Reach the Stars, Explore the Void REBOOT : A Stellaris-inspired quest of research and exploration

Adhoc vote count started by OldShadow on May 7, 2024 at 12:27 PM, finished with 26 posts and 21 votes.

Current tally

Interestingly, the two most chosen background options would be influenced by the state of the galaxy.
The Gift or Invaders in the Wild Land would be something "natural" (spaceborn wildlife, extradimensional anomalies, invading ecosystem...) will in the Graveyard they would be remnants of the past (robot/clone armies/factories, bioweapon, various automated systems/AI....).

I will let the vote run for a few more hours, than write the next update.

Background Generation, P.2 : To pay the Sins of Others
[X] Through shared resistance
[X] A Graveyard

You begin with 2 Creation Points (CP), representing the luck that allowed Humanity to triumph over the Invaders. They can go into the negative, but the balance of the Points will determine the general state of humanity at the start of the game.

For all eternity, Humanity shall remember the day when everything changed, the day where the Invaders came.

It was October 23…

Choose the time of the coming of the Invaders, earlier date will mean greater technological gaps between the Invaders and Humanity, and greater changes from our OTL societies and cultures.

[] 1897 (+1 CP)

[] 1956

[] 2021 (-1 CP)

Today, many wonder why our ancestors reacted so slowly to the coming menace, why they showed so much confusion. But how could they have been ready for a threat they could barely understand ? How could they have known what had come ?

Choose one theme for the Invaders, and as many suboptions as desired.

[] Eternal Army

That the tools of war of a distant empire, built for conquest and battles without end, would stumble upon Earth.that they would do the only things they knew.
Conquer and kills.

The Eternal Army exist for total war. Nothing more, nothing less.
If Humanity survives, they will learn the ways of battles.

-[] All Devouring Army (+1 CP)
The Eternal Army was built to conquer without rest, to consume the spoils of wars and turn them into more weapons to fill their ranks. So they did on Earth, consuming our bodies, our cities, our very lands into more of themselves, turning our world into weapons pointed at humanity.
Harder resistance to the Invaders, vast swaths of Earth will have been converted into Invaders and Invaders infrastructures after the War, both damaging the reconstruction of Earth and unlocking options to studies, or even use for Humanity what the Army converted.
-[] Conscription, Perfected (+1 CP)
The Eternal Army existed to subjugate world after world, species after species. To help in this task, they were able to forcefully convert their victims into more of themselves, absorbing their intellect and knowledge into their ranks.
So they did, with the population of entire cities.
Harder resistance may create conflicts later on how to deal with the Conscripted.
-[] An Army of Extermination (+1 CP)
No mercy or concept of unacceptable collateral damages existed for the Eternal Army, and so they flattened our cities with orbital bombardments, they turned our lands into deserts, and they murdered all in their path, without care.
All that mattered to them was conquest, even if it turned Earth into a lifeless rock.
The Eternal Army will use WMD and show no regard for collateral damages. If this action is not taken, the Eternal Army will seek to conquer a still usable and habitable planet. Give a deep experience with space-age WMD.
-[] The Rules of War (-1 CP)
Why did the makers of cruel weapons of universal conquest bound them to rules ? We do not know, but nonetheless, the Eternal Army was bound by strange rules, protocols of war born from alien minds. Protocols we could exploit.
Easier resistance, the Eternal Army will be bound by Rules of War, including, perhaps, protocoles of surrender.

[] Parasitic Godlings

That hedonistic monsters from beyond would come, with incredible powers and insatiable appetite. They came to hunt, feast, build palaces from the spoils of conquest, to extend their existence through pillage and leave once they were done, leaving behind a lifeless, trash-filled Earth, the last humans kept as trophies or to be used as entertainment and ingredients for future feasts.

The Parasitics Godlings have the strongest technology of any type of Invaders, and the basest desires. They came to feast and indulge, with no care for others.
From them, much can be taken, from impossible artifacts to almost incomprehensible records.

-[] The Shadows Game [+1 CP]
The Godlings had no interest in base pursuits like wars or conquests. No, for them was the sophisticated art of manipulation and intrigues, the sublime pursuit of turning proud leaders into puppets and free people into willing slaves, to simply appear and watch in delight as an entire world prostrated itself before you.
This is what the Godlings sought, with all the skills born of hundred, if not thousand years of practice.
The Parasitic Godlings are masters of manipulation, propaganda and social engineering, seeking to act from the shadows until entire planets become their willing playground.
-[] To fill a Wardrobe [+1 CP]
To the Godlings, bodies are nothing more than outfits, to be switched and altered at will. They delighted in simply taking over human beings, and escaping the destruction of their newest "sheel" with indolent ease.
The Parasitic Godlings can easily take over and jump from body to body, making them hard to find, hard to kill and able to easily infiltrate humanity.
-[] Unleash the Menagerie [+1 CP]
The Godlings had the means to create almost at will mindless servants and pets, to serve their every whims and to unleash for their pleasures.
On Earth, they did so with obvious delight, spreading horror after horror.
The Parasitic Godlings have the means to create a vast amount of servants, and did so with abandon on Earth. Decisions will be unlocked to deal with the remaining servants.
-[] Childlike Godlings [-1 CP] Can be taken multiples times
For all their power, all their experience, the Parasitic Godlings are…almost childlike in their monstrosity. Easily distracted, constantly conflicting with one another, spending time and resources on pointless vanity projects.
When the Gods are spoiled childs, even the ants may triumph…
For every time this option is taken, the Parasitic Godlings will become increasingly vain, distracted and focused on infighting.

[] World Shapers

That Shapers had come to Earth, seeking to rebuild our world according to the orders and beliefs of aliens tyrants light-years away. For them, Earth was theirs by rights, and we were but interlopers, our cities worth as much respect as an anthill in the way of a road.
The World Shaping Authority does not care for humanity, seeing Earth as only another world to shape.
From them, Humanity may learn much of infrastructures and terraforming.

-[] Hostile Xenomorphing [+1 CP]
Earth did not correspond to the ideals parameters of the Authority. This was to be changed. We had to rush against time, as the very air became slowly unbreathable for us, and ideal for distant overlord.
The consequences of Xenomorphing will make Earth far less hospitable for Humanity.
-[] Seeds of Alien Life [+1 CP]
The Authority had specific parameters for what sort of life must exist, and so they seeded Earth with such life. Forest of crystals rose, and in them walked new beasts, hostile one, and hardly enough to resist bullets and crush steel between their maws.
We had to live with an Earth made the garden of others.
Earth has been seeded with aliens, hostile life
-[] One City [+1 CP]
The Authority began to build a city, and expand it, without end. What they sought was clear, to turn every inch of Earth into urban sprawl.
Even today, how much of earth is covered by buildings we cannot use, how much of our soil cannot be cultivated ?
At least 5% of the Earth's surface has been turned into an alien city.
-[] Reservations [-1 CP]
Was there some mercy in the mind of the Shapers, or was it a cruel joke ? There were parts of Earth untouched, or, perhaps even worse, shaped specifically for human habitations. Small strips of land where we could live…and watch as our world was taken from us.
Parts of Earth will have been reserved for human habitations
Choose an Aesthetics for the Invaders, determining their style of technology and some of the consequences of their assaults.

[] Biological, shaped flesh and blood.
[] Mechanical, metals and electronics.
[] Anomalous, energy and warping of reality
[] Write-In, subject to QM approval.

There was no way to prepare, and, at first, no ways to defend ourselves. We suffered, our nations crumbled around us, our people suffered.

But we fought , we fought against the impossible, against those Invaders that seemed invincible.
And we found glimmers of hopes, each paid in blood, embers in the darkness telling us victory was possible…

Choose some of the advantages that allowed Humanity to triumph against almost impossible odds.

[] Subversion [-1 CP] Can be taken up to two times.
Humanity found ways to subvert and use some of the tools of their Invaders, allowing them to better defend themselves. Taken one time, this is the equivalent of reprogramming some of Skynet's Terminators. Two time, the equivalent of taking over a significant chunk of Skynet's industry and forces.
-[] Specific Subversion [Write-In an option]
Choose one of the suboption of the Invader, to indicate Humanity subverting a specific part of their assets.

[] Treasure Trove [-1 CP]
Humanity obtained a sizable trove of usable aliens technologies, allowing to kickstart human resistance and retro engineering efforts.

[] An age of heroes [-1 CP]
In Humanity's time of need, heroes rose to the challenge. Humanity will benefits from figures equivalent to John Conor, both during the War and after it as both example and leaders.

[] All of Earth rose as One [-1 CP]
All the nations and peoples of the Soviet Union rose up in response to the Party's call to defend the motherland, once said the USSR. It was a lie.
But this time, when we said all the nations and peoples of Earth rose as one and fought to the last against the Invaders, this will be nothing but the true. May this spirit persist forevermore.

[] Fatal Weakness [-1 CP]
The Invaders had a weakness, something that could be struck to crush their efforts in one instant, like in the movies of old.
And struck it we did, with all we had.

[] Time Limit [-2 CP]
Unknown to us, the Invaders were acting with borrowed time. Slowly, perhaps from illness, a lack of a specific resource, or perhaps simple entropy, their forces crumbled to nothing, leaving Earth to Humanity.

—---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4 hours moratorium, please vote by plan.
First, do not hesitate to propose a specific fluff for the Invaders, or even propose Write-In, I have plans for each option on how Earth will be after the Invasion, but I would like it if it was a collaborative act of creation !
Second, do not hesitate to ask questions about the results of your plans, I will be more than happy to answer !
Third, next update will be about the War of Resistance and the reconstruction of Earth. After it, their will be one final Background Generation update on the makeup of the Forward Defence Research Division, and the quest will begin in true.

So ideas with these plans basically for the first one maybe humanity goes full steampunk as a result of the biological terraforming but unites. For the other I was thinking a more Lovecraftian Victorian vibes due to the reality warping.

-[X] All of Earth rose as One [-1 CP]

Apparently all Humanity needs to do in order to fight climate change, urban sprawl and ecosystem destruction is to have outsiders decide to have their turn at it. I chose to go with two Subversions over the others because I wanted the environmental change for the narrative but did not want them to be permanent (just long lasting). Which, when I looked around for what to spend my remaining 'free' point on caused a nice narrative for a second subversion as I wanted to keep 1CP remaining.

Willing to swap Subverting the Seeded Life for Treasure Trove or Age of Heroes if people really want it. Or just vote for plans that make the swap. But I kind of feel like these two Subversions together basically give us a 'free' Treasure Trove already, just angled towards the lower tech options rather than the top regions of the alien tech tree.

Not set on the type of Alien Incursion either.

Research report #8175. The subjugation of the garden world(refered to as Terra/Earth) went as predicted. The local sapient species refered to as human was easily subjected, as the anamolous creatures from Black Hole Incident #B38 and Zro dust(henceforth referred to as Zhuti) experiments were transported onto the Garden World for research.

Though all was going as scheduled untill year redacted, there was an uprising. The Human species had somehow tamed the Zhuti. How still needs to be verified as of this moment.

As the research outpost left was not equiped to deal with such an uprising, especially due to the Zhuti's capacity to defy know laws of the universe, it appears we've lost all controll over Garden World Terra.
Neverthless, it is my belief that this represents a research opportunity, as all attempts at taming have failed so far.

- -- So! Based on idea that human tends to just get attached to everything right? From a dog to a toaster, and when mysterious aliens came to earth and terraformed it with weird eldritch creatures. And how we'd eat spices that are techincally poison cause we like the taste of it.

So Humanity did the humanity thing and eventually managed to tame the creatures and just eating weird parts of the new enviorment, that the more logical invaders would never consider.

It is a bit of a write in, but the idea is that the world shaper are full on mechanical/machinery style, but the creatures(and what humanity got), are the anamolous reality warping type.(assuming Oldshadow is fine with that!

[X] Plan: Victorian Interrupt Industrial Evolution

I like the idea of Biopunk a lot. I especially enjoy it in a historical context that messes with conventional standards. My plan is to make the most out of salvaging the aliens tech and get a springboard. While still leaving some points left over for more world building.

Allrighty, so i'mma try to argue for my plan, "stop petting the eldritch creatures human".

What was the general idea behind it. So, in games like stellaris, shows like Star trek, star wars and so forth. You often have your normal futuristic technology focused empires, but occasionally, you have those weird creatures that lurks on that planet, that breaks the normal rules. A tiger-like creature that can phase through walls. An Eel the size of a battleship, and so forth.

The alien invaders, is another of these technology focused Empires. One i'd imagine with a lot of robots, cybernetics and such. And they, invade Earth, (being primarly a research group). Of course, due to robots that can tank most bullets, having access to spaceships they easily crushed all of humanities armies underneath their feet. The goverments reduced to ash. It was never a contest at all.

But then, come stage 2. Where they start to bring in all these creatures, titantic creatures the size of skyscrappers, butterflies that can invade your mind. To essentially, re-create earth into an alien Zoo world. Because they want to have so many creatures in one place, so it's easier for people to visit them, so it's easier to study them..And perhaps maybe because they are curious on what would happen. So the One-City, is less of a city and more like a giant "zoo/Theme park" in this case. Which doesn't help humanity much here, once containment is breached in the repulsion of the aliens.

Except, unlike humans, our alien invaders aren't really as good at getting attached to things. A human might see a romba, add googly-eyes to it and say stuff like "keep in there mister cleaner". These guys don't, and in of there lies the fatal flaw of what ultimatly ends up happening. Because humanity, ends up befriending, taming these types of creature, in a way the aliens hadn't really been able to consider due to their own psychological mindset.

So, when humanity tries to throw of the aliens, it's with cavalry riding flying snakes. An spinnly creature attached to their arm that can open up doors. With fruits that if you spit out explodes. And because this is just a mere research group, they aren't really prepared for all these utterly out of the box scenarios to happen to them. "No, we didn't prepare for the natives to befriend a spider that can hide in any shadows!!!"

Is essentially the kind of vibe i was going for. It might not full work out like that, OldShadow does ultimatly decide how it will turn out.

The reason for the mechanical invaders but anamolous creatures/plants was because i wanted that divide between the logical/Hard machine like invaders and humanity just being extremly wacky/out of the box. In this case, i imagine the humans wouldn't learn much from the technology of the alien. It's more for the aesthetic reasoning here. They might find a computer, but being from 1900th they got no idea what on earth it is, or how it even work. And with a lack of access to understanding it, they won't be able to really replicate it. That's why i didn't include treasure trove spesifically in the plan.

But, they can replicate the plants and creatures. Perhaps a plant that will grow a large plant seed, that can be used to power steam robots? And so forth. It is in some way, a riff on the idea of "humans are the only guys crazy enough to eat a poisonous plant because they think the spicy taste is good", that you see thrown around sometime.!
