-[X]Make new creatures!
--[X] 8 Elfling wasps (bringing us to 10 in total) (24 mana)
---[X] Deploy them in the entrance hall.

New to this but that sounds like a good plan.

Don't worry about being new, I'm new to this too :D

I'll list a few of the best trap+unit combat strategies that I currently know we can pull off:
  1. Flying Fusillade: Exactly what it sounds like. Have pixies attack from flying range from the center of the larger room.
    1. Critical Requirement: Prevent enemies from reaching the dungeon-crystal. Medium+ sized enemies are already blocked. We could potentially have Scuttles HOLD THE LINE against some enemies. Some way to bar the passage would be nice - or something to prevent enemies from knowing which way to go.
    2. Secondary Requirement: Consider some way to prevent enemies from escaping (and coming back to harass us later).
  2. Fus Ro Dah!: Have pixies slam enemies into spikes.
    1. Requirement: Spike traps.
    2. Requirement: a relevant dungeon design - these would probably be best to place in the corner of a narrow corridor.
  3. Hammer and Anvil: Use pixie blowback to concentrate foes beneath that nice falling rock.
    1. Requirement: Falling rock trap.
    2. Requirement: a relevant dungeon design - this would probably also work best in a narrow corridor, and the corner would also likely work quite well. (For extra grins: have the falling rock block the enemy forces off from chasing the path they were on.)

Questions:
  1. Can the pixies deliberately time their healing out-of-sync with each other, so that a healing can take effect between each enemy attack?
  2. What increases Mana Well (that we know of)? Does a larger dungeon help with that?

1. Not in their current state, they aren't smart enough for that. But, there are healing over time, area healing and aura healing, both from spells and not, so maybe something that can be teached to help?
2. New rooms, also Scuttles seemed to increase your well when he joined, you don't know why. No, larger dungeon only helps to store more mana, not generate more.

As to help gather votes for Full's plan, and with the QM, I have come to announce that we will get a new Soulbound monster next update, controlled by myself, which is an Elfling Wasp Commander, with the special ability of Leadership, granting a +1 on all rolls of every Elfling-type Fae, so getting more of those will help, and this bonus can increase, and can even be applied to other Fae or others monster types in the future.

1. Well, my plan right now is to create two more rooms which would help make it take enemies a little longer on average to find the right path forward. That is a stalling tactic that should work even though it isn't exactly perfectly reliable. And one of the better methods of blocking a one by one corridor might be to stick Scuttles in it since I doubt many creatures can fit past him in a space that cramped. But note that pixies are somewhat worse than wasps for attacking.
2&3. We could dig a pit (either by summoning ants to do it or by just buying it). Place it along one of the walls. Then have the pixies blow enemies in that direction so they fall down into the pit. It would do damage but perhaps more importantly it would split up and stall intruders. Later on we could add some spikes or something to it.

Question. What estimates do we have on how effective bosses will be v.s. ordinary units when it comes to base defense? Correct me if I'm wrong but I get the impression that bosses will have more HP and thus we'll take less losses when invasions occur right? Or we can we not position the boss at the front or something?

(Disclaimer: Not sure about any of this, but wondering about it for future turns)

EDIT: Oops. Missed the earlier writings on the matter. Still, maybe we should try and persuade somebody to become a boss? Take less losses that way.

The only kind of boss you can do right now are floor bosses, and you don't know how effective or strong they are, but you do know that any boss is an evolution from a creature in the first floor, and that he is unique, even if he dies you revive him, instead of making a new one. Of course, your Soul Bounds already have this revival trait by themselves.

Do we have any idea how much mana it costs to revive bosses/soulbound creatures? It's hard to tell at this stage, but it might be a good strategy to place a boss/soulbound creature at the front to inflict casualties and then die before battles. This would be medium term, of course.

You have no idea of the costs. Actually, IC, you don't even know they can be revived. This could probably make a good scene if/when one of them dies :D

I like the Fus Ro Dah! plan.

The adventurers jumping over the incredibly easy to avoid Pit of Doom and then suddenly get force pushed back into the Pit of Doom.

Votes closed, it should be awhile until I write the update, since I still have to go out for lunch, so see you soon :B

Why no helmet?
Monday, Dungeon Date 03/01/0001

-------------------------------

As you ready yourself for new activity you can't stop thining about that mantis and, more specifically, about the feeling you got as you absorbed it. That desire to live seems to ressonate with you, and before you notice it your mana is already forming a new elfling, though somehow your feelings are channeled into him and he feels... Different. He also looks different, as the light fades.

Elfling wasps are similar to your pixies, but male and their whole body is covered in a black chitinous armor, even their faces, so they look like flying armors carrying lances. Your new one is similar, but he has no helmet, his wings are like dragonflies instead of butterflies, and both the armor and the lance have small lines of dark red going through. At distance those lines can't be seem on the black, but up close they make it feel superior, somehow. His face is angular and very masculine, with eyes the color of flames and black short hair. Besides the most obvious physical dissonances, he also feels diferent, and thus you loo into his status, noticing that he is like Scuttles! He has a soul, and consciousness, looking at your crystal, calmly waiting for orders.

Since you don't now what to order him yet, you first make other seven elfling wasps, then ask for him to lead them to the entrance, where he will meet the other two. He salutes your crystal and flies with a hand signal for the other to follow, which they do in formation! This is new, and very interesting.

The defense better settled, you call Scuttles and talk a little with him, mainly about the ants. He tells you that if they come back it will be today or tomorrow, and they probably won't know what happened, but as more come more trails will be left behind, so if a single ant reach where the last one died, it's probable it will go back and call for war. Both you and Scuttles seem to think it better that he stays, even with the new friend you can't be sure you'll be able to stop the ant attacks.

While you spoke with your favorite centipede your mana was creating something new, a tree in the big first room. Your wasps seem to appreciate it, while the pixies mae it grow faster.

You make a new tunnel as Scuttles scuttles to the first room, hehe, and then settle down. In a couple of hours the sun comes down, and you have too little mana to continue your plan right now.

Luck seems to be on your side, as no ants came yet, though a small pack of common wolves enter the dungeon. Those five beasts are bigger than anything you've seen, except for Scuttles and the mantis, they also seem faster, but not as durable. Maybe they can serve to test your new troops? Or maybe their mana would be good for a new room and you should just kill them all... But your first choice is to try and communicate with them! Scuttles can only speak in the mind channel, but maybe the new guy can speak? Also, maybe he needs a name... Should you name him, or ask for him to name himself?

-------------------------------

Life. Sweet, sweet life. And duty. There is no life without duty, that is certain. As your eyes open for the very first time you watch the thing which you serve, the dungeon that you are part of. This sacred crystal seem to take a while observing you, then make some others and give you your first order: lead them to the front. This is nice, very good, you are a leader! Somehow, the others seem to be diferent from you. Not only in appearance, they don't seem to have many thoughts... As you walk you hear in your mind master speaking with some Scuttles. Aparently Scuttles is also part of the dungeon, so you shouldn't fight it, but you feel kind of indisposed. He wasn't born here, he is not made from the sweet mana of the creator, for you it feels wrong.

But this is duty aswell, and thus it is life, the dungeon makes the choices and you accept. The tree is good, your soldiers can stay in there, away form view, and come out as a single wave against enemies! If you have more soldiers, maybe you'll need more trees, but for now it's enough. After the sun comes down, creatures enter the cave, and you can't wait to lead your troops in this fight!

All you need is the order, and those creatures shall die...

-------------------------------

New Soul Bound! He is an Elfling Wasp Commander.
More troops, another corridor and a tree, the room still needs more mana to be made.

Mana Reserves: 0003

What's the next step?
[] Ask the new guy to name himself, then go negotiate with the wolfs!
[] Give a name to the new guy, then go negotiate with the wolfs!
-[] Which name?
[] Ask Scuttles to negotiate with the wolfs, speaking is not the only way of communication!
[] Don't negotiate, they won't understand anyway, just send everything to kill them.
[] Don't negotiate, you should test your new guy, send him and his wasps to battle!
-[] Let him name himself before the battle.
-[] Let him name himself after the battle.
-[] Present him a name after the battle.
[] I've got some other idea... (Write-in)

____________________________________________________________________________________________

Not a big chapter but the second Soul Bound is here :B He is a valiant soldiers who would rather die than fail an order! Maybe he needs more fun and jokes? Who knows? The dice has spoken: five wolfs enter the den. You got somewhat lucky, they are only normal animals, shouldn't be a problem if you end up in a fight. Thanks for reading :3

Racist anti-immigration elflings, didn't expect political commentary to enter into the quest. :p

As for the wolves... Well we can't really communicate with them can we? I think this probably comes down to violence. Maybe we could see what they are here for first though.

[X] Ask the new guy to name himself, then go negotiate with the wolfs!
-[X] Keep the rest of the Elfling wasps at the ready and have scuttles defending the entrance to the core with the pixies healing him.

The pixies should probably be deployed as healers, not as defenders. Especially as that could be taken to imply that they are going to be trying to physically block the entrance leaving vulnerable on the ground. If we can have Scuttles in the tunnel that would be plenty to block of attackers since they should have a very hard time attacking him more than one at a time in there.

On the phone, so I won't make a plan, but if we have to fight, maybe make the Elflings stay in flight, attacking in volleys with their magic in groups of 3~4, in a way that there will always be at least one group attacking, while the pixies go with healing and cc (wind push), while Scuttle go and draw aggro. Seems solid, imo.

The risk there is that since the wolves can only attack Scuttles they'll group up on him. And the pixies are capped with regards to how much they can heal and they can't heal Scuttles if he gets killed in one turn. If Scuttles sticks to the tunnel the wolves can only attack him one at a time, which combined with both healing and our elflings blasting away at the enemy means he is pretty safe. Going out and drawing aggro is decidedly less safe. Though I guess this is one of those things where @Sereg 's opinion counts for a lot... How much risk do you want to take here? Go out in the open and you might get bursted down too fast for you to be healed. OTOH if you stick to the tunnel the wolves may run away.

I'm also not sure on the value of the elflings attacking in volleys? Why not just maximize RoF until mana runs out? It is better than having 60% of our elflings fluttering around being useless. Thirty attack three attacks can put out quite a bit of damage.

Bringing the elflings as an escort might spoil a perfectly good ambush. I'm not sure about the mechanics of getting ambushed in this system but it should only be able to help us here. And describing what the pixies should do is probably a good idea.

fixed, also they can jump over scuttles which is what I am worried about.

For the ambush none of your troops can do it "in the open", only by bursting through some unexpected place could it work with the creatures you have right now.

About tanking the wolves, they would actually need to win all dices with all five attacking to kill Scuttles in a single turn, they are a little weaker than soldier ants, though they run faster and have a bonus to perception (making ambushing them even harder).

About the volleys it depends on how big/slow the battle is, also of other factors like regeneration or enemy healing. It is the diference between a constant damage non-stop (literally non-stop) and a burst of three turns then a turn without any attack, so in the end it depends on the situation. The same is valid for the pixies, though with healing, pushing and fire. Also, you've been dismissing a little the pixies, so I'll give a little spoiler: it's way easier for them to learn new spells than for the elflings.

fixed, also they can jump over scuttles which is what I am worried about.

In the small tunnels they can't, those tunnels have 1 meter from side to side and 1m from ground to the roof. For people in america here's a comparison: 1m = 3,28ft. It's very cramped. Do notice that those small tunnels come all after the big room with the tree.
