"Lirra, it's ok..." Tanwen softly took Lirra into her arms to calm her, whispering softly. "They don't matter, they were just weaklings and now they're dead. You're alive. You won. Just take what you need from them and forget it..."
It's endearing how bad Tanwen is at being comforting because she tries regardless

I just find Forge to be of limited use. Not sure how many weapons we'll actually be making but materials and process seems more complicated than Alchemy (I always thought it weird how easy they make picking up smithing etc in games) and Alchemy, I think, is all round more useful.

Smithing is far from simple, but I'm not sure why you think Alchemy is less complicated.

I think the general idea is that basic Forging, while probably not great for making things might enhance the ability to maintain them.

Yep, and we just picked up a sword and spear that are in need of some repairs. The Academy probably has a grinding wheel and such we can apply them to, but we'll need the minimum skill to use it properly.

Just that I think it'd make more sense that we pick up basic tools for gathering and mixing reagents etc for alchemy than for actually making weapons. Well, apart from stone age weaponry. If it's more for fixing/maintaining, that's fair enough. I still think, with what happened to Chloe, that it's more fitting to learn about potions/healing.

Damn I really wanna go fight a Dragon, but we're just not in any shape to do so. Crap gear, weak skills, only the one ally and no intel other then "A dead guy thinks a dragon killed him". Bah, something to keep in mind for later.

Keeping things on the downlow while making friends, sounds good. Need to work on our swording if we want to go Dragon hunting!

That's why we took medicine as a skill. Besides, we can still pick it up later. Echos make it very easy to get a bunch of low level ablities without taking training time away from our core skills.

Actually, speaking of our abilities: @Renu If we're at the Academy long enough, will we eventually see some improvements from all the exercising, training, and eating better Lirra's doing? Obviously, it would to be slower than the sudden jumps we're getting from Wisps.

I like the idea of being a Jack of all trades but I don't want Lirra to be spread too thin too quickly. I don't think novice medicine is enough to move on to another wistful focus. I'd like to pick up the two healing theory skills but I can accept the thread wanting something more practical. That's one of the reasons why I went with the crafting skill that compliments medicine. If anything, I'd suggest we pick up the novice forge skill later.

"Lirra!"

The changeling felt something hard hit her cheek, and tasted blood in her mouth - so much blood... nowhere to escape... too many - and blinked her eyes wearily. She was… in a glade, on her knees in a middle of a huge field of flowers, expanding as far as her eyes could see. Her hands ran up and down her body in a panic - claws, raking on her back… lungs pierced… where's my hand - checking dozens of wounds that didn't exist, until her mouth opened and she took a big gulp of air - can't breath... drowning… my throat - then let out a wail until she retched.

"What the fuck!? Lirra, come on! Stop it, Keeper!"
"Lirra, it's ok..." Tanwen softly took Lirra into her arms to calm her, whispering softly. "They don't matter, they were just weaklings and now they're dead. You're alive. You won. Just take what you need from them and forget it..."
I'm counting this as evidence against Tanwen being a sociopath. She genuinely seemed concerned about us, and if she was that good of an actor I'd expect her to get along better with our other friends, plus be better at comforting us. When she comforted us, it sounded a lot more like what she might be telling herself about her party than like what you would expect to work on someone like Lirra. Not to mention she hasn't tried to turn us against our other friends yet.
Therefore, I'm also counting it as evidence for the idea that Tanwen is emotionally damaged from losing her team, and weaker evidence for the possibility that she is super racist. The idea that she might be the Demon King is also less likely, because it's similar to the sociopath option.

Eventually, something caught Lirra's attention, but it wasn't Warblooms. The grass was flattened, and even the shrubs and bushes were pushed down as if by a tempest. Curious, she followed the broken greenery despite Tanwen's insistence that they'd better be served looking for flowers than whatever did this. After less than a minute of walk, however, she could see some Warblooms growing even on the trees. What could have caused such a growth?
Tanwen seemed pretty insistent that there was nothing there. AND there's only 3 bodies. It's possible that the 4th was killed before they encountered the dragon, but it's also possible that the 4th was strong/lucky enough to escape. Which means there may be someone who saw the dragon and is at the academy right now, or... standing right beside us. Tanwen did happen to have some dragon blood with her...

I don't know. Demon King might actually be a subset of Super Racist, depending on how things play out.

Also, I suspect Tanwen was emotionally damaged to begin with and then lost her team (which may have added damage).

If she was counting correctly and guessed which pieces went with which, there probably had been three. She put on her new gloves and got to work. That mystery could wait for a bit. Once she had put enough remains together, she passed her hands over them and they burst into fire, leaving only ashes at the center of the circle.
'... left us alone…'
Looks like we found Tanwen's team.

The idea that she might be the Demon King is also less likely, because it's similar to the sociopath option.

I'm expecting it to come out eventually that we're a Gravekeeper, but there's really no reason to jump the gun on that, and it's still no guarantee we'd be believed, so...

So, any ideas about where Tanwen got the dragon blood she gave Chloe? It's supposed to be rare and super expensive, so it's probably not something that most people have on them.
As I see it there are multiple possibilities:
1. She was part of the party that was killed by the dragon, and somehow got the blood during that. Possibly she killed the dragon elsewhere, or wounded it? If this is true, it means she is incredibly strong, increasing the likelihood of her being the Demon King.

2. She bought it before she got here. If this is the case, it means that she is probably very rich, or was saving up for a rather long time to get it. Possibly she was placed by the fae in a noble family? Perhaps said family resented her because of her being a changeling, thus causing her to be emotionally damaged? Or perhaps she saved up all of her money to get it, in order to heal someone she cared about? If so, the fact that she still had the blood, plus her willingness to give it to us, points to that person being dead (thus more evidence for her being emotionally damaged).

3. She stole it. If this is the case, it makes it likely that she either had a backstory similar to ours (abandoned and living on the streets) and became proficient at theft in order to survive, or that she did it on a whim. If she became adept at thievery on a whim, it lends evidence towards her being a sociopath. If she learned to steal in order to survive though, it's more likely that she is emotionally damaged, as being abandoned would probably do that to you.

Partly caughted up.
Seems fun and sad in all the right ways...
About the most recent update...wasn't Tanwen's Dragon blood 'fresh'.
Implying that She recently got it, Which would be weird If dragons were extinct...
So I'd Personaly run with that the dragons attacked Tanwen's party, who probally didn't kill the beast but was able to take Some of its blood and Then left her team to die.
...I mean atleast She seems to like us. Either Because we are Also a changeling, a keeper of the gray or Maybe our shy personality really klikted With her.

Also Also What is that theory about Tanwen being the Demon king? What caused that theory to Crop up?

"Exactly what I said," the other girl answered, pulling out a flask filled with a dark red liquid. "Fresh dragon blood. Quite a waste to use it here if you ask me, but if you insist..."
Huh, it was fresh. That makes it more likely that Tanwen and her party were the ones that encountered the dragon. Well spotted.

Why she likes us is more or less tied to the question of why she showed no empathy for her teammates. The current hypotheses are:
Based on Tanwen's observed lack of empathy, (along with pride, irresponsibleness, and manipulativeness)
here are the explanations I think make sense, and the implications they have for why she wants to hang out with us:

NOTE: these are not in any particular order. I am not saying which of these I think are more likely, nor which ones I think are better or worse for her/us.

Option 1: Tanwen is extremely racist, and doesn't see anyone other than changelings as people.
If this is true then it makes perfect sense for her to want to hang out with the "only" person here that she has met. It's even possible that all she wants out of hanging out with us is companionship. She probably sees us as either a friend or a possible friend. She probably is also capable of feeling empathy for us, just not for anyone else here.

Option 2: Tanwen is a sociopath.
This also fits with how she seems very impulsive, though that could easily just be part of her personality. If this is true then she probably has multiple goals here. She wants us to get more comfortable around her, and feel like she's our friend. If we care about her, then we will hesitate less to do something we wouldn't normally do (like cover for her after she kills someone) when she calls in the life debt. She may even get multiple uses out of us for smaller things, as well as the life debt. Having us as someone with a life debt AND who thinks of her as a friend is strictly better than having us as someone who has a life debt and distrusts her.
Furthermore, Tanwen might have a chance to observe some our abilities (or just ask us about them), which will help her determine just how useful we are and what she should use us for. This also gives her a chance to talk to us and try to make us distrust our friends. She can also try to stoke our paranoia about revealing to anyone that we are a Keeper of the Grey, possibly by telling us stories (whether true or not) about Keepers that she knew who were ostracized or abused for revealing what they were.

Option 3: Tanwen is the demon king, here to get the same training as heroes so that she can understand how to defeat and kill them better.
If this is true, then it's not all that different from the sociopath option (she may even be a sociopath as well as demon king). It does give a slightly higher chance of her having empathy, just not for heroes or heroes in training. Furthermore, she may be determining if she should recruit us to be one of her lieutenants eventually. Probably not, but maybe. It would be interesting.

Option 4: Tanwen is emotionally damaged, either from losing her team or from something that happened before that.
If this is the case, she may be putting on a strong front even though she does feel sorrow for her fallen comrades. It's possible that she really does have empathy, she is simply acting like she doesn't because it's the easiest way to avoid breaking down into tears. Her dead team is probably still out there, and she may want them to be pyred as a sign of respect and a way for her to grieve. It also allows her to hang out with Lirra.

Option 5: something completely different.
Implications: that I spent a whole bunch of time armchair psychologizing a character that just plain has different motivations and personality than I think she does, and that I don't really know all that much about yet? I know I said that I wouldn't say which I think is most likely, but by default it's probably this one.
1. Tanwen is racist.
2. Tanwen is a sociopath.
3. Tanwen is the Demon King. And,
4. Tanwen is emotionally damaged.

Tanwen liking us for being a changeling fits well with her being racist (since she hates everyone else, and no one else is a changeling).
I think idea that she might be the Demon King came from speculation on why she showed no empathy for her dead teammates, combined with the statement in the very first post about this being an academy to train heroes for when the Demon King comes back.
I mean, it's set in a high school academy for Heroes so they can beat the Demon Lord whenever he comes back

Does this answer any questions you have/give you some background on the conversation? Any other questions or questions I didn't answer fully?

Yes, my good tree, this answers me questions.
About the what is Tanwen answer, I am not sure about the Demon king nor the sociopath part.
For one, I do not claim to be an expert but asfar as I am aware a sociopath is someone who has emotions to start with but lost them through...wel trauma. So in a way it is the same as emotionally damaged. To be born with is called psychopathy I THINK. I can be totally wrong on that but to tired to fact check.

I get the feeling that Tanwen has a strong/weak view of the world. The weak die and feed the strong, making them stronger in turn.
That is maybe WHY tanwen likes us. She knows we are a keeper of the gray and wel, our shtick is feeding off of the dead (who are often the weak) to grow stronger.
This might show us to be strong and with us being a changeling, a good friend for Tanwen.
I mean we can grow way faster then others by pulling on the echoes of the dead.

I think however that Tanwen wants a friend and we are her nervous friend that eats corpses through fire.
I dunno, we will see won't we?

Certainly not an expert here either, but from what I've googled (an authoritative source, to be sure :p), sociopath is the same as psychopath (just another name for it), and it's a combination of genes and experiences that causes it. I would differentiate between sociopathy and emotional damage in this case as an emotionally damaged person being damaged in a way that does not cause them to become a sociopath (ie: no narcissism, no extra impulsiveness beyond what they would have otherwise, and not having whatever other traits lead to a diagnosis of antisocial personality disorder a.k.a. Sociopathy).
So the way I'm using the word, someone can be emotionally damaged without being a sociopath, but someone who is a sociopath is emotionally damaged.

I agree that Tanwen definitely seems to have a strong eat weak view of the world. To build off of your idea that this is why she likes us, I would add that she likes us because of this AND because we are not threatening to her. Many of our friends are quite strong, possibly even stronger than Tanwen, yet she does not like them. I think that if you are correct, she likes us because we embody her worldview of how the strong eat the weak while not actually being strong enough to 'eat' her. All of our friends are either weak or strong enough to be a rival/threat, while we occupy the middle ground of eating those weaker than us (the dead), without being in danger of eating her or otherwise challenging her dominance.
If I'm correct about that, I would expect Tanwen to also make friends with bullies who are weaker than her (since they 'prey' upon those weaker than them). If only the part that you mentioned is true (her liking us because we embody her worldview/are strong), then I would expect her to make friends with others who are strong (but not necessarily bullies), or not to make friends with anyone else (because no one else is a strong changeling). We can differentiate this from the pure racism possibility if a 'weak' changeling shows up; if Tanwen only likes us because we are a changeling then she should also try to be friends with the new changeling. If she likes us because we are a changeling AND strong, then she would not make friends with the new changeling.

Overall, I hope you're right that she just wants a friend and we are her nervous friend that eats corpses through fire. I'm mostly trying to think of predictions for everything because I enjoy over analyzing things. :lol
We shall see what happens indeed!

I don't know how to reset the color without removing all formatting and the flags didn't work here and I need them, so...
1) Edit the update, select the text, press the 'Text Color' button, select 'X' in the bottom-right corner, OR
2) Edit the update, switch to BBCode Editor, Find and Replace all [color=#ffffff] and [/color] tags with "" (empty string).
...also, what are flags?

Tanwen liking us for being a changeling fits well with her being racist (since she hates everyone else, and no one else is a changeling).
It may have somethin to do with us not being able to lie to her, and being someone who just takes her word at face value.
That she has power over us (and that we will never attempt to wiggle out of it due to our nature) doesn't hurt either.
