So ... I can empathize with this, but neither you nor @Megaolix voted to leave the kitchen after Kitchen Checkup - an update that included several blatant hints that Wendi was not exactly comfortable with Flan's presence - which would have completely avoided the breakdown. In your specific phrasing: the traumabomb would not have been launched. As far as 'winning friends' goes ... Nove is a hard case - even in canon, several months after the JS incident she is still completely avoiding Subaru despite talking with Ginga and some of the other visitors. Much like Vita, she takes actual work to befriend, not that I expect attempts to be made to befriend her specifically, anyway.

I'd also disagree with their characterization as 'little cyborg girls.' Cinque definitely has blood on her hands (Zest and his group), and both Wendi and Nove have gone into fights being completely willing to kill their opponents (including an actual little girl in the form of Caro). You can argue circumstances and change of heart, but I think your characterization is off.

As far as it being a 'punishment arc' ... well, it's also time to bond with Satsuki, which is more of what you should be doing (and are doing, so no real worries). And then there's the choice of whether Flan wants to try opening up to groups by helping teach or if she just wants to coast by doing missions.
You kind of made my point for me, here. Wendi wasn't comfortable. By the time we were given THAT choice, NOTHING we were going to do, save for leave, was going to improve the situation. When you want to score points, and your choices are (just as an abstract example) 0, -1, -5, and -100 . . . yeah.

And I stand by my 'little cyborg girls' comment because outside of dutifully doing Scaglietti's missions as they were raised to, the Numbers are more or less innocent. Yes, they committed crimes. Yes, they have blood on their hands . . . but the younger ones, the ones actually viable for rehabilitation? They are still, to some degree, children. I wasn't excusing their behavior or ignoring their blatant hypocrisy or anything.

It's a shitty situation and no one really stands to win anything for it. Flan could teach Sacchin anywhere; that's irrelevant to the main thrust of the conflict so far.

There's just a general feeling of impotence, and a dread that nothing we do will make anything better. Delay a disaster, sure - maybe even avoid a disaster. But that doesn't solve the obvious problem.

Kill 'em all. Let God sort 'em out.

No seriously though; Flan isn't someone who wants to or needs to solve other people's problems (outside of her own interests, of course). The problem isn't, I think, one that needs to be solved as an objective. The tension is there to be tension and something that might or might not work out, depending on how things go. Some folks, you just can't get through to in spite of your best intentions. if Wendi's one of those people, then we and Flan know that now and can put effort towards relating to folks who ARE worth the time and the effort.

I speak from the player perspective alone; the interpersonal conflict is a problem we are presented with.

Flan, however . . . I didn't even really grok why she raged out so hard at Wendi. I mean, It's one thing when many of our options are socially bad, it's another thing altogether to be reminded that we are always nearly a mere hair's breadth away from a bit o' the old ultraviolence. And I don't say that as a negative about the quest as a whole; I say that only from the perspective of a 'let's get along with people' style voter.

Part of the charm of this quest is the ever-present option to say "fuck it" and murder anyone who annoys us too much. However, as we try to grow as a person, that option (however cathartic) is still 'losing' the challenge we set before ourselves.

In the mindset of trying to 'win,' this arc is . . . frustrating. We have very few options to grow as a person outside of 'grin and bear it, grin and bear it,' etc. Amusing ourselves and training our ward are separate from our social escapades. I'm not critiquing the presentation or characterization of anyone involved, even. Everything is feasible, suspension of disbelief is firmly in place. It's solid writing all around.

Just, it's been feeling like the rewards for each non-losing choice . . .are similar non-losing choices. And that's a perfectly legitimate scenario for real people in real life, etc.

Just, you know, I read quests to get away from that kind of endless shit IRL, is all. :D

Let's move this along~

Flan has vastly improved. We've gone from simply automatically mutilating her on provocation(see first PMMM run) to a variety of eventual but inevitable bloody rampages(see first Nanoha run) to now, being able to walk away successfully to vent on ONE tree

She has. Now we are usually two to three votes away from slaughter at any given juncture, as opposed to -1 or zero.

Of course we just burned ourselves down to zero, and walked away to vent, so there's that.

Yes, Wendi wasn't comfortable ... and she is the one who entered a space Flan was in. Flan isn't under an obligation to pack up what she was doing and leave just because one of the Numbers walks in on her, and when Flan asked her if she was uncomfortable, Wendi said she was fine. Wendi was obviously not fine ... but that's not on Flan. If points are being lost there, it's not because of something Flan did, it's because of Wendi's own actions. Granted, there wasn't a default action to "score points," but if people had voted to leave along with something like a sub-vote where Flan reminds Wendi that she did say that she would try to keep out of their way you absolutely would have gone 'points positive.'

As far as the Numbers go ... they're all actually 'viable' for rehab. It's just that most of the older ones (and Sette, one of the youngest) decided to stay with Jail. Whether out of filial loyalty, belief that he was right, or something else, they decided to not try for rehab. It's clearest with Cinque, as she's actually the fourth-oldest of the Numbers, activated before Quattro was. Cinque actually does explain why she went for rehab - she wants freedom, to genuinely atone for what she's done, and to watch over her younger sisters. She also implies that even Jail could have had some kind of rehab. Dieci, too, is one of the older Numbers (activated around the same time as Sein, I believe). Are they, at least to some degree, innocent? Yes; they were raised by Jail to be, at least in part, weapons, and IIRC Nove explicitly refers to herself as a weapon to be used at least once. So there is a great deal of nurture involved. But they aren't wholly naïve, either.

Man, this talk is starting to inflate more than it should. Let some time pass and see if Wendi calm down enough to apologize, okay? Or see if Ginga realize what happened and intervene about it.

[X] Take a nap until it's time to start making the food.

I'm not getting better ideas, so...

If you're not enjoying the way the quest is going. You can always, you know, leave. Right?
Or instead of giving up like that, I can toss an opinion into the thread in an attempt to influence something towards a more enjoyable result. I didn't mean to violate your safe space.

We try things. Sometimes they even work.

But that's enough out of me about this. At this point it's obvious that opening my mouth here was not constructive.

;)

More like you got pissy about things not going your way. Then being an abrasive ass about it.

Edit: I'm personally kind of miffed at Wendi, myself. She's acting as though Flan specifically sought she and her sisters out to make their lives miserable. I seem to recall that every encounter she had with the Combat Cyborgs involved them trying to kill her. Basing her interactions off the result of that kind of antagonism without ever actually speaking with someone is just selfish and hypocritical, especially given the program she's in and relative amount of amnesty she's received.
Not ... really? I mean, to some degree, yes, but:

* In Catching a Fairy, Flan initiated the contact by catching Agito and trying to escape. The first person to respond is Tre, and while she definitely makes an attack, qualifying it as 'with lethal intent' is impossible. Not to mention that Flan wrecked Tre's arm and so qualified her badass credentials and let the Numbers go full-force (if the engagement had lasted longer, anyway).

* In Kidnapping Attempt and the following updates, the Numbers are initially non-hostile, and it's again only after Flan cripples Nove that they start actually fighting (although, given the speed with which Wendi and Cinque attacked, it's certainly arguable that it was a planned maneuver).

* And, of course, in A Game of Tag, Flandre just sort of sends Wendi straight through several trees and then chucks her away without Wendi even getting to do anything.

Or to phrase it another way: Flandre's long and storied history with them consists of her being childish, the cyborg's responding poorly, and Flandre responding in her own personal style.
Said style being, of course, psychotic games of violence and destruction with little room to hope for survival, let alone fight back.
I think their reactions have been more than fair, though they could stand to be more honest about it.

In the mindset of trying to 'win,' this arc is . . . frustrating.
If you don't mind, could you explain more about 'winning' this arc and what you think it entails? (Or should entail.) I ask because ... well, Flan has some goals, but nothing really solidly connected to just this arc - there aren't concrete objectives in place to aim for. And based on what I know of what's going on in this arc (spoiler: Not all that much, really :p ) ... I really can't think of a 'win condition.' There are ways to lose, I suppose - somehow getting Satsuki or Lutecia killed, for example, or doing something to make Lutecia not be friends with Flan anymore - but I'm drawing a blank on winning.

So ... I mean, you've said you're unhappy about the arc, you've tied it to 'winning' the arc, and you've said you spoke up to get a more enjoyable result. I can infer from some of your statements that you'd like to get along better with the Numbers, but that's a troubled road just because of history and personality conflicts, and I'm not sure if you're adding them to the 'win counter' because they're a current focus point or because it's something you are really rooting for.

Why not made the winning condition "get Lutecia (and her mom possibly) to visit Gensokyo?" Simple and easy goal, somewhat childish but it would suit Flandre well ...
... Kind of already done?
"… Hey, Lutecia, Megane?" They give you almost identical questioning looks at your change in tone. "Um, so I'm only going to be here for a few months before I go back home. I don't know if I'll come back to help the Bureau or anything, but, um … well, there's kind of going to be a party after I get back, and then I was … um …." You pause and shake yourself - why is it hard to ask them this? … Because you don't want them to say they can't come …? You take a breath. "Anyway, I want to invite you - both of you, and Agito and Zest, too - to come to the party, and then, if you want, to see a bit more of Gensokyo." Lutecia smiles happily and starts to respond, but looks up at her mother before saying anything. Megane smiles gently.

"If we can arrange it with the Bureau, we'd love to go, Flandre. I'm sure Zest would enjoy going back as well. Were you going to invite anyone else?" You tap your fingers together.

The problem comes of the expectation that there must be something to win.
But I expect that this is mostly just busywork to wind things down, and while there will be exciting things happening, I shouldn't think there's a hard goal we can set beyond 'survive.'

... Actually, wait. Flandre had a couple minions the last time we were here. A short term goal should be to gather some of them back? I recall they made Flandre quite happy to have.

Minions that were drugged up bad by Flandre not exactly controlling well the effect she had.

As for myself, one goal I want to accomplish is for Flandre to manage to become good friends with at least one of the Numbers.

That might be problematic. Most/all of the troops we were stationed with ended up slightly mad/traumatised when Flandre left. The TSAB probably will try to keep us away to avoid relapsing or making things worse.
We could try asking, but I suspect the answer will be 'no'.

Before the Party
[X] Take a nap until it's time to start making the food.

Humming to yourself, you skip happily to your room. The piano will be fixed properly and soon, and tonight you'll be cooking - earlier than tonight, even. Tonight is Fate's little party, and you have to get food ready for it, so it's a good thing you're in a good mood. You giggle and flop into your coffin, but leave it open. True, it's bright out, even with the curtains closed, but you're amenable to interruptions that aren't stupid, and if someone needs to get to you in a hurry it's probably better if you don't accidentally smash their face in with the coffin's lid. It doesn't usually go over well ….

You wake up with good cheer unabated, and the first thing you do is take advantage of the coffin's blood supply. Among other things, you'll have to talk with Fate about getting a local supply … but that can wait. Sated for the moment, you spring out of the coffin and bounce out of the room, still humming to yourself as you make your way down to the kitchen. The dining area has been rearranged, with several rectangular tables with spots designated for the different foods, and the round dining tables removed. There aren't tables in here … are people supposed to carry their food with them? Hopefully that isn't the case. Shaking your head at the poor manners on display, you head into the kitchen and then the food storage area. All the supplies you requested are in their places, and there are even a few extra kinds of drinks, although nothing that looks particularly good … certainly not the 'bulk-production' tea set. You shudder and shake your head.

Well, you can fill in that river when you get to the bridge. Right now you have food to start preparing, so your clones slip out and you get to work. Most of it wouldn't even take that long even if you were doing it by yourself without help. As it is, you take your time, making sure that everything is perfect, all the little touches that say 'the cook poured her heart into this creation.' It's not true, of course, and most people don't appreciate that much effort, but they will be able to tell that more effort than normal has gone into the food ….

Some time later, as you're winding down and most of the 'cooking' has changed to 'make sure things don't catch fire,' the swell of voices catches your ear. "- look, I can get the door so -" A man's voice trails off with a sigh as the door swings open. You raise an eyebrow at Cinque as she pushes the door in and holds it open for whoever is following her. No longer wearing her white prisoner uniform, she's now dressed in a light green sundress. She has to see you, but she doesn't focus on you at all, instead turning back toward the entrance as an older man in the brown uniform walks in empty-handed, followed by Admiral Harlaown carrying a rather large, flat box. The man frowns and stares at your clones as you bow politely.

"Now, now, Genya - we've got to keep you fresh, so when your daughter sees you she doesn't think we're overworking you! Ah, Flandre - where should I put this?" You step away from the oven and fly over to her so you can look down into the box - a rectangular cake sits inside.

"If it needs to be kept cool, back in here." You guide her into the storage area and hold open a cooler for her.

"Thank you. Besides, Genya, I outrank you, so if I tell you to take it easy, you have to listen. Right?" She winks at him and he sighs and shakes his head. You skip around her and look up at the man.

"I'm sorry, have we met before? I don't remember your name, but you look kind of familiar." He grunts softly and nods.

"Ah, yes. We met briefly at the hospital, when you defeated the vampire. I am Major Genya Nakajima." You nod and step back to half-bow politely; with a place to work from, you can recall him speaking to you once. And, of course, the name isn't exactly subtle, either.

"A pleasure to meet you properly, Major. Ginga has been quite helpful -" You frown and break off as more voices approach. Cinque is already looking out the door, too.

"You just got out of the hospital, Fate! I can't let you work yourself too hard." The wolf-youkai - Fate's familiar.

"I'm fine, Alph. And I'm not asking to carry everything." They finally step into view and you see that the full-size familiar is carrying several large boxes. Fate looks around curiously as her mother quickly hurries out to meet her.

"Fate! You're here already!" She practically crashes into the younger woman and immediately steers her away from the kitchen. Alph glances back toward you, frowning, but follows the mages. "Have you picked out a room yet? I know, you can have the biggest, most comfortable room in the building!"

"M-Mother! What would I do with all that space …?" Genya sighs, relieved - right, Fate wasn't supposed to know about this party. Somehow.

"Who all is going to be coming, anyway? Hayate is coming, I heard …." You glance at Cinque, but she doesn't look like she knows for sure, either, and Genya nods.

"Hayate and Nanoha will both be here, fortunately. So will Erio and Caro and a few other RF6 staff workers. Some of her colleagues from work. Unfortunately, Teana and Subaru are working tonight, so they can't be here, and neither can Signum. All told, we managed to get about thirty people who could say they'd definitely be here, and a few more who would try to make it." He glances at Cinque. "Will you and your sisters be alright with that many people here?" She hesitates before nodding firmly.

"Yes. Wendi's making sure Nove gets changed, but we'll be fine. If you're sure you want us to be present." The major snorts.

"Of course we do. I know it will mean a lot to Ginga, especially." Cinque bows her head and Genya looks at you. "And you will, too, right?" Your mouth twists unhappily and you cross your wings in front of you. Most of these people probably know who you are already, so Patchouli's mask isn't going to work, and this is supposed to be for Fate … on the other hand, you could make Satsuki come down in her uniform without telling her about everything that's going on.

"Maybe a little. I don't know that I'll mingle, much, but I'll say hi, if nothing else. And there are probably a few people I could talk to about something." Hayate and Fate among them. For some reason, that seems to relieve him, as he relaxes and smiles.

As the afternoon progresses and evening starts falling, you keep an invisible clone on lookout duty to keep watch for people you know. Hayate and Nanoha, of course, neither in uniform. Shari. Interestingly, the Church makes an appearance - Schach, Verossa, and the leader all arrive together, and if Schach isn't obviously armed, it's not like Devices are intrusive objects. And your job is pretty much done, although you keep your clones in the kitchen to keep everything stocked. Now you just have to decide what you are going to do ….

What do you do?

[ ] Just make an appearance, congratulate Fate on her recovery, then bow out and let the humans have their party without your interference.

[ ] Talk to Fate.
- [ ] Ask to see if you can work as a training instructor.
- [ ] Ask to get started on missions soon.

[ ] Talk to Hayate.
- [ ] Ask her see if she can get Vita to come to Gensokyo.

[ ] Find a comfortable spot that's out of the way and try to not be the most amazing person in the room.

[ ] Other?

DM Note: Despite Flan's thoughts earlier, unless you Write-In something specific, she is going to tell Satsuki about the party and leave clothing choice to her.

[x] Talk to Hayate
-[x] Ask her see if she can get Vita to come to Gensokyo.

I like the idea of not doing business things. We can bother Fate about things later, but this is a party.
