You Are: A sector admiral of a strained imperium.

[X] The Broker. Get a favourable introduction to a not quite noble, but noble descended, mover and shaker of the underworld on Illam, somebody who knows things and trades secrets.

Because as nice as the mercanary would be later on, we can't get our own fleet for awhile yet and there is little other reason to go for them. Whereas the broker may let us get ACTUAL dirt on the Ducal houses letting us properly smash one of them or hold something so heavy over them they have to do what we want. (if we can smash them will SKYROCKET us up in favor and make all of the others afraid ESPECIALLY if we manage to also get the nobility beforehand.)

[X] Delay. Ranca is currently your subordinate, but if that can be fixed? You can absolutely hit it off again.

Only sensible option really.

The Broker would be very useful in getting an edge on smuggling, piracy, and enemy action both foreign and domestic.
But, I don't like the implied give and take that comes with the job description.

The mercenary is the most above board option and helps solve the manpower shortage problem Strauss has been dealing with.

At the very least, if we've hired the PMCs, presumably noone else can.

if something happens along this line great if not, then not getting angry brass and/or noble family going after us sounds like a plan

also having a bigger information network setup is always a good investment i say

Pirate might be able to give us more insight into who's funding them, honestly. Or where and when they hit people. Or any number of things.

But all of them seem useful.

[X] It is impossible. Regardless of your feelings, Ranca is your military subordinate and you cannot resume a relationship with you.

I'm...pretty sure we're not doing priority voting, friend.

The PMC can be used as private bodyguards or elite marines. They sound like the kind of PMC made up of veterans who are a cut above the average soldier. The PMC is notably the only legal option and it has a direct benefit to our military operations. Broker? I don't believe they have that kind of dirt and their information won't be as important if we leave the NASP border by the end of our third year. One of those Ducal Houses happens to be the one Ranca is part of. The other is a Ducal House that likes us. We don't need underworld contacts unless we want to get involved in the underworld. They"ll rat us out if we get arrested. It is better we stick to our strengths.

Now, if we want more intelligence assets? We have Sones, Scolly and Wison. Once we complete the mission by Imperial Intelligence, we"ll have our opening with them. We should be able to then get Imperial Intelligence agents to officially aid us.

Pirate might be able to give us more insight into who's funding them, honestly. Or where and when they hit people. Or any number of things.

But all of them seem useful.

We know the sources of piracy. It is ex-military veterans out to make money, dissidents, pirates funded by House Arril to attack House Jamoor and NASP. What more information do we need? Becoming friendly with the pirates goes against being friendly with the Governor General.

Swapping Ranca's ship with an equivalent vessel in a neighboring sector might be one example, or arranging for her corvette to be operating directly on orders from Fleet Command instead of under your authority.

Don't both of those mean she leaves our command and we lose our presence? Unless the second would operate under a technicality? Wouldn't Fleet Command get a portion of the prize share instead of us that way?

I'm going to just go out on a limb and assume that if we gain a Share and marry her, there's specific regulation that Nobles can exploit to continue working in comfortable proximity to their spouse. Because that would fit the type of power the Imperium is.

That is a very good point. It isn't like House Arril would be against it. Ranca would be able to spin it as her being loyal to her House all along by marrying the best military officer in the Imperium. When we become a noble by title and genetics they have even less of a reason to be against it.

Mercenary seems to be just what we need. Could help quell the fires in Imhotep, train up some better crew, or take missions to harass the enemy.

As for Ranca, I'd like to see about getting a share so we'll be mostly sheltered from the consequences of fraternizing with a subordinate. Aside from that I'm all aboard the Ranca-train. She comes from a good house, she's strong enough to trivialize most fights (especially against NASP), has a good intrigue score, and is loyal. That's more than I can see getting out of any other noble.

It's specifically why I want to Delay instead of just go with it being impossible. This is about politics as much as it is about passion, but that there is passion there is worth a lot. It could also get a Noble House that's about to start rolling out Battleships potentially on side in the mid-term future. Our subpar diplomacy at present makes trying to work with the House navies difficult, but if we have filial link that's likely to change quite a lot, I suspect. Consider the possibilities of Ranca cashiering out of the Navy...and then leading a Arril squadron under our authority. Technically not our subordinate, you know :p

Purely from a politics point, isn't she not the best choice? Ranca is a black sheep and the heir to a comtal cadet branch of one of the two ducal houses who were damaged from the war. There is an argument to be made we should wait and see. On the other hand, Ranca is genuinely interested in us and the others would be motivated out of politics. When we become a noble and get more victories under us, we"ll get serious marriage prospects. I'm voting to Delay, but it is something to consider.

Yes and no. If we marry her and keep up the victories, we make her more powerful within her family and that could lead to her moving up in their estimations in line with our own ability to rake in the prize money. It's a complicated matter, and though you're certainly right that from a pure politics view there might be better matches out there, Ranca is someone we can trust. She respects us now, regardless of our origins, and that really matters given our eventual goals. A 'serious' marriage proposal will only be after us for the status that we can bring them. A relationship with Rance is far more two-way, and that's important on multiple levels. We're not a high-brow schemer, and getting caught in the webs of high grade Imperium dynastics is a very good way to end up with all our good work leeched away or tossed down a bucket.

Ranca can give us status, a link to a Noble House that will be useful, and far more importantly a partner in life and war that we'll know we can trust.

I mean "our eventual goals" are still a matter for a thread vote, mind you. Just because a lot of posters have been talking plans and no one has bothered to argue doesn't mean it won't get contentious when an actual vote is on the line.

[X] The Pirate. Get a favourable introduction to a terrified of you mover and shaker behind sector wide piracy.

I think we should look at the pirate for one reason, the ducal houses, if the ducal houses turned hostile then having an in with the pirates will let us use our God like skill at war against them quickly and easily without the bowback.

You're right. Everyone talking about Reinhard becoming Emperor of Imperium is thinking small and they have to be challenged. Let us make Reinhard become the Emperor of all human space instead! Hubris is a coward's word! :D:p
