Warhammer Fantasy: Thirteen Tolls - An Apocalypse Quest

The vibes continue to be absolutely immaculate. The tension of everything getting gradually more and more wrong is fantastic.

[x] Provide funerary services.
[x] Seek mental help. (Lazarette [Shallyan])
[x] Pray.
[x] Investigate the Tower. [P]
[x] Go to the address in the Shambles.

[x] Buy a weapon. [A]

I think that being a priest of Morr should mean we actually fulfill our priestly duties. Funerary services, prayer and, yes, taking care of our mind-blasted insane colleagues.

The vote isn't open yet.

Once upon a time, there was a garden
Story time!
clever Master Cat and proud Father Elk, knowing Queen Owl and gentle Lady Dove, wise Elder Crow, and brave Mistress Eagle.
Master Cat in the burning desert, Father Elk in the deep woods, Queen Owl in the open sky, and Elder Crow in the grey deeps. Only the sisters – Dove and Eagle - stayed.
So these are probably representations of the Gods of Man. Elk is probably Taal, Owl Verena, Dove Shallya, and Eagle Myrmidia. The others I'm less sure on. Crow could well be Morr but crows are also more often associated with Nurgle while Morr is usually linked to Ravens. Of course, Tzeentch is also called the Raven God by some so it could just be a case of overlap. Master Cat is interesting. On the one hand I want to say Ranald, but the mention of fleeing to the desert makes me wonder if it is one of the Nehekharan Pantheon.

One possibility we might want to try is to get in contact with followers of each of the mentioned Gods. At the very least the way Junius spoke made it sound like there is a wider conspiracy. Come to think of it, his wife didn't get caught did she? From the way she spoke it sounded like she was in on the plan.
But when he arrived, all he saw was a slumbering monster with four heads
Against its fury, its misery, its pride, its lies, he cut and cut and cut right through, until he stuck its blade right through its heart.
Definitely a metaphor for Chaos, though with this world it could also be a very literal monster.
At the very top of this awful Tower, drinking the chaos like the Maelstrom, was the man, but hardly him. His skin had grown scaly, his teeth sharp. Eyes grew where none ought to be, and where they should be were but great spikes of black horn. In his hands – which were all that remained human, was a single rose – red and beautiful. And to that the rats rushed – but went one came close, he merely picked it up, and swallowed it whole. A new beast the man had become, and the garden worse than ruined – desecrated to its very soul.
And the birth of the Horned Rat. I wonder if the rats are a vision of the Skaven or a representation of the people of the Twin Cities. Swallowing that which comes close whole would be a good metaphor for a certain soul consuming Princeps.
"The story's not over yet, my dear" your governess replies. "There's still your part to play."
Well, some good news, the ending of the story is not yet written.
I am greatly concerned you chose XVII as the Legion this guy came from. Am I jumping at shadows that you picked the number of the Word Bearers? Possibly. But I have a strong feeling you're going to litter this quest with small hints.
FOLLOWER GAINED: Ambrose, Prefect-Spy

Ambrose's Bonus: Ambrose can be assigned one extra action a turn (beyond Xenophon's five), either ordinary or risky. He is sworn to perform what you ask of him, though you can be sure a report of everything he does is going directly back to the Tower.
I imagine it's not controversial to say we should keep this guy doing things of no major consequence. Stuff that we need to get done, but that does not allow him the chance to cause major sabotage.

[] Plan: Groundwork
-[] Explore a district (Shambles)
-[] Visit another temple (Myrmidia)
-[] Hire a servant.
-[] Seek mental help. (Lazarette)
-[] Buy a weapon. (Ambrose)
-[] Go to the address in the Shambles. (Pelops)

So this is the plan I've put together. For Ordinary actions I've got Explore a district (Shambles) in order to do some preliminary work to try and pick up any details that could help with the venture. Visit another temple (Myrmidia) is picked because I'm going to push a theory that we want to try and speak to individuals from each of the mentioned metapohrs in the dream, and Myrmidia is also associated with light and spears, the Spear of Righteousness being a major part of her mythology. Hire a servant is on there because we need as much help as we can get. Ideally we get someone with a similar bonus to Ambrose who we can trust. I've got Seek mental help. (Lazarette) in order to try and get the rest of the Morrites into a better situation. I figure the Shallyan option will be less damaging, the Gods of Law aren't gentle they're going through a bit of a problem at the moment. Finally, Buy a weapon. (Ambrose) is on there so that we can be better prepared for going into the Shambles.

Go to the address in the Shambles. (Pelops) is the venture action to continue the investigation into what Junius was up to. Ideally, we want to get on this right away to avoid any clues going to ground or being found out by the Princeps first.

FREE FOOD – Do you need to eat? Do you want to make your city better? Do you want to show the Senate what for?! Come to an Open Banquet! As much food as you can stuff yourself (on behalf of our Moulder supporters) for the low, low cost of nothing at all! With entertainment too – here some of the best and brightest candidates for Senate speak! Come to any of the following addresses…
Maybe I'm paranoid, but I can't prevent myself from being extremely suspicious; On one hand, Panem and Circenses was areal thing. On the other, it's Moulder we're talking about and spreading a transformative substance trough public feeding would be an effective strategy. We should investigate them.

MYSTERY MURDER - The Lord Donus Melodus died under mysterious circumstances this past evening. Officials have yet to release a cause of death, yet witnesses report a "mouse beastman" having burst out of the door of Melodus' manor around the purported time of his death. Reports of self-defence organizations – so-called "Ratcatchers" – have formed up in the Casbah, patrolling the neighborhood for any interlopers…
It could be a red herring, because that's way too obvious.

DESERT FATHER – Have your hearts filled with elegance and fortitude. Come to the Sanctuary in Little Nehekara and supplicate yourself to the Great God Khsar: the biting wind, the terrible heat, the parching thirst. See his power manifest in the creation of a Ushabti…
That sounds ominous as hell, but I can't see any obvious link to the Skavens.

A PRINCELY VISIT – Hail! Snarratum Stonehammer, Prince of Karak Ungor comes to the Twin Cities, marking the first visit from the so-called "nobility" of our cousins to visit us in thirty years. His purpose is yet unknown…
The local dwarfs may try to assassinate him, or he's coming to investigate what they're doing. We should look at him.

Skavor the Great! The True Ancestor sat frozen eternal on his seat, turned to a stone so pale it seemed almost translucent.
appearing out of the pit itself on a spike of raised earth that merges at his hip is Fafnir Fogfather, Grand Master of the Sons of Skavor.
Remember how he went down to the deep earth and learned to make his flesh one with the world!"
At that, the whole cavern rumbles as Sonsm pulling off gloves and boots, dip their petrified extremities into the water and yank with all their occult power to connect themselves to the stone.
and a hundred elderly dwarves are helped off, each petrified up to their neck. Fafnir, in perfect silence, rises, bows deeply before the petrified Skavor, and then takes the artifact from his unmoving hands.
You see the dwarves encircled are rapidly petrifying, the stone rising up, past their chins and mouths and eyes.
At using Magic on their bodies? That's as silly as Malekith becoming Phoenix King but that didn't do shit in the end.
They are absolutely doing so, and the maybe-Gazulite didn't seem to like it. It may be linked to the visit of that Dawi prince.

I think the vision implies that the Princeps eventually becomes the Horned Rat himself. The fact he has a soul eating sword kind of speaks to him having the potential for doing something evil like that. He probably arranged something with Drachenfels to get the first screaming bell out of envy of the gods.

Another point in that argument is this:
On his head sits his horned crown of office
It's not unusual for crowns to have protrusions, but specifically calling it out as a horned crown is very suspicious considering our meta-knowledge.

So yeah he probably got the bell from Drachenfels who probably made it out of a corrupted old one artifact. The Princeps used it to become the Horned Rat and in exchange Drachenfels gets rat demons and Skaven to serve him whenever he asks.

There's a new dream tonight. You wonder if it's an apology. There are no bones in your throat or smoke up your nose – no, nothing but a pleasant warmth. You feel half-asleep, dreaming within dreaming; in some far off, soft, comfortable place – like half a child again. And then a kind voice speaks, and you know it's some vision of the past, for that's your governess, Aoife, long and bitterly dead. But it's nothing from your memory the story she spins.
well that nice of morr to give us a pleaseant dream after all that very not nice stuff that went down last turn for our poor dude morr a chill god

"Once upon a time, there was a garden. It was a pretty thing – with roses as rubies and lilies white as snow. Its oaks were tall as towers, and all times of the year you could find the most ripe and wonderful fruit – cherries and apples and berries of all kinds. The source of this glory was a miraculous font – clear and sweet, from which all these wonderful things came. And in this lovely place lived all the animals – clever Master Cat and proud Father Elk, knowing Queen Owl and gentle Lady Dove, wise Elder Crow, and brave Mistress Eagle. And in happiness and bliss did they spend their days.
pre chaos invaded the world it looks like and we got randland tall, Verena, shallya and crow...crow is very inttresnting here cause it expliicty not the same as raven which is the holy bird of morr and it associated with ill omen death ect or one of the chaos god it not one of the chaos gods pretty clear just from wise alone but it called wise eldar crow...can't really find any gods associated with crows either beyond one that don't fit like chaos very weird here...then myradima for the eagle

Does xenophen know of any gods associated with crows?
But all good things must end, as Elder Crow was fond of saying. A Great Beast, jealous and greedy, had heard of the garden and coveted it for himself. Burning and eating all he came upon; he carved a path of ruin. The animals, panicked, scattered to the eight corners of the world. Master Cat in the burning desert, Father Elk in the deep woods, Queen Owl in the open sky, and Elder Crow in the grey deeps. Only the sisters – Dove and Eagle - stayed. And while the Lady went to try to speak reason to the Beast, Eagle knew what must be done. She dove down, deep, deep into the depths and saw the source of all things – and tore off her feathers to stopper it.
chaos invading the world randland fleeing to the desert tall to the forest ect ect this all lines up pretty well with otl but then we have elder crow. Here it says they flee to the grey deeps? I have absouelty no idea what that could be but grey deeps suggest that it fled down into the ground...the eldar crow may be a oc god here that in timelone got killed by the horned rat. Also poor shallya trying to stop chaos madnesss.

this is another very intresnting part the the eagle went down deep into the depths and saw the source of all things? Now this gets me thinking and then covered it up! Whatever is coming out of this source of all things was fueling the garden making it all beaitful and such now that it closed that why it gets beaitufl. I think there 2 things this could be reffering to the hole that the skavor are messing around with it does go super deep into the ground into...something powerful? But more likely is the giant font of magic myramdia suppsodely made for the city of tylos which would line up later on in the narration now my first thought that this was a waystone iof some kind but...I dunno this seems all too much for a waystone and into the depths of all thing. Think this is something else associated down there deep magic or something but this adds some very intruiging stuff here

So, when the Great Beast came, having struck down Dove (yet she lived – but that is another tale) – the garden was all a-wilted. The roses and lilies had lost their petals, the oaks their leaves. He raged and at having been outwitted; but schemed to take his pleasure back. If he squatted in the garden, no one else would have its beauty, and for he, a hateful thing, denying others happiness was nearly better than having it himself. Little did he know, Mistress Eagle lived – hiding in the dried spring.
man chaos is a huge asshole and myradmia lived hurrah!

Many years passed, and Eagle almost gave up hope. But one day, a man came to the garden. He had heard tales from it from the other animals, who sung so sweetly of their lost home. But when he arrived, all he saw was a slumbering monster with four heads in a nest of dead plants and corrupted earth. This, he could not stand. He had sworn to his lost love he'd get her a flower from this wondrous garden. So, he drew his sword, and let out a battle-cry. A hundred days and nights did he do battle with the Great Beast. Against its fury, its misery, its pride, its lies, he cut and cut and cut right through, until he stuck its blade right through its heart.
slumbering monster with four heads this is chaos this is clear as it gets but now we get more to stuff we know we know the founder of tylos had to fight some great evil( a dragon iirc) to defeat it and be able to found the city itself. so this lines up with that also don't think the sword is a mistake being mentioned here or them being stabbed in the heart.
After, in the shattered garden, he searched desperately for a rose – and who to meet him but Eagle. Behind her gushed the spring anew, for she, hearing evil's death throes, hurried to restore it, to wash all taint from the world. And it did –again the fruit ripened, and the flowers bloomed. The water too, in its miracles, healed Eagle's wings. She left the garden for the man to guard – for what a hero he had been. Then she left to fly the breadth of the world.
rose...now this is very intresnting it not a black rose so we know it not related to morr. Also spring the giant font of magic that lets loose magic that suppsodley a gift from myradia is also called spring so def direct connection there the son of skavor might also be connected to this too but it def spring connection. rose though I am still stuck on for what it represents.

Many years passed again, until Mistress Eagle returned home, but when she did, she saw no garden any longer. No longer grew pretty roses or strong oaks – just thorns and brambles, in compacted clumps, each dripping with terrible poisons. Scrambling through this horrid thicket were rats - hundreds and thousands. They scrabbled and bit each other to climb the mass, rushing over the impaled and seizing corpses of their brethren. A new beast the man had become, and the garden worse than ruined – desecrated to its very soul.
oh wow I wonder what this could represent surely it does not represent the fall of tylos at all lol. Anyway yah we know this represent the story roughflky up till now too so this unless some very extradionry events happens is pretty much gurannted to happen here. This represent what happening in tylos everyone deserpate to climb the ladder of the city trying to leave slums behind or climb up even higher. Also the cut throat poltics of this to. Yah the princeps, the bad guy it a princeps soul eater sword man who was suppsodely good now doing bad stuff, and a tower that help brings about the end. The garden become desolate pretty grim situation here
"I am the Knight of the Roost! Thank you, milord, but your assistance is unnecessary! With I and Morr, we are protected from all comers!" He's kneeling now and is simultaneously - incredibly - saluting. Ambrose is smirking at you, very clearly trying to hold in a laugh. His smile is very pleasant, which only annoys you further. You try to salvage the situation.
god I pelops is the fucking best love his full on sincierty in this situation, best protector of the roost there is also don't think Ambrose and everyone else is gonna get along well lol

Pelops turns on a dime and looks at you with unabashed betrayal. You kneel and stage-whisper to him "Only as a favour to the Princeps. Gods forbid what colonials know about the Twin Cities".

You see Ambrose redden pleasingly, and Pelops, recovering, offers you a little grin.

"Onward, then?" you say, and your week begins.
lol like how we were able to get in a little verbal jab in here and clearly Ambrose wants to be seen as a regular twin ciites

FOLLOWER GAINED: Ambrose, Prefect-Spy

Ambrose's Bonus: Ambrose can be assigned one extra action a turn (beyond Xenophon's five), either ordinary or risky. He is sworn to perform what you ask of him, though you can be sure a report of everything he does is going directly back to the Tower.
oh neat despite being a spy he seem pretty useful just gotta assign him to action we are fine with the prefect finding out

ELVEN PERFIDY – In another blatant provocation from Ulthuan, the Prince of Tor Alessi has signed a treaty of alliance with the eight chiefs of Borlii, the very barbarians suspected of giving support to the infamous bandit "Mother Epona" …
ahh and the fall of the twin citie sstart with it out territories starting to be chipped away from the twin cities

GREAT DISPUTATION ANNOUCED - To fill the vacancy in the position of Grand Consecrator, it is hereby announced that the two applicants Angelus Spania and Floridus Aulus Lar Scipio Ennius will proceed with a debate before a jury of their peers. The motion is: "This House Should be Atheist" …
hmmmmmm elimating the gods from any form of power or control in the magic instuions meant to keep chaos and other manvolent threats out....bet the princeps loving this

Come to any of the following addresses…
okay here me out yes it moulder but free food is free food and we aren't swell with cash
MYSTERY MURDER - The Lord Donus Melodus died under mysterious circumstances this past evening. a mouse beastmen jollly I wonder what that could be? no it could not be a beastmen that be immposible/s but yah that a skaven or a proto one if i have ever seen one though these ratcatchers not sure if they are good or bad will but want to get into contact with them either way

DESERT FATHER – Have your hearts filled with elegance and fortitude. Come to the Sanctuary in Little Nehekara and supplicate yourself to the Great God Khsar: the biting wind, the terrible heat, the parching thirst. See his power manifest in the creation of a Ushabti…
oh wow Ushabti are massive guradnian constructs that guard impormant sites within nehakrakn, it not super relevant to us go but it neat
A PRINCELY VISIT – Hail! Snarratum Stonehammer, Prince of Karak Ungor comes to the Twin Cities, marking the first visit from the so-called "nobility" of our cousins to visit us in thirty years. His purpose is yet unknown…
huh....now this is intresnting indeed now there a couple thing this could be involded with. The sons of skavor and there ritual/whatever the priest was invesigsatign honestly think this is unlikely they send a priest of gazul and such. more likely I think this is about twin cities infrigning on there human client terriotry and conquering them for themselves.

How many turns do we have before we have to go back to the princeps with a report

Morr is associated with ravens and crows. Further, the entrance to Morr's Realm is called the "Grey Vaults".
Is he associated with Crows? What I can find is crows are specifically called out as not being associated with him, mainly do not confuse these with ravens. Admittedly that is in Imperial times which took up the practice of nailing the birds to wooden posts, but crows seem to be primarily associated with Nurgle.

What does Drachenfels has to do with anything?

There is great amount of circumstantial evidence suggesting he was the sorcerer in Grey robes who finished the tower in Tylos for the Princeps and installed the cursed Bell that created the Skaven. His character sheet in older Warhammer material shows he spoke Ancient Tilean and Skaven and he is both immortal and powerful enough to have not only been there but created the bell from some leftover Old One tech/magic artifact.

The crow seems to be a mixed symbol, from what I can find? It's true that the raven is the primary symbol of Morr, but WHRP (2nd) edition says that Ranald took the form of a crow, and that bit about crows being the eyes of the Dark Gods is specifically noted as being a rumor in WHRP (4th). Personally, I had assumed that Morr took both because Nordland's runefang is called "Crow Feeder" and I doubt it would have been given a name that exclusively symbolized Nurgle. It's debatable, certainly, but for the purposes of this Quest, Morr claims both bird.

EDIT: Also, I would presume a significant degree of the Imperial association of the crow with Nurgle comes with the Norscan association of such, which would have significantly less cultural cachet all the way down in Tilea.
the insightful marking
Please note me giving insightful is just me being appreciative of your analysis, not a mark of correctness.

@Graf Tzarogy will the venture action in the shambles disappear if we don't take it this turn? ]

Anyway here what I am thinking for this turn our best bet for what the fuck happened at the theater is in my opinion was with mellisa the wife of junius who was talking with him and a bunch of reds about what the theater and how something was about to go down with them. Also she was the one who sent us the letter in the first place that invited us to this.
Melissa blanches, but then recovers, forcing a laugh.

"Oh, dear – what he means is that it's a tragedy tonight – twice over, you know, because I have to miss it."

"Why's that?" you ask.

She gives a smile – all teeth.

"A death in the family.".

There is a beat of silence. She grabs her husband's hand, gives it a squeeze, and lets go.

"Well, have a lovely night!" Melissa of Pleroma says, and then walks out into the city dark.
also she knew shit was going down too and knew her husband was gonna die as well. She the best bet to start with to figure out wtf happened.

Then going to the address in the shambles cause the gazul priest invited us to go there and god of death bros stick together, also don't think he would not have invited us if it was not important for us to go. Also it a priest of gazul they are cool as hell and I am interested in the plotline with sons of skavor. Bring pelos with us cause the shambles are dangoures place to be and it will trigger a interlude so will help us reroll failed stuff in here. Though I may change that if it does not disappear this turn.

Then as the head of the roost and of all the priest of morr in this city we got to help our insane brothers out not only cause it the right godly and moral thing to do here. But also because if we are to ever restore the roost to it former glory and make it not a semi dangoures place to leave we need to get help. Also the Shallyans are cool and this be a good way to get in contact with them especially with the portent.

Then we have our little spy dude buy a weapon for us. I am sure he can handle that.

Then we enroll as a ratcatcher not only because we need some money at the moment and it aint much but it honest work. But also because the text directly states "it's the stubbornest portent you have." Also with our witchsight we prob be pretty good at it

[] Plan: Morr Help Us
-[] Investigate somebody. (Melissa)
-[] Go to the address in the Shambles.(P)
-[] Seek mental help. (Lazarette [Shallyan])
-[] Buy a weapon.(A)
-[] Hire a servant.
-[] Enroll yourself as a ratcatcher.

In that case

[] Plan: Morr Help Us
-[] Investigate somebody. (Melissa) (P)
-[] Provide funerary services.
-[] Seek mental help. (Lazarette [Shallyan])
-[] Buy a weapon.(A)
-[] Hire a servant.
-[] Enroll yourself as a ratcatcher.

In that case I'll do the venture next turn that way I can out Pelops on the Investigation action since there so much riding on it. Traded it out for funeral services so we can get more money and so we can fulfill the duties that a being priest of Morr entail.

"We should investigate Melissa asap so leave off the dwarf venture until we can have Pelops for it" is not a bad argument, but i personally still consider meeting with the Myrmidians non-negotiable so here's my proposal:

[] Plan: There were TWO signs
-[] Provide funerary services
-[] Visit another temple (Myrmidia)
-[] Enroll in the ratcatchers
-[] Seek mental help. (Lazarette)
-[] Buy a weapon. (Ambrose)
-[] Investigate somebody. (Melissa) (Pelops)

I am fine with this alteration to the plan winning as well

edit: though I am curious why are the Myrmidians non-negotiable? Is it cause of the dream?

edit: edit: though my one worry with my plan is we don't get a servant which unlock another follower for us to help with actions which is always very helpful and the longer we put it off the less benfeit we get out of it
The vibes continue to be absolutely immaculate.

Funerary services, prayer and, yes, taking care of our mind-blasted insane colleagues.
as well as this plan since it goes hard on our priestly duties which is good synergy.
