Zoids Revelations

On the planet Zi, mechanical lifeforms known as Zoids evolved.

The destiny of Zoids became entwined with mankind and their further evolution was guided by them. This began as simple domestication steering their development and changed to becoming more engineered reaching a point where it was possible to produce Zoids entirely in laboratories and factories. And as the scattered tribes of Zi began to war, Zoids changed from being used as beasts of burden to being used for war.

As the many wars raged on the tribes of Zi unified and formed new nations. Republics and empires that found themselves locked in battle. Nothing seemed like it would bring about the war. When the heavens fell and one of Zi's very moons shattered upon the surface, it only paused the bloodshed. Nations were wiped out with new ones rising to take their place. The ancient history of the world became lost in the fighting. There would be an occasional period of peace only for a new divide and war to occur. And Zoids changed from simply being combat mounts to being the true weapons of the wars with various armaments built in. A Zoids arms race occurred with the leader having every advantage on the battlefield.

After many chaotic centuries of fighting, the Helic Republic and its allies emerged victories. Its opposing enemies slayed with their territories and technologies split among the victors. The wars were finally over. Many looking back with disdain on the era calling all that senseless conflict the "Royal's Wars." But what became of the Zoids after all of this as a new century was ushered in?

Having long been used for combat, Zoids found themselves on a different battlefield. What was once a method to wage war instead became a sport. Lethal fighting changed into organized entertainment. And to enforce the safety of such spectacles, the Zoids Battle Commission was founded. As the overseers of all combat, their reach extended until they became a de facto world government. Zoids competitions were the bread and circuses used to entertain the masses. Robotic judges were rolled out to manage the day to day operations. Satellites were launched to monitor the globe and even launch down judges as needed.

But not all are happy under this rule. Organized crime begins to form often handling their own more dangerous events. Various smaller corporations and nations are willing to get their hands dirty a chance to push themselves up. Despite a lack of wars, each nation feels that they can't let their military get outpaced by independent Zoid teams. New weaponry and Zoids are researched while advanced relics of the past are uncovered. Even if some parts of the past are best left undisturbed. And amidst it all, some areas and competitions find themselves closer to the bloody wars of before than sanitized sport of today. Many pilots find themselves closer to being gladiators competing for their lives rather than athletes competing for the thrill of the sport.

It's official. This is the nicest bed you have ever had. It's so soft and fluffy that you sink into it. You really weren't expecting anywhere near as good accommodations. After all, who knew that tournament organizers would care that much about their disposable pilots getting a good night's sleep? Say what you will about them paying people to suffer for the entertainment of others, but at least they don't skimp on room and board. And here you thought it would be hard to sleep knowing that tomorrow might dictate how many months you spend in a hospital bed… or whether you actually walk away from this forsaken city at all. You never would of guessed you'd get one of your best night's rest the night after signing up as "filler" for the Daímonas Grand Tournament.

The Daímonas Grand Tournament is one of Zi's most infamous spectacles. Hosted in New Daímonas City located in the desolate Demon Maze, it is one of the few times a year that the city and its coliseum are actually packed. With three main events, it promises to deliver something for everyone. The main event is of course a mostly normal tournament consisting of one on one matches. Only minus the safety regulations that every other approved tournament has. The other two events helping draw crowds are a series of showcases and a historical "reenactment." All three have their stars and then the wretches dragged out to make them look more impressive. Countless wannabes are hired to be glorified moving targets in an event that prides itself on being more brutal than every other legal competition. You don't know if New Daímonas City bribes the Zoids Battle Commission that much or if they just like having one event that can out thrill their criminal competitors. Star pilots find themselves sponsored by both corporations and governments to show off while helpless unknowns are used to make them look that much more impressive. But really only the truly desperate sign up to fill out those numbers. Those with no other choice but to take a risk with potentially their life on the line... And sadly you fall under that category.

Unfortunately… (Choose one)
[ ] You need the money that badly and you need it fast. You don't have the time to wait for a safer opportunity and you don't have anything to work with. The pay for just filling out the numbers is more than most professional pilots make in a year, probably because the odds of never being able to pilot again are so high. Even if you hobble out on crutches it will be worth it. And you might even have money left over if things go well enough.
[ ] You need connections. Militaries, corporations, independent Zoid teams, and even criminal organizations have representatives here to do business or scout out new talent. One of the 'filler' pilots has the odds stacked against them so even surviving is sometimes enough to get an offer. And if you want to get a chance to talk to a general or an arms dealer, well it's hard to find another. You just need to think of this as a networking opportunity. A potentially lethal networking opportunity.
[ ] You don't have a choice. New Daímonas City allows competing as one of the few opportunities to lower jail time and you're too screwed otherwise not to take it. You can't afford to rot it a cell any longer. Do well and they won't just lower your sentence, they'll wipe your record clean. This is risky but you screwed up and now it is your only shot at freedom. It sucks, but you have to take it.

And so tomorrow is going to be spent trying to win over officials for the best openings in the events. The Daímonas Grand Tournament last for three days with the first consisting of showcases, the second opening with a reenactment before starting the tournament, and the third being the climatic end to the tournament.

A showcase involves the most barely put together pieces of cannon fodder getting slaughtered by a top of the line Zoid. It is all about showing overwhelming power. The targets have to pray that their Zoid's safety mechanisms work. Downed Zoids will be played with and further mangled to fill out time. "Accidents" tend to happen to help highlight the strength of new weaponry. After all the trained professional wasn't expecting it to be that powerful and in no way meant to purposefully destroy that Zoid beyond recognition and cripple or kill the pilot. And any cannon fodder pilot wanting to try to take down the star of the show is faced with a double edged sword. On one hand whoever is footing the bill for the showcase will be insanely pissed if they succeed. But if it is somehow successful, the sponsor's rivals might be pleased enough to return the favor and talent scouts will know they found a diamond in the rough.

The historical reenactment is a glorified blood bath to stroke the ego of the Zoids Battle Commission. They usually use a Helic Republic victory from the wars as claimed a basis even if the historical accuracy of these events is a farce. They start with a large number of Zoids in a grand melee that sends pieces flying and end with a Zoid painted to look like a republic hero charging and tearing through all remaining enemy forces to with a triumphant roar. It's really an excuse to see as many Zoids come flying apart in the shortest amount of time. Very little is done to give a semblance of accuracy and its amazing that officials can claim their educational with a straight face. There is a delay between it and the start of the tournament to clean up all the scrap. No one has much of an advantage until the hero arrives and no one has the time to waste attacking downed opponents. But a downed Zoid won't be cleared until the end and odds are it is getting stepped on.

Finally the tournament is always looking for some pilots to fill out the number. Nobodies to help make everything seem bigger and grander. It gives the professionals more chances to shine before their real opponents. Plus star pilots can be real divas who throw a hissy fit if they get knocked out round one or rile fans to do it for them. Outside of the fact they have are using lent out junker of a Zoid, the filler pilots don't have much against them. If they're lucky they get a match or two against other dredges before going against a star. If they're both incredibly skilled and lucky enough to defeat a professional, well then they'll leave with a fat bonus and plenty of hiring offers. Maybe there is an upset and humiliated pilot after, but they don't have that many options for revenge.

It is possible to compete in all three provided you survive long enough to do so. But refusing multiple "performances" is practically the one right you still have after signing up. Tournament officials have final say on where each of the disposable pilots end up. And the penalties for refusing an assignment and breaking contract are quite large. If you win one over, you can find yourself in a tournament slot where you are against other dredges in worse machines for a couple rounds before finally facing a professional. On the flip side, if you end up disliked then you could end up in a Molga with a busted wheel for a showcase by an arms dealer really wanting to boost sales of charged particle weaponry. You have tomorrow to look around and talk to people before the tournament starts the next day. So finding officials and winning them over is going to be key. It might even mean the difference between success and death.

And if that wasn't stressful enough, you also need to deal with those that would have you killed tomorrow if they found out that you're really... (Choose one)
[ ] A Royal Heir. There are enough people that you know who'd string you up to add to the festivities. They might even try to make it part of the 'reenactment'. And you refuse to die as part of their spectacle. You know you're meant for something greater.
[ ] For lack of a better term, an Ancient Zoidian. Plenty of corporations and governments would be willing to dissect you if that's what it took to unlock ancient technology that you don't even remember. You can't end up a lab rat.
[ ] What they wrongly call a Cultist. Being religious is already informally frowned by some, many of the hated kings and emperors of the past claimed divine right. But ignorant officials have labelled your faith too dangerous to allow.
[ ] A Spy. On most days you'd even say you were a good one. But when things go wrong, do they go wrong. Now you're taking dumb risks to avoid an execution.
[ ] A Military Scientist on the run. You were working on a very hush-hush project, but when you finally put together the pieces of what you were working on you had to get out. You've since been labelled a traitor and they will want to silence you if they can find you.
[ ] A Former Member of Organized Crime. Things were going well, you were made and your life seemed set. Then things went wrong, lines were crossed, and you need out and a fresh start.

Just thinking about all of it almost makes it too much to sleep.

Thankfully, this is a really nice bed.

So hopefully this is a decent start. Will be fleshing out character voice more in the next few updates as becomes more defined. Next update will give a few more defining options on what choices picked here actually mean (ex. Do you need money to pay off debts, pay a relative's medical bills, buy something specifically important to your character, etc).

For setting went something a bit more like New Century Zero or Fuzors but with a lot of left over feelings from past wars where a far less peaceful solution was reached and tensions in some areas remain quite high. City name was made up because couldn't find something that fit enough and location was chosen most to handle it is isolated and running away to skip town won't really be an option.

Also there is going to be some loose stats for your character that will be given out when done with creation. Mostly going to be playing very loose with the Genesys system (mostly only using one or two dice rolls to resolve stuff). Why that system? Because feel like like it will be easier for me to work with than percentages. I promise I'm not going to give out trap options or have one bad result completely kill the character, but there will be risky options at times and failure is something that can happen and cause setbacks.

As for the crossover elements? Well some character choices might give more hints than others but it will be found out in due time.

I apologize if these notes from me have been mostly inane rambling.

Also known as the "Dark Continent" and occasionally the "Shattered Continent" is home to the Guylos Union, former Guylos Empire. As a site of constant fighting and where the the final and most bloody days of the warring period of Planet Zi's history, much of the continent is now desolated with many of its natural resources depleted. The Helic Republic also maintains holdings from the war.
New Daímonas City -Despite being located near the treacherous series of ashen valleys so notorious for sending travelers to an early grave that it became known as the Devil's Maze, New Daímonas City has become one of the most prosperous cities on Nyx. This has to do with becoming a center of trade and entertainment despite it's own lack of resources. This Helic Republic city hosts numerous events including the legendary Daímonas Grand Tournament, the only Zoids Battle Commission approved tournament to allow no holds barred fighting and allow competition until a Zoid is demolished.
Also known as the "Central Continent." Home to the Helic Republic and also the current location of the world headquarters for the Zoids Battle Commission.
A large and prosperous continent that was once the site of numerous bloody battles of Planet Zi's long wars. The Helic Republic still holds significant territory, occupying the majority of the continent. However smaller nations also find their home there. While the Guylos Empire once had significant holdings in Europa, after the Helic Republic's victory the majority of those were handed over to allied nations.
An international organization that regulates all Zoids combat and has their hand in almost all Zoids related to industry. They monitor the globe with armed satellites capable of launching a robotic judge to any recognized Zoids competition.
A democratic republic founded shortly before Planet Zi became engulfed in war. They survived those tumultuous times and emerged victories over their many enemies. Post war they helped form the Zoids Battle Commission and shape the world of today.
Formerly the Guylos Empire, the chief rival of the Helic Republic and instigator of global conflicts. However after their defeat, the Helic Republic helped raise their one time enemy into a more noble and proper state. While they have lost the majority of their holdings and military power, they are now a more respected member of the international community.

This quest is using a simplified version of the Genesys RPG system. Majority of actions and conflicts will be resolved in one roll. For those unfamiliar with the system, the main mechanic is have a die pool consisting of positive die (generated from characteristics and skills) and negative die (difficulty of task established by GM or by the characteristics/skills of the target). Die generate Success vs Failure where higher amount determines if action succeeds and potentially level of success, Advantage vs Threat where higher amount determines potential side effects of rolls, and Triumph versus Despair where both also count as a Success and Failure respectively but more importantly cause critical success or failures.

[X] For lack of a better term, an Ancient Zoidian. Plenty of corporations and governments would be willing to dissect you if that's what it took to unlock ancient technology that you don't even remember. You can't end up a lab rat.

Another Pheist RP, and it's Zoids? This should be interesting.

Oh hell's yes.

I am unbelievably hyped for a Zoids quest. The number of good Zoids stories is depressingly insufficient.

EDIT: Ooh! I wonder if Rev Raptor will be an option....

I'm looking forward to seeing how this plays out. Though I'm a little uncertain on what kind of benefits each background may give us. I went with "Ancient Zoidian" on the off chance we might somehow end up with a "junk" ZOID with a Black Box and jumpstart an evolution.

Alternatively, would "Military Scientist" allow us to develop our own upgrades and weapon packages for whatever ZOIDs we end up using?

[X] For lack of a better term, an Ancient Zoidian. Plenty of corporations and governments would be willing to dissect you if that's what it took to unlock ancient technology that you don't even remember. You can't end up a lab rat.

[X] You need connections.

[X] A Royal Heir. There are enough people that you know who'd string you up to add to the festivities. They might even try to make it part of the 'reenactment'. And you refuse to die as part of their spectacle. You know you're meant for something greater.

[X] A Former Member of Organized Crime. Things were going well, you were made and your life seemed set. Then things went wrong, lines were crossed, and you need out and a fresh start.

[X] What they wrongly call a Cultist. Being religious is already informally frowned by some, many of the hated kings and emperors of the past claimed divine right. But ignorant officials have labelled your faith too dangerous to allow.

Also wow on 18 votes, real glad to have gotten that many. Thank you all for voting.

Update should be out in roughly 24 hours, potentially earlier.

Edit : Also...
*snip* Alternatively, would "Military Scientist" allow us to develop our own upgrades and weapon packages for whatever ZOIDs we end up using?

Will probably go over what the planned starting bonuses/problems options are for the backgrounds later after you get what the Ancient Zoidian ones are. Also there is a good chance will encounter people with the backgrounds of royal heir, cultist, military scientist, or former criminal at some point.

An Ancient as a Modern Gladiator Day 0.1
In your panic, it takes you a few minutes to realize the source of all that screeching and blaring is the alarm clock. In that time, you trip and fall on the floor having become entangled in blankets. It seems that every nicety of the bedding has to be compensated by the alarm. You'll need to try to fix that later.

Well, oversleeping is not going to be an issue.

You get ready for the day and check yourself in the mirror before heading out. Yep, you look like…

(Choose one)
[ ] A completely normal young adult human male
[ ] A completely normal young adult human female

… and not a member of an ancient died out race who was found in some sort of stasis as a child in a recently unearthed ruin. Which is probably not how you should describe yourself if asked. Best case would be they think you're crazy. As long as you don't give them a reason otherwise, you're just a poor pilot from a poor, border village. And..

(Choose one)
[ ] Hopefully anyone sticking their head out there to ask will run into the same hostility towards outsiders that you did. An old, retired soldier did take you in but everyone else would of rather seen you kicked out to the wastes. They hopefully don't remember enough about you to sell you out. But a good portion of that town gave you a reason to be paranoid.
[ ] Your adoptive parents and friends should verify that if asked. You might of had your enemies back home, but hopefully anyone digging would encounter your family first and stop shortly after? No need to get too paranoid.
[ ] No one back home is the type to sell you out, right? Happily adopted, but people rarely brought it up and it's not like that would be a dark secret on its own. Worrying about someone selling you out is probably just paranoia.

Not that you don't have reasons to be constantly looking over your shoulder. The ruins you were found in got chopped apart and sold pretty quickly, it was practically gone before anyone official even got a chance to look at it. A couple of con men managed to dupe the mayor and made off like bandits. Made the ruins themselves a bitter topic to most of the town. But that didn't stop people from ever digging into them further.

A few years later, a group of people did come around asking and seemed to have an idea that maybe certain things should of existed in the ruin. Like odd pieces of technology or maybe something like a human being. Seeing that the ruin they came for had been taken apart, they didn't stay too long. But…

(Choose one)
[ ] You were spooked by the fact that people were looking for you. These people were armed and well equipped and while they left empty handed then, you can't imagine they aren't still searching. Maybe not for you, but anything Ancient Zoidian that they can find. They paid obscene amounts to take what scraps were left in the ruins and the way they pulled out cash or tapped their weapons when they brought up looking for further leads stuck with you.
[ ] You spent most of that time as their subject. Your nature was leaked to them and suddenly you were whisked away to a lab they promptly set-up. They did some examinations and asked several inane questions. You had your blood drawn a lot for further testing. You were asked to identify various pictures of ruins and the like. Thankfully just enough of a fuss was kicked up that they had to leave you behind when they finally left. But you feel if they had come with one or two more Zoids then that would of been different.
[ ] When they left, you went with them. You were an idiot and didn't think to fight it more. It took a few years before you managed to escape. They poked and prodded you. You don't remember how many drugs they injected you nor how many times they drew your blood. The stitches from some of their examinations have healed away, but you haven't forgotten how many times those happened. Questions and images got drilled into your head during their "tests" and your lack of answers or explanations infuriated them. You can't go back. You refuse to go back.

It still gives you nightmares. Only "good thing" was that it prompted you to learn more about your heritage. Not that that's been too helpful outside of the occasional humbling. The Ancient Zoidians were master Zoids engineers and pilots while also possessing a slew of supernatural abilities. Outside of the occasional sense of deja vu you get when looking at pictures of archaeological sites or the relics found in them, you really only have one trick. You…

(Choose one)
[ ] Have enhanced senses. Nothing better than an actual sensors and cities become a bit overwhelming with it, but it still helps. Definitely helps you find or avoid people.
[ ] Can sort of communicate with Zoids? It's hard to explain. Like you can kind of tell what they want more and they tend to warm up to you faster? It's weird, but helps with piloting and simple maintenance.
[ ] Can hypnotize someone. Less impressive than it sounds since it is exhausting to do and wears off almost instantly and half the time they remember they were messed with.
[ ] Have telekinesis. It isn't strong enough to lift or push a person and you have to concentrate to do so, but it still handy.

Which is still really impressive but you can't really compare it to the miracles an Ancient Zoidan is said to perform. You don't really get a chance to use it too much though since you try to keep a low profile. Have to be subtle after all. Never know who's watching. After all, you swear you've seen a uniform matching those that came to your village. It's a bit hard to mistake when it's a...

(Choose one)
[ ] Zoids Battle Commission officer uniform. Maybe you didn't fully recognize them when you were a kid, but they're pretty obvious now. They're everywhere.
[ ] Helic Republic officer uniform. Maybe you didn't fully recognize them when you were a kid, but they're pretty obvious now. They're practically everywhere.
[ ] Bleith Republic uniform. Too tiny to of ever heard of as a kid, but they've become a bit bigger since then. Thankfully still small enough that you can avoid them though.
[ ] Arcadia Kingdom officer uniform. You actually had to spend time looking up who they were. Not many people have ever heard of them. Thankfully as one of the few constitutional monarchies left, they don't really appear too far from their borders.
[ ] Guylos Union uniform. Still blamed for the wars no matter how long its been or how different their government is. But they strive to be considered a military power, even if they'd never be able to cross their boarders.
[ ] ZOITEC employee uniform. As one of the most prosperous Zoids manufacturers, they're all over the world. Kind of hard not to recognize their logo.
[ ] ZI-ARMS employee uniform. As one of the most prosperous Zoids manufacturers, they're all over the world. Kind of hard not to recognize their logo.
[ ] Mystery that's been seared into your memories. No one recognizes it and you couldn't find it when you searched. It's terrifying, but they probably know more about you than you know about them.

You almost bolted out of the city when that happened. It would have been easy to run. But you can't. You need the money. You really need the money. If this was any less urgent, you would skip town. But you can't wait. Not when..

(Choose one)
[ ] The auction is at the end of the festival. If you never saw that flyer, you would of been fine. But you spotted it and you recognized it. An Ancient Zoidian artifact being sold. It looks like what you came out of and its markings match those from the ruin you were in. It has enough decorations and engravings people have been treating it as an art piece. Just one glance and you knew you needed it even if you still don't know why.
[ ] The auction is at the end of the festival. If you never saw that flyer, you would of been fine. But you spotted it and you recognized it. A set of tablets from a ruin. Treated as a curiosity and a nice piece for a museum or some idiot's private collection. You weren't really able to read the writing as much as it screamed in your head. Barely coherent but you got warnings of danger. You can't let whatever it is fall into the wrong hands.
[ ] There's been so much false alarms and close calls. You're jumping at shadows and you can't live like this anymore. A ride to another country isn't cheap and you're id isn't completely above the board in the event someone did a close inspection. So you need to make sure you can get safely smuggled out somewhere more remote and away from all of this. A fresh start to throw anyone off your trail.
[ ] *Cough cough cough.* … That. Okay, no blood this time. Yay. You're not sure why, but you've been feeling worse and worse for a long time. Ancient Zoidian is pretty much human but there's differences or maybe village doctors are just not that great. You need help and you need an expert able to handle any abnormalities whose willing to be discreet. Someone better than the average back alley doctor and that costs money.
[ ] Your only family is on the line. If it was just anyone from the village, then you'd probably not care this much. But someone that raised you? Operations aren't cheap and neither is transporting a patient from a village to a city safely. You can't wait to just get the money through a normal job.

… So time to earn that money. Or rather set yourself to earn that money. Preferably without winding up in a hospital bed… Or the morgue. Morgue is also bad. Or dissection lab… Okay, new topic.

It is still early enough, your alarm made sure of that. Plenty of time to get breakfast.

(Choose one)
[ ] There's a buffet downstairs. It will mostly be the other desperate pilots hired for this insanity, but might have one or two other people. And it might be worth meeting some of the people who you'll potentially be fighting beside.
[ ] You spotted a cafe not a block from here. It looked nice and it shouldn't be too pricey. It is probably too early to be getting any tourists either so it should be mostly locals and other people involved in the "festivities."
[ ] No… On second thought, you should probably skip breakfast. If you want to win over a tournament official and get any of the good spots, you're going to want to get there before anyone else. And preferably get a chance to talk to someone one on one.

So thinking might have free time to get writing done early and announcing that is a guarantee that things will go wrong. Good to remember that fact. Probably going to try and edit this a bit more tomorrow. Hopefully just grammar and nothing like look at this after sleep and wonder what I was doing.

So, uhh, who else is tempted by maximum trauma?

I'm a horrible person, but I want to. Old Soldier, Experiments... Not sure which faction would be the worst? A big one with a lot of resources, a megacorp, or the mystery one that you know nothing about? Dangerous tablets sounds like a future plot hook, but being sick and/or having sick family sounds like more trauma.

Rather tempted to go with being able to talk to Zoids though, the one comfort among a sea of trauma. Also hearing the screaming hatred of abused or otherwise malicious Zoids! :V

@Pheist Are we voting for char pic or do you have something already lined up for both options?

Don't have anything at moment for char pic or description. Was going to try and figure that out for next update (next update will also include name). If people want to start discussing possible appearances and finding pictures now, then feel free. Makes things easier for me.
