Wolf Spider (Worm) (Complete)

My powers were somewhat useful on the offensive, but the long range and the way I could monitor everyone at once meant that, especially if I figured out how to listen in or tell other details.
Another awesome chapter, it was sweet seeing Taylor trying to work her way out of the awkwardness and always appreciate more Lisa even if I don't know how Rachel would react to seeing them together. I've been reading a lot of your stories recently and the above is something I've been noticing is quite common, sentences that don't seem to finish the point being made. It's not just me right? You don't actually include what the long range and monitoring capabilities mean, you start a tangential point but don't conclude.

Fuck, fixed.

"Uh-huh. I'd like to meet her sometime," Dad said, "you could invite her over for dinner."

"Sure, why not?" I asked, the reasons just lining up the moment I said it. Starting with the fact that I wasn't sure how good of table manners she had, moving onto the fact that taking her to meet my Dad wasn't going to convince her that I wasn't interested, and ending in the fact that it'd be a total disaster in general.

...

"My Dad wants to talk to you sometime. Probably doesn't believe you exist, or thinks you're a bad influence. I just wanted to get that out, tell you. So we can figure out how to avoid it."

Rachel frowned, then shrugged, "Sure."
I cannot emphasize how much I hope that this actually leads to Rachel being invited over for dinner to meet Danny. Much like the rest of the interactions between Taylor and Rachel, I imagine it'll be a combination of downright heartwarming and also absolutely mortifying for Taylor.

I just love how Taylor's fumbling around the issue of her sexuality. If I close my eyes I can practically hear a few acquaintances who said pretty much the same things...before finally admitting it.

The dog training scenes were adorable...but is it me, or is Rachel training Taylor to be more aggressive?

I wonder how Danny would like Rae?

Obviously he's worried she's getting Taylor into drugs or something, but I assume he'd still be polite. Unless he realizes they have a thing and gives a shovel speech?

Which wow, that would either set Rachel off or basically do nothing and I'm not sure which. I think she'd get the motive because it's how she acts with new people sometimes, but it's still someone threatening her and Rachel doesn't roll over for that.

"If you hurt her I'll kill you."
"Sounds fair. If somebody else hurts her I'll let you help when I kill them."
"... Taylor I approve of your girlfriend."

This made me snort-laugh really loud because it was my exact reaction to Danny's question. That aside, I hope this happens and I hope Danny and Rachel hit it off and make things super awkward for Taylor.

When two people hung out that much, it usually meant something.
Ah Taylor, that lack of self awareness is really something.

Also, that's a very nice plan Lisa has that she thought of entirely on her own.
... I totally didn't spot this and now that you've pointed this out I'm sad because there's a really obvious endgame here, if Coil doesn't need to burn the Undersiders in this reality. However, I do kind of look forward to the absolute shit storm Rachel would unleash on the people who tried to hurt pretty much the one human being she actually cares about.

All in all, I really liked this chapter. Taylor's confused and increasingly weak denials were pretty much exactly what I wanted to result from that scene, and it's really funny to me that she's pretty much the only person in her life (I suspect including Danny) that doesn't think she's attracted to Rachel.

One minor typo I noticed:
"Don't' say that before you try," Rachel said.
There's an errant closing single-quote after "Don't" here.

Well with the right attitude people are as easy to train as dogs.

It retroactively made everything worse, and combined with how much people at school hung out at the mall, it meant that I only went when I had to. I'd seen Emma here, sometimes, trying on clothes with Sophia, laughing land joking and happy, and once I'd even managed to do so without her spotting me, and she'd seemed like the same Emma as before, the Emma I'd liked. But harder, crueler, just little edges to the jokes she made, and the opinions she gave.
This one paragraph broke my heart. I've always hated Taylor's backstory with Emma and this pretty much summarizes why what happened was so horrible.

That went better than I was worried it might ... so yay on that front. And Lisa is going some pretty solid advice on how to best abuse her powers ... thinking about a Rachel and Taylor team-up is pretty scary, massive information in the area, and when Taylor really gets going she can do her own take on Grue ... except the darkness is also biting you, and of course It Is Dark Here, You May Be Mauled By a Hellhound.

Random snip idea. Some sort of Evil Master Rachel who trains people like she trains her dogs.

Rachel could totally train people like she does her dogs!

She sort of tries it on Barker and Biter, remember? And her other minions fell in line pretty easily, too.

Also, my mental image for this was Rachel smacking people with a newspaper, and this is your fault.

New reader. I love this, but I have to ask: why is Taylor more competent and well-adjusted in this fic? She was prepared enough to get a cellphone, willing to do so despite her general disdain (unless I missed something). She has "retreat against stronger foes" as a tactic, even if that's not what she ends up doing. Most notably is that she apparently kicked her way out of her locker in a few minutes, instead of being trapped for hours. Also, in canon, she had to be institutionalized for a bit because she couldn't figure out to shut off the inputs from every bug in her range, but apparently this wasn't a problem here? Is this related to the fact her range fluctuates much more than in canon (holding steady at about 2.5 to 3 blocks unless she was feeling trapped)?

Because at no point in canon does it say she was trapped in the locker for hours, as far as I can tell. And she still had to be institutionalized.

And she was thinking that she *could* have kicked her way out of her locker but she panicked.

Edit: People give over-the-top locker times because they think that 'only' being trapped for a dozen minutes or less is somehow not cool enough or something. Ten minutes or whatnot in a tiny locker filled with bugs and shit and used tampons is a subjective eternity.

Wolf Spider Timeline, Arc 1
Timeline of Arc 1 with weird commentary from Nemo because she needed a way to keep track of what was going on when:

Ruff 1.1 Takes place on April 15th. Taylor finally has the courage to go out heroing, and runs into Bitch during a dogfight bust.
Ruff 1.2 Is on April 16th.
Ruff 1.3 Still April 16th for the opening bit with Danny. (Saturday Night, because Danny drinks more and the 15th was the end of the school week.)
After meeting the Empire on patrol, Taylor wakes up the next day (17th) and goes to visit Rae again.
On Monday, the 18th, Taylor goes to school and talks with Greg a little, then after school brings a book to read to Rachel.
On Tuesday, the 19th, the Trio is awful to Taylor. Taylor mentions going out on a patrol that night (this doesn't get detailed? I hadn't noticed. She mentions tuesday being bad and wanting to patrol, scene with Rachel and christmas dog, and then on Wednesday morning she's tired from patrol.)
Wednesday morning, the 20th, Taylor is tired from Patrol, checks PHO a bit, and sits closer to Rachel, but not quite snuggling.
Thursday, the 21st, when Tay visits Rae they are pretty much actually snuggling.
Friday, the 22nd, Lisa shows up at the shelter with her band of misfits. Taylor is very uncomfortable with a smiling, pretty girl.
Ruff 1.4 continues from that Friday, with Taylor meeting the Undersiders and negotiating a bit.
The next day, Saturday the 23rd, Taylor wakes from a nightmare she's already forgotten, and goes over to talk with Rachel about what happened on fri. They read a story about a smart dog and a dumb human.
Ruff 1.5 continues from that Saturday, with Rachel and Taylor finishing the book. She comes home to Danny and explains about a fight with Rae, and then goes out on patrol and meets the wards.
Ruff 1.6 starts from that Saturday, but mostly for narration. We get an abbreviated timeskip. 'I visited Rachel on Sunday, and then every evening for the rest of the week. ' The next specific date mentioned is a Wednesday (27th), where Taylor and Rachel play video games.
There's a large fight between the Merchants and the E88 on a Friday (29th). Taylor helps out, captures peoples, and then goes home to Rachel. Rachel pops her question.
