There seems to be some confusion as to what Caliburn actually is going on here, so let me just take a moment to state that Caliburn is entirely different from Skin of Steel. They're related projects, but they're not the same. Caliburn is Iris upgrading her chassis into one capable of combat. Skin of Steel is full reverse engineering of Mary's nanomaterial armour/flight system. Some of what one develops may have applications to the other, but they are not the same.
The confusion might have been because Avatar (Iris better body) lead to opening both Caliburn (upgrade to weapons for Avatar level body) and A Skin of Steel (mass produced upgrades derived from side research of Avatar) while Incarnate (basic body) lead to Avatar (combat grade body) research. The possibility of some extra goodies like research into better personal weapons was probably to much to hope for.
Plus I'm partially for it due to more interactions with Iris. I like the character and want more of her.
There is no basis for this in the quest thus far. Not even from those who live in the Dark.
And frankly, if there was, hiding won't help you, or us. anyway. Just means you get blindsided instead of being prepared.
The fact that everyone agrees (even races from the Second Contact) that staying in the void between stars is unhealthy.
The fact we have absolutely no clue why and for what reason Amanda and Mary created the void crystal.
The fact that there are things that made the First need brown pants and caused them to delete a large amount of data and remove the path to that data by destroying part of Vision abilities.
The fact that some races have a tendency to ascend and their solar systems are left alone by Shiplords due to poking leading to lost ships in a process that is observed but not really undestood.
You are absolutely right. There are no hints at very scary things (that others stay away from) waiting to be discovered in this quest. And the artifact that neither Amanda or Mary can remember any hint what they wanted to use it for when it was made will be completely safe to poke and won't lead down dangerous rabbit holes requiring san checks.
To be honest it most likely will be safe and we will just waste an action (or multiple if we try again and again) due to the DC being high enough that we need to roll an 80 to pass because we don't have enough bonus points. Here's hoping that we won't end up with a dark magical girl Amanda by accident:).

Scary things does not mean Lovecraftian.
The known galaxy is ruled by a race that extracts a periodic tithe of 90% of species population, and renders them down into bioslurry for ship production. That genocides other races based on arbitary criteria. And it's been doing this for millions of years.

That's plenty scary in it's own right, and mindbendingly disturbing.
Cthulu and Nyarlathotep need not apply.

REASONS
Nothing particularly complicated here.

Open research slot goes to Inheritors Legacy.
Crack open the vaults, and see if the dead left anything for this situation.
Do it with Vega's help, since she helped restore them in the first place.

The other major Research slots remain unchanged.

Spoken Word continues; we might be able to push out at least one more class of Speakers before the Shiplords are expected.
Valkyries is necessary to train more Unisonbound. Synergizes with the Unison Training personal action, and is supported by Mother of Circles.

Tinker because I want to crack the last artifact we have on our docket. Mystery box calls to my soul.
A Healers Fire isn't finished. Neither is Of Words And Melody. So we continue both.

And yet the Shiplords are the ones who tell you not to linger between the stars...
They warn us about a lot of things.
I do not assume they have our welfare at heart when they do so, not without independent corroboration.
Especially given how....vague warnings about lingering are when trips can take years to complete.

Before First Sol there were exploratory ships out in the black, and as far as we know they didn't stumble over anything.
Entirely possible there is a threat out there. The G6 have been out there, and they haven't corroborated yet.
And there's no current evidence of Lovecraftian fuckery.

[X] Mentor: When Iris found her first friends in Aya and her sister Nei, you had been glad. You'd not expected that, most of a decade later, you'd be teaching one of those friends how to understand and use her Focus. But what Aya might be able to do, once she does know those things, would make the effort worth it regardless. That it lets her be near to those she cares for, well…that's just a happy side-effect.

Except, of course, for the very nature of reality.

We've talked this over before, and the distance between two points in this universe is definitely sqrt(T^2 - X^2 - Y^2 - Z^2), except where gravity or gravity-related things warp it even further. Now, does that look remotely Euclidean to you? Because it's not.

Mathematicians eat non-Euclidean geometry for breakfast.

It's only scrawny little sheltered liberal arts types from Rhode Island who freak out and start gibbering at the idea.

I think we really need to look at the more short term research goals that can help against the regulars coming.

Gestalt can wait.

I think we should do

[] Inheritor's Legacy: The Elder First left much more behind in their Vault than just Vision and the Inviolate Matter shell they'd called the Adamant. Vega's last Miracle during your time as President restored it completely, but there's still a great deal to explore. What was left within the Reliquaries could spell survival for your species.

as our next option.

Well, I decided to go with all the things I am actually curious about - Inheritor's Legacy, Void Crystal, Those Great Creations...

This differs from my original plan by swapping Gestalt and Inheritor's Legacy.

This differs from uju32's plan in lacking The Spoken Word, because meh I wanna take a look at the Circles-as-Artifact instead.
