Unprecedented Times [A Pokemon Ranger Quest]

...also this is literally what the currently winning plan says about increasing Special Attack to Advanced.

Sure. But Kylie has been shown the effects repeatedly of not having her skills up, and so far (so far..) neither BB nor Urchin has been at a disadvantage at their current level. It feels more like Kylie needs to be brought up than BB or Urchin, although I agree that we should start reversing the trend soon.

It feels more like Kylie needs to be brought up than BB or Urchin, although I agree that we should start reversing the trend soon.

Again, we kinda don't know this either way? We're operating on very slim evidence because we've prioritized Kylie literally every time. She's getting more Free XP in the current winning plan than BOTH of her partners combined. Even with their Targeted XP Advantage (which is because they're often the ones doing most of the work, lol), Kylie more or less matches both of them combined.

Imagine how much smoother the Old Storm situation might have gone if B.B. and Urchin were stronger? Things in fact got incredibly dicey, and B.B., despite how we've intentionally neglected to raise any of his stats to Advanced, saved our bacon by evolving.

We should in fact be aiming towards having 1-2 of their stats being Advanced (though we're obviously not getting that this round even with my more generous plan that's actually fair), because this is a team effort.

I will say that it's legitimately kinda shocking and I think a little silly just how much this plan makes it clear that Kylie is the only one that matters?

Like, she gets 2/3rds of the free XP, which is just fucking LOCO.
Yeah, we can literally just raise Rangercraft next time we complete a mission? There's not that much of a rush, and Kylie has THREE Advanced skills while, just so you note, none of her Pokemon have even a single Advanced Stat.
Alrighty, I'm awake and done my morning ablutions, and now I'm ready to explain my reasonings and debate.

In my mind, Kylie is the glass multitool of the team. I absolutely adore B.B. and Urchin, truly, but I also accept that their responses to other Pokemon ultimately boil down to "Attack" or "Run." Their instincts are too strong and their intelligence too insufficient for anything much more complicated than that. Kylie is the member of the team who can comprehend and utilize options outside of these two, such as negotiation, appeasement, and even potentially aligning goals together. A major part of this is tied up in Rangercraft with the styler usage, which is the primary method by which Kylie can directly assist her partners in conflict besides directing them. Thus, in my mind, advancing Rangercraft to the next stage is essential, which will also make Kylie better at wilderness navigation and survival as a plus.

Next, Kylie is the brains of the team, able to research and plan ahead, so advancing Pokezoology is another must in my opinion. The fact it is so cheap thanks to the contributions from previous plans just makes it all the better.

Finally, Athletics. As I said at the start, Kylie is much more fragile than her Pokemon, able to withstand less damage than them and having no method of immediate field healing. So improving her stamina and musculature means her ability to dodge and run will be better, as well as to increase the tools that she can carry and use out in the field. Plus, we'll pick up an Advanced trait in this category, which will prove beneficial as well.

Another reason I focused on Kylie is that Kylie only this one area to advance her skills and abilities, while the Pokemon technically get two with this one improving their statistics and then later we can expand their movepools.
Also, if you tally up the targeted EXP, Kylie gets slightly less than 1/3 of that, so I feel no regret stacking 2/3 of the free EXP onto her.

However, your comments have made me look over my plan, along with everything else that we have access to, and I have changed my mind slightly. B.B.'s new Titanic Bearing Trait, combined with him already knowing Defence Curl, means that buffing up Physical Defence isn't as necessary at the moment. So I have spun up a new variant of my plan that dumps all of B.B.'s targeted EXP into Special Attack.

[X] Plan: The Kylie Trifecta, Healthy as a Starfish, and (hopefully) Advance the Sonic Cannon
-[X] Free EXP
--[X] Kylie
---[X] Athletics + 430 EXP
---[X] Rangercraft + 400 EXP
--[X] Urchin
---[X] Health + 250 EXP
--[X] B.B.
---[X] Special Attack + 120 EXP
-[X] Targeted EXP (B.B.)
--[X] Special Attack + 500 EXP
-[X] Targeted EXP (Urchin)
--[X] Health + 350 EXP
-[X] Targeted EXP (Kylie)
--[X] Pokezoology + 80 EXP
--[X] Athletics + 170 EXP

This plan, combined with mine and aimlesspolymath's omake EXP, brings B.B.'s Special Attack to 650/800, which with 380 omake EXP still available, means that getting Special Attack to Advanced is distinctly possible and absolutely guarantees that next plan will push it up there.

[X] Kamkong omake EXP
-[X] B.B.
--[X] Special Attack + 70 EXP

Still going to include my original plan here, but having another options feels good.

[X] Plan: The Kylie Trifecta, Healthy as a Starfish, and Bolster the Sonic Cannon
-[X] Free EXP
--[X] Kylie
---[X] Athletics + 430 EXP
---[X] Rangercraft + 400 EXP
--[X] Urchin
---[X] Health + 250 EXP
--[X] B.B.
---[X] Special Attack + 120 EXP
-[X] Targeted EXP (B.B.)
--[X] Physical Defence + 400 EXP
--[X] Special Attack + 100 EXP
-[X] Targeted EXP (Urchin)
--[X] Health + 350 EXP
-[X] Targeted EXP (Kylie)
--[X] Pokezoology + 80 EXP
--[X] Athletics + 170 EXP

Some comments on the chapter for @OxfordOctopus

Shou rolls his eyes, looking back at you. "We have time before he's done," Shou says wryly. "Anyway, if you go north from Pewter City, you'll hit mountains pretty quickly, and if you follow one of the many mountain paths up, and keep going, you'll eventually arrive at a plateau just below the tree line. Up there is a dense maple forest, and deep inside of it is a vast, ornate temple, surrounded by statues of Vulpix and Ninetails. Living in that temple is a Ninetails older than human civilization."

Your job was decided for you several hours before you arrived at the house and the Altaria on it, and now up there, you find it is almost as bad as you expected.

You have been, bluntly, relegated to Altaria punching bag and box holding duties.
This transition and the next one felt really awkward to me. Unlike the other ones, where the transitions retain some chronological consistency, this one cuts away from Carson searching for treats, has Kylie fending off the Altaria, and then cuts back in time to Carson searching for treats,
"Are you done?"

"Altaria."

"The Ninetails who lives in that temple is named Dasyus," Shou continues as the two of you watch Carson's increasingly panicked search for treats.
The whole segment with Kylie and the Altaria feels shoved into a slot where it doesn't quite fit. I'd definitely have preferred it if you just continued on with the rest of Shou's story about Dasyus and the Choosing, and then after that moved onto Kylie being the Altaria's stress toy, and then finished the day.

The proper name from the games and anime is "Ninetales". It's a consistent error though, so it's possible you had your reasons for choosing this spelling?

...I didn't. Augh, one second.

That's... a fair point. I think I got trapped too much in the rhythm of the back-and-forth. Give me a moment, I'll edit that alongside fixing my spelling error.

Edit: Things have been fixed and the chapter restructured. LMK if you find any weirdness.

We must make Kylie even better at Rangering. And being a living stress ball.

I was hoping for military aristocracy dating back to the Indigo Dominion and got exactly what I wanted. A lot of Shou's behavior is really put into perspective. Having not just one parent, but an entire extended family treating you like a soldier, a subordinate bound to follow orders from your superiors, from the time you can walk sounds like a great way to hamper your social skills, even disregarding Shou's natural temperament and experiences. The Kamden patriarch sounds like probably one of the worst people in Konrin on a personal and national scale, but the detail about Shou's mother sticks out to me more than anything about his father. Being confused at Shou disobeying his father and family and assuming he was tricked somehow, that's so devastating to think about. Her world must be so small and narrow. I can't help but wonder if she was a former subordinate of Tatsuya Kamden in some capacity, and how many other people are brought into the family through similar channels.

I'm also just stuck on the idea of a Konrin equivalent to Fort Bragg and JSOC. I'm not sure if it would better or worse than the one in real life. Also there are definitely officers drooling over the dragon units because they're "natural soldiers" or the "warrior mindset" dragon types supposedly have, even when they should know better.

Good chapter, excited for next week.

Both of these plans seem good to me

Finally, Shou's past! So glad to hear it, so glad to hold that trust. And the ninetales is super cool.

I feel a bit like doing a victory dance over Shou proving he deserves being treated kindly and is a good ranger. I knew he was someone worth getting to know from the start!

I love the town altaria, so sweet

There's a lot of stuff in the update. Shou's past explains so much of his behaviour, and honestly, the guy's doing pretty dang well all things considered. It explains why Rune and Kaleidoscope are trained to roughly a third badge level as well. Kaleidoscope brings up Daysus though and oh boy is that a can of worms. A pokemon living in a specific area for at least fifteen times their maximum projected lifespan definitely feels like they qualify as 'if not a god, absurdly close'. It also puts Kaleidoscope's modifier Embers into a new perspective. She's already the child of an exceptionally powerful Ninetales, with a borderline unhealthy amount of aura on top of that, and she's still a Vulpix. If Kaleidoscope wants to evolve, and Shou gets a Fire Stone, then Kaleidoscope probably going to have an absurd amount of Fire at her disposal. Also funny that Rune was originally supposed to be a lap pet, but enjoys battling and rolling around in whatever the heck she can get into.

If there are any pokemon akin to Daysus in Hoenn, they probably aren't very happy with Groundon and Kyogre's simultaneous awakening, and just want the humans to either stay out of the way while they fix it themselves or help them fix the problem if they aren't going to stay out of the way. Part of me wonders if any pokemon of that relative age are more likely to actually live underwater given the sheer amount of ocean that the Hoenn territories include. Either that, or they hang out in the volcanic areas of Hoenn, and probably deeper inside the volanco than humans typically venture. Deep ocean depths or deep volcanic depths in general seem like places that a pokemon of considerable power might choose to make their home if they desire solitude.

[X] Plan: The Buff Pokenerd, The Bruising BB, and The Cutest Urchin

Ugh, I really do want to see rangercraft go up given how close a lot of those styler scenes have seemed, but the argument that we shouldn't let our pokemon lag too far behind kylie resonated with me and I have 0 faith future votes will rectify that instead of just kicking the can down the road again.

I added an approval vote for [] Plan: The Buff Pokenerd, The Bruising BB, and The Cutest Urchin in my plan post.
My main concern @The Laurent is that you seem to have split 370 free xp between B.B./Urchin's Speed and Kylie's Rangercraft, and I can't figure out why? If you put it all on one of them they'd only be 30 omake xp away from levelling.

That is a point, I was mostly trying to get them to the point of being able to be all completed next time?

Basically what Byzantine said. If you're wanting to try and stack the deck in favour of those Masteries being levelled next time it could work, but 30 omake xp is a small enough goal that consolidating on one of the Speed stats just feels like it works better? Plus if Rangercraft doesn't win now no way does it not get upped next time, even if it's at 0/400.

Argh, I'm late and haven't said anything at all in a good while now. Shame on me.

Man, this mission really was a thrillride from beginning to end, but everything's been wrepped up as well as they could have been it feels. We've gotten a lot closer to and learned about Shou despite the rocky start (new addition to the Friend list?), our grouchy pink potato evolved, and Kylie's gotten not only a lot of experience for us to spend but a lot of experience character-wise I feel as well. This entire mission, while it certainly took longer than expected, was such a blast from beginning to end. Can't wait for what we'll have to deal with next.
Though also looking forward to some well-deserved R&R.

There are probably a few primeval ground, rock, and steel types that have been cheerfully swimming through the upper mantle for millennia. A bunch of them already seem likely to be very long lived, and I wouldn't be shocked to hear about a Steelix or Onix doing a Jormungandr impression.
