Unprecedented Times [A Pokemon Ranger Quest]

I'd be willing to add Dig (and a basic Ground-type move to pave the way) to Urchin's wishlist.
Hopefully it's a basic move, otherwise Urchin'd need to learn two other Ground moves first. At least having Mud Slap would also help against exposed electrical wires, if she can just cover them up.
Also, sudden Mareanie/Toxapex from below sounds like a nice surprise for any would be poachers trying to get some Primalcite.
The last thing they see is her head spike poking out of the ground moving towards them as the Jaws theme plays.

Honestly? Mud Sport seemed to catch my eye more than the other options.

The ability to reduce her Electric-type weakness by covering herself in mud is pretty nice and it would seem to help in the same vein as Water Sport when it comes to putting out fires and, as an extra benefit, electrical hazards like you just mentioned.

Not entirely positive but I think smothering a fire under heaps of wet mud would work just as well, if not better than regular water?

Admittedly a not-insignificant part of liking Mud Sport for Urchin is also that, yes, our silly little hooligan of a Mareanie playing in the mud is a very cute image.

With dig it would be pretty funny for Urchin as a Toxapex to learn drill run. She could kind of fold her tendrils together to form an actual drill rather than aura doing most of the work.

Depends on the circumstances. It'd probably be great for fighting wildfires, but throwing a few hundred pounds of mud up onto the roof of a burning building sounds like a good way to end up with a collapsed building.

[X] Head to the lower cave cluster

I love Granbull's design and I didn't want to just say 'they're just teeth' whether by making them white teeth or just saying they're pink like the rest of the body for reasons.

Fun fact: beavers have red teeth due to incorporating iron into them for extra durability. Pink is a shade of light red, so that could be an (alternate universe) option?
Edit: Whoops, they're orange.

That being said, I really like the keratin explanation!

Durant with Truant perhaps? Lazy bastards whom eventually get ejected from the colony/used as Heatmor offerings.

I thought it might be a reference to this: "the average worker ant takes approximately 250 naps each day, with each one lasting just over a minute."

Don't really have anything to say that hasn't already been said about the chapter, pokemon interactions were great, our baby has grown so much socially (or maybe he's been forced to after being around Urchin for a little while now 😅), and well, everything was great. Though that cave crawling section actually almost made me feel claustrophobic for a bit, felt really tense.

The Crown-of-Thorns Cuddle Up | [Insectlover243]
Despite only being partners for a short time, Kylie would consider herself intimately aware of at least a few of Urchin's unique personality points.

The easiest of course would be just how energetic the Mareanie was for being an ambush and trap-laying predator. The Mareanie didn't seem to have an 'off' switch until she was simply too tired to continue, constantly running around, racing off to interact with anyone who so much as looked her way and, for such a new addition to the team, was remarkably keen on testing each and every boundary.

Kylie didn't mind, even if that same energy was sometimes a double-edged sword when it came to properly training the Brutal Star Pokemon. It was a marked difference from her experience with B.B., the Whismur usually falling back on a bit of a grumpy, standoffish air unless food was involved, and the experience of wrangling an excited Pokemon's attention and behavior would surely be helpful to have in the future.

Another big part of Urchin's personality, one that Kylie had to assume was a result of a lifestyle that revolved around waiting for prey to wander by or fall into a trap, was her seemingly never-ending curiosity about the world around her. It felt like each new room, person or object was something the Mareanie simply couldn't resist inspecting, whether that was by leaning in to give it a testing smell, a curious nibble or a teasing smack with her tendril.

Kylie didn't begrudge her this either, so long as Urchin knew what was appropriate behavior for whatever had caught her attention. Smelling a plant or smacking a toy slide was fine but there was a world of difference between using her unique methods of deduction on objects and on actual people or other Pokemon.

Such as is the case Kylie finds herself in now.

"Mareanie?" Urchin gurgles as she approached Glow, the Mareanie's eyes locked on the Venonat's round, fluffy body with a look that was usually reserved for stuffed animals and decorated pillows.

Kylie didn't have to be a genius to realize Urchin's intentions, especially with the way the Mareanie's tendrils were twitching with barely-restrained energy.

Urchin had only been a part of Kylie's team for a short while now and the moments where she and Glow had properly interacted on a 1-to-1 basis were even fewer so Kylie wasn't exactly surprised when Glow started shying away from the Mareanie's attention and towards the empty space underneath Gretchen's bed, the Venonat's body seemingly growing just a bit larger as her fur started puffing outwards.

It wasn't exactly hard to understand the reason behind the Insect Pokemon's reluctance to socialize. Even if Glow's partial Poison-typing would lend her some resistance to the worst of Urchin's poison if she was accidentally pricked, there was still the fact of the matter that nobody reacted well when a living crown of spikes started moseying on over for a hug.

Gretchen, for her part, didn't seem overly-worried about the event taking place right near her feet. Sure, the trainer's eyes were locked on the scene in question and one of her hands was sitting on Glow's Pokeball but the Kalosian was relatively relaxed, hand gently cupping the ball and body aware but loose. Her eyes jumped up momentarily to meet Kylie's, no-doubt taking in her own relaxed but attentive posture, before slipping back down to observe Urchin and Glow.

Kylie wasn't sure if Gretchen could tell from Urchin's body language that the Mareanie didn't mean any actual harm or was reading the same thing through her own but Kylie appreciated the trust nonetheless.

"Urchin." Kylie announced, making sure to sound as firm and uncompromising as possible. While nothing had happened yet aside from Glow making her displeasure at the Mareanie's approach known, there was a preference towards making sure that was all that happened and sounding unsure of herself in capturing Urchin's attention wouldn't have helped that effort at all.

Thankfully the Mareanie seemed to listen, head twisting around and placing her attention on Kylie for the moment. The Mareanie's head tilted to the side in a blatant show of confusion, trainer and Pokemon locking gazes for a moment before Kylie ushered her to come back to their side of the room.

"Marrr..." Urchin's gurgle trilled off in disappointment as she began to waddle back, the Mareanie chancing a look back and seemingly growing more disappointed when she realized that Glow had disappeared into the darkness under Gretchen's bed, not even the light of the Venonat's compound eyes being able to be seen.

As Urchin sat down near her feet at the edge of her bed, Kylie couldn't help but feel for the Brutal Star Pokemon. Even if she had loved the outdoors as a child, exploring the costal caves with wild enthusiasm, it wasn't like she hadn't ever seen something like a cute stuffed toy for sale in a shop, only to have to run to keep up with her parents and leave it behind.

...Then again...

Struck by inspiration, Kylie reached over to pull up her bag from the floor and began to rifle through, the sound apparently catching Urchin's attention if the sound of a confused, boiling tea-kettle coming from near her feet meant anything.

It only took a moment or two for Kylie to find what she was looking for, her arms pulling out the Smoopy the Smeargle doll that she had bought from the open-air flea market in Mossdeep.

The doll wasn't exactly the largest around, being about the size of Kylie's hand, but one certainly couldn't say it lacked charm, what with its dangling brush-tail tipped with green felt and adorably-floppy limbs.

Turning back towards Urchin with toy in hand, Kylie was happy to see that her actions had captured the Mareanie's attention and the toy in her hand even more-so. Kylie wasn't sure if she had ever seen the Brutal Star Pokemon's eyes so dilated, the Pokemon's mouth slightly open as she stared spell-bound at the tiny, fluffy figure currently dangling from Kylie's hand.

Leaning down to bring herself closer to her Pokemon, Kylie shot her newest teammate a smile as she gently offered the doll to the awestruck Mareanie, more than ready to pull back if an overly-energetic pounce for the doll was made.

Thankfully the Mareanie seemed far too enamored with the tiny doll to risk damaging it, two of her tendrils coming up to wrap around Smoopy, the spikes pointedly tucked against the underside of said tendrils.

Firmly grasping the doll, Urchin brought it closer to her face for inspection, the Mareanie's mouth opening further and sucking in air as she got a taste of the doll's scent.

It apparently passed inspection as she dragged it in closer towards her stalk, although whether the Mareanie was going to tackle the next option on her inspection checklist by trying to take a nibble out of it would remain a mystery as, in the process of bringing it even closer, the Mareanie ended up brushing the doll up against her cheeks and chin.

The Mareanie paused for a moment before treating the still-watching Kylie and Gretchen to what sounded like the mixture of a cat's purr and a bubbling brook, the Mareanie's tendrils squeezing tightly around the Smoopy doll and her eyes curling up in happiness as she began to nuzzle her head against the toy's soft fabric.

Happy that her Pokemon's mood had improved, Kylie snuck a glance over towards Gretchen, meeting the other girl's eyes and smiling as the Kalosian shot her a cheerful thumbs-up before going back to browsing her Holo Caster.

Kylie could swear she could even spy a pair of red eyes peering out from beneath the bed, the Venonat seemingly relaxed, or at least not huddling as far underneath the bed as she could, now that Urchin had found something else to occupy her attention with.

Content with any potential disasters being momentarily diverted and with everyone in the room comfortable once more, Kylie turned her attention back towards her P★DA to continue reading through the forum post Yeong-Chul had been kind enough to send her, the quiet of the room only interrupted by the sound of fabric rubbing against skin and the gurgling of one particularly happy Mareanie.

I cannot overstate how much I love your omakes and this one in particular. You probably all realize by now that I don't generally reply directly to omakes, and this is because my posts have a habit of being the final reply on something, and subsequently this means I have to post back to back for things like vote completion (such as I might have to do after this) or new chapters, which is something I dislike doing. That dislike mostly stems from forum culture back when I was much younger (where 'bumping' - a term used to refer to sending a forum post up to the front page by posting 'bump' or something else that doesn't really add to the original post, often by the original poster - was heavily frowned upon) so double (or sometimes even triple) posting can feel kinda uncomfortable to me.

That said, I do feel at times my raw appreciation for every omake I get might be missed. I need you all to know, like I have said here, that I read your work, I revel in your work, and I love all of the work you guys give to me. Whether they're in-universe scientific papers or scenes with Kylie and company or something else entirely. Every single of one of them holds a great and warm place in my heart. In the future, keep this in mind if your omake ends up getting a reaction and a threadmark (as well as posted to the omake and exp tracker) but not a reply, because internally? I am so terribly happy.

Anyway, yeah, Urchin now has a new favourite stuffed animal! 10/10.

I'll be closing the vote in another two hours or so. I'll see you again when it's time!

So cuuuuute. God who would have thought at the start of the quest that our most adorable mon would be the toxic starfish?

I greatly appreciate the kind words and I'm happy to hear you enjoyed them!

Personally, any omake I write getting a Like or Reaction from the author is more than enough for me. The fact that they've been marked as Canon omakes just floors me since, at least here, it's just been me abiding by the Rule of Cute for Urchin four times in a row!

(The impetus behind this one was noticing the Smoopy doll in our Inventory and wondering which of our Pokemon might be fond of it. Seeing as my brain is 100% Urchin, 100% of the time and B.B. already has his chew-toy...

Pros, Urchin now has yet another way to be adorable and a way to relax after those long days of being a Ranger-affiliated Pokemon.

Cons, Kylie has yet one more item she's gonna need to clean of Whismur or Mareanie drool on a regular basis.)

Interesting thing I noticed while rereading:

We know the Altaria population declined precipitously during the war, and as a result the effect the Altaria's Cloud Nine ability would have on the local landscape would be missing—this area would be constantly flooding from monsoon rains, experiencing them in full for the first time in possibly thousand of years."

I'm not sure how I missed what he said entirely, but Shou made basically the same point I did earlier, about how the Altaria leaving the area results in monsoon flooding of the mountain for the first time in ages.

Except he was referring to when the Dominion captured all the Altaria and Swablu they could snap up, for use in the war. Almost a century ago - though I don't remember exactly how long, only that the only one alive to have directly experienced it is Old Storm.

So this mountain area is going through the same situation it did back then, with no Altaria around to prevent the rain. The only physical evidence we have of anything that happened back then is the rusted food tin... which was wedged between some rocks as part of a cave-in. The Dominion left no obvious presence beyond that.

It's not conclusive proof, but it strikes me as a strong warning sign that this area becomes dramatically more geologically unstable when the rainfall increases to monsoon levels. Either the owner of that tin (and anyone else up here) pulled out in a hurry and left their food behind, or they were on the other side of the cave-in and never left at all.

It doesn't change what I voted for at all (the lower caves), but I thought it was interesting. If anything, I imagine it makes both caving options more threatening.

[2.14] Vote Results
Okedokes everyone, since it's time for dinner, I'll be calling it here!

Coming in with an overwhelming majority, [X] Head to the lower cave cluster wins with 30 votes. The other option, [X] Head to the upper cave cluster, took only 4, making this a near-10-to-1 unanimous decision.

Thank you all for reading, and I'll see you all again on the 21st or 22nd of August. Until then!

Move Mishaps | [Insectlover243]
Part of me feels like I should apologize, throwing out omakes left and right when the thread chatter seems to naturally be dying down.

I didn't even really plan on this one to be honest. I just thought of funny situations that might occur due to certain moves being known by one of our Pokemon and I found myself typing some out despite myself.

Anywho, here's some attempts at comedy.

Aromatic Mist
-The user releases a potent, floral aroma into their surroundings, empowering the Special Defense of those who inhale it.

Teaching a Pokemon a new move could sometimes be quite the hurdle, what with having to find out how to get them to understand what you wanted them to do in the first place, sometimes having to coach your words and actions to facilitate this, and then repeating those directions until the switch was flipped, the correct aura was used and the move blossomed into life for the first time.

This process usually took longer than a Pokemon's patience would hold and sometimes there was nothing that could be done but clap your hands, reward your partner for all the hard work they had done and make do with whatever progress had been made for that day. It wasn't completely unheard of for some Trainers (or even Rangers) to take one look at this process and shake their heads, dedicating themselves and their Pokemon to mastering the moves they learned naturally (although it was rare to see such people reaching the upper echelons of their chosen career).

While you personally hadn't delved too deeply into teaching either of your Pokemon new moves, that wasn't to say that the subject had remained completely untouched, as B.B.'s access to moves like Bubble and Disarming Voice could attest to.

It was the latter that was currently coming to the forefront of your mind, as while the lack of friendly-fire inherent to the move was definitely a nice option to have (such as against an angry troop of Vigoroth for example), now that you were officially a trio, there were other Fairy-type options that could simultaneously swing a battle in your favor and potentially stop one of your Pokemon from being hurt.

Thus, you were currently standing a few feet away from B.B. as the Whismur repeatedly took deep breaths before exhaling in an attempt to infuse his breath with Fairy-type aura and blow it towards a waiting Urchin.

You couldn't help but feel like he was right on the threshold, the Whismur's body being shrouded by more and more pink aura with each consecutive breath.

"Mareanie..." Your attention was dragged away from B.B. taking in another deep breath by the sound of a rather impatient gurgle, your eyes quickly taking in the way Urchin was fidgeting and the displeased look on her face. It was clear to see that, while she had been fine with obeying your request at the start of all this, the Mareanie's patience was being sorely tested and you didn't think treats were going to keep her there for much longer.

Your thoughts were proven right a moment later when, after glancing back at B.B. one last time, the Mareanie audibly let out a small, watery huff and began to look around. It didn't take her long to find something in the surrounding park that demanded an inspection, the Mareanie shuffling away from the two of you as she let curiosity take the wheel.

This act apparently wasn't to go unaddressed however as B.B. took one look at the retreating Mareanie and, with brow furrowed in displeasure, let out his held breath in a long, purring hiss, pink mist flowing out of his mouth and quickly catching up to and surrounding the Brutal Star Pokemon. You caught the most relaxing scent of roses as it wafted by you, the very brief inhale causing your stance to relax despite yourself.

"Mareanie?" Urchin turned back towards the two of you as she found herself surrounded by the floral-scented mist, the Mareanie tilting her head as she observed the hanging mist around her before she opened her mouth and took in a deep breath, the Mareanie's usual method of taking in the scent of something.

The Mareanie shuddered for a moment, her entire body going still before she....flopped to the ground?

You blinked, half-tempted to rub your eyes as you witnessed Urchin go limp and fall forward into the grass, the Mareanie's tendrils splaying around her haphazardly.

You were just about to rush forward to make sure she was okay when the Mareanie let out a very prolonged hiss of pleasure, Urchin's eyes half-lidded (were her eyes always that pink?) as she wiggled there in her spot on the grass, the Mareanie letting out a sound like a boiling kettle that you had come to understand was her version of giggling as she rubbed her face up against the grass.

You knew that Aromatic Mist had a bit of a relaxing component due to its floral aroma but it seemed that, due to a Mareanie's unique version of scent-tracking where they gulped in a large amount of air in through their mouths, the move was almost super-effective in turning your usually-energetic Mareanie into a relaxed, giggling lump.

You chanced a glance back towards B.B. who seemed rather too happy with himself.

...You got the distinct impression you were going to have to train him not to use that move whenever Urchin's energy got too much for him.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Follow Me
-The user enshrouds themselves in Normal-type energy, becoming impossible to ignore or avoid and causing all attacks aimed at nearby allies to be redirected towards them

It had been a thought you'd had countless times after welcoming Urchin to the team; how could you best take advantage of the adorable crown-of-thorn's defensive prowess and make that a major issue of any Pokemon that tried to get in the way of your work?

The main hurdle was simply that, while she stood miles high in your heart, the fact of the matter was that Urchin was slow. She wasn't going to be outspeeding anything short of a Slakoth (although you had an idea or two there as well...) so getting herself between a Pokemon committed to attacking you or B.B. after repositioning herself for the first time was going to be an unscalable hurdle without either a lot of training or the right move used at the right moment.

Thankfully, after hours of research, there appeared to be one such move that would allow Urchin to do her job without her low speed becoming an issue and you quickly set both you and your Mareanie partner to the task of learning it.

It had taken much of the day to actually get the technique nailed down but, when you had next found yourself in danger that deemed the walking ball of spikes and poison you called your partner too troublesome to deal with and had fired off a quick ranged attack aimed right at your center-mass?

Well, it wasn't hard to grin with delight when you saw Urchin's eyes tracking the incoming projectile and she began to show that tell-tale glow of Normal-type energy that quickly caused her to become the center of attention.

There had been one slight issue however.

"MA-REA-NIE!" Your beloved Urchin had shouted out like a drill instructor ordering their troops to about-face, the attack aimed your way jittering unnaturally in the air as it curved and started heading for Urchin instead.

The Mareanie had seem so pleased to have the move work in live combat but you wouldn't soon forget the expression on her face when she had belatedly realized that the attack meant for you was now homing in on her face and was approaching quite rapidly.

Urchin had been fine of course, the attack not being anywhere near enough to seriously injure her or put her out of the fight before you and B.B. had wrapped things up but you did have to deal with the comedic look of betrayal that flashed across the Mareanie's face when you went to go and check on her.

Well, that and also feeding her a small mountain's worth of treats before she'd consider the two of you even and would cuddle back up to you.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ally Switch
-
The user teleports using a strange power, swapping places with one of its allies

...Okay, you'd fully take the blame for this one.

It had seemed so obvious in your head! What better way for B.B. to protect himself from being swarmed than by outright switching places with Urchin? The latter didn't need to be fast if she was effectively teleporting and the former's speed and ability to rapidly reposition himself meant, on paper at least, that the enemy could never be sure if they'd finally corner your bouncy little bunny or if it was a trap just waiting to be sprung!

The thought of yet another way to protect both of your Pokemon with one move had galvanized you and, after having spent an entire day teaching it to B.B., you had walked towards your next mission with a smile on your face and some pep in your step.

You hadn't even flinched when, while you were right in the middle of trying to clear out a collapsed powerline, a swarm of Joltik had descended on you and your team.

The tiny Bug-type Pokemon, though numerous, had made the bad decision of targeting B.B. after all and the command to swap places with Urchin had flown from your lips with a complete lack of hesitation.

Now, here you were, you and B.B. completely silent as you both stared at a rather bemused Urchin, the Mareanie's confusion undoubtedly having something to do with the swarm of Joltik currently unconscious and twitching at her nonexistent feet.

The Joltik, not expecting the swap, had been mid-pounce and, through sheer bad luck (and maybe you not having fully thought this idea through), had ended up slamming themselves into the bracing form of your poisonous spike-covered Mareanie. The shock of the swap, the piercing spines and the Mareanie's horrendous poison had quickly led to each and every one of them fainting.

...Did this count as a win? Staring down at the still-twitching Bug-types, you couldn't really say for sure.

It was going to be one hell of an experience though, trying to recount this tale to your superiors.

Never apologize for these amazing works, especially when chatter is quieting down. It just allows the possibility of new discussions based around the new snippet. I really liked the "what-if" nature of this one, with two very unlikely moves and a move that, while useful, is now filling me with guilty feelings for having considered it.

I really liked the "what-if" nature of this one, with two very unlikely moves and a move that, while useful, is now filling me with guilty feelings for having considered it.

You figured out my clever little scheme!

By writing omake after omake centered on how certain moves might lead to harmless, if comedic shenanigans, I can aim the thread's interest towards moves I'd love to see added to our Pokemon's movepool!

...Nah but for real, Follow Me would basically be my sole interest out of those three, even if it's kind of funny in a mean sort of way to picture Urchin putting a target on her head.

I suppose nothing is stopping her from redirecting an attack and then using Protect to absorb the hit?

...Or, god forbid, using Follow Me when the enemy is aiming a physical move at either us or B.B. and then using Baneful Bunker.

(As for the other bit, I suppose I just don't want to annoy anyone with the Omake spam (the main reason I put them behind spoilers) or, even worse, come off as if I'm writing to farm EXP rather than to show my appreciation and love for the story and its characters.)

Nah but for real, Follow Me would basically be my sole interest out of those three...

I was considering it earlier, and, even though it's not in her usual move-pool, maybe we would be able to spin her habit of shouting after receiving commands into training it? I'm not sure how we would "build" her towards it, so to speak, but would be very interested in doing so.

Would be very helpful for Pokemon to slam themselves into her spiny, poisonous arms.
