While this is true, only the Lieutenants are Dao-Cleaving. That implies a single digit number of them. She's still in a bad position as there are probably several Soul Chrysalis level cultivators around who could challenge Suizhen despite their weakened foundations by being a full half stage higher than her, and Xiaoling can't fight them at all, but we'll probably be taking the Dao-Cleaving ones ourself, if it comes to a fight.
NEGAVERSE: XIANXIA TSUNDERE CHAPTER 1: SINKING INTO TRASH
Ming Xiaoling greeted him outside the steps of Deplian's largest hotel, a middling fifty-story affair built into the foundations of an old Diagram fortress. She had, of course, rented the entire thing.
"Unloved child!" She shrieked gleefully, gathering up her skirts and rushing down to embrace him. "It's been far too long."
"Spoiled brat," Yong said, returning her hug affectionately. "And how are you? Not suffering too terribly, I hope."
He had put on a tremendous amount of muscle, she noted, and was wearing some sort of powerful artifact in the form of a shining ring. A gift from his infamous father, the feared Vermin Lord of Yong? None of that concerned her so much as the girl that was trailing along behind him however. What was her husband-to-be playing at?
"I'm put out," she replied to his inquiry, doe-like eyes flashing. "Not only were you late, forcing me to subsist within this hovel, but now I see you've picked up a stray! Why didn't you mention her in your letter?"
"She's my bodyguard," he replied, amused. "The genius, if you recall. Suizhen broke through into Soul Chrysalis last month, a day before her fifteenth birthday."
"Ah," Xiaoling sniffed disdainfully. "It's good she's blessed with something. The girl is rather plain."
"I find her eyes very striking," he teased, turning and waving to Suizhen.
Xiaoling, if one were to be frank, was a heart-stopping beauty, even among the noble ladies of the Ming Court. Her light brown hair, pale green eyes, and near-translucent skin made her partial elven heritage very clear; that heritage, in conjunction with her intimidating looks and ferocious personality, had driven away most of the would-be allies and admirers in their peer group. It was a state of affairs that suited her fairly well after the disasters of childhood.
The point is, Ming Xiaoling was second to no one. Yong was accorded a great deal more leeway than most men, but that comment was pushing it. Or was something more going on?
Then she saw it and narrowed her own green eyes at the girl's fathomless blue. "Eyes of Kong. And of that purity grade... I recognize her. She's from the Sui family branch, isn't she? I thought Zang Kong had exterminated them for treason."
It was rather like Nameless, to risk the anger of a Titan. Her skin crawled at the thought, but Yong seemed not in the least bit worried. "It was some kind of experiment, from what I've gathered." He looked intrigued at the thought. "But yes, treason against one's Marquis was the official story. Suizhen wasn't implicated, her parents were."
Thankfully, the girl's fate didn't seem to bother Yong much. He spoke up again. "Enough about her! What about me? And more importantly - the presents you've surely bought for me. Let's get to it! Emperor knows I only put up with you for your money..."
"Oh, that reminds me!" Xiaoling squealed, slapping a hand against his torso. "I found a new palanquin that's absolutely divine! You simply must see it, I've had an exhibition built on the 37th floor. You'll never guess where I dredged this up..."
Nameless beckoned Suizhen over and headed into the hotel-fortress with her. It was nice to show off a bit!
---
"...And you must be the bodyguard!" Xiaoling said sweetly, but cautiously as she considered her target. It was some hours into the tour, and the first time she'd acknowledged Suizhen's existence. Much as she'd like to ignore it though, the girl's cultivation skill merited some wariness.
Somewhat taken aback at Ming finally addressing her, Suizhen merely nodded.
"What a delightful outfit," Xiaoling continued, stalking a semi-circle around her newest victim. "It looks so... practical."
"Thanks!" Suizhen perked up. "I really like it. Yours is beautiful too, but how do you fight in heels?"
"Oh, you poor thing," Xiaoling shook her head consolingly. "That's what a change of outfits is for. I suppose you mustn't have had much opportunity for that. Don't worry, we must all play to our strengths... your case is simply more literal than others'."
"Um..." Suizhen faltered, somewhat confused. "I, I guess? I mean, I'm happy to be strong?"
"Of course you are, dear, it's not like he hired you for the conversation," Xiaoling dismissed, turning back to Nameless.
"You know she's going to be carrying our luggage," Nameless pointed out.
"All the more important that she be strong," Xiaoling replied airily. "And now, Unloved Child: I have been an absolutely wonderful hostess to you, catered to your every want, anticipated your every need-"
He nodded. "Yes, everything has been perfect despite our being forced to live in a hovel. Good job!" He gave her a cheesy thumbs-up.
Xiaoling rolled her eyes. "I'm adrift in the winds of your flattery. But have you really not gotten anything for me?" She pouted beseechingly.
He thought for a moment, then indicated himself with a flourish. "Ta-da! It's me, your only friend!"
She sniffled. "You wound me so deeply..."
"I'm my father's son," he admitted. "Scum of the earth, the worst dregs of Yong."
"Absolutely heartless," she accused.
"The Mountain's Refuse, they call us. To press against us is to sink into trash."
Xiaoling snorted and he pulled her into a hug. "The truth is," he whispered, "I did get you something. But it's so much better than the crap you've gotten me that I haven't felt like bringing it out. A giant gold-plated Diagram, really? So, if you want to see it, you'll have to do me a favor."
"You didn't like the Diagram?" She whispered concernedly.
"I love the Diagram," he reassured, "but it's still nowhere near as spectacular as my gift. Therefore I'll need that favor."
"Well," she said with mock umbrage, "my wish is your command, then."
"Be nicer to Suizhen."
"You ask too much."
"I didn't say to be nice. Just... a medium amount nicer. Can you do that? For me?"
"Begging for mercy on her behalf?"
"That's right."
"Hmph. I suppose if it's a request from my... only friend," she said haughtily, "then in... desperation not to lose your friendship, I must accede."
"Just as planned," he said smugly. She swatted him on the arm.
"Ow!" Xiaoling looked at her hand. "You monstrous beast, you've hurt me. Did you complete that flesh-reinforcing Diagram you were dreaming about?"
"I learned to Cultivate," he said. "And, I discovered a stage between Ego Barrier and Organ Refining. Diagram Mages can access it."
"You what?"
"Don't worry, half-elves can access it too."
---
A/N: So yes, selecting Childhood Friend and choosing SLEAZY SCIENCE BOI has paid off early on. You don't want to know what I rolled for this guy's starting stats, but playing along with his dungeon raiding ideas has netted you a sort of super-breakthrough process worth a cool extra .25 cultivation levels that stacks with everything else along with some special effects. By the by, Diagram Mages aren't supposed to be able to learn to cultivate but he's doing it anyway.
He also offers a lot of cultivation multipliers via Diagram Magic. The bullshit is strong with this one.
TenaciousMe said:
What's that kids? 'Nerdboi won't be much help in a fight.' Well, it seems that the creepy rat kid is already paying off big time- he actually kicks ass, brought his own bodyguard, and is offering powerups already!
What's with the title? 'Sinking into trash?' Geeze, QM is pulling no punches with how sleazy this guy is. He wasn't exactly grateful for all the stuff Xiaoling got him either...
To be fair, some kind of super-secret cultivation breakthrough is the kind of thing that money literally cannot buy. And his ingratitude may have been kind of sarcastic. I've mixed feelings on Kong, but she actually seems okay so far even if our tsundere is giving her the business.
I say give her hell Xiaoling! A Tsundere has gotta do what a Tsundere has gotta do. Childhood Rat Friend seems to be worth the points spent so far. Let's hope he lives up to the early hype. We're going to need a big push to get strong enough that we can actually push peace with the elves as a political option.
Well, at the very least, seizing a Priceless Treasure likely made this whole business worthwhile, depending on what it turned out to be. At the very least, it'll be a potent point of leverage in our negotiations.
The average Treasures might also be useful too. And at least we've made good on our income!
So yeah, looks like the dice smiled on our choice of actions this time from what I can tell so far. I'm curious to see what that 94'll actually get us, and if the doubles before those have any interesting effects.
(Pretty sure though that a 94 on a d100 when the chance of a Priceless Treasure was described as "Small" as opposed to "Tiny" or "Very Small" will get us something good)
Alright, it looks like [X] Direct Investigation with [X] Scam and [X] Free Mastermind Point Expenditure have won. You are now free of Mastermind Point debt.
You manage to scam the local Cultivators with a mix of illusions and good old fashioned con artistry. While the funds accrued aren't enormous, you have enough wealth enough to comport yourself with dignity for the next couple of months, and have also undermined the less virtuous sects in the area by a substantial margin. With much of the Bleak Ravens leadership out of town, you weren't able to efficiently target them while in Deplian, but did manage to gather some additional information.
In addition, you have acquired a modest supply of Cultivation materials appropriate for those under the Dao Cleaving stage, as well as a Pearl of Fathomless Blue. These concentrations of purified spirit essence are found in certain well-developed beasts of the Kong jungles. Such beasts very rarely venture outside the Deep Overgrowth, filled with monstrosities of the Reality Forming and Grand Solipsism-equivalent stages. It is believed that creatures who form such Pearls act as a sort of continent-spanning refinement factory for Zang Kong and his underlings. The neutrally aspected essence within this Pearl is as close to the Energy of All and Nothingness as can be manifested in discrete form.
This particular Pearl is especially large and lustrous and would provide noticable Cultivation gains for even an expert of the Reality Forming stage. It can be used inefficiently towards the advancement of lower stages as well: a full quarter-stage for Dao Cleaving, a full half-stage for Soul Chrysalis, and a full Stage (including breakthrough) for those of lower Cultivation.
Since the Pearl is a treasure that may be ingested for immediate power, you may choose how it is employed:
[ ] Save It - Hold off on using the Pearl; while these concentrated energy sources have been used regularly by Cultivators throughout the Empire with no side effects, one can never be entirely certain that they are utterly free of Zang Kong's influence. Even Suizhen doesn't seem worried, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't be. Better to trade or sell it as a bargaining chip for later. Or maybe you'll decide to consume it when it would be more efficient to do so. Time burns, however. Power now may well mean more power later.
*As tangible Cultivation progress in neutrally-aspected and transportable form, the Pearl is a highly versatile bargaining chip
*Could save you theoretical objective months of Cultivation if applied later
*Why take the risk, even a minuscule one, of ingestion and possible compromise? Best just not to worry about it.
[ ] Consume Personally - A full half-stage would be very relevant to your combat abilities at this juncture, and you need all the power you can get going into the negotiation with the Bleak Ravens. The first half of any Cultivation stage always proceeds faster than the latter, but even saving a month or two of objective time will have made your scamming efforts worthwhile.
*Stage improved to Mid Soul Chrysalis, 3.5.
*Combat Strength improved to High Dao Cleaving, 4.75, plus x6 Time Dilation
*You could instead forge a half-strength Artifact that would be roughly at the peak of Reality Forming if so desired
*Forging is fast due to your Grand Diagram of Fate
[ ] Give to Xiaoling - Xiaoling is currently the weakest member of your party and requires the most defense. It makes sense to strengthen the weakest link, as you are not willing to lose any party members. Xiaoling naturally cultivates slower; rocketing her immediately to the peak of Organ Refining will increase her power substantially and help her keep up in the future. [Xiaoling Loyalty+]
*Benefits you give Lieutenants are factored independently of their Lieutenant buff (the buff itself can only ensure they remain no more than a full stage below you in combat power given enough time for Fate to act; if you grow slower their power level will be closer to yours).
*Xiaoling will take seriously your request to be nicer to Suizhen, and fully apply herself to restraining her competitive impulses around your bodyguard.
[ ] Give to Suizhen - Suizhen is already in early Soul Chrysalis, boosting her to Mid-Soul Chrysalis would help short-circuit her feelings of inadequacy and give her more latitude as an independent operator. In addition, Pearls of Fathomless Blue are said to help awaken the similarly neutral-aspected Eyes of Kong to their innate abilities. Who knows what benefits she might derive from a locus of energy engineered by and for her bloodline? [Suizhen Loyalty+]
*Xiaoling is still happy about the Absolute Ego Barrier you helped her implement and will not overmuch resent Suizhen for your favoring her in this, but you would be wise not to make a pattern of it. Xiaoling actually helps in scams, after all, while Suizhen cannot be trusted to play more than a bit part
*Possibility of Suizhen awakening more of her unique powers from the Eyes of Kong.
*Suizhen seems confident that there is nothing even Zang Kong can do to compromise the Pearls; by their very nature they are 100% pure.
In addition, you have discovered the following information about the Bleak Ravens Sect:
*Immediately after breaking through to the Reality Forming Stage, the Sect Leader slew two of his major rivals and then departed. Some described him as 'fleeing,' while others claim he merely demonstrated the prodigious speed of the early Reality Forming stage.
*Since then he has not been seen outside the large subterranean complex that he fled to. The Bleak Ravens took up residence in the complex short after and have patrolled it diligently. They have sustained some losses, and a few of their lower-ranked officers seem to suffer from bizarre afflictions consistent with possible Diagram effects.
*The Bleak Ravens practice a path of Heterodox Cultivation invented by their leader. It is unknown what Reality effects he may possess after breaking through into a new Stage, but their Dao Cleaving experts are able to perform cryptic auguries and manipulate shadows. Peak Dao Cleaving officers have been seen merging into and teleporting from shadow to shadow.
*Prior to their Sect Leader's ascension, the Ravens were the second most powerful faction in the area. Now that they have all but abandoned Deplian, their influence has waned.
*Rival sects are marshaling forces to attack the Ravens and are preparing to strike within three months.
Xiaoling has picked up the following rumors:
*The Bleak Raven Leader critically damaged his personal foundation when breaking through to Reality Forming. Something about the dungeon he is inhabiting allows him to stabilize his foundation, and he is slowly repairing the injury. When he emerges, he'll be powerful enough to seize unilateral control of the Deplian region. Source: Cousin of a friend of the Bleak Ravens' Third Grand Elder.
*The Lich arch-terrorist Xylitemmeral the Destroyer has launched an all-out assault on a Ruby Court fortress some twenty thousand miles away. He has laid siege to the walls from a floating tower of emerald-hued orichalcum conjured from thin air. The Dao Cleaving-lead garrison of the area has been unable to repel him despite inflicting colossal losses to his army of constructs and undead. All the hoarded resources of a millennia-old elder lich are being unleashed in a single titanic onslaught. Upon his brow burns the Archstar of Xytl-Teloch, its viridian flame lending him the desperate strength and fury of its maker, the Fellborn**. The battle is not likely to be resolved until Peak Dao Cleaving reinforcements arrive from other Ruby Court encampments. Source: intercepted Vane intelligence reports headed for Eastern Kong.
*Several members of the Bleak Ravens have been found exsanguinated in remote portions of the Border Zone, thousands of kilometers from the complex they are purportedly guarding. Source: Owner of your hotel
**An infamous Elven eccentric who crafted so many Artifacts of enormous power that he descended into madness and eventually turned to evil. Murdered billions in his swath of destruction before the Diagram Nations temporarily set aside their internal bickering to put him down. The Fellborn was rumored to possess the capability to sacrifice the essence of others in the construction of his Artifacts, though this exacted a toll of sanity even more grievous than standard diminishment.
Overall, it's been a fairly productive two weeks, though less profitable than you'd hoped for in the way of general materials. You've gained much in the way of potentially actionable information. Now that you have a better lay of the land, what are your intentions?
Tactics and relevant omakes will improve your chances.
[ ] Confront the Bleak Ravens - Diplomatically, of course. If rumors of their Patriarch's self-crippling are true, that should be confirmable with manipulation or - if necessary - kidnapping and interrogation. If it turns out you were mislead, still you don't get the impression that the Patriarch would leave his secluded meditation merely for the sake of some junior officers. Once you have gauged their strength you can make them an offer they can't refuse, or break them piecemeal.
[ ] Assault the Bleak Ravens - It's too risky to enter a contest of maneuver against a Sect of diviners. Even if their auguries are nowhere near as reliable as the surveillance and foresight spells of the Diagram Schools, they are practiced with their abilities and have spent much more time developing them than you. Against an opponent with superior information, only superior force will suffice. The Bleak Ravens' rivals are reeling and fearful, but experienced in contending successfully against their centuries-old foes. They will make adequate allies for you to empower in bringing the Ravens down. And if the Reality Forming Patriarch should actually be uninjured and emerge from his cell - why, you'll take the opportunity to slip into the chamber and the Vault connected to it.
*Xiaoling and Suizhen will stay behind.
[ ] Investigate Xylitemmerral - Xiaoling's contacts picked up this information, it would be a shame not to exploit it. Your window of opportunity is limited. The risks are not inconsiderable, of course; Xylitemmerral has the Dao Cleaving garrison opposing him on the back foot. His power is greater than that of any ordinary lich, but perhaps the opportunities for plunder are greater as well...?
*Several days' travel time to go there and come back. If you leave now you should make it before the situation is resolved, but on the off chance you don't, you may waste time for little benefit.
*You're not sure you would be immune to Xylitemmerral's array of esoteric attacks. Who knows what the Archstar of Xytl-Teloch can actually accomplish?
I don't care for buffing Xiaoling after seeing her personality.
With Consume Personally, we are almost at Peak Dao Cleaving, with magnificent versatility of effects through Artifacts we can sacrifice that half-stage for.
We can upgrade Suizen's eyes (Likely her cheat-like option that makes her a Heroine Candidate) and secure more of her Loyalty (And put her a good portion through Soul Chrysalis to boot!), or we can use it to put ourselves near the Peak of Dao Cleaving in combat strength (Or instead, build a fearsome Artifact).
Interesting though in how this dude is a Lich who's capable of threatening Dao Cleaving Experts--even if he needs an Artifact to do it. He's a tempting target! That Artifact alone would be a handsome prize. And we are a horrible matchup against a Diagram Lich if it comes to a straight fight. We'd be able to get some rep out of it too.
Still, not sure if we should go that way, it's worthy of consideration though.
This actually has a similar effect to giving it to Xiaoling in the ways I care about (keeping party harmony) since it keeps her from feeling inadequate and also lets us get the eyes thing I wanted in the last update but ultimately did not vote for. Also, since Suizhen is a better cultivator atm, this is more efficient than using it on ourselves or Xiaoling. Besides, we just boosted Xiaoling loyalty.
Not sure what to choose for the other option; going after the lich seems the most rewarding, but also quite risky. Assaulting the bleak ravens seems like a good option too.
Xyliterramal sounds like an Aztec name, could be interesting. Maybe he has a special human sacrifice spell based on the Blood Sign to extract great power.

Seems like the most profitable arrangement. If we're lucky, Suizhen will develop the ability to see what kind of shenanigans Xyl is up to.
e-
Hm. We made an Artifact, a Magnum Opus, that would allow other people to use the Diagram.
Is it possible the Archstar, as the Fellborn produced something similar in his madness? An Artifact, a Magnum Opus, that allows for the sacrifice of others to fuel Artifice, even if one is not themselves able.
Hmm, a thought: the guy who made the archstar may have been using other people's essences to artifice, maybe his artifact gives a similar sort of ability to the lich—meaning the lich is the one draining the people.

Xylitemmerral is too far away to be the cause of the Bleak Ravens' exsanguination; it is likely a more local force is behind that. Also, exsanguination seems too polite to fit his style of horrendous overkill. Could just be a Cultivator assassin imitating the techniques of the Diagram, of course.

Note that the situation with the Bleak Ravens may have developed (potentially in ways that leave you unable to exploit the lich whose complex they are presumably inhabiting) if you leave for several days to attend to Xylitemmerral. Travel-wise the closer lich would be more efficient, though without knowing their spell layouts and cooperativeness it's difficult to say.
