2173-Q2

[X] Answer them in whole or part.
-[X] The future, as always.
-[X] No Paragon Industries personnel have been deployed anywhere save our facilities on Mindoir, nor will they be in the near future, with the exception of our planned facilities on Elysium.
-[X] I have not made a decision at this time concerning selling military hardware outside of Systems Alliance.
-[X] We all have roles to play to secure our future, and right now mine is in the lab.
-[X] No comment.

"Miss Shepard, what have you brought to the competition?" One bland, toothpaste-smiling man calls out.

"The Future, as always," you reply with a smile, hopefully that didn't come off to arrogant.

"Is it true that you are sending armed forces to Altahe?" A rather aggressive looking black woman demands.

"No Paragon Industries personnel have been deployed anywhere save our facilities on Mindoir, nor will they be in the near future, with the exception of our planned facilities on Elysium," you respond trying to hide your confusion. The hell? Isn't that the world Liara is on? Is there a reason I'd be sending people there? She hired her own security. "Beyond the obvious temporary security work here," you add just in case. Some of you legal people had reviewed Covering Your Ass 101 with you.

"Will you be selling weapons to other races?" Asks a young man of Asian descent who seems somewhat familiar.

"I have not made a decision at this time concerning selling military hardware outside of Systems Alliance." you answer firmly.

"A lot of people thought you a hero when you fought off the Batarians on Mindoir, why haven't you enlisted in the Alliance?" The questions keep coming, this one you didn't even notice the source of.

"We all have roles to play to secure our future, and right now mine is in the lab," you return confidently.

"With the weapons you can build, Humanity is stronger than ever. Do you think we should take the war to the Batarians before they strike again?"

"No comment." you do you best to keep you answer neutral. Part of you really does want to say that yes, the SA should take Batarians out now before they hurt anyone else, but you realize that this isn't the best place for that sort of thing. Nor is it exactly a good plan.

Maybe you ought to do a proper interview with a major network? It might cut down on some of this stuff. Might be best to find one that's at least neutral, if not friendly though.

Hmm... an interview?
[ ] Sure, toss it on the queue of things to do.
[ ] Nah

Clearing things up
After you placate the ravenous hounds of the media (for now at least). Alenko address you again, "Sorry about that ma'am, is seems that media attention one of the prices of fame."

"It's fine, I'm just going to have to learn to live with it."

"Sometimes that's all you can do, ma'am. On a more business related note I'd just like to double-check one of the requests, you made for the presentation," Alenko pauses, "I've got a request for an orbital drop path for the demonstration, so I assume that you want show off a drop. However, I don't have anything about the dropping vessel, we would like to get that vessel cleared as well."

"Oh, yeah," you paused confused for a half second there, "I'm not dropping from a ship. I was going to have one of the Tigers, the IFV I brought that is, go up under its own power and drop back down. I was fairly sure I had requested that all correctly."

Alenko manages to control his shock, "Well if it can do that this request makes sense. I'd initially thought someone had gotten sloppy and forgot something. But it looks like this is all in order. Unless you have any questions?"

"No, I'm good for now."

The Grand City of Moscow
You use the trip to the convention center to look out at the city. It's very different from what you're used to. You grew up on a farm and have spent the better part of your teenage years running a hi-tech company. Some parts of Moscow are definitely 22nd century work. Others make you think of fairy tales. Saint Basil's Cathedral catches your eye for more than a few moments. It's so colorful. Maybe you should consider getting some murals and colorful art for the PI complex?

The more or less literal "center" of Moscow Red Square is packed with people, Moscow these days has 23 million people living in it. Part of your mind wanders off considering the engineering challenges that supporting such a population must have. You wonder whether introducing aircars helped at all, or if it just made more of a mess.

The Kremlin is a rather interesting sight as well, though you only get an outside view. Looking carefully you think you can see the flicker of an active kinetic barrier, as well as one or two troops wearing legionary power armor in the New Russian Federation's colors.

You finally reach the Kremlin Palace. Damaged badly in a terrorist bombing a hundred years ago, it was rebuilt, slightly larger and with modern upgrades, but keeping its Greco-Roman design.

Here is where tomorrow you'll be showing off your IFV at a rather lovely booth you had marketing cook up. The two days after will be practical demonstrations at Alabino Tank Biathlon proving grounds. The New Russian Federation has graciously provided simulated targets, an obstacle course and other resources so that the contestants can show off. Your slot is part way through the last day. Which is probably good thing, don't want to embarrass the other companies too much.

I brought a spare
Setting up the booth goes well. Brian even chooses to stick around and help out even though it's not the most interesting of tasks. Alenko stays back out of the way most of the time, but he is quite helpful in coordinating with the building staff.

Not to long after your team puts the demonstration Tiger into place. You see someone familiar. He's totally here to blow up one of my Tigers isn't he? "Hello again General," you say presenting your friendly business woman smile.

"It's good to see you here Ms Shepard," replies General Marc Decroix he looks at the Tiger for a moment, "I've heard many things about your company."

"Good things, I'd hope?" You ask.

"Good things from my troops. Some other companies are a little miffed about you and Hahne-Kedar taking so much of the market. They're more inclined to be annoyed at HK for snapping up the licensing deal with you so quickly. Unfortunately Humanity's enemies are less than pleased. You seem to have your security well in hand though," he says as he gestures at the Legionaries in PI colors standing guard nearby.

He studies the Tiger for a few moments more, "If this IFV of yours is as impressive as Paragon Industry's last few offerings I would not be surprised if you steal the show. Continue at this rate and every major piece equipment the Systems Alliance Military owns will be a Paragon Industries product."

"I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that you want to... What did you say 'get the measure' of the Tiger?" You say a bit of humor creeping into your voice.

"Indeed."

You sigh, "Well it's a good thing I brought a spare."

"Excellent, I'll see you in three days time Ms. Shepard, if not sooner."

"Was that General Decroix?" Brian asks awed.

"Yes, yes it was. He likes to break my stuff." You reply. Brian's shocked expression is quite amusing.

Are you going to bill him for the Tiger?
[ ] Yes, totally, he breaks it he bought it, besides it's like a tradition now
[ ] No, sacrificing one Tiger is more than worth it to get the General's approval

IFV Competition Day 1
You spend your evening in the historic (and expensive) Four Seasons Hotel Moscow. It keeps most of it historic style, but has been updated with modem amenities.

The first day of the competition dawns sunny; the weather for the next day is estimated to be partially cloudy. The last day of the competition may have a little rain. And that might actually be accurate since Earth's weather patterns have been studied long enough that the weather prediction VIs are quite accurate.

In the convention center many booths have been setup, a few large ones like yours are for companies that brought IFV to compete, others are advertising equipment for IFVs either trying to get a larger company to license or buy them out, or to sell directly to the military.

What do you do?
[ ] Stay and man the booth, send some of your marketing minions to scout.
[ ] Scout around yourself.

Sales Plan
Sales Plan
2173-Q2

[X] Sure, toss it on the queue of things to do.
-[X] Have our people find an interviewer with a good reputation for honest unbiased reporting with the public. Tabloid journalism practitioners need not apply.
-[X] Have our people and family drill us with surprise and difficult questions before hand though for practice so we don't get caught off guard. Make sure we can answer without sounding like a politician. Likewise take time to consider 'hard hitting' questions we could be asked so we have a reply ready.

Your people begin their investigations. They'll get back to you in a few days.

GM's Note: We'll revisit this after the competition.

[X] Yes, totally, he breaks it he bought it, besides it's like a tradition now.
-[X] Make the price something non-monetary but amusing.

You prepare a bill for the general, charging him two pies for one of your Tiger IFVs. Sure, it's a nerdy math joke but you're a nerdy person.

[X] Stay and man the booth, send some of your marketing minions to scout.
-[X] If your people find anything notable or of interest then make some time to take a look while most folks are getting lunch.
-[X] Bring Brian if he's interested.

GM's Note: I'll be running a few events in parallel to try to streamline things. I've written them in the order they're happening.

You decide that is probably for the best if you stay at the booth, your minions, er employees, can scout just fine and if there is anything truly interesting, you can go out yourself to check it out. This not only saves you valuable time but allows you to stay in a fixed place so anyone looking for you to find you easily.

The first part of the morning goes well. You and your team answer questions, visitors take pictures and you get plenty of practice selling your newest product. Having taken the powered armor completion and been a partner in the new Gladius fighter, you get a lot of attention. Which winds up having you answer the same question several times over. You're totally going to bring a FAQ VI next time.

Brian is very helpful and understanding. You're a busy business woman and he's playing helpful boyfriend. He does take the opportunity to look around the competition. He's quite interested as he, "may be riding in one of these things one day". He does like yours best. Though his opinion is a little biased isn't it?

You feel you've done well. Between various customers from around the SA you've gotten orders for 19 Tiger IFVs.

Of interest among the orders is an order by Captain Anderson for a single Tiger. Apparently it will be useful for some "ongoing operations". He would like it as soon as possible.

Assorted Orders: 19 Tiger IFVs, due end of 2173-Q3. Unless you choose to refuse them.
[ ] Why wouldn't we sell them?
[ ] Delay by a quarter
[ ] Refuse the order for now

Intergalactic Relations
Its midway through the morning when what you expect will be the oddest of the encounters here occurs. You notice a few people both those wandering around and those in their booths staring. It takes you a few moments to get a good view.

It would seem somehow that a pair of Turians got an invitation to the competition. They are both well dressed as far as you can tell such things and seem to be wearing the insignia of the Turian Hierarchy. You aren't entirely sure of their ranks, but assuming that the more decoration one has the higher the rank, you'd take a guess that one is the other's aide.

The two Turians are getting everything from shocked stares to hostile glares. Which doesn't bother them at all as far as you can tell.

The more decorated of the pair notices your booth and locks on with laser-like precision, and the pair begins to head your way.

WTF? Turians here?
[ ] Begin paranoid staring!
[ ] It's odd they're here, you're definitely curious.
[ ] In the spirit of intergalactic relations, you'll just ignore that they're Turians.
[ ] Write in?

Scouting Report
From one of your scout's reports:
So it looks like it's a PI product that's framed most of this competition. But it's not the Legionary or the Arc-Reactor. The Pilum has shaped the competition the most. Having a missile that can one shot most tanks and IFVs means that you've got to make an IFV that won't be insta-killed on the changing battle field. We've been seeing AMS systems, E-War and stealth in one form or another all over the place. Below are a few of the highlights:

HK's got an IFV that at most could be generously called the Mako MKII. It's basically a fairly linear upgrade to the Mako. Only real unique elements are a E-War suite and reactive armor plating. Nothing we couldn't do but it might help the thing survive a few Pilums, maybe.

Devlon Industries has a hovercraft for their entry. It's got fairly good maneuverability and has some pretty high quality environmental protections. On top of that it's got a ballistic AMS. They claim it can take out up to 7 missiles per second and any attacker would need to fire more than that to get through.

Rosenkov Materials has joined up with Ariake to produce their own IFV. Most of it's bog standard IFV stuff. Except the Holographic Optical Cloaking. The HOC can be run for 8 minutes in "standard battlefield conditions" before it needs to be off for 16, but that doesn't need to be consecutive (though given time it does need maintenance to keep up that level of performance). According to their sales pitch it's totally invisible in the EM spectrum while the HOC is on. They're really the only competitor who has something we don't.

A minor company "Shifting Developments" is offering tech that allows one to use ammo mods on vehicle scale weapons. Specialized rounds for vehicles aren't anything new, but this takes the benefits of the infantry scale ammo mods and applies them to vehicles. It does take a bit to swap the mods, but they have a video showing it done by a trained guy with an omni-tool in about 15 seconds. They have successfully scaled up AP rounds, anti-biological rounds and inferno rounds. As well as making a custom HEAP mod that wouldn't work on infantry scale weapons. Last but not least they have a warp round mod that I think they developed quickly in response to the crazy shield levels that an Arc-Reactor can give. It's got a little less polish than the other mods but it's still fully functional.

Finally Lucca's R&D Co, has made some fancy stealth armor material. Using the optical properties of a new metamaterial the armor will scatter any incoming light from radio frequency to violet, this makes most active EM or laser sensors and target designators useless. It also blurs the outline of the armored object and makes a fair number of passive sensors produce a "fuzzy" image. To top that off the material will blunt the effects of lasers! On the other hand it's not very impressive vs physical strikes.

Do you want to go check any of these out? Feel free to add a write in of what you intend to do when visiting.
[ ] Go see what HK's up to.
[ ] Hover craft are neat let's go see that.
[ ] Might as well go view the only real competition.
[ ] Shifting Developments' tech sounds interesting.
[ ] Stealth and anti-laser effects sound promising.
[ ] Nah nothing to see, stay at your booth.

Member of the Alliance
Despite unifying under the SA most of the original member nations still maintain their own armed forces. Out in the colonies all one really sees is the Armed Forces of the Systems Alliance. Here on Earth many old military traditions are still going strong. Something the Russian Lieutenant General before you makes fairly obvious. Two New Russian Federation soldiers stand behind him wearing Legionary power armor.

"Ah, Rebecca Shepard the young lady who revolutionized infantry warfare and a proud defender of her people. I am Lieutenant General Alexei Sidorov," he introduces himself offering a handshake.

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Lieutenant General. How can I help you today?" You say shaking his hand.

"The New Russian Federation has found the powered armor you developed an excellent addition to its forces. We believe that your IFV would also be a fitting addition. We would like to reserve 360 Tigers so that we can see how best to integrate them in to our battle plans. I have little doubt we'll require more after we have determined how best to use them." He says adding a smile at the end.

New Russian Federation: 360 Tiger IFVs due

GM's Note: So that took longer than intended. Also the guy who standardized the spelling of Lieutenant is an ass. He (or she) is so going on my time travel list, right after the guy responsible for standard screwdrivers. At least the omnipresence of translators means I don't have to do to any shenanigans with the Russian speaker(s). If I've made any errors let me know. There's also a minor reference in there. Get it and I'll give you guys 25RP. No RP for the math joke, but it does have a two layered meaning. Hopefully the formatting doesn't bug out (again).

Interstellar Friendship & Updates

[X] Why wouldn't we sell them?
-[X] Leave one of the Tigers for Captain Anderson after competition, he seemed to need it fast and you don't have worry about transporting it back.

The orders are carefully filed. You let Captain Anderson know that he can pick up one of your demonstration models after the competition. He thanks you and Paragon Industries for your prompt service.

[X] 2173-Q3

Lieutenant General Sidorov has taken up a great deal of next quarter's production with his order, but well first come first served right? Anyway it's a lot of profit for the next quarter.

[X] It's odd they're here, you're definitely curious.
-[X] Still, they are as much people as anyone else; it wouldn't do to treat them worse for who they are or be too prying.

You manage to covertly get SPC Alenko's attention and flick your eyes towards the Turians advancing in your direction. Your raised eyebrows merely get a shrug in response. Well if he doesn't feel there's anything to worry about then you won't worry. Still it is interesting, this competition is for the SA. Something is going on.

You do your best to subtly keep your employees on task and after the their initial surprise at seeing Turians here they continue work as normal. Your people have been dealing with aliens due to expanding into the Citadel Markets.

The Turian's calm orderly march would mark them as military if it wasn't obvious from their uniforms. They stop before your booth and spend a few moments looking at the graphics, signs and display screens that show off the Tiger. The more decorated of the two wearing muted purple "armor", directs a comment toward the one you assume is an aide. The aide, in the same uniform, make a few notes on an omnitool.

"The Turian Hierarchy is lucky you weren't in business before the Hig- First Contact War" The leader finally says. Interestingly you translator has given the Turian a female voice. You can't really tell the difference at first glance, but you assume that its working properly.

"Huh," you'd never really though about it like that, your tech would have made the first contact war very different. "Probably would have made it far more bloody," you conclude; with a tech advantage that big the System Alliance would have been far more willing to press the war.

"Possibly. I am Colonel Sindal Rynus, Turian Hierarchy diplomatic corps, primary liaison to the Systems Alliance Military." she introduces herself. She's very formal sounding.

"Rebecca Shepard, CEO Paragon Industries," you return, "But I assume you already knew that."

"Hard not to if you pay any attention to the Human media," she says, "Your arrival wound up on the news and you were already 'The Hero of Mindoir'. Not to mention you and your company's work on the Systems Alliance's new powered armor and fighter craft. I would have to be absolutely terrible at my job If I didn't know who you are."

"I suppose at this point I'd normally be trying to sell you on my latest products, but with the new arms sale legislation that's being voted on soon I'm not really sure that would even matter." You observe.

"My acquisition budget doesn't cover things like IFVs, nor am I in part of the Supplies division. That legislation also will sadly for its initial developers do far less than they hoped. That is assuming it passes. There are a few ways to get exemptions built into the law. One of which is to have a review board, mostly made up of Systems Alliance military personal, determine if an item may be sold outside of the Systems Alliance. Considering the current diplomatic strategy of the Systems Alliance, sales to any of the Council races are most likely going to be allowed with in reason. The other Citadel races might have a harder time though."

That's news to you. Maybe it would help if you paid more attention to the political scene? Or hire someone to do that so you can reserve you time for useful things, like researching. "So then why are you here?" You probe carefully.

"The Turian Hierarchy is interested to see if yet another product that flips over the metaphorical Tadjal table of Galactic power gets demonstrated at this competition." she answer bluntly, "from what I see that is going to be the case. I look forwards to seeing the demonstration at the proving grounds. Good day Ms. Shepard."

"Good day, Colonel Rynus." You say.

Colonel Rynus and her aide move off at a quickly pace into the crowds. She leaves you feeling in part like you got ran over and like you missed something. Meh, couldn't have been a big deal. Besides she seemed nice enough, if a bit stiff.

Codex/Turians/Games/BoardGames/Tadjal: Tadjal is a traditional Turian board game that focuses on strategy. It is often called "Turian Chess", but Tadjal is more complicated then standard chess. Many pieces can move in different ways, but only under select conditions. Much like pawns in chess can double move, but only on their first move. There are also game board variants that are meant to represent different terrain as well as a set of classic scenarios to play. Tadjal is considered an excellent training tool for strategic thinking and is often played by the Turian Hierarchy's generals, admirals and Primarchs.

[X] Stealth and anti-laser effects sound promising.

It's lunch time. A good chance to get out, get some food with your boyfriend and poke at something. Your minions should be able to handle the show for a bit. You and Brian head out towards a food vendor he notice when he went out to take a look at things. They aren't selling anything special and you opt for a sandwich while Brian grabs some pizza.

Over lunch at a nearby table you chat about the competition. Brian has been able to get a better look at things then you, even if he's spent a fair amount of time chatting with Specialist Alenko. You also spend a bit wondering what sort of operation Captain Anderson needs a Tiger for. While the obvious raid against a pirate base is suggested, you have fun taking turns suggesting increasingly silly operations. You kinda doubt Captain Anderson needs it for an operation that involves fighting robot zombies on the Presidium tower or to save Omega from the return of the Protheans.

Eventually talk turns back to the competition. "I don't have much time before I've got to get back, but there were a few things I wanted to look at. Only really have time for one though." You start.

"Which ones? I've managed to get a look at a few things. Maybe I could help narrow the options down?" Brian asks.

"Well there's the cloaking IFV, the ammo mod tech for vehicle scale weapons, and some odd stealth material made by Lucca's R&D Co." You list the booths that interested you the most.

"I did get to see the stealth stuff. Its weird. You can see the other IFV at the trials if you go and the stealth stuff the more interesting of the other two to go look at." Brian says thoughtfully as he taps a finger against his cheek.

"Sounds like a plan then." You say as you stand up from the table.

You follow Brian through the crowds to Lucca's R&D Co's booth. When you arrive Brian speaks up, "See look at it! Stare straight at it and it looks kinda blurry and half there. But If you move the blur pattern changes. Be annoying as hell to deal with in a fight. Might even spoof a computer a bit."

You can indeed see what Brian's talking about. The booth has a block coated in the material sitting for people to look at. It's getting a fair bit of attention as people take pictures or move around it watching as the blur pattern changes.

One of Lucca's R&D Co's Sales personal uses Brian's observations to jump in, "Indeed, in tests the Arcane Blur Stealth Armor has been shown to confuse the simpler VIs of smaller autonomous units, mainly small drones and missiles, reducing their average hit rate by 20%. A similar miss chance also occurs in unaided humans attempting to target the armor."

"It also disrupts active radar and lidar as well as reducing the effect of laser fire if I heard correctly?" you ask. Might as well get the sales person to give the whole sales spiel. If you had to guess the armor uses metamaterials to alter the path light takes by manipulated the index of refraction. Its different then the active camo Conrad was working on. Maybe you could work them together some how?

"Quite right. The material will cause any active sensor using radio waves to violet light to fail as the sensor will not produce a return. The same effect also distributes the power of a laser over a wider area making laser weapons far less effective. Though this is more relevant on the starship scale as lasers aren't used in surface battles." The salesperson continues cheerfully.

Well lasers used to be mainly a starship weapons You've changed that, not that many people know that. Yet.

"The stealth doesn't work as well if it gets damaged, right? And this stuff's not as strong as standard armor." Brian asks helping out with plan 'Interrogate the salesperson'.

The salesperson nods at this, "That is a failing of most any physical stealth effect, damage will reduce its effectiveness. While the Arcane Blur is less able to take physical hits it can be incorporated as the outer layer of a composite armor. In addition, given the modern increase in kinetic barriers power, armor is less relevant for its capacity to deal with physical hit. Armors that can offer some other benefit are far more useful."

"Sounds interesting. How much are you selling it for?"

"Currently we are selling samples for testing at 200,000 credits per sample. However, Lucca's R&D Co. is primarily a research company and we are looking for a buyer that either want to license the technology for production or buy it outright. Currently we have the technology estimated at 150 million credits."

Archaeological Update
Late in the evening Liara call to update you on the dig's progress.

"So," you begin, "a funny thing happened. When I landed on Earth some reporter asked me if I was sending armed forces to Altahe. Which confused me. So I have to ask, is there something going on there I missed?"

Liara blinks for a moment thinking. "Well there was a pirate raid."

"A pirate raid?" you ask trying to get her to continue.

"Yes. Pirates often raid archaeological dig attempting to steal artifacts. As an archaeologist on the edges of civilized space they're something one just has to learn to deal with. I've had to fight a few raids in the past. Given the security force available the raid was repulsed quickly. With no real harm. It did help that the natives of Altahe built their cities to keep out the wind." Liara says calmly, "I believe they decided we weren't worth the trouble after I smashed their leaders head with his own bioticly weighted gun."

You now have the mental image of Liara peacefully digging up artifacts going into a berserk rage when someone tries to break them. Well at least she can take care of herself. You do recall her having commando training. You'd just never guess from they way she acts normally.

"Well then outside of pirate raids hows it going?"

Liara informs you about what they've found so far. It's not much as they are still working on the iron age settlement. Though they have found Prothean artifacts that the natives had dug up in the past. Most are damaged in one war or another. 50,000 years have taken their toll on the artifacts. One is rather intact, though it doesn't work for some as of yet undetermined reason.

Offer more security for the dig?
[ ] Sure
[ ] Nah

Mr. Out of Gas
Mr. Goto has also sent his preliminary report on Laurence Freeman:

They guy is who he says he is. It would seem that at one point he pissed of the wrong person and has not managed to keep a job as a political analyst since. He is quite good at his job, but something just keeps coming up and gets him fired or let go.

We could hire him, but that might cause Laurence's former boss to cause trouble for us. The boss, Donathan Ravol, is quite well off and has ties to the Terra Firma Party. It sounds harsh, but there are other political analysts. Laurence Freeman maybe far more trouble then he's worth.

What to do with Laurence Freeman?

GM's Note: So as noted I was delayed by Xcom: The Long War mod. So here's an extra long (~2405 word) update. Also as a bonus there's 3 things in there that'll get me to give you bonus points. One's a hold over from the last update. The other is a new reference. The last is a secret but it's not a reference. Also as a general hint that may or may not apply to all the bonuses: the owner of Lucca's R&D Co. is a total nerd and likes RPGs.

Do you want to buy?
[X] Yes. Adds +100 points to "The Invisible Man" tech and you can add Arcane Blur stealth armor to anything you build for +20% to production and cost.

Buying things on the corporate scale isn't a simple matter of handing someone money and getting stuff. There are contracts to review and paper work to handle. Lucca's R&D Co has sent your legal team the contract for the deal. Once they have gone over it, things ought to get resolved quickly.

You walk back to your booth with Brian grinning a bit.

"Oh, I recognize that grin." Brian says amused.

"You do?" you ask, cheeks reddening a little.

"Yep! That's your 'I have a new toy' grin. You're going to be distracted by that new stuff for a while aren't you?" he teases.

"Well it is pretty cool stuff isn't it? You could do all sorts of neat things with it!" you say excited.

"Worst case you could use it for novelty paper weights," Brian jests.

You roll your eyes, "Yes that's it, Paragon Industries: Energy, Arms and Paper Weights. I suppose it's better than quills and sofas."

"Well you do have to do something with the products that fail quality testing."

After your legal team goes over then contract and negotiations finish with Lucca's R&D Co. you sign the contract with you bio-metrics and okay the payment. Shortly thereafter a representative delivers an OSD with the Arcane Blur Stealth Armor's specifications as well as the display piece from the competition.

Offer more security for the dig?
[x] Sure- but only as additional funding.

You consider the situation at the dig for a moment. While the forces Liara has did manage to repulse the pirates, the pirates might come back in larger numbers. In addition, someone connected you to the dig. You haven't made any friends on the edge of civilized space, quite the opposite in fact. Offering more security might be a good idea.

"I'm thinking it might be a good idea to allocate extra funding to security. One of the Systems Alliance generals I know told me that some of the powers in that part of space weren't to happy with me. If a reporter can put figure out a connection between me and your dig others can too. So... do you think ten million would be enough?" You say to Liara

"Ten million!?" Liara exclaims, "That's more then what's needed! A million would be more reasonable. I not even sure it's needed in the first place. This planet is incredibly hard to fight on and the site is a fortress even if I'd rather we didn't fight anywhere near it."

"Eh, well I suppose..." you may have lost touch with the concept of 'a reasonable amount of money', "Well then...

How much are you offering?
[ ] take a million"
[ ] five million just in case."
[ ] take the ten million, after the dig you can return whatever is leftover."
[ ] Some other number?

What to do with Laurence Freeman?
[x] Hire him! (Laurence Freeman will lead a team of political analysts, who cost you 400k/quarter)

You call Laurence Freeman not too long after receiving Mr. Gato's report. "Hello again Mr. Freeman. Do you have a moment?"

"My schedule is quite free for the foreseeable future. Ms Shepard." Mr. Freeman informs you.

"Good, I've had my people take a look at your history and thought about it a bit and I've decided to offer you a job in your old profession."

"I am glad to hear that." he says with subdued happiness, "Though you'll forgive some trepidation on my part. I've had some otherwise promising jobs go sour, no doubt due to my former employers. Not that anything could be proven mind."

"I can understand that. Frankly though, screw your former boss and his political leanings. Even if I didn't believe in playing nice with others, Terra Firma is Earth first and I don't live on Earth now do I?"

"That is true Ms Shepard. Though may I recommend being careful how you say that sort of thing in public?" he chuckles, "The is some value in tact."

"I'll keep that in mind. I'll have HR get a hold of you at this number then?" you ask.

"That would be fine. I'll work with them to get a team up and running as fast as I can. I have a feeling that there will be lots of work to do."

Did you build the ISAR during 2173-Q2 and bring it for the Hadron Collider? (You still have until 2174-Q1 to do this)
[X] Yes

In addition to your other cargo you have brought the ISAR for the Hadron Collider. The rather unimpressively sized box is sent to the project with a couple of your security personal not long after you land. Your people return the next day with a letter of thanks and the agreed upon payment has been added to the Paragon Industries accounts. With any luck they'll discover something interesting.

How many Tigers did you build and bring to the competition?
[X] 4

You have built four "IFVs" for the IFV competition. You'll most likely be building may more in the future.

Mom and Dad
Your parents return to the hotel after another day of playing tourist for a late dinner with you and Brian. "So how did things go?" you mother asks.

"Pretty good we have almost all of next quarter's factory cycles spoken for already." you answer.

"That's quick, " you mother says.

"The power of a good reputation is not to be underestimated," your dad points out.

"Plus one of the companies there had a cool new toy that Revy bought." Brian adds in.

"Hey, it's also top of the line stealth armor, making it a perfectly reasonable purchase." you defend.

"And a step closer to having your own army of ninjas," your dad interjects.

"Is that even a good idea? Inverse ninja principle and all that." Brian asks.

"Sadly you have a point." you agree with you boyfriend.

"Ninja army plans aside, what do you plan to do tomorrow?" Your mom says, trying to steer the conversation away from you and you dad's brand of nerdy silliness.

"You should take the time to visit the city proper Revy. Moscow is a pretty neat place. All kinds of cool stuff to look at." your dad suggests.

"It might be a good idea to watch the other demonstrations." your mother offers.

"Wouldn't be much point of being at the Kremlin Palace, most people are going to be at the proving grounds for the next two days." Brian adds thoughtfully.

Day 2:
[ ] Watch your competitors. Maybe you'll get some ideas for your own presentation.
[ ] Visit the city.
-[ ] Visit some historical sites/museums.
-[ ] Be a tourist!

GM's Note: Eh so a short update, for some reason I thought it be longer. Shortest update I've done yet I think. Sorry for the delay I'll see about getting the next update out faster. Might even call the voting earlier then normal to make up for the last delay. It's just two voting items anyway. Anyway, we're almost past the competition! (I think) So we should be back to the regular quarterly fun in 2-3 updates. After I've processed the update for the next quarter, I'll be fiddling with the tech tree a bit. But I'll take the old votes in the spirit they were made so I don't think there will be any issues with the changes from that quarter. Only thing that'll cause a problem is the vote for frigates, and the planned splitting of ship techs from MAC techs. In which case I'll just treat them as one tech for that one vote. (Yay! legacy issues!)

[X] take a million"

… take a million. Use it to get some extra security. Better to be safe then sorry." you say.

"I shall do that then. I does seem a little excessive to me but I suppose I'm used to tight budgets and rather stingy grant money." Liara responds thoughtfully, "I think that covers anything I have to discuss. We might need to borrow some of your technical expertise later but for now things are good."

"Until next time then?"

"Until next time."

[X] Have your people record the minor presentations and the sales pitches of the IVF show. Show face at the presentations you have an interest in and make time to speak with any interesting new comers like the Vehicular Weapons Mod group that might be good to 'Sign Up'.
-[X] Brief our people manning the stall for us on any subtle advantages and edges the our product has over what we've seen.
-[X] Be prepared to be a measuring stick and if anyone is spiteful about it offer a chance of a competition between the two companies products after Revy presentation.
-[X] Be mindful of the upcoming Destruction Derby with the general. Make more effort to get good shots for our presentation that can be playing while we're doing our orbital drop. If our Drop Licence Allow us to drop into a cordoned off part of the convention site, do our presentation after stepping out after the drop.

After some thought you decide that going to all the presentations would be a waste of time. Your people can checkout any of the minor presenters. Hell the only interesting thing on today's agenda is Rosenkov Materials and Ariake Technologies' cloaking IFV. That's worth going to even if only to see something cool. Before that though you have a chance to check out the vehicular weapons mod guys especially as you're not wasting time at the presentations.

The Kremlin Palace is much emptier than before, most of the action having transitioned to the Alabino Tank Biathlon proving grounds. Manning the Shifting development's booth is a single older man who is watching a small holoscreen and providing commentary. His posture and bearing feel ex-military and you've been around enough such people that you are familiar with the signs.

"That's going to workout poorly in the field, good idea but poor execution" he says to the screen as you walk up.

You take a moment to look over the display. A looping movie shows a mod being cycled out quickly by a skilled tech, who looks to be the man before you. The movie also shows firing demonstrations of the mods on a 100mmx2.5m cannon as well as the resulting damage to the targets. In addition the booth displays a demonstration gun and a few mod kits.

"Oh, hello," the man says noticing you, "Sorry, no one's been by so I figured I'd watch some of the fun at Alabino. Captain Hwan of the Alliance's battlefield engineers, retired now obviously, and lead developer of the Vehicles Scale Ammo Mod technology."

"Rebecca Shepard, Paragon Industries." you introduce yourself.

"Really now? Though you looked familiar. I suppose we owe you thanks." He smiles, "Barrier strength going up has made everyone want a way increase the power of their guns. Custom rounds aren't anything new, but they're expensive and a logistical annoyance. We've gotten a few informal opening bids already. The more business savvy members of the team have started setting up something more formal."

"I'll admit that I'm interested too. Any chance I can get in on the bidding?" You ask.

"Sure, give me an extranet address. I'll have the relevant information forwarded to you. Anything else you want to know?" Captain Hwan replies.

"It looks like the mods would require a weapon designed to work with them. So any current weapons wouldn't be compatible." you observe looking over the demonstration pieces.

"Unfortunately current large-scale weapons just aren't designed to be modded like this so... yeah." he admits, "But I think the benefits are worth it. You might be able to modify existing weapons to take the mods it wouldn't be trivial, but you could do it. Anything else?"

"I think that's everything, thanks for your time."

"No problem, I'm looking forward to seeing Paragon Industies' IFV in action, good luck with the presentation."

The current highest offer is 500 million credits, but someone in Shifting Developments is looking to make a lot of money by playing the major companies off each other. Also there are a few details in the sales contract about keeping some of the employees on. How much are you willing to offer and how far will you go?

Beyond Sight
The stands at the proving grounds are packed with people from several different services and companies, you even think you see the Turians you meet earlier. The reason is obvious, they all want to see the cloaking system. Rosenkov and Ariake have produced a fine IFV and show it off well as it traverses the obstacle course and snipes its targets.

The thrusters got a bit of an upgrade over the Mako making it more maneuverable and it looks like it won't "drive like its operator is drunk at best". The main turret has a 165mm cannon and two supporting autocannon instead of the usual lighter machine gun. Other than that it's just an all around high quality IFV.

The cloaking system is the truly impressive part. The companies show it off in several ways including using it to evade missile fire, which gets some appreciative comments from the crowd. As with many forms of stealth, firing weapons will disable the stealth quickly. The system Rosenkov and Ariake have developed can handle a single shot, but doing so reduces the time remaining on the cloak by 7 minutes if a shot is fired with the cloak on. The system can be used in shorter bursts so it's not entirely useless in heavy combat. There don't seem to be any obvious flaws to the cloak, but the IFV is still there and will make tread marks, kick up dust and do other things to give away its position.

You use this opportunity to get a few passive scan with your omnitool. You've customized yours with few above-standard quality sensors for your tinkering and lab work. From the readings you've gotten you'd guess that hitting the tank with a powerful enough burst of photons would cause the cloak to end prematurely. Though it most likely take a weaponized laser or maybe a strong gamma ray source. That information could be useful in the right, or wrong, hands...

You know of a potential weakness in the Holographic Optical Cloak, what do you do?
[ ] Say nothing, there are plenty of reasons why it'd be best not to say anything.
[ ] You could try to "subtly mumble" the information, others in the stands might "overhear" you. (Warning: You aren't very good at this).

GM's Note: Major thanks go to UberJJK for his analysis of SD's value and how much people are willing to bid. Sadly all I can give him is an internet cookie. Redeemable at the Google image search. Also a chance at industrial sabotage! If you guys had gone to see the cloaking system on day one you'd have had the chance to screw up their presentation as it was happening. Also I wish SV had the default color, size and font marked in the editor, it would make formatting errors so much easier to fix.

Shifting Developments Bidding "Mini" Update
Shifting Developments Bidding "Mini" Update
2173-Q2

[X] Before Bidding starts turn our people including Freeman and his group loose on the names that have to be kept on under contract. Give them at least two weeks, longer if rival companies are still churning in bids, to look for possible complications--a researcher with a history of fraud, anyone who might be selling secrets on the side, etc--while Revy tries to get a handle on if there could be problems with the tech itself. Do NOT place a bid until and unless the company checks out.

Shifting Developments Investigation
After checking over the patents or at least what's publicly available, your confident that what Shifting Developments has is a viable technology. It's not fully mature and could use more development, but by your standards that's true of most everything. What they do have is a way to deploy ammo mod tech on a specially built mass accelerator cannon. The tech right now can only handle the simpler mods, the rather advanced warp ammo mod being the exception. Which is admittedly less polished than the others.

Your spies, er that is, your investigative staff, have done a thorough review of the company and its employees. Everything looks to be in order, the only item of note is that one of the six employees on the must keep list has a minor chemical imbalance in her brain and requires medication semi-regularly (one pill sized dose per week). The down side to them is that they aren't really top of the line researchers like Paragon Industries tries to recruit, they're more "average". On the more positive side is Captain Hwan a retired veteran of the Systems Alliance Armed Forces. He's a good team leader and organizer and while he's not a genius he is clever and can, as one of his commanders noted, "improvise a smoke bomb with a jug of bleach, two metal cans, some duct tape, a spot of omni-gel and a rubber bouncy ball. Still not entirely sure what the bouncy ball was for." Mr. Freeman also noted that hiring him would increase the perceived connection between Paragon Industries and the Systems Alliance Military, which is already strong from Paragon Industries' current hiring practices.

Captain Hwan is the primary inventor of the tech. After retiring he continued to tinker and had a flash of inspiration when shooting (apparently ammo mods in use on the guns). Captain Hwan worked with several other friends who also liked tinkering to produce a basic proof of concept. This proof of concept got another friend of Captain Hwan's, an Alisha Ellis, to invest in the project. The selling of the company is being handled by Ms. Ellis, but Captain Hwan wants to continue to develop the technology as well as see it get distributed to the Systems Alliance. Because of this the contract includes clauses the require the company buying out to keep some of the employees.

Shifting Developments has a small lab on the planet Watson which only has enough space for a single research team as well as a prototyping workshop. Some negotiations had been started for the company to lease factory time and some consideration for actually building factories, but have been put on hold due to the possible sale. Personnel include a research team as well as administrative, legal and security staff. Watson has some interesting internal politics which may cause Paragon Industries issues if we setup there.

-[X] Before we begin, see if we can do a joint bid of sorts with CHA: we take the people (since we want them and they won't), and will technically have ownership of the patents so we can make improvements without falling into a legal hole, they will have exclusive production rights for the patents until they expire, as well as first refusal to exclusive co-production deals on any new derivative technologies we develop in the area of large-caliber gun ammo mods.

The Cord-Hislop Aerospace Deal
Cord-Hislop Aerospace doesn't have a native mass accelerator cannon development section. They either buy them manufactured to the needed specifications or buy FRM licenses. Historically they've bought most of their weapons from General Dynamics Inc. Due to this having the primary rights to directly produce the tech doesn't interest them. However, they would like access to the technology for their products.

They are willing to cover half the bid up to a limit of them paying 2.25 billion, if Paragon industries agrees to sell them 1000 units of 2m mod-compatible mass accelerators (1.5 production/310k credits production cost each) and 500 units of 5m mod-compatible mass accelerators (3 production/620k credits production cost each) per quarter at cost for 2 quarters, then at normal value for another year. A reasonable delay of 2 quarters before delivery begins would be acceptable. They would also like an agreement not to sell such weapons too their competitors in the aerospace field for the duration of this agreement (1.5-2 years).

Take CHA's deal?
[ ] Yes
[ ] No
[ ] Counter offer: Write in

Shifting developments has a lab on Watson that has a research team slot and produces +10d10 RP as well as a prototyping factory that produces 30 production points per quarter. In addition they have an administrative/legal staff and offices, a research team, and basic security. Of their researchers Captain Hwan may be exceptional.
Continue with the plan? While you've been investigating the bidding has gone up to 525 million.
[ ] Sure
[ ] New Plan: Write In
[ ] Nope, not interested at all

Knock them all Over
Knock them all Over
2173-Q2

Take CHA's Deal:
[X]Yes
Continue with the plan?
[X] Sure

The plan summarized:
[X] Starting Offer
-[X] Offer 550 million or as determined by the below strategy
[X] Strategy
-[X] Wait until the others have settled down then move in
--[X] Do so by significantly trumping the largest bid
--[X] Let things calm if more than one company responds then repeat
---[X] If only one company responds to one of the large trump bids make several smaller bids than another large one.
-[X] Keep an interested if bemused air during the proceedings, we already know who's going to win- Us
[X] Bid Cap
--[X] Up to 5 Billion with useful patents and people. We don't really care about the patents anyway, though we could probably make a deal with CHA to license them for the Gladius.
--[X] For a deal like this I'd feel comfortable contributing up to 4 billion of PI funds, assuming CHA will match that number. If we can find any really good employees (OOC good Research Heroes), maybe up to 6 billion.

GM's Note: I'm going to translate the cap as as being 5 billion + 2.25 billion from CHA. Sadly I couldn't find any good rules suggestions for resolving bidding, so I made some up, they involve dice rolls, I've compressed the back and forth of it after a point. Short version is I rolled a 1d100 to determine company interest after each cycle. If it was below the threshold you won with your last bid, if not then depending on the relative interest to threshold I rolled 2 to 6 d100s and increased the price by that much. Threshold was 10 points for every 10% of 10 billion the sale price represented, rounded up, so 780 million had the threshold at 10, while 1,270 had it at 20. Using large trump bids gave you at bonus (+10) to the threshold, but also drove up the price faster. That first 24 roll almost had you win really early. But then there were a bunch of 90+ interest rolls. Given more time and study a better system could be made but this works for now and produced a result that as GM I can work with.

You enter the bidding with an initial bid of 550 million, then hold back and wait for the bidding to stabilize. Biding goes up to 708 million (sale price +2d100=158), before stabilizing. You place a bid of 780 million, a little more than 10% higher. It would seem that a fair number of companies are finding the current piece to high, but some are continuing to bid (interest: 1d100=24 vs 20), after another round of back and forth, the piece stabilizes at 827 million (sale price +2d100=47). You continue to trump with a bid of 910 million. The remaining bidding companies however seem quite interested in buying the technology and your own interest and large bids may have increased their interest (Interest: 1d100=77, vs 20, price +4d100=241)! You counter the 1,151 million top bid with a 1,270 million bid. Ultimately this seems to have made the remaining companies extremely interested in acquiring the tech. It nice to know they hold your opinion in such high regard.

(Interest: 1d100=97 vs 30, Price +6d100=348, Total: 1,618 million, Trump bid: 1780 million)
(Interest: 1d100=96 vs 30, Price +6d100=258, Total: 2,038 million, Trump bid: 2,245 million)
(Interest: 1d100=47 vs 40, Price +2d100=90 , Total: 2,335 million, Trump bid: 2,570 million)
(Interest: 1d100=95 vs 40, Price +6d100=344, Total: 2,914 million, Trump bid: 3,206 million)
(Interest: 1d100=46 vs 50, below threshold, winner Paragon Industries, bid 3,206 million.)

Ultimately you win with a bid of 3,206 million, the few large companies still bidding unwilling to keep bidding in the face of your large bids. The total cost is 1,603 million for you and an equal amount from CHA. You are now the proud owner of Shifting Developments. They have a Prototyping workshop (30 production/quarter), a lab with a single research team slot (+10d10 RP/quarter, +1 RT slot), basic security, as well as office space for administrative and legal staff. In terms of personnel they have a single research team (+10d10 RP/quarter, pay 300,000/quarter), a basic legal and administrative team, and Captain Hwan. In addition, you now have the Basic Vehicle Scale Ammo Mod (200 points) tech researched.

Captain Hwan, Research Hero/Administrator, Specialization: Developing, optimizing and improving existing Mass Effect setting technologies. Technologies grated: Ammo Mod Techs*.
As a researcher: Uses a Research Team slot, generates 10d10+30 RP/quarter base + bonuses, pay 400,000/quarter. Gains +5 RP/quarter if working on an existing Mass Effect setting tech or a close derivative, +5 RP/quarter if working on an Ammo Mod tech, these stack.
As an administrator: Gives a 15% base multiplier, pay 500,000/quarter for Lab I (+50,000 per additional Lab level), multiplier increased to 20% for technologies in specialization and +5 RP per administered 10d10 if working on Ammo Mod techs.

* Details pending on the tech tree update revision, sorry guys! Work in progress, wish there was an easy way to share the pretty yEd graph for commentary.

Some rules commentary: I think I'm going to go with having to choose if a research hero is an administrator or researching, unless they are awesome and one of their bonuses is that they can do both. As for lab administrator costs I'm thinking of pricing each admin at 400k for 5%, 450k for 10% and 500k for 15%, which each one costing +50k per extra lab level over Lab I.

What will you do with them?
Captain Hwan will:
[ ] Research
[ ] Administer
The Facilities will:
[ ] Be closed (and all willing personnel moved to the planned Elysium expansion)
-[ ] Sell the properties (+ 1 million credits)
-[ ] Keep them
[ ] Remain open
The personnel will:
[ ] All be kept after passing back ground checks and if they are willing to move if need. (Good PR, cost 750k if moved)
[ ] Be let go, save the ones you need to keep. (Cost 150k if moved)

The Presentation
The weather for the third day is overcast. Something you find unfortunate, the audience would get a better view of the drop if the clouds weren't in the way. Oh well there's not much you can do about it now. The audience has packed the viewing area of the Alabino Tank Biathlon proving grounds full. For good or ill you'll have a large audience.

You check your omnitool, timing is important here. And now? Now its show time. With a snap of your fingers a large and very expensive holoprojector activates, displaying three large windows behind you. Each window shows an image of a rapidly growing Earth as well as statistics like altitude, velocity, and other relevant data points. With the camera feeds from the Tigers rapidly descending from orbit behind you begin your presentation.

"A few short years ago the Paragon Industries Arc-Reactor was given a bloody baptism powering the prototype Legionary power armor as it was used to repulse the slaver raid on Mindoir. That same revolutionary power source is also at the heart of Paragon Industries latest product. Of course at Paragon Industries were aren't ones to rest on our laurels, so we added several new revolutionary technologies."

Hmm... the Tigers are almost at the cloud layer... With a wave of your hand the three windows are pushed to the side allowing a clear view of where the tigers are about to punch though the cloud layer.

"Presenting..."

The three Tigers punch a hole in the clouds, their thrusters providing an impressive light show as they decelerate the IFVs for a landing.

"Paragon Industries' entry into the 2173 Systems Alliance IFV Competition. The PI-IFV-02A..."

The Tigers come to a stop a half meter over the ground and hover for a moment.

".. Tiger!"

The Tigers land in a triangular formation. The temporary holes in the clouds have lined up just right to highlight the Tigers with beams of sunlight. You hadn't planned that, you suppose you can forgive the clouds for obscuring the drop.

Several members of your security teams simulate a rapid deployment further enhancing the show. You get a round of applause from the audience. Grinning you let the projected hologram of yourself on stage fade as you walk from the Tiger you rode down on.

"The tiger includes several revolutionary new technologies. I'm sure you can all see that only one of the three behind me has a mass accelerator cannon." As you've spoken the tigers have moved so that they can fire at the simulated targets. "The mass accelerator cannon is a standard 155mm by 2.5m mass accelerator cannon, but with fair more power and made from better materials." A quick few taps on your omnitool change the windows displayed, showing gun camera footage and a view of the targets

A round fired from the first Tiger impacts the target draining the shield, a second blows a hole in the target. "As you can see the upgrades provide superior results to previous mass accelerator weapons. However that's only the basics. The Tiger can also mount..." when your presentation reaches this point the second Tiger fires its laser boring a precision hole in its target ignoring the shield, "...a megawatt range laser." The tiger fires several more times to demonstrate the continued functionality of its laser. The super accurate shots targeting vital components of the simulated target.

"As you saw the Tiger can descend from orbit under its own power and perform precision landings without the 100m of open terrain the Mako needs. The tiger is also fully capable of sustained fight." At this the MAC armed Tiger lifts off and demonstrates the Tiger's aerial maneuverability. "In addition the Tiger can ascend to orbit under its own power, using the nine gees of base thrust provided by its thrusters." The flying tiger takes off heading for space, a new window tracking its accent. "The thrusters on the Tiger are Paragon Industries' latest revolutionary product, the Repulsor! They are a functionally propellant-less thruster capable requiring only power and with Arc-Reactor technology there is plenty of that to go around."

"Of course as Jon's Law and the Kzinti Lesson observe anything that makes a good drive also makes a good weapon. The Repulsor in its current weaponized form is capable of incredible damage." The third Tiger fires its Repulsor at another of the targets, depleting its shield and carving into the target. "Sadly the Repulsor has a limited range, but half a kilometer is more then enough for most cases. If needed a team can rapidly replace the main gun in field conditions."

The audience remains impressed and awed as your presentation continues. You show off the micro-missiles cells, the antimissile system, the autonomous operation system, the barriers, the armor and many other improvements. The Tiger is able to deal with the obstacle course like it wasn't even there and delivers accurate fire even as it crosses uneven terrain. You've got the best IFV around, was there ever any doubt?

[X] Send the data to someone
-[X] The General, lives will depend on the cloak if it goes into service.
-[X] Hand it over tomorrow directly.
-[X] Send a discreet message to Rosenkov and Ariake after the competition. Again, lives will depend on the cloak if it goes into service, and we're still more awesome than they are even if they are invisible.

[X] Offer the General and companions a ride/drive first, including test firing weapons at suitable targets.
[X]
Record the event for image bites for our presentation. Unfortunately it seems we goofed and scheduled the demolition derby until after our presentation. Record it anyway for promo materials after the event.
-[X] Have the IFV's VI Set to maximum automated combat evasion with simulated passenger load.
--[X] Have it running sensors for incoming vehicles and aircraft in case the General gets creative
-[X] Have it run full Automatic electronic warfare packages (and feeding the results to your omnitool).
-[X] Once the point has been made set up the turkey shoot like for the Legionary.

Destruction Derby
You can feel your voice beginning to go from the sheer amount of talking you've done for your presentation. You take advantage of the break between the presentation and the General's... test to get a drink and enjoy your success. You'll have to be careful, if this keeps up you'll develop an ego problem.

General Decroix arrives with a Mako and a full squad of soldiers in Legionary armor. Decroix is also wearing Legionary armor. That means things will be interesting at least. "Your presentation was quite a show Ms. Shepard, very impressive. It also had a familiar trend of making incredible claims and providing just enough evidence without actually explaining how it works."

"Well I'm supposed to be keeping proprietary technologies secret aren't I?" Your reply with a smile.

"True, don't be surprised if the Alliance asks you to restrict the sale of some of those new inventions of yours and keep the technical details secret. Some are a bit more dangerous than would be safe in civilian hands." Decroix says.

"On the subject of secrets... well this is a little awkward, but I ran into some technical information that I though the Alliance military should know about. Not knowing it may get people killed..." you pull out an OSD and hand it to Decroix, "What I found is on the OSD."

"Have you given this information to anyone else?" He asks worried.

"No, I haven't but I was going to send a copy to the producer of the product..." you answer "Unless you think I shouldn't? It may turn out to be nothing, but I felt it was better to be safe then sorry."

"Sending the producer a copy is fine, just make sure you do it in a secure manner. Sending a trusted courier with an OSD is an option." Decroix seems a little more relieved at this, "You're a little more generous then most companies would be they're more inclined to see if there was some advantage they could gain."

"Well that aside would you like a hands on demonstration first?" you inquire, hoping to delay the destruction of the Tiger a bit.

"That sounds excellent, I'd like to learn how to use the autonomous operation system."

You demonstrate the Tiger's operation and its autonomous operation system to the General. The system isn't quite idiot proof, saying that would only invite nature to make a better idiot. On the other had it could be rated as being mild incompetence proof. Decroix gets the hang of it quickly. Afterwards you step out to watch the rest of Decroix's testing.

General Decroix proceeds to drive the Tiger in the most insane way possible. Flipping the IFV repetitively, ramming into things, trying, and succeeding more often than not, to do stunts, as well as other forms of cringe inducing stress testing. He even jumps the Tiger onto one of the targets. You have a feeling General Decroix has seen one of those insane Mako driving videos... Hell he might have been the driver in one!

Fortunately the Tiger comes out in one piece the only harm being some new dirt splatters. General Decroix ends his rampage by parking the Tiger a short distance from the Mako. He gets out and addresses you, "The automatic defenses should be online if I'm read the instrumentation right?"

"Yep they're online, a few of the Sagitta got fired during the demonstration, but there still at over 99% capacity. Other than that everything is good to go." you answer, you have a feeling about whats coming next.

"Excellent, Lieutenant you team is cleared to assault the target." The general says pointing at the Tiger.
"Yes sir, assaulting the target, sir."

You take a quick look at the load out of the soldiers. They're mounting what looks like a heavy anti-vehicle load and several of them have heavy weapons on their backs. The Legionary squad moves like a well oiled machine spreading out so that if the Tiger had been using its main MAC a single shot wouldn't take out more than one.

The antimissile systems intercept the first couple of Pilums fired by the soldiers. "Full missile fire, fire until dead or dry," signals the beginning of a barrage of over 90 Pilum missiles. The first ones are intercepted by the AMS, picked out of the air by light MAC fire and Sagitta missiles. However many get to the shield. The increased shield strength of the Castra barriers manages to stop a fair number of those Pilums despite their shield penetrating system. A few manage to get to the Lorica armor, but despite that manage to do little more then their compatriots as the advanced armor was designed with anti-tank weapons in mind. The Legionary's autocannons do some harm to the shield during the barrage, but the shield holds strong.

At the end of the barrage the Tiger has several new char marks and few dents. Only one of the armor plates was severely compromised and even then the omnigel repair system is fixing what it can. The shields are trying to rebuild as the soldiers pause shocked by the Tigers continued survival.

"It would appear that we need better missiles" the General observes calmly.

"Improved warheads and missiles will be available in three to six months," you comment.

"Good. Lieutenant, continue the assault with heavy weapons, Gunnery Sargent, fire support." General Decroix orders.

At this commend the Mako opens fire joining the soldiers as they draw their heavy weapons and pour more fire into the Tiger. Plasma balls join HEAP autocannon shots, proton cannon bolts and MAC shots of various calibers in their quest to batter down the Tiger's shields.

As the weapon's fire wears down the shields you get a wealth of new data. The AMS system manages to pull of a few tricks you weren't expecting. The AMS has discovered that it can disrupt plasma balls by detonating a Sagitta inside them. The system has also figured out a few tricks to blocking some of the MAC weapons. You watch as the VI fights to give the Tiger even one more second of operational time optimizing weapon use to block as much damage as possible. Sadly though the massed fire will wear the Tiger down regardless of how hard the VI tries.

"You know if the Tiger was fighting back, it'd have won by now right? Hell it would last longer if it could move." you ask.

"Hmm... a good point." the General muses, "Cease fire, recharge heavy weapons. Ms. Shepard can you have the autonomous system operate in a confined area? Also how low did the shields get?"

"The shields got down to 7%. As for a restricted maneuvering area, sure. How big of an area where you thinking?"

"Say a quarter kay per side? Or just a quarter kay bubble, that would work better." Decroix suggests.

While you prepare the maneuvering area the soldiers recharge their heavy weapon's power cells off of power leads from their suits Arc-Reactors, a seemingly minor system which has allowed increased heavy weapon usage. Five minutes later the Tiger is once again the target of a barrage of heavy weapons and autocannons.

This time the Tiger seems to hold the advantage, maneuvering allows it to reduce the damage. Even when several of the barrier projectors reach their charge limits the VIs manage to direct hits to still stable sections of the shield and the stronger armor sections.

Ten minutes later General Decroix speaks up, "It's learning."

"Well it does clip for minimum damage and maximum survivability." you point out.

"Clip?"

"Sorry jargon from early VI/AI development, means optimize."

"Ah... Well I've seen what I wanted to see. Cease fire and stand down!" General Decroix, "I'm impressed, I'll take an army's worth of them."

As you land the Tiger you realize the General Decroix didn't blow it up... yay?

In total the Systems Alliance would like 2500 Tigers delivered before the end of 2175. You can deliver them as they're finished, but sooner would be better.

Cloaking Data
You send the data on the possible weakness in the HOC system to Rosenkov and Ariake using a secure courier. Not to long later you get a thank you note. It seems that they were aware of the issue, but your introduction of small-scale weaponized lasers makes it more of an issue then they originally thought.

Well long as they are aware. You've gone above and beyond your responsibility in this matter.

That Interview Thing
Your people have done some research into possible interviewers. They have three possible options or they can keep looking.

The first is Nova Mark an online popular science publication. An interview with them would focus more on Paragon Industries' tech and possible future developments. It does have a large audience in the Alliance and you could choose to do a video or text interview. It's a fairly safe option.

The ANN is another option. In the Spotlight with Tim Vargan is a well-respected interview show with a wide audience. ANN has galactic reach and reports on galactic issues, but is still a human company. There have been some questions raised about ANN's overall integrity recently. However, Tim Vargan has a good reporting history and his interviews are high quality. Expect a mix of questions from scientific to political.

The most respected galactic network is Tento Ra Iy, named after a mythical Asari deity of truth and wisdom. Originally an Asari company that set out to keep the populace informed so that they could take part in the Asari Republics' free wheeling e-democracy, the company has expanded to cover every species in Citadel space. Galactic Luminaries is the most important of the company's interview shows. The current host is Matriarch Havana. Her interviews tend to use a lot of factual information, but almost always involves "hard hitting" political questions. Expect questions about the Economic, Social and Political impact of our operations.

Interview?
[ ] Nova Mark
[ ] In the Spotlight with Tim Vargan
[ ] Galactic Luminaries
[ ] Keep looking (for anything in particular?)

GM"s Note: NOT DEAD! So some of you may have been wondering about the delay. Some of it had to do with the holidays, but for the most part its because this section is LONG. ~3700 words, ~3300 or so of which are new text I typed. Feel free to point out any errors, things I forgot, or the like I'm sure I made/forgot/whatever a few. Also questions ask, yes. Hope I did things justice. Gah... tired now.

Memento Mori
2173-Q2

Did you really expect anything less than victory? Your technology is the most advanced in the galaxy, even having a cloaking system didn't make up the difference for the next best competitor. You celebrate with Brian, Mom and Dad. You spend the next couple of days enjoying a brief vacation, but before too long you and your traveling companions need to go home. Mom and dad have a farm to run, you own a company and Brian does need to complete his schooling in preparation for joining the Alliance military.

The trip back on the MSV Chestnut is still as high-class as the trip to Earth. You enjoy winding down from the trip. The ship travels rapidly as it jumps from the Earth relay to Arcturus and then hits the Beta-Alpha-Gamma relay towards the Beta-Alpha-Tau relay and Mindoir.

"This is your captain speaking, we have just left the Beta-Alpha-Tau relay. We'll be entering FTL soon and within 24 hours we'll have arrived at Mindoir." comes over the intercom, interrupting your dad's anecdote about his misspent youth.

"Well anyway there we where our clothes partially burnt..." he begins again. Your ears detect the faint sound of machinery starting to work harder. A useful skill for an engineer as it can often herald explosions, fires and other unintended side effects. The slightest cocking of your dad's head shows that he's heard it too. It's probably only the FTL core warming up. You don't recall noticing it before, but you may have been distracted.

Two sharp thumps echo though the ship shaking everything. Even though the inertial dampeners you can feel the shock of the impact.

The captain's voice comes over the intercom again this time strong and commanding, "All hands secure yourselves, we are under attack."

A mad scramble ensues as everyone moves to the crash chairs a the steward had pointed out during the safety briefing. Your parents are at least familiar with this sort of thing and make sure everyone is secure with a military calm.

Your mind races as the ship shakes again, is they anything you can do? There's no way you can do anything electronically the ranges involved are just too great. The squad in Legionary armor wouldn't do a thing in compared to a warship and the two Tigers you have left are just as irrelevant. As your mind races your hear a humming beginning... your parents are singing? Whatever, that's not important maybe if you...

Interlude: Captain Bartholomew Quin of the MSV Chestnut

"Captain, we've just exited the Beta-Alpha-Tau relay. Drift is ten kay-kay-em." The pilot reports, a slight tone of disappointment in his voice as he says the last part.

"Don't worry about it to much Mr. Danau, we're not here to set any records. Ten thousand kilometers is far better then... what was the worst case record? Eleven million or so?" Captain Quin, sitting in the captain's chair, tells the pilot with a smile, "In any case have the FTL plotter begin calculating a course to Mindoir."

The pilot nods, "Yes sir, plotting course."

The captain taps the intercom button and address the ship, "This is your captain speaking, we have just left the Beta-Alpha-Tau relay. We'll be entering FTL soon and within 24 hours we'll have arrived at Mindoir."

"Sir," the sensors and weapons operator, Felicity Kidd, begins confused, "There are two frigate scale ships headed this way. Sensors are IDing them as Terminus Frigates."

In the passing of a moment Captain Quin switches from business as usual to serious. A message from one of his employers flashing into his mind. "Shields to full power!" He calls out.

It is in no little way fortunate that the command is not meant for a human but the ship's VI, who with the lightning fast reflexes of a machine allocates more power to the shields just in time for two spinal mass accelerator slugs to hit the Chestnut's shields.

"Shit!" Jasper Tesar exclaims from the co-pilot/ops seat.

The two terminus frigates quickly slide past the Chestnut their GARDIAN lasers tearing holes in the armor of the civilian ship. Their thrusters are pointed in the direction of travel as they brake and aim their spinal cannons at the Chestnut for another shot.

Captain Quin can feel the rising panic of the bridge crew. Training can never truly match the real thing. As good as the crew is they need a strong unpanicked commander. "Mr. Danau get us out of here. Aim for the black!" he orders firmly before toggling the intercom, "All hands secure yourselves, we are under attack." at the same time with another button tap he puts the ship on combat alert.

The Chestnut maneuvers quickly as it is stuck by two more spinal mass accelerators rounds and trades fire from its own GARDIAN array and turreted mass accelerator cannon with laser fire from the enemy's GARDIAN array. The ship points toward the black emptiness of space, with luck the FTL plotter will clear faster if the ship can't detect anything near the path of travel.

As the Chestnut burns hard, the two hostile frigates give chase less than 40 kilometers behind. They continuously adjust their travel vectors so that their spinal cannons can have a clear shot. As long as they keep firing at the civilian ship it can't risk reducing its mass to far or it risks being slapped around by the impact of the shots. To much and the unexpected shock would be more than the inertial dampeners can handle killing everyone aboard. However without the mass reduction the ship can't escape into FTL.

"No go on FTL sir! We've got MA fire, I'll keep maneuvering and run to FTL if I get a shot!" the pilot reports as he uses the secondary thruster to weave an erratic course.

"Very good Mr. Danau. Ops thrusters and shields have maximum priority." Captain Quin orders keeping his voice calm. This isn't good. He needs a plan, a better one the hope and pray.

If this was a holomovie or other drama the crew would have yelled out reports and assorted expletives, but it is not. The crew is far quieter the noises are mostly computer tones as buttons are pressed, the occasional "Shit", "Damn" or other expletive is quietly muttered. Occasionally the captain gives a crisp command.

A quiet, "Fuck," from Jasper, marks the loss of one of the secondary thrusters to a GARDIAN shot. The automatic systems shutting it down before super-hot plasma damages other components. There's no need to call out the damage as Captain Quin can see it clearly on his own holoscreen.

Felicity's "Damn," heralds the loss of the turreted mass accelerator to a GARDIAN shot, it was irrelevant to the battle and its sacrifice buys the rest of the ship more time.

The Chestnut's active mass effect fields do partially blunt the effect of the GARDIAN lasers and running from the MA cannon shots reduces their effective speed and thus their effective damage. In the end though, the Chestnut is not a warship and the two Terminus Frigates, as low quality as they are, are warships and can deliver much more hurt then the Chestnut can handle. A few more shots from the spinal MA cannons and the shields will be down, opening the armor already ravaged by GARDIAN laser fire to direct hits.

"Mr. Danau I'm sending you a maneuver pattern. Execute it after the next shots from their spinal MA cannons hit or pass us. Then do an FTL run, plotter has maximum CPU priority." Captain Quin orders, sending the pilot the data.

"Yes sir!" the pilot says his voice showing more confidence now that he has an actionable plan.

Despite her other disadvantages the Chestnut is the chased not the chaser giving her the initiative in maneuvering. After the next twin shots from the frigates' spinal MA cannons strike the Chestnut's shields, the civilian ship cuts thrust and instead decelerates maneuvering slightly out of the way of the two hostile frigates' path of travel. This rapid maneuver causes the Terminus Frigates to completely overshoot the Chestnut's position, falling out of GARDIAN range and aiming the wrong way to hit with their spinal MA cannons.

As the hostile ships try to correct their flight paths so that they can fire their MA cannons at the Chestnut again, the civilian ship begins to accelerate as fast as she can tangent to her original path. The FTL plotter crunching numbers in preparation for FTL travel.

The timer for the FTL plotter on Captain Quin's holoscreen reads four seconds and starts counting down. It will take only a little more than eleven seconds all told for the ship to warp the bars of Einstein's cage so far that it could barely be called a cage at all. But for those eleven seconds the ship will be still be in danger and if the attackers land a shot everyone on board will die. Fortunately the hostile frigates will have the incredibly difficult task of landing a shot on a ship more than 50,000 kilometers away, made even more impossible by the ships increasing speed, distance and the distortions of light caused by mass effect fields and relativity.

"Beginning FTL run, Mark six seconds!" The pilot calls out once the plotter clears the flight plan. The information is more for the crew's moral then anything else, but it does its job as the tension on the bridge is vastly reduced.

"Five..."

"Four..."

"Three..."

"Two..."

"One..."

"Zero..." there is nothing particularly magical about the transition from the perspective of a passenger or crew member. No sounds, no feelings, but the ship is now going faster than light does naturally. Making any attempt to harm her pointless. The bridge crew breathes a sigh of relief.

"We're not dead!" Jasper exclaims happily.

"Yeah..." Felicity says shocked, "Take that pirates." She adds with a small fist pump.

"Excellent work everyone." Captain Quin congratulates the crew, "Though I doubt those were pirates. At a guess I'd say that was an assassination attempt. Pirates aren't trying to destroy their targets. Mr. Danau how long is the FTL run for?"

"It's only a five minute run sir." the pilot reports, "I didn't think flying off into the black to long was productive."

"Perfectly reasonable Mr. Danau, once we decelerate, immediately plot a course to Mindoir. Mr. Tesar give me a full damage report."

"Sir, secondary thruster number four is offline. Its bell was punctured by a GARDIAN laser, the containment systems prevented any additional damage, but it's pretty useless without time in a dock. The MA cannon turret is also offline it took a couple of direct hits so it'll need to be completely replaced. Most of the rear ablative armor is damaged or gone, computer estimates 17% coverage left. A few shots even got down to the primary pressure hull. Omnigel systems have got that covered. We also lost a GARDIAN turret and a few shield projectors. That's all I've got without an inspection. I've got the DC teams looking at things." Jasper reports.

"Very good Mr. Tesar" Captain Quin says, tapping the intercom he again addresses the ship, "We've successfully escaped to FTL, however in five minutes will be drop to STL again. In the extremely unlike case that we meet hostile force when we leave FTL, we will remain secured for combat until we begin our FTL run to Mindoir."

Which another button press Captain Quin calls the Steward James, "James how are our passengers?"

"Alive, the younger two seem to be in a bit of shock, but I think that Ms. Shepard's parents being ex-military and having done this sort of thing before helped."

"That's good, I'll let you get back to your job then." Captain Quin's attention returns to his holoscreens as he keeps an eye on the ship's operations. Soon they'll be under the Systems Alliance detachment at Mindoir's protection and he won't have to worry anymore.

End Interlude

As you travel down to Mindoir's surface, you look out the shuttle's window at the damaged MSV Chestnut. Her torn armor panels and partially exposed hull are a stark reminder of how close you came to death. You've been in life threatening situations before. However, there is something just... different about a threat to your life that you can do nothing about, about being helpless.

The attackers, two "Terminus Frigates", had no IFF beacons or identifying marks. Which makes sense, "Terminus Frigate" is the nickname for the Wuni class frigate. The frigate was originally developed produced by the Terminus manufacture the Elkoss Combine, but now it's produced by several independent Terminus manufacturers as well. Cheap, low-tech, disposable, and produced in large numbers they make the perfect deniable asset. The frigates that attacked you probably never had any names other than the serial numbers from their production run. (Which were no doubt promptly filed off of course.)

The Systems Alliance knows about this attack, but they admit that not much is likely to come of their investigation. They will keep you informed.

GM's Note: So yeah I was kinda planing this for a while after most people in the last thread said they wanted conspiracies and stuff. This is related to larger events that are going on in the background and stuff. From an out of game perspective you technically where never in any danger. I'm not going to kill you without offering some choice or a chance, though if you guys hang yourselves with previous choices that's your fault. Consider this a cinematic.

Anyway for those of you that don't do Latin or literature, the title, Memento Mori, means "remember (that you have) to die", I've also seen used as "remember death" or in literature as a description of the hero being reminded of his or her own mortality.

The good ship MSV Chestnut apparently didn't have a in quest name before that I can find, she is actually named after a ME character. Though good luck finding the connection. I might give points if someone can find it, but be warned it'll be really hard.

I tried to render the space combat with my best understanding of how it works in ME and applying a little realism to fill in the holes. However I did include a little unreality in some of it for better action/drama. I wish I could show you the pretty mental images of the 3D maneuvering paths, I hope my descriptions got them across.

As for the vote, seeking professional help is the "safe" vote as far as any mental trauma goes, however I will be rolling regardless of what you choose. With a good roll even voting to get drunk would turn out okay, but getting professional help will give you the largest "bonus". The fallout of the vote will show up in the awaited 2173-Q3 update. I'll also be trying to post a picture of the new tech tree before to long so that people can comment on it.

The update itself aside the arc is done. So I'd like a little feedback. The arc was one of the longest, running twelve updates, nine of which are my work. I tried to keep things interesting and give you some additional options outside of "[ ] Win the competition". That said it did make things longer. Was that okay with people? Where other things you thought could be fixed/made better outside of what has been said before?

Finally the Finances doc is kinda out of date last I checked. It's missing the ISAR, the three Tiger orders, the four Tiger built for the competition, the expenses for the purchases you made and probably a few other things I forgot. @UberJJK I believe the current form is you brainchild for the most part, could you look into adding that stuff? I'll look into adding the new tech items to the production sheet soon if they aren't already there.

Feel free to ask questions and point out any errors!
