It feels like we're not getting as much training done as we could be because the MC has to keep taking missions to pay for inn rooms. Going outside of town will probably take longer and is more dangerous than buying food, but I did want to test the MC in combat before trying the Advancement Exam anyway.
The listed questions are everything I can think of. I'm really hoping to find a cheaper option for housing than inn rooms. While the MC currently has -3 to all rolls because of Hungry, it can be hard to find a time when the Guild hall isn't busy so I'm going to vote for the MC to take the chance if it appears.

I mean, we're only going far enough away so that we're not bothering anyone with our campfire. We'll probably be right outside the town walls.
But yeah, we should try to avoid the piecemeal vote-to-update pace as much as possible, so writing-in what we'll probably want to do immediately afterwards instead of waiting for the next segment to mention it is a good idea.

That all sounds right.

Hopefully, it'll be safe outside of possibly Vicious Rabbits, but I just keep thinking about that Forest Bear corpse that was just lying in a clearing. It screamed "TRAP!", and we never found out exactly what was going on there. Oh well, we shouldn't be going anywhere near that area.
Forest Bears are distinguished from regular brown bears by "very faint designs of a band of green thorns appearing on the fur on their head." Dominating our minion led to a crown being burned into the fur on her head. The information about the man-eating Forest Elves includes, "Others claim the King Under the Leaves made a pact with the Demons to protect their creator." Maybe either the tree or the king of the Forest Elves is dominating/taming brown bears into becoming Forest Bears? Wait, how did I miss how similar the names are until now?!
Now I really want to research Monster Taming, but it should probably wait until after the Advancement Exam. Being a higher rank gives the MC access to more of the library after all. Though we might want to research it anyway if we can because the Vicious Rabbits quest specifies that we're not supposed to damage the fields while hunting down the rabbits. I'm not sure how much additional damage our minion could do though.
I'm looking over the last update again, and I think Valencia lost her healing powers. Moreover, I think people died because she couldn't heal them. "As a Dawn Priestess, breaking a Vow to the Divine Tree cuts off our access to It's power and without that power I couldn't heal all those who needed to be..."
I wonder how she broke her Vow. Maybe she was supposed to keep the true condition of the Dawn Tree a secret, and the MC seeing the Dawn Tree so damaged meant she broke her Vow? She talks about the Guardian Trees as if she's seen them so she probably knows what the Dawn Tree is really like. I feel a bit better about her after this chapter.

I'm pretty sure that was an explanation of a hypothetical. If she broke her Vow she would then lose her power. Otherwise there'd be nothing holding her back from explaining to us if her Vow was already broken (plus the previous patient would still be lying there injured because she couldn't heal him). We don't have the context to know why she's crying.

With knowledge of the local region and harvesting skill, I think this should be fine
Okay, so I'm inclined to believe that Valencia does still have her abilities and the fact that she's acting in the same manner despite our increased mental resistance indicates to me that she is probably being sincere with her thoughts on healing.
I'm curious as to what the Vow that she was at risk of breaking by telling us the reason she was crying might have been but there was a lot going on at that moment so there's not real way to be sure.
A few guesses as to why she was crying could include:
- as suggested by someone earlier, she only now realised just how badly off her patron is
- there might have been something more to the healing than we realise
- she might have seen something relating to us (such as the war god or the heroic spirit); she might not have understood it but
- Actually, upon looking back at the text, she mentioned that we will always be welcome with her patron; this indicates that her reason for crying was related to this:
-- it could be tears of joy at seeing such a miracle performed
-- it could be related to her knowing something about why her Patron helped; e.g. maybe the patron thinks that we will be in for some hard times and will need help and Valencia's feels sorry for us having that kind of destiny
There are definitely more possibilities that could be considered but these are the ones that are coming to my mind now.
As for how this relates to what the Vow is could really be any number of things from simply not sharing the thought process of the patron to us potentially having interacted with something incredibly unique and potentially integral to the patron/group.
Whatever the case, I think that one of the list of things that we plan on checking about in the library should probably include learning about various gods/patrons and how they interact with the world.

You shake your head before pushing yourself onto the edge of the bed, your companion hopping down onto the floor excitedly.
"Thanks a lot for the invitation and I would enjoy a longer chat, but at the moment I have the pressing matter of my own hunger and near poverty to deal with. Until we meet next Ms. Valencia, take care."
Throwing out some niceties, you quickly leave the medical ward and leave a somewhat surprised Elf behind. In the main lobby of the Guild Hall you find the morning press has thinned out, the lines mostly empty and thus a perfect opportunity to ask some questions! Quickly you hurry over to the receptionist that always handles your affairs here, her ever present smile a warming sight after the clearly depressed Elven Healer's behavior.
"Ah, Mr. Stitch you're back already? You wouldn't be here to take the Exam would you?"
In response you shake your head and lean forward against the counter before you set to work with curiosity as your drive.
"Not yet, I am actually here to ask you some things if you have the time. By chance, does the guild offer any alternatives for housing, or food to the Adventurers? Even just discounts would be quite a big help with how tight my budget has been lately."
Your first question is met immediately with a negative response as she shakes her head,
"Nope, the Guild provides no assistance in those areas, can't have the Adventurers becoming too dependent on the Guild now can we? Besides the expenses for such things would be incredibly massive even in small towns like our own, imagine trying to pay the costs for food or lodging for several hundred people every day. We can provide our members with the services we have because almost everything the Guild makes is poured into it, even I only make fifteen silvers a month working here.
Most every receptionist in Guild Halls are retired Adventurers, or those on extended leave who use the money they built up adventuring to get by. As a concrete example though - the production cost for the Guild Card you use? It costs four gold coins to manufacture every one of those. Anything else?"
You spend a few moments in thought about the sheer waste involved in the production of Guild Cards considering just how many Adventurers die in the wild. Sighing, you reply.
"Yeah, how is it the Guild is able to know Adventurers finish the requester's work even if we come straight here after finishing a job?"
She grins at that one and reaches under the table to pull out a blank sheet of paper with several archaic runes scrawled along the edges.
"By using this, the requester just writes down the job results on a paper like this that they are given when the request is first posted and the words are instantly received by the Guild Hall's Intelligence Department. It's only really found in township level Halls and above, the system is rather costly to implement starting out, but the paper the clients use are cheap to mass produce."
You nod before pausing, your thoughts running wild as you hesitate to ask the next question.
'Considering how strange it is that she's always here to process my requests it really is something I should ask, but what if she gets angry because I pointed it out? Maybe she really is some kind of advanced golem?"
You can't help, but sigh again, something that's become a habit for yourself these days, before deciding to push forward regardless.
"I... I am honestly curious about one more thing, why is that every time I come in you are here to take care of whatever request or questions I have to ask? Its been bothering me for a while now."
She looks at you for a long moment before laughing, you see her tap the counter and the next thing you know she just kind of... appears on top of it, sitting with her legs crossed and her face almost touching your own. Her voice is much quieter now as she basically whispers to you,
"You always get me because I find you incredibly interesting, John. An orphan taken in by the Academy when he was just three years old, raised under their care and with all the signs that you would grow up to be an excellent scribe, and yet one day you just asked to leave. Out of the blue you suddenly became obsessed with running off to become an Adventurer, now just what kind are you going to be?
It's thrilling really, watching people with seemingly completely unrelated skill sets create their own path to be an Adventurer. I really want to see what you end up becoming Mister Scholar, will you stick to and use what you know to make something unique or just take up the easy road and learn to fight like all the rest do?
So far you've been incredibly entertaining, so I think you earned a little reward. Hmm, let's see what should I give you?"
She sits back and places a finger to her chin, your sight quickly going to the others in the Guild during her lapse in attention only to find them all staring. When you look back she seems to have reached a decision as she's scribbling on a piece of paper only to quickly fold it up and hand it to you.
Next thing you know she's standing behind the counter, perfectly composed as if that weird interaction never occurred.
"Well then, that'll be all for today Mr. Stitch, I do have work to do after all."
It's not hard to realize that she's giving you a dismissal with no real option for rebuttal, especially considering you couldn't even see her movements earlier... Letting out an exasperated sigh, you turn and leave the Guild to take care of the next item on your agenda - cooking some food and seeing if you can harvest something edible nearby.
It's clear in your mind that your rabbit is excited about your goal, the feeling of joy you get from it's connection enough to raise your spirits even as the furball rubs up against your leg as you walk. Shooing it to the side so you don't trip, a thought comes to mind.
'It's been a while and she has already gained a level, so perhaps it's time to give her a name?'
What do you name the Vicious Rabbit? [] Write-in.
---
It's well into the afternoon when you finally arrive at a small copse of trees outside of town, your companion hopping around you with it's ears raised high and it's head constantly turning to survey the area. Along the way you have managed to scrounge up a dozen potatoes thanks to your minion's sensitive nose and thankfully encountered nothing violent along the way. However, you're pretty sure you saw a pack of Vicious Rabbits tearing into a field you passed earlier.
You set about getting a campfire started and actually succeed in lighting it on your first try, a sense of accomplishment filling you for doing something without guidance after so long. All of your youth was spent following instructions, learning what your teachers told you to, and completing homework they assigned.
It's barely been a few weeks since you became an Adventurer, but it really is quite nice to do what you want to do. It's only as you are watching the meat cook over the fire that you remember the note the receptionist wrote, taking it out of a pocket you unfold it to find...
"Well, this should be a worthy reward for you, John. I'll let you know my name! I am Liara Kestler, you're welcome kid~"
Your hand twitches as you read it with an eyebrow raised and mild annoyance at the 'reward' she's given you. Balling it up and shoving it into your pocket, you take a roasted meat skewer from above the fire and begin to tear into it while tossing the other to your follower.
"Really, what kind of reward is your name?"
You mutter even as you tear into the oily, crispy, and unevenly cooked meat.

I suspect that knowing true names will end up being important later on, so whoever the administration of the adventurers is, being on first name basis with them cant be awful... unless they're demons.

We should at least try to find a good campsite, if we fail we can go get an inn room but if we succeeded at finding someplace nice and defensible we'd save a ton of money.
Maybe a cliffside or little cave? Or a big fallen tree, someplace we could fortify. We can practice wilderness survival skills while we're at it. We don't have to camp out every night, but even a few nights a week camping is a big savings.

I just like the name Velvet, but I might change it if a name I like better is posted. We're spending a lot of money on inn rooms so an alternative would be nice. We should probably figure out how to use the hand-axe, shield, and dagger soon though in case he's attacked.
I wonder what the MC would find if he researched the receptionist's name. It's strange how she tapped the counter before apparently moving too fast for the MC to see. Is she really fast because she's a retired adventurer, or is there some sort of magic going on there? She can't be a pure hologram because she was able to give the MC a paper, and she's being paid, but it's still weird how she's always at the Guild whenever the MC is there no matter what.
The receptionist hinted that learning how to fight was the boring path of becoming an Adventurer, but I'm not sure what the MC is supposed to do when he's attacked if he doesn't fight? Well, I guess he could try Dominating all of his opponents or persuading them (once he gets that skill, trait, or ability), but that probably wouldn't always work so knowing how to fight would be a good backup.
I guess the question to ask here would be, "What exactly the MC want to get out of being an Adventurer?" He seems to want the freedom to decide things for himself, but how is he going to respond when there is an opponent (human or animal) to what he wants to do?
[X] Look for a decent campsite, it would honestly save a decent amount of money if you slept outside. Though.... there is possible danger there as well.

... well, that just added to the list of things we should research soon
Name is fairly basic and I don't have anything against the current lead

My reason for voting for this isn't actually for finding a campsite; we don't have any equipment for that sort of thing and our Survival skill is low enough to not really matter if we planned on sleeping there. Though, it might also give a bonus to our local knowledge, though considering the potatoes didn't do anything for our Harvest skill progression, I'm not expecting it.
The real reason that I'm voting for this is the possibility of an encounter; we're currently 5 experience away from levelling up so I think that this would provide the needed push.

I think she was getting at the difference between specializing in authoromancy or learning the adventuring basics with everyone else. Something like that
You shake your head before pushing yourself onto the edge of the bed, your companion hopping down onto the floor excitedly.
I guess that was pretty rudely abrupt, but I honestly couldn't think of any subjects to continue the conversation with her for a more polite length.
So the homunculus theory was bupkis, instead the Receptionist is probably a retired Adventurer who was just stalking us, and we already know that high level people can have some weird stuff going on with them. So far she seems to have shown super agility and not really needing to sleep.
What time of day is it? I think we just had lunch after the "morning rush" in the Guild Hall, so it feels kind of early to already be looking for accommodations for the night. Could we have a time of day notification at the end of each update along with the current status to help plan our schedule @adwarf?
Also I'm surprised John didn't cook and eat enough to completely get rid of his hunger despite having so many extra potatoes.
I don't really want to sleep outside of the safety of the town until we at least get Beginner level combat skill to defend ourselves. We don't have any armor or knowledge of how to wield our axe, dagger, or shield, and our lone Rabbit isn't going to be enough to save us if we're attacked in our sleep by a pack of Rabbits like the one we just passed by a minute ago, let alone anything stronger, which is everything else in this forest.
However, if we're going to do it either tonight or in the near future, we need to prepare for it properly.
[X] Hazel
Velvet's also a good name though.
[X] Head back into town to...
-[X] Visit a Guild facility.
--[X] Research in the library.
---[X] Monster Taming/Raising (Vicious Rabbit focus).
---[X] Skinning/Harvesting Beasts and Monsters. Make a useful copy for Dominating before a relevant Quest.
---[X] Wilderness Survival and Camping.
