Shepard Quest Mk V, Base of Operations (ME/MCU)

Hmm, a good question. Now, what we need to ask ourselves: Are we ready to outsource frigate production when the demand goes into overdrive? Because if the costs are at all comparable, Alliance is going to scrap all their in-construction frigates, possibly even some cruisers, for our stuff. That would mean that we'd need to supply a lot of ships in short order, to fill the requests from the military. Now, given that they are likely to slave some of their shipyards to us, but that might not help much, as we probably would need to use specialized equipment in building ships. One shipyard would not be enough, anyway. Not for anything but the proof of concept (that, by the way, is another reason to move to Earth - most of the shipyards are likely there).

If we are not ready, we need to seriously lay in preparatory work for overtime. This means expanding any shipyard we make in preparation of a massive production influx.

Now, I can see benefits of building "normal" frigates first. If only to retool the production lines.

Actually... Yeah, we probably would need to produce some "normal" frigates in order to secure financing to expand production and for other manufacturers to retool production lines. We are in this to stop the Reapers after all.

Personally? I support the hold off until our tech catches up vote. What we should be doing with the space stations is using it to basically use the shipyards to improve orbital construction capabilities. Build a few more shipyards and the like. Even bigger shipyards also. One we have the tech to be able to build kill sats then we might want to set up a thousand or so in orbit but until they become effective lets hold off.

Though, also, do remember dreadnoughts are limited mostly due to their planet wrecking abilities. Are our new ships going to actually be better at that, or will the planet's atmosphere, large volume, large mass, large surface area, and in the case of planets like earth, massive natural heatsinks, render them actually Less effective at damaging planets?

Depends upon what type of laser we're using and the atmosphere we're talking about. As this image shows the opacity of the atmosphere to various types of lasers various quite a bit. Given that we'll likely be pushing for as low wavelength as possible, to extend range, odds are our lasers won't be that effective against atmospheres.

If we're worried about security for the shipyards, the alliance would have to be stupid to not bend over backward to provide security if we ask. Just tell them that we're working on doing to the frigate what we did to power armor, but to do the project right we need to dedicate our time to building up production facilities instead of our own interim security fleet.

I agree that our money would be better spent on extra shipyards, not frigates that will only last a year before being outdated.

@Yog
I'm pretty sure Arcturus is the Alliance's biggest shipyard. It definitely has a large one - we know at least one dreadnought was built there. It's the political capital of the alliance, headquarters for the navy, and the single largest dock for the fleet, since you can't get to Earth without going through the Arcturus Relay.

I'd see the Alliance building there if only to separate themselves from the Earth governments.

Very true.

Frankly once they stress test the shiny new frigate their probably going to outright offer to pay to have enough shipyards built to our specifications and under our control so long as that money immediately gets turned around and is considered to have already paid for so many new frigates once the shipyards are finally working. AKA they get the first X amount of frigates to roll off the assembly line. They would kind of be stupid not too... we are basically selling McGuffins to them given how badly the new ships would out tech literally everything else on the galactic scale. They would basically be able to force their way into a council seat once they had a 1000 of those frigates in their navy... much less replaced all their old frigates with our new design...

Good point, but Arcturus is still closest to Earth, not to any other planet.

There are some components we can construct in factory and lift without issue, The IAR's it will need for example, the computers and other electronics.
Lifting them for installation in the hull being built would be a non-issue and would lighten the production load on the ship yard from construction and installation to just installation.

When the ship yard comes on line we don't actually have to build frigates either before our design is finished. Freighters and transports will still be in demand and even without the bells and whistles it would still be a quality ship as has been suggested least them to a certain front company if there's interest.

Edit: We also need to make expand our power generation to Mindoir's other two cities improving our power revenue like wise we need to do the same on the other planets we set up on.

Totally forgot about the power generation - might as well.

And you know what, there is no need for a front company. Paragon Industries can release a light of civilian freighters and transports, no reason they can't.

Might want to have it under a different corporation we make entirely for the purpose of running it. For legal reasons...

No comment on the military builds us ship building facilities for our ships idea?:???:

What legal reasons? We have put a lot of error into our brand, we may as well use it. Besides, more exposure is good.

They won't. Shipyards are expensive as fuck, they don't have the money in their budgets for that - that said, we will probably just get their entire fucking defense budget, and maybe some tax breaks/subsidies to boot.

bad business to steal cord hislop's market.
No, normal business. I'm sure they aren't the only aerspace company around anyways.

Agreed, we signed a non-competition agreement with them anyways IIRC.
Yeah, for the Gladius - as in, we couldn't use the fighter design experience we got from them and immediately put out our own fighter in direct competition.

Why is everyone so scared of just...doing business? That's how the market works. If we can't break into it due to our size, darn. If we can, then they need to compete.

So we just... don't make fighters right now (which apparently behave more like bombers anyway, normally). We make air cars and shuttles and frigates and light freighters and ferry equivilants (more than a shuttle, but not a cruise liner). No worries there.

Also: yay!: we use the right kind of lasers and the citadel loses a lot of legitimacy for any moves to ban our not-dreads by way of them doing little or nothing to garden worlds. (And extranet SV/SB equivalent type people start trying to find ways to make "atmosphere" shields for ships :p)

Which, admittedly, just means they just have to draw up a new treaty rather than fiddling with the old one, but they can't claim it's for any reason other than keeping them on top, so they'd have a hard time getting anyone to sign it with uneven limits.

Hrm. We can start 5 more shipyards before they would be opening late; We then save money for a few quarters, and then start building lots of frigates.

@Esbilon: Any chance we could get prices for a larger shipyard?

It'd probably be fairly expensive (Say, 100+ billion) But when we decide to, I want to be able to build many ships. ^.^

Edit: Doh. 5 shipyards over the next two quarters, then however many we want to buy in the third quarter when the 11 or so Factory IIIs come online. (So much loot!)

The reason I want to wait for our own version is so that we can include our ship building techs without giving the game away on the frigate design.

This is for three reasons,
  • First, to keep PI as a synonym for cutting edge. Building last years tech without our own improvements could be construed in the short term as us burning out of ideas
  • Second, to keep our innovations undercover. This is for two reasons too; To deliver maximum punch from our unveiling and the second is to keep groups like the STG doing something drastic to maintain the balance of power before it's a fait accompli.
  • Third so that we can set up our own shipping business. With travel times vastly faster than than any competitor, with ships that can out run any pirate.
The third is a fairly weak reason for not doing so I'll admit. The Second part of the second is the big worry given how hard and fast we're pushing.

Bear in mind the ship building market is much more limited given the cost of new ships. That said if we set up a shipping business then we will rapidly gain a significant share of the transport market.

The ship building one is, Aye. But Each shipyard makes a light cruiser every quarter, at the most. It takes 6 months for a heavy cruiser to be finished normally. And given that we will be selling ships to the council races as well (though not as many as we do the alliance), We're not going to tap out the market for a while yet. And our Goal is to tap it out, anyways. After all, the red coats Reapers are coming!

I'd actually like to keep our full ship building to SA and ourselves until we both have a decisive lead in hulls of those classes and until the SA is offered a Council seat to get those techs disseminated more widely. by that point we should be approaching gen two versions of everything for ourselves.

At least for modern hulls.

Difficult.
On the one hand holding off would save resources...
On the other hand it can kill us.
If certain people realize just how powerful out tech is about to become I would not be too surprised to see a "pirate" fleet appear, one the fighters would not be able to handle. Besides the fighters, while good, are not as good as we could have made them. So having a couple of more or less "normal" frigates as a backup could literally save us should things go south, in my opinion.

I don't follow - how would our ships be last year's tech? Besides, Paragon Industries is going to be a true mega corporation, with fingers in damn near every pie. As long as we maintain high quality, there is no reason we can't make cutter edge stuff and more low-brow things.

It won't be a secret from the STG if we make a subsidiary...besides, it's obvious who the tech came from, who else has Repulsors? Just hold off on grand scale distribution for a bit if it's a real concern. Third - why can't Paragon Industries have it's own shipping division? It's about to have a PMC everyone is going to associate with it, might as well have the civilian wing be strongly associated too - we want everyone to see our name, and know our name.

Agreed. Though if the Alliance realizes the full implication of Paragon Industries paradigm shifting tech advances, it won't be hard to wrangle a long term stationing of a cruiser or frigate squadron to defend our primary installations.
