Wolf Spider (Worm) (Complete)

On the note of targets, does anyone have guesses what Bemmy was coming for this visit? Soft targets in the town or capes?

If the Travellers are in town, then it should still be Noelle as the primary target.

Dauntless is another cape to target, because killing him would shatter a lot of hopes. I don't recall any nuclear plants in BB, but wrecking the power grid is consistent with his behavior. He's already killed enough members of Panacea's family including her Love, so this is also a possibility for a very small target.

Ah yes, the Travelers. Who are totally in Brockton Bay.
I mean, lacking information to the contrary, this seems like a single point of departure?

It's pretty reasonable to assume that if we aren't informed otherwise, things in the background are going as per canon to some degree.

More reasonable than 'Oh, Benny was after Cherish, who came to town to team up with Alec and take out Heartbreaker,' and other stuff like that anyway.

I really like this chapter. Very different atmosphere from the usual Leviathan stuff. New Wave is pretty much gone at this point.

I hope that Pelter survives. She seems reasonable and knowing when you're out of your depth is certainly a useful skill for a cape.

She's actually canon.

...sorta.

In that her name is on the Leviathan memorial as dead, and no details exist anywhere else ever about her. So we made her up whole cloth. Short of the name.

Fun Pelter fact! She's actually canon.

Impel / Corey Steffons
Iron Falcon / Brent Woodrow
Jotun /
Kaiser / Max Anders
Manpower / Neil Pelham
Mister Eminent /
Oaf / Wesley Scheaffer
Pelter / Stefanie Lamana
Penitent /
Quark / Caroline Ranson
Resolute / Georgia Woo
Saurian / Darlene Beckman

I pretty much just listed canon names from the memorial to flesh out the independents around town, which is cheating a tiny bit. But getting to actually see some of their stories is really cool, to me.

(Edit: The challenge is that her name is really silly? So we had to make some assumptions based on that, and why she'd have a pretty simplistic name that basically just describes her power. It's possible Wildbow had something else in mind, but I think super throwing powers makes the most sense with that name.)

Taylor: "I'm! Completely! Heterosexual!"
Also Taylor: "Narwhal... so much bra... very athletic... such curves... wow"

The standout for me is her kind of checking out Aisha, and then thinking that the family must have great genes. And her first thought for spreading the antidote to bonesaw's virus is kissing Rachel, and I think she was gonna with Lisa iirc?

And this, my friends, is why a good chunk of all Worm Fics ship Taylor with a girl. Canon only says she is straight but fails to show us that she is.

Look, it's not their fault their GPS got them lost since those things have been on the fritz ever since the Simurgh showed up and had them take a wrong turn at Albuquerque. And now they're trying to find a path and the GPS keeps sending them down country back roads with construction and the murder biological clone factory in the back of the trailer they're pulling won't stop asking for them to pull over and find a rest stop.

It's kind of amazing. It's like the equivelent of a shonen anime series where the main character has a perfunctory heterosexual romance that's with a kinda boring side character who fades out of relevance to the main plot after a while (Brian) and then interacts in all of these intense ways with their buddies/rivals/random people of the same gender in the thick of things along with bonding scenes... and then the author had (or claims to have) no idea how the fandom got the idea the character might be gay or bi.

Actually, Brian isn't that boring? I mean, not as boring as fanon makes him.

There's a reason they're called the Travelers, after all. :p

It's not really that he's boring, it's that Taylor isn't interested in him outside of his body, or it's never really demonstrated that she is? They do try and bond, before he turns her down, but after the S9 thing it's a primarily physical relationship to comfort each other.

Whereas Taylor does get much stronger emotional connections that build up slowly over time with like, everyone else. She spends a lot of time and effort befriending Rachel, she's very involved with Lisa for a lot of the plot, and remembers her to the end, she's sort of a mentor figure to Parian.

I think it's more Wildbow mishandling how he portrays relationships, a bit.

I do hope I'm doing alright/better on the bonding. I mean, Taylor does like Rachel for her body in part. :p

Everything was going to heck, and we could no more stop to save random civilians or their dogs than we could singlehandedly beat Behemoth. We had to get them in range before we dropped them off.

It was loud, but I leaned back. "Did you hear something!" I yelled, mostly because of how loud everything is.

"Not much. Was just curious!" Parian yelled back.

"I made her costume," I said, loudly, pointing at it. "Sewed it myself!"

"Really?" Parian asked. "How?"

"Spiders," I said, as if that explained something, and then I was too busy yelling out orders to the dogs. Left, right, we had to swerve to avoid a car.
That kinda came out of nowhere. I don't get it.
which allowed him to control steel,
Doesn't Kaiser make metal spikes, not control steel?

I liked the chapter, though.

Spikes or blades, and he extruded them out of metal in a controlled way. He can't control them after they're done, although I assume he could do more blades off of the first? I don't know if that's clarified anywhere.

I got my orders and left behind a bizarre scene where Armsmaster was working hand in hand with Kaiser, of all people. Kaiser worked to build the same sort of trap that he'd imprisoned Lung in, some time ago, creating bars of metal between and around each of Leviathan's limbs, a cage tight to the body. Rune and another telekinetic were working to bend the metal from Kaiser's shaken barrier around Leviathan's limbs and face.
It wouldn't last. Leviathan was too big, his tail extended a long distance behind him, and it was thin and supple enough to slip through almost any barrier Kaiser could erect, strong enough that it could bend metal. Leviathan would get free, there could be no illusions on that front.

He did need rune to actually bend it into complex shapes (and some other random cape, thanks for not giving a name wildbow.) But I think Taylor not knowing his exact limits is fair here.

Given that Pelter got healed, told to stay out of the fight, is a new cape lacking support structure who just met up with Arachne and Bitch, and had background beats set up in Othala getting all racist jackass, I think it's safe to assume that there's at least some future story bits involving Pelter.

I liked the chapter, though.

Flawed narrator. I don't think Taylor has analyzed Kaiser's powers up close yet, and 'controls steel' is a sufficient enough misdescription for the PHO wiki.

Unless of course I am mistaken and Taylor had actually met Kaiser in this fanfic, which is possible since I am keeping track of something like 60 fanfics atm.

It's the kind of name that screams "low end dinky powers". Which is what the description sounded like, although we'll have to see them in a context other than you know, against Behemoth, before we're sure they're not the second coming of Sting or something.

I do hope I'm doing alright/better on the bonding. I mean, Taylor does like Rachel for her body in part. :p

The only fanfics I can name that are doing as well as this fic at romance and bonding between Taylor and another character than this are... um...

*looks at the relationships of Taylia, Legion and Heredity that only comes off as rushed, creepy, disturbing and outright unhealthy*

*looks at Finely Honed Blade where she has a (possibly Yandere) secret admirer and Hearts Aflutter where she has a Yandere stalker*

*looks at T and Kid Win in Manager that doesn't quite count because T is not Taylor even if they are cute together*

*looks at Intrepid where Taylor and Elle are fucking adorable but still does not count because that relationship has them closer to best friends / sisters than an actual romantic relationship*

*looks at the monstrosity that is the Silencio shipping chart*

*looks at Gambit which did amazing but doesn't quite count since Taylor doesn't have the issues canon Taylor has and so isn't quite the same person *

*Looks at Crouching Tiger where Taylor just got turned down for the 487th time*

*looks at all the post GM Fics where Taylor magically has a boyfriend*

*looks at all the new/dead Fics where Taylor never developed a relationship, or the fic went dead Midway through it*

*looks at every Ack relationship ever*

*looks at Canon*

...maaaaybe Deputy in the brief moment that relationship lasted.

Shaper: "Alright, Ames, this is your big chance. You've been getting more and more daring lately, so I know you can do this! Use that big mammal brain of yours and get creative, cure that hussy's prion disease! Bonus points for solving the logistics."

Amy: "Skitter, I figured out a solution. I don't do brains, but you can spread my counteragent through your bodily fluids!"

Shaper: "You fucking lesbian, do you want my help putting your sister back together or not? I swear to god, if you can't stop thinking about swapping spit for five seconds then I'll start getting creative-"

Will do.

How much LotR do I need to know?

Umm

Sauron was once called Annatar, which means Lord of Gifts, and the poem thing with the Rings;

"Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie."

And that pretty much covers it so far.
