You woke up to seeing Orochimaru curled up in the corner of your room, a large blanket wrapped around his body, his back against the wall, a kunai in his hand.
It had been like this for a few weeks now. Both you and Orochimaru were sleeping in the same room, armed with knives. The room he had been given by your parents was still in use by him, but every night, he gravitated towards you, to have some kind of security like he had during both your time on the road.
Of course, you were not innocent in those habits either. You were across the room, sitting against the wall as well, wrapped up into a blanket, a genjutsu cast over your room so that it looked like you were sleeping in your bed.
The kunai that rested under your pillow was still in your hand.
Both the beast and Aka were concerned that the journey had negatively affected you.
You just told them that you needed time to readjust to being back home, and not on the road, in constant danger from enemy nin, bandits and dangerous animals.
You needed to learn how to feel safe again.
It was harder to do than you thought.

You felt the invisible eyes watching you as you walked back to the Academy. Even hidden under genjutsu and cloaked in shadow, the feeling and paranoia was there. You remembered the feeling only a few times before, whenever the Hokage was present.
ANBU was watching you.
Maybe it was only one, maybe it was an entire team, but the eyes were on you.
Or maybe it was the paranoia getting to you… who knows.
But the eyes were keeping their distance, so you would allow them to stay, and you would not send the Beast to eat them.

The Academy instructor had bumped you and the rest of your friends in an older class, where the lessons were supposed to be harder, and the training more intense.
Every one of your friends agreed, and most of the time you all just started to practice your moms Jutsu and talk about what you were going to do after school.

Your mother's Jutsu, as it turns out, was very useful. While new radio's were still being imported and getting set up for operational use, teams still needed a way to communicate over short distances and when they were not in sight.
With the jutsu, as long as the chakra connection was not broken by an enemy dispelling the genjutsu, could work up to a mile away.
With the jutsu now in the academy curriculum, the Hokage agreed to pay your mother 100,000 Ryu for creating the jutsu, and that for the rest of her natural life, would be paid 10,000 Ryu for creating a jutsu that would help the village and the ninja within it.
Your mother had accepted the reward, only because she was going to have to stop doing missions soon so she could make sure your baby brother was going to be born in the village, and not in some muddy battlefield or a backwood, unsterile shack hundreds of miles away from home.
And you learned that your mother was pregnant and you were going to be an older sister.
You wanted to be shocked, but Aka and Beast were far more shocked then you were, as you fell asleep right after you heard the news.

Huh. Its hard to gauge whether or not this counted as a 'win' for Konoha. Its an inconvenient number of dead kids but not really too far out of bounds versus how many genin you lose within a few years of graduation. Konoha still seems weak but everyone else seems even weaker and will be both suffering attrition and will be losing money, since shinobi are the primary income sources and can't do missions when they are fighting.
And this has to be a really strong uniting factor for clans that normally are standoffish or hate each other. And it made Danzo look as useful as tits on a boar.
