IRL, it has been found that the same people willing to do mass unethical experiments are also completely unsuited to do science. The results are basically worthless, as the goal of the experiments is not to find out the truth, but to confirm the strong ideology that motivates and justifies the experiments.

Nods. Indeed most of it was absolute bull shit.

However, some of it was useful, specifically the trauma data. We know as much as we do about things like hypothermia and low pressure environments interact with the human body because of those unethical experiments.

With good reason the results gotten at Dachau are still the best we have in these areas and are still used today as nobody in the modern day would want to agree to an experiment where their ear drums ruptured by low pressure.

While most of this stuff is likely useless if their experiments did produce data on how Salarians react under say...extreme radiation sickness, the example shown in the update, and we can use that to model how best to treat them. Its not much compared to how they got it, but I'd rather that then delete make their suffering completely worthless.

[X] Accept her offer. Whether or not you can trust what she says, she's left you a lot of room. If you can reduce the number of potential combatants, and perhaps even avoid a fight entirely, you will.

Well then, it looks like we get to enforce all of our negotiation demands.

Should we hang the daletrass we have in our custody because she has obviously committed heanous crimes against her own people.

[x] Refuse her offer. You are not acceding to restrictions on your actions when going into your army's first ground invasion. She can surrender in person to the soldiers who find her, just like everybody else.

Disturbing.

It is impolite to refuse a (nearly) unconditional surrender. And truly I don't want to kill any of them. I just want to dismantle their train wreck of a civilisation so it stops being a dagger at our back.

An occupation will be significantly easier if we have a cooperative Lystheni leader on our end - there will be far less resistance if we've got a local who is nominally on our side. Even if this is just a blatant power grab on her part and her motivations are less than noble, that's still something we can work with. After all, this woman at least seems sane. Sanity means that she can probably accept being the leader of a client state, and not perform all sorts of insane actions against the power that has clearly proven itself vastly superior.

I'm torn. The Dalatrass sister might be our Nuri Al-Maliki and utterly fuck up the internal stability of the Lystheni for decades to come, but on the other hand we have absolutely no other collaborators in positions of power we could install in the place of the Dalatrass. We don't even know who the Lystheni might consider a person in position of power because their society is so damnably opaque. So i guess we'll just have to roll with it; having a local that can take over the reigns of their state is a hundred times better than not having one. Trying to put a Governor in charge of them when we are utterly in the dark about how their society works is a recipe for disaster, and so is just installing a random Lystheni that we find during our invasion.

So, one thought here given we've got more information on the situation now and we seem to be pretty heavily in favor of accepting surrender. While it wasn't in our last offer, we were potentially willing to give this as a possible concession:

-[] Concessions
--[] Economic support of Lystheni interests, working towards a common understanding and cooperation (basically civilian Marshall Plan by Virmirean companies).

Now that we know that insane, unethical experiments were being conducted on almost the entire population I think we can use the support of the Dalatrass's sister in order to play up us being liberators against the oppression of a mad tyrant. By helping their local economy grow and raise up their standard of living, we make the contrast between the new regime and the old one all the more apparent. It'll also play well at home and abroad that we are treating our client state so well.

That said, on the front of our demands this one is no longer viable:

--[] Full Lystheni commitment to the Rachni War effort (all Lystheni military assets placed under your command).

At this point we've destroyed most of their military assets, and we can't let them have a military for at least a generation or two now that it's come to us having to conquer them. So help with the Rachni war in this fashion is a no go, but that's hardly a big loss all things considered. Instead they can either devote the resources they'd have expended into building and maintaining their navy into developing their civilian infrastructure, or we could have them paying Virmire some amount of money every year in exchange for our protection and we'll nominally be using that to fund our own military.

no interest in killing ppl that do not need to die.

I also wonder what this is going to do to our popularity?

I mean if we release the info we just got on their experiments I can't see anyone really complaining about us doing this...and you know...the dalatrass being dumb...

As for long-term solutions?
Taramnal is a viable colonisation prospect, which already has infrastructure to support 10kk people. It shouldn't be too hard to expand from there - while it's longer flight than Assillia, most everything we could get on world, only complex stuff like electronics would need to be shipped.

We both prop up Taramnal's economy by providing markets for their industries, offset pressure of population on Virmire and make further troubles with Lystheni extremely unlikely, for:
1) Their economy would be tightly bound to Virmire
2) They wouldn't be able to control their own metropoly, let alone hope to match Virmire's Navy.

With the ultimate goal of including Lystheni into Virmire as internally autonomous (to a point) Taramnal-bound entity, and eventually fully assimilating them.

Depending on how things go i wouldn't have a problem with allowing them to have a navy in under decade. We might even support them building one. After all, letting Germany build the Bundeswehr and Japan the JSDF worked out pretty well for the USA.

This of course depends on them actually de-Lysthenifying themselves and turning into a sane and economically dependent republic after the Virmirean model...

Hey just thought of a write in to the accept bit what do you think of this?

-[] ask if she know what hell did they find in the ruins of SO 4 which made the dalatrass think performing those experiments was required.

Sure, if things go very well I could see that. But it should also be considered that they don't necessarily need a military of their own just yet - even a small anti-piracy force wouldn't really help them much. Unless we find someone else living out here in Sentry Omega, then they're not at all under threat except from the Rachni, and the Rachni would have to get through us anyways.

The sub-vote isn't necessary - Mira should be asking for that kind of information anyways.

West Germany was a fascist state in 1945 but became a democracy in only a few decades. with the shorter Lystheni livespawn we can probably turn their planet around faster but we have to stay long enough to take over their schools and for the those graduates to take over the bureaucracy.
