Distance Learning for fun and profit...

It's HPverse wizards... I suspect that the level of logical thought required to do that may not be as immediate as you'd think, or hope. Based on the record we have available, they're not big on logical thought ;)

I feel like the movies really ruined Ron, the movies gave a lot of his more informative lines to Hermoine, who was supposed to be the booksmart person of the group who was helping make sure that the other two kept up with their grades and progress, while Ron was the somewhat lazy, but still well informed when it came to the wizarding world person. His freakout to Harry in the 4th book can be attributed to him still being just a kid really. As for him abandoning the group in the Deathly hallows...well, Between Ron, Hermoine, and Harry, Hermoine had already obliviated and sent her parents off to Australia, Harry's parents are dead, and the rest of his blood relatives don't really give a damn, but Ron, Ron has his entire family to worry about, and he did come back.

Again, I'm hoping that this fic more showcases the Book version of Ron, because that Ron is actually kind of cool.

However, I think he was actually thinking of the rules of the PRT, which say that Parahumans cannot be members of the Parahuman Response Team; they can only be members of the Protectorate, who ANSWER to the PRT.
The idea that parahumans are forbidden by regulation from joining the PRT is fanon. (And, indeed, I doubt very much they were, at least officially; while the de-facto purpose of the PRT may have been to keep parahumans under the supervision of normal people, and I doubt any known parahuman ever actually rose to command rank, having a law enforcement agency which the population it was in charge of policing was explicitly barred from joining would not go over well.) We also know that the Protectorate wasn't the only option for parahumans in the PRT (citation part 1, part 2); one explicitly named alternative was Watchdog.

Do correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the Impression that the Triumvirate was altogether, yet another different organization from The Protectorate, that nominally followed the PRT, AND that no one knew that Alexandria was also Costa-Brown? So... IF that is correct, my point still stands.
  • The original 'Protectorate' was the independent Hero team consisting of Hero, Alexandria, Legend, and Eidolon.
  • When the government decided to create an official state-backed Hero team, this team formed the nucleus of it and the new organisation took its name.
  • After Hero died, the term 'Triumvirate' came to be applied to Alexandria, Legend, and Eidolon as the strongest Heroes in the world (bar Scion), but it was never an official title
  • The fact that RCB was Alexandria was a secret, yes
AND unless there is information otherwise the "C" in PRTCJ would likely stand for Civilian
Actually, I'm pretty sure it stands for 'Code'. 'Uniform Code of Military Justice' is acronymmed as 'UCMJ'.

But, it's made rather clear that the PRT do not receive federal funding, that even a regional Police Department would.
Citation?

Edit:
So, no, they're still rather clearly a civilian organization.
How exactly are you defining 'civilian' here? Because the PRT are 'civilian' in the same way that the FBI are.

Don't forget the mind-affecting bit of the Dark Lord's soul he spent days wearing around his neck.

Again, I'm hoping that this fic more showcases the Book version of Ron, because that Ron is actually kind of cool.
Um, this is a Worm fanfic. Ron is unlikely to appear.

There are two things wrong with that idea. First, Legend is the head of the Protectorate, not Alexandria. Second, the Protectorate is actually subordinate to the PRT, so even if Rebecca weren't also a member of the Triumvirate, Legend wouldn't actually be able to do anything about her.
In the PRT documents WB drew up, they are equal but seperate agencies, with congressional oversight. Neither of them is in charge of the other.
There are treaties preventing the use of Parahumans in militaries (which the Yang-Ban explicitly violates, but Wildbow and Cauldron), yes. However, I think he was actually thinking of the rules of the PRT, which say that Parahumans cannot be members of the Parahuman Response Team; they can only be members of the Protectorate, who ANSWER to the PRT.

See my above statements.

already stated that the PRT put themselves under the authority of the country of operations Military command. AND unless there is information otherwise the "C" in PRTCJ would likely stand for Civilian. Which I think is law enforcement rather than civil defense (military) which again, I've already pointed out. But, it's made rather clear that the PRT do not receive federal funding, that even a regional Police Department would. So, no, they're still rather clearly a civilian organization.
Both agencies are federally mandated groups with international law enforcement powers and congressional oversight, based, according to WB, on the US military.

What part of that sounds even remotely civilian to you?

And, just curious here... where the hell would they get the money to run a civilian agency that doesn't do their job?

Governments can have failing departments, but civvies have to show results, or no one hires them, uses their services, etc. If BB's PRT was a civvie group, they would have been bankrupt years ago.

Or, and look at the protocols for several of the (fill in the blank) 9 powers ratings. The possession and use of intercity ballistic missles is not a power any government is going to let civvies have.

On the subject of possible Power Armor Suits popping up.... While there are many possible end points for suits to end up as, I suspect something like the Archangel Flying Powered Armor from Xcom may be closer to an early design. Well, that or the bulky, heavily mechanized MADOX design from the old Anime OVA MADOX-01...

Something like a Mobile Infantry suit would be a MUCH later development; think the F-22 Raptor compared to the initial suits, that would be more like a WWI Biplane, if not the Wright Brother's prototype...

I think the first power armor would be more along the lines of the Exo-Mech in Fel's Subjugation series. Think the Aliens owner loader with full coverage armor and automatic weapons.

You are all going huge, I think the first examples would be much lighter and almost not count as power armor at all. More like a lightly armored bodysuit that uses the gravity tech to boost strength and durability. It would be much more practical than the small (and some not so small) mecha that have been suggested.

I am not saying that they wouldn't get there eventually but I think it would be a slow build-up from *much* smaller and lower-key armors that are more practical for ground-level use.

While I agree with the sentiment, I think you have the wrong fic.

Well, Taylor's got the gravity tech for flight. She's close to a structural integrity force field. The portable MRI could be adapted into a neural control system.

Legion Flight Rings are probably a little too small for her at the moment, but a literal flight suit that outclasses Vicky? End of the month, tops.

@macdjord, @Ravenwood240, I apologize, but at this time I seem to be unable to word a civil, or polite, response to your rebuttals. I've already deleted five drafts that would at least earn me warnings... if I find myself able to keep a calmer mien at a future point, I shall endeavor to answer your questions then. (short reason for hostilities: the joke that's not a joke about "bad Worm Flashbacks" circumstance really riles me up)

PRTCJ would appear to either mean Parahuman Response Team Criminal Justice or Parahuman Response Team Civilian Justice. Also, the PRT was the brainchild of Costa-Brown, I believe. It may or may not actually be a part of the Department of Justice, Wildbow was never really clear on that. But I think he mentioned that it's not a federal agency, but a civilian (IE not ran by the government) agency that has been granted authority by the government. Considering that canonically the PRT has access to intercontinental missiles, I'd wonder how the hell that is suppose to work.

As others mentioned, this is a Worm fanfiction where Taylor Hebert is a true super genius. It's not a Harry Potter crossover. As such, Ron is unlikely to appear outside of omakes.

Isn't a white dwarf eating material from a companion star just a regular nova, not a supernova?

It can be, if it doesn't overfeed. It can even develop into a periodic nova. ...But the right kind gets you the KA-BOOM that briefly outshines the galaxy.

Wikipedia on supernovas is fascinating reading, if you're at all into different weird things that can happen in high-energy astrophysics. More types than most people have any idea exist, for starters.

Anyway...
So -- what happens when Taylor adds a simple oscillation circuit to her power dampener, so that it can turn on and off every 3.1 microseconds or so?

Dave, Asimov once solved a problem with spaceship structural integrity in almost exactly this manner

PRTCJ would appear to either mean Parahuman Response Team Criminal Justice or Parahuman Response Team Civilian Justice.
On what are you basing this? Given the name is obviously modelled on 'UCMJ' and takes the same place in the oath of service, the most likely expansion for the 'C' is simply 'code'. After all, you can't swear to obey 'the Parahuman Response Team Criminal Justice', because 'a justice' is a type of judge.

But I think he mentioned that it's not a federal agency, but a civilian (IE not ran by the government) agency that has been granted authority by the government.
Source? There are a couple of places in the Worm wiki which describe the Protectorate as something like that - as an independent organization which has agreed to obey the PRTCJ and accept oversight in exchange for governmental funding and legitimization, but which isn't really a branch of the government in itself - but nothing with a citation and nothing whatsoever that describes the PRT itself that way.

(Incidentally, the lack of any citations on that leads me to retract one of my earlier claims: I can find no canonical evidence that Hero, Alexandria, Legend, and Eidolon ever operated as an independent Hero team under the name 'Protectorate' prior to the founding of the official government organization of the same name. That may have been fanon I picked up somewhere.)

"You are under arrest for murder with a Parahuman power, Villain!"

"No I'm not."

"What... Of course you are! By the powers granted to me by the federal government, I am placing you under arrest!"

"For what?"

"I just told you! Murder exacerbated by a Parahuman power. Kaiser is dead over there, and we have witnesses that say you did it."

"I did do it, yes."

"AHA! Condemned out of your own mouth, miscreant! You are coming with me."

"Nope."

"... you are making this far more difficult than it needs to be. We have incontrovertible proof that..."

"Hold on. Please."

"Attempting to talk yourself out of this won't work."

"Bet it will."

"What was that?"

"Nothing. OK, look. You're trying to arrest me for murdering our local Nazi leader by means of a Parahuman power, correct?"

"Yes."

"And you think that I'm a villain?"

"Yes!"

"Right. I see. Couple of minor points though."

"Which are?"

"Well, point one, it was self defence, he was attacking this entire area and killed at least five people I'm sure of, not to mention injured about another ten."

"Killing a villain with powers is unacceptable and is deemed murder in the eyes of the law regardless of circumstances."

"Which is idiotic. That aside, point two is that I didn't use any powers."

"I don't understand..."

"I used this. It's a gun. You may remember them from such crimes as the bank robbery yesterday where all your Wards got humiliated?"

"..."

"Shot him right in the eye. .45ACP hollow point to the brain seemed to do the job, even with his armor. He still needed to be able to see and he didn't duck fast enough."

"..."

"No powers. No Parahuman crime. Clear self defence case in my view, and I bet the law will say the same."

"...even if you used a gun, you being a Parahuman will still mean that..."

"Not a Parahuman either. Just a normal human."

"You're wearing a mask!"

"It's the middle of March and it's cold. This is a scarf!"

"I don't believe this."

"Sorry. Not a Parahuman, no powers involved, Kaiser was a dick, and now he's a dead dick. Now if you'll excuse me I need to go talk to the cops over there, the ones grinning at us, tell them what happened, and then my dad expects me home for dinner. Nice to meet you, Armsmaster. Later."

...I am conflicted. I want this to be expanded to a full fic, but adding another fic to mppi's library would mean a delay for more Kenny wordz

Kenny Wordz nothing, what about Truthful Wordz or Doomed Wordz? Or Lizardy Wordz?

Yes, I stopped reading Incompatable Systems a while back. It started out amusing, but lost my interest after 3 or 4 chapters.

WB on reddit:

"The PRT is a paramilitary (that is, organized like military but not explicit US Military) grouping of law enforcement, akin to SWAT. The Protectorate, Wards, and Watchdog programs, among others, fall under the umbrella of this paramilitary organization. Because of the stipulations, regulations, the justice system for the powered, and the international actions that the Protectorate may take, there is a code of justice modeled loosely after the military one, giving Congress the power to stipulate the laws, and the executive the power to direct - but while they may be treated like military in many respects, this doesn't make the PRT military, and barring certain specific deployments, it doesn't make the Protectorate military either." - Wildbow on Reddit

Congress makes their rules and laws, the president is the command authority. They are law enforcement personnel.

67 bases, 9 hosv, uncounted smaller offices across two countries, with permission to operate internationally. A PRT code of justice.

I cannot find any WoG that claims they are civvies. Did I miss something?

When did he give that little pearl? Cause I could have sworn he'd previously said they were not actually connected to the government.

The HPverse wizards act like a internet second life community.

Users mysteriously going 'last online X days ago', rules about abuse of the server, rules of acceptable models, rules of hacking ownership of user made scripts, etc.

That is funny, but a bit random. How is it related to Distance learning? Shouldn't it be in Random (forgot the exact name)?

But otherwise, great Snippet!

It was in response to discussions and expansions about Alexandria/RCB's trying to imply that whoever designed the gravity reference frame device had to be a parahuman.
