Water slide

The name change thing's a bit baffling, really. I'm fairly sure that even in the 80s, most functional countries with working and non-corrupt beaurocracies made it possible to change your name simply by filling out a form, paying some sort of processing fee, and waiting a few days/weeks for it to go through...

I mean, if he's going to accept a method other than the culturally required (supposedly? Might be fannon) "Only the person who named me can change my name" bit, Hikaru's connections are sort of wasted there...
Well, ok, not so much if he's not a japanese citizen and isn't going back to wartime China, which is admittedly understandable now that i think about it, so using those connections actually makes sense... but it didn't when i was reading it, so this post is a thing.

You are assuming that Taro is not an idiot, thats a pretty major assumption.

Hes a great fighter, pretty good at traps common sense though? little to none.

Idle thought.

It's one thing to teach some stuck-up genius.
You break down their arrogance, force-feed them some life lessons, then guide them into becoming a decent human being.

It's a whole other thing to teach the mediocre.
To take someone who doesn't really have talent, and hammer in fundamentals until they can build up to something great.

The first one is annoying, the second one is frustrating.

Ever tutor some one? A medicre student who works hard is a lot easier to teach then an arrogant brat who thinks they already know every thing.

The update is in, going to write the next POV and then count the number of comments in three hours.

If you want to win talk away.

Huh....wouldn't have thought his parents have something to hide. Ones a curse and another is identity.

So, a mass exodus of Gosunki's. Will the government take advantage of this? Kind of like a government sponsored magical education program?

I finished and sent in the mothers side of the interlude their will be a grand edit.

i only regret that putting them together robs me out of giving 1 more like.

Loved both parent's stories. the mother's felt especially powerfull to me given it's very raw realism. thank you cherico for all those little gems.

Gosunkugi is hard to find at school and it's maddening. I can smell taste his ki, it's gotten stronger somehow, becoming more powerful, more intoxicating. I smiled as he approached.

"Gosunkugi-san, why haven't I seen you in my classroom?"

He shrugged, I felt a little weak in my knees.

"I've already passed college courses, really I'm only here to continue my apprenticeship with Sensei."

My heart beat fast. Of course, he was a genius, it was only to be expected, my mouth felt dry. Then I noticed a hooligan doing some graffitiin the halls, I sighed at the interruption and taught him a lesson in respect.

He has a girlfriend now, I silently seeth as I watch them hold hands, I was about to intervene when.

"Back off."

The taste of dusty books was back, I turned around.

"I don't know what your talking about."

"I know about your little stalking habbit, I let it go because, well I honestly have an incredibly low opinion of you as is, but if you interfer with my students love life and his happiness I will intervene."

A thrum of power went out and I felt scared.

"She's a bad match, he can do so much better, I'm just helping him."

"That's up to Ru, not to you."

He looked at the girl with the giant bow.

"Also she's a good cook, has a decent temperment, not bad looking for a girl her age. She might not be very educated but she would be a decent mother."

"She's a middle school dropout."

"Who has her own successful business, I did my homework, the girl isn't a gold digger."

"He can do better."

Macguffin raised an eyebrow.

"At this age? No not really, most girls around this time are honestly pretty damned shallow, boy are too of course ,but Ru's one of those boys who isn't going to get popular with women until he gets established."

He shrugged.

"He does have a few fangirls of course, including one elementary schoolgirl who used to have cancer, but thats probably not going to pan out."

I grimaced as they kissed, I moved foward and was stopped by Macguffin grabbing me by the collar.

"It's none of your business Hinako, school's over and it's off grounds, let the boy have his romance."

"It's wrong."

He didn't release his grip.

"God gave you one life to live, don't try to live somebody elses life, live your own."

"HE'S MINE!"

I was tossed to the ground, MacGuffin loomed over me.

"Ok now...now I'm pissed."

I felt fear, overwheilming fear, I might have peed myself.

"I could forgive the control freak tendencies, it's who you are unfortantly, but Hikaru is a student and you are a teacher. Going after a student is a breach of trust."

"I-"

"I heard exactly what you said woman, and I'm not going to allow it. Hikaru still has two years left of highschool, two. If you still have this obession after he graduates, I will allow you to chase him. I doubt you will end up catching him but I will allow it, but you will not violate this sacred trust, do you understand?"

I looked away.

"I do."

He turned around.

"Go home and clean yourself up, I recommend a cold shower."

He walked away and I went home, I took the cold shower and stared up at the ceiling, two years wasn't that long... I could wait.

Seven Lucky Gods
Seven Lucky Gods

We hovered around the radio, the twins continued to play yet another game of Go. We were the Seven Lucky Gods, the leaders of a small kingdom in the Chinas, yes China in plural. Our kingdom, or more like city state, dates back to the Tang dynasty where we were small enforcers of the emperor's will. The dynasty ended and we went west into the mountains. We remain here to this day. That's pretty much how most martial arts kingdoms get their start, some badasses or some cult that pissed off the new regime and went into hiding.

Yes we do have a radio, my names Fukurokuju, not the orginal one, or the actual lucky god, it's more a title then anything else. I'm also the only one here who understands russian at all. Which is why they're looking at me.

"What are they saying?"

"The soviets say that they took Beijing, the communists say they're going to retake it. The government's already moved into the south."

I grimaced.

"And... Beijing is gone, the soviets claim the communists nuked it to destroy the Red army."

"Isn't the alliance supposed to prevent that?"

I shrugged.

"They had millions of scientists, spies and the material. Trying to stop them from getting nukes wasn't possible. That said it could be that the soviets are lying and they nuked the city because it was easier, thats what the comrades are saying."

"So what does this mean for us?"

I shrugged, we were pretty out of the way from the main fighting, both countries were now engaged in total war.

"We get to rest and rebuild, the comrades will engage in guerilla warfare against the soviets and the soviets will commit massacre after massacre, which will create more guerillas."

"And then what?"

"We let them fight each other, hopefully the strain of the war causes the soviets to collapse and weakens the comrades enough that the alliance can destroy them."

"Then what?"

Ideally we put our problems aside and rule China as a martial arts elite of a new dynasty, but that wasn't going to happen.

"Then we retreat back to our holes and another dynasty forms and the cycle continues."

I turned the radio station.

"And?"

"America has made it known that they consider the sino-soviet war an internal matter and will not intervene on either side."

"And what does that mean for the war?"

"It's going to get worse, much worse, the gloves will come off. The soviets tried to end it in one fell swoop and they failed, now they're in for a very long war and they know it. The comrades have access to some very nasty things, the soviets also have access to some very nasty things. This war's already six months in and I would honestly be surprised if it didn't last more then five."

I felt tired, we all did, I turned off the radio.

"I'm going to get some dinner."

I grabbed some rice and some pickled vegetables, we're all sick of them but that's the only thing we can eat, due to a mixture of extreme poverty and a specialized ki training regiment. It sucks but thems the breaks. After that I went to bed, tomorrow I would probally do some training, some farm work and then listen to the radio again.

It's funny after losing so many friends to the comrades, you think I would be happy that they're all dying but really? I just feel tired and used up.

I'd like an interlude of MacGuffin picking out his next jump and the start of it. Would be interesting and maybe funny depending on what is next on the chain. The Overlord (LN/M/A) jump would be quite funny especially if he starts in the Throne room.
