By this argument, we should destroy all xenotech we come across.
Because we have no idea of knowing what longterm effects they can have.
They tried to blow up the fusion reactor of their space station. With themselves inside.
At no point in time have indoctrinated EVER attempted to commit suicide in canon.
Or to attempt to remove the indoctrination/mind control focus away from others.
Remember, they are weapons and infiltrators.

Hostile actors already have access to suitcase nukes, bioweapons and starships as improvised kinetic kill vehicles. And they all exist now, and will exist unless we literally burn the galaxy to cinders.
There are much easier ways to cause mayhem than to attempt to steal xenotech and use it to induce insurrection; that's Bond villain level of dumbness.
And if we're so bloody incompetent as to miss the removal of a xenotech artifact from a highsecurity research facility and into a military base?

It may be a different protocol. One that is specifically geared towards avoidance and denyial of resources and information's on the subject as without reaper support they may be operating in a vacuum, thus have very good chances to be detected, defeated and solutions be they technical or doctrinal could be developed to deal with them and thus massively deny their activity during she the reapers do hit, thus the need probably for the scout reaper to switch them over from dormant to active.
As for weapon usage it does provide a more subtle weapon than those depending on targets. Target leaders of enemies and watch them and parts of their staff go lala due to a ''art exhibit" is kind if subtle and harder to ascribe to enemy action without prior knowledge. Thus theft plus elimination of others aware of it renders enemy action into tragic disaster for a major covert ops that may bring a major competitor to its knees.
Useful in the right circumstance.
We could however build the equivalent of a castle brian on top of it if we do not want anyone getting it. Downside off course is that they are on top of a mind control artifact, so construction would have to surround its suspected maximum active radius.
Still, a good facility for ground troops and a way to consider fighting in the heavy defensive terrain of the Rachni. Build a few more such facilities on Virmire to serve both training fields and defensive strongpoints, and on a few other worlds too for multiple types of environment and best coverage, and it sounds like a good scheme to me.
With all this in mind I think a modified super limited option that instead of throwing it in the sun goes for put it on ice and retry the same when we have different capabilities would be best.
