What's the most Cringeworthy Alternate History you've ever read?

Continued the Holocaust to the point where the surviving Jewish population of Europe is smaller than the present-day population of the Falkland Islands
*Googles*
Jesus Christ! Yeah that would hard to deny or revise unless people think the Nazis evenly distributed the European Jew population across the entire planet somehow :V.

I just picked up the 7th carrier series. An IJN flattop who got stuck in ice and couldn't join the fight until 1983. At first, they're confused why the steamer they sunk wasn't escorted. But they quickly dismiss it. The IJN probably sunk all the USN's destroyers by now, there aren't any american warships left to pull escort duty!

I'm sorry what? A WW2 carrier got frozen?
The basic (and formulaic: the structure stays much the same from book to book) plot has a fictional fourth ship of the Yamato class, the Yonaga, being trapped in ice just before it's supposed to join the Pearl Harbor strike force in 1941. Forty-two years later, the crew finally manages to break out of the icy trap, and sails forth to complete its mission. At the same time, China launches a satellite system designed to disable jet and rocket engines worldwide. One thing leads to another, and Yonaga and her crew of geriatric latter-day samurai become the Free World's first line of defense against an Arab/Muslim alliance led by Libya
WHAT?! I've been on the kancolle forum long enough to why that first sentence is stupid

That's more "pulp technothriller" than "alternate history", even if it does have a past divergence. To me it feels like calling Jerry Ahern's The Survivalist alternate history because the US put Adolf Hitler's body in a giant Vault-style facility in upstate New York (don't ask me why they did this) long before the events of the series.

Accurately describing what Germany would've done if allowed isn't revenge porn.

The rest of the world taking brutal action to make sure that Germany doesn't have the opportunity to do it again is just the logical conclusion of the premise.

No, but having what could be described as Scorched Earth campaign the Four Horse would gaze upon with gleeful approval is in my opinion. Germany's actions were beyond the pale, to put it mildly, but this, well literally the only thing worse would've been if the Allies had carried some sort of deliberate war of extermination against the Germans.

As I said it felt more like a power fantasy about a world ruled by a trigger happy Anglo-American hegemony. Maybe if it had been written in a different style besides that detached, matter of fact, sterile narrative that might have helped. It doesn't that as others have pointed the plausibility of a lot of the events of the book is pretty questionable which can reinforce these perceptions.

Well, socked in by ice.

I guess. But it's better than rambling about Trump. And it's just so awful I needed to talk about it.

Tell us, what would've been a reasonable way to deal with Germany?

I mean, I'm just wondering how the fuck China apparently managed to make a system to "disable jet and rocket engines worldwide," in 1983. That is, to my knowledge, about as impossible as, say, disabling the ability for gasses to diffuse (which would cause a lot of other problems, incidentally) while simultaneously just turning off the whole of chemistry. If that's possible, all the other shit is positively tame.

Also, in the second book, Mikasa is reactivated as a monitor.
EDIT: Oh, and I forgot the best part. The carrier trapped by the ice is no ordinary carrier but a thousand foot Yamato class conversion.

The satellite system apparently is heat seeking lasers that target very hot engines from jets but not prop planes.

...If you have that, at that point, don't you basically win? Like, if it can destroy, apparently, literally all jets in active flight, missiles are a thing of the past as well. MAD is dead. Etc.

Stop: Stop
I wouldn't consider getting married in a Peruvian lama hut* to be any of those things

Especially since both have the same enemy, international banking which is a diverse lot these days

stop Your posting throughout this thread has been peppered with antisemitic dogwhistles, suggesting various conspiracy theories and racist notions. You have pleaded ignorance, but I cannot simply take you at your word. I can only judge your posts by their contents. That being the case, I have issued you a 25 point infraction and a three day threadban for your various posts throughout the thread.

There are fan threads?!

There were (not on this site mind). Well there probably still are on the website that he fled to, but it has closed registration due to paranoia.

1) The rise of the SS as described by him makes no sense in the AANW situation. The SS reached the position it did in the Nazi state because the Wehrmacht failed to deliever. In the AANW-verse the Germans won and there is no way in hell the Wehrmacht would be dissolved.

Not to mention that the Wehrmacht would never have ALLOWED itself to be dissolved. The Nazi empire was built on the principle of tons of competing power-structures, but of all of them the Wehrmact was the one that could collectively at any time have kicked the whole sandcastle over.

Yeah, about the treatment of Germany.

...

Even if you disagree with the A4's postwar attitude towards Germany, it's kind of understandable how they arrived at their conclusions.

Let me put it this way: Morgenthauing Germany may have made sense in 1960.

Ten years passes.

1970. No change.

Ten years passes.

1980. No change.

Ten years passes.

1990. No change.

THAT is the problem. The ability of the A4 to maintain a head of rage and determination to spend ludicrous amounts of money on the military against no clear threat. And the ability of them to view the deindustrialized, beaten down, depopulated (and it would be, because holy shit any German with any skills would have tried to emigrate anywhere) Germanies as still being a threat of any sort.

In fact I would argue that the total population of the germanies in this TL should probably be 50 million or less.

That's actually one of the more plausible things given just how wacky OTL Chinese (ultra)nationalists were. The thing is, such people never reached the reins of power in our history due to cooler heads screwing them over in their own pursuit of power.

There is no rational reason for them to gain power in the AANW verse either. The reason we got them in North Korea was that basically they turned Imperial Japaneseism into communism, changed the Emperor into the Kims, and made Koreans the master race. The dynamics just aren't the same in China! It's this weird hatred of China that is just absurd.

And India is even weirder, since a lot of the problems they had in OTL was due to things like the pseudo-socialist policies and the permit Raj, and I see no reason whatsoever that would be different here.

There is this massive flip without any good justification.

I mean come on. "Hey we use kinetic weaponry against student protests" Like...send a tank battalion?

Not to sound flippant, but maybe the problem was that the Chinese did it before IRL? I'm his mind, he could write it off as 'bad'.

Of course, I dunno what 'dropping shit from space' would rank as in his mind.

Note: They had risen up in open rebellion (due to being fed up by being treated like crap for decades on end), but said rebellion was quickly crushed as a bunch of A4, Polish and Russian forces moved in. They had basically surrounded Stettin and was about to take it, when they were pulled back so it could be utterly wrecked by orbital bombardment instead.

Is it too much to hope for that this was at least the point at which people started thinking they'd gone too far?
