A true hero... in training (Pokemon Gym Leader's apprentice quest)

[X] Challenge the man to a real one on one fight. Maybe betting money will make him accept.
-fool him, say you would bet all your money (they didn't know that you have a little)

Well, that's what we get for rushing into battle without any idea what awaits us. Fortunately, Gligar isn't all that strong.

[X] Release both your pokemon. Fight them on your own.
-[X] Rush Gligar: Distract with the threat of Maelstrom's Aqua Jet, hit with Fang's Ice Fang.
-[X] Be ready to redirect Malstrom to block their second pokemon.

Is that okay?

Guys, 1v1 actually favors us. Think
We release Maelstrom. He sees a Magikarp. Against a Gligar. He's not going to double up on us because to him its a certain win, because hah, look at that dumb kid with a magikarp.
Then Maelstrom hits the Ground type pokemon with an STAB Aqua Jet
I'd not be surprised if it goes down in one or two hits.

Fang by contrast is disadvantaged, he's better at teamwork, but Gligar are immune to Electric attacks, which leaves him with the off-type Ice Fang.
We don't want to add another pokemon to the mix from our opponents, we can beat Gilgar 1v1 then the next play they make we can deal with between our remaining options.

I mean, you aren't wrong actually, but we have no reason to believe that they'll take the bet. And even if they do, what's the probability of them honoring it? Especially with one more pokemon already in play in the lake.

I'll switch my vote if you can convince me on those, but I do think that overall starting strong is the safest bet.

But there's also the fact that Malestrom is a full rank lower in power to consider. We'd also have to be incredibly lucky, and expect them to keep their word in the bargain. On top of that is the fact that they have something running around that modifies memories and was released to go nuts in Valor Lake for some reason. And the girl's unknown mon. But... with a proper plan yeah I suppose that we might have a chance. Perhaps open up with Bounce, then merge into that into an Aqua Jet with Harden to improve the impact... okay, yeah I can get behind that plan.

You take your hand to your belt.
"You check your belt as you run."
You also quickly voice message
"quickly send a"
"You! Hey you, young man!" Said someone to you.
"someone said to you."
still juggling like if he didn't
"as if"
once you arrive to that corner,
"once you arrived at the corner"
"hoping"
until you arrive to the warehouses.
"arrive at the"
It's like a small version
Remove "It's" and open the sentence with "Like"
Two suspicious people looking at the lake.
"are looking"
They are dressed in uniforms and wear the same hairstyle and color.
"They're dressed in strange uniforms, wear the same hairstyle and even had the same eye color!"
I don't even KNOW how
Put the emphasis on how instead of know.
"Now he's gone"
And even if they don't, they are two.
"there's two of them."
The second person he catches
"That's the second person he's caught"
I can take of as many boys and men as it's necessary
"I can take on"

Also, lewd.

I want to point that money exchange with the ID's is automatic. Once a bet is declared and combat starts it's official. If the rules are broken then there is no money transfer at the end.

If the grunt wants your money he will play by the rules.

This plan seems well thought off. Let's see where this goes.

First of all, to the voters, there is a pretty important "if" here. They already said that they want to quickly escape to get away from the police. They aren't interested about money here. Edit: It's 14$. The criminal could maybe be distracted by laughing at Haru, but that's the merit here.

Second, to Luxicato, how does this work in practice? This seems like a hugely important setting detail. How does the breaking of rules get reported to the system that manages the money? If the trainer ID is involved, then surely criminals wont use this system?

Honestly, I'm not really sold on this whole "do a 1v1" thing for a couple of reasons.

First, it's that Fang probably has a better chance than Maelstrom at beating the Gligar, given that Fang is a full rank higher than Maelstrom and has an Ice type move.

Second, there's the possibility that the other grunt will just throw out another Pokemon after the 1v1, one that we might have need Maelstrom or Fang to beat, had they not been tired in a battle.

Third, this guy is a criminal. I do not want to give them some of our hard earned money if we lose.

Fourth, we probably have better odds in a double battle. We'd be able to focus in on type weaknesses of the opponents easier, and I highly doubt that two grunt-level criminals will be able to counter or pull the type of combos a Pokemon protagonist can.

Fifth, doing a 1v1 battle doesn't really feel appropriate, right now. Like, they're criminals wanting to silence a potential witness, hell yeah they're gonna bumrush us with two Pokemon at once! Like, why should these grunts, who are worried about being seen and arrested, give a damn about what kind of battle we want to have? I dunno, it just seems kind of weak to turn our first encounter with criminals, which by all rights should be a desperate thing as they fight to silence a witness, into "LETS HAVE A POKEMON BATTLE GAIZ!!!!"

Anyway, that's just my take on it.

Jusr a note since you guys might have forgot. Fang is male and has rivalry, so he'll be doing less damage on gligar since its female.

Honestly, having the grunt wait until after the battle to throw out her pokemon seems awefully optimistic. Given how annoyed she seems already I'd expect her to backstab us with her pokemon the moment we stop paying attention to her to focus on the other battle.

At the very least we should have Fang out to keep an eye on her while doing the 1v1.

I don't think that's how it works for the quest? If you look at Fang's character sheet it describes Rivalry to work by perceived power and not by gender. Meaning that given the type advantage, it should actually work in Fang's favour for the battle.

Yep, that's why I want to make it 2v2 from the start

Oh yeah, I was effectively agreeing with you by pointing out that it's even worse than you stated.

Throwing out another point against the current 1v1 plan, I'm not sure if Maelstrom really is such a good idea against the Gilgar. Given that she has Bully and Quick Attack, it looks like playing the "opponents underestimates Magikarp" card is just asking to give the Gilgar a super effective first strike. And seeing how Fang's ice move would be almost as much of a surprise as Maelstrom's Aqua Jet, we don't even gain all that much from it.

Just putting up the current tallies, with the add-ons separated.
