Wolf Spider (Worm) (Complete)

Considering your latest comment, I should have seen this coming :'(

What's the update schedule on this fic by the way?
I might really want to know what happens next, you see.

Edit: I wonder if Danny will go to the cops or the Protectorate? And what he'll even tell them... "My daughter is a cape and ran away from home with her girlfriend who's a bad influence. No, I don't know her name or her address..."
On the other hand, just googling Arachne might turn up Hellhound, aka Rachel Lindt, dog person extraordinaire. This... Probably wasn't the way Taylor was hoping her dad would find out about things.

What do you know, teenagers finally getting attention they appreciate make reckless decisions.

I'm surprised by the lack of chase though.

I could be wrong due to fic juggle, but I don't think he know's she's a cape.

Bite 3.6

I paused, the stairs creaking as Dad stood up. He looked like a mess. "Taylor," he said. "What are you doing?"

He sounded like he knew, and I said. "You can't stop me."

"Yes I can. You're my daughter. Yes I can." The second time he said it, his voice raised all the way almost into a shout as he stepped forward. "Go up to your room."

Bugs were already gathering, and I had them fly out in front of him. He took a step back, almost tripping over his own feet, his eyes red and hard as I began to walk towards the door.

Then he stepped forward, right as I gathered a few bees. They buzzed in front of him, and he stopped, realizing that this was something off. Something wrong.

"Taylor?" he asked, again.

"I'm leaving," I said, and my words seemed to echo in the swarm of bees I had, in a way I hadn't expected. "I'll call you. But this isn't right, and it isn't fair. You're not going to give it a chance, and I…"

I trailed off, not sure what to say. The decision had come fast, but it felt like this had been building up for a long time. I'd been withdrawing from Dad, and him from me, for way too long to stop now.

"Bye."

"Taylor!" he yelled, but didn't step towards me, didn't stop me as I threw the door open and stormed out into the night.

*******

A/N: Thanks to @NemoMarx.

If he mentions the bug powers, they already know what bad influences Arachne might have. Not like they haven't had the same concern as him for a while. :p

Welp. I had hope there for a second.

I can see a lot of ways for things to go wrong now that Danny knows that Taylor's a cape. Finding out who exactly Rae is, is also a possibility. After all there aren't that many young female capes with dogs in the city.

Taylor and Rachel holding hands is an adorable image, and the little talk they had makes me think maybe Rachel is also a bit insecure, or at least unsure of what Taylor wants.

Oh no, Taylor's relationship with dear old dad is sliding into the gutter D: Also she needs to spend time with people who aren't Rachel, she's slowly forgetting her more human reactions. But the budding romance is very cute.

My ceiling was not particularly interesting,

Few ceilings are.

I didn't know why it felt so vital, but I just wanted to get to her.

Uh, you sure she doesn't have a Master rating? For humans?

I didn't know the human body had that much blood,

Few people do, until it's all outside of the body.

no doubt staining into the ground.

How do you get Dragon blood out of concrete, by chance?

but she'd known where to hit me.

Fortunately, you also know how to. Nothing says surprise like a freak case of Lyme disease....

I had a hankering for some flapjacks."

Riiight.

"Can I have one, maybe? Or two. I don't want to ruin my diet," I said.

Silly, most diets allow those.

"Why there and not here?

Because she won't be doing much sleeping, I suspect.

If I trailed off, would he comment on it?

He's not that socially inept.

"Taylor, I'm worried."

Well, maybe you should've done something earlier. Have some Union buddies have a chat with pipe wrenches and the principal, perhaps.

Hey, we appreciate makeup!

"M-maybe, but it's not like you're a ball of energy either."

Dogs aren't usually good in the AM.

But the Protectorate probably thinks I'm a villain now.

Knowing them, they're doing up a smear piece or dozen....

I didn't feel guilty about cutting a guy's arm off

Eh, it grows back.

Weird, why is this here?

But wasn't this view too complete to be intimate?

Nah, not really.

"You're really fucking smart."

Yes, she is.

but… turns out that people like dogs."

And hate Nazis, so win-win.

There was my backpack, and then I had a travel bag or two.

Well, guess you're moving in a bit ahead of schedule.

And I don't know how I'd get through three or four days without her, let alone the rest of my life.

I repeat, we sure Bitch ain't Mastering her?

"Well, for the next two years, I'll need to. I have school."

"Fuck it," Rachel said.

"I can't just--"

"Get a GED or whatever," Rachel said, and then, her voice a little lower. "You're really fucking smart." She sounded odd when she said that, vulnerable in a way I sorta understood. I knew that she sometimes felt that people with more education were mocking her. But I'd never do that.

"I mean," I said, staring at her. The truth was, I hadn't really thought about dropping out of high school. At least, not seriously. It just wasn't a thing that was done, even if you were going to get a GED. Because that's what people did: you went to high school for four years, and then you went to college.

Rachel being confident about Taylor is still really romantic in a subtle way, and I like it a lot.

But her charm didn't seem to work on Rachel, so maybe Lisa had given up on trying.

"So I'd rather help you," Lisa said. "Both of you. You're good for each other and--"

"Bullshit. What's your game?" Rachel asked, looking frustrated.

"My game is simple. I don't want Arachne here to be unhappy. I think you help each other. I suspect she'd be in a far worse place if she hadn't found you," Lisa said. "Am I not allowed to have feelings?"

"I admit I'm suspicious too."

"Well, I'm helping you now. My advice is that if you're trying to go straight, find a way to make everything that Rachel did look nicer." Lisa frowned, "Maybe play up the dog angle? Caring for dogs is pretty popular, as long as you ignore…"

I think this is getting overshadowed, a bit, but Lisa is totally shipping them. :p And doing a pretty good job of it too! Although Rachel clearly do

I repeat, we sure Bitch ain't Mastering her?

The real master effect is love! It's what got Regent in the end, after all.

No, I was actually genuinely curious why you thought so and etc, etc?

I think the biggest item for me has been the "baring teeth" references and internalizing some of Rachel's reactions to people smiling, though I think those have actually gone down with time myself. They seemed more prevalent shortly after they really started hanging together a lot until she caught herself doing it. I don't know that I would really say she's forgetting her human reactions over time as a result, particularly given that she noted Lisa forgetting just in this chapter.

Danny's reactions in this have really not been up to par honestly-- the heavy drinking immediately lost him a lot of my sympathy in having to deal with Taylor's deceptions and behavior. (Which I suspect was intentional.) That said, it isn't likely to prevent them from believing him if he does go to the Protectorate. Given how suspicious he is of Rachel and that drinking potentially compromising his judgement, it is feasible that he will out his daughter like that and I can't see that doing good things for Taylor's attempts to stay a hero and get Rachel into that line as well.

I can promise with total honesty that she'll be interacting with quite a few people who aren't Bitch in the near future. :D

Technically speaking, there's two parts to Rachels socialization stuff. Firstly, her brain is tweaked to replace some social processing and whatever. This is the part that's obvious enough that even Lisa noticed it. (Interestingly, this doesn't mean that Rachel can't smile. She still remembers that they're a thing, and in canon she even uses one to express happiness! Just uh, really badly.)

"Sore and rich," Bitch spoke. I glanced at her and saw her grinning. It was disquieting. I'd only ever seen her sullen and hostile, so any smile would be kind of creepy. It was worse than that. Hers was the kind of smile you'd see from someone who had never seen one before and was trying to replicate one from what they'd read in books. Too many teeth showing, I suppressed a shiver and focused on the work.

Secondly, she hasn't needed it in a long time, and she's built up a persona that doesn't require it. She's gruff and rough around the edges and she uses her fists more than her words, and if she thinks someone's mocking her she doesn't try to work out if that's true or not, she escalates to threatening them or fighting.

The latter is more relevant for bleeding into Tay, I think. Shard shenanigans aren't contagious, but habits and patterns and other social stuff spread pretty fast, yes?

Unless you do Freaky Friday!

Unless you do Freaky Friday!

Well, yes. :p I can't imagine Taylor would take to being in Rachel's head very smoothly, especially since she isn't a learned actress here.

It's important to remember that in canon, Taylor put a lot more emphasis into being a spy and infiltrating villains early on, and even when she fully committed to it, she used those skills to make herself more intimidating and a better supervillain.

Here, she's learned different skills, like how to ride and command doggos! So that changes quite a bit of her character, honestly. Canon!Taylor learned how to instill fear from Bakuda, learned how to manipulate people for respect from Brian, etc. She had many role models. Her role models here I leave as an exercise to the reader.

(Also, Freaky Friday shenanigans and shards: Does swapping into Regent mean that you get his emotional deadening, or not? Either answer is fun! Alec suddenly being emotional is always heartwarming.)

You're talkin' swapping bodies, walk a mile in each other shoes, maybe dynamic reversals when Taylor's all strong now? I love it, it's in the movie!

Rachel going to school and meeting the Trio!

Taylor trying to pretend to be an Undersider, but she has to act like Rachel and also she's really disoriented from how hard Pack!shard is messing with her head!

And of course the poor dogs are very confused.
