I like the idea, but why do you set the maximum at 50 GP? We have 155 GP, I would certainly be willing to spend 90 to get healed immediately.

There is no particular reason why I set it at 50 G.P and honestly I would be fine to go higher. I just really wanted to get the full healing but don't want to bankrupt us either so I made this write-in in the hopes of finding a alternative solution.

[X] To settle for the cheaper, and slower option. You will have to make do for now.

"Is there perhaps a way I could pay using GP instead? My wallet is a little tight at the moment."

Your question is met with a shake of her head as she replies,

"Afraid not, though this infirmary is inside the Guild those of us working here are in more partners than employees. If it helps, the Branches of Dawn who runs this infirmary spends half of all gains on supporting numerous orphanages across the Mortal Realm. Any money you spend here will do much to help those whose parents have fallen while protecting your Kingdom and the lands of other Races."

A brilliant smile breaks out on her face and you can feel a part of you starting to cave, like a foreign influence is trying to bend your will towards paying more. In an instant your forehead seems to be set on fire and you realize the crown symbol on your brow seems to have surfaced as an archaic, familiar voice echoes inside of your head.

'They Who Seek The Crown, to hold it within your hand means to be unyielding before all but the Gods themselves. Seek the power to shatter the chains mortals would dare bind you with, those who would yield before another will than their own do not deserve to hold dominion. For those who resist the fetters of others great power awaits.

You have been warned.'

When the voice disappears from your mind you find your head somehow hurting even worse than before, but more surprisingly is Valencia's condition. A trickle of blood flows from a corner of her mouth and she has a surprised expression as she stares at you.

"You have got to be joking, did this lady actually try to make me spend more? Was it intentional, or just something that Elves do on instinct? More worryingly though... would I have even noticed if I did not have the Crown?"

The room falls into silence as the two of you stare at each other, Valencia clearly unwilling to comment and you just utterly uncertain about the topic. You were a scholar of common knowledge, not a researcher of the esoteric or arcane.

What do you do?
[] Use the situation to your advantage, even if she did it unintentionally she did try to control your thoughts. Might be able to get a huge amount knocked off that full healing if not get it for free.

Established personal Scholarly Code, sticking to it makes your work easier and better while going against it more difficult and with worse results.

I'm pretty sure mind control is illegal and she won't start anything since a commotion would draw others in. Unless she's secretly an adept melee fighter there's no way she can avoid making a commotion and ensuring we won't talk.

Oh. Important to know.
Also important to remember-the power of Dominion is how we've got our rabbit tamed.
We lose that, the Bunny and anyone else dominated is freed to wreak havoc...Admittedly that Killer Rabbit MIGHT not go wild, but I think just to be safe we may wish to consider reading up more about Monster taming in general.

honestly the 25% exp increase still doesn't seem worth it to me for that cost.

Just gonna try to argue for it, but it's a permanent 25% increase to ALL EXP that we earn. Not just leveling EXP, but also skill training EXP, Domination EXP, thread discussion EXP, all that good stuff. It's a permanent boost to any type of growth we could possibly encounter, and that's a pretty good thing to nab when we're low level like this.

That's just my two cents, anyway.

While she did try to Charm us into paying more, we still don't know whether it was intentional or if it was an "always active" ability. Plus, our Blessing did something to her that caused her to start bleeding internally, so let's not try to play the victim card when she, by all rights, got hit with the worse backlash.

[X] Pretend like nothing happened and carry on paying for the cheaper healing.

Still need to get healed, so we might as well do what we came here to do.

[] Storm out of here, you would rather not try to haggle with someone who can apparently control your thoughts.

We need our hands healed and we still don't know whether she intentionally tried to Charm us or if it's instinctive/automatic.

[] Write-in.

Maybe just apologize to her and ask that she not try to Charm us in the future, as we have a skill to resist it?

While this means that we can't get mind controlled or anything similar without losing the Blessing, it might also mean that we are obligated to disobey authority figures that we can't agree with and can't ask for mercy on the battlefield. It all depends on how yielding before another is defined and what it encompasses. Let me give some examples:

We're in the guild and hear news about some rescue attempt or something. We want to join, as SV would never give up the chance to rescue someone in distress, but a higher up in the guild forbids it. Because the dude forbid it, we don't go, even if we really want to. Bam, yielded to another, power gone.

Or maybe we're fighting some kind of super powerful dude we can't hope to beat. He tells us that if we lay down our arms and surrender he'll spare our life, and we do. Bam, we yielded to another, we lose powers.

So yeah, I don't know how exactly yielding to another is defined, but we'll have to watch out for things that might revoke our right/worthiness to Dominate.

[X] Pretend like nothing happened and carry on paying for the cheaper healing.

Trying to take advantage makes it look like we're bullying the medic. Let's get our treatment and go.

I'm leaning towards that being an instinctual/automatic Charm ability, rather than her purposely trying to screw us. After all, if she just wanted more money out of us, she could've just charged an artificially higher price from the beginning instead of using the charity proceeds appeal. Heck, she didn't actually ask us to spend more anyway, she just said that the proceeds from what we were going to pay would go to orphanages, John's just assuming that was her goal because that was his reaction.

I'm voting for this because we need healing, but I'm pretty suspicious of her. She wants us to check in with her every day this week. Is it really for the MC's health or to mind-bend him? We should probably read up on Elves the next chance we get.

I'm also curious as to why the Guild has partnered with a mind-bending Elf. Are the best healers all Elves? Is it a way to safely practice resisting mental influence?

I'd be tempted to ask her more about the infirmary's relationship with the guild, but I don't want her to ask questions in return.

"Afraid not, though this infirmary is inside the Guild those of us working here are in more partners than employees. If it helps, the Branches of Dawn who runs this infirmary spends half of all gains on supporting numerous orphanages across the Mortal Realm.
"You are certainly not lying about what you said, someone of your strength simply cannot fool the will of the Dawn Tree.
'It appears the records were not lying, Elves do seem to have some kind of vague and enchanting nature about them. What was it they said about those of weaker will who come into prolonged contact with them? Something about the formation of an obsession that leads people to devote their lives to the Elf they met?

It looks like the Elves are in charge of the infirmary, and it's not just a single Elf being employed by the infirmary. I'm still trying to figure out why the Guild has partnered with the Elves here. Does it have something to do with the inability to lie to an Elf? That seems like a big risk, considering the potential for obsession.

Imagine the following scenario: A guild member is badly injured so that they have to spend a relatively long time in the infirmary before they can be released safely. Only, by this time they're so obsessed with the Elf/Elves who took care of them that they promptly get injured again so that they can visit the infirmary. This happens over and over again until the guild member takes too big of a risk and dies. What precautions are in place to prevent this from happening?

[] Use the situation to your advantage, even if she did it unintentionally she did try to control your thoughts. Might be able to get a huge amount knocked off that full healing if not get it for free.

But why would the Guild want the elves to charm their members when it can lead to an obsession with the elves?
Maybe they don't know or don't care that much because they're charmed, or the elves just mutually agree through laws or whatever not to exploit it that much? Or people are aware but it's not powerful enough to be that big deal, at least for powerful people in the guild who maybe have some kind of magical countermeasure so they still have ultimate control. This is the only elf we've met right? Maybe this power is uncommon or varies in strength.

There's loads of reasonable explanations, I'm sure it will become clear in time.

The MC, a lower-level scholar has read about how elves can charm people into obsession.
What awaits you is complete silence, the glow in Valencia's eyes slowly fading as she brings a up in what you assume is an inquisitive pose. It is incredibly fascinating how the sight of a single finger, so perfect that it doesn't seem fit for the mortal world and utterl-

You shake your hand to look away from her face as you begin to drill yourself on the various mathematical problems the Academy's teachers had burned into your mind, all in an effort to drive away the odd growing obsession you feel.

This is with a single visit, and IT'S NOT EVEN OVER YET. That's why I find it so strange that the Guild has partnered up with elves and don't even seem to have any safety precautions in place. One of the tags on this quest is to "question everything" so I'm hoping that bringing this up will lead to clues or generate XP based on the discussion.
