Shepard Quest Mk V, Base of Operations (ME/MCU)

So which groups that are after our tech likely set up this tap?

do we know what region of space we're in?

i am not, i'm honestly curious about the probability, and dislike the practice of lying because it's "closer to the truth".

Neither "effectively nil" or "less than 1%" are lies or in any way inaccurate statements. The former, however, implies an even lower number below 1% than simply saying below 1% does, hence why they used it. There. That's been said repeatedly over pretty much a whole page, so we can all stop it now. @Carrnage stop nitpicking, everyone stop getting hot and bothered about his nitpicking.

there's lying and there's practicality. Anyways, here's the fixed stats:

With all Dice maxed out, we have 130d10+120 to the first three, and 10d10+110 to the armor.

we need to get 738 to cover the first three, while their dice can possibly earn 1420, leaving 682 to go to MkII. That gets halved, so 451+10d10 is the best case for the MkII.

Unfortunately I can't quite account for everything with the program I'm using - I can't catch the case where one of the first three doesn't complete.
Furthermore, the probability is apparently too small for the program I'm using to calculate properly as is - but I know it's smaller than 2.127639320601526e-11.

So far, I think we've guessed that it could be space pirates (batarian-funded or otherwise), a Citadel race group like the salarian STG, turian Blackwatch, or an asari matriarch, Cerberus in some idiotic convoluted plot (considered unlikely), our corporate rivals trying to stop us from making any more awesome tech, geth, mercs, and Reapers/Reaper mindslaves... I'm sure there were others, but I can't remember them.

wow, that is impressively tiny.

I was actually wondering if there was anything that indicates a particular group but looking through the update we don't even know what sector we're in.

@Esbilon

So I'm in the process of re-doing the tech tree and I'm wondering; What's the point of the "Hover Tanks" tech bubble under Medium Armor? I mean the Tiger is already effectively a Hover IFV thanks to it's Repulsors so I don't see why our Medium Armor (IE Tank) wouldn't also be Hover capable.

Somewhere between the Verge and Local System. So, solidly human space. That does lower the odds for Batarians or Terminus pirates, they don't really have that kind of force projection.

So on a more useful note three points and a though.
  1. Revy is having trouble seeing the difference between Cortana as a VI and an actual person
  2. Cortana is so cutting edge she practically bleeds and unlike our other VI is optimised to help everything we do.
    • I.e. she doesn't have the algorithms of just one of a personalised Custom Personal Assistant VI, a Tactical VI(Action Analysis and autonomous action), Research VI (Data Analysis) and E-Warfare/Cyber-Warfare VI (Adaption and Evolution - Capable of locking down a frigate(?) and it's parasite compliment for over an hour *Before* any of our research in those areas), she has all of them.
Including therefore all their specialised learning algorithms not just one set.
      • She probably even has the Security VI algorithms just for completeness or more likely for when we're running Security Exercises with out teams. Recently knowledge that people really are out to get us it would make sense in case Revy needs to personally take control of building security. The security algorithms are actually probably similar to the Tactical ones in part just geared to more 'restrained' results. Which would give Cortana a second slightly different set of result options to choose from in a tactical situation.
    • Cortana's probably tweaked further by us as issues or bugs come up almost without thinking. Revy is pretty see problem, fix problem orientated.
  3. Cortana is now running on a device that is for most of it's operational time is now directly taking data feeds from Revy's super brain. She gets both the raw feed and has the analysis package to interpret that data.
What are the odds we're very close or actually have pushed Cortana over into software AI status without realising?

According to the ME wiki Mindoir is in the Attican Traverse. The Traverse is "Located near the lawless Terminus Systems, the Attican Traverse is the true frontier of Citadel-controlled space."

I would not be surprised. After all she's a JARVIS stand-in. Probably what will end up inspiring Revy to design Software AI. After all she accidentally created one so of course she'd try and do it again, but on purpose this time.

You know I don't think Revy's mother would be very surprised by that.
Jeez I wonder what Revy was like as a child...

She built a perpetual motion device for her science fair project.

I bet they couldn't leave her alone for five minutes without Revy disassembling the toaster or something.

Given that the Moon VI became an AI, with a little help form Cerberus, Cortana becoming a real girl AI isn't even impossible, simply unlikely.

Curious how no one took notice of her until she put on the suit.
I mean an actual perpetual motion machine...
That must have been ringing some alarm bells.
Damn lax science teachers not looking for the next big Einstein.

"Dad I broke physics!"
"That's nice honey just tape it to the fridge."

Well apparently it's not a big thing:
"Uh, I built it. I was out testing it, but then a bunch of shuttles flew by and-"

"I get the idea Revy." She sighed before continuing. "I suppose I should have expected this sort of thing ever since you built a perpetual motion machine for your science fair project."

You frown at the memory. "It wasn't that impressive. The University of Serrice's is much more efficient."

Probably works like how Yog described it but inefficient enough that they simply aren't practical given the amount of Eezo required.

It's not like she was the first person to do it. And anyway, the one at Serrice University is much more efficient.

Re: the whole AI thing. I doubt that Cortana is actually an AI. Revy does know what she's doing and as far as I know the only accidental AI in the setting are the Geth, which only came about because no one realized you could create a hivemind AI by linking enough VIs together.

Hannibal, the one on the moon, was a deliberate attempt at creating an AI. Not the Alliance's first either, they're actually building one on Sidon right now. If the timeline isn't altered they'll get caught by the Council in 2165 and get some political sanctions for it. So of course they couldn't admit to doing it again, so Hannibal is just a VI that went nuts and 'unfortunately' none of its code was salvageable, so no one can find out exactly what happened.

Cortana is probably on the around the level of Protheran "VI"-s.

Really, the border betweenn advanved VI-s and simple AI-s is glossed over.

The term VI, is merly artificial.

Vigil would coulnt as an AI by Citadel standards

If Cortana has breached the boundary between VI and AI, we should keep it quiet. Really quiet. Because the Council are fucking utter dicks towards AI.
Considering that to their knowledge, up to this point in time, every single AI in history has rebelled against and killed their organic creators, their caution is understandable.

And yes, I know that's not the whole story. I'm saying, from the limited perspective of the Citadel council and the politicians who draft these laws, it's true.

Did I vote? I don't remember... Well its a bandwagon so not like it maters much:

[X] Acquiesce and see what you can do to help. But make sure to have the security detail suit up and suit up yourself as well, just in case this is a trap. Even if it isn't, the armor will be useful for helping out. Have Brian put on the shield belt. After all, you can't be too careful. Also, have the Tigers warmed up for use. Can't be too careful.

As for AI the council has some pretty serious anti-AI laws (to the tune of assassination, death, and the possible condemnation of your entire species, though to be honest the Quarians not only effed up by making the geth but the handled the fallout of that like morons too). I'd be willing to bet that there are very good VI limiter programs and programming methodologies. Once you have an architecture it shouldn't bet that hard to find the point when it become complex enough to become a sapient entity. (Though this may involve making one) They have had hundreds of years to play with VI and preventing AI. Also you can get something that looks a lot like an AI by stacking together a lot of expert systems, never underestimate the human ability to anthropomorphize things.

Vigil acted as a defense program with a simple enough IFF system, ran a translation program, held a fairly simple conversation and managed the resources of a base as determined by a prearranged hierarchy. None of that is particularly AI like by mass effect standards of what they would call an AI. It sounds like four specialized programs with a central controller program. If Vigil had displayed signs of self determination or held a complex conversation I could maybe see some indication of calling it an AI. (Unless it forgot something Vigil did) VI level stuff can look very AI like due to the rather clever conversation software (see Avina, exposition machine that she is), which of course just makes determining AI from VI harder.

I'm I the only CS person here that get a kick out of the fact that IRL AI just means: system capable of making "complex" decisions?

That's not even true from that perspective. A.I.s living on Citadel were killed before they could rebel or showed any sign of rebelling (see Shadow Broker's files). As far as I know, only geth have ever actually rebelled and killed their organic creators. Please feel free to correct me qith sources.

My personal opinion is that asari are culturally and likely biologically biased against synthetics because they (asari) can't procreate with them (synthetics). Think of how big a shock that would be to asari as individuals and a culture. And how much danger that would present to them politically. "They don't need us", when applied to synthetics? I always took it to mean "they don't need us in their lives"
