Warhammer Fantasy: Norsca United! (CK2)

Didn't go to Nippon proper either. The ambassadors pretty much stayed away from the far east area of the planet. Probably do to range issues.
The Norscans, a terrifying people that tower over all other humans. They have pillaged every coast from far-off Cathay to ancient Lustria in their endless quest for wealth, glory, and bloodshed.

Not range. Convenience.

Reaching the place isn't a problem for us.

It might become a followup option though. Something the QM used to make sure we weren't locked in for an unreasonable amount of time...

Jarlsmeet 2440 - Part 4

After spending the day discussing how the Grendels and Ogres will be represented, you spend the evening with Bahbahk.

You discuss Tabitha, and how she's doing well in her new position of Skaven Hunter General, although she's hasn't yet had the chance to do much of note. He speaks a little of his other children, and that gets you talking about your daughters. Soon, the two of you are laughing and commiserating over the joys and agonies of fatherhood.

Bahbahk relaxes back in his chair and takes a lung pull from his mug of ale. Smiling, he says, "It is good to spend time with you like this; good to see you as another man instead of my king. Titles have a strange way of replacing a person."

"Yes. I've noticed that too." You pause. Bahbahk seems at ease; perhaps it is time to bring up why you wished to speak with him? "You know, Bahbahk, I've noticed that you've seemed a little melancholy this Jarlsmeet. Is anything the matter?"

Bahbahk stares down into his drink. "It's those Kurgans we recuited."

"They've been causing trouble?"

"No- Well, no real trouble. They're a little rough and rowdy, and they've followed Chaos for a long time, but we can deal with all that. Soon enough, they'll give up their old ways for kinder gods, soft cloths, good steel, and all the other products of civilization." He puts just a little too much emphasis on that last word, and his lips curl into a small sad smile.

"Is there something wrong with that?"

Bahbahk sighs. "I don't even know." He shakes his head. "Kislev is expanding into Troll Country, and you've built those great fortresses in the north. And I'm glad we're putting pressure on the Trolls and the Ratmen. And when Chaos strikes, I'll be damn glad we've got those fortresses. But... we're taming the steppes." He laughs. "And that sounds like a good thing! But my people have always struggled against the wilderness. It's what we do. It's what we are." He shakes his head begin. "But that's changing. Slowly but surely. Fewer folk follow the old ways. More and more are settling down. We're becoming... something else."

"I'm sorry, Bahbahk. I hadn't realized."

He shrugs. "It's not your fault. And I shouldn't be complaining. You've given my people safety." He smiles sadly. "When we first formed the bond between our tribes, that was what I wanted most. I just didn't realize what it would cost me." He shrugs again. "But it's fine. It's all fine. In a few generations, there will be no one left who knows what we've lost."

Bahbahk sighs again, and, for the first time, he seems truly old and exhausted. This display catches you completely off-guard. You struggle to find something - anything - to say, but you can't find the words.

He slowly rises from his seat. "The night is late, and I am weary. I must rest." Without waiting for permission, he walks from the room. Pausing at the doorway, he turns back to you, and his tired eyes meet yours. "Tabitha is doing well?"

"Well- yes." The random question catches you by surprise.

"Would she make a good Jarl?"

"Yes."

Bahbahk nods. "I think so too. She likes your ways, and she was never too fond of the wild steppes. Perhaps that's for the best. I will see that she rules after me." With that, Bahbahk leaves. Something tells you that she'll be getting the throne soon.

Given the situation, you suppose this is the best you could hope for. At least the next Jarl of Aesland will be friendly toward Heimgard.

AN: Not so great rolls this time. I used the rerolls on this.

The next day, you discuss how the regions of Heimgard have recovered since the war and how they might be strengthened.

This conversation goes remarkably well. It seems all the lands are prospering. In the south, Bjornland and Skaeland are opening up trade, and Sarland is getting a flood of immigrants. In the north, towns are springing up around the fortresses you built to protect the coast.

Despite the ongoing problems with the Idolaters, there are no dire problems with any region.

The day is spent discussing the boring but important matters of inter-regional trade and improving infrastructure. You should net a nice profit on these improvements. Also, the discussion yielded interesting ideas on how to further improve the land.

On the last day of the Jarlsmeet, you spend the evening with Ingemar, so you may speak with him before he leads his pilgrimage south to the Flame of Ulric.

You spend the meal alternating between strained conversation and tense silence.

At last, you finally break down and just say, "You don't like me very much do you, Inegmar?"

He grimaces. "Is it that obvious?"

"Yes."

"Never could keep my feelings off my face. Makes me a good priest. But yeah, I don't like you."

"Why?"

He laughs, his voice cold and brutal. "You know, there's an old legend that says Tzeentch once made a cursed mirror that torments onlookers with visions of all that could have been. To me, you are that mirror."

"I don't follow."

"Think about it. We are both priests. Oh, fine, you call yourself a shaman, but really you're a priest. We are both holy men who lead our people and serve our gods. The only real difference between us it that you got a little bit luckier. You got to inherit a land with great fortresses and friendly Dwarfs and Baersonlingers. I had to deal with Graelings and Skaelings: true Graelings and Skaelings. Not those beaten dogs you've brought to heel. You had allies and resources; I had enemies on all sides. And they did all they could to destroy my people. And damn it I nearly beat them all anyways. If things had gone just a little differently, I would be High King."

"And you would try to change that? You would have my throne?"

"No, idiot. I don't like you, but I'm not going to pick a fight with you. We've got Chaos at our throats!"

"I'm glad you understand the Heimgard must stay together, that-"

"I know the speech, Thorfin. I don't need to hear it again. In fact, I'm not sure why I need to hear anything more from you. Why are we talking right now? Can you just say what you need to say and ask what you need to ask so I can get on with my life?"

"Fine." You snap. "I need to know if you'll swear obedience to the the Ar-Ulric."

Ingemar laughs again. "I have no desire to gain a second master. Especially not that pampered weakling in his fine clothes and fancy cathedral playing politics. Maybe there are some proper Ulricans somewhere in the Empire, but most of them are mad. They forsake even basic tactics and honor soft-handed priest who've never felt a proper winter's chill. No, I won't swear allegiance to their Ar Ulric. Now, you got any other questions?"

"No."

"Great. Maybe next time you should just ask instead of wasting both our time." Ingemar storms out of the room.

Feck.

Ah well, can't win em all, and he's at least somewhat loyal, to Heimgard if not us.

Yeah he's dedicated to Heimgard and opposing Chaos, so that's good enough. We don't need everyone to love us, just be capable of working with us.

I feel bad for Bahbahk in that we have forced civilization onto his people.

It might be a good thing overall but I can understand him being upset that things he has always known is changing around him.

@ancusohm is it possible to name a region of Heimgard to never be settled so that people like Bahbahk can grow in the wild and free? Maybe Centraland with only the new Capital and Halfling farms being the only form of civilization?

Upset that Inegmar doesn't like us mostly out of what could have been and hope we can make him see past his personal beliefs.

That's not the issue. His people are settling down and as the next generation grows up, are used to a life in Aesland where they don't have to constantly travel and be on guard. There aren't going to be many people who still follow the old ways soon. Not really much we can do about that, and not much we can do about Ingemar. He'll work with us and that's all we really need.

Still feel bad that our actions have made one of our closest allies depressed and hope there is something we can do to help him.

@ancusohm can you please clarify the above? How fares the ogre/grendel integration?
Some Ogres are adopting the Grendel religion, but they're still pretty different groups culturally.

Is there any reason we didn't try to establish any embassies in Ind?
It's far away. Tahvo was focusing on relatively nearby regions. There will be another action to check out the far east.

You could do that, hypothetically. But like Nervos Belli said

@ancusohm will Jarlsmeets become a regular thing now ever couple years or so?

Also can we somehow talk to Bahbahk to make him feel better? Maybe give him a task or something?

He shrugs. "It's not your fault. And I shouldn't be complaining. You've given my people safety." He smiles sadly. "When we first formed the bond between our tribes, that was what I wanted most. Time marches on, as it does for all things.

We COULD possibly start up something like a Mounted Ranger unit that recruits people young though. Sort of a nomadic knightly order(only bigger), recruiting heavily from the best riders across Heimgard for the seed group, then picking up boys and girls with potential. Helps maintain a horse archer complement.

@ancusohm, is that possible?

Anything else would not be what he wants either. He's just mourning that his time has passed, but it's a GOOD thing that things have moved on. Things used to be hell, now they're good.
Ingemar laughs again. "I have no desire to gain a second master. Especially not that pampered weakling in his fine clothes and fancy cathedral playing politics. He'd do the right thing, but he'd be trouble regardless. We can deal with that though.

Really like this idea and Bahbahk can be in charge while also working closely with the Dwarf Rangers since they love of wilderness.

Well, not much to do about Inegmar except ask for his son as a ward and then wait for him to kick the bucket.
Eh, while we could technically do that it would be a fairly blatant case of taking a hostage. I highly doubt he'll ever move against us. And we don't want to risk aggravating our other jarls out of paranoia

What? Like some kind of vassal Cossack host?

So what? It is common practice. And it is not like we would not treat the boy well.

My issue is that if we leave things as is Inegmar's heir may inherit his father's resentment but not his common sense which would lead to him being Chaos bait.

Common practice is if he offers to do so. I'm pretty sure of his answer if we asked.

What? Like some kind of vassal Cossack host?
Something like that. We need skilled horsemen to patrol such a large area, and they'd need to be trained from childhood.
