Quest to Become a Hero

No sense saving anything for later, I fully expect to have multiple times more Legacy Points than we currently have by the time we're allowed to spend them again.

[X] Rise Hero

[X] Plan More than EXP
-[X] Quick to Act [1] -
You are fast to respond in dangerous situations, where others are still confused about changing events you have already begun to move in response to them.
-[X] Iron Clad Mind [5] - Your will is strengthened considerably under the guidance of the Spirit as if your mind has created the foundations of a fortress around it. With it's backing you are capable of putting up greater resistance against mental influences.
all.

-[X] Scholarly Determination [3] - You have embraced the path of a scholar even as you walk that of an Adventurer. It is a hard path to walk, but you seek to follow both to the very end. You are bound more tightly by your Scholarly Code, but are also driven to greater heights by it.
-[X] Aspire to Sagehood [4] - You've come to find yourself a seeker of all forms of knowledge and find it easy to learn those skills a scholar finds most useful. Perhaps with enough work you may achieve acknowledgement as a Sage, a master of countless fields of knowledge. Increased skill gains for scholar related skills.
-[X] Wise Words [5] - When you speak on subjects you know and within your realm of knowledge on them you are incomparably convincing for your words carry a sense to them unlike any others. Wisdom is the tool of the long lived and successful after all.

Plan Hero Rise is solid, but there's far more to being a hero than just having a lot of exp. Considering where he is before the discussion, I'm considered there will be no time to gain exp to hit high levels.

I picked, quick to act, and , iron clad mind, as a direct consequence of being unconscious in a "danger zone". The two combined should help greatly as we escape with our rabbit. Aspire to Sagehood, should increase our skills which can be reapplied in our adventuring. It also means we get away with spending less time study as the bonus might make up the difference. Scholarly determination gives a goal, and Wise Words allows a sort of subtle, secondary power tied to our Scholarly Skills.

Avoiding the elf won't stop something like this from happening again because something similar happened when the MC went by a statue (God of War blessing), was reading a scroll (forbidden scroll), and to a lesser extent, went to train Evasion (the instructor tried to intimidate the MC). There's no guarantee that the MC won't encounter an elf outside of the Guild either. We definitely need to start looking into ways to build mental(?) resistance.
Oh, now I see what was being said about random bad things happening. I get where you're coming from, from a gaming perspective. At the same time though, long odds are appropriate to a hero narrative, and it's not exciting or believable if everything bad is predictable or avoidable.

The reason I didn't think anything of going to the doctor (aside from it being the default option for not immediately taking the Advancement Test) was because I was under the impression that we had an unspoken understanding that she wasn't going to try to charm us again, because last time she did she got some Soul damage (based on the nosebleed she got) from the Crown rebuking her for her trouble. This attack was a whole new thing where we somehow made contact with the Dawn Tree due to an unlikely roll while witnessing her healing spell, and found out it doesn't like the Heroic Spirit in the most abrupt way possible.

So from now on we'll need to stay away from any Dawn Elves unless we can make sure they won't call upon the Tree in our presence (without being able to say why), at least until we think that our HS is strong enough not to just get ripped out of us. I'd also like to research a list of what other Entities are hostile to the Heroic Spirit so we know to stay away from people, places, and things associated with them, but that's probably a futile hope that that kind of written information exists since one of the rules of Heroic Spirit is "You do not talk about Heroic Spirit."
Yeah, after re-reading I don't think anyone could have actually anticipated the whole tree thing, but there were hints at least and we know better now. I'm for doing some research, we did find that forbidden scroll that one time so it's not a stretch to think there's more info like that out there. Even if it isn't written down explicitly, we might get a lead on how to talk to people or spirits that do know.

[X] Rise Hero

More than EXP plan does bring up some good points but I maintain that Sturdy body is definitely going to be useful here.
Also, I feel kind of nervous about the Rabbit levelling up too much without us; it could potentially overcome the Dominate, though it would admittedly probably need at least 2 levels on us for that

My understanding is that Swift Growth helps with ALL XP gain, not just leveling XP. That would include XP towards gaining skills and increasing the ranks of applicable titles and abilities.

I'm not sure what you mean by there being no time to level up. Do you think the healing elf is going to attack him?

[X] Rise Hero
-[X] Sturdy Physique [2] -
You come to possess a body that is much more resilient than your original form allowing you to withstand roughly twice as much damage before your body gives out resulting in death.
-[X] Quick to Act [1] - You are fast to respond in dangerous situations, where others are still confused about changing events you have already begun to move in response to them.
-[X] Iron Clad Mind [5] - Your will is strengthened considerably under the guidance of the Spirit as if your mind has created the foundations of a fortress around it. With it's backing you are capable of putting up greater resistance against mental influences.
-[X] Swift Growth I [10] - With enough power the Heroic Spirit can even help you grow, increasing the rate at which you earn experience by twenty-five percent permanently.

It only takes a few moments for you to decide on which traits to purchase.

Sturdy Physique and Quick to Act would give you a definitive edge in battle, or at least the ability to get into one without coming out of it completely beat up.

Iron Clad Mind to safeguard against the myriad incidents that seem to float around everywhere in this town, not to mention maybe now you can get Guild medical attention without the Elf making you accidentally give away your money.

And finally, Swift Growth, the very trait you've been waiting for this entire time and the key to quickly reaching higher levels. If you can gain power quickly enough then just maybe you'll have the strength to deal with all these incidents you've been encountering...

The Heroic Spirit seems to understand your wishes and the screen shatters apart before drifting towards you lazily, dots of light in hundreds of colors slowly pouring towards you. You feel an incredibly sharp pain running through you followed by comforting warmth before the dreamscape shatters entirely. Once more sleep takes hold.

---

You are uncertain how long you sleep as dreams allude you, but eventually you awaken to a rather comfortable bed, at least far softer than the ones you've ever slept on. Opening your eyes, you find a softly lit and pure white ceiling above you, soft swirling patterns carved into the surface in such a way to be pleasing to the eye. From beside you a surprised voice calls out,

"Ah, you're finally awake Mr. Stitch. I'm very pleased you've recovered as well as you have, how are you feeling exactly though?"

Looking over you find a sad looking Valencia sat beside your bed, pristine white robes obviously disheveled with her fists balled up on her lap. Her eyes are slightly red and the corners of her eyes seem...

'Wait, was... was she crying?'

You think before sitting up, your body easily completing the action and your hands pressed against the bed without the slightest hint of pain bringing you to a sudden realization. Raising your hands up to eye level you find that they are completely healed, the pale white skin of your hands completely intact with only a dozen scars to remind you about what happened. On top of that the painful headache that had been following you for the past couple of days is gone...

You can't help, but let out a single word, "What?"

Only now do you notice the vicious rabbit curled up on your lap, its figure quickly standing up to nuzzle against your chest when it realizes you're finally awake. Valencia's voice carry over from beside you.

"You will be pleased to know that you have made a full recovery with even your soul being healed, it's incredibly rare for on outsider to receive the direct grace of the Great Tree That Embraces The Horizon. Before you begin to worry Mr. Stitch you naturally will not be charged for the care It granted."

Only after she finishes do you remember your myriad of concerns from the dreamscape, if you're healed then there's really no reason to stay here is there?

What do you do?

Health: Perfect

Status Effects: Hungry (-3 to all Rolls)

Heroic Legacy Points: 0

Level:
2
Experience: 187/200

Titles:

They Who Seek the Crown (Level One, 14/25) - A title earned by gaining the blessing of the God of War in a chance encounter with his will. It is a boon granted to those who seek to become like Lords, towering above the world with every action and word capable of bringing great waves of change. Currently it is weak and only grants you the power of Domination, but if you grow stronger and perform in a way that meshes with this Boon then perhaps its strength can grow.

Heroes can be Thieves Right? - In the name of Heroism you stole classified information from the Church of War without being caught. Now no innocent souls shall be ended with this dangerous knife, but ... yours might be if you mess up? Slightly increased chance of learning stealth and thievery related skills until discovered, lost if the Sealed Scroll is destroyed.

Ethical Scholar - A scholar's duty is that of facts, numbers, honesty, and boundaries. You have a devotion to the work of the written word that few would follow in the face of potential benefits. You seek simply to perform your work to the best of your ability and stand within the morals of your scholar code, even find yourself compelled to do so. Established personal Scholarly Code, sticking to it makes your work easier and better while going against it more difficult and with worse results.
  • Scholar Code I - No work is better than hasty work. {Provides +2 to scholarly rolls when you take your time, take -2 to scholarly rolls when you attempt to work with haste.}
  • Scholar Code II - Provide the facts to those that hire you, nothing more and nothing less. {Provides 2 bonus experience when followed, lose 2 experience when ignored.}
  • Scholar Code III - Judgement is the employer's job. {Provides 2 bonus experience when followed, lose 2 experience when ignored.}
  • Scholar Code IV - There is satisfaction in learning that which is known and that which is not. {Provides 2 bonus experience when learning new knowledge skills and advancing skill ranks.}

+ Dominate Writing (Level One, 2/25) - You've obtained a new power derived from your blessing from the God of War. It grants you the ability to draw strength from the written word though... You are utterly uncertain what that actually means. [Dominated Writings: 0/1]

[X] Quickly excuse yourself and leave.

I'd love to be concerned, but I don't trust that Elvish charm to kick up and cause more problems, irregardless of how much Valencia might desire it.

[X] Quickly excuse yourself and leave.
- [X] Go take the class for Stealth you purchased.

I want to see our new reflexes in action. Evasion training would be best but I can see the utility in stealth situations too.

[X] Ask if she was crying earlier.

Could make her a bit more willing to divulge any bits of knowledge on her order if we play on her guilt for trying to mind wammy us and by showing concern for her current state. So essentially use this option to subtly interrogate her for more knowledge and hopefully gain some extra experience from that.

[X] Ask if she was crying earlier.
[X] Question her about what happened.

I mean, I don't see why we can't do both if we're going to have a conversation longer than a single question and answer? We just got Ironclad Mind, so I'm much more confident that we won't be charmed, and I still believe that she'll try to avoid doing that anyway, so it's as good an opportunity to test it out before we encounter an actually hostile mind-whammier.

[X] Ask if she was crying earlier.
[X] Question her about what happened.

What I SUSPECT happened is that Valencia actually saw the Dawn Tree and how bad a shape it's in and that's why she was crying. I'm hoping that by asking her both questions, we'll learn more about the tree and what exactly happened to the MC. More knowledge can only help us down the line.

I'm still not ready to try for the Advancement Exam because I want the MC to learn how to use his equipment and hopefully actually fight something first. While he has to keep trying for greater heights to comply with the rules for the vessels of Heroic Spirits, I think that he can put off taking the exam as long as he's striving to improve his chances at succeeding at the exam. If he's dawdling because he doesn't care about gaining a rank, then he'll get in trouble.

[X] Ask if she was crying earlier.
[X] Question her about what happened.

Well, the receptionist told us:
The number of attempts is of course reset each rank, so I wouldn't be too worried about it. Besides, you've done well so far, I expect the Exam would be rather simple for you!"
So unless she is lying we have little reason not to take the exam soon.

So unless she is lying we have little reason not to take the exam soon.
Quests are offered based on rank so more dangerous combat quests are available to Porcelain members than to Wood members. They shouldn't be too dangerous, but I'd still like to be able to take out some Vicious Rabbits (through combat, not Domination) before leveling up.

We don't actually know what the Advancement Exam is so the MC might be able to pass it right now. My issue with doing so is that the MC is more of a scholar than an adventurer, and I'd like for him to be able to fight at least weak opponents.

[X] Ask if she was crying earlier.
[X] Question her about what happened.

I feel that having knowledge on what the current situation is seems like it would be useful to keep in mind for the future, though there are some sub reasons for this vote:
- it will let us get better knowledge of Valencia's personality
- we can gain context for the situation
- her patron soul healing us seems like kind of a big deal so that is also something to consider; even if we are under the war god, it might be beneficial to show some sign of thanks for the healing
- just accepting that something odd happened to us and ignoring it seems contrary to Those who seek the crown; an external force just effected our soul, even if the result was positive, I feel that not knowing would be a sign of not having control over our own being

The fact that we got our soul healed does seem to me like the good roll was worth the warning we received from both the god of war and the heroic spirit guide since it means we don't need to go on a separate quest chain

I do agree that we should at least learn to use our basic equipment before taking the advancement test since we don't actually know what it is; it could be a generic test, something chosen specifically for us or just something random from a selection of porcelain rank quests. And we have basically zero combat experience anyway so just getting anything would be good.
Though, I do wonder whether we can over-level on the advancement points and have a headstart for the rank after

Ok, I think I've caught up on my reread of the story. There's just a couple of things I wanted to point out.
Whatever the case may be, I did not feel any traces of a soul that isn't your own still within you. I will have to require you to visit here once a day for the next week to ensure there was nothing I missed, but you should ultimately be fine unless anything else occurs. I must apologize, but an injury to the soul is not something I am capable of fixing. It should slowly heal with time though if you need a more expedient solution then I recommend you visit the Temple of the Dead.

Priests of the Deathless One are exceptionally knowledgeable when it comes to the soul, such a treatment will of course strike a deep blow to your wallet.
I am so glad that the MC didn't have to go to the Temple of the Dead to get his soul healed, especially with the Shepard of the Dead probably there and how he's supposed to keep the Heroic Spirit a secret. It'll probably have to wait for after the Advancement Exam, but I strongly suggest that we research Meditation. Messing up Meditation can apparently cause soul injuries so the skill might be the start of figuring out how the MC can heal his own soul if something else happens in the future. It also leads to the ability to cast magic and hopefully greater resistance to outside influences. Though Iron Clad Mind should really help with the last one.
'They Who Seek The Crown, to hold it within your hand means to be unyielding before all but the Gods themselves. Seek the power to shatter the chains mortals would dare bind you with, those who would yield before another will than their own do not deserve to hold dominion. For those who resist the fetters of others great power awaits.

You have been warned.'
It looks like the MC only risks losing the Crown if he gives way to mortals. The Dawn Tree counts as a God if I remember correctly. Though the problem in that case was that it was trying to take the Crown away.

I'm wondering if our minion got the Cannabilize ability because we fed her Vicious Rabbit meat. If we fed her Forest Beat meat, would she get an attack ability? Maybe a defense ability from Ironhide Boar Sausages? If we can afford it, we might want to try buying one of the other types next time. The remaining 2 pounds of Vicious Rabbit meat goes bad in a day so we'll have to get more meat soon.

The prices before haggling were:
[] Forest Bear Meat - 1 silver for 3 pounds.
[] Vicious Rabbit Meat - 30 copper for 5 pounds.
[] Ironhide Boar Sausages - 80 copper for a pound.

We've currently got 1 Silver and 33 Coppers. If we want to kill and skin Vicious Rabbits, then we need the skinning knife (75 Coppers). Of course, killing Vicious Rabbits means that we get their meat as well so we wouldn't have to buy meat unless we want to see if it unlocks something upon Minion Level-Up.

As much as I want to research Elves, Monster Taming, and Meditation right away, I suggest that we focus on learning how to use the Hand-axe and how to evade. If the class for Stealth is available, we should probably take it as well in case we run into something too dangerous to fight.

We can use Dominate Writing for the Hand-axe and then practice using it and evasion in the training hall. The MC can take the Vicious Rabbits quest the next day. If he does well in it, then I'd feel a lot better about trying the Advancement Exam.

[X] Ask if she was crying earlier.
[X] Question her about what happened.

Alright, so, once the month is up we should probably check out the Traits page again, because there are some pretty good things on offer. Even discounting the possibility of unlocking swift growth II, we've still got lots of pretty good Traits to pick up.

  • Lucky I is nice and I'd like to be buying the next levels of it and Swift Growth when we can.
  • A Sage's Eyes is really expensive, but would be an absolutely great Trait for our dude who wants to Learn Everything. If we earn enough points over the month I say we get it, but if we're strapped for points when the month is up it'd be better to just get four or five less powerful/expensive Traits.
  • Wise Words is looking pretty good. Giving our guile hero a way to be supernaturally convincing is probably a good investment. It's pretty pricey though, so I'd put it in the same category as A Sage's Eyes, get it if we have a lot of points, skip if we don't.
  • Scholarly Determination looks very attractive to me. It reads as a boost to all EXP we earn via following our Scholarly Code, counterbalanced by a harsher EXP penalty when we break it. But that's alright, we've been really good about following our Scholarly Code up till now. For just 3 points, another EXP booster is practically a must have.
  • Aspire to Sagehood is an EXP booster for certain skills, and it only costs four points. Another must have.
  • Connection with Beyond is majorly iffy. On the one hand, we've just seen how contacting Divinities can be dangerous. On the other hand, contacting Divinities has been far and away the best way for us to gain the most Points and EXP in the least amount of time. In my opinion, I'd say get it.
  • Natural Gatherer is super cheap and even if we Rank Up we're probably not going to be able to totally abandon herb gathering quests. It's only 1 pont, so if we've got the extra one to spare it might be useful.

All in all, I'd want to nab Lucky, Scholarly Determination, Aspire to Sagehood, and Connection with Beyond once the month is up, with anything besides that being just gravy. I think we can manage to earn 16 Points in a month, especially if we Rank Up, thus getting access to more of the Guild Library, more important Scholarly Quests, and whatever we manage to accomplish with the Dawn Tree plot line.

But that's just the stuff we know is available, and I have absolutely no idea what we might unlock going forward. Another level of one of our current Traits? Something completely different because of dice rolls? A super shiny Trait that's available on level up? Who knows!

And just to do my part on the speculation and Questioning Everything, I've been doing a bit of re-reading and noticed something.

When we first become a Heroic Spirit, the God of War takes notice of us, gives us his blessing, and tells us a bit of what we are. We do some more digging in the Temple of War, and find out about the Mountain range defensive barrier thing, find out the Gods died/left, and then we immediately get attacked by... something.

Most worrying about the classified scroll was that the moment you noticed it for what it truly is a strange sensation seemed to come over you, a horrifyingly cold sense of death seemed to bear down upon you. It was when you were absolutely certain that your life was about to come to an end that the multicolored light began to burn from your chest followed rapidly by a searing pain on your forehead that seemed to die your vision gold. By the time your vision returns to normal that threat of death had entirely vanished leaving the room unchanged aside from the deep-seated fear still running rampantly through your head.

Learned a fragment of the Forbidden Knowledge regarding the departure of the Gods of your Kingdom from the mortal realm, You attracted the attention of ... something, Earned 75 Experience

Whatever it is, it seems that the Heroic Blessing the God of War imbued was enough to stop it, or at least get it to pause it's current actions. Additionally, we earn a MASSIVE amount of EXP here, compared to the 10 we got from communing with the War God and receiving The Crown/Dominate, or the 4 EXP we earned learning about Transcendental skills. The absolutely massive amount of EXP we earned tells me something happened that was both more important and more dangerous than communing with the War God and receiving his Blessing, so we might have actually been targeted by the God of Death him/it self.

Coincidentally, right after this high ranking members of the Death God's clergy come to town and speak with the Lord. I think what happened here was that the Death God and/or his Church set up a system where anybody who learns the forbidden knowledge about the Gods is immediately struck down via some sort of automated country wide Death Curse, and us being a Heroic Vessel allowed us to cheat/avoid/otherwise not die to thus. Because of this result, the Death Cultists were dispatched to our Township to see what's up, and their mission may or may not be locating whoever tripped their system and executing them in person. So uh, we might want to avoid these guys.

But looking back, I can kinda see why our Heroic Spirit wants a month vacation from us, we've been abusing it and forcing it to stand up to things more powerful than itself since practically the first day we got it.

I thought I was finished with my reread, but I realized that I forgot the Sidestory.
"It has been too long, far too long yet still the work remains. Fools, a kingdom of utter morons struggling to win a war that cannot be won. Just give up and let me rest at last..."

After those words echoed through the city, heard only by hordes of mindlessly wandering undead, the skeleton's eye flames extinguished once more. Where once the countless undead wandered without thought they began to leave the bounds of the city, walking towards the edge of the island.

If any were here to see they might notice the undead intent on crossing the lake into the mortal world. From the depths of it tendrils rised to fight against them, able to handle at first but rapidly outnumbered...
Two things here- First, somehow the war is keeping the God of Death from resting (staying dead?). We know that the Three Saviors set up the System so I'm guessing that he sacrificed his ability to truly die to support the System. Maybe he's tied to combat skills, and that's why he's complaining about the ongoing war?

The second thing is that this is frightenly remniscent of the book on advice for beginning adventurers.
Little information is explained to new adventurers joining the Guild as a form of test, non-inquisitive or those only seeking quick fame and wealth will find the job incredibly challenging. Such an act puts the lives of new recruits in danger, but it's better a few overly zealous idiots die than they end up waking a sleeping Lich that proceeds to turn the countryside into the Land of the Dead. Considering you are reading this then chances are you're not a complete fool, so allow me to introduce you to the basics of the Adventurer's Guild.

WE REALLY NEED TO LEARN COMBAT SKILLS!!!
