Bleach always came off as a Shonen to me. But yeah, the biggest Magical Girl thing for me was the red head who got faeries that had special powers. It made me sad when she became mostly useless for all intents and purposes in very short order.
 
Well, there's the 'purify Hollows instead of killing them', the 'ordinary high school kid gets granted powers by a being who needs her- well, his help to do their job', the whole monster of the week thing…

To be more on-topic, both Kill la Kill and Bleach use a lot of the conventions of the Magical Girl genre in a decidedly non-standard way.

    • This episode made me very happy.

    Kill La Kill Ep22

    - Warning: Blood contents under pressure.

    - [Silent Hill Intensifies]

    - Viral's back from his swim, somehow. He's even got some seaweed on his DTR. I'll chalk this one up to the in built jetpack.

    - That was probably one of the best transformation sequences in the whole show and it was like five seconds long. That build up though.

    - Yessssssssss, yessssssssssss, make that thing feel fear.

    - Evil NANO was moving like an amoeba in that shot.

    - That purple X that Red Stripe just backhanded looked like it was made with crayons.

    - NANO bursting out in tears had me on the floor in stitches for some reason I don't really get.

    - She really has come a long way. In episode 13 Glorious Leader's sword went straight through NANO, now the Scissor Blades don't make a scratch. A they've been wrecking Life Fibers left and right.

    - Mako... just... -sigh-... relevant in the most literal sense:


    - SHE'S BACK!!!... and snot balloon still has her clothes on upside down.

    - That look, it suits you Night Terror. It suits you well. You should try being in complete agony and fear more often. Mostly because I find your screams enjoyable.

    - I spoke to the therapist again and he told me it was totally okay that I rewatched the part where Night Terror's arms popped off like twenty times.

    - Well, Shades finally did something. SHE FUCKING SAVED NIGHT TERROR FROM JUSTICE!!! Fuck you writers, fuck you.

    - Although the subtitles disagree with me it sounded like Do No Evil said the same thing seven or eight times when he grabbed the suction cup things.

    - Night Terror's 'smile' was going into her eye in that shot.

    - I love how nonchalant Shades is about the fire hydrate of blood slamming into her face.

    - That transition between her being actively unhinged and her being freakishly calm about it was beyond unnerving.

    - About time someone threw Glorious Leader's brand of Darwinism back in her face.

    - Do No Evil must have used Harden before taking that punch.

    - HAHAHAHAHA his face is completely punched in!

    - Red Stripe had an epiphany moment without the help of the Hallelujah Light or Mako. Bravo Red Stripe, bravo.

    - So she was using the minions to make her more powerful. Man, a lot of my jokes are coming back to bite me in the ass.

    - The strand of hair in from of Glorious Leader's face makes it look like she has a mustache.

    - The wind changed directions! :o What does it mean?! :D

    - The look on Nani Sore?!'s face in the dinner shot.

    - It's okay. You can let it out NANO. Red Stripe's their for you.

    - Night Terror has fully embraced her inner psychopath

    - "You're a true Nudist" "..." "That was a compliment." "Whatever, moving on."

    - When did the Ritsuko MK II get a NANO suit? I'm guessing he made it for himself.

    - You're just jealous he beat you to the punch Nani Sore?! aren't you?

    - Easier said than done, that.

    - I'm with Nani Sore?!, avoiding death takes priority over exposition.

    - After watching the dual transformation sequence I got the funny thought of a demon and a god going off to war together. It does not help that those are their main motifs.

    - Combat Forms? Quick, Do No Evil, use the suction cups!

    - Or Snot Balloon can handle it. That works too. Why'd they give her the first NANO suit though?

    • It shouldn't 'arm her. If anything thinks it's going to far, they should just raise their hand. I know we're always like dropping armfuls of bad puns on her, but if it really bugged her, she would have taken the situation in hand.
     
    I was going to start listing off arm puns like crazy, but you two already took them all before I got here. I guess you could say that I'm
    stumped.

    Slow down, we can't handle that many puns at once. Besides, you're grabbing all the good ones and other people would like to try their hand at it.
     
    Yeesh, I cant think of any puns. I feel like the Black Knight after he met King Arther while he was searching for the Holy Grail.
     
    I'll just cut you off there. So many people come to Kill la Kill unarmed for the puns they'll inevitably face. I would lend a hand, but I saw what happened to the last person to do that.
     
    Yeah, it seems like everybody was happy to see Nui having to foot the bill for all the 'arm she's done. You've really got to give Trigger a hand for that scene.
