You know, with this my head canon is that we just ate Dio.

Works! Dio was very charismatic.

All monks gain Unarmored Defense, I believe?

They do, but with our boni a barbarian would be better for us , since Barbarian unarmored defese is Con+Dex, while Monks have Wis+Dex

What is it with y'all wanting magical slime

It's less that and more the fact that between our innate abilities and somewhat poorly rolled stats, we have more to gain from a charisma or Int based class

Had we rolled better, for example we could have played a pretty good barbarian or some other class but with 2 8's that goes pretty quickly out of the window unless with wish to throw away our racial advantages

Also since I was bored here are the stats for a Bard
Str: 8
Dex: 14
Con: 11 + 2
Int: 13 + 1
Wis: 8
Cha: 15

If we're talking about stat spreads, here's another possibility:

Str: 8
Dex: 11
Con: 8 + 2
Int: 13 + 1
Wis: 14
Cha: 15

I don't find this build all that attractive, because it's a pure spellcaster build, which might save us from being charmed, but means that we are dead meat the moment anybody get's into combat range, due our Combination of low AC (due low dex) and low health (due low Con)

Dex is by far the most powerful stat, mechanically, especially early in the game, where the attack boni are still fairly low
Even more so for a bard, whose weapon of choice is a finesse weapon, unless of course you are from the College of Valor and who wear light armor, that has no hard limit on dex that can be added on the AC

Would this be a better alternative then?

Str: 8
Dex: 14
Con: 8 + 2
Int: 13 + 1
Wis: 11
Cha: 15

[X] Bard

We will be the most charismatic slime that lived, stealing not only memories but also hearts. We're seducing every door we pass!

Yeah that would be a really good build as well, espcially if we go the long game, then we can start looking for a Giant belt of Constitution as well as take feats

I know also a few feats that would work really well with this build
The first would obviously Defense Duelist, which allows us to add our Proficiency to our AC during an Attack, allowing us to avoid a melee attack, for a turn, so that we could disengage in the next, should the opponent be to much for us in the melee
The second would be resilent, which allows us to gain Proficiency in a saving roll, which obviously would be wisdom in this case, in order to increase our resistance from being charmed

Wouldn't we just take the ability score improvement? Our stats aren't great.

Yes they aren't great, but they aren't terrible either, they are just average

And because of this we have more to gain from feats in this case

Let me give you an example based on the feats I named

For Combat we would have a pure Dex improvement vs Defense Duelist,
The pure Dex improvement would give us +1 to all our melee attack rolls & our AC rises by 1 and thus make us slightly more diffcult to hit, however since level 4 where we gain the ASI, correspondecs with a rise in proficiency, means that were we to take defense Duellist we could use our reaction for the turn to gain +3 in our AC, albeit at the cost of using it for only one attack
But I think that is good trade off since we are a caster, whose only proficient in light armor in the first place and our stats are that great, as such engaging melee shouldn't be the to-go option for us either way, but rather a last resort kind of thing
Also, the feat isn't static, which means that each time we increase our proficiency it would grow stronger as well, unlike a pure stat improvement

The same can be said with Resilent, which is in fact even easier to compare

Sure a we could use a pure stat-improvement of 2 points and use one in Wisdom which would gain us a +1 in several important skills such as Insight, Perception etc. as well as the most important saving roll, namely the wisdom-saving roll
However, with Resilent, we would still gain a stat-improvement of 1 point in Wisdom, allowing us a +1 in these beforemention skills and still allow us to gain proficiency in Wisdom saving throws, which would in this case mean that we would gain at least a +4 on rolls and as defense duellist would scale with our level, which gives us much better odds Charm, which believe me, is a real pain in the ass

I think if we are ever actually being attacked, that's a lose condition right there. If we are going to be a bard, we are either going to find a party to join or die. And we're going to have better things to spend our reaction on.

When I talked about stat improvements, I was thinking of our charisma, given it will (or at least should) be the stat we use the most and our spellcasting stat. We'll gain an ability at level 6 that we can use to give us (and our party) advantage on saving throws against being charmed. If we manage to get into a party with a paladin, that will be an appreciable bonus to our wisdom save right there.
