XCOM: Agent of F.I.X.F.I.C.

[X] Yes, but only until the headache gets worse.
-[X] Serious pain.
[X] I was going to to take a couple hours poking and prodding at the Muton using my mind. It wasn't very strong willed, so I might be able to find something Vahlen might miss. Win or lose, once I was done-
-[X] I'd ask the others to keep the Muton alive so we could try for more later.

[X] Yes, but only the minimum to prevent anyone from dying.

[X] Yes, but only until the headache gets worse.
-[X] Distracting pain.
[X] F.I.X.F.I.C. said they'd reward me if I could free these aliens from the Ethereals' control. If I could start that process now, it would be worth taking however long it took to get the Muton to, at the very least, try communicate with me. I would stop when interrupted, or when I succeeded.

Getting everyone back on their feet helps. But freeing the Ethereals' slaves needs to be a priority. Our goal isn't just to win the war; it's to make things better.

[X] Yes, as many as I'm allowed to help out with. I'll heal, they might not.
-[X] Distracting pain
-[X] Also work with the doctors to get the most out of your healing.
[X] I wasn't ready for this kind of Psionic work.
-[x] I'd ask Dr. Vahlen if her mind probing equipment was ready, and if it was, I would help placate the Muton for the procedure.

Going for the whole probe thing as getting the intel here on tech and mission stuff is more important now and needs to be done sooner rather then later to have a better effect on xcom. Since the faster we get that kind of info the more helpful it will be for ops and keeping our guys alive. An honestly I value that more then trying to save one xeno life at the risk of those gains.

Since nothing stops us from trying the whole free them thing with a later xeno or even starting with the Thin man instead.

As for the healing, I figured since we aren't going to be pushing ourself with the Muton, might as well go for broke healing our guys.

Psionic Burnout bad, saving people good. You can always come back later.
(You can't heal your brain if you brain damage yourself into not being able to heal)

Save the whales Saving the aliens from psi-slavery could be a good thing. Extra help, new stuff, data, the goodness of heart bonus troops damage to enemy morale. It's a gift that keeps out giving.

Just imagine a Muton with an anti-psi helm locking and loading with a strike team (Mutons would take up two skyranger slots yes)

Does anyone know of any other quests or stories with this premise? (Shit will go down without interference, go do the thing. Have a boon to work with and with a character not being a major dick?)

I literally started my own quest just to do this kind of meddling, albeit much less strictly defined and more street level.

Also I was trying to scream about multiple skyranger at the screen when I started reading this. Unfortunately you couldn't hear me all the way in the past and the extra muton is a good thing in retrospect.

Omake: Breakthrough
Under normal circumstances, they're dying of a sort of immortality-cancer, and they need Humanity, or any other eligible species, to be turned into their meat puppets so they can continue living forever.
more.......they've reached the extreme end of Psi enhancements ability to extend their lives. And they need us because they were unable to break through anime style and become "ascended", whatever that means. For their failure, they're being hunted. And every meat-shield the can put in the hunters way while they work on self improvement is seized ruthlessly. If X3 ever comes out, the glowing fissure at the end of X2 was supposed to be the hunters arrival.
That's assuming the Intel on the early bits of the war isn't totally FUBAR already, considering the 'lids. Back the local soldiers up.
Your info isn't bad. Lids mulched Munich in Bradford's first mission. That he had 75% casualties when arriving after the attack was already over is why he got replaced.
[ ] Dr. Lisa Jo. She received her first Doctorate in psychology, then transitioned to the harder sciences over the course of eleven years, picking up four more along the way, ending with two theses on seperate topics at once. She is a sponge, capable of studying anything without complaint, and offering what insights she can along the way. If there is somebody we can expect to understand whatever we put in front of them, Dr. Jo is that person. Unfortunately, she studies and researches all things for curiosity's sake, and while her work will no doubt be the backbone of any scientific breakthroughs, we must rely on either her support staff or the engineering team for most of the innovations that will turn her findings into usable technologies.

[ ] Dr. Moira Vahlen. She is an astrobiologist of the highest caliber, and is as ruthless as they come. She has stated clearly that her particular interests lie in finding ways to adapt alien technology to advance human scientific developments. To that end, there is little she won't do to ensure the XCOM Project's success, and she is certain to attach possible technologies to all of her reports. While she is certainly enthusiastic, there have been some questions regarding her ethical standing; she is brilliant, but if she goes unchecked, we aren't sure what the consequences might be, good or bad.

[ ] Dr. Naomi Hunter. Dr. Hunter is a gene therapist and has written groundbreaking reports on how DNA actually builds the human body, and how it can be altered and adapted to suit our needs. If there is a doctor on this Earth who will cure cancer, it's Dr. Naomi Hunter. It is expected that any autopsies performed or biological technologies studied will lead to new technologies in no time at all, and our medical labs are certain to be top of the line. The downside is that while our Science Team is equipped for all areas of study, Dr. Hunter has had a tendency to select medical doctors for the majority of her team, no doubt slowing any research outside of those fields until more scientists can be hired.
why are they all girls? WSOD is tingling.
Golden blood sprayed out of the little grey as I watched from a distance.
might want to collect that. it contains meld.
Do the implants we've found allow these creatures to perform their manipulations of this new form of energy, or is it something that they are capable of all on their own?
amps.
Dr. Vahlen just gave me an encouraging smile. "Even from our preliminary tests, we believe that much of our research will require live subjects, and more than just our first guest. While we're already looking at a way to knock out the aliens with an electroshock weapon, our earliest concepts are not promising; in order to deliver a sufficient shock without relying on fired electrodes, which would not function at all against the aliens' armor, our soldiers would need to operate at a dangerously close range to incapacitate an alien without killing it."
I never understood this part, personally. Why not a shotgun or grenade launcher to fire a charged sabbot? Or hell, the wire tazer isn't a bad idea, all told. That damned box barely worked on their armor anyway!

Though, hell, if they can made a magic sleep gun, that'll be fun!
I took the hallways at a light run, sprinting down the longer straightaways whenever I wasn't competing with other soldiers or workers for space.
your image is broken.
The exo-suit has a micro rocket launcher on the left arm, and a grapnel hook on the right.)
could hook vahlens shock box up to the grapple.
Vipers/Thin Men freed from alien control: 1 Point
Floaters/Mutons freed from alien control: 1 Point
Sectoids freed from alien control: 1 Point
(Turning any aliens into slaves for humanity instead of the Ethereals, and/or failing to return some semblance of free will to the species in question, doesn't award Points).
Y'know, something about this one just worries me. Particularly the sectoids.

The Vipers/thinmen were noted to be intelligent, loyal without domination, and eloquent, but XCOM2 makes me seriously doubt that.
The Mutons/floaters are, for all intents and purposes, Krogan...but meaner. Trust me, you don't want that spreading across YOUR planet.
The Sectoids were noted as cowardly, petty and cruel. Goblins, essentially. Combine those racial traits with Psionics and that's a bad end.

Basically, achieving these bonuses without also conquering/teraforming 1-3 new worlds are really more a detriment than a boon.
Although.......if you make Oniel cylinders for them and set them orbiting/floating in Jupiter... or further.
Humanity future-proofed against future alien threats: 1 Point
-Working Psionics program built: 1 Point
-Energy Crisis resolved/Elerium needs met: 1 Point
No bonuses for MELD research?
Splicing alone would be MASSIVELY beneficial to making humanity alien proof. Even if you ignored all alien dna and only used earth creatures. Or even just other humans. Norse DNA for easy 2000lbs deadlift bodybuilding, a bit of kenyan for supermarathon, some Polynesian to balance stamina and add breath, take the few thousand people with IQ160 and make that the new Joe Motorpool, fish through all of humanity's digestive systems so that humans can eat literally anything without worrying about food toxins making them depressed sick or anaphylactic.
Granted the amputation and loss of Psionics makes MECT rather unfortunate, but honestly, what sort of idiot wouldn't try to smack those problems out of shens head? Assisted Cyberkinesis would make humanities fighter pilots capable of handling the alien ships without half of the firestorm upgrades, never mind WITH them. And there's nothing that says COOL quite like a jaeger.

Several days passed. I trained my Psionics, still spending my evenings in the Science Labs so they could run passive scans on me while I slept.
You really should just try to make a Psychic choir. It'd unlock alot of people AND help you practice. Imagine being able to perfectly coordinate on the battlefield, COMMANDER or no COMMANDER. Or what sort of Hyjinx the Science and engineering teams could get up to if they could share info and theories without the speed of speech and presentations in the way.
"You're gonna have to get me copies of your show, for whenever I can get a few moments of downtime,"
You could actually do it while working on projects like this. A minor entertaining distraction like that is great for my and many of my coworkers concentration. Like listening to music while you work.
Of course...there are some who work worse with such...

not anymore.
[X] All that Psionics training had led to this.
-[X] My Telekinetic Field would divert the incoming enemy fire, allowing the team to focus on the threats coming in up close and personal.
-[x] Ceathya took a hit. There's no time to ask permission; I needed to Mind Merge her, healing her and getting her back in the game, pronto.
Chryssalid claws do a minimum of 6 damage (max 11).
Wearing Chryssalid armor only gives you a bonus of 4. Titan armor with its thick alien alloy plates give you 10.
Those long bladed claws should also be pretty light. I doubt the whole chryssalid weighs even half as much as those pipes he was juggling earlier.
Minigun does 4 damage with a max of 10 on crit.

With our telekinesis we may have been better served throwing around chryssalid legs like javelins and buzz saws. It should also be harder to miss when you can change the trajectory of your projectile to match their dodge.
That's not even getting into how ridiculously effective swords are in X2.

This magical healer thing is a pretty interesting direction. Just...try not to tell them about Soul Steal.
She took one final breath and grit her teeth. "Am I going to be Agent Smith's guinea pig while he puts me back together, then?"

Bradford's head jerked back, and his mouth slightly open while he tried to form words. She'd caught him off guard, she could tell, which wasn't the reaction she'd been expecting.
This is rather funny for more reasons than her totally misjudging bradford. If she did it, she'd probably get her own Psychic powers before the therapy was complete.

Probably better that she doesn't.
[x] Yes, but only until the headache gets worse.
-[x] Distracting pain.

No sense causing them to explode because you loose concentration when zapping your critically injured friends.

[X] I was going to to take a couple hours poking and prodding at the Muton using my mind. It wasn't very strong willed, so I might be able to find something Vahlen might miss. Win or lose, once I was done-
-[X] I'd ask the others to keep the Muton alive so we could try for more later.

She accepted that. "Just so long as we are able to see and record your talents in person, and to prepare for the other students you insist will be made apparent one day, yes, it makes sense to keep pushing at the boundaries of your abilities when you can." She gave me a considerably less warm smile. "Should we assign a scribe to follow you around and to handle the paperwork you inevitably forget to turn in on the subject?"
The only distraction I'd had was Dr. Vahlen stopping by my cot in the Labs to inform me that they were on the cusp of a breakthrough with Psionics, though it was waiting tantalizingly just out of reach.

"Alright, Dr Vahlen," Commander Williams asked "what have you got for me?"

"Over our studies of the subject, Agent Smith, we believe we have found both the root, and the four pillars of Psionic ability. Corpora Arenacea, N-N Dimethyltryptamine, The Brainwave activity of an active Psionic and...this." She held up a small vial containing a faintly glowing purple sand.

"Corpora Arenacea, more commonly known as 'Brain Sand', is a magnesium phosphate salt produced naturally by the Penal gland. It's been known and studied for nearly 40 years at this point, but before now, no scientist has been able to discern why it is produced, or what the body does with it." Vahlen explained, restrained excitement in her tone. "However! During our study of Agent Smith, the MRI's we performed every time he demonstrated a new ability showed not only increasing concentrations of Brain Sand, but complex structures being formed between the folds of his cerebrum!"

The french woman tapped several times on her data pad and the lab's main screen lit up with a series of images showing just what she'd been talking about. "This alone should not be enough to do...well, anything really, as such calcification has been seen before in patients of significant age. None demonstrated Psionic ability however, in the lab or hints of such in their background. Which brings us to the second pattern, the drug DMT."

"A drug?" Bradford interrupted, sharply. "I know Agent Smith indicated he was given his abilities, but I didn't take them for having come out of a bottle."

It was Dr Shen's turn to speak up and the old man chuckled. "While DMT has been used as a Psychedelic before, it was never a drug of choice outside of a very small set of lab experiments in the early 70's."

Vahlen nodded. "In small quantities, it is produced naturally by the brain. The Penal gland again. Sleep studies show that it is responsible for dreams, religious experience and near death hallucinations. Agent Smith is producing forty two times the normal amount for a REM state, and yet has not once shown signs of psychedelia." She held up the vial of purple sand again. "Through Spinal Fluid extraction we've been able to determine that the two substances combine together under the influence of Psionic energy to form this!"

Shen nodded. "The new substance, when energized, acts as a transistor for what at this point we can only call Zero Point Energy. Zero Point, because Agent Smith is not actually generating the power he uses to perform his feats of Psionic ability, but taking it from an as yet unknown source." The elderly Asian man turns to Vahlen, "if you could bring up the amplifier schematics?" The woman nodded and obliged. "This part, here" he pointed to cylinder in the middle of the device, slightly behind the C shaped collector "contains several dozen large crystals of the modified brain sand; each of them roughly the size of a kidney stone. We currently theorize that the device is not so much an apmplifyer for Agent Smiths abilities as it is a collector, or stater coil, allowing the energy to build up in a loop before being directed in a burst in lieu of gathering the energy in the significantly more fragile brain tissue."

General Williams held up his hand to stall the already long explanation. "That's all well and good, but let's get to what's important here. Can you weaponize it?"

Shen and Vahlen looked at each other for a moment and then nodded.

"I believe I can synthesize the crystals, with some help from Alice." Shen replied. "Besides being an excellent doctor, she's quite the bio-chemist. With the crystals and Moira's data on the Agents branewave activity, I believe I can create a series of...tools. Perhaps even a Psionic screening, awakening and training chambers. With a bit of dedicate research I believe we can begin fielding Psi Operatives alongside Agent Smith in about a month. Or if you're in a hurry, I can perhaps whip us a sleep ray in 3 to 5 days."

The grizled officer nodded slowly. "You said two of the key ingredients are in your head already?" Vahlen nods. "How long would it take if I were to assign the task to Agent Smith?"

"With our current model, 170 hours per subject." Vahlen replied.

"So about a week of constant contact." Bradford repeated. "How deep would he have to go?"

"In theory?" the frenchwoman replied. "This is based around the EEG studies on his mind meld. If he were to find a deeper more streamlined power, perhaps shorter."

Williams spoke up. "Why would it take a month for you, Dr Shen?"

The Engineer rubbed his chin. "A week to excavate a space for the training facility. A week and a half to build it. Ten days in the tank I'm prototyping and then a week training with Agent Smith to ensure they have at least one combat ready ability. Theoretically. We would also need a fair amount of Magnesium and Phosphorus supplements to add to the feeding tube as well as a stock of DMT and accompanying IV, as it cannot be digested."

"And the sleep ray?"

"My nano fabricators should be able to handle most of it." Shen replied. "The trick will be finding the right wave signature to have the greatest affect on the a wide variety of alien minds."

"But this is a tactical decision. I leave the decision up to you, Commander."
