You Think, Therefore You Are (A 5E D&D Slime Quest)

Hey QM do we get a portrait for our character? I tried looking for slime bard portraits earlier today though I couldn't find any.

Character picture will be put up after your Bard College is chosen.

We can sing comedy song? Noice

Also does anyone else think its a shame this quest isn't 'You think therefore you slime'?

Hmm... I may change that.

Working on update. May not be a lot of story, as I still need to know the College. The College also determines what the poor Bard had on him when he died. Weapons, story hooks, clothes, trinkets, that sort of thing.

Character Creation 0.3: Subclass
Music. Storytelling. Poems. Lewd Jokes. Biting political commentary. Insults veiled in compliments. The Hurdy-Gurdy.

You ponder all of these and more as the thoughts start to simmer and settle. Your brain - oh, that's what that thinking organ is - is able to sort through the concepts of life, emotion, and what it means to be a Humanoid Bard.

Oh, so that's what it means to be a humanoid.

You look at your hand. In one second, it turns into your natural substance, with only the dead being's skeleton bobbing inside. A second more, and the jelly turns to flesh.

Ooze, flesh, ooze, flesh.

Neat.

[1 False Appearance Gained]
[Remember, maximum forms is 3 + Int Modifier]

While you could spend all day - and you know what that is now that the concept of time is something you can grasp - changing between forms, there are other things you need to find out about. Like the bag and instrument right next to you. Obviously it belonged to the one you consumed. Therefore, it's now yours.

For some reason, you feel as if they'd have agreed, if the tables had been turned.

Wait, why do tables turn?

Not important. You pick up the thing that wasn't in the bag.

Without even thinking about it, you give the Hurdy-Gurdy a strum.

...you could get used to this.

Okay, here me out: The College of Whispers. We get decent Psychic Sword Damage, We get irrational fear causing, we get shadow stealing, which is both even more magical disguises, as well as a broad-level understanding of the victim that'll let us pretend to be them convincingly (and if we steal their form our racial way, we're basically a doubled-up perfect mimic that can flawlessly steal not only their physical appearance but also their identity), and we'll eventually get the blackmail version of that psychic paper from Doctor Who.

Whispers looks fun, but Glamour works well either solo or as a dungeon boss (which I only just realized might be a feasible path)

My god this is difficult.

Do we want to be SPOOKY SCARY SKELETON SLIME or YELLOW TEMPERANCE SLIME.

Ummmmmmmmmmmmm.... ummmmmmmmmmmmmmm...

Fuck it. Yellow Temperance Slime is go.

I think if we are ever actually being attacked, that's a lose condition right there. If we are going to be a bard, we are either going to find a party to join or die. And we're going to have better things to spend our reaction on.

When I talked about stat improvements, I was thinking of our charisma, given it will (or at least should) be the stat we use the most and our spellcasting stat. We'll gain an ability at level 6 that we can use to give us (and our party) advantage on saving throws against being charmed. If we manage to get into a party with a paladin, that will be an appreciable bonus to our wisdom save right there.

Believe me when I say that from my expierience melee combat is unavoidable in DND, even if you have a party, it simple means that your GM get's to upscale the encounter, to make it still within the adviced exp range of an daily encounter

As such having either an exit from melee fighting or being tanky enough to survive a turn is vital

And in regards to the level 6 ability, while having advantage is nice, a positive modifer on these rolls is better, especially if you gain profiency in them, mostly because Countercharm requires us to use it before charm is cast and charm user usually use charm as a combat starter or combat avoider, while proficiency is always on,

Also in regards to the paladin bit, that only works within 10 feet until he is 18, which is nothing in combat

That being said, I certainly see the merits of improving our Charisma stat, for our own Spell attack modifier and our own Spell save DC and will certainly support any decision in that direction

Hmm college of lore would go more into the direction of a wizard and is really powerful combat wise, since it allows us to use our inspiration on the enemy attack roll and would allow us later on to learn 2 spells from any spellcaster, which is really appealing

However Glamour in combination with our natural shapeshifitng could lead to some nice homebrewing, I think I will stick with Glamour for now

Tumbling is D&D's second best unearthed arcana mechanic (the first is the Stone Sorcerer's teleport stab).
