Warhammer Fantasy: Thirteen Tolls - An Apocalypse Quest

A thought for those who are looking for traces of the conspiracy and the founders of the Skaven clans.

We probably shouldn't look for the Pestilence clan. This clan formed its own characteristics much later. The original Great Clan in their place is the Verms clan. They were engaged in the cultivation of giant battle insects, as well as the production of oil for lighting lamps. So we should probably look for someone involved in these types of activities.

And the Council of Thirteen also includes Gray Seers, so we need to look for the city priesthood.

And the Council of Thirteen also includes Gray Seers, so we need to look for the city priesthood.
Not so sure: taking the presumption that the horned rat is what becomes of tyleus, the priesthood of such would be the most direct representation of such on mallus: his direct descendant(probably) and holder of a chunk of the original soul of tyleus- princeps suttar

A thought just occurred to me... Is Ambrose the soldier option from character creation? Former legionary, wants vengeance… the mysterious letter mentioned in the intro could of been from the LoS. Wouldn't be the first time a discarded character option has been reused as an NPC in a quest. (If so it could be cool idea for a nega-quest)
Also we really need to make a Dramatic Personal sheet. It's only been two rounds and its had to keep characters straight in my head.

Turn Three - Hanged Man

The sun rises, as on any other day.

You wake to crow-song and the milkmen, like you have every week before.

You do your morning routine, as you've always done.

Wash your face in a cold basin, put on your black tunic, make your bed. Make Pelops' bed. Wander to the kitchen, cut some bread, spread some cheese, pour some wine. Partake. Refill your plate, and ready a couple more. Wander down to the cells. See your brothers.

Sanguine is asleep – a nocturnal beast - but round now Florian and Pilate tend to be awake. Greet them. Florian sits silent, staring, mouth agape, like a little boy. Pilate is more gregarious – "Good morrow, father!" he says. He isn't referring to your title. You lay down the rations. Florian scuttles up, grabs a few handfuls, stuffs them in his mouth, and returns to his corner. "Good morrow, son" you say to Pilate. To deny the delusion complicates things. He grabs the plates and divvies up portions. "Brie's my favorite, father – thank you!" says Pilate. You know, because he's told you every morning since you've arrived.

You go.

You walk out into the garden. Something different today. Pelops isn't out sweeping the path, as he always does. You wander around, under the willows and past the roses. Through the headstones, and the tombs and the columbaria to a dry streambed of mirrored stones, bounded in marigolds.

This is the grave of the unborn. You did not get a name in Tylos-Kavzar until you survived your first year. Be lost, and at least the old practice was – no single grave, because it would be cruel to cast one so young out alone. So, they were given to the care of friends in the hope that together even innocents might find Morr's embrace.

Pelops is standing in the bed; his face reflected in the stones. He turns to you and asks.

"Am I going to die?"

You have not done pastoral work in a long while. "That is Morr's gift. All things come to a close."

"I mean- s-soon."

You think of your dire warnings, and your brothers underground. What do you know of Pelops, really? No family that you know of, and no friends. His acquaintances are insane, or you, and you're on the threshold with your proclamations and panic. Duty, death, and silence has been his lot, and your arrival has only added burdens. But you cannot bring yourself to give false comfort. That has never been Morr's way. Medicine is always bitter.

"I cannot say."

"I don't m-mean to be ungrateful" the boy stutters "I have faith in my Lord and you and have no fear of the v-Vaults or any enemy against the will of yo- Xe- my Raven. I just wish…"

"You had more time?"

Pelops looks guiltily at you. "I d-don't want to doubt the gods' plan, but-"

"It seems unfair. Don't look shocked! The Gods will what they will, and we must obey, but we have at least have the right to doubt."

"I just want-" and he swings his arms to encompass the garden, the cities, everything "to see a little more. Go to great ball, eat till I'm sick, make a friend make them an enemy and then make them a friend again."

You think back to when you were sixteen. You remember a cold manor, sneering faces and the whip. Duty a noose, silence as a friend, death for decadence. You remember what you did to get out. A prayer, a miracle, a murder. God and your governess. How much you'd paid to be born again.

To not give false assurance is one precept of Morr. Its opposite is likewise a holy duty; to not break promises made.

You look at Pelops, in the dry bank among the marigolds and dead children and make an oath.

"I will see you live, my loyal knight. Come hell or high water, the Tower and the rats and the Princeps himself – I swear, may my soul forever wander, that you, Pelops, will get out of this alive. You'll have your dance and meal."

"I have faith, my lor- my Rav-" He looks up and gives you a weak smile. "Xenophon."

And you both turn together, to face another day before the end.

TURN 2 - the Nones of Araggio

A turn is one week, or eight days. You can pick up to five [5] actions. Ordinary Acts are a guaranteed success, risky ones are fifty-fifty for a positive or negative result, and Ventures open interludes. Actions tagged with an (S) mean League of Salvation requests and are taken with a discount; two only take up one action slot, though taking one will still cost the whole slot. Actions with write-ins can be taken several times, albeit with different write-ins.

FOLLOWERS

Followers are characters willing to assist you on your quest. They offer you particular advantages on each turn, from performing certain acts for you, to making others less risky. Assign a follower by putting their initial in brackets after the action in question. For example:

[x] Explore a district (Thunderdome) [A]

You have two followers, Pelops [P] and Ambrose [A].

Pelops' Bonus: You can assign Pelops to one Risky act or Venture each turn. So chosen, he will allow you to reroll once if you fail on your initial attempt at that Act (or on up to three rolls in a Venture) as he and Last Rest protect you from harm. However, do be aware that he may be affected by the negative effects of a failed roll.

Ambrose's Bonus: Ambrose can be assigned one extra action a turn (beyond Xenophon's five), either ordinary or risky. He is an agent of the Tower, so choose accordingly.

ORDINARY ACTS

[-] Explore a district (write-in: Thunderdome, Summerland, the Pall, Elftown, Little Khemri, the Brass Quarter, Circus, Temple, Cloisters, Casbah, the Shambles).

It's been a while. Better to get the lay of the land.

[-] Visit another temple (Write-in: Ranald, Verena, Ahalt, Shallya, Tyleus, Manann, Ishernos, Medhe, Cailledh, Margileo, Skavor, Nekeharan Gods, Elven Gods)

Morr is not a jealous god. Will his divine family be any help?

[-] Research the soul.

Someone is abusing that most sacred part of all living beings. See what others know about this particular blasphemy.

[-] Research dreams and portents.

These cities are lousy with libraries. See if you can identify any of the symbology.

[-] Hire a servant.

Even the poorest Tylosian citizen can hire someone from the teeming masses of the Shambles just outside the walls. (opens sub-vote on what type of servant you'd like to hire, who, according to their skills, may perform certain actions for you)

[-] Look for a holy artefact.

If this is bad as the dreams seem to be, you'd feel better with some trinket. You can afford to be superstitious, you're a priest of the God of Portents.

[-] Hire security.

Morr's embrace is rather something you'd prefer to put off for a little while. Ensure the Roost is well-defended.

[-] Set up a ratline.

You're not leaving, but other might want to. Ready something to get people out of the way.

[-] Amass supplies.

You don't know which way the wind is blowing. But a good amount of rations in the Roost would make you feel a lot better.

[-] Enroll as a political partisan (write-in: Reds or Whites)

You hate this. But you might need connections, and how better than door-to-door?

[-] Help Floridus with his Trial (S).

The Trial of the Body involves healing the dammed. Offer a brother and see if Floridus can make a miracle.

[-] Go to the gladiatorial games.

You deserve to relax a little.

[-] Pray.

O last friend, our lover true / might we know our way to you?

[-] Restore the Roost. [LOCKED BEHIND: recruit clergy, may be taken if recruit clergy is also done this turn]

This place is a shame to Morr and your own dignity. It's going to take some serious work to get it back up to snuff.

RISKY ACTS

[-] Investigate the Tower.

It has been haunting you so. The whole thing blazes with magic, inside and out. You doubt you'll be able to secure entry, but just a closer look might reveal much.

[-] Recruit clergy.

There must be more then two of you. Right? Right???

[-] Offer prophecies.

If Thunderdome is indisposed, you are potentially the only source of portents in all the Twin Cities. Capitalize on that.

[-] Investigate somebody. (Write-in: who?)

The Princeps will be expecting a report (at the start of next turn). And gods, you wish you had a straight answer from someone.

[-] Explore the undercity.

There's rats and warpstone and hidden divinity. See if you can follow up on any of that.

[-] Go and bet on the gladiatorial games.

Maybe you had a relevant portent?

[-] Go to debate night.

See if there's any hope for the election.

[-] Visit the picket lines.

Figure out where the front lines of the class war are being drawn.

[-] Harbour fugitives. (S)

Cassius has a list of names. He asked if you had space. He gave no further explanation.

[-] Preach in the streets.

Gauche, yes. Loud, yes. But any press might be good press?

VENTURES

[-] Give a speech to the Senate (write-in: subject).

You have the right, if by technicality.

[-] Locate MALOK (S).

Kakram's sent a letter with the seal of Karak Ungor. Help him fulfil a grudge.

[-] Sabotage printing presses.

Turns out, Siege is printed in the Cloisters, quite near to the Roost. A rather violent neighborhood, all things considered…

[-] Go to the Casino.

Experience the freedom of the House of Tyleus and remember Aoife as she'd prefer to be.

[-] See your parents.

You're never going to be ready. But they know everybody.

WRITE-IN

[-] ???

(If there's anything missing that you'd think be prudent for Xenophon, give me a shout and I'll assign it a category.)

AN: And back around again. 24 hr moratorium please. As always, please let me know if there are any errors or questions. I have started work on a persons of interest post, but mind this will be strictly factual information that Xenophon is 100% sure of, so if anyone wants to post a list of persons with speculation on their roles in the overall mystery, please don't feel that would will overlap.

I really need to sit down and make that persons of interest post I keep talking about.

Not a huge amount to say about the story section. Action wise I'd say we want at least two society actions and hire a servant to unlock another turn bonus. Outside that I'll need to think.

I'm in favor of hire a servant, visit a temple (tyleus), TOWER, MALOK, help Floridus with the trial, go to Casino, and maybe send ambrose to investigate someone so we have a story for the Princeps next turn.

combine recruiting clergy and harboring fugitives to get a bunch of Initiates and shroudknights named Titius Numerius Negidius

Interesting. Let's see...
I want a servant, to have more action economy.
We need to pretend to investigate someone, so we have some bullshit to give to the Princeps of Evil. Ambrose can be our lackey for this. Our real angle will lie elsewhere.
I would help Floridus with his trial. (League action). The other League action is locating MALOK, to get more information on the Dwarves' angle.
Then I want to Investigate the Tower (with Pelops, because this is very dangerous and important. Although maybe the Venture of locating MALOK is more dangerous, so we may want our bodyguard for that instead?).
Knowing more about Dark Souls synergizes well with the action to investigate the Tower. If we know more about how the human-rat mass is kept trapped, and what the Tower is doing, we can think about how to redirect it or sabotage it.
I want to have another synergy in play: going to the Temple of Anhalt + exploring the Undercity. We know of another party, ignored by all, that may be our ally. I would know more of him and his sorry X-men mutants. What does he know? Can he help us contain the RUSHING TORRENT OF THE APOCALYPSE?

Right, I'm finally sitting down and writing out a list of people we know of and why an investigation could be useful. This is by no means exhaustive but I think getting something down to help list out when picking targets to research.

That took longer than expected.

Something that did come up though, MALOK is a name in Warhammer Fantasy, though I'm not sure if it has any connection with the name used in the quest. Malok is an ancient Khazalid word meaning "Malice" and it got used to rename a dragon who was enslaved by a mage who forced them to fight in the War of Vengeance.

I imagine the dragon is probably unrelated in this case though.

Anyway, onto the vote.

[] Plan: Priest Business
-[] Visit another temple: Tyleus
-[] Hire a servant.
-[] Help Floridus with his Trial (S).
-[] Recruit clergy. [P]
-[] Investigate somebody. (Mistress Marvos) [A]
-[] Go to the Casino.
-[] Locate MALOK (S).

So, for visiting a temple, I'm going to push for the Temple to Tyleus. It'll possibly be useful to see what's going on there regarding the spring and if there are any oddities we can see. Hire a servant has been a part of my plans each time and I'm continuing to push for it. Helping Floridus with the trial is for part of helping the League and getting a nominal ally into a position of power.

For Recruiting Clergy, I want to try and continue working on restoring the Roost. We've only got one lock left to do before we can take that so I figure it's worth trying to do it this turn so next turn we can get it up and running.

Regarding the investigation, I think we should look into Mistress Marvos and her affairs. She wasn't doing a good job according to Nivet and we could swing it as related to the murder attempt as the spear was deflected towards her. It's something I think we could talk to the Princeps about with implicating our allies.

For the Ventures, Locate MALOK is picked so we can do some more work with Kakram and help get an in with the Dawi. Getting closer to him will also make it easier to get him to explain about the pits under the city. I also want to go to the Casino, the House of Tyleus has some connection to Xenophon's past I want to know and it may also get us more information from Cassius and Marcus since they're also connected to it in some way.

Thank you for the list of characters.

Your proposal has some good points... But I believe that either "Restore the Roost" (since we are already recruiting clergy) or doing a guaranteed "Research the Soul" can be more valuable than going to the Casino.
I am more inclined to send Ambrosius to investigate The Prince of Karak Ungor, so he can help us in locating MALOK... but if we are supposed to talk to the Prince about it... maybe playing it safe and sending him to investigate the personal circumstances of Mistress Marvos is a better option.
IMO Pelop is surely more valuable in a Venture, such as "Locate MALOK". If we can't find good recruits we can just try again.

The thing about Recruiting Clergy is it's a risky action, and while I've stuck Pelops onto it so we get a retry at it, it's still not a guaranteed success. If it fails and Restore the Roost remains locked, we've just lost two actions. So I figured spacing them out was a better option.

Research the Soul is probably a decent idea, but ultimately I want to find out about Xenophon's past and getting more information on the House of Tyleus and their anti-slavery efforts. Who knows, they might have an underground railroad which could be useful for smuggling people out of the cities.

Regarding the investigation, the description of the action is, "The Princeps will be expecting a report (at the start of next turn). And gods, you wish you had a straight answer from someone." While we might be able to get by with just what we have, I'd rather err on the side of caution and have a bit more information to use as a smokescreen that makes it look like we're doing something useful.

Ok, I mostly agree with a couple of point of disagreement, so I'll prepare this alternative version:

[] Plan: Priestly investigations
-[] Visit another temple: Tyleus
-[] Hire a servant.
-[] Help Floridus with his Trial (S).
-[] Recruit clergy.
-[] Investigate somebody. (Mistress Marvos) [A]
-[] Research the Soul
-[] Locate MALOK (S). [P]
