Yes people this is our chance, to kill this annoying Lystheni problem and turn back to more important matters. Like the giant space Locust horde.
I will vote for:
[ ] Shoot first, shoot often. Sucker punch the Lystheni with an all-out assault. You possess the advantage of quality. An alpha strike could easily burn half of the Lystheni's ships before they get their engines started, and secure the battle.

@PoptartProdigy Is it safe to assume our ships are at battle stations already? Would the marines have a tight beam laser set up to communicate with our CL? Are there other Lystheni alive at their shuttle?

Time for violence has ended, we should try to reach a peaceful solution. With the Ranchi.

I guess she wanted to go out in a blaze of glory instead of being defanged into irrelevance?

I can't imagine why she would think she could actually take on Virmire in a ground assault, even if her shitty navy could get past our fleet.

Either the tech they looted was super fucking good, or she was a little delusional.

they probably either thought they could kill us, then seize the single centralized method of control everyone has (they have one, so 100% of well understood governments have them) and then declare vimier theirs, or they intended to feed us to the rachni then leverage the resulting good will into being left alone. So more massively stupid rather than delusional.

Maybe we should pull a Harvey Dent on this one (think opening court scene in the Dark Knight). Does it really favor us to stop talking now?
Yes, we could fire first and be safe. But, what then? The fighting and winning will be the easy part. The hard part will be gaining anything of worth from all those occupied/blockaded Lystheni worlds...
I know we are all ready to pound those annoying lizards into the curb, but let us give 'diplomacy' one last try:

[X] Write-In: Last Chance
-[X] Play it cool. Depart in your own shuttle without comment to anybody. Get off of this toothless platform before the shooting starts.
--[X] Get the Dalatrass in front of a message terminal. Make clear to her that if her next words aren't "Stand down", the blood of her children will be on her hands.
---[X] She says something different? They power up their weapons/try to escape? Destroy them!
---[X] They yield? Board them and signal the rest of the fleet.

— Just sayin' maybe it's possible to order general surrender from dalatrass' (code phrase or secret password).... oh, who am I kidding cult's are dumb
Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if the Dalatrass could order a stand-down of Lystheni forces. But given how daft she just proved, I'm not sure she would.

Anyway, how certain are we that this is the real Dalatrass, and not some sort of decoy?
I am fairly confident, if only because the woman we were talking to behaved like the real Dalatrass earlier on. She made statements as if she had legitimate power to bind and to loose, to commit to decisions and have those decisions be carried out.

Furthermore, salarians are short-lived and we have no reason to think the current Dalatrass is anything other than a very old woman. There is little reason for her to send a decoy to negotiations that might end favorably, just on the off chance that circumstance and opportunity will give her a chance to kidnap her Virmirean opposite number.

It's more likely that she would have duly appointed a younger successor as second-in-command before she left, and said "if anything happens to me, she's in charge."

There's also the fact that the only one who isn't dead would have no reason to know the command codes due to having a pilot.
It's entirely possible that she'd know the passwords and her pilot wouldn't. But you're not wrong.

So the Lysenthi know that their Dalatrass wanted to take us hostage. So they're ready for an attack. If we try to leave in the shuttles, they will open fire. Let's get these shields up, and order our navy to attack.

Edit: and get a fucking warship in here to get us off this rock.
I think it's more complicated than that.

The Lystheni almost certainly didn't come here specifically planning to take Mira hostage, or they would have done so at a time of their choosing, rather than waiting until Mira plunked down a steamrollery list of demands, then complaining about it, and then and only then trying to take us hostage.

To me, it's pretty clear that "take the Virmirean prime minister hostage" was, like, their Plan D or so. We already sunk their Plans A, B, and C by not just folding up and giving in as soon as they revealed they had other hostages, and then by making a harsh list of demands their dalatrass wasn't willing to concede.

...

What this means is that the Lystheni captains were almost certainly briefed and prepared for the scenario "we've taken the Virmirean prime minister hostage, now get us aboard the flagship and leg it!" And maybe even for the scenario "we tried to take the prime minister hostage and failed, OH CRAP!"

However, they do not know that this plan is exactly what is going on right now. As long as they don't get a clue, they'll assume negotiations are proceeding as normal until given reason to think otherwise. Once they do have a clue, they're likely to react competently(ish) and decisively (for sure).

However, this still basically supports the 'alpha strike' conclusion. If we can knock out some of their ships very quickly and put the remaining ships on the defensive, forcing them to flee or be destroyed, without leaving them reason to think the Dalatrass is dead aboard the defense platform, it is fairly likely that they will react chaotically and be easy prey, as the Dalatress expected that kidnapping Mira would do to Virmire.

We may need to be ready for one or more Lystheni warships trying to board the platform in a desperate attempt to rescue the Dalatrass, though.

huh.. Just thought up a potintialy interesting option. and possibly the only way I can see to get her and her polity to surrender peacefully.
Shove the entire truth down her throat. show here exactly how outclassed her fleet is by ours. the recording of previous battles where both sides lost more tonnage then she currently has. of the fact that our government is set up that a single decapitations strike (which she failed miserably at) would not even cause it to stumble, and only serve to enrage our population.

I'd give it about a 20% chance of working.
It's not a bad idea, but I'd strongly suggest trying it AFTER we kick the ass of the Lystheni squadron in this particular star system.

I mean, personally i'm just a tad insulted that their "plan" to kidnap the leader of their stronger neighbor (not even going into the fact that our collapse just means they get to fight the Rachni) was limited to thinking a handful of small-arms would be equal to the task of not only handling a highly trained military leader who is member of a species notable for its strength in biotics, but also her bodyguards and the fleet hovering nearby who unlike them has actually been involved in space warfare.

There is overconfidence and then there is a lack of tactical insight that would make even a Krogan flinch.
I honestly think the Lystheni had no comprehension of how effective Mira and Kirai's biotics would be at neutralizing their gunfire, having been out of contact with just about everyone who uses biotics in combat for several generations.

I also honestly don't think they comprehend just how significant combat experience is for a military force because, so far as we know... they don't have any. Nor do any living members of their culture, nor did the grandparents of any living member of their culture, nor their grandparents.

The only problem with this approach is the Lystheni captains were almost certainly briefed on the possibility of the Dalatrass making an attempt to take us hostage, because they would need to act quickly and in very precise ways for everyone to get out of here alive. The Lystheni are strategically moronic, but so far the tactical execution of their plans has been pretty good, so we have to assume they planned for this contingency even if it wasn't their Plan A.

Thus, there are seventeen Lystheni ship captains out there whose list of "what to do" includes "oh crap, Plan D where we take the Virmirean prime minister hostage." They don't know they're already on Plan D, and they don't know that worse yet the Dalatrass tried Plan D and fucked it up, depositing them squarely on Plan Z.

But if we act in a way that we clearly wouldn't be acting under Plans A, B, or C... they're going to assume Plan D or worse applies, at which point opening fire on our shuttle is very much a possibility.

So, plan outline:

1) Secure the docking bay, prepare for boarding & explosive decompression.etc VIPs stay back deeper in with some guards.
2) Message our fleet, tell them the plan (below), our CL pops one of their ships, probably a FF.
3) Message the Lystheni and tell them we have the Dalatress. Fleet advances to secure the station. FF and K focus on anti-screen duties. CL kills the opposing CL to attain local 'big gun' superiority.
4) Destroy their fleet.
5) Retrieve our people once safe to do so and leave.

Battle stations are too stressful to maintain for weeks at a time, although they are on alert. You can communicate with the CL. Please re-check the update for the status of the Lystheni on the defense platform.

All their soldiers are dead, nothing mentioned about their pilots.

Edit: Slightly silly, if the pilots weren't dead then they'd have noticed the hostile takeover we've done.

I intended to message them once we are aboard our own ship. But, you are right the transfer time incurs some risks..
We could probably also do the same from the platform, but I imagine it could also be destroyed by a lucky first strike.
Maybe trick them by sending the Dalatrass's shuttle their way...
In the end everything but "Shoot first" bears some form of risk.

Take the initiative. They don't know the status of the Dalatress, so they may be unwilling to hit the station.

Honestly I'm worried that the Lystheni, paranoid as they are, may begin purging their data banks if we try to blitzkrieg into their territory. I'd rather play it cool and attempt to capture VIPs to ensure that we still have some sources of information on them and their discoveries no matter what.

Honestly, given that Mira is some kind of legendary tactical genius, and we're not, I'd rather not just do a detailed write-in plan about exactly HOW we go about "shoot first, shoot often." I figure that given the broad directive "shoot first and often" she will come up with a good plan for doing so that minimizes risk to VIPs, just as given the broad directive "kick Lystheni ass" she will in fact personally kick the aforementioned asses.

Also, I'm pretty sure our first shot from the cruiser should be aimed at the Lystheni cruiser in an attempt to get some damage in and hopefully disable it before their barriers go up. But as per the previous paragraph what do I know?

In the end everything but "Shoot first" bears some form of risk.
"Shoot first" ALSO bears some risk, mainly the risk that one or more Lystheni captains will fire on the station we're standing on. The station would probably survive a few hits, but maybe not, and we might get unlucky and be directly in the path of an incoming mass driver slug.

That said, there are no truly safe options here, and I think we're more likely to benefit from the tactical advantage of surprise than from making it to our flagship before any Lystheni realize what's going on. SO...

We don't even need them to fire the first shot. Their leader confessed to planning a pre-emptive strike. To our face. They were planning to Pearl Harbor us, until our maneuvering cut that short. This was going to end up with a war right up until we proposed the conference, and they were still planning to go to war.

[X] Secure the Payload
-[X] Take control of the hanger. VIPs leave with the Dalatress and (if living) her aide.
-[X] Board the CL, CL takes out a ship. Fleet advances to secure the station. FF and K focus on anti-screen duties.
-[X] Message the Lystheni and tell them we have the Dalatress and that their kidnap attempt has failed but make it seem like we're still on the station.
--[X] If the CL is close to being destroyed (somehow), message that she's on the CL. Provide video.
-[X] Destroy their fleet.
-[X] Retrieve our people once safe to do so and leave.

Analysis & feedback please.

Those ships don't have a chance and it isn't their fault their leader is fucking cartoon villain insane/stupid. Once we're off the station tell the 3rd to go and why along with video just so they know this isn't a power play on our part. Before the Lystheni figure out something is wrong jam their comms, and cripple their ship.

I want their entire population to get a front row seat to why we're blowing the fuck out of everything. Also this dumb bitch doesn't go back. She obviously has some kind of cult of personality, make her watch us cripple her people then put a bullet in her.

I wish we knew just how fucked up the rest of the population is so we could demand their navy surrender along with the video evidence of the dumb bitch bring this down on them. After all we at least know OUR design is worth a damn.

[] Launch the moment the first shot is fired the Lystheni ships will be so busy trying not to die they'll ignore us.
