammer's top, barreling towards KAAS with a red glow.

"SCATTER!" Kuroko shouted, leaping out of the way.

The others also jumped... but Akane was caught out. Her eyes shut closed, her hair a mess. She dropped onto the ground. The flames... were embracing her.

In fact, they weren't even harming her.

Akane's eyes flared. She wobbled up, the flames wreathing around her in a shroud. "Oh, it's on."

She swung her glaive behind her, and took off straight towards Hazel.

"I got you!" Kuroko spun her staff around, seeming to show off... until water started appearing around her. She had the stream become like ribbons flowing around her.

"What the..." Morgan stopped, looking at the strange sight. He followed Hazel as she strode across towards the charging Akane.

Before the water-manipulating girl could do anything, Maria stepped in with her shield, blocking Morgan from direct line of sight.

"Don't try anything, Wet Wipes." Maria muttered as she slowly advanced on Kuroko, Lana following up beside her.

Swinging her hammer again, Hazel aimed right at Akane's face. The fire-covered girl was ready this time, however, and simply rolled forward, slicing through the air into Hazel's ribs. A protective shielding formed around the site of impact, shimmering above her aura! It seemed to deflect the cutting edge, making it glance off, even though the strike was spot on...

"Ugh." Hazel simply grunted, and faced Akane.

Spinning her glaive around herself, Akane became a ball of flame, and then... vanished. The fire spread around Hazel.

"Nice trick." Hazel immediately knew what this was, and lept up... then slammed her hammer down onto the ground, cratering it. The resulting shockwave threw dust, rocks, and Akane outwards.

"Akane Toriyasu is eliminated!"

"Guh... so close..." Akane closed her eye and laid there, stewing in anger.

Morgan just shook his head. "Oldest trick in the book."

Meanwhile, Lana and Maria were engaged with Kuroko, Aoi, and Shiromi. Despite the numbers imbalance, the fight was a stalemate.

Clashing with water spraying around, steel extending and retracting, and Aoi's bat growing rapidly to strike in unexpected angles. Lana dodged a swipe from Shiromi, the claw shooting out into the ground, stuck. Shiromi looked up at Lana smirking and driving down her spear, sliding on the blue-haired girl's side, her aura shimmering.

"Ahck! Get BACK!" Aoi's pointed her bat at Lana, and the spikes on the end struck out with the bat, exploding in a shower of nails and wood.

Maria was pushed back by the shockwave, having splinters and nails in her clothes sticking out. Shiromi had tougher skin, and the projectiles clattered off her outfit, indicating armor underneath.

Lana, hopping up above Aoi, had taken the half-blind girl's blind fury as an opportunity to flip on the rifle mechanic on her spear, firing a point-blank round with a crack!

Aoi flew back, a huge ripple in her aura as a wave of ice blew her backwards. The round managed to freeze her arm, and it wasn't long before... a really tall presence appeared behind her. "Hi."

Hammer met with Aoi's torso, and she was blown sideways to the edge of the arena.

"Aoi Ryugoku is eliminated!"

"aaAAAAAA" Shiromi moved in a blur, swiping at Lana's leg, then her chest in anger, the claws extending viciously each time. As she tried turning back, Lana was struck by Kuroko's measured stream of water, causing her to fall back. Shiromi saw the opening, and dug deep into Lana's side, causing her to cry out in pain.

"Lana Lake is eliminated!"

Shiromi had no time to celebrate, as she felt a rumble again. A hammer was the last thing she saw before joining Aoi on the edge.

"Shiromi Torayoshi is eliminated!"

With that, Kuroko faced down the remaining injured Maria and Hazel. They circled around Kuroko, like they were waiting for something. Maria held up her shield, her sword barely seen, while Hazel stood straight with her shielding surrounding her, shoulders rolled back, as if daring Kuroko to attack. With a wave, Kuroko summoned a wave of water to protect her.

Out from behind her, before she could throw up a barrier, a dagger hit her back, causing Kuroko to lose her grip on her staff, and become stunned. The water splashed around her in a harmless manner.

"Sorry, beautiful." Morgan said, readying to spin around. "School's out."

He spun, giving Kuroko two slashes to drop her right below the threshold.

"Kuroko Kamenaga is eliminated! Team LHYM wins!"

With that, it was over.

"Lana! Are you okay?" Hazel uncharacteristically had a worried and concerned inflection in her voice. She hurried over to where Lana sat, nursing her side.

She was greeted by a warm smile. "I'm fine, big gal! Now help me up, let's go congratulate the other team for the fight."

Hazel exhaled with relief, pulling her leader up. "Thanks, Lana. Was kinda... concerned." She wouldn't admit it, but her face grew warmer despite not showing it.

[X] Convince them both that their ways are both in need of improvement. Ruby needs to make her mechanisms less complicated, Cardin needs to consider various opponents of varying strengths.
-[X] Buuuut, if they're still petulant, refer them to a weapon exhibition contest of some sort. There should be one here to decide this once and for all.

I could probably try to come up with something or link to the RWBY wiki page on weapons, but instead I'll just vote for this:

Eeeeh, her weapon is basically not a mecha-shift/morphing one, since it doesn't change forms. It's a combo weapon, a saber+revolver, which is what they were arguing over.
Ruby has a shifting weapon since it folds and expands (she also has her war scythe mode which is more melee damage and longer range), while Cardin would likely have his mace with some kind of shooty mortar or something.
Sorta compact, but not as portable like Ruby's scythe, especially if Cardin wants to get a bigger gun or other attachment to his mace.
Weiss just has a saber with a revolving dust infuser, not a shifting weapon.

I might be wrong, but Weiss's weapon never actually changes shape. True, there are moving parts, but that's an inherent quality of the revolver, which is what said moving parts are based on. it's not a rapier that changes into a revolver - it's a rapier with revolver parts.
Edit: Blaked.

Eh, kinda ended up thinking a combo weapon was the middle point between the two.
Yeah, this was the argument:
"He's saying that you don't need morphing weapons, and that it's 'pointless fluff'!"
If I remember correctly, Winter Schnee's weapons didn't morph.
Cardin later said combo weapons (like Weiss's saber+revolver)

Ruby:
With morphing weapons, you've got two forms that both excel in their own role! With combo weapons, unless they're really well designed, they either excel in one field and fall short in the other, or they're just mediocre in both fields!
SO basically morphing (Ruby's scythe, Qrow's sword-shotgun) can do one or the other in each form, doing the job of either, but not always both.

Cardin:
Yeah, but with a combo, you can use the elements of one kind of field to boost the effectiveness of the other, like using ranged shots to increase momentum or impact!
Ironically, Ruby's extended scythe actually uses the last bit, since she loves zipping around thanks to the extra momentum from shooting while slashing.

Remember that voters can live in different time zones, and might be busy with work or sleeping at the time of posting an update, so it should take longer than a couple of hours before you need to start worrying about participation. While a swift voting period is fine for a Quest like this one with quick, brief updates, more complex quests like empire builders can have voting periods longer than 24 hours to make sure everyone has a chance to participate.

Myrtenaster is specifically a rapier, it's Winter's weapon that's a saber.

Cardin would likely have his mace with some kind of shooty mortar or something.
His mace doesn't seem to have any moving parts, it just has a Fire Dust crystal in the top that he can apparently use to generate directed explosive shockwaves when hitting the ground, which he tried to use against Pyrrha.
Of course this still means that he'd be sh*t out of luck against any kind of real ranged target, such as any kind of flying Grimm (this is exactly what happened to Dee on the Argus Limited; he had no way of fighting off the flying Manticores other than to charge in swinging, so he just got swooped off the train and died).

And to be fair to Ruby here, we've never actually seen a transforming weapon jam on screen in the show so far, likely for the same reason they're able to work in the first place. Either because they're just that well made and/or from Aura BS.

I'm mostly fine with this, but I fail to see how Ruby can make Crescent Rose less complicated without taking away any of its features that make it so effective.

Or Rule of Cool, like how Ren never runs out of ammo due to his guns being Grimm massagers.

I mean, the whole unfolding mechanic of Crescent Rose is kind of liable to jamming, though with how Ruby cares for it like a doting mother, she probably wouldn't have that problem. Best to let her see that possibility, though. If not to convince her to change, then to let her be more diligent.

Also, Cardin could upgrade his weapon, since smashing the ground to send a ranged attack is quite specific, and sucks against flying enemies, which we'll remind him of. Also bigger enemies like Ursa, which he can't overpower like other students or Beowolves.

Keep in mind that Weiss doesn't know anything about Cardin's weapon, and has only heard tuned-out blathering about Crescent Rose. She's going to translate your vote into something more generalized.

Right, thank you.

I guess they'd both show off their weapons if we were to explain, since we'd only have an idea of Ruby's weapon, and not Cardin's?
Weiss is always a sort of reasonable person, especially with how we chose to talk to the racist greenhead than fight him.

But what of the significance of our data? Are we only taking from this year's battles? What's the size of confidence intervals that we'll apply? How can we account for Type I and Type II errors?
