What happened, son? - an A/S side story
What happened, son?
As What happened, daughter? and What happened, kids? keep gaining more readers and I made some promises, I decided to go on with the sequel. This one covers parts on chapter 8., all of chapter 9., and may (tough to say yet) stray a bit ahead into chapter 10.

And yes, this announcement is after the first chapter since I was publishing the first one in a hurry.

Word of warning: The story is canon in regard to Two Souls and may contain some minor spoilers to characters' actions and motivations; so if you want to preserve Kyoko's PoV as the dominant one, I suggest refraining from reading this. If not – enjoy the shift in perspective and the teenage drama (more than in the previous story - be warned).

What happened, son? – chapter 2.

WHS?, chapter 2. – "Tell me!"

"Misato, are you trying to sneak out?" Asuka called from the door, eliciting a quiet giggle from Shinji but not interrupting his bento-packing even for a moment.

"Um… no?" Major Misato Katsuragi emerged from her room in her full uniform, her red beret in hand. "I believe the suitcase is in the open", she eyed both the suitcase and the bag in the apartment entry area. "And I told Shin-chan I was leaving?"

"You told him, but not me?" Asuka asked in an annoyed tone. "I thought you trusted me!"

"Asuka, I really don't have time for that", the Major sighed. She knew the day ahead of her was going to be filled with unpleasant conversations; Doctor Akagi, never the most pleasant person to work with, has gotten far worse in that regard recently. "I'll be out for four days or so, but Kaji will take care of you two, so don't worry."

"We don't need a babysitter", Asuka scoffed. "We're responsible people!"

"I'm sure", Misato's eyebrow twitched. "But I'll be sleeping better knowing a responsible adult is with you most of the time."

"I thought you just said Kaji-san was watching us?" Shinji chimed in, making Asuka stifle a chuckle. "Here, Asuka, your bento", he handed her a red box. "I think we shouldn't be holding you anymore–"

"Thank you, Shin-chan, I knew I could count on you saving me from oppression", Misato said with a smile and not without some relief in her voice.

"–so please tell us one thing", Asuka picked up, exchanging glances with Shinji and clearly being barely able to contain a rather wry smile. "Namely: when were you going to tell us that Toji Suzuhara was chosen to be a Pilot?"

Major Misato Katsuragi was a military officer with the experience befitting her rank and exceeding what would normally be expected at her age. It made her quick recovery easy – but was not enough to mask the surprise obviously painted on her face. "How did you know? Did he tell you?"

"He didn't", Shinji reassured her immediately. "He's good at keeping secrets. But–"

"We have our sources", Asuka interrupted, her tone suddenly annoyed. "Never underestimate a smart person facing a good mystery. So… why didn't you tell us?"

Misato let out a heavy sigh and shook her head. "I'm sorry", she began; to Asuka's surprise, her tone sounded genuinely apologetic. "I should have. I was going to tell you once the activation test was done. And don't blame him, he was ordered not to tell anyone."

"The test in Matsushiro, right? And Toji is the pilot?" Shinji asked insistently.

"Yes", Misato confirmed. "This is just another model, quite similar to Unit-02, but we still have to do a test off-site before it can be accepted into our Cages."

"If it's similar to Unit-02, why not take me, then?" Asuka interjected with dismay in her tone.

"Commander's orders… and Doctor Akagi's choice. It's going to be a quick run, nothing really can go wrong, so we wanted to keep you all here, at full combat readiness", Misato explained patiently. "Don't worry. You'll be fighting alongside him in no time. And speaking of the devil, if you don't let me go soon, I'll have to explain myself to Doctor Akagi… and she's going to give me a big helping of her own personal hell."

"Right. What's wrong with her lately, anyway?" Asuka asked as she stepped aside, allowing Misato to put her shoes on.

"I think it's the stress", Misato replied evasively. "She always had a lot of difficult work, right? And recently, she was quite busy."

"I hope she gets better", Shinji said with a worried smile. "Thank you for being honest with us, Misato-san. Please take care… and please eat regularly while you're there", he added in a more serious tone.

"Yes, yes", she rolled her eyes – but not without a smile on her own. "And you two take care too. And please make sure Kaji eats right, will you?"

"Yes, Misato-san", Shinji replied with a chuckle. "And if he asks why I'm doing that, I will tell him it's on your orders."

Misato gave him a surprised, then a confused look – but decide not to comment on that. "See you in a few days!"

***

"Your opinion?" Asuka asked after the door closed behind Misato and the two started to put their shoes on.

"I believe her", Shinji shrugged. "I'm sure NERV ordered Toji to be quiet. I don't like her hiding things from us, sure, but I understand why she did."

"Well, so do I, I just don't agree with… well. Anything. She didn't even give us any good reason, except 'I was going to do it later'", Asuka pointed out.

"I guess it's the military way?", Shinji suggested. "We are, in a way, her soldiers."

"I don't see any rank emblems on this uniform", Asuka pointed to the collar of her school uniform. "Do you? And the plugsuits are also suspiciously unranked."

"I don't know, maybe we're too young?" Shinji suggested as he pressed the OPEN button. "Do you have everything?"

"Yes", Asuka confirmed and stepped out. "Too young to have a rank, but not too young to pilot a– what the hell are you doing here?" she suddenly exclaimed with disgust.

A very out-of-breath Kensuke Aida needed a few long moments to recover. "Is Major Katsuragi still inside?"

"No?" Asuka replied in confusion and growing irritation, suddenly aware that this annoying boy was about to deprive her of a significant chunk of her private time with her own, personal boyfriend. "Why would you need her for?! Don't you know how she deals with perverts and stalkers?!" she hissed.

"I'm no pervert! And I'm not stalking her! I just wanted to–" Kensuke tried.

"You appear, in the morning, at her door", Asuka pressed on mercilessly. "How do you even know where she lives?! No doubt, you're here to catch her unaware, and hoping she would open the door in the negligée she sleeps in!"

Shinji pondered for a moment whether he should intervene and save his friend from the brutal assault he found himself under – but he decided this was not a good idea for two reasons. First, it meant Asuka's wrath would have to focus on somebody else – most likely, him – and while he could do something like that for someone innocent, he was not quite sure Asuka was entirely wrong about Kensuke's motives; it was, after all, quite odd for him to appear here at this time of the day. Second, Kensuke was quite sure to accompany them both on the way to school, making any private conversation impossible and depriving them of an opportunity to hold hands or – as he sometimes dared to – steal kisses on the way. Truth be told, his conscience was gnawing at him a bit for letting Asuka tear his friend apart – but he silenced it with a certainty that this was not an innocent person suffering here.

"…and I suggest you don't approach her closer than fifty metres, because I saw her shoot ten-out-of-ten at thirty with her regular handgun", Asuka wrapped a stream of accusations, implications, and threats up. "And if you want to start defending yourself, don't bother", she scoffed at the boy who was definitely not in any condition to defend himself. "Come, Third, we have a bus to catch."

***

About five minutes later

"That was brutal, Asuka", Shinji whispered as they reached the bus stop; Kensuke was following them, but his steps were slow and shuffling, leaving him well out of earshot.

"Well, yes", she admitted freely. "And? Listen, I know you like this nerd for some reason I cannot fathom… but I don't, and you should appreciate I didn't rough him up for bothering us with his presence."

"Well… you didn't have to point it all out", Shinji suggested.

"Hey! I didn't burst out the highest calibre, okay?" Asuka scoffed. "He'll recover."

"I'm afraid to ask what the highest calibre is…" Shinji gave her a worried look.

"If the gorilla was in his place, you'd see it. The highest calibre is for the biggest targets", Asuka explained.

"Um… can we declare Toji a… protected species for now?" Shinji tried. "At least until the whole Piloting business straightens out?"

Asuka pondered for a moment. "Okay, but with a self-defence clause in place", she agreed. A questioning look from Shinji prompted her to elaborate. "If he does something stupid or provokes me, the protection is gone."

"I hope it's not a setup for 'his existence is provocation enough'", Shinji remarked, somewhat bitterly.

"Oh please", Asuka scoffed. "Sure, his presence is offensive–"

"Asuka…"

"–his behaviour makes actual gorillas ashamed–"

"Asuka…"

"–his face is an insult to the concept of a divine Creator–"

"Asuka!"

"What?" she turned around, with a snarl.

"Where are you going?" Shinji asked, standing a few steps away from her, confusion clear on his face.

"To the bus stop, stu– oh", she stopped herself, realising she was a good dozen steps past it. "You see for yourself: even thinking of him lowers the IQ of the smartest person in the school! But no, I'm going to hold to that. But not for longer than necessary to sort this crap out", she declared as she walked back to the actual stop, effortlessly ignoring the mentally beaten and morally broken form of Kensuke Aida.

"Thanks", he smiled carefully.

***

The drive to school was an awkward one, as it was fully expected to be; even though Kensuke chose to keep his distance, his presence limited the possible interactions and once again made Shinji's conscience gnaw at him. "I think I should talk to him", Shinji finally began with a low voice once they got off the bus.

"Whom, the nerd? Don't worry, he's used to that", Asuka shrugged, shooting a look at Kensuke, still shuffling a dozen metres behind them. "He'll recover."

"Um… him too, but I was thinking about Toji", Shinji explained. "Tell him we know, and–"

"Sure, go ahead", Asuka interrupted with a shrug.

"Huh. Okay?" Shinji looked at her with surprise.

"What?" she asked, clearly confused. "What were you expecting, some dumb shit about the power of friendship? Maybe advice?"

"Actually, some comment about wasting my breath or another remark about his intelligence", Shinji admitted.

"Hey. He's dumb or he's playing dumb so convincingly that he got me fooled", Asuka shrugged. "And while I don't like him – or him", she indicated Kensuke with her thumb, "I get that you three are friends. You want to talk, go talk to him, I don't care. Just don't let it dig into your time with me and be home on time to cook for me."

"And soon enough that Kaji-san doesn't complain?"

"Ah. That. He'll come late, anyway, he always does", she shrugged. "And I still don't get why Misato thinks we need a babysitter, anyway."

"Well, my guess is on the suspicions that we might have… you know. Did something we shouldn't have done", he suggested with some blush creeping on his face.

"Ah. That", Asuka replied with a similar blush. "I told her this was bullshit!"

"I don't think she believed you", Shinji stated.

"Thank you, Pilot Obvious", Asuka rolled her eyes. "Oh well. Maybe we'll be able to squeeze him for more information? He usually sleeps with you in the room, interrogate him! Use the techniques I taught you, and you'll have everything by the morning!"

Shinji gave her a doubting look; from all he knew about the man, he could be a trained spy, and Shinji already had his opinion about "techniques". Still, he decided that arguing with Asuka was not exactly something he had any desire for right now; Toji weighed too heavily on his mind.

***

Shinji intended to talk to Toji just before the class – but Toji was faster. "Hey, man, why the long face?" he exclaimed, jumped up, and went to intercept Kensuke and give him a close look-over. "What have they done to you? Shin-man, what is this?"

"Well, I went to ask something of Major Katsuragi, and–" Kensuke started.

"Man, you won't let it go, will you?" Toji interrupted with a heavy sigh. "It's a bad idea. A very bad idea. Trust me."

"How would you know?!" Kensuke scoffed. "I'm number one when it comes to enthusiasm!"

"Yeah. Hard to miss. Let it go, man", he said, surprisingly absentmindedly and went towards the door.

"Hey, Suzuhara, where are you going?!" Hikari Horaki called behind him. "Class begins in a minute!"

"Yeah, yeah, I know…" was the only thing that came from behind the door.

Hikari shook her head in disbelief and tried to go after him, only to be stopped by the teacher entering the class which triggered her reflexive "Stand! Bow! Sit!" routine and made it impossible to pursue.

'There goes my chance', Shinji sighed heavily as he exchanged glances with shrugging Asuka. 'I'll catch him on the lunch break, I guess…'

***

A few hours of class, an ineffective ambush at the cafeteria, and a few minutes of thinking like Toji later

"Toji…" Shinji spoke quietly, standing a few metres away from the boy in question.

"Hi, Shin-man", Toji replied without even turning from the railing he was resting against, overseeing the school's courtyard. "Let me guess. You already know."

"Yes", Shinji confirmed and approached a few steps. "We… found out."

"Sorry. I couldn't tell you", Toji said, still not turning. "They made me sign those papers."

"It's okay", Shinji took the last few steps and leaned against the railing next to Toji. "I know how they do things in NERV. They promised you something, right?"

"Heh. Why? You think I wasn't like Kensuke? All eager?" Toji chuckled sadly. "Yeah, not my style. My sister's getting better care", he explained, his eyes still staring into the distance.

Shinji knew he should have said something in reply – but could find no words. 'I'm not good at this', he realised with a mix of sadness and annoyance and defaulted to what he was most used to: "I'm sorry."

"For what?" Toji turned to him with some annoyance on his face. "It wasn't your fault. Now I can defend her myself, right?"

"Not what I–"

"Don't worry", Toji interrupted and turned back to look over the yard. "I'll be fine. Just… don't tell Kensuke, okay? I'll tell him once this is done. He'd go pester the Major again, and she deserves better than being bothered like this."

"Okay", Shinji nodded.

They stood like this for a few long minutes; Shinji was trying to think of something to say – but, to his dismay, could find nothing fitting.

"Shin-man", Toji broke the silence at some point with a small smile on his face, "Ayanami was here. Looking for you, I think. I think she has her eyes for you."

"Ayanami?" Shinji asked in a confused voice. "I don't think she 'has eyes' for anyone."

"I don't know", Toji smiled. "Just a hunch."

"We should go back. I think Class Rep is looking for you", Shinji changed the subject, not knowing what to think of his friend's remarks.

"I'm not going back", Toji shrugged. "Tell them I got called away or something."

"Are you sure?"

"What are they going to do?" Toji chuckled sadly. "Kick me out?"

"Okay", Shinji chuckled. "See you then."

"See you", Toji replied. "Thanks, man", he added after a few moments.

Once more, Shinji was not sure how to reply; he just smiled, trying his best not to be awkward – and left his friend behind to his own thoughts. Contrary to what Asuka might have said about Toji, he had plenty of those.

He just did not like to share them too much.

***

The awkward expression must have stayed on Shinji's face, though, as he was greeted with a questioning look from Asuka; he answered it with a quick nod and sat down with Kensuke to have a quick lunch – and to apologise.

"Hey, idiot", Asuka interrupted their quiet talk not long later. "Don't wait for me, I'm going with Hikari after school."

"Sure", Shinji nodded, wondering whether to point out her earlier remarks about 'dig into his time with her' and eventually deciding it would be too obvious for the listeners. "Just don't be too late, I won't say a word, but…" he trailed off.

"Yeah, I know", Asuka rolled her eyes. "Don't worry, it's Hikari, I suppose her bedtime is, like, eight. See you at home."

"See you", Shinji confirmed and turned his attention back to Kensuke. "Come on, I know she was cruel to you this morning, but it's not that she has a vendetta against you. Just… don't do this again."

"I know, I know", Kensuke shivered. "I just really wanted to be a Pilot!"

Shinji stifled a sigh. He usually enjoyed those lunch breaks and he did not mind listening to Kensuke's ideas and rants – but this was one of those cases when the boy's enthusiasm was incensed and at the same time, there was no mitigation from Toji's attitude. And so, the lunch break ending sound that echoed across the halls brought only relief, even if it meant the bento remained only half-eaten.

***

Later that evening

"I'm home", Asuka reported as she opened the door and sniffed the air. "Nice smell."

"Welcome home, Asuka. Did you eat already?"

"Nope. Feed me", she demanded as she entered the living room. "Is Kaji here already?"

"He's not, he called and said he's going to be late", Shinji replied as he raised his head from above his homework and got up to start the stove.

"He'd better call if he was going to be on time, really", Asuka remarked with annoyance in her tone. "Well, more time for us."

"He's like that, this can't be helped", Shinji shrugged with a smile. "How did your talk with Hikari go?"

"You know, this is exactly what I can't stand with the Japanese thinking, this can't be helped attitude", Asuka shook her head.

"Can't be helped", Shinji repeated with an apologetic smile. "Sorry about that."

"Ugh", Asuka rolled her eyes. "Exactly that. Whatever. Hikari just wanted… to talk, I guess. About boys, mostly."

"Um…"

"What? Do you think I'm stupid?" Asuka scoffed. "It was her who did the talking. She thought your gorilla pal was in love with Ayanami."

"Toji? No way", Shinji shook his head.

"So I told her. And then I told her that even if he was, Wondergirl is total crap when it comes to relating to people, so… what's that face?" she furrowed her brow.

"Ah, nothing", Shinji shook his head as he filled Asuka's bowls before putting them in front of her. "Toji told me he thinks Ayanami has 'eyes for me', as he put it."

"Whoa, for him, it's Goethe-level of poetry", Asuka chuckled. "I sure hope you're not going to be trying to test that theory?" she asked with just a hint of a threat in her tone.

"Asuka…" Shinji let out a heavy sigh; absentmindedly, he noticed he had been doing it increasingly often recently.

"What? I'm serious, don't, I don't want to be forced to commit some emotionally-motivated murder", she stated matter-of-factly. "Mm, good stuff. Thanks. Anyway, how did your talk with the gorilla go?"

"I told him we knew, he asked that I didn't tell Kensuke", Shinji reported. "He's rather at ease with all that."

"That's it?" Asuka asked in disbelief. "You were there for most of the break!"

"Well, part of it was looking for him", Shinji pointed out. "And besides, he's not exactly a talkative type."

"Heh, good for him, because Hikari is", Asuka said – and her ears immediately went red. "Scheisse."

"What? Oh", realisation suddenly appeared on Shinji's face. "When you said 'boys'…"

"Scheisse", Asuka repeated. "Me and my big… I told you nothing, okay? She'll make me scrub floors daily if she learns I told you."

"I thought she'd want Toji to know?" Shinji asked, his expression confused.

"Yes, she does, but not in a direct way", Asuka tried to explain. "She wants him to take a hint and take her out, but without telling him directly, so he'd never be completely certain, just certain enough for him to take a chance."

"Isn't it a bit too complicated? What if he doesn't take a hint? He's got quite a lot on his mind right now."

"Well, it's always complicated, right?" Asuka shrugged. "It's not that we had a very straight path, too."

"Well, yes", Shinji recalled the few confusions he suffered through. "Sorry."

"…and we still have a few kinks to iron out", Asuka added with a sigh. "Anyway, keep your mouth shut about it."

"I will", Shinji agreed. "Can I count on you keeping quiet to Kensuke?"

"Please. I don't even talk to him except when I'm ripping him a new one", Asuka shrugged once more.

"And about that…"

"As long as he doesn't appear at our doorstep, or try to stalk me, you, or Misato, or try to take photos without asking first and taking 'no' for an answer–"

"I think he's afraid of you now", Shinji interjected.

"Good. So should be. It's the order of things."

Shinji let out yet another heavy sigh. 'I suppose that's just how Asuka works', he concluded, happy that he understood his girlfriend at least a little bit.

***

About two hours and all the homework later

"Asuka… are you sure about that?" Shinji checked as the girl of his dreams settled in his lap. "Kaji-san can walk in any–"

"Hardly. It's about eight thirty now, he said he wouldn't be before ten, so he'll be here in about an hour. We're safe until then", she declared.

"Wait, he said ten and–" Shinji protested.

"He's a spy. Or at least he's acting like one. And spies have some funny habits regarding the clock. He explained that to me when we were talking aboard the ship, on my way here", Asuka elaborated. "You know, stuff like 'if you came on time, it means you're horribly late already' and all that. So, my guess is nine-thirty. If you want to be really safe, then we can pretend to be good kids around nine, but that'd be too much. Besides, I have some practice in hiding on cue, right?"

"Fair point", Shinji relented; his resistance was dwindling anyway in the face of Asuka's hand already locked around his neck and his hands already on her sides, ready to take a little bit more chances.

***

'That's the spirit!' was the remark that the free part of Asuka's mind generated as Shinji unexpectedly dared to move his kisses to her neck instead of going back to her lips after they made a pause in their kissing to draw some breath. She was already happy, even impressed, by the fact that he – granted, awkwardly and clumsily, but in the end, effectively – managed to flip their position and place her on her back and underneath him. Even as fully clothed as they were – assuming 'shirt and shorts' could be called 'fully clothed' – this allowed for far more contact and reassured Asuka that the boy actually listened to her. 'Perhaps I should give him some more sugg-shit!'

Her good mood evaporated within the split second it took her to realise that the beep she heard was, indeed, from the door. "Stop and drop", she hissed out, "you're the blanket now" she added and accentuated it with a definitely not a very gentle push.

"Ow" was everything Shinji could say as he hit the floor. 'At least I covered you instead of dropping you to the floor…' he complained internally. Still, despite his bitter thoughts, the shock brought him out of his reverie quickly enough to get up and scramble out of the potentially suspicious area before Kaji was even able to remove his shoes.

"Hello, kids!" he called out. "I smell something nice in the air, is there something left for a tired traveller?"

"Good evening, Kaji-san", Shinji managed to say in as collected a voice as he could muster; he hoped that the cold water splashed on his cheeks would reduce the heat he felt – and, as he was quite sure, was treacherously visible on his face. "I saved you some, I hope it'll be enough. Please, come in. Tea?"

"With pleasure", Kaji agreed. "Is Asuka home?"

"Hello, Kaji-san!" Asuka waved from the couch, careful not to show her own face; she was painfully aware that her blush would be far more obvious. She nervously checked her watch and cursed quietly; it showed 21:14, and that meant she failed in her predictions, a fact that filled her with shame. "Don't mind me, I was just taking a nap. Beauty sleep, you know."

"Of course", Kaji chuckled, immediately annoying Asuka with the lack of the obvious 'but why would you need it?' compliment. "So, how you two have been?" he started – and Shinji was happy to pick the conversation up.

***

Less than two hours later

"Are you asleep yet, Kaji-san?"

'There goes my rest and my peace', the man sighed internally. "No, not yet", he replied. Shinji was rarely the one to reach out, and even if it was a long day, rejecting a chance to help him felt wrong.

"How could I know if I'm a good friend?" Shinji asked.

"Well, that came out of nowhere", Kaji replied with a sincere surprise in his voice. "I thought you'd ask about Katsuragi… or Asuka. You two seem to get along a little better than the last time I saw you together?"

"I… don't think so", Shinji tried, happy that Kaji could not see his face. "She's just in a good mood recently", he added; it was, after all the truth, and the fact that he and his actions were the reason for said mood was not very relevant to the case at hand.

"I see", Kaji replied, leaving Shinji unsure whether he believed him or not; the darkness was a double-edged sword, after all. "Why do you think you might not be a good friend? Did you have a fight with your buddies?"

"No… the opposite… I think", Shinji replied, happy to present his nervousness as uncertainty. "I… I went to talk to him, and we just… stood there. Not talking, just looking at the city together."

"Did he try to talk?"

"No. He just… stood there. And I didn't know what to say."

"It's fine. It was most likely enough", Kaji replied with a smile audible in his tone. "Support is not always advice or help, or even listening. It's the women who talk a lot. Men… are often quiet."

"I see. And how it is when it's a man and a woman?" Shinji continued.

"Then, there's no friendship", Kaji stated firmly. "Men and women are just too different. The character we use for 'she' literally means 'the woman far away'. To us, women will always be on the distant shore. Basically, there's a river dividing men and women, deeper and wider than any ocean", he elaborated.

Shinji could not help but think there was a lot of bitterness in that voice. "I don't understand adults", he let out a sigh.

"People can't understand each other completely", Kaji replied. "Who knows if you can even understand yourself? Of course, that's why we spent so much time trying to understand ourselves… and others. That makes life so interesting."

"And difficult", Shinji added.

"And difficult. But it's worth it", Kaji's tone indicated a smile once more.

"Is it why you're trying to understand Misato-san?" Shinji asked and immediately decided this was, most likely, not his best idea.

"Just like I just said – there's the deepest river between any man and any woman, and the closer you try to get, the deeper it gets", Kaji replied, his tone somewhat surprised, but to Shinji's relief – not offended. "Is this about Asuka, Shinji?"

Shinji, once more, was glad that the darkness hid his reactions; even if his voice could betray him, his suddenly red ears would not. "I don't know how to deal with her, sometimes", he replied evasively but truthfully. "I want to get along with her, but she is… difficult."

"You're very kind with your words, Shinji", Kaji chuckled. "Yes, she is. But this is what makes her the willful woman worth pursuing, isn't it?"

"Just like Misato-san is?" Shinji replied automatically – and realised that this time, he had to hit a nerve. "I'm sorry" he added a moment later.

"Go to sleep, Shinji" came after a few long seconds. "You have school tomorrow", Kaji added. 'And you're asking too many questions', he added quietly. 'I can see Katsuragi's influence on you now… for better or worse.'

***

The moon stood high over the city, and Asuka tried her best not to look at it.

She knew Shinji would do his best in getting the dark secrets out of Kaji; after all, she trained him well and motivated him to do well. She was just worried that Kaji could as easily get Shinji's secrets – and that would be very bad. On the other hand, it has been almost an hour, and there was no surprised yell; she could even swear there was some soft snoring from the room those two shared.

'Perhaps he succeeded?' she mused. 'Well, I shall learn that tomorrow!' she decided – and having pushed that aside, she could finally fall asleep.

***

The night was dark, and Shinji's head was full of thoughts.

'No friendship… maybe he's right?' he mused with worry and sadness. 'But… it's right there in the English word, right? "Girlfriend", "boyfriend"…' he recalled the words from his English classes. 'Is it different in the West that it is here, or maybe it's just words?'

He wondered whether he should not ask that question – but the soft snoring was telling him that it would be rather a rude thing to wake Kaji-san to help alleviate his doubts. And so he was, as usual, left alone with his issues. 'And I can't even try to take those to Asuka… she's been helpful with many things – and I have to ask her for help before the Math test', he reminded himself, 'but I can't ask her about this! And Kaji-san… I didn't know he was such a pessimist. He's always smiling!'

The night was dark, and the thoughts refused to go, letting him fall asleep only after once more reaching the conclusion he voiced before: 'I just don't understand adults.'

And here we are, ready for Bardiel. Who is, of course, coming next chapter.

Since this one is a little bit longer than usual and I am scrambling to wrap up my other, longest fic ever, you can expect the next chapter around late August or early September.

I agree Shinji in fact that's kinda playing games that really no one has time for but it is "young love" as they said. :D

Yeah, and it's intentionally convoluted and complicated. It's based on an actual quote I found somewhere about a girl trying to pick a boy up, and I heard similar dramas in my high school (I had more girl friends than boy friends, so I had good insight in the mess that was the dating scene). Also, let's face it, Japanese society is quite conservative, so I guess borderline forcing a boy to confess the feelings was still preferrable to doing it yourself if you're a girl. Makes you wonder how lesbian couples are formed, really.

I'm so glad my social bubble is far more open and direct about interests. Then again, I'm a little bit older than the characters here ^^'

As downbeat as Shinji found the conversation, it's still better than the one he had in canon, if for nothing else then this time he has some positive emotional support from his dating Asuka to give him some counterweight to Kaji's cynical and weary advice.

I'm taking it as a good sign that despite being forcibly out of the conversation, Asuka has at least enough trust in Shinji that she's not overly fretting about how it will go, and can go to sleep knowing he will talk to her about what he can tomorrow.

And hahaha, I am so far behind in catching up that the next update is very very soon.

Kaji was never exactly a sunshine, despite trying his best to pretend otherwise and maintaining his cheerful persona. Sounds like another adult Shinji knows, right?

She's not perfectly fine with leaving it in his hands, but she can't exactly barge in. And she's confident in The Training she gave him!
And hahaha, I am so far behind in catching up that the next update is very very soon.
Not too soon, sorry. I got caught up with, well, catching up that the update won't happen in the first week of September. Realistically, it will be the second week. But it's nice to have you back here!

What happened, son? – chapter 3.

WHS?, chapter 3. – "I don't like this"

The next day, in the afternoon

The two phones went up simultaneously – and the kids shared a surprised look over the table full of handbooks. "Really? Now? With Misato away?" Asuka complained before rushing towards the door.

"Well, maybe they have a spy at NERV?" Shinji quipped as he slid his shoes on. "Maybe Kaji-san is doing one more job on the side?"

"Seriously?" Asuka scoffed, half-amused, half-annoyed at his comment. "You think he'd be so disloyal?"

"This was a joke, you know", Shinji remarked over the sound of their steps as they were rushing down the stairs towards the black cars that were surely waiting for them next to the apartment already.

"Well, we'd be sure if you'd been a bit better with interrogating him!" she pointed out.

"Hey, it's not that I didn't try, but he's an adult–" he objected as they reached the ground and indeed found their transport waiting for them.

"You could've just… ah, never mind", she waved her hand. "See you at NERV!" she called out just before she jumped into the first car at hand and slammed the door, leaving Shinji outside. "Pilot Soryu reporting. What's up?"

"I have the Second Child, taking route five-seven, ETA ten minutes", the black-suited driver reported via his radio before turning to answer Asuka. "Don't know, we've got an order for all pilots to assemble at NERV. An Angel alert, unconfirmed."

"Including the Fourth Child?" Asuka probed.

"I wouldn't know, Soryu-san", the driver replied with a small shrug. "I'm on Ikari-Soryu duty today."

"Wait, his name is first on that label?" Asuka asked with almost a hiss in her voice, her eyes narrow. "How come?"

The driver's expression was clearly saying "I'm not paid enough to deal with this", but he wisely decided not to voice that sentiment. "I don't know, please ask the one responsible for the mobilization plans. I believe this means Major Katsuragi. I'm just following orders."

"Like saying that saved people before…" she sneered but decided not to press the issue. Her pre-battle anxiety, a beast that reared its ugly head every time but was never allowed to show itself outside, was there, strong as always, ready to stoke her fears as always, and commanded most of her attention right now – as always.

***

"Pilot Ikari reporting", Shinji declared in a worried voice as he climbed into the next car, closed the door carefully, and reached for the seatbelt. "Can you tell me what happened?"

"…route two-eight. ETA thirteen minutes", the driver finished his report over the radio before looking back at Shinji for a second. "Negative. All we know is that there is likely an Angel heading here, and we follow the city-in-danger protocol. You'll know once we get there."

"Of course", Shinji accepted. "Thank you."

"Strap yourself in, boy", the driver added with a somewhat sheepish expression. "Your friend's limo just snatched the safer route, and the orders say clearly 'no longer than fifteen minutes', so… I hope you've got a good stomach."

Shinji did not reply; the suddenness of the acceleration pushed him into the seat and made him realise what a blessing was the presence of LCL inside the Evangelions.

***

About fifteen really scary minutes later

"Asuka! What's going on?" Shinji, still a little pale on his face, managed to catch up with the girl as she headed to the elevator that would take her to the Cages.

"All they told me there was an 'incident' and they're deploying us as a 'precaution'", she explained with a scoff. "And you're late."

"The driver told me you grabbed the safer route", Shinji explained in an apologetic tone. "He drove so fast I thought I'm going to have a stroke!"

"Excuses", Asuka scoffed as they reached the elevator and started it. "You should've–"

"Asuka! Can we drop this now?" Shinji interrupted her with a pleading expression. "What else do you know?"

"Nothing", she replied with a shrug. "Everyone's so busy that I had to grab some technician to tell me what I just told you. I'm sure there's something amiss, but hey, who are we to be told?" she grumbled. "Just some random people who pilot those machines everybody depends on their survival", she continued, her voice dripping with venom.

"Well", Shinji took a quick look and decided that the elevator was safe enough before carefully reaching for her hand. "I don't like this, but let's focus on piloting the best we can?"

"Spare me the pep talk, okay?" Asuka scoffed with a notably less venomous voice; it was not the first time she noticed that her venom glands did not work too well when she was starting to feel warm – and that boy's hands clearly had some magical properties. "I know what I am here for, better than you. I trained for this for a decade, remember? Doesn't change the fact that I don't like to be a mushroom", she continued and lowered her voice before continuing, "First Suzuhara being made a pilot without a word to us… and now, this."

"I'm sure they would've told us", Shinji disagreed. "Eventually."

"Do you really think Misato would've told us if we didn't pressure her?" Asuka checked, eyeing him. "Don't be naive, she was about to walk out."

"Well, it was early in the morning, and she was busy…" Shinji countered.

"Listen, I get it, you like her", Asuka let out a heavy sigh. "And so do I, I've been friends with her for longer than you know her. But she's a soldier and our commander, and that means that sometimes she'll do bad things to us, like sending us in harm's way or lying to us, just because she–"

She interrupted suddenly and yanked her hand out of his in a nervous move the moment the sound of the elevator's arrival reached her brain.

"Pilot Ikari. Pilot Soryu", Rei Ayanami acknowledged their presence in her usual style.

"Wondergirl", Asuka addressed her with certain disdain just after Shinji spoke the proper greeting. "How come you're here?"

"I was at the headquarters when the alarm condition was set", the girl explained.

"Convenient", Asuka commented with suspicion in her voice. The contact with Shinji now broken and the cold coils of anxiety grasping her soul again, she could feel her venom glands return to full operability. "Or maybe–"

"Ayanami", Shinji interjected, "do you know what happened?"

"There is a possible Angel presence and we are being deployed as a precautionary measure", she recited.

"Wonderful", Asuka scoffed once more. "Maybe we should call the NERV helpline. Perhaps–"

"Battle stations, Level One", an announcement blared through the internal speakers across the NERV HQ. "I repeat, battle stations, Level One."

"An order to launch all Eva units has been given" followed via the room's speakers. "All pilots, proceed to your entry stations."

"Well, it's been a pleasure, Wondergirl", Asuka's voice regained its usual venom. "Duty calls."

Rei did not answer – and Shinji could only sigh.

***

The Entry Plug slid in without any issue; no matter how unlike anything else the sensations were, Asuka was used to them. The worried 'this is not okay' still rattled in her mind, of course, but she knew all too well that going into battle all tense would cause her to underperform, and this was not something she could allow herself to happen. 'But it'd really help if we'd normally have some idea what we are against. Some visual feed. Something!'

She shook it off; it was time for the wave of sensations that accompanied the proper synchronisation with her Unit – the warmth that soothed the soul, the familiarity of something that she had known for her entire life, the feeling of being welcome bordering on an embrace. Only then she realised that, despite her attempts on relaxing or at least quelling her anxiety, her hands were clutching the mechanical controls almost painfully. She took a few breaths, colder external LCL perceptibly replacing the already-warm one in her lungs – but as much as it helped avoid breaking the servos with excessive force, it did nothing to ease her worries. 'And they just recruited the gorilla… what if this is some suicide mission, and he's supposed to replace one of us? No, it'd make no sense, we don't have a – shit, we have a new Unit!' she realised, a chill running down her spine. 'No, they'd not be that insane… would they?'

She shook the dark thoughts off the best she could – but it did not help much. She, of course, knew a medicine that would help – and she was rapidly approaching a state when this medicine became not a convenience, but a necessity. 'Ach, Scheiß drauf', she finally decided – and with a sigh, punched the comm button.

***

Shinji Ikari was focused. Admittedly, it was mostly about him trying not to get even more nervous in this uncertain situation than about anything else, and it was not exactly working. And so, when a voice came over the internal comms, he welcomed it as some measure of distraction. Especially since it was Asuka's voice. "Hey, Shinji, don't get your ass killed", he heard her speak as his Unit was speeding through the bowels of NERV HQ. "I'd rather have my back covered once it comes to something", she added with a smirk.

"Asuka…" he looked at her with a soft plea in his eyes and a smile on his face. "Can you be serious just now? You know I always have your back."

"Not if you're fried, and no, I can't be serious unless you want me to go crazy over this situation", she disagreed with surprising intensity. "Don't worry. We got this covered, even Wondergirl is here."

"I know. I hope you're right", Shinji shook his head. "I wish Misato was here, though."

"So do I, but stop worrying", she insisted, her expression serious. "Focus on piloting. You did it before, you can do it again. I'll be close by."

"I know", he smiled and relaxed as much as he could under the circumstances, savouring the last moments of silence before the storm.

***

A few minutes later, high over Japan

"I really don't get it" came to Shinji over the direct channel from Unit-02, Asuka's voice sounding irritated even over the low-quality of the audio stream. "I used to love flying, and now I'm nauseous every time we take to air!"

"Maybe the food is to blame?" he quipped, hoping that his anxiety did not seep through his voice enough to worry Asuka. "I told you that dessert would be too much; we should've waited until after homework."

"Hey! Don't you guilt-trip me over how much I eat, I'm not Misato! I have the perfect metabolism!" Asuka protested vehemently, offence obvious in her voice. "Besides, it's all your fault."

"How can it be my fault?" Shinji asked in a confused voice.

"You cook too well, that's how!" she exclaimed as if this was the most obvious thing in the world. "And I can't resist good stuff, and you know it. You should've made that dessert after we did the homework, not like you did, in full view. How could you expect me to wait while all the time I'd know it's there?"

"Hey, could you not blame me for your lack of self-control?" he protested. "And you can always tell me not to make anything for dessert at all, right?"

"What are you, stupid? It's the most–"

"Pilots, prepare for release", a calm, deep voice of the transport squad leader interrupted them over the comms. "Your designated drop zones are being relayed to your panels now. The release begins in five seconds from my mark and will put you in the trajectory, but safe landing is on you."

"Roger that", they both confirmed and braced in preparation for a manoeuvre they rarely got to experience.

"Mark!" came just a few seconds later.

"Hurrah! Somersault time!" Asuka exclaimed in an elated voice as the clamps clanked, releasing Unit-02's form.

"Asuka! Bad idea!" Shinji exclaimed–

–but it was too late. Unit-02, released from the clutches of its holder, began its acrobatic descent. Shinji wanted to add something – but the sound of clamps unlocking around him and the sensation of freefall quickly forced him to focus on directing the descent and using the AT field to soften the drop. 'Well… I can't blame her, can I? We rarely get to fly…'

***

"Damn it, couldn't they just let us walk here?" Asuka grumbled to nobody in particular, her voice pained.

"It's too far to cover in one battery, even when running, Asuka", Shinji replied over the general comms, "and you saw how much damage we cause when we run. I guess Misato prefers to pay for air delivery than pay damages to all people along the way", he concluded, his voice betraying some cheer despite the tense situation.

"I guess", Asuka shrugged with a hint of a smile. "But it's not Misato this time, remember? She's at Matsushiro, overseeing this – oh f-shit!" she exclaimed, her voice turning cold.

"Asuka?" Shinji probed in a worried voice, a horrifying suspicion seeping into his mind a moment later, along with a sudden sinking feeling. 'An incident. Where could an incident happen?'

"Command, why are we out here?" Asuka asked over the direct channel to HQ, her thoughts exactly the same. "There's no Angel alert, are we here as some decoration? An honour guard? Or is this just a combat exercise? Come on, don't treat us like mushrooms!"

"There's been an incident at Matsushiro", a tense, unnaturally level, and forcibly calm voice of Lieutenant Maya Ibuki replied. "The Commander ordered Level One battle stations. We don't know anything else yet."

"Wait, Misato-san was at Matsushiro! What happened to her?" Shinji interjected, his stomach turning into a ball of ice as his worst suspicions became reality. "Is she okay?"

"We can't contact them yet", Lieutenant Ibuki replied, her voice still tense. "We sent a rescue force, but it will take a while."

"No way… what will we do?" Shinji asked nobody in particular, trying his best to keep his voice calm; regrettably, he was not exactly satisfied with the results.

"What we always do", Asuka chided him, her voice level and determined; there was a cold ball growing in her gut, but she knew letting that feeling overtake her would be her doom. "Leave the rescue to professionals, and fight if needed. Stop worrying and focus, this will do us most good", she added – and as she was speaking those words, unexpected calm descended on her. 'I can do it. I am not alone', came to her mind. 'And he better remember that, too!'

"Agreed, but how can we fight an Angel by ourselves?" Shinji asked in a voice full of doubt, eliciting a quiet eyeroll from Asuka.

Rei Ayanami's face appeared on the comm display as she joined the conversation: "Commander Ikari is taking direct command. We should be fine."

Her tone was impassive as usual, but there was something else about her, something Shinji could not put his finger at for a moment, not before the face disappeared.

***

Rei Ayanami was easily the calmest of all the Pilots under most circumstances; never was it as obvious as just before combat. The moments when she was about to go into battle were ones where she could almost feel something that passed for excitement for her; after all, fighting the Angels was one of her purposes in the Scenario, one of the reasons she existed at all. She did not relish in that, that was a feeling strange for her; but it was the time she felt something, and as such, it was welcome. But it was not the only reason she enjoyed those moments inside her Unit; there was something else.

Inside Unit-00 was the only place in the entire world where she did not feel incomplete.

This has never been a very strong feeling; she simply always knew that she was imperfect: many things that would make her human were missing. She was aware that some of it was caused by her unusual upbringing, others by the imperfections of the process that was used to create her, and some further elements were likely lost by the process of reincarnating her the first time.

But here, inside the Plug slid into Unit-00, it was different.

Here, she felt at home. Here, she felt welcome. Here was familiar.

She never mentioned that to anyone, though – and nobody ever asked. Commander Ikari was politely asking her about details of her life, but it was nothing but a protocol; his questions rarely varied, and thus, neither did her answers. Doctor Akagi and her staff asked questions regarding her physical and mental condition – but never asked about her feelings or sensations.

And so, those remained hers and hers alone, along with those confusing moments, like the one when before one of the previous battles, she suddenly realised she never knew how chocolate tasted and suddenly wanted to try it. Or now, when she suddenly started to wonder how it would be to swing on a swing. And equally strange was the new feeling of being taken care of, a feeling she did not have for a long time, a feeling that just appeared.

All that caused a rare reaction in her, a reaction she usually reserved for interactions with the only parent figure she knew, and that rarely so.

Rei Ayanami was smiling.

***

"Shinji, did you see what I saw?" came in on a direct channel from Unit-02.

"Not sure? What do you mean?" he replied, his head tilted in confusion. "There's nothing in my field of vision. You're far further out."

"Not on the field, Dummkopf…" she let out an LCL-dampened sigh, smiling with a hint of both exasperation and affection; it seemed that the Dreadful Mystery of the Wondergirl's Smile had to wait for some better time. "Never mind. And about far… Hey, aren't we spread a little too wide?" she directed a question at somebody else. "I can't even see any of the other units between all those hills and overpasses and valleys, let alone have them in my cover fire range. How are we going to support each other?"

"Those were the Commander's orders", Lieutenant Ibuki replied over the general comms. "He wanted to cover the most ground."

"I don't like this", Asuka grumbled. "This is fighting with nearly no backup."

"Well, we managed to converge on target when we had to hold the sky, right?" Shinji countered with surprising confidence in his voice. "We should be fine."

"Since when are you the optimist?" Asuka scoffed.

'Since I get to kiss you and hold your hand' appeared in Shinji's mind – but knowing that the comm channels were not exactly private, even those technically called so, he kept that to himself.

He could not know that the wave of warmth that embraced him after that thought was not entirely his own.

***

"Target is approaching" sounded on Shinji's comms. "All units prepare for ground combat", an order followed, along with an image of the hunched form of Unit-03 relayed to all Evangelion feeds via the HQ's systems.

"No way", he uttered in confusion. "An Angel? Is that an Angel?"

"Correct, that is the target", the Commander replied tersely.

"You say this is the target, but it's an Eva, isn't it?" Shinji kept asking, his voice increasingly confused. "How can this be?"

"Do not concern yourself with that", came in an equally terse answer in his father's voice. "Destroy the target."

Shinji did not reply to that; he just kept tracking the slowly approaching figure, a feeling of dread overtaking him with every step it came closer.

"Shinji", he suddenly heard in Asuka's voice over the Unit-to-Unit comm; her voice was focused, cold, and borderline fearful; that alone made his heart skip a beat. "It has a pilot", she stated with absolute certainty.

"Gods, no", he replied with disbelief as the horror of realisation slowly seeped into his soul; he knew that Asuka was right – but the cruel reality of who the pilot had to be was too much to take. "If he's inside, we can't fight it! How can we–"

"Scheiße!" a curse came over the comms, interrupting his words. "How could it move so fast?!"

His hands tensed on the controls as the worry for her and the uncertainty of the situation seized him. 'What should I do?' rattled in his head, over and over again.

"Scheiße", Asuka repeated, her tone now more determined, annoyed, and angry than distracted or worried.

Shinji suddenly realised what was going on; this was exactly the tone she had when she was done with thinking and about to move into action. "Asuka, don't!" he exclaimed in a panicked voice. "We can't fight it!"

"Shut the fuck up and get here if you want to help!" she yelled back as if through clenched teeth, making his hands tighten on the controls again.

"We can't fight it!" he repeated pleadingly – but deep down, he already knew that Asuka was no longer listening.

"Pilot Ikari, remain silent unless you have something relevant to say" came in a harsh tone over the comms in the voice of Commander Ikari, making Shinji realise that he did not deactivate the uplink to the HQ before replying to Asuka. "This is your target, and you will fight it if it becomes necessary. You will be directed."

Shinji once more did not reply, his head a turmoil of conflicting thoughts, his hands clenched on the controls, his mind aware that not so far from here, Asuka was about to engage a dangerous enemy, an enemy that held his friend hostage. He knew that this was the wrong thing to do; he knew that they simply could not fight that Angel, no matter what his father said; he knew that they could not endanger Toji. He also knew that Asuka would not heed his call; he knew that she would fight, no matter what.

And because of his preoccupation with this knowledge, he failed to realise that his greatest worry was the fact that he was not at her side in this fight.

***

Unit-02 was standing a few hundred meters away from the hunched form of the ex-Unit-03, her prog knife gleaming in her hand. The rifle she started the encounter with was somewhere near, destroyed in the first skirmish by the initial attack and the barely successful dodge; it was now useful as a club at best; and so, she paid it no heed. Both Units faced each other, neither willing to make the first move, both looking for a weakness that refused to show.

Asuka, while still keeping her eyes trained on the target, took a few deep breaths; she was doing her best to calm herself down. It did not work too well, though; the anxiety was not caused by the combat itself – once the fighting began, it went away, as it usually did. The real problem was that she was painfully aware of the dilemma she was facing.

'It's some damned Greek tragedy, isn't it? Damned if I do, damned if I don't… if I fight that thing, he'll hate me for endangering that dumb gorilla', she mused as she measured the enemy and watched for any movements that would telegraph an attack. 'If I don't fight and kill that thing, it will kill me, it will then kill him, and, let's face it, Suzuhara will not just walk away from it, because either this thing will destroy everything including him, or Ayanami will get lucky and will stick something sharp through it – and him – anyway… without much regard for his life, like the good soldier she is.'And it would have to be Ayanami', she realised. 'He will not fight this thing, not with that jock inside, and he will die if it reaches him. So, I must kill it for him, or I'll be crying at his funeral…'

She slowly pushed her doubts aside; the twisted form of the Angel kept staring at her, but she knew it would not last forever. She had to act.

She took another deep breath, her eyes still wide open. There was no need to blink while submerged in LCL, after all; it remained purely a reflex, and she knew that some reflexes could kill you in combat.

'If he hates me for that, he's even more of an idiot than I thought was possible', she continued with an internal scoff, feeling more confident with every second and with every word. 'I'll sort it with him out later', she finally decided, even as a part of her was wistfully telling her this was not going to be simple.

Asuka measured the twisted shape in front of her for the last time, reported "engaging the enemy!" into the comms – and charged, her prog knife in front of her, the hand that held it supported with the other, her body weight put behind it, both eyes fixated at the target, and her body ready to adjust to any movement or counteraction the target was going to make.

It was a simple plan, based on an equally simple assumption that while the target might have been fast, its general abilities were about the same as that of an Evangelion it was based on, or no more than just a bit better. This meant that any hand-to-hand combat would be resolved by a contest of skill, ingenuity, and mental endurance, traits Asuka believed herself to have in abundance.

The problem with this assumption was also simple: it was entirely wrong.

================================================================

And so the fight begins. I intended to have it also conclude here, but it has proven impossible with the time I could take for writing; as it is easy to notice, I wasn't even able to stick to the plan of posting this early September. Thus, the battle itself will take most of the next chapter, coming sometime in later October.

What happened, son? – chapter 4.

WHS?, chapter 4. – "Face it"

"Engaging the enemy!" reached Shinji via the comms, and the trembling of the ground – an all too well-known sign of a charging Evangelion – followed seconds later.

'She is going to kill him', a grim thought appeared in his mind. 'She always fights like crazy, she's always ignoring her safety, but she is good, she'll manage, she's not in danger', a parallel thought, trying to rationalise away his fear for Asuka's life that gripped his guts. 'But I should be there, helping her!' he realised as he heard another frantic report from Asuka; the enemy seemed to be far too good at dodging for an Evangelion, and it was now clear it became something more. 'This whole tactic is simply not working! I can't just stand here! If we do it together, we could save Toji!'

"Permission to assist Unit-01, sir!" he suddenly demanded, to the surprise of everyone – except his own and another, suddenly smiling soul.

"Negative", came the immediate, almost angry response of Commander Ikari. "Hold your position. You will engage the target as the final resort."

"But sir!" he tried to protest. "This is not–"

"Hold your position, Pilot Ikari", came a repeated, insistent order from the Command Centre.

Shinji could feel a wave of anger rising, growing with every word he heard. "Sir! Asuka is fighting without support!"

"Silence, Pilot", came a terse reply. Shinji shivered at the tone. "Do not question your fellow Pilot's abilities. You will engage when ordered, not sooner."

Shinji did not reply to that; he refused to believe that trying to convince his father was a waste of time and effort – but for the moment, he felt like he was hitting a wall. And breaking an order, despite the circumstances, still felt like an impossible feat for him. Seeing no other option for him at the moment, he simply focused on what was coming on his comm lines in the hope he could support Asuka this way.

***

Meanwhile on the battlefield

'This thing is something else'
, Asuka realised quickly enough to avoid another strike delivered from an angle it has no business coming from. 'Evangelion is just a shell, it's a full Angel!' followed – and she had to quickly suppress the dreadful 'I can't beat it alone'. It was, after all, a sentiment that had no place in her mind: she was here alone, and she was going to defeat it. And not just defeat: she was going to disable it, pull the Plug out, and only then tear the enemy to pieces. She might not have had the same feelings towards the boy inside as Shinji did: it was no secret that she considered him dumb, boorish, and obnoxious. But he was a fellow Pilot, a fellow warrior, perhaps even a battle brother with some – well, a lot, but still – stretch of the imagination, no matter how crap he might have been otherwise.

And taking someone like that hostage was a crime deserving only one punishment – a brutal death. Also, that dumb boy was Shinji's friend, so saving him from this mess would make Shinji happy beyond measure – and making the idiot happy was something she actually liked doing.

Unfortunately, Asuka did not seem to be able to execute that particular death sentence – and that particular good deed – with any reasonable effectiveness. Her main issue was that fighting to disable was, by its very nature, considerably harder than fighting to kill. The fact that the enemy did not seem to have the same scruples was only adding to the quickly growing list of Asuka's issues. 'I might have a problem' was the main sentiment in her head right now, aside from a quickly diminishing array of her tactical options.

'Scheiße!' came through her mind when yet another blow from an odd angle dented her armour and winded her for a short moment. She knew that both this effect and her increasingly heavy breathing were nothing but psychosomatic reactions – after all, it was her Unit that was doing the effort, not her, and bodies of Evangelions were quite durable compared to the human body – but that awareness notwithstanding, it was her who felt increasingly tired. She had always preferred quick victories – dominating and destroying the enemy with her brilliant tactics, with her unquestionable wit, with the doubtless skill of her manoeuvre, or – if everything else failed – with her sheer might and undisputable agility.

Except that the chance to do just that was diminishing with every strike that she failed to deliver, with every dent that appeared in her armour, and with every just barely successful dodge. It was not that she was not landing any strikes, no – the enemy was bleeding from several wounds already; the problem is that this seemed to do nothing to the target – and Unit-02 was becoming beaten up with every exchange of blows. It was becoming increasingly obvious that no matter how she refused to admit it, she was facing the enemy who had every conceivable advantage over her: it was faster, more agile, able to dodge most of her attacks, and – most likely – less prone to getting tired. Moreover, it held a hostage, making most of her possible approaches too risky to consider, let alone apply.

And her awareness that Shinji would likely hate her if she failed to save the gorilla was making it even worse.

'Great', a thought appeared in her mind, 'What can I do if I can't disable the bastard? I can either kill it and have the boy I love hate me forever if I as much as wound his friend… or die to it and still fail to save his friend! Some alternative! Or worse, the idiot would not hate me, since he would die next! No!' a sudden determination filled her as she realised the grim necessity of what had to be done. 'I have no choice. God above, I know I really suck at praying, and I won't beg for my life… but at the very least let me not fail the ones that rely on me–'

Her impromptu prayer got suddenly interrupted by a stabbing pain in her side; she did reflexively move out of the way of the blow, but since she was paying not enough attention, some of the force of the attack connected and made yet another, worryingly deep, dent in the armour.

She shook the pain off and focused on the enemy form landing after it delivered the strike. "I'm sorry, Toji", she whispered with genuine sadness mixed with rising anger toward the Angel. "Forgive me, Shinji" she added with an even quieter voice, this time underscored only with sadness; a few tears she shed dissolved in the surrounding LCL without a trace.

Bracing the half-broken knife against her body, she assumed the position – and started her charge at the target.

At that moment, a sudden 'Asuka, gib Acht!' sprang in her mind, seemingly from nowhere – and she realised that the Angel's body started to rapidly change: bone-tipped tentacles burst from the flesh of the creature at the newly opened slits, three of them anchoring the abomination in place and the rest stiffening in the front of the gaunt body, forming sharp pikes ready to take the Unit-02. Asuka's eyes widened in fear as she quickly recognised the obvious, cold, and cruel truth: her inertia was too great, and thus, she had no chance to stop in time.

She knew that no matter how much she tried, there was only one outcome: Unit-02 would be pierced and impaled, she would suffer horribly, she was quite likely going to die in agony, and all she ever did before that moment would have been in vain.

'Forgive me, Shinji', she pleaded in her mind as her eyes closed, her tears mixed with the LCL once more. 'See you soon, Mama…'

A moment later, horrible pain rippled through her body, clouding her vision and making her scream.

It took her a few seconds to realise that this pain was wrong: was not coming from her torso or arms as she would have expected from where the enemy held the weapons, but from her legs – and her vision and her sense of balance suggested that she was, right now, ploughing the rice fields with her face. A burst of pain coming from her neck along with another feeling of vertigo followed, invalidating any attempts to get her bearings. She felt dizzy, she was in horrible pain, and quite sure that she should be dead or dying by now – but was, somehow, still alive despite Unit-02 being, without a doubt, mangled in a nasty manner. The only thing she could vocalise at the moment was a simple question: "Was zur neunten Hölle war das?!"

Since there was no reply of any kind in the hectic but still composed comm chatter, she quickly tried to move her hands; they worked, at least as much as it was possible in this position. When she tried to do the same with her legs though, the feedback made her curse aloud from the pain; she quickly decided that she does not want to try that again, at least not for the moment. Next, she tried to move her head – and it had, to her rapidly growing irritation, a similar result; the wave of pain told her that it was a distinctly bad idea and reminded her of several more German expletives she eagerly and loudly shared with anyone that could be listening.

She was, of course, quite happy to be alive.

But this life was definitely far too painful for her comfort. And she was not going to keep her opinion about that to herself.

Even if nobody seemed to care.

***

"Pilot Ayanami, prepare to engage", came over the comms in the voice of Gendo Ikari, directed at Unit-00. "Unit-02 had been disabled. The enemy is coming your way."

"Yes, sir", Rei Ayanami confirmed in her usual, calm voice and focused on the situation awaiting her.

Unit-02 seemed to have failed and was likely heavily damaged. For some reason that thought filled her with worry, worry that went beyond the expected reaction to the loss of support in battle. It felt, for an unfathomable reason, personal.

Rei Ayanami paused for just a moment.

She understood the concept of personal feelings, of course; contrary to what others thought of her, she was not emotionless. She had feelings, preferences, emotions, and goals. They were just far less pronounced than those of her fellow Pilots and her classmates: they were mostly aimless, their attention scattered across numerous things, while hers was focused on her role, the role that was quintessential to the Commander's Scenario. It was not that she did not have any personal interests or distractions more appropriate to her perceived age – they were just not really important.

But this was different. This felt like her worry was specifically focused on Unit-02 – on the Evangelion, not on the Pilot.

And she did not understand it.

Her musings were suddenly interrupted by the yelling over the comms, yelling that came in a voice that almost palpably radiated with anger. "Zur Hölle mit euch! Of course I got disabled! I was whacked over by this fucker, if I had someone to watch my back, I'd still be fine!" Asuka yelled. "Ayanami, watch your back, this fuck shapeshifts!"

"Acknowledged", Rei replied.

She did not understand the wave of relief that washed over her, either.

But there was little time left to muse over that. Her enemy was approaching, and it was her duty to kill it.

There would be time for musings later.

After all, she always did have a lot of time.

***

'What am I supposed to do?' rang in Shinji Ikari's mind in several variants, his fear, worry, and despair growing. 'Asuka is down, she's alive, but can't do much… I hope she's not injured, I can't help her now! Maybe Ayanami is going to stop him… but will she be able to protect Toji? He is still there! And… if she fails, then I have to fight this… Angel?! Evangelion? with Toji inside… I can't! But… if I don't…'

All this was rattling in his head all the time; he was alternating between bouts of panic and moments of calm – and he was under the impression that the only thing keeping him from falling to it was the realisation that this was, most likely, going to bring death, cause destruction, and make Asuka hate him.

And so, he kept hoping for many things: that Unit-00 would stop the Angel without harming Toji; that the Entry Plug would somehow come loose during the fighting and land somewhere safe; and, finally, despite his fears, that he could help resolve this situation somehow – preferably without having to fight.

The thought he refused to allow himself was that it would take a miracle for any of those to happen.

And NERV was not known for miracles.

***

Meanwhile, not too far away

Rei Ayanami was never a very good Pilot. She was, without a doubt, reliable: she remained calm in most situations and she was quite well trained – but her synch rate was never high and while she was motivated to fight as a part of her unwavering faith in the Scenario, she was never truly devoted to it. There was no driving force behind her fighting; she fought because she was told to fight, just as she would die if she was told to die.

And the latter seemed to be quite likely an outcome right now.

It was not that the enemy was particularly powerful; it certainly lacked any high-energy attacks that would pose a serious threat. Rei was also not very concerned with the Pilot, likely stuck in the Entry Plug partially sticking out of the ex-Unit-03 neck. First, Unit-00 fire would be directed at the front, limiting the danger to the said Pilot by shielding him with the matter of the Angel's body; second, the defeat of the Angel was the priority, since its victory would mean death to all, and thus, the concern for anyone stuck in it was secondary in the face of potential annihilation; third, the situation could not be resolved in any practical manner while the Angel was active – and she deemed an attempt at subduing it an ineffective tactic.

The problem was different: the Angel was both difficult to hit and capable of delivering numerous small blows that were quickly accumulating and making the always-unwieldy Unit-00 even less able to match its agility.

The fact that Pilot Soryu seemed to shout out a large amount of chaotic and not very useful advice in a rather profane manner using an odd mix of Japanese, English, and German was also definitely not helping Rei's performance.

The Angel dodged another of her shots as it performed an improbable, gravity-defying manoeuvre, landed, and launched another strike with an appendage it seemed to hide under the armour until now.

"Ayanami, watch for the spikes!" Lieutenant Ibuki warned.

Rei felt a sudden, uncharacteristic annoyance and a desire to reply with a request not to waste her time with obvious advice – but decided it would serve no purpose other than further demoralise the Command Centre. "I will take it under consideration", she replied instead while firing another volley, checking the ammunition count, and watching for the signs of a counterattack.

Not that it helped her against an opponent whose movements defied gravity – and who did not care much about damaging its own body.

Rei Ayanami was used to feeling pain; it was, after all, a constant companion in her life, be it from the imperfections of her body, the psychosomatic side effects of her soul's incompleteness, flaws of her prototype Unit carrying over via the synchronisation, or finally the repeating ravages of battle. But being used to it did not mean, of course, that she stopped hating it, even if the hate was somewhat subdued, just as all her sensations were.

And this pain was even more pronounced; it was coupled with a gnawing sense of having failed someone, a feeling that came a moment after a series of vicious strikes disabled the legs of her Unit and kept sending wave upon wave of pain through her body, crowned with a powerful blow to the lower torso that made her vision go dark for a few seconds. When she regained her bearings, she realised that the Angel was just atop her – and something odd was starting to drip on her.

The next few seconds were a mix of pain, a horrifying sensation of a vile presence that was definitely not her own, and the sound of her own screams.

But in all that suffering, there was something else, something that gripped her attention for a moment: a wordless, distinct and unknown, but at the same time, a confusingly familiar presence that suddenly made her feel far less alone – and far more able to endure what was happening to her.

"Unit-00 is severely damaged, the pilot is wounded!" a message in a tone Rei disliked pierced through her confused mind and banished the familiar feeling; that almost shrieking tone strongly contrasted with the one she remembered with a memory that was also not exactly her own, one patient and calm. She tried to place it, she tried to match it with a face, she tried to–

"Pilot Ayanami, eject, I'm sending retrieval force" interrupted her. Another wave of displeasure and dismay passed through her, augmented by very similar feelings from her Unit-00 – but there was very little she could do now.

And so, she quietly obeyed, her relief of the pain ending with the synchronisation cut tainted with her understandable worry for Shinji Ikari – and her inexplicable worry for Unit-02's predicament and the danger Unit-01 was in.

***

"Pilot Soryu, eject as well", Maya Ibuki's voice turned her attention to Asuka; that voice was still worryingly close to sounding panicked, but Asuka had to begrudgingly give the Lieutenant the credit – despite the rather dire situation and obviously growing fear, she managed to perform to the NERV standards. "There's nothing you can do now and you're just exacerbating the damage on Unit-02."

"Ah fuck that, don't feed me that bullshit, I can still do something!" Asuka still protested with vitriol in her tone as she kept crawling across the rice fields, ignoring the pain and the persistent warning on her displays; after all, it was not so bad if she did not try to stand up. And she could bear the pain; it was not as bad as the stampede of the increasingly dark thoughts inside her head, after all: 'Wondergirl got disabled, so much for the brilliant plan of the Commander Can't Command For Shit… Where's Misato when you need someone with actual battle experience?! And now it's all on the idiot, and my only chance to do anything is to crawl up to him and do something… and he is going to need my help. He always does!'

"Pilot Soryu, you're essentially immobile, have no useful weapons, and are nearly at the maximum range of your cord. Eject", the voice of Lieutenant Ibuki sounded again, having the sole effect of making Asuka more annoyed. "Please", the Lieutenant added, her almost pleading tone making things even worse.

'I don't need you to pity me! He. Needs. My. Help.'' rattled in her head. "Focus on helping that idiot, okay?" she demanded aloud in response, her tone angry and openly hostile. "He's going to need all the help you can give him! And let me worry about my cabling myself!"

Unit-02 kept crawling in the mud, Asuka's mood now far beyond sour and quickly approaching acidic – especially since her conviction that this was the right thing to do started to go thin – and the power cable was quickly going taut. The sight of the enemy performing another of its weird manoeuvres in the distance did not help her at all.

'He's going to get himself killed for that brainless jock', she realised. 'If only I had been less sentimental… that's where listening to boys gets you, Soryu', she chided herself. 'Don't listen to him! Okay, maybe in the kitchen he knows what he's doing, but not on the battlefield! Not when it comes to something that I've been trained about for most of my life! Hostage lives are important, yes, but not as important as yours!'

A stray thought was telling her to listen to the orders, telling her that the pain could be too much to bear – but she ignored it. She was not going to give up – and, in the end, she seemed to be right; the pain abated not long after and she was able to keep crawling. "I hope you're happy, Third", she quietly, her thoughts entirely focused on Shinji. "Now you're on your own, idiot! Use your brain!"

Of course, she was not entirely convinced the intended recipient of those words had a functioning brain right now. At least it did not seem to be so from the discussion he was having right now with the Command Centre.

***

"The target is approaching you", Shinji heard from the Command Centre in a voice he did not want to hear. "It will contact you in twenty. You must destroy it."

"But this target is… there is a Pilot there!" he tried to object as he watched the oddly shaped figure, an almost-but-not-quite-Evangelion, approach and stop for a short moment; he suddenly felt watched, observed, almost scrutinised. 'Like a bug on a pin… is this what we are for them? Bugs to be squashed?' a stray thought appeared in his mind. The cavalcade of thoughts that rumbled in his head a few moments ago departed without leaving any useful conclusion, leaving him in an unchanged state of indecision, confusion, worry, and borderline panic – a state he knew was a very bad one to have in the battlefield.

"This is irrelevant", the Commander cut him off. "You have your orders. Carry them out."

"But–" Shinji tried to protest again – only for the orders to be simply repeated in a more insistent tone.

His attempt at objecting a third time never left his lips: the ex-Unit-03 suddenly roared and leapt at him, making him land on his back in the mud and lose his breath. Unit-01 recovered to its feet quickly enough, but the Angel wasted no time; one of its limbs elongated suddenly. A moment of confusion on Shinji's part – and a very late attempt at dodging – ended up with a hand on Unit-01's throat, momentarily joined by another, similarly elongated and just as strong. Shinji tried to scream, but while nothing really constricted his throat, it did not matter.

Something was telling him to fight, to do it not for his father, but for Asuka, for himself, even for humanity. He pushed that thought aside. He knew his death would bring nothing; he knew it was pointless – but fighting his own feelings was an impossibility. Even the dim realisation that he could still try, make an attempt at breaking the enemy's hands, or at least aim around the Plug – all this no longer mattered; his world was slowly going dark.

"Problems in life support! The Pilot's in danger!" came from a distance in the voice of Lieutenant Ibuki.

"Not good! Cut the synch rate to 60%!" the Vice-Commander's voice ordered.

"Wait!" the Commander's voice interjected firmly. "Shinji, why don't you fight?"

It took Shinji a few seconds to realise this was question directed at him; as much as he did not want to answer, he felt compelled to do so: "Toji is in there, Father!" he tried in a strained voice.

"Irrelevant!" Gendo Ikari's voice was firm. "It is an Angel! Our enemy!"

"But… but I can't!" Shinji protested with increasing effort; the pressure on his throat felt like it was increasing. "I've got to save him! I just can't let him die!"

"You'll die", Gendo stated dispassionately; a stray, angry thought in Shinji's head just noted it as another proof that he, personally, never mattered to his father.

"I don't care! It's better than killing Toji!" Shinji managed to get out. "I won't – I won't fight!" he exclaimed – or, more precisely, tried to exclaim; the psychosomatic sensation of being choked made it impossible to give those words the appropriate tone. "I'm sorry, Toji. I can't save you… and… Asuka… I hope you'll get out of this alive… somehow…" he whispered.

The delicate touch of a hand on his cheek felt unreal; he realised it had to be a hallucination of a dying mind. But it did not matter. He welcomed it, nonetheless, along with the comfort it provided.

***

"Never mind! Cut all synchronisation between the pilot and Unit-01", the Commander suddenly ordered.

"Cut it?" Lieutenant Ibuki asked, suddenly sounding more confused than panicked or concerned.

"Correct. Switch the control circuit to the dummy plug", the Commander confirmed firmly.

"But the dummy plug system still has a lot of problems, and without Doctor Akagi's approval…" Lieutenant Ibuki protested.

"It'll be of more use than the pilot", the Commander explained curtly. "Do it!"

"Yes, sir", the Lieutenant nodded and started to type the commands into the console. She might not have been shown the details of the program – but all the necessary systems were in place and she knew well how to activate them.

She also knew enough to fear that option.

***

The jolt of having the synchronisation cut along with his eyesight suddenly returning and the sudden lack of pain brought Shinji back to reality – just in time to realise that the inside of the Entry Plug was no longer providing any visual input; it was nothing but emergency lighting now.

Confused, he tried to do something – but quickly enough, he realised that all he could do was to helplessly tug at the controls. He could not understand what was going on; his father gave up on talking to him, issued a few odd orders–

"What is this?" he asked in an increasingly panicked voice as he saw a few red lights coming up inside the Plug, heard an odd hum rising around him, and felt the Unit he was in making a few jerky moves, so very different from ones he was used to. Taking a quick look around, he noticed the large label OPERATION DUMMY SYSTEM displayed in glowing, red letters on one of the modules behind his seat. "What did you do, Father?!" he yelled out, his voice fearful; he was now a prisoner inside an Evangelion, locked in the plug without any control over anything except his own body. 'No… I'm just like Toji now. Did Father just do this to me? Did he do this to Toji, too?' he suddenly realised the horrifying similarity. "Father! Answer me!" he demanded, his tone a mix of fear, anger, and desperation.

There was no answer from the Command Centre, though; instead, a few more red lights went up inside the Plug and a few more jerky moves shook his surroundings, indicating that something bad was about to happen – and he was going to have no control over it. 'Asuka… I'm sorry… Toji… forgive me…' were his last thoughts as he closed his eyes and waited for the unknown but inevitable end.

But the end refused to come; the steadily rising hum suddenly fizzled out, sunlight pierced his eyelids – and once he opened his eyes, the outside was visible again – and the red lights around him were almost gone.

Confused, he looked around and saw additional words appear on the device – words like FATAL, ERROR, and EMERGENCY. He craned his head to get a better look – and this was the moment that a wave of unbelievable anger and fury, coming seemingly from nowhere, hit him – and a sound reached him through the LCL and the Evangelion's body, a sound that was a source of both hope and terror.

It was an ear-piercing, bone-splitting, soul-piercing roar.

***

"The response signal is in… critical error! The system is not responding!" Lieutenant Ibuki reported; a few tense seconds passed as she tapped at the keyboard. "Correction! The response signal is gone! Unit-01 indicates the system is damaged!"

"Explain", the Commander demanded, his voice wavering for the first time since the battle began.

"I – I cannot, sir! Unit-01 no longer accepts input to the Dummy Plug system! It no longer accepts–"

The sudden roar interrupted her frantic report, freezing her on the spot and heralding another awakening of an Evangelion.

***

A wave after wave of anger was washing over Shinji; he was, once more, feeling the pain of having his throat crushed – but it was no longer crippling him. Now, it was just making him angrier.

He was not entirely sure at whom was he so angry – but it did not matter that much right now. All that mattered was the death of that thing in front of him, a thing that hurt Asuka and Rei, a thing that held his friend hostage, a thing that simply offended him by its very existence.

A small part of his mind was telling him that this was wrong, that this was not his anger, that his real enemy was someone else, that he should stop – but he paid that voice no heed. The fury in him was simply stronger, and the man that deserved to die from it was too far.

For now.

Shinji felt like there was no longer a distinction between his hands and the hands of the Evangelion; he grabbed both of the elongated arms of the monster in front of him in one motion – and snapped both of them in one quick gesture.

The Angel howled – and Unit-01 responded with another roar, pulling the enemy to itself by the bleeding appendages and rising from the half-prone position in the process. A hard punch delivered to the Angel's abdomen pushed it away for a second – only for it to become a target for a vicious, if surprisingly precise, beating coming from Unit-01. A blow fell after blow, all of them focused on the front of the Angel's torso; the metal on the Unit-01's hand began to crack and hiss in contact with the occasional burst of Angel's ichor – but the assault finally exposed the Core.

Unit-01 roared again – but instead of just punching, it grabbed the ex-Unit-03 head by the neck with a surprisingly precise motion, pulled it closer – and delivered a powerful knee-kick into the Core. Seeing no real effect, it growled – and kept repeating the blow, again and again, putting steadily increasing pressure on the neck of the creature.

When the cracks started to appear, Unit-01 roared again, headbutted the top of the Angel's head – and when a part of the damaged helmet fell off, bit into the exposed tissue.

The Angel's dying wail carried over the valley; the final kick in the Core was merely a coup de grace.

***

"Eva Unit-03, no, I mean the target, I mean the Angel, it is completely silent", the voice of Lieutenant Aoba cut through the stunned silence of the Command Centre. "Unit-01, stand down and return to the retrieval point."

There was no answer – and the observation station still showed the Unit-01 methodically dismembering the Angel, limb by limb.

"Pilot Ikari, stand down", the Commander ordered. "The enemy was defeated."

This also had very little effect. It took the ex-Unit-03 reduction to a mangled, headless torso for the Unit-01 to suddenly drop to one knee – and freeze in that position.

"It is finished" came a grave voice, a voice that was simultaneously angry, defiant, hateful, and – first and foremost – tired. "Just as you wanted, Father."

Gendo Ikari did not reply – and nobody dared to look upon his face to watch the man's reaction.

***

Asuka Langley Soryu, still refusing to eject from her damaged Unit but no longer trying to test the tensile strength of the power cable, shivered at the roar. 'Shit. Again. What the Hell is about this Unit? Or is it him? So much pent-up anger, that he makes even an Evangelion mad?!'

She could barely see what was going on but judging from the stunned silence of the Command Centre and the fact that the battle was still raging, she could conclude that Shinji was winning – or, at the very least, not losing. She felt a small prick of envy in her heart; 'how come he did better than I? I'm the warrior here, he's just a reluctant tag-along!'

A sprout of something appeared in the distance; Asuka did not have to make a guess what that is, all she could hope was that it was coming from the Angel and not the machine her boyfriend was piloting. 'If that's him, then it seems that this anger – what the Hell?!' she reacted to an object landing just a few metres away from her.

It was a huge head, missing an eye, cracked, bloodied, and marred by teeth marks.

'God above. I'd better never make him angry again. And I thought that I had a temper…' a stray thought appeared in Asuka's mind as she tried her best to contain her revulsion at the gruesome sight. 'That's some "Seven against Thebes" level of fucked-up…' a more rational part of her mind added before the not unexpected, but somewhat embarrassing wave of relief at him having survived the battle took over the moment his report of the victory came in.

She knew it was not over for them. She still had a problem with him over his stupid stubbornness, and she knew all too well that he will have a problem with her over her actions – and she was definitely not happy with how all this went.

But this would not be the first time they disagreed, and she was not going to let it tear them apart. But this had to wait; as her breathing slowly became steadier and she calmed down, the pain of the shattered bones finally reached her in full force. And so, she decided it was finally time to leave.

"Pilot of Unit-02, ejecting", she reported to nobody in particular. "Send someone to pick me up once you're done with the idiot, okay?" she added, doing her best to sound flippant – but, most likely, convincing no one.

***

The darkness of the night surrounding Shinji Ikari would be calming if not for the odd smell, spreading even in the LCL, most likely coming from the damaged module – and for the fact that it would take a lot more to calm him down right now.

He was still angry. Angry at his father for forcing him to fight, angry at Asuka – and, to some degree, at Rei as well – for not taking his warnings and pleas seriously, angry at himself for giving in to the fury. He was also angry at Unit-01 itself for fuelling his fury, perhaps even causing it; he remembered how strange it felt in the beginning, and for all he knew, the whole module malfunction might have triggered this berserk. His anger – especially at his father – was augmented by the uncertainty gnawing at him; he did not know what happened, and, as usual, nobody was telling him anything.

On the other hand, he had to admit that he had a surprising amount of control for a berserk – and his anger was mitigated, even if just a bit, by the good news of Toji's survival. This was actually the reason he was waiting right now – since he and Asuka were clearly not injured, Toji and Rei were evacuated first – both of them for immediate medical assistance and observation for possible contamination.

But all the good news could not calm what was boiling in his heart.

And, if he was to be honest with himself, he did not want it to calm down.

"Shinji?" a sudden voice interrupted his dark thoughts.

"Misato-san!" he called out, relieved that at least one of his worries was unfounded. "Are you all right?"

There was a long pause, one that made his stomach sink once more before the voice on the other side responded. "I'm fine, Shinji. But… I owe you an apology", she started – and carried on before he could protest.

And to his regret, this conversation did little more than change whom exactly was he angry at.

And so the fight ends, and resolutions will follow. Expect the next chapter sometime in December.

Ah, yes. The obligitory final nail in Gendo's coffin. It happens in every evangelion fic and never fails to be cause me physical pain. Thankfully, it ALSO never fails to make his inevitable comeuppance even more cathartic.

It's also a perfect picture of how Gendo is a complete idiot. When your people on the field say "we need backup," they need backup. When your support staff says "your people in the field need backup," they need backup. Holding your people back and making them fight one at a time is just about the worst thing you can do. Not only that, but Shinji has no training, Rei is conditioned to be completely obedient, and Asuka had a toxic family life. All three of them have been intentionally isolated for most of their lives, because he (and SEELE) think that'll make them easy to manipulate. Except, that sort of manipulation requires that they come to depend on the manipulator. Ultimately, what's been done to them is just ham-handed brutality. When they double down on the suffering, that's only gonna piss them off, which is actually shown here: Shinji at least, and possibly Asuka too, want Gendo dead for this. So do the souls inside the evas.

Gendo (and SEELE) rely entirely on "prophecy" for their decision making, and half their conclusions about what will actually happen are entirely guesswork and wishful thinking. They have no idea what the fuck they're doing, but they insist that they do because they simply can't imagine not knowing everything and being in complete control. It's part of why Yui is so fatalistic in this story, even though she's a "good guy," she's fallen into the same trap of thinking that SEELE is competent.

Gendo is... single minded. He things that the prophecy will cover it all anyway, and he tends to forget that if the prophecy says (for example) "only a knight of pure heart can defeat the beast", it doesn't mean the knight will do that. And yes, the Pilots being dysfunctional is a good thing for him short-term... but definitely not long term.
It's part of why Yui is so fatalistic in this story, even though she's a "good guy," she's fallen into the same trap of thinking that SEELE is competent.
Yui is difficult. On one hand, she wants only the best for Shinji. On the other, as you say, she's trapped by possibly false assumptions - and she's heavily biased by her odd upbringing. In modern terms, she's locked in a bubble that doesn't reflect reality.

On a somewhat related note, I'm running late with the update; all I can say is some stuff happened. I hope to be able to post it before the end of December, but it's likely that it'll go up early January.

What happened, son? – chapter 5.
A word of warning - this one may hurt a bit.

================================================================

WHS, chapter 5. – "Do you really care?"

The late evening in the Katsuragi residence was quiet in all the wrong ways; Asuka and Shinji both were aware of the elephant in the room – but there was a certain, unspoken and tentative mutual agreement not to touch it just yet, even if it meant bearing the emotional strain of the events on their own and ignoring all the steps they made together in communication. They both knew, more subconsciously than with full awareness, that touching upon this elephant would make it go on the rampage in an instant.

And risking that before things resembled some normalcy or, at the very least, until Misato was back to serve as some kind of balancing factor, was unwise. Even by Asuka's reckless standards.

And Shinji was very skilled in pushing things into the back of his mind as long as he had something to do. It was, of course, unpleasant to the degree of being almost hurtful – but he was good at bearing that, too.

***

They were given a ride home after being released from the Entry Plugs and given the shortest debriefing in the history of their operations. The debriefing, in defiance of the regular protocol, included both of them at the same time and was conducted by visibly distressed Lieutenant Ibuki. Shinji felt that it was actually him who reassured her things would be fine, not the other way around. Even Asuka, despite being visibly tense, refrained from her usual snappy remarks; the fact that the Lieutenant did not even try to question any of her actions despite her obvious disobedience and disregard of orders spoke volumes about the situation.

'Let me guess… There's going to be hell to pay, and I'm going to pay it, through my nose and thrice over when Misato is back?' Asuka mused as she finally took her place in the back of the Section 2 limousine. 'And, considering the tab that the idiot is going to present me with sooner or later, I might just as well start stealing Misato's liquor, the taste might be foul, but at least it soothes the soul… this is going to be a fun week', she concluded bitterly as she stared out of the car's window, doing her best to avoid eye contact with the boy that sat next to her.

It just felt safer.

***

Shinji was initially confused about why they were riding in the same car – but quickly realised that it had to be because the danger was over and there was no real risk that any of them would be accidentally killed on the way. He shivered, the awareness of how dangerous his life had become once more finding a way to his consciousness – and this brought his thoughts right back to Toji. 'He got the worst of it on his first day… far worse than any of us. I might've been inside a Unit that went crazy once… well, twice if we count today… and what actually happened today?' he suddenly wondered, his train of thought suddenly derailed. 'I just remember getting really angry, and then…'

He shook his head off, ignoring the odd anger lingering somewhere inside of him. He knew that he should at least try to understand what has happened to him inside his Unit – but right now, he was simply too tired to think – and to control himself, should any of this make him react in an odd way. After all, if Asuka saw him break down right now, this would not end up well. He pushed the thoughts aside and just stared out of the car's window.

It just felt safer.

***

Section 2 delivered them to the door of the building; as usual, it happened without much of a word except a promise that once the "incident" – as NERV insistently called the destruction of Matsushiro test facility and the takeover of Unit-03 – was cleared, they would be informed. Any further question they decided to ask was answered with various versions of "please ask your commanding officer, I am just following orders here". Asuka, of course, could not stop herself from a bitter quip of "they said that at Nuremberg, too, and look where it got them", which only reminded the Section 2 operative of why the Ikari-Soryu duty was considered the more problematic one.

Afterwards, Shinji made a quick dinner and for once, Asuka did not complain about the "Japanese people misunderstanding Western things: fast-food edition"; she just ate it slowly and without much conviction.

***

"It seems we're on our own", Shinji finally broke the silence that fell after the dinner. He did it in a tone that Asuka heard as something between sad and sarcastic. "They don't seem to worry too much about us staying on our own anymore."

"Well, maybe they finally started to treat us as adults?" she replied with a shrug, her tone somewhere between resignation and bitter amusement.

"I don't feel like an adult", he replied with a worried expression. "Do you? I guess it's about making your own decisions and–"

"Stop. Don't even try to go there", she declared abruptly with a suddenly angry face – and, after standing up, paused; when she spoke again, her tone was lower and devoid of expression except for a tinge of sadness – or at least this was what Shinji heard and immediately dismissed as almost impossible. "Thanks for the supper. I'm taking the bathroom first."

"Sure", he replied automatically and let out a sigh the moment she was behind the closed door, his head suddenly full of bitter thoughts about the best relationship of his life – and growing resignation. The thought 'I guess it was fun while it lasted' appeared first, somewhat countered by a steadfast refusal to believe that this could be the end. The following 'But what else could it be? I love her, but I don't know if I can forgive her…' was once more countered by 'if she still loves me, we can still make it work' – to which his mind replied with a simple 'if', rendering any further pondering pointless.

Shinji shook his increasingly spinning head, trying to focus on something else. There were enough chores around to distract him.

At least for now.

***

As much as Asuka would refuse to admit it, she sometimes enjoyed a moment or two alone. Being in the centre of attention was, of course, pleasant – especially if she could, at the same time, relish in her power over people – but quite often it was also tiring, not to mention annoying.

On the other hand, when she was surrounded by people – or at least in presence of some people, even as colourless as Shinji was – she was safe from her own thoughts.

And right now, being alone with her thoughts suddenly became unpleasant and filled with images of the battle – and her failure.

'I can't justify what I did' was her first thought; this confused her. 'Of course I can! I was doing what I was supposed to do! It was just the circumstances that made it impossible!' came right after. 'No, this is all wrong. I was supposed to kill an Angel, and I hesitated. I wanted to save the gorilla. I put his life first…' she realised with certain dismay. 'So, I messed up – but I did it for him" followed, bringing her mixed feelings: on one hand, she has indeed failed in combat, and this was a bitter pill to swallow; on the other, she did what she could for Shinji. 'I went against my entire training, and he better appreciate it!' she concluded.

She was aware that this was not the best conclusion she could have drawn under the circumstances – but it would have to be enough.

At least for now.

***

"I heard the phone", Asuka stated the moment she emerged from the bathroom, wrapped in towels. "Was that Misato?"

"Kaji-san", Shinji corrected with a shake of his head. "They ran her through all the scans, and she is fine", he reported with relief clear in his voice, "but they're keeping her for observation at the hospital for tonight, and… I guess he's staying with her. He told us to be 'good kids', and… well. She'll be here tomorrow", he finished with a dim smile on his face.

"Oh. Right", she replied after a momentary pause, looking away. "Okay. Goodnight, then."

"Goodnight", he replied in a subdued voice, his smile gone.

***

Asuka Langley-Soryu was feeling restless. She could not point a finger at the reason, nor could she justify it. But the increasingly annoying feeling was evident in her every move, in her every gesture, in her every thought. She tried to read – but could not focus. She tried to analyse her emotions, a semi-spiritual trick she was taught once by one of the people who trained her – but failed to even name the feeling. She tried to brush her still-wet hair way too soon, in the vain hope that it would distract her, but it betrayed her by tangling from her impatient moves. She tried to blame someone, and while her initial reflex was to blame Shinji, she had to admit – even if only to herself – that she could not do that in clear conscience. She tried to relax, her back on her bed, her eyes on the ugly ceiling – but all it accomplished was a series of frustration-filled punches to her pillow. She tried to dress for the night, but as she was putting her sleeping shirt on, she realised that she put it on backwards, tore it off, and threw it against the wall. And that only made her annoyed since it went down without making any real sound.

"Aaach, Scheiß drauf!" she finally exclaimed and stomped towards the door. She knew that she was taking a risk of making Shinji angry and having her head end up like one of Unit-03 did, a part of her mind decided that this was preferable to just lying on the bed and staring out of the window while devising creative ways of murdering him. And while she would never admit it, even to herself, she knew well that this was not something she could resolve on her own; consciously, she simply framed it as 'if I don't do something, I'll go crazy, and yelling it out at him is doing something'.

Only when her hand was ready to slide the door aside, she realised that perhaps putting at least a t-shirt and some shorts on would be a reasonable thing to do; after all, she wanted to confront the idiot, not murder him with a heart attack.

***

Shinji Ikari, unaware of the coming storm, was busying himself with doing some overdue chores – things that could have waited for a better time, things that were mundane and simple enough to keep his mind occupied and free from thoughts. He was halfway through reordering the spice box and taking notes of those that could use restocking when the door of Asuka's room opened with a force that made him happy that they did not have any immediate neighbours.

He turned towards her to kindly suggest that, despite complaints being unlikely, doing this in the late evening was not the best idea – and found himself speechless as he beheld the fury that Asuka embodied. "Listen, idiot", she started before he could even try to speak. "Spill it. I get it, you've got a problem with me. I can well guess what it is, I'm not dumb. But either you say it now, or–" she paused, unsure which of the dozen threats that she wanted to make was the right one. "Or I'm beating the ever-living shit out of you, no matter that you're my boyfriend, fellow pilot, or roommate – I don't care."

Shinji Ikari, taken aback by the suddenness of the assault, just stared at her for a few moments, mainly because his own feelings in reaction to those words confused him. Asuka's words angered him, obviously; he might have been used to her outbursts, but it did not mean it was any easier to bear them and the fact that he rarely reacted did not mean he did not feel the anger.

But that alone would not be anything strange; he would feel attacked, angry, hurt – and he would grit his teeth and let it slide. But there was something else: the lingering anger that made him beat up the Angel, hitherto kept under wraps and reasoned away as being caused by Gendo's decisions, sensed a fellow feeling – and was rising.

His breath started to speed up, his vision began turning white, and the inside of his head was starting to hum. The words started to bubble up, seemingly entirely on their own; he knew that a wrong word could cost him a lot – but at this moment, this did not seem that important anymore. "Pity Toji's just a fellow pilot, right? Perhaps if he lived with us, you'd have more issues with endangering him", he spat out.

Asuka stopped in her tracks, her eyes wide. She expected him to mention Toji, yes – but because of the way Shinji put it and the tone he said in, those words felt like a slap in her face. "This is what you think of me? That I didn't care for him?! That I thought him a stranger? That I didn't care whether he lived or died?!" she exclaimed as she shook her head. "You're really an idiot… no, you're a prince in the kingdom of idiots!"

"Do you really care?" he asked insistently as he put the small jar on the table with a little too much force, a part of his mind unwilling to abandon the task he interrupted and hoping he would remember where to resume – that was, of course, assuming that he would survive the upcoming events. "Didn't you just fight him? One wrong blow and – and you would've killed–"

"I didn't kill him, you told me yourself he's–" she interjected.

"He was lucky!" Shinji shot back. "You could've killed him! It was heartless of you! You told me it was him inside, you knew that first, but you didn't care!"

Asuka just stared at him in disbelief for a moment, her eyes growing even larger by the second, her hands balling into fists. "What the hell are you thinking?" she growled in a low tone. "What do you mean by 'didn't care'?"

"You fought as if–"

She shook her head again. "I tried. I held back. I messed this all up exactly because I was fighting to disable the bastard, not to hurt him!" she almost yelled, gesturing as if she tried to indicate the battlefield. "And that's my reward? You, telling me I should've – what?! – lie down and let it walk over me?"

"It did", Shinji blurted out – and immediately regretted it, regardless of his anger; this was a low blow, by any standards – and by his own, this was almost unthinkable.

Asuka's eyes grew even wider in surprise – and then narrowed in anger; any feelings of guilt and any will to reconcile were evaporating quickly; she seemed to have missed his expression of regret. "You're a fucking ingrate", she hissed in a way that would make him stake a step back if he was not already against the kitchen tabletop. While he heard Asuka curse before, it was rarely so explicit that she had to revert to English for some words to do it right. "I was trying to save you, idiot! And him, too!"

"I didn't need saving! Maybe–"

"Bullshit", she sneered. "I heard you talking. You didn't even try to resist! You just refused to fight! It was a small miracle you're still alive! This is not the regular enemy you can negotiate with!" she rattled out far too quickly for Shinji to interject. "What good would refusing do?! You'd be dead! I'd be alone! And Toji would be dead, too, because they'd just nuke the Angel! Just as they did your first and that damned splitting one!"

Shinji did not reply; he seemed dumbfounded but the whole tirade.

"It wouldn't kill you to use your brain, once in a while" she picked up again, her voice now lower but her gaze still full of anger. "We're soldiers, we make the hard choices. Good that I was there to do it for you, right?"

Shinji's jaw clenched; his thoughts were now stampeding, bereft of any control. He knew it would be better if he stood down, turned away, perhaps even try to run; after all, Asuka, as the recent events have proven once more, was not prone to surrender or even take a step back. But Asuka's current attitude was not helping, he was angry – and he did not have any time left to think. "You failed", he blurted out.

Asuka's jaw dropped, her stare turning into one of disbelief.

"You know what?" she started in a suddenly low voice, cold as the ball her insides tangled into. "Fuck you. I tried to save you. I tried to save you, and to satisfy your absurd demands, both. Fuck that. It's your fault I failed; I should've ripped that thing apart, danger to Toji or not", she said as she was doing her best not to show how hurt she felt right now; still, her eyes were saying that well enough; she only hoped she would not start crying here and now. "You're on your own now, Shinji-dear. I'll have your back, don't you ever doubt that, but I'm not taking your advice or suggestions. Goodnight… and I hope you're happy now", she said in almost a flat tone as she headed towards the door and started to pull her shoes on.

"Wh-where are you going?" he asked in a confused voice.

"Do you really care? Don't try to follow me, and don't you dare send any of those goons after me", she replied in a tone that would accept no objection – and a moment later, she was gone.

Shinji was left standing there, unsure of what to think or what to do.

After a few long moments of staring into nothingness, he turned back to the kitchen tabletop and mechanically picked up the spice jar left there.

A vacant mind was better than a troubled one, after all.

***

Asuka, despite her emotional state, retained enough instincts and reason to stay away from the streets at night. She headed towards the rooftop instead, remembering from her initial look around the building that it was barely locked; back in that time, she thought scouting in such detail was paranoid – and now she was glad she did it.

The cool air of the evening, the hard cold ground she was sitting on, and the rough wall behind her back calmed her down a bit, but it would take much more for her to get rid of all of the anger, pain, and disappointment she accumulated in those few short minutes. 'Why. Why did you have to be such an idiot?! Why can't you see the things for what they are?' was the major thought in her head.

Other thoughts tried to reach her conscious mind: a suggestion that she was not blameless; a thought that he might be worrying about her right now; a whisper that he might be right on some points.

She pushed them all away. Right now, she felt hurt. Hurt by his words, hurt by his attitude, hurt by him. She admitted to herself that it was her who started the confrontation – but it was not her who threw the first punch.

And now she was here, alone. She refused to call it a defeat, but this was, by any measure, not a victory.

Tears formed in her eyes; she did not want to cry at all, and least of all, because of him – but this was not something she could stop, being just as exhausted emotionally as she was physically. And so, she had to let them flow.

Only when there were no tears left in her, she whispered hoarsely: "God above… if this is some test, then I'm warning you, I'm not going to take it lying down on a pile of crap, arguing with you. I hate this, and if this is your doing, I'm going to hate you, and believe me, neither of us wants that. So… if you did this, you better fix it, or it'll get ugly and you won't get another nice didactic Bible book out of it. And if it's not your doing… well, never mind then. I'll handle it. Somehow, I guess", she sighed. "Amen."

This has brought her some semblance of stability – but it was far from enough.

She returned home late into the night; aside from needing to pull herself together, a part of her did not want to confront Shinji on the way back. Fortunately for her, she did not have to – once she managed to get home, the apartment was dark.

And once more, she refused to admit that she was quite relieved seeing that Shinji's shoes were still there.

And here we are. Thank you for your patience. The next chapter should be up sometime early February.

What happened, son? – chapter 6.

WHS, chapter 6. – "All wrong"

Major Misato Katsuragi returned to her apartment as soon as she was allowed to by the medical personnel. She entered the apartment with an overwhelming urge to shower at her own place instead of hospital facilities and eat something decent before going back to work – NERV never cared much about medical leave except the bare necessities, after all – but she could not help to be confused by how quiet this place now was.

She was, of course, as always, greeted by Shinji and asked in detail about her condition. Once she had reassured him that she was fine, her visible injuries notwithstanding, she was fed proper breakfast and questioned about Toji – to which she was happy to report that he was fine as well, just as the initial report indicated; "bruised no worse than after last year sports' competitions", she relayed based on his medical record, "but this time, at least nothing is broken" and "once we are sure it is safe, we will wake him up".

But any attempts to pierce the veil of silence that followed from their side, be it by riling up Asuka – who seemed to be quite under the weather – or asking Shinji – who seemed to be downright morose aside from his short moment of happiness in response to the good news – were unsuccessful. They replied with the usual "fine" and "no problems at school"; Misato had no reason to mistrust them on that – after all, their grades have improved significantly over the last few weeks – but it felt incomplete as if there was some invisible animal in the room – felt, but unseen.

'I didn't even leave them for that long! What could've happened?' she mused in exasperation, eyeing both of her charges for any clues – but to no avail. 'Teens… I get it, they don't have it easy here, but if I managed to get through my teenage years unscathed, they shouldn't have any problems, not with me to talk to! On the other hand, they had a somewhat worse start… oh well', she finally shrugged, 'they can always turn to me. I just hope this won't affect their synch rates. Or everyone will be in trouble…'

And with that conclusion, she carried on with her day. After all, there was not much else she could do about the two – and plenty of things she had to do at NERV.

***

Later that day

"Hey, Hikari, you got some time after school? I'm in a mood for some time spent with someone reasonable", Asuka asked loud enough for half the class to hear – after making sure that Shinji would be in that half.

"We should be studying for the Maths test, Asuka-san", Hikari replied in a much lower voice. It was pretty obvious that this request had made her uncomfortable – not just because behaving like regular teens felt somehow inappropriate now, in the face of one of their own being in the hospital. She was, plain and simple, worried about Suzuhara: the class was told that he had "an accident" but "suffered no serious injuries" and "was going to be fine". But since they were not letting anyone visit him yet, she still suspected the worst.

And what she saw happening in class was also not helping her mood, either. She knew she was perhaps not the best judge of emotions and – as Asuka would be quick to point out – it was none of her business, but she was empathetic enough to notice that the interactions between Asuka and her flatmate have changed drastically. Over the last few weeks, their behaviour towards each other has somewhat become more civil: while they were clearly not friends yet, they were far less hostile when interacting – and Hikari was happy to see that Asuka was finally learning to behave properly.

But now, all that was lost, and any hope for normalcy returning to the classroom was gone with it. Asuka has effectively reverted to the boisterous, aggressive, and disdainful ways she seemed to be slowly shedding over that time, her words now once more used as weapons – weapons directed at Shinji primarily and at anyone who dared bother her secondarily.

And Shinji… well, he looked even worse; in the beginning, when Asuka arrived, he seemed subdued, and Hikari did not blame him: after all, Asuka was difficult to handle even for someone as experienced as she was, and Shinji was anything but experienced, and definitely did not know how to treat a girl right. The fact that Asuka had some… unwelcome habits from her time in Germany and clearly lacked some social mores was just adding to the problem. But then, things started to mellow out – and work quite well.

Until now. Now, he looked borderline depressed, as impossible as it could have sounded when discussing a teenager in his position: he was barely responsive, limited his activity to answering teachers' questions, and his interactions with other classmates were virtually limited to Aida. 'I understand, Suzuhara is his closest friend, and it had to hit him harder that the rest of the class. But this can't be just that! Is Asuka's mean streak getting to him again? Or maybe he just did something stupid to her again? She might not care much about how to behave, but he doesn't know anything about girls… and they still live under one roof! I am far from questioning the decisions of their commanders, I am sure they have important reasons… but this is just wrong!' she kept musing as she watched Aida doing his best to cheer Shinji up – and failing.

"Hey, Hikari, you there?" Asuka's voice sounded just next to her again.

"Um… yes?" Hikari snapped back. "I told you, we should be studying for the test", she replied quickly.

"And I told you this test is both dumb and easy, haven't you been listening?" Asuka asked in an annoyed tone, her face almost a pout. "I'll explain everything to you, no worries!"

Hikari let out a heavy sigh; she saw being friends with Asuka as part of her duties, and she had to admit that it was not so bad most of the time. The girl was smart, outgoing, and trustworthy – and she surely brought some liveliness into Hikari's life; even if she had a little less time to spend together recently, it was still fine. But sometimes, just sometimes – Asuka happened to act like this… and unwittingly reminded Hikari that this friendship came in with a price tag attached, a part of that price being Asuka not understanding the concepts of compromise and other people have their needs too.

"All right", she finally agreed, reluctance obvious in her voice. "But I have to be home by seven. There's a lot to–"

"Sure thing", Asuka's expression turned into a happy grin. "Thanks, and don't worry!"

Hikari kept her comment about Asuka's approach to things to herself – and took a quick look at Shinji. 'I hope this is not some weird way of making him miserable…'

***

"Shinji", Kensuke finally spoke after a few minutes of walking in silence. "What really happened?"

"What?" Shinji shook his head. "What do you mean?"

"What happened to Toji? That's just too many coincidences! First, he's in thought all the time – him, in thought, imagine that! – then he vanishes, and then he's had an accident right when another Evangelion arrived and the great battle happened!" he listed. "He was piloting it, wasn't he?"

Shinji took a deep breath, calming the anger that started to rise in his chest; he knew that this was supposed to be a secret – but so was his status as a pilot, so was – in theory – his whole involvement in the NERV business, and, really, so was the entire purpose of NERV. 'If NERV is so bad at keeping its secrets, why should I care? What they're going to do, shoot me?' he growled internally before speaking up with a nod. "Yes. He's a pilot now. And… and it didn't go too well."

"But they said he was fine!" Kensuke's tone was clearly fearful.

"He is", Shinji confirmed, averting his gaze. "He got lucky."

"Did he defeat the Angel?" Kensuke's tone was now relieved, and his curiosity now peaked. It was the first time Shinji was actually willing to share that much information, and he was not going to waste that opportunity.

Shinji stopped for a moment, unsure how to answer. He did not want to lie – but telling Kensuke the truth would make him only hate Shinji – and he was the only person that was still talking to him. Well, perhaps except for Misato and Kaji, but those were adults and could hardly be counted as friends. And Toji… Toji had every reason to hate him right now; Shinji fully expected to be beaten up again once Toji was on his feet. "The Angel was defeated", he finally replied. "And he had his hand in it", he added, trying his best to stay technically correct – and his stomach suddenly twisted as he remembered who taught him that approach. He heard that Kensuke was saying something, perhaps even asking questions – but he did not listen.

The image of the girl he had lost was just too present in his mind.

***

Hikari was following a confusingly cheerful Asuka; she was, after all, always willing to accommodate and assist, even if her own mind was full of personal problems – and full it was indeed. 'They're not letting anyone see him. They told me "they'll consider making an exception once he's able to take visitors"… I just want to watch over him! Is it so hard to–'

"Hikari, come here!" Asuka motioned towards a dress in yet another shop's display. "Check this out!"

She let out a sigh and obliged her once more. She knew that in the end, Asuka was not a bad person – just a very insensitive one and that this was a flaw that was very difficult to grow out of; she has been giving her the benefit of a doubt for a while, and she knew that it would have to continue like this for a while longer – especially that Asuka had moments when she was, actually, a pretty good friend.

Hikari even tried to raise the subject of Suzuhara – and Asuka was supportive, actively reassuring her that he was in a NERV hospital, under literally the best possible care that was possible in the world, and she had nothing to worry about. "Listen, I shouldn't be telling you this… but those things they put us into, the Entry Plugs, those things are practically indestructible. And believe me, the idiot took the possible best care of the go– of Suzuhara during that latest m– sortie", she added with a suddenly changed, difficult-to-decipher look on her face. "And once he's back on his feet, you'll get your hands on him in no time!"

It was not the kind of support Hikari wished for, but she had to admit it did raise her spirits a bit. She was also not sure whether Asuka was aware of how many NERV secrets she just slipped in those few sentences – but, luckily for the redhead, Hikari could keep a secret. Especially for a friend. And so, thankful for this odd but still helpful moment, she smiled and kept maintaining her I am fine face – until the time came, and she politely but insistently said that she needed to go and followed on that despite Asuka's protests.

What she failed to see was Asuka's real state of mind.

'Shit. Even the whole afternoon didn't help', the redhead growled internally soon after she parted ways with Hikari and was left alone – or, more precisely, alone with her thoughts. 'What good are people, if they can't help me fix that stupid mood?!'

"Hey, what's a cutie like you doing alone? Someone stood you up?" interrupted her thoughts – and soon enough, she took full advantage of having a viable and legitimate target for her anger. She quietly admitted to herself that delivering a full dressing-down to a relatively innocent boy who just wanted to chat her up was a bit too much – but she quickly reasoned it away as "he talked to me, this means he is now a combatant, not an unarmed civilian" and smiled triumphantly as they boy retreated – no, almost ran away – after the series of comments and remarks about his laughable appearance, questionable attitude, and mediocre chances to pick anyone with working eyes and half a brain up.

Of course, that triumph lasted just for a moment and brought little relief.

The image of the boy she had lost was just too present in her mind.

***

It was already getting dark when Asuka returned to the apartment. She was immediately greeted by the familiar smell of Shinji's cooking – and while it would usually make her stomach rumble, right now, it made her stomach twist.

"Good evening, Asuka", Shinji greeted her carefully. "Dinner will be ready in about fifteen minutes."

"Geez, maybe you'll stick some suffix to my name, too", she scoffed as she made her way to her room. "Is 'hello' too informal for you now?"

He gave her a look that could be seen as either tired or annoyed. "At least I say something when I enter."

"Oh, forgive me for not being a prim and proper lady", she retorted with a twitch on her face. "Good evening, Ikari-sama", she said in a sickeningly sweet tone and curtsied clumsily. "Will you grace me with your attention?"

Shinji let out a heavy sigh, shook his head, and turned back to the stove without a further word. Asuka, suddenly unpleasantly aware that this did not go exactly her way and her ears were suddenly burning, retreated to her room. 'I am going to murder him if this goes on' was a fleeting thought that appeared in her mind.

She dismissed it as quickly as it appeared, though.

After all, it would be dumb to kill the single person in this household that could actually cook.

***

Asuka was saved from the risk of engaging in yet another exchange with Shinji by Misato's timely arrival – and a sudden cloud of seriousness and worry that arrival let into the apartment, only reinforced by her words that came just after the greeting. "Guys, I've got bad news", she announced with a tired voice before she even sat at the table. "Doctor Akagi… well, she's not going to be working for a while."

"What happened?" Shinji asked immediately. "Is she all right?"

"She's… not", Misato admitted after a moment of hesitation. "Not really. They let her return to work sooner than they let me, on her insistence, I believe… and this has proven to be too much for her", she explained, proud of herself on how true that statement was despite omitting several crucial details. "She is under good care now, and Sciences is now run by Lieutenant Ibuki, so you'll be seeing her a bit more often."

"You didn't tell us what happened", Asuka pointed out. "'Proven too much', what, she had a heart attack at the ripe age of… what, thirty-five?"

"Thirty", Misato corrected automatically with an insistence that made Asuka smirk. "We don't know yet", she continued, this time being quite truthful. "She was unconscious and received medical attention immediately, but the Commander demanded that the reports be delivered to him directly… which, of course, is his right, since he is her direct superior."

"Well, no stupid tests for a while, I guess", Asuka shrugged with disdain, eliciting a stern look from Misato – and to everyone's surprise, from Shinji as well.

"They're not stupid, Asuka", he objected. "They're tedious, sure, but aren't they needed to keep the Evangelions running right?"

"And since when are you defending her torture methods?" Asuka scoffed. "Oh, wait, I know! You must be a masochist, how else could you enjoy going through them?" she smirked.

"Well, yes, I must be, since I still live under this roof, even though you are still here", he replied with an amount of venom in his voice that made Misato's eyes go wide. "Here you are, Misato-san", he added immediately in his usual soft voice as he put the bowl before the woman stunned by the sudden contrast in his tone. "Do you want a beer with that?"

"I-I'll get one myself, thank you, Shin-chan", Misato replied, shaking her head in confusion.

"Not just a masochist, but also an idiot", Asuka remarked. "If I bother you so much, why don't you move out? I'm sure your daddy would find you a nice, cosy place at the Headquarters."

"I was here first, you know", he countered with a hint of annoyance. "First of us two, that is. If anyone was to move out, that would be–"

"Would you two please stop it?" Misato erupted as she slammed the unopened can on the table – and immediately sighed, returned it to the fridge, and got herself a new one. "It was a bad day, my friend is in the hospital, and you're not making it any better!"

"Well, at least you know what is going on with your friend", Asuka countered. "We just have to trust that our friend is 'fine', and nobody's allowed to visit, not me, not the idiot, not the Class Rep."

Shinji gave her a strange and confused look but said nothing; he just quietly put the bowl of food in front of her and went to fill his own.

"No, Asuka", Misato spoke in a surprisingly low voice. "I don't know. They won't let me visit her, either. I told you, the Commander effectively isolated the doctor. And they will let you see Suzuhara the moment he wakes up and the doctors will be able to tell there is no brain damage or contamination. It might very well be tomorrow because this is when they'll try to pull him out of the medication-induced coma."

"And you were going to tell us that… when?" she asked, her tone somewhat more subdued.

"Right after the news about Doctor Akagi. I thought those more important, you know?" Misato's tone turned almost scolding.

"All right, all right", Asuka rolled her eyes. "Just don't keep us waiting. Hikari's already going nuts."

"Hikari?" Shinji furrowed his brow.

"You're just like Suzuhara, you know?" Asuka shot back. "Blind and dumb. No wonder you two get along so well."

Shinji gave her a heavy look and instead of replying, dug into his food.

Misato let out a quiet sigh and downed half a can in a few gulps. It seemed that the atmosphere at home was not going to be helpful. 'Ritsuko… you always had a shitty sense of timing, that was clear since that time you walked on me and Kaji in the middle of… well. But this, this was bad even by your standards', she mused with a mix of annoyance and dark humour, the variety that seemed to be overtaking her sense of humour recently and quickly heading towards the gallows variety. 'And I'd love to know what the fuck is going with those two… before I have to lock them up in a cell together to force them to make up!'

***

A few days later at NERV HQ

Shinji was breathing regularly – or, more precisely, forcing himself to breathe regularly; the odd feeling of LCL was not making it easy. He was told that the liquid was supposed to be non-invasive, almost imperceptible – but he was still unpleasantly aware that it was not air that was going to his lungs. 'At least I am no longer retching when I get it out…' he mused, thankful for this small blessing.

Of course, it was not the LCL's presence that was the real problem here: it was being alone with his thoughts that were a serious obstacle to his attempts to do at least decent on the synch test. Regretfully, as much as he wished to do that, he could not just turn them off. Focusing on his breathing definitely helped, but it was only a half-measure; thinking of school was a temporary relief… except for the fact that it brought his thoughts, without fail, back on track that was going towards either Asuka or Toji. As a result, 'I am hopeless' was the only conclusion he could reach, no matter how many times he tried to prove himself otherwise.

"Rei, you're done", Major Katsuragi's voice sounded in the comms. "You can go. Asuka, Shinji, we're going to run another round of tests."

***

Initially, Asuka was simply annoyed by yet another test; she was, after all, counting that the temporary unavailability of Doctor Akagi would at least put a pause on that part of their life as pilots, a part she did not really care for. Soon after, her mood went to increasingly vexed by being kept inside the simulation bodies for longer than usual without as much as a word of explanation. And now, the Major's words have upgraded that state to angry. "Seriously?! It's been four hours already! Why don't you let us at least play some music here?" she burst out.

"It would affect the results, and you know that all too well, Asuka", Major Katsuragi's voice came in, echoing oddly. "Your rates dropped, and we need to find out why. So, you two stay put and do your part."

Asuka growled quietly in response – and louder when Rei Ayanami, the perfect and impeccable Wondergirl, departed with a quiet, emotionless "goodbye". As her anger was still rising, she turned her attention to the only viable target.

"Hey, idiot, I bet you're happy", she started. "Tell me, how do you like to be kept here for twice as long? I know, I know", she continued as he did not react, "you're a good boy who likes to follow–"

"Asuka, stop it!" Misato demanded. "Be quiet and focus, both of you! I mean: Asuka, be quiet, and both of you focus! Lieutenant, start the test sequence… now."

***

Shinji knew the drill well: calm your mind, focus on something, and let the thoughts flow freely – or, at best, not at all. The problem was that at the moment, those requirements were somewhat contradictory – so he had to choose the best options. Taking another deep breath, he focused on the display in front of him, one that replaced Rei's image. It was showing some flowing data, likely a diagnostic feed; the content did not matter to him, but the regularity of flow did. It was a simple trick, almost stupid in its simplicity – but it worked: he was slowly regaining the steadiness of his thought, as confirmed by a few words of approval from the monitoring station –and even Asuka's visage in the window next to the feed was not taking his mind off it.

Suddenly, his concentration shattered into pieces: he felt like someone embraced him and refused to let go even if his body was telling him it was impossible; his head started spinning, and when he refocused, it was not on the feed, but on Asuka's face. 'I miss her touch' was the thought that hit him, along with a flood of emotions, both warm and sad.

"Shinji, your harmonics are all over the spectrum, what is happening?" Major Katsuragi's loud voice sounded in his comms. "Please focus, you're disrupting the test!"

"I'm trying, Misato-san", he managed to say as he shook his head. "I… I think I'm just tired, it's hard to keep the mind on one track for so long."

"We can try the word association tests, ma'am", Lieutenant Ibuki suggested.

"All right", the Major agreed. "Shinji, please reply to every word without–"

"Misato-san, I know how this is done", Shinji interrupted, his tone borderline annoyed. "It's not my first time. Please start", he requested tiredly.

"All right", Lieutenant Ibuki confirmed. "Let's start. Child?"

"Mother."

"Green?"

"Grass."

"Red?"

'Longing' was the word that flared up in Shinji's mind – but he managed not to say it; instead, he made a second-long pause, insignificant to anyone but a very perceptive therapist – and none was to be found here. "Blood."

"Blue?"

"Hair."

"Geometry?"

"Hard."

As the Lieutenant kept going, he kept responding, his focus now fully on the exercise; he did not even notice when the odd sensation of touch vanished, replaced by the emptiness he was so used to.

***

Asuka, previously just angry and not above expressing it, was now positively fuming with anger. Not only was she left without any attention, but she was also told to be quiet and to wait her turn. Any of those would mess up her day – but delivered all together and put atop of her already-angry disposition were enough to put her in a mood that could easily be described as murderous. Of course, she knew better than to interrupt someone's else exercise – if she did, they would start anew, and they would be here even longer – but this did not mean that she was going to be nice. She listened in to his association test, giving replies in her own mind and smiling when she managed a joke. 'Well, the "Third – turd" joke never gets old', she smirked for a short moment before a feeling of loss she did not want to associate with him made her angry again, angry enough to contemplate hitting him–

She had no time to dwell on that feeling, though – a sudden presence registered in her mind without any warning, just as if something else entered the test body and made itself at home. 'Was zur Hölle?!' came to her mind as indistinct whispers followed.

That was just too much weird for her at once, and so she reacted in the only way she knew – by grabbing all her anger and focusing it against the intrusion, picturing a conflagration that mercilessly incinerated everything in its path. This was how she always fought the "wrong" sensation that sometimes happened when she entered Unit-02, and this was how she resisted the pressure her Unit exerted on her. 'Fahr zur Hölle, Arschloch! Brenn! Brenn! Brenn!'

A searing sensation pierced her mind – and the presence seemed to have lessened significantly. It was then she realised that she was not exactly quiet on the outside. "What the–"

"Asuka, your readings just went crazy, what is going on?" Major Katsuragi's voice sounded, her tone worried.

"Nothing", she replied in a barking tone, angry at herself for losing control like that. "Nothing you should be worried about, Misato", she corrected herself, her voice still angry; this was as far as she could cover the lingering fury. "It's just… hard to focus here", she added, contempt obvious in her tone. 'And as long as you keep putting us in those shit quality bodies that keep frying my brain and making me hear voices, this will keep happening! I wonder what that was… Are people just thinking too loudly around here? Or just some ghost that wandered in?'

"We'll get to you the moment we're done with Shinji", the Major's promise interrupted Asuka's musings just when she was about to chastise herself for superstitious thinking, unbecoming a rational, scientific mind. "Just… be patient for a moment, okay?"

"Yeah, sure", Asuka's reply was laden with disdain; she almost punched the console, disabling the connection on her side. "Of course they took care of him first. Of course. Well, he can kiss my ass…! if he ever deserves that privilege", she scoffed to herself and took a deep breath, her anger quieter now – but threatening to erupt again, as Shinji's face was still in the field of vision. 'Idiot!' was the most coherent statement she could formulate about him as she sulked in silence, once more alone with her thoughts.

Lost in her thoughts, she failed to notice when the presence she singed vanished entirely.

***

About an hour and a half later

"Shinji, Asuka, report to my office once you're ready" sounded in the locker room, making Asuka turn her head as she was buttoning her uniform up.

"Seriously?" she grumbled. "This day is getting better and better…" she shook her head.

A few minutes and an elevator ride later, thanking any higher powers that watched over her that she did not have to share the cabin with Shinji, she rang at the door with the "Director of Tactical Operations" label.

"Come in" came in Katsuragi's voice and Asuka entered, her mood immediately worsened by the fact that he was already there. "Good. Now that I have you both here… let's go."

"Where to?" Asuka raised an eyebrow. "Have the gallows been set up already?"

The Major gave her a tired look in response. "NERV doesn't hang people. Haven't you read the Ops Manual? If an execution is called for, we're doing it military style: a bullet to the head", she replied without as much as a hint of whether she was joking or not. "We need to talk, and for that, we need a more suitable place, my office is too small. Follow me, and enjoy the tour", she added with just a hint of annoyance in her tone.

Asuka gave Shinji a confused glance behind Katsuragi's back – but he shrugged it off with an equally confused expression mixed with annoyance as he turned to follow the Major. 'Useful as always', Asuka grumbled to herself, rolled her eyes, and followed her as well. 'What is this about? "We need to talk" never bodes well. At least it's not "you're going back to Germany right now"… at least I hope it's not', she mused with a suddenly heavy heart. 'I'd hate to be taken away from–'

She terminated the thought with extreme prejudice the moment she realised whom she was thinking about.

'Get a grip, Soryu!'

And so the life goes on, and a confrontation approaches. Expect the next chapter sometime in March.

What happened, son? – chapter 7.

WHS?, Chapter 7. – "I'll kill you"

"Hey, Misato, where are we going?" Asuka asked after spending several minutes crisscrossing a veritable maze of corridors in a part of NERV HQ she did not recall having ever visited. Not that the corridors were much different here – after all, the entire HQ was one huge maze where you could get lost not only of complexity but also because everything looked the same – but the markings on the walls and the amount of warning signs were telling her that even her pilot-grade access card would not let her access many doors here.

"Here", Major Katsuragi replied curtly after a few seconds – and before Asuka could press on for more information, slid her ID card through the door control. The lock indicator changed from red to green and the door slid open with a heavy hiss; it did not escape Asuka's attention that they were heavy and multi-layered, more befitting a bunker than a regular room that high in the NERV pyramid. That was the last thing she noticed, though, before the content of the room made her stop in her tracks.

The interior looked like it was made as a single plastic box with no seams; the door, a small panel next to it, and two small ventilation fixtures close to the ceiling were the only discontinuities in the entire structure. The dim white lighting was delivered from behind the milky walls, and the entire furniture – eight chairs and a table – was made of fully transparent plastic. She dimly recalled a description of such a place from–

"What is this place?" Shinji asked, breaking Asuka's train of thought and adding another pebble to the heap of her annoyances. "It looks like straight from a spaceship."

"Well, I guess sending you to Mars would solve some of the problems", Misato quipped bitterly. "Certainly, it would solve the problem of your scores. But no, this is–"

"It's a secure conference room!" Asuka snapped her fingers, her annoyance forgotten for a moment; the memory of the book she once read appeared in her mind and she could once more show her undisputed superiority. "They used those in intelligence stations, in embassies, when the highest secrecy was needed!"

"Correct", Misato confirmed with a nod, motioned them to get inside, and pressed a button on the panel, making the door slide close. She followed with two others – and a barely perceptible soft hum emanating from the walls filled the room. "This is an almost-perfect Faraday cage, plus the vibrations shield it from any attempts at listening in. Sit down."

"Why did you bring us here?" Shinji asked as he obliged her.

"Well, I guess no one will hear us scream inside when she murders us, and it's easy to mop up the blood from the plastic floor", Asuka quipped as she followed his example, doing her best to mask her nervousness – with the side effect of her jokes becoming a bit more morbid than usual.

Misato's palm met her face in response. "Asuka, could you please be serious? At least for a moment?"

Asuka shrugged with an annoyed expression. "All right, all right. No murder jokes. But if it's not murder we're here for, the idiot's question stands: why are we here?"

"I told you, we need to talk", Misato, still standing over them and leaning against one of the chairs, let out a sigh and rubbed the bridge of her nose. "Okay, there's no good way of saying it, so, I'll be straight: you two have to make up. I'll do anything, within reason that is, to help", she demanded, her tone suddenly serious.

"Oh", Asuka chuckled, surprise obvious on her face. "Can I get a shooting silhouette with the idiot?" she pointed her thumb at Shinji.

"Maybe?" Misato semi-agreed, the pained expression not leaving her face. "If it's really necessary?"

"Can I get one with my father?" Shinji asked in turn as he raised his hand, his expression deadpan.

"No!" Misato shook her head. "Nobody's going to authorise something like that!"

"Not fair", Shinji said in a most disappointed tone and gave her an almost hurt look. Something in Misato's mind was telling her that all she was missing in his copy of Asuka's behaviour was a pout.

"For once I agree with the idiot, that's not fair", Asuka nodded solemnly, her hands crossed in front of her chest, her eyes closed.

Misato just glared at the two, her mind frantically calculating whether the additional money was worth the trouble. Her mind quickly corrected it to 'whether additional money, getting regular meals, having a clean apartment, no longer returning to a completely empty house, and living a semblance of family life were worth the trouble' – and replied with a quick and decisive 'yes'. And so, she shook the question off as closed and unproductive – and focused on the task at hand – namely, forcing the two teens to quit their… argument? Fight? Vendetta? War? Prelude to Armageddon?

Well, whatever it was, it was certainly making her day much harder than it already was.

"Guys, seriously", she started again with a heavy sigh. "This is getting ridiculous. I get it, you don't have to love each other. I don't expect miracles. But would you at least stop hating each other? It's playing havoc with your work! And mine! And this world's survival, too!"

"I don't hate him, Misato", Asuka shrugged, shooting a sideways look towards the boy. "I just think he's a total, complete, and utter idiot who doesn't have his priorities straight."

"And I don't hate her", Shinji shrugged, his expression ideally mirroring the one Asuka made. "I just think she forgot her heart in Germany, having left it in a castle made of ice."

"Nice reference, idiot", Asuka said, her tone a mix of appreciation and hostility. "Had to take you a while to think that out, right?"

"Thanks, I thought you might appreciate a truthful but poetic description", he replied off-handedly. "And not really, I just read the books you told me to."

Misato's palm met her face once more, this time with a loud sound. "For the love of all that is holy, at least try to act civilised!"

"Misato-san, this was quite civilised", Shinji remarked with a surprising deadpan in his voice; for some reason he could not entirely fathom, he was feeling quite confident. "We're just having a… difference of opinion."

"Exactly", Asuka agreed; she tried not to think how much she relied on Shinji allying with her against Misato right now – but it was clear to her that right now, it was them vs. Misato. "Intense one, but that's that. I didn't smack him even once and he didn't burn my food at any point. Not to mention, I am not plotting to eviscerate him, and, as far as I know, he's not planning to poison me."

"I can confirm, I am not planning that", Shinji confirmed with a solemn nod, mirroring Asuka's recent gesture.

"Thank you", Asuka replied in a cold but measured voice; Shinji was almost sure there was a hint of a smile in there – but he was far from betting his life on that.

Misato closed her eyes; she took a deep breath and released it. It failed to provide any relief, so she repeated that exercise several times, and finally opened her eyes again. Her nightmare, in the form of two impudent Pilots, was still in front of her, still facing her with a unity that was in direct contradiction to the hostility towards each other – hostility they were still openly expressing.

"I'm being serious here, and this whole matter is serious", she tried again and raised her hand before any of them could let out another quippy remark. "So, would you please listen to me, for once? I know you are angry with each other, so much would be obvious even to someone completely blind. I can guess why, and, frankly, you're both somewhat right", she raised her hand again, seeing that they both opened their mouths. "Listen first. But you're also both wrong, and in the end, it doesn't matter! If you don't work together, if you don't clear it up somehow, and if your sync rates don't stop dropping, your next fight might be your last. And this bodes poorly for humanity!"

"No pressure, eh?" Asuka scoffed; Shinji did not speak, but his expression soured.

"None. At. All", Misato replied in a mock sweet tone before returning to her usual serious business tone. "Listen. In a moment, I'm out of this room, and I'm leaving you here. It's completely safe from any monitoring, and once you turn this on", she pointed to the switches on the wall, "you'll reenable the sound jammers and other countermeasures. Nobody – not me, not even the Commander – nobody will be able to listen to what you say here. I shouldn't be doing this, since this room is for special purposes only… but if this is the only way to make you talk to each other and maybe resolve the issues, it is special enough in my book. Either you leave this room agreeing to at least work together, or…"

"Or what, Misato?" Asuka scoffed again. "You'll fire us?"

"Or the Commander will take this out of my hands and order someone else to find a solution", Misato corrected without losing a beat, her expression tight and determined. "He already expressed his worries about the lowering scores, and with Doctor Akagi absent, there aren't many hands with appropriate clearance… and so, it could be him that is going to be taking a look at this. And–"

"And with his performance on the last Angel battle, we don't want him to do anything near us or even involving us", Shinji finished for her, his voice bitter.

Asuka gave him a confused look, unsure whether it was a crude joke, a sincere concern, or a mix of the two; she made a mental note to ask later, once this was somewhat resolved – since now there was no doubt Misato was serious.

"Pretty much, but I wouldn't voice such opinions outside of this room if I were you", Misato replied.

"Don't worry, Misato-san. I get called idiot a lot but I'm sure Asuka means it affectionately, not as a fact", Shinji shrugged.

"I do mean it–" Asuka started but paused when Misato raised her hand yet again, a deeply pained expression on her face.

"Reactivate the jammers once I'm out. Once you're done, deactivate them and open the door with this", she indicated another button. "Remember the order, since the door won't open with active jammers, there is no user manual, and one of those buttons activates the sterilisation protocol", she explained, once more making them unsure whether she was joking or not. "And I expect results, or that bad scenario will happen sooner than later. If I'm not around to take you back, call me on the intercom; it's the only thing that'll accept your IDs here", she declared and pressed the button; the persistent hum of the machines ceased within seconds. "Good luck."

***

A few seconds after the door closed behind her, Asuka and Shinji took a long look at each other and their hands collided over the control panel. A few annoying moments later, they managed to activate the machinery – and ensure their privacy.

"What now?" Shinji asked as Asuka once more dropped onto one of the transparent chairs.

"Now we elect the Pope", Asuka replied with a shrug and in an annoyed tone. "Since we didn't get any food or water, we better be swift about that."

Shinji gave her a tired look – but could not hide a small smile. "I thought that's done in Rome."

"Times change", Asuka shrugged. "But since we can't make any smoke, let alone white one–"

"Asuka…" Shinji's look turned almost pleading.

"What do you think?!" Asuka burst out. "Now we die of hunger and dehydration, because I see no damned way we can work this one out. Or even see eye-to-eye on this", she continued in a bitter voice as she turned to look to the side and shrugged. "Unless one of us gives in. Obviously, it can't be me, and I gave you a proper spine insertion surgery not too long ago, so it's not going to be you either. So, we're doomed."

"I'd rather not watch you die, Asuka", Shinji replied, his deadpan still present.

"You'd go first. I've got more fat tissue to hold to", she shrugged, shooting a short glare down her own body. "Also, I'm more likely to kill you so I can eat you, so…"

"You never know what strength someone can have facing death", Shinji retorted, a small smirk appearing in the corner of his eye. "I could muster the level of puppy eyes that would stop you dead in your tracks."

Asuka did her best to stifle a giggle and maintain the hostile demeanour; it worked only partially. "Okay, you might be right. On that account only!" she corrected quickly. "And no amount of jokes is going to cover your–"

"I'm not covering anything, Asuka", Shinji shook his head, his voice suddenly serious again. "And I really don't want to watch you die… here, or in battle, when we get worse at piloting. Misato-san is right, the scores are worsening."

"Oh, come on, those are just numbers!" Asuka scoffed. "Meaningless numbers!"

"Asuka…" Shinji let out a sigh, "they're not meaningless. You… didn't you get really annoyed when I had a better score than you did that one time?"

Asuka shot him a death glare and crossed her hands on her chest again. "Don't change the subject."

"They're not meaningless", he repeated. "And… Misato-san is right. We… well. We have a problem."

"You have a problem, idiot", Asuka retorted. "I can fix that score. I can do better next time."

"You didn't so far, right? And you knew it was dropping before today" Shinji countered. "And…" he hesitated for a moment as if he was looking for the right word, "the Commander… we don't want him on this. He may send you back, or…" he paused, his expression suddenly almost haunted. "I think he could even just let you die, so he could replace you without raising any questions."

"That's crazy talk", Asuka shrugged with a growing hint of uncertainty in her voice. "Nobody throws lives away like this. We're irreplaceable."

"To my father, nobody is irreplaceable", Shinji remarked bitterly, his gaze suddenly averted, his tone bitter. "Maybe he'll not kill me, but even that's a serious maybe. Asuka… I don't know how, but we have to fix those scores. Somehow."

"Well, you can start by not giving me crap for actually doing my job", she replied, the bitterness in her tone matching his own. She tried to make her tone light-hearted, but it was clear that his words weighed on her more than she cared to admit; she always perceived Commander Ikari as stern and cold – and she worried that Shinji might just be right. "Okay, I get it – you didn't want me to save you, okay. Maybe you even didn't need it. Have it your way. But I did what I was supposed to do, based on what I knew, and I tried to both fight the bastard and save Suzuhara, and I–"

"You still failed", Shinji interrupted – and immediately regretted his words.

"And you did so much better, didn't you?" Asuka snapped back with a snarl on her face, her anger quickly rising and eroding her composition. "Teach me, Master Shinji, how was I supposed to fight that thing, within the limitations you set, without any backup in sight, and not knowing its abilities? Wait", she raised her hand, seeing him open his mouth, "I'll make it even easier for you: you know all its abilities now, use that, use the hindsight… and go ahead: tell me how was I supposed to defeat it?!"

Shinji's lips turned into a thin line. To that, he had no reply; he just kept looking at Asuka with a tense expression on his face.

"So I thought", she let out a heavy sigh; her anger did not subside, quite the opposite: it was growing. "There was no bloody chance in Hell I could defeat that thing without going all-out. I effectively disobeyed orders by holding back at all! And I did that all for no, because of you, because I knew you'd not fight! I knew you'd die! To Hell with gratitude!" her voice rose to almost yelling, echoing weirdly in the small room. "But try to at least see the truth of it! Some of it! Accept that I just wanted to protect you! The only person I care about in this damned, pointless, useless world!" she rattled out–

–and suddenly stopped, the realisation of what she had just said reaching her consciousness.

She could easily imagine how her face was looking right now; she could feel her ears burn, the heat slowly creeping down. The heavy silence that fell between them and Shinji's shocked stare were not helping.

"Scheisse", she spat out and turned her back to him to hide her rapidly reddening face; her fists balled and opened repeatedly. "Tell anyone, no, even try to remember that I said that, and I'll kill you, even if this means that humanity dies. Or that I get sent back to Germany in chains."

"Asuka…" he whispered just audibly enough to be heard above the humming machinery, his tone carrying undertones she could not decipher. "I–"

"I'll kill you", she repeated. "So you better shut up. And if you want to talk, then it's better about our score, and you better have a damn good idea for fixing that, since you insist so much on we have to do that", she added, trying her best to keep her voice firm.

"Asuka, I just–"

She abruptly turned to face him and pressed a finger against his lips. "An idea, or a reason to be murdered? Choose wisely."

He gave her a surprisingly annoyed look and pushed her hand aside, eliciting a surprised but somewhat appreciative look from her in response – but before she could comment on that, he spoke: "I have an idea: we can start by being civil to each other. I know it's not easy, and I know we can't exactly start doing our homework together again… but perhaps we can try at least keep out of each other's hair?"

"You can always move out if you want to keep out of my hair", she pointed out.

"Didn't we have this talk, like, a few days ago?" Shinji objected in a tired voice, rubbing the bridge of his nose. "I was there first, and I'm not moving out. And even if I did move out, you'd both starve within a few weeks. Or die from food poisoning from takeout food and Misato's cooking. Or eat Pen Pen… no, definitely not; he would follow me; at least I bother to feed him fresh fish."

"I can cook, too", Asuka protested with an offended expression on her face; the remark about Pen Pen was just too absurd to address, so she decided to ignore it.

"I'll believe it when I see it", Shinji said with insistence in his voice, raised his hand, and shook his head as he saw Asuka open her mouth. "No matter, this is not bringing us anywhere. And I'm not moving out. You wanted a suggestion, an idea, okay, this is it: will 'stay quiet, no snappy remarks' work? It's not a high bar, is it?"

"Perhaps", Asuka shrugged. "But I can't promise I'll be quiet every time you open your stupid mouth."

A retort was on the tip of Shinji's tongue again – but squashed a desire to use it and shook his head. "I kept quiet most of my life. I won't talk unless it's necessary. Can you agree to the same?"

"So, you want to do a non-aggression pact? Of mutual silence?" Asuka probed with some confusion in her voice, her eyebrow raised.

"Something like that, yes. It can help, or at least stop things from getting worse."

Asuka hesitated for a moment, then extended her hand. "Deal. From the moment we leave this room, we talk only when absolutely necessary. Or through Misato. Or via notes."

"Deal. But make the notes in English, please", Shinji requested as he shook her hand, trying to ignore the emotions that came with that moment of contact.

"Sure, sure. You too", Asuka nodded. She wanted to protest, she wanted to object to his slanderous suggestion that her Japanese was still not good enough – but her mind refused to work. It was too busy trying to understand why the warmth of his hand burned so much.

Or, as much as she was going to deny it, defending itself from the obvious answer.

================================================================

And the confrontation ends, and the Angel fight is approaching. Expect the next chapter sometime in later April / early May.

I always forget back in the earlier episodes that Shinji was capable of a lot of dry humor.

Also his father would not care if Shinji would have commissioned something like that but his minions wouldn't dare risk it.

Shinji is often pushed to a role of a complete doormat once Asuka appears, ignoring his previous (quite cheeky) interactions with Misato. I find this quite sad, because this takes away from the character.

I believe he would regain it once he didn't feel intimidated. And this is just the right time for that - he's hurt, yes, but the "spinal insertion surgery", as Asuka put it, was successful. Even if it was not entirely her work.
Also his father would not care if Shinji would have commissioned something like that but his minions wouldn't dare risk it.
Absolutely. Gendo would be like "I don't care about his childish ideas, that's beneath me" while everyone else would panic at the idea. Not to mention that would be a sign of unbelievable disrespect in Japanese culture.

What happened, son? – chapter 8.

WHS?, chapter 8. – "It's a solution"

The next few days brought relative peace and became a lot quieter – and Misato Katsuragi, while still bemused by the whole situation and the inexplicable change in her kids' behaviour, was counting her blessings. She was, of course, tempted to ask what exactly has happened behind that closed door – but ultimately decided that satisfying her curiosity was not worth endangering the current state of affairs. Still, she had to admit – if only to herself – that she was seriously confused by how the events have unfolded – and that she still had no idea what to think of it.

***

When she arrived at the site of negotiations, she found the kids already outside, both of them sitting on the floor, separated by the doorframe. Shinji stood up when he saw her approach and reported: "It is done, Misato-san. No need to clean up the blood."

"I hope you didn't trash the room, either", Misato remarked dryly. "And you were supposed to call me. If Section 2 had found you here without–"

"We tried", Asuka interjected as she jumped up from her place. "Didn't work. You may want to have someone check the intercoms or see if your Do Not Disturb isn't up. Anyway, can we get out of here? This place is weird. I mean, I spent most of my life in places like this, but this is weird even for me."

"Sure, come", Misato nodded, giving her kids confused stares. "Are two you all right?"

"I'm fine", Shinji said, his tone surprisingly determined.

"I'm fine", Asuka said, her tone somewhat peaceful.

Misato could immediately tell that something has changed – which was good, because this was the point of the whole exercise – but she could not put her finger on what.

And to an expert on the human soul – a role she definitely saw herself in – this was a reason to worry.

***

"Misato-san, do you want seconds?" Shinji asked.

"No, thank you", she shook her head. "I had some cake at work, one of the techs just wed and brought some Baumkuchen."

"Ah. Sure", he accepted with a smile and a nod. Then he turned to Asuka, silently gesturing towards her bowl, a quizzing expression on his face.

Asuka pondered for a moment, then nodded and handed him the bowl without saying a single word.

He then proceeded to fill it and equally wordlessly set it in front of her.

She just nodded to that and started eating.

Misato gave them an odd look and a raised eyebrow – but when they did not react to that, she decided not to ask. After all, the day at the office was tiring enough, and risking having a difficult parenting talk was not worth it.

Little she knew that this was only the beginning.

***

Misato's worries and confusion only grew in the following days as she noticed something odd: an increasing number of small pieces of paper appearing around the apartment.

Initially, she thought nothing of them; after all, due to their oft-unsynchronised schedules and her working odd hours, Shinji sometimes left her notes when she would come home late – or woke after the kids departed for school. But those were incidental – and those she now saw were much more common, appearing in random places a few per day at least. She also quickly realised those were not intended for her: first of all, they were written in English; second, they were clearly about matters that concerned primarily Shinji and Asuka – homework, school uniforms, shopping for groceries, disputes over chores, matters of misplaced clothing…

'Okay, maybe it works better for them than talking?' was her thought after a bit of pondering on the matter – and left it at this, quickly starting to ignore them.

***

And yet, her peace was not to last; soon enough something awoke her interest again.

The notes started to look different, more colourful. It took her only a few glances to realise that after a few days of just being scribbles, they started to be adorned with stamps in two colours: first red and then, a day later, green. A logical conclusion would be to assume that red ones came from Asuka – the girl openly admitted her love for that colour, after all – and the green, by the way of elimination, had to come from Shinji.

The problem was that the tone of many of the stamps made them look like both colours would be coming from Asuka – and a very irked Asuka, to boot. The only one that was neutral was OK, present in both colours; but there was also OK, OK! in red, LANGUAGE and LANGUAGE! in green, FFS and FFS! in red, YOU DON'T SAY? in green, MOVE OUT in red, DO IT YOURSELF in green, and many – confusingly many, suggesting dozens of different stamps at works – others.

Misato finally snapped when she found a request to do the dishes out of turn, stamped interchangeably with red and green in a sequence that escalated from a steadfast refusal (NO WAY in red) to pressure (DON'T BE ASS in green) to questioning ability (FIX YOUR GRAMMAR in red) to a sequence of outright verbal attacks (IDGAF in red, followed by NOBODY WOULD WANT in green), ending with open verbal violence. "What is going on, guys?" she started, turning to both of her charges – who were doing their homework at the kitchen table. "Could you please stop this? You two are driving me crazy!"

Two pairs of eyes gave her an eerily similar look, both indignant and questioning.

"You're not helping, you know", Misato remarked with a twitch on her face, her expression now a mix of serious worry and fear.

"Well, what do you want us to say? That we're sorry?" Asuka scoffed with a shrug and an aside look. "That's his line, not mine, and to his credit, it's not so common anymore."

"Why are you doing this?" Misato countered, ignoring Asuka's comment. "I mean… what's the idea?"

"It's a solution", Shinji stated matter-of-factly with a similar, almost mirror shrug, his tone serious and measured. "It solves the problem you had with us."

"Okay…", Misato started carefully, "I have to admit, your scores have stopped dropping, you even started to regain them a bit, I grant you that. But… this… I mean… why?"

"It solves the problem", Asuka echoed. "You want us to go back to what we had before?" she asked with a raised eyebrow.

"No!" Misato shook her head vehemently, suddenly aware this was something of a threat. "But… could you please find some other way? Perhaps one that does not make me feel like a mental asylum patient?"

"Misato-san, why are you even reading those?" Shinji asked in a cautious yet insistent tone. "Any note meant for you would be pinned on the fridge."

"It would be nice if someone told me that before, you know?" Misato retorted with annoyance in her voice. "And still, even so, this… this is weird. Hard to ignore."

"It works", Asuka countered with a shrug. "You wanted the problem solved, and the problem is solved."

Misato turned her gaze to Shinji, reflexively looking for some help from him.

"I have to agree. It works", he replied, dashing any hope for sympathy, let alone salvation.

"But what about the… what's going on with the stamps?" Misato probed.

"Well, it started as a joke", Asuka admitted offhandedly. "Then it escalated. Those set-it-yourself stamps are really great!" she gestured towards an odd plastic contraption on the table, bigger than her hand. "Basically, they reinvented printing with stamping, Gutenberg way."

"And, I must admit, they are quite fun to use", Shinji added, gesturing to a similar contraption in his bag.

Misato glared at them for a while, then shook her head, pulled a can out of the fridge, opened it with just a bit of fumbling despite still being able to use only one hand – and downed half of it within five seconds. "You know, you two will make me go grey prematurely", she sighed heavily. "But I'll take that if this is what makes you work together."

"We're not working together", Asuka objected insistently. "We made a truce. If you push us into another synchronous dance routine, there will be blood on the floor."

"Or a quiet assassination", Shinji added in a deadpan voice. "I think I have a nice recipe for a fugu-based sashimi. Or, if things go well, we could settle for another round of negotiations in the white room without door handles. If we survive the first fight, that is."

"Guys…" Misato's palm met her face and her voice turned even more pained. "Nobody's going to do that to you again unless that situation with twin Angels happens again. And so far, as you two are well-aware first-hand, no Angel has copied another in ability… not directly enough to recycle any of the plans. So… just…" she paused and downed the beer to the bottom. "Just don't drive me completely crazy, okay?"

Another eerily similar reaction – a confused glare followed by a nod and a small shrug – made Misato even more nervous. "All right", Asuka added – and passed an open book with a note to Shinji, who took a quick glance, adjusted the contraption from his bag, stamped the note, and passed it back. Asuka thought for a moment, adjusted her own, and stamped back; this time Misato caught what was on the stamp: THANKS IDIOT, confirming that indeed, Asuka's stamp was red. The fact that the note came back with NO PROBLEM GENIUS only made Misato shake her head.

She kept staring at them for a few moments and finally decided that this whole thing was not a hill she wanted to die on; this conclusion led her to pull yet another beer from the fridge, doctor's orders be damned. Having those two under her roof seemed to still be worth it – but something was telling her that calculating it again, this time with sanity cost, would be in order sooner or later.

***

"Consider cutting down on the number of notes?" note appeared next to Asuka later that evening as she was reading.

NO. she stamped across the text and dropped the note to the kitchen's tabletop next to Shinji.

OK. he added a moment later – and the note landed next to Asuka again.

CUT HATRED DOT.

YOU FIRST.

NO.

OK.

Misato tried to ignore that exchange, even as it happened in front of her – but something was telling her that the sound of the mechanical stamp was slowly becoming a PSTD trigger to her.

'I wonder when I'll follow Ritsuko and need hospitalisation due to substance abuse, even if it's just alcohol… or a liver condition if the beer disagrees with the painkillers… ah, what gives. At least that would be some break from work!'

***

A few days and a grey hair or two later

"Okay, you're the living example of this rule, 'if something looks stupid but works, it isn't stupid'", Misato stated as she browsed the printout of the MAGI report. "Your scores have improved. They are still a far cry from what was before they started to fall, and I expect you to bring them back up there… but I think I can keep the Commander's wrath away from you."

"Lucky us", Asuka remarked bitterly. "The whippings have been cancelled then, I presume? Also, no continued beatings until the morale improves?"

"There's no reason for sarcasm, Asuka", Misato shot her a glare both annoyed and tired. "And I thought you would be happy to hear your score has gotten better."

"I am", she replied with a shrug, a hint of disdain present in her tone. "What did you expect me to do, smuggle fireworks and set them off here?"

Misato let out a heavy sigh and rubbed the bridge of her nose. "Asuka–"

"I am happy with that, if this is important to you, Misato-san", Shinji interrupted. "It means we can carry on, right?"

"As long as your score keeps improving, yes", Misato replied, glad at the rescue. "I expect it to be back at previous levels in a few more tests, though. So… don't assume it's all fine and stop working on that."

"Don't worry, Misato", Asuka grinned. "I found a bigger version of that stamp in the company's catalogue. It has thirty-two characters!"

Shinji did not comment verbally – but his expression was clearly one of approval.

It stood in huge contrast to Misato's expression of disappointment, dismay, and outright terror. She shook it off quickly enough, though – and followed with an explanation of some technical details, quietly wishing for something to save her from this ordeal.

***

About ten minutes later

'Me and my big mouth'
was Misato's main thought when "All personnel, battle stations, Level One" sounded across the corridors of the NERV Headquarters. "Prepare for ground-to-air intercept" followed as she already managed to order the kids back into their plugsuits and into their Units. Or at least, towards their Units, since – if she recalled correctly – only Unit-01 was in a state that made using it in combat a good idea. Still, it was unthinkable to deploy it alone, considering what happened last time when they were forced to fight without supporting each other. And so far, Angels have only been growing stronger.

She burst into the command centre, spared a surprised look towards Doctor Akagi, who was supposed to be still in her hospital bed instead of a command post, listened to the summary report, and started issuing orders. 'Let's hope your little feud won't get you killed, kids' rattled in her mind.

================================================================

This is shorter than the intended update, and it doesn't exactly get to the battle. I was, unfortunately, swamped with matters of work and healthcare, cutting down on my writing time. I will do my best to carry on, though.

You can expect the next chapter sometime in May.

What happened, son? – chapter 9.

WHS?, chapter 9 – "Once more unto the breach"

"Roger that", Asuka confirmed as she absorbed the tactical summary along with her orders while simultaneously trying to ignore the rather unpleasant, low-level but persistent pain-like sensation coming from Unit-02's body. "Well, let's hope the idiot doesn't mess it up so much that I have to intervene."

As if on cue, Shinji's voice came over the comms: "Unit-01 ready to intercept the Angel."

"Don't get yourself killed idiot", Asuka called to him over a local channel. "Killing you is my part."

"Don't worry, Asuka", Shinji replied in a tense, focused voice without the venom that would normally accompany a retort directed at her. "I'll be fine."

'Yeah, right', she scoffed internally. 'You'd be lost without me', she added – and quickly shelved that thought as unproductive and somewhat contrary to how she wanted to feel about him. Fortunately for her attention and focus – and unfortunately for her ability to perform in battle – she had to focus on walking immediately after being deployed: the legs of Unit-02, despite looking all right on the surface, felt more than a little bit wobbly. 'Shit. There goes my hope of saving the idiot. I'll have issues standing still while firing in this crappy state, let alone run', she realised with growing anxiety. 'Or dodge, for that matter…'

"Unit-02 in position", she reported a moment later and took a good, assessing look at the situation. 'Scheiße. This doesn't look good…' was the conclusion as she saw the Unit-01 in the first line, aiming its rifle towards the cloud of dust and debris that was growing beneath the slowly cracking dome of the Geofront. Unit-00 was only a few hundred metres away from Unit-01, its weapon aimed in the same general direction. The number of spare weapons surrounding the Units was also worrying. 'Let me guess, they judged the bastard so strong, that they think we'll need an equivalent of an artillery division to reach it? It would be nice if this was in the tactical briefing… and why aren't we firing already? There's enough ammo here to level the city, if we catch it by surprise when it's busy digging through… no, stop, this would be too risky, we could accidentally bring the whole dome on our heads…'

She took a deep breath; as eager as she was to fight right now, she also knew that acting against orders – and thus disrupting the plan the command had for them – could easily endanger not only her but also everyone else involved in the battle. And no matter how angry she was with Shinji, putting him in danger was definitely not something she would ever want to do. 'Murdering him myself, fine, that's my prerogative, but definitely not letting him be killed by some–'

She shook that thought off – and to avoid having its return, she focused on all the routine things that should be done before the fight: scanning the battlefield, locating possible alternative firing positions, defensive spots, and retreat routes, checking the positions of reserve armaments depots, orienting herself in regard to areas that needed additional attention, like the HQ – and only then refocused on the growing cloud of debris at the Geofront's ceiling.

That, of course, made the thoughts return, so she took another deep breath and flipped the channel to Unit-01 open. "Hey, idiot", she blurted out. "Promise me you won't get killed."

"Hey, worry about yourself", Shinji shot back in a determined and surprisingly focused voice. "I'll do my best to protect you, but please don't make it harder."

'That cheeky – oh, if he survives this whole mess, he's getting an earful for that', she huffed to herself. Annoyed and angry as she was, though, she had to admit that this was exactly the right answer to give on his part; the kind of answer she would gladly accept from him.

Regrettably, any further thoughts on the matter had to wait; Major Katsuragi's message from the command centre left no doubt that the battle was on: "Final layer breached! Target emerging! Engage at a distance for as long as possible, melee only if there's no other choice!"

"Roger that", Asuka replied, almost in sync with Shinji and only minimally later than Rei did – and her stomach twisted into a knot as she saw the projectiles explode without as much as slowing the still-obscured target.

"We are neutralising its AT Field, aren't we?" Shinji's confused and increasingly worried voice came over the general comm.

"I am not certain", Rei replied with her usual, level voice; Asuka could swear there was a hint of worry in her tone as well – and this did not put her at ease. "We should wait for its approach. Otherwise, we are wasting ammunition."

"Okay", Shinji confirmed – and ceased fire, resuming his ready stance.

As the smoke, dust, and debris cleared, Asuka could take a good look at the strangely rectangular Angel slowly descending from the top of the dome to the ground level. The empty eye sockets of its – for the lack of a better word – face seemed to coldly watch the Evangelion units, almost as if it was judging them; it looked not just weird, that was given among the Angels, but almost unnerving. "Das Ding sieht aus, als hätte jemand versucht, ein abscheuliches Monster zu zeichnen und auf halbem Weg aufgegeben", she commented in an annoyed tone. "Hat es überhaupt Arme?"

She came to regret that question a scant few seconds later when the stubby outgrowths suddenly deployed thin bands that immediately struck against Unit-01 and Unit-00 with horrifying speed and precision. Asuka watched in horror as both Units made their dodges – made them well but not perfect. "Unit-00 mildly damaged", Rei Ayanami reported in a focused but clearly pained voice. "Left arm remains attached but no longer responds."

Before Asuka could react to that, the bands unrolled and struck once more – and this time, both Evangelions managed to dodge on both strike and retreat, moving to Angel's opposite sides. "We can't let that continue, it will cut the cables at some point, on accident if not on purpose" came from the command centre in Major Katsuragi's concerned voice. "We must engage it in melee… wait, what is it doing?"

The Angel, without changing the direction it was facing, retreated about a hundred metres away, its back now less than fifty metres from the wall of the Geofront, both encircling Units now in its field of vision again. "Shinji! Rei!" Major Katsuragi exclaimed. "Move separately! Encircle it! Asuka, move behind Rei! We need to have two targets, opposite sides!"

"Wait, what – oh" came from Asuka over the questions from other pilots as she realised what the plan was.

"Do it! It can attack in a cone, not in all directions!" the Major explained in a hasty voice. "Force it to focus on one of you! One dodges, the other attacks! Asuka, don't pose a target, you can't dodge in this state!"

"Roger that", Asuka confirmed and started to move. For a moment, a stray thought appeared in her mind: 'Is this thing confused, or what?'

She did not have much time to think, though: the Angel turned abruptly towards Unit-00 and Unit-02 as they moved towards their designated positions. Asuka tensed in anticipation of a strike – but she was still not the target. Both bands struck against Unit-00; it made the best possible dodge, aided by a few timely-delivered shots from Unit-01 – but it was not enough.

"Left leg struck", the command centre reported in the voice of Maya Ibuki. "Unit-00 is no longer stable, the blood pressure is dropping. Loss of operability in less than five minutes."

Asuka could hear Rei's protests over the comms – but she saw the damage with her own eyes; Unit-00 was down, and she was now on her own on this side of the battle. The irony of the fact that right now her survival depended on coordinating with the boy she has been avoiding for the last few days was not lost on her.

But this concern would not stop her, not make her hesitate. She braced herself – and when the order came to take Rei's place, she only grinned. "Finally."

***

Shinji Ikari was not happy with the situation.

He was, of course, never happy with any form of combat, be it a confrontation with an Angel, a verbal fight with Asuka, or a disagreement with Misato. But while some time ago that would have meant that he resigned himself to the situation and only tried to make it out alive, now it meant that he was simply doing his best to finish this properly – so he could go back to his relatively peaceful life. The fact that Asuka's life – or, at the very least, her well-being – hung in the balance as well was only adding to his determination.

Of course, the fact that it was about her life did not mean that he was going to accept her attitude.

And so, when "Hey, idiot, draw fire. I'll finish it off, and then we can go eat" came to him over the comms, he only rolled his eyes.

"And what do you think I'm trying to do?" he replied in an annoyed tone as he moved his Unit closer and did his best to extend the AT Field against the Angel. To his annoyance – and fear, as he would openly admit if asked – the Angel seemed to have changed its tactics; after yet another unsuccessful attack with the bands, it turned its head towards him – and fired a beam from its eyes.

'Damn it' flared in his mind. His dodge was successful – the beam took a moment to charge and its use was openly telegraphed by the glow growing in the Angel's eyes – but the collateral damage the attack caused made Shinji realise he could not let it be fired too much, lest there would soon not be much of the Geofront left.

And so, he was borderline elated when he realised that Asuka did not waste the time he was trying to buy her; he noticed a strong shimmering in the field behind the Angel, followed by the field parting – and a moment later, beheld impossible-to-miss explosions that, while redirected away from the Angel's torso, cut deeply into one of the stubby arms.

Shinji Ikari was not a bloodthirsty person – but a part of him smiled at the sight of a shower of ichor, tissue, and shattered bone, followed by an ear-piercing, horrific sound coming from the Angel.

That joy was short-lived, though: "Asuka, careful, it's still–" came over the general comms – and before he could react, the Angel turned abruptly towards Unit-02 – and the band from the undamaged arm shot towards her.

***

Asuka, revelling in her triumph, realised far too late that she just made a mistake unbecoming of a veteran she saw herself as: she stopped paying attention to an enemy that was still standing. Worse – to an enemy has just been injured, and thus made far more dangerous.

She heard the interrupted warning just before she felt a constricting force of something wrapped around her Unit – and realised with a sinking feeling that it was one of the Angel's bands. It was not exactly painful, but it was immobilising her arms and rendering her effectively helpless. 'Scheisse!' was about the only thing she managed to think of as the band pulled her from her feet and high into the air; the fact that it no longer held her was only a minor comfort in comparison to the fact, that she was, right now, flying fast towards a very hard ground.

'Not. Good.'

***

Shinji Ikari froze at the sight of Unit-02 caught and thrown like a broken doll; a part of him was telling him that the Entry Plugs were built to protect the pilot and that Asuka was relatively safe – but another quickly told him that this was far from a certainty.

This series of thoughts lasted just for about two seconds, though; the sudden awareness that Asuka might have been hurt and that the creature responsible for that was right in front of him led him to a quick, logical, and merciless conclusion – and a wave of anger rose within him, replacing any fear or doubt. He could hear a guttural scream, only to realise that it had to be his own – and he started to charge towards the Angel that was just turning back to face him.

He was registering some voices, most likely orders from the command centre – but those did not matter.

The thing that just hurt Asuka was right here, right in front of him, and he was not going to be stopped.

The hand of Unit-01 darted towards the skull-faced head of the Angel and caught it in an iron grasp – but he did not stop there; he kept charging and pushing the Angel until its back crashed against the nearby wall of Geofront, its AT Field flickering increasingly at all points of contact. A crunching sound that followed would be unpleasant, if not outright horrifying, to most people – but for Shinji, this was a sound that brought satisfaction, a confirmation that he hit the target just right. With one hand holding the Angel's head against the Geofront's wall, Unit-01 delivered a violent punch to the torso; the AT Field kept shimmering in an increasingly chaotic manner, losing strength with every second.

Another wave of anger came upon Shinji – and he delivered another blow. And another. And another. And another.

He let go of the damaged head; Angel's skull-like visage was shattered and covered with dark ichor. He paid this no heed, though; the blows to the torso, now delivered faster and faster with both arms, held the Angel in position by their sheer force.

The sound of cracking bones, armour, and rock behind the Angel became one in his ears; the Angel's AT Field was almost gone, reduced to pitiful, tattered shreds on the edges.

All that was left in Shinji was the anger, channelled through Unit-01, leaving horrifying marks on the broken body of the creature.

***

Asuka's eyes snapped open after a short moment of unconsciousness. She tried to move – and this has immediately proven to be a serious mistake.

She was aware that her own body was most probably in quite a good shape – after all, LCL was known to provide a lot of cushioning and the Entry Plugs, as long as their integrity was not compromised, provided almost perfect protection to the inhabitant – the problem was that she was still quite well-synchronised with Unit-02, and thus felt every bone fracture and every twisted joint. She was able to break the fall somehow, but it was still a fall from a great height – and Unit-02 was not in the best condition to begin with. 'Fuck. I'm being useless again! At least I managed to hurt the bastard… let's see what use the idiot made of that…' she decided and started to half-limp, half-crawl towards the nearby hill. It hurt, of course – but she was quite determined to see what was going on; the fact that the comm channels were quiet only made her more curious – and worried.

And once the sight unfolded before Asuka's eyes, she immediately knew it was worth the effort. The second thought that appeared in her head – right after "you go, boy!" – was gleefully calling him "that idiot bastard that finally found his balls". The feeling of pride was rising in her chest as she watched Unit-01 hit the Angel repeatedly. "He's not even using weapons… I wonder what made him go like – oh."

A sudden realisation made her feel both very warm – and kind of ashamed. Of course, she did not have much time to dwell on that feeling; the brutal beatdown has taken an unexpected turn.

"Oh. And he grew some teeth, too…"

***

The jaw of Unit-01 cracked open, its head raised high; Shinji let out a roar, perfectly mirrored by Unit-01, a roar that carried over the battlefield and slowly turned into a chilling howl. He grasped the Angel's half-crushed head again, pushing it against the wall and holding the Angel in place once more. The fingers of the other hand dug deep into the outer layer of the Angel, ignoring the final, barely flickering sparks of the dying AT Field. Another sound of cracking bone and metal was followed by a large piece of Angel's armour just casually tossed aside.

Unit-01's hand reached deep into the Angel's exposed body; Shinji's fingers closed around the soft flesh of the creature, tore it out, and cast it aside. A moment later, another handful of bloody tissue followed, then another, and another, and–

Shinji was remotely aware of some odd, high-pitched sound, oddly resembling a wail; it took him a while to realise that this was a cry of the creature he was currently tearing apart with his own hands. Under different circumstances, he would have been surely horrified by this – but right now, nothing really mattered except the creature's death and his vengeance. Any attempts at resistance – like its ineffectual try to use the band from the remaining arm – ended up in yet another brutal blow and another fountain of alien ichor.

'You hurt her! You will never hurt her again! Nobody will!' rang in Shinji's mind, over and over. 'Die!'

Suddenly, a stray thought appeared in his mind, a realisation that punching and tearing was simply not enough, that he wanted to do more – and he happily followed that instinct without a second thought. The metallic taste of blood and raw flesh filled his mouth as Unit-01 dug into the alien flesh, rending skin and muscle alike, crushing bone and tissue alike, tearing it apart, chewing it off, and swallowing the chunks. The Angel was most likely still alive – but it mattered not.

The unbelievable feeling of triumph and the dark satisfaction of the vengeance well executed were all he felt at this moment.

And he revelled in it.

***

Asuka expression was inscrutable. On one hand, she was happy to see the Angel that harmed her and her beloved Unit die in such a brutal fashion. On the other, she was a little bit worried for Shinji; trying to eat your opponent was not exactly a hallmark of sanity. On the third, she has just gained a lot of respect for him – and she was somewhat flattered by the fact, that he did something like that in an attempt to avenge her. On the fourth, she hoped that this display of savagery will not convince Misato – or even the Commander – to make Shinji step down as a pilot on the basis of questioning his mental health.

She shook her head. 'No. History is written by the victors, and you don't put someone who just triumphed on a trial! This is a success, a huge success', she rationalised. 'They already chewed him out for hesitation last time, so they should be happy with his bout of violence. And our orders and purpose are more than clear: we are supposed to kill the Angels. And this one looks pretty much killed', she noticed with grim satisfaction and a wide smile emerging on her face. 'If I wasn't already madly in love with that damned idiot, I would've fallen for him here and now', she admitted to herself; the carnage she was just watching made her happy in this dark, but welcome way. 'Let's hope he realises we're meant for each other, no matter how much bad stuff is between us, and we can live happily–'

An ear-piercing roar interrupted her musings – and suddenly, she could not help but stare wide-eyed at Unit-01, its AT Field taking a form of a shining aureole around its body. This lasted just for a few moments – but Asuka could not help but being awed by the beauty of the spectacle.

'I must make him teach me this trick', she noted to herself as she watched Unit-01 slowly fall to her knees over the eviscerated carcass of the Angel, the light that surrounded it slowly fading. 'It's a cool trick…'

***

The times after a battle always felt somewhat surreal. The carnage, the emotions, the whole adrenaline rush – all that was very recent, but at the same time, belonged to the past. And it was too soon to start analysing things; that would happen during debriefings. Most of the time, time just after the battle was a lull, a moment of peace between the heat of the battle and the heat of the debriefings.

What started to worry Asuka was the fact that she was not being retrieved – and since she switched her Unit to preservation mode, she had limited ability to perceive her surroundings. But the radio should be working, and she should be hearing the general chatter – but so far, nothing was coming, and her calls were not being answered.

She was slowly suspecting that some freak accident caused the NERV HQ to be destroyed in the moment of triumph – and her brain started to construct increasingly darker scenarios based on that. She was around 'I am going to die here, suffocating in the increasingly murky LCL' when she was raised on the radio.

"Asuka, do you read me? Asuka, please reply", suddenly sounded in the concerned voice of Major Katsuragi.

"I'm here, Major", she replied. "What took you so long?"

"Technical issues", Major's voice was more than concerned, Asuka realised; she sounded almost disturbed. "Can you walk?"

"I can try", Asuka checked the vitals. "Well, more like limp and crawl. And not very far, unless you bring me a cable."

"Roger that. Proceed to the closest retrieval point then, Lieutenant Ibuki will send you the coordinates", the Major ordered. "If you manage on your own, great; if not, just call for a power outlet."

"Roger that, heading that way", Asuka replied and slowly restarted Unit-02's systems, raising it from the hill, careful not to incur any further damage. "How's Shinji?"

"We… don't know yet", Major Katsuragi admitted hesitantly.

"What do you mean, 'you don't know', don't the Plugs have their own sensors? He's alive, right?" Asuka asked, her stomach quickly turning into a ball of ice. 'There was no explosion! I saw his Unit just sit down!'

"We're working on it", Katsuragi replied, her tone measured – but Asuka knew her well enough to tell that she was not very certain of her words; she sounded almost insincere. "Head to the retrieval point and come to the main lab once you're able to" followed in a tone that told Asuka everything she needed to know.

"Roger that", she confirmed, any happiness from the victory now turned hollow, replaced by cold, dreadful feeling – and a single thought in her head: 'If he dares to die, I'm going to murder him!'

================================================================

And this is the battle proper. Finally. Shinji's tastes may undergo some changes, I guess. And Asuka is not going to be very happy for now.

The chaos continues, and my health continues to put a damper on my writing, but you can still expect the next chapter sometime early July.

What happened, son? - chapter 10.

WHS?, chapter 10. – "Can I live without you?"

"Ah, Asuka. Come in", Misato greeted her charge. "Take a seat. I take it you've been cleared by the Science Department?"

"Yes and no, but yeah, I'm all good", Asuka confirmed as she dropped onto the chair. "They kicked me out from the main lab and told me to go to Medical for clearance. They say that Doctor Akagi isn't there and the Lieutenant is too busy."

"Well, there are some issues…" Misato confirmed with a sigh.

"Some issues?" she spoke in a raised voice; she trying to keep her voice sounding unconcerned, but this was not exactly working out. "I have some issues, Misato. What's going on here is… well, straight from Carl Gustav's desk, I guess? So, explain that to me like I was five. Why all I hear is that he vanished? How could this happen? He exploded? Someone waved a wand and he's now invisible and Section Two is looking for him and spraying flour everywhere? He got his sorry ass dissolved in LCL? Evangelion ate him? What's going on? Nobody is telling me anything!"

"It's because we're not entirely sure what happened to him… what is going on with him", Misato replied, rubbing the bridge of her nose, her eyes closed, her voice pained. The last thing she needed was pressure from yet another person – but it was obvious that Asuka was not going to relent without getting some answers. "His plugsuit is still inside the Eva, holding a roughly human shape, but his body… just isn't there. And nobody has opened the Plug since the battle, so he didn't just slip out when nobody was looking. Lieutenant Ibuki is doing what she can with the tools we have, but from what she's telling me, the readings from Unit-01 itself are either perfectly normal or completely useless garbage, depending on what method she uses."

"What about Doctor Akagi?" Asuka asked, her voice still raised. "She's the expert on those things, right? Best in the world, I heard?"

"Um… well… she's on the funny farm again, I'm afraid. And this time it's likely for good", Misato replied with a bitter sigh and gave Asuka a look so tired that the girl suddenly felt bad about pressuring her – if only for a moment it took to squash that sentiment; lives were on the line here, particularly one life she cared about. "I mean… she went back to the hospital, and she's staying there under observation, and the prognosis… well. She's alternating between unresponsive and babbling some worrying stuff, and everything points to a serious mental breakdown… so the Commander decided to leave her there and keep Lieutenant Ibuki as the Acting Head of the Science Department for now."

"So… in other words, he's somewhere inside but nobody can say what that means exactly; the only person who might able to guess what is really going on is catatonic or crazy depending on the phase of the moon; everyone else is scrambling for answers or panicking; and all we know is that we are one idiot and one Eva short?" Asuka listed on a single breath.

"Pretty much", Misato confirmed with a sigh and an unchanged, tired look. "And let me add a few more facts atop that for you: Unit-02 has more broken bones than it has intact ones, Unit-00 – the only available Eva at the moment – has only one working arm, the Geofront is damaged to a still uncertain extent – they're mapping it still – we have a gaping hole in the ceiling all the way through all the layers of armour – big enough to an Angel to come through, as you doubtlessly saw one do – and some of our surface equipment, including some catapults and weapon stations, is not responding, most likely due to the cabling damage", she listed.

"Wonder-fucking-ful", Asuka said with a blank expression, soon covered by her hand. "What do we do now?"

"Well, we carry on", Misato replied with a shrug and a voice both tired and determined. "There's always some time between the attacks, let's hope it will be enough to pull him out, fix the Units to a passable state, and possibly bolt some steel on the holes and slap some paint on a thing or two."

"And if we can't?" Asuka asked with increasing tension in her voice. A stray thought appeared in Misato's mind, a question about how much more would it take for the girl to snap – and she did not like the most probable answer.

"Then we'll try to put Rei in Unit-01 in a cross-synch test and see what will happen. I mean, that'd be my suggestion, since it's the only one without anything broken… perhaps except its entire control system, that is. I'll defer to Acting Science Department Director in that", Misato replied. "As for the other things… teams are going to be working day and night."

"So, I guess I'll ask Lieutenant Ibuki then", Asuka let out a sigh. "Next station, Science Department!" she declared as she jumped up from her chair, turned in place, and pointed her finger in the general direction of the Science Department labs.

"Hold it, Asuka", Misato demanded, her tone suddenly firm.

"Hey, she might have more answers!" Asuka protested as she turned back and rested her hands against Misato's desk. "I'm not sitting here, waiting for scraps of information!"

"This is exactly what you're supposed to do", Misato countered, "this or follow orders when your Unit is ready to activate or deploy again. Are you really going to disrupt her work by walking right up and asking questions? You're worried about him, I get it, and don't even bother saying that you're not", she added as she saw Asuka open her mouth. "It's only natural, even if you think you hate him. But walking onto and bothering the best scientist we have at the moment while she's actively working on helping him is not going to work."

"So, what I'm supposed to do?" Asuka asked with barely contained aggression in her voice.

"Go home. Eat something. Feed Pen Pen", Misato listed, once more closing her eyes and rubbing the bridge of her nose. "Get some sleep, I suppose."

"And then what?" Asuka scoffed.

"Carry on!" Major Katsuragi burst out suddenly, making Asuka wince, her voice suddenly angry instead of tired. "That's what we always do, right? You've always prided yourself on being a soldier. Well, that's your time to shine", she added in a firm, surprisingly cold tone. "Carry on, Pilot."

Asuka wanted to yell something back, to tell her that this was wrong, to remind her that this was not all she was – but the cold, angry look in the Major's eyes stopped her. She straightened out instead, clicking her heels and standing at attention. "Yes, ma'am. Am I dismissed?"

"Yes", the Major shot back through her clenched teeth.

Asuka clicked her heels again, turned, and almost ran out of the room.

The moment the door slid close behind the girl, Major Misato Katsuragi dropped on her chair, her head tilted back, her eyes squeezed shut. "That went fucking well, Katsuragi", she whispered to herself in a mocking tone. "You managed to lose one kid and antagonise the other, all in a day's work. And you're no closer to sorting things out at all…"

She took a deep breath and forced down the unpleasant feeling of being responsible for this failure. After all, she was not the only one to blame – Asuka's behaviour was unprofessional, and while being a teenager without an actual rank justified her attitude somehow, she should know better than to add to problems in a high-pressure situation. And the fact that Misato had to act as both the commanding officer and a caretaker was not making things any easier for either of them.

But this did not matter, not at the moment; the situation was still far from stable, the forces under her command were greatly diminished, the availability and usefulness of the Science Department dropped from questionable to borderline non-existent – and her report to the Commander was due soon. 'I'll deal with her later', she decided as she reached for the next preliminary report from the stack on her desk. 'Her mental state will be meaningless anyway if we all die because I missed something…'

She read through half a page before a chilling thought made her stop and tap the intercom immediately. "Give me Section Two, immediately", she requested of the operator and tapped her fingers nervously while she waited. Once the connection was established, she barked a few orders, accepted a confirmation – and returned to her work.

***

In the persistently and endlessly rationalising mind of Asuka Langley Soryu, the justification for choosing to walk was her unwillingness to put up with the annoyance of having to wait for the bus. The truth that she would never admit, even to herself, was her fear of returning to an empty apartment, an apartment devoid of the smell of delicious cooking and the presence of a certain idiot. She could rationalise that there was someone waiting for her there, but it was quite obvious that Pen Pen's company was a poor remedy for the big, Shinji-shaped hole in reality. 'If at least Misato had been there–'

Asuka angrily kicked yet another stone from the increasingly overgrown path and let another stream of German curses out, most of them directed at Shinji and his tendency to run away and hide from his responsibilities – only to immediately feel stupid about it. While she hated to admit that, she knew all too well that he did this for her, or at least because of her. Of course, the moment she realised that, she started to feel even worse.

"Verfluchte Dummkopf… warum muss ich dich so lieben? Warum dich? Warum…" she kept going, breathing in and out in an attempt not to start crying; she mastered this technique over the years – and it seemed to work for now. Granted, this was a secluded place – taking a supposed shortcut brought her into some old hill path, most likely a leftover from the times Tokyo-3 was just Hakone – but someone could still happen to walk by. But she knew this was fighting a losing battle, and at some point, she would have to–
"Damned idiot! Why must I love you so much? Why you? Why..."

"Do you need help, Miss?" a male voice interrupted her trainwreck of thoughts.

"Hau ab, du Arsch–", she started and reflexively tensed in anticipation having to hit someone – and stopped herself immediately as she noticed that the man in question was wearing a suit with a small insignia of NERV in its lapel. "Sorry", she shook her head. "I thought you were someone else. Why are you following me, actually?" she asked after a moment of confusion. "I'm still within the city and this is a safe area, right?"

"Orders", the man explained matter-of-factly, disregarding the other question in a manner suggesting that the conditions she listed did not matter under current circumstances. "Do you want to be driven home?"

Asuka pondered for a moment. Staying here was quite tempting, after all – it was a quiet place, away from the prying eyes of most people – if you ignored the bodyguards, that is. On the other hand, she was no longer alone here – and while those guys would keep their distance if she asked them to, they would most certainly keep watching her, making the privacy she hoped for in this spot an illusion at best. It was quite dark already, meaning she would have to walk home soon anyway. "Yes, please", she finally decided with a resigned sigh and followed the man when he nodded and started to walk down the gravel path. "Who sent you?"

"I cannot tell you that, Soryu-san", the man replied. "We get our orders on a need-to-know basis, and mine came directly from the head of the section; who gave them to him, I do not know. All I know beyond that is that I'm not allowed to accept you sending me away."

"Ah. This kind of 'keep an eye'", she rolled her eyes with another sigh, her anger slowly returning. "But will you at least stand outside the bathroom door?"

The man paused for a moment before speaking, his expression showing confusion for a short moment. "Soryu-san, you know well that we never enter the apartment you live in unless we're explicitly told to or called for an emergency", he explained patiently after a few seconds; a part of Asuka's mind quietly appreciated his professional composure. "Someone will be outside the building, though, should you need assistance."

"Right", she let out yet another sigh. "I'm not Ikari, you know, I'm not going to run away, you don't need to guard the door. Or maybe you should be looking for him?" she chuckled bitterly. "You found him once, didn't you?"

"I wouldn't know, Soryu-san", the man replied diplomatically. "I wasn't there. Please get inside", he opened the door of the black car.

Asuka rolled her eyes, her anger being channelled into increasing annoyance on her part. Getting information from anyone in NERV was difficult, but she suspected Section 2 was second only to the Commander and Vice-Commander in that regard. 'At least Misato can be negotiated or bargained with. When she is not a total pain in the ass and is not acting as if she was a Sturmbannführer instead of a Major, that is…' she mused, recalling the unpleasant dismissal that sent her on this way. "Right. Thanks", she finally said and got inside – and this, along with another thank-you when they arrived, were the only words she spoke before entering the apartment.

***

Asuka was pushing herself through the routine motions of the evening with great effort. She managed to eat despite not being hungry at all – granted, it was just some sandwich cobbled together from the cold pieces found in the fridge, but it was better than nothing; making a proper dinner just felt pointless. She fed Pen Pen using the canned food that Shinji kept for emergencies – sure, it was not the fresh fish he usually got from Shinji or Misato, nor was it Shinji's tasty cooking – but it had to do for now. She brushed her teeth – but taking a full shower felt like being beyond her.

'How can a place so familiar suddenly be so… weird? Alien?' she mused almost mindlessly as she slid with her back against the wall once she was done with most of the chores. She moved only when Pen Pen started to make annoyed sounds at her, forcing her to realise that this was not a wall at all, but his personal fridge of residence. "Ah. Right. Sorry", she shook her head and rose slowly. "You have no idea what is going on, right? What does it mean to feel like I do? You're just confused he's not here, and you're unhappy with the mediocre dinner…"

Of course, a "Wark?" accompanied by a tilted head and a following shrug were the only answers.

Asuka pushed down a sudden desire to punch Pen Pen; she was angry, yes, but not angry enough to take it on the innocent animal, no matter how everything around her, including him, irritated her.

Finally, she made the usual rounds around the house, checking the doors and windows – rounds that usually were Shinji's duty – and dropped on the bed in her room. "Shit", she mumbled into the sheets. "Why it had to be him? Why couldn't I trigger that… thing, that… mode?", she mused with her annoyance, mixed with anger, growing. "That would've been useful… and I'm sure he wouldn't miss me that much", she added with a sudden spike tipping the scales towards anger.

She turned on her back and stared at the ceiling for a long while, her thoughts chaotic, slowly shifting towards the emptiness of this place again. The silence surrounding her, the distinct lack of sounds and smells that usually came from the kitchen, was driving her crazy.

"Verfluchte Dummkopf!" she burst out again. "Warum?! Warum du?!"

She turned again and punched the pillow. "Ich hasse dich! Du… du…"

Any further words got lost in the sobs – and quickly dissolved into nothingness as she started to cry in earnest.

***

Her eyes shot open at some unexpected sound; after a few moments, she knew it had to come from the outside, probably from someone on the street. 'I must've fallen asleep…' she realised with annoyance. Begrudgingly, she got up – and the reality of the situation reasserted itself, making her clench her teeth and ball her fists. "Scheiße…" was the most emotion she could conjure, though; the crying exhausted her entirely.

She forced herself to go to the bathroom, glancing at the clock on the way; it was the middle of the night, which means she still had a few hours left to sleep. The look in the bathroom mirror was not very optimistic, but it should pass before the morning came. She crawled herself back to bed, cursed her past self for the stupidity of crying over the bedsheets, and found herself enough dry surface to lie on. The anger and distress did not go away, but she was quite sure that the exhaustion she felt would put her to sleep soon enough.

But there was one more order of business to deal with.

"God above…" she started in a hoarse voice, her breath ragged. "I'm not sure if I told you this… I guess I did but it didn't get to you, or you just forgot. So, listen carefully now: I don't like being tested. I don't like this at all. I know all that crap about being chosen and special, about keeping your faith in the face of the worst things happening…" she paused and drew a ragged breath. "Well, here's some Breaking News for you: I never had much faith, and I'm rapidly approaching the moment where I've had enough of all that shit. And I do mean enough. I'm not some biblical figure, you know. So… would you kindly cut the crap, let the idiot out and back to me, I promise to take him in and hold him, even if he's an ass about it… and we can then go our separate ways, you and me? Go test some prophet of yours, that's what they're for, right? Or catch some random shepherd, I guess there are some still left in this messed-up world…"

She paused, took another deep breath, and shut her eyes tight. "And if you want to tell me that you can't help me, that your power doesn't reach inside any of the Evangelions…" she trailed off, and a small, low giggle escaped her mouth, colouring her tone. "Then I'll happily make use of that and have a few words with you, personally, once we are all done with the Angels", she added in an equally hoarse whisper. "Amen."

================================================================

This was a tough one, for a few reasons, and it's only a part of what I wanted to write from Asuka's perspective. The other part will either come next, or after another switch in perspective.

Expect the next chapter sometime late July or early August. And it will likely not be the last.

What happened, son? – chapter 11.

WHS?, chapter 11. – "I don't want to live without you"

The next day

"Pilot Soryu, reporting for duty", Asuka spoke as she stood in the doorway of Major Katsuragi's office.

The Major raised her head from the map she was studying with two officers Asuka did not recognise and looked at her uninvited guest with something resembling a weird mix of hope, worry, relief, and annoyance. "I'm sorry, Asuka, I don't have time for you now. Shouldn't you be at school, by the way? You're not on Pilot duty right now, not until we put Unit-02 together. That's why I told you to–"

"Yeah, I know what you told me, 'carry on as if nothing happened'", Asuka finished for her, her tone annoyed, almost angry. "Sorry. I can't. I just can't. Besides, those at school are rarely surprised if I'm missing a day after a battle", she explained with a shrug. "Medical reasons, NERV duties, all that stuff."

The Major let out a sigh and shot Asuka a tired glare. "There isn't much to do here for you right now, you know, and everybody's busy. So, if you don't want to go to school, fine, but please don't bother anyone."

"Sure thing", Asuka shrugged. "I don't need a nanny, I just dropped by so that you know where I am should shit hit the fan. I'm here to talk to Unit-01", she finally admitted, her eyes cast aside. "I won't be taking your precious time."

"Wait, what? What would that bring?" the Major asked with a raised eyebrow, trying to sound less annoyed than she was; another outburst would not be a good thing and she wanted to make up for yesterday, but Asuka had quite a skill in trying her patience. And this was not one of those things where being skilled got you positive scores.

"It's like those patients in a coma, right? Some of them hear everything that's happening around them. If nobody has any better ideas yet, maybe this would work?" Asuka explained. "Or I'll just annoy him out", she added with a wry, forced smile.

The Major pondered for a moment, then raised her hands in a gesture of surrender. "Okay, but if the techs tell you to leave and let them do their work, you leave, okay?"

"Sure", Asuka shrugged. "See you–"

"Wait", Misato requested. "There is something you could do before that… talk, actually. Could you pick up the lunch for Lieutenant Ibuki, bring it to her, and make sure she eats it?"

Asuka gave her a confused look and opened her mouth to protest – but as she looked at the Major's expression, there was something more to it, some kind of suggestion… 'Ah. Of course. Clever one, Misato', she admitted to herself with a small internal chuckle. "OK, sure", she agreed, doing her best to keep her tone as neutral as possible. "I'll be with my Unit-01 later then, and if they don't let me near it, I'll be with my Unit."

"If you want to visit Unit-02, ask the Lieutenant if you actually can go near it. I believe it's leaking something biohazardous right now", the Major warned – and turned her attention back to the map.

"So am I, daily, and especially after it's your turn to cook", Asuka added quietly with a shrug and an eye-roll as she departed.

***

About forty-five minutes and one angry rant at the cantina personnel later

"Pilot Delivery Service, your lunch is here!" Asuka declared as the door to the office slid to the side.

"Oh", Lieutenant Maya. "Soryu-san, I wasn't expecting you here."

"Well, there's something about not expecting people in red, I guess", Asuka replied with a forced smile, "but this is usually about robes, not hair. Anyway, I'm here with your food and orders for you to eat it."

"Um, I'm a little busy with–" Ibuki protested, pointing to the screens displaying some running simulation and a chaotic stack of notes spread across the few desks in the room.

"Lieutenant", Asuka assumed a serious posture she saw when Misato – no, Major Katsuragi – meant business and supplemented it with a tone she heard at those times. "I am under strict orders here. And the sooner you eat, the sooner you can get my, um, get this idiot out. But you won't do this well on an empty stomach!" she insisted. 'And, if Misato hears I failed to make you eat, she'll send me back to school. And I'm not having that.'

Lieutenant Ibuki stared at Asuka for a few moments before she reached for the containers. "I was under the impression that it was me who outranked you, Soryu-san", she added with a half-serious, half-amused look as she set them down on her desk.

"Details, details", Asuka replied with a shrug. "Besides, one", she ticked off on a finger, "I don't have an official rank at NERV aside from 'Pilot', which – I guess – means we're not even in the same chain of command, and two", she ticked off another, "I'm simply relaying orders from the Major. So, it's not that I am ordering you, right?"

Lieutenant Ibuki gave Asuka another confused look. "Well, you're not wrong", she admitted with a tired smile on her face – and started eating.

Asuka settled on a randomly chosen chair and, after a few moments of observing the Lieutenant, started to speak. "I know you're not supposed to tell me that, but… what really happened to that idiot?"

"It's… complicated", the Lieutenant started in a composed manner after a few moments of thinking, putting her words between bites with a flair of a person who was used to wasting as little time as possible on such trivialities as food. "But he simply reached synchronisation levels we thought impossible… and since they were thought impossible, there were no safety mechanisms. I'm still collecting measurements and running simulations… but I think what happened here is akin to what happened during the first Contact Experiments, the research when they tried to establish a control system for the Evas."

"I heard of those, yes. This was running well into my training, right?" Asuka's brow furrowed. "But those were not done with Entry Plugs, correct?"

"Definitely not", Ibuki confirmed between bites. "They interfaced with the Cores, more or less directly. It was a… risky concept, to say the least."

"A few people died before they got it right, if I recall correctly?" she probed, trying to keep her tone neutral; thinking that this could have been Shinji's fate was simply unbearable. The 'And Mama got crazy from the same' thought that slid through her mind got pushed back as well.

"Not… entirely", Ibuki reluctantly explained. "They… they didn't exactly die. And this is what we're trying to work with right now."

Asuka gave her a confused look. "Lieutenant… please, either tell me that I'm not cleared for this and tell me to get out… or explain. I'm kind of tired of getting let around and stonewalled, and this is my… fellow Pilot inside this thing. And sooner or later, I'm going back into the Plug, with the awareness that this", she gestured vaguely towards the screen displaying Unit-01 measurements, "can happen to me if my Unit goes bananas. So, I guess I have some right to know?"

"They… disappeared", Ibuki explained, her glare cast aside; Asuka did not comment on that expression, but it made her immediately suspicious. "They never returned from the capsules, yes, but the bodies were never found, and considering that they were in a closed environment, the only explanation was that they were absorbed. Somehow. This is not a new thing, since there were cases of people being eaten by the Evas during the production process", she continued despite starting to shiver, "but this, I mean this kind of absorption, happened in test-ready models. Those were thought to be safe. Well, as safe as they could make them…"

"But they got at least some of them back, right?" Asuka eyed her with a hidden threat in her glare, a worrying streak of thoughts and realisations forming in her head.

"Um… some of them, yes", Lieutenant Ibuki replied in a tone that notably lacked confidence. A shiver ran down her spine; she was not quite sure why this fourteen-year-old girl made her feel like she was being literally interrogated. 'She doesn't have any authority here!' she reminded herself as she tried to compose herself. "Most never returned. Some returned… changed", she continued, entirely missing a twitch on Asuka's face in reaction to that word; Asuka's gaze felt like fire on her skin already and she was trying to avoid it, without much avail. "But, on the other hand, while they left their clothing behind, this clothing did not maintain its shape. So… we think Pilot Ikari's state is similar, but not the same – but we're using what we can as a template, or at least some starting point. And… we have some readings from the plug itself. This is why after the initial attempts to eject – before we learned of the situation – neither the Major nor the Commander ordered the Plug's forcible extraction. We're afraid that breaking the link between the Plug and the Eva Core may make us lose him", she explained. 'Or damage Unit-01 even further, which seems to concern the Commander more than the boy's condition…' she recalled – but decided not to relay that to Asuka.

"What are the chances?" Asuka probed, her voice low but intense. "Of pulling him out, I mean?"

"We… we don't know", Lieutenant Ibuki admitted with dismay. "There are a few things we can try, as I said, we're starting with the date from the times of the Evangelion developments… but I didn't have time to delve into all of them yet, and sempai… I mean, Doctor Akagi, is… not available."

"Yeah, I heard. Trip to the funny f– I mean, I heard she didn't take that last battle well", Asuka remarked, her tone still worryingly focused.

"Yes", Lieutenant Ibuki confirmed with a pained expression.

Asuka waited for a few seconds for a follow-up, but none came. "But why didn't you have time? Isn't he a priority?" she insisted after a few moments of awkward silence.

"Well… there's this matter of Unit-02…" Ibuki pointed out, her discomfort now obvious. "Restoring it was given a higher priority since we don't know for how long will Unit-01 be… locked. And while Unit-02 is much better off than after the previous battle, you didn't exactly land softly. I'm sure you felt–"

"Ugh. Don't remind me", Asuka interrupted with a visible shudder. "But isn't this something the technicians should do?"

"They never work without at least general supervision, unless the tasks are routine. And the regenerative bath, especially so soon after the previous one ended… well, quite prematurely, is not routine. And then an emergency one was applied, too… this is something that sempai would need full attention for", Ibuki explained, discomfort obvious in her tone. "Just… don't tell that to the Commander, okay? I shouldn't even be telling you that. I suppose I shouldn't be telling that to anyone…"

Asuka gave the Lieutenant a wary look; she kept telling herself that the glimmer of uncertainty, despair, and borderline madness in those eyes in front of her was just in her imagination. But Maya Ibuki's behaviour and tone were definitely not putting her at ease at all. "Okay. But you have a plan for him?" she finally probed, trying not to think about the fact that her boyfriend's well-being was resting in the hands of an overworked person who just lost her mentor and whose sanity seemed to be dangling on a thread. Granted, Lieutenant Ibuki was brilliant by most standards – but this did not seem to help her when it came to mental fortitude.

"Yes, definitely", Ibuki confirmed, nodding intensely. "A preliminary one. I'll dig into the matter and start setting the equipment up once I'm done with other Units."

'Translation: she's got nothing', Asuka realised and despair started to claw at her soul again. "Can I at least visit Unit-01?"

"Oh, no, I just told you, we're not moving the Plug", the Lieutenant objected vehemently. "That'd be–"

"Not in that way", Asuka shook her head and rolled her eyes. "I just want to go to the Cages, and, I don't know, talk to it? You know, coma patients, sitting and talking, maintaining contact?"

"Ah. That", Ibuki realised. "I… suppose?" she replied, her uncertainty obvious again. "I mean… if you're not afraid to go down there? I mean… of course you're not", she corrected herself, her voice gaining a measure of respect. "You pilot them… Just remember to pay them proper respect and watch your steps, the Cages are not the safest environment."

"'Proper respect'?" Asuka asked, her eyebrow raised. "What do you mean? We have a new protocol, or did I miss something in the training?"

"They are dangerous beings, you should know that the best", Ibuki explained, her voice dropping to a whisper full of reverence. "They deserve our respect. And… be careful not to touch Unit-01. It's been thoroughly decontaminated, but… but we really don't know what happened out there and it was in a very close contact with the enemy."

"And you think it may eat me?" Asuka chuckled. 'Perhaps I should let it?' a thought appeared in her mind, suddenly and unexpectedly. 'Perhaps I'd go where he went?' she mused before pushing it away as a thought induced by being in the company of a person who looked like she was about to follow her mentor to the funny farm.

"It's not unthinkable, Soryu-san", the Lieutenant replied matter-of-factly. "We just… don't know what may happen, it was moving without power already. Remember: respect the machine."

"I'll keep that in mind", Asuka replied carefully and stood up. She was simultaneously somewhat satisfied with the answers and increasingly creeped out by the Lieutenant's behaviour. "Thanks for the info… I'll be in the Cages then."

"Good luck… and by all that is holy, please be careful!"

"Sure", Asuka shrugged and left.

'Mein Gott… How come that someone, exposed to Evas for a few years, became like this, and I, piloting one for almost ten years, remained a paragon of sanity?' she asked herself on the way down. 'Perhaps I got myself some immunity? After all, if you ride horses all your life, you can't be afraid of the horse, right? It's just there, and you just know how they behave…'

She took a deep breath and let her mind wander for a moment. 'And what did she say…? That they came "changed"? Maybe I should've pressed for that? Okay, another time, now the idiot takes precedence. But I know Mama was working on Evas… but they never told me what exactly her field was, and now… shit. This all starts to make sense', she realised. 'The wrong kind of sense, though…'

The elevator door opened, revealing the Cages – and she was greeted by a few surprised glances that quickly turned into those of recognition. And when she confidently stepped out, sent a few nods and spoke a few greetings, acting as if she was supposed to be here, nobody paid her any more attention.

'Ha, bow to my superior charisma! Bow to me… or at least, ignore me and let me do what I came here for!' was running through her head as she walked the platforms, paying only partial attention to her balance; after all, she was familiar with the unsafe spaces where Evangelions were stored most of her life; Germany and Japan branches seemed to have a similar approach to safety, it seemed. The only thing that seemed different from the German branch – and from her previous visits to this place, for that matter – were a few odd objects, placed here and there across the Cages, objects Asuka could swear were not there before, objects that looked like small shrines. Granted, they would not be out of place in Japan in general, since in Asuka's perception, it seemed that there was a temple, a shrine, or at least an altar on every other corner – but NERV seemed to be free of such expressions. 'At least until now', she realised. 'I wonder what happened, did the Commander hit his head or what? Or maybe the good Doctor ordered those placed when she hit her head?' she mused with a small chuckle. Those miniature shrines did not get in her way, so she would be content to ignore them – except their presence simply puzzled her.

Those thoughts and pondering disappeared quickly, though, and she felt the need to hold to something once she laid her eyes upon the Unit-01's form. 'Oh' and 'fuck' were two things that came to her mind at the moment as she looked at the fractured armour that looked like it was torn from the inside, at the damaged exposed flesh barely covered by the bloodied bandages, at the unsettling look from the now-uncovered unblinking eyes – and at the weird protrusion of the Unit's Core. The Core that should not look like this, or at the very least not be so exposed. While she was well aware that Cores were integral parts of Evangelions, this one, for some reason, looked like it belonged on an Angel.

"Gott…", she finally vocalised her thought processes. "That's not the Eva I saw you use last time. What have you done to it, Shinji? What have you done to yourself? Where have you been? What have you done?"

Her words, of course, were not met with any direct answer except for a few odd glares coming from the technicians working on Unit-01 – working with great care, as she noticed, wearing protective gear that was one step away from a full hazmat suit. "Please keep your distance from the Evangelion, Pilot Soryu", one of the technicians addressed her, his tone leaving no doubt about the seriousness of the warning. "It is not safe to touch."

"Don't worry, I'm not here to poke it or anything. I'm here to talk to it", she replied before turning her tone from dismissive to inquisitive. "Can you tell me what's the deal with those small altars?" she asked, pointing to one next to the door. "They weren't here before."

"I'm sorry, I've got no idea", the man replied with an apologetic expression. "You would have to ask Lieutenant Ibuki. If anything happens around here, she is bound to know about it. We're on–"

"Let me guess, need-to-know basis?" Asuka interrupted with a sigh and – seeing the man nod to that – turned back to Unit-01 and pondered for a moment. "Thanks. Carry on", she added a moment later. The technician might not have been exactly helpful – but she knew all too well that being polite to people who maintained your battle gear was not just good etiquette – it could mean the difference between having your Unit done just so it passes inspection – and having it in its top shape. 'Not that anything could bring this sorry thing to its top shape, I guess' crossed her mind as she kept scanning Unit-01 from all angles she could get a look from – and no angle made it look any better. Actually, looking at it from some angles made the Unit look even worse, making the creepy-looking protrusions around the exposed Core more obvious.

Finally, Asuka decided she had seen enough and simply sat down on the walkway in the front of the Unit, her legs dropping over the ledge of the platform, her expression clearly saying that she was ready to bark at anyone who would dare to tell her to move. Nobody did, though; the technicians were going around their tasks methodically, and once they were finished, they packed up and – with a final word of warning directed at Asuka, namely a repeated instruction not to touch anything – departed, leaving Asuka alone to stare at the mutilated behemoth in front of her.

"Where are you, Shinji?" she finally spoke once she was alone. She knew there were cameras watching her – it was beyond any doubt that the Cages were heavily monitored – but she did not care about being seen talking to the machine. And while she suspected someone could listen, she dismissed it as too difficult – the Cages had very weird acoustic properties – and completely pointless; for once, she felt content with the fact that nobody paid any attention to her.

Well, except there was one person who could pay some attention to her. And preferably all of it. The problem was, of course, that one person was somewhere on the other side – whatever that meant at the moment – of Unit-01.

"Make no mistake", she started again, words reverberating off the shattered armour and dying in the depths of the cage's shaft, "I still think you're a complete idiot, that you were a jerk when you told me I didn't do enough… okay, maybe not a jerk", she corrected herself. "But definitely in the wrong and quite unfair. Not that I expect you to apologise or anything…"

She took a deep breath.

"This is stupid. You apologise for everything, and when it would be called for, that one time… that one time you don't", she shook her head. "You're really an idiot."

She paused again; for a while, there was only the ever-present silence, interrupted only by an occasional random sound from the ducts, from cage mechanisms, from some technician still working nearby.

"I get you. I understand why you were mad", she started again, this time in a lower voice. "And… and you have every right to be mad. I get it. But… but so do I, right? And now… and now I don't get to tell you that in person, do I?"

This time the pause was much longer; emotions were slowly bubbling to the surface and Asuka suddenly realised she had to consciously focus on not starting to cry.

"I love you, okay?" she started once more, this time just above a whisper. "I love you, and now you – you're gone, somewhere, gone – and we parted in anger – and you're gone because–"

She balled her fists and clenched her jaws, her thoughts scattering into a chaotic mess just as her words did a second before. Tears formed in her eyes; talking would now mean letting them out – and while she did not mind being seen talking to Unit-01, she would very much mind being seen crying. She knew that the reasonable course of action would be leaving.

Of course, Asuka Langley Soryu was, despite her declarations, rarely reasonable.

The sound of steps made her eyes snap open. The sudden influx of sensations: cold, coming from the surface she was laying on; the sight of sparse lamps on the ceiling; odd smells filling the air around her; the grogginess from sleep – all that led her to the obvious conclusion. 'Shit. I fell asleep watching over him… I shouldn't have "laid down just for a second", I guess' she realised as she supported herself with her elbows and took a quick look around as she rose back to the sitting position. The steps, heeled shoes on metal, judging from the sound, kept approaching. 'And let me guess, now I'm getting an earful…' she sighed and braced herself as much as possible while staying seated.

The door slid open. "Here you are, Asuka", Misato addressed her, her tone indecipherable in the strange acoustic of the room. "Nobody looped the camera recordings, after all."

"I told you I was coming here", Asuka retorted without looking at her. "Someone had to watch over the idiot in case he came waltzing out in style. Or decided to fall down on his face when emerging. Which is a more likely scenario, I suppose."

"Asuka… every single monitor of Unit-01 would go off like crazy if he does. You don't have to do this", Misato insisted as she approached slowly.

"Yeah, but before someone gets here, he could already be on the bottom of the shaft!" Asuka retorted. "Those SAFETY FIRST signs I kept seeing everywhere are perfect jokes, considering half the walkways don't have railings. Which is a concept that is centuries old at the least, by the way."

"Well, you're not wrong on that one", Misato agreed with a chuckle – and a moment of silence fell between them.

"Go ahead", Asuka finally broke it in a resigned tone. "Do it. Scold me. Tell me I'm irresponsible staying here, tell me it's stupid to wait for him, just as you told me it's no use. Let's get it over with, so you can tell me to carry on."

There was a sigh that sounded almost sad; Asuka wrote it off as the place playing tricks with the sound – again. She had to change her mind, though, when Misato spoke. "I'm not going to. I'm not blind, Asuka. You care about him, even if you show it in your… usual way."

"What's wrong with my way?" Asuka asked, her tone indicating how much off-balance this exchange has put her. "I'm not going to be all cutesy over him, ever."

"I'd send you to medical for DNA testing if you did, in case you were an impostor", Misato countered. "This doesn't change my point, and I'm not here to discuss this, anyway."

"So… why are you here?"

"To take you home", Misato replied – and Asuka saw a hand extended towards her. "Let's go home, kiddo. Sure, there's no good food waiting since our best chef is… well, in trouble from being a hero – but I'm sure we can find some takeout. And we need to feed Pen Pen."

"Okay. But only if you stay instead going back to NERV once you drop me off", Asuka demanded.

"Deal. I didn't intend to, believe it or not. We both need rest", Misato replied in a voice that sounded almost relieved. "Come. There are better places to talk."

"I guess", Asuka agreed and finally looked up – and her tired gaze met another, similarly tired one, letting a small realisation enter her mind: 'She's just as invested in all that as I am… different reasons, same feel' and made her feel like an idiot. She shelved it for future consideration before taking Misato's hand – which has proven to be a good idea as she was barely able to balance on her somewhat numb legs. "Really. Railings."

"We'll see to that… once the more urgent matters are resolved", Misato replied with a subdued chuckle.

"Yeah, this sounds like ad calendas graecas in NERV parlance", Asuka replied in a similar tone.

"You're a soldier, Asuka, you know how things are done in the military", Misato pointed out.

"And I often regret that I do", Asuka let out a sigh. "Goodnight, idiot", she turned to address Unit-01. "Don't drop into your death when I'm not around, but if you want to get out in the meantime and surprise me with a nice dinner, feel free to."

The silence was, of course, the only answer. But Asuka could not shake the feeling that those unblinking eyes were watching her – and that Unit-01 was listening.

================================================================

I just can't seem to finish this story properly; I mean, I don't feel forced to finish it at all cost, but it's much longer than I expected it to be (on the other hand, it's not the first time it happens to my story). This and the previous chapters were supposed to be a single Asuka chapter, now they're split. I was hoping to wrap the story with a final chapter after that, but there may be two if the content proves sufficiently different thematically.

Either way, expect the next update (final or not) sometime in September.

What happened, son? – chapter 12.

WHS?, chapter 12. – "What is happening to me?"

Shinji Ikari was confused.

Granted, this was hardly a new thing for him; his entire life had been quite confusing since the moment he got a letter from his father, ordering him to come to Tokyo-3. And then things have gone even weirder, worse, and – if only sometimes – wonderful in the days and weeks that followed. But until now, no matter how crazy things have become, they have been at least following some logic. Perhaps it was logic that he often only understood after the fact and with some effort – but it was certainly there.

Regretfully, it seemed that the reality finally had enough of playing by the rules anymore and the logic went out of the window the moment the battle with the most recent Angel ended. One moment he was inside the Entry Plug, relishing in his triumph and howling for every living being to hear – and the next, he was laying on his back on something soft, hearing the sounds of the forest around him, and seeing the sun shining through the coronas of the trees.

'Did the Eva explode?' was his first thought – but he dismissed it quickly; it was quite obvious to him that he would not have survived that; Entry Plugs were resilient, yes, but not that resilient. 'Was I thrown out, perhaps? Is this the Geofront's forest?' followed – but it was dismissed as well; the Evangelions were quite tall, and a fall from such a height would have definitely hurt or even killed him, not place him comfortably on a moss carpet. Besides, the Evangelions did not catapult people, they ejected the entire Entry Plugs. He would still have been surrounded by darkness and LCL – and he was quite sure that right now he was, in fact, breathing air.

The possibility that he indeed was killed and that this was some antechamber to the afterlife appeared in his mind and was quickly swept away. It was simply too terrifying to consider; there had to be a different explanation for his strange position.

The images of the fight were slowly returning to him: the usual pre-combat tension, the deployment inside Geofront after the Angel pierced the defences as if they were nothing, the initial engagement. He quickly recalled the adaptive tactics they employed to cover the barely functional Unit-02, he remembered the partial successes, the Angel's horrifyingly effective counterattacks–

'Asuka!' flared in his mind as he remembered Unit-02 being tossed in the air and away, followed by the returning memory of the insane anger, the maddening fury, the unthinkable rage that he felt as he was pounding the Angel with his fists, as he tore it apart, as he–

His stomach turned for a moment. 'Did I really eat that thing?' he asked himself, his confusion displaced by revulsion for a moment as the memories of having tasted blood and raw flesh returned. 'I think I did… did this take me somewhere, perhaps?' he mused for a moment before a more worrying thought seized his mind: 'Did it kill me?', immediately followed by 'Asuka! I can't just… I can't just… she'd be alone?' and then with a bitter 'But she doesn't care for me anymore…'

He clenched his teeth and shook his head in an attempt to push those thoughts away; as important as Asuka was to him, he knew all too well that thinking of her now would only make him morose. 'The Angel is dead. I'm sure of that. She was far away from it, so she's likely not affected by what happened to me… I think. They'll rescue her. And if she's affected just as I am… then she has to be here too' he reasoned carefully. 'But… where is here?' he turned his attention back to the surroundings. 'Did I get transported somewhere, like with the sky-sphere Angel? Or maybe I'm still inside, with my Unit playing tricks on me?' he mused as he carefully tried to sit up – only to simply see more trees around him. At least the forest, while still confusing, now seemed quite normal – and a look around has proven to him beyond any doubt that this was not Geofront; there was a true sky above him, not the dome falsely pretending to be the sky but unable to withstand a few moments of observation. Standing up helped even more; now it felt more like one of those regular forests near the place he grew up in – sure, you could get lost in there if you did not know them – but it was just a forest. As absurd as it felt to him, this was at least a touch of normalcy in his current situation.

Except, of course, for the fact that right now, he still had no idea where he was – or even what he was supposed to do. 'Okay… basic survival lessons from NERV… how did this go… when I get lost, I'm supposed to remain in place, so the people searching for me – namely, Section Two – have a chance to backtrack or do a grid search… but how does this apply here? It's not a school trip nor a military operation, I think…' he mused as he slowly wandered between the trees until his feet found something resembling a path. 'That's much better', he thought with hope rising in his heart, amplified by the fact that he could see some different, decidedly non-forest-like colours in the distance.

'What in–' appeared in his mind a few moments later when a large empty green area became visible between the trees – and, more importantly, it was followed by a large mansion, a kind he had only seen in historical movies before. He had next to no time to process that, though, when a door of the mansion opened and a woman in a dress – oddly matching the historical setting, as he noticed absent-mindedly – emerged, rushing towards him.

"Shinji", she called to him happily, her face showing obvious joy and relief. "Welcome to my garden."

He could only stop and stare. Obviously, meeting someone here likely meant that he could at least learn what was going on, and that could improve his situation at least a bit – but this was not what was on his mind right now. Right now, this sight only increased his confusion; this woman knew his name and seemed to be happy – almost elated – to see him, but he did not seem to know her. On the other hand, he could have sworn on his life that he had seen that face before; it looked like a face from his dreams – but, to his annoyance, he could not remember who that was. And yet, the familiarity was so annoyingly nagging to the point of gnawing at him.

The woman stopped a few metres away from him, uncertainty suddenly painted on her face, mixing with the joy she displayed a second before; her whole demeanour seemed to now ask an unspoken question: "Don't you recognise me?" straight at him. And so he kept staring – and suddenly, like a veil lifting in his mind, images came to him: images of this face smiling to him from behind a glass, a face looking from behind strange machinery, a face that was soon to disappear along with his– his–

"M-mom?" he tried, his tone full of confusion and reluctance. "Is – is that really you?"

"Yes, Shinji", the woman's expression turned from worry to happiness again. "I'm your mom."

"How?" he tried, recalling his previous thoughts. "Am I dead? Is this… the afterlife?"

"Hardly", she chuckled as she slowly took a few steps towards him, as if she was afraid of startling him. "It's… my home."

"But… you are dead", he protested, the confusion painted on his face only deepening. "I mean… were dead? I… I remember that you vanished…" he kept going, barely keeping himself from devolving into babbling. 'Vanished. Yes. I saw her vanish. And Father said the grave was empty…', he realised – and suddenly, a logical explanation presented itself. "Oh. You vanished here. To here, I mean. But what–"

"You were always a smart boy", she remarked, her smile unchanged. "Come", she said as she extended her hand. "Let's sit. We have a lot to talk about."

"Mom?" he tried, his tone still full of confusion, his expression matching that.

"Don't worry, son. I'll explain everything", she said, her smile widening, her tone warm.

Shinji nodded carefully and took her hand; she started to walk slowly, leading him out and away from the tree line. "Do you know what happened to the others?" he started.

"Yes", she nodded. "They're safe. You killed the Angel. And you saved them. Please, take a seat", she gestured to a chair.

Shinji blinked and shook his head, pausing for just a moment: he could have sworn this table and those chairs were not here just a second ago. On the other hand, he was tearing an Angel apart just a few minutes ago; in contrast to that, this sudden if minor change in scenery was just yet another piece added to the puzzle. 'Or yet another hallucination that my brain is having… what was I thinking when I bit into it? Who said that Angels are not poisonous? Is there perhaps an Angel atlas? Those that can be eaten, those that will give you terrible visions, and those that can be eaten, but only once?' rattled in his head without much rhyme and reason. "Mom?" he tried again, unable to think of anything more elaborate. It still felt weird to him to call a woman he just met Mom, yes – but his instincts, his subconscious mind – they were telling him that this was the right thing to do.

"Don't worry. You're safe here", her smile widened again – and that smile quickly melted most of his doubts about how to call her. "Excuse me for a moment…" she added as she gazed somewhere past him, seemingly far away.

Shinji's brow furrowed – but again, this seemed to be just another oddity of this place, a place that still had no name for him, made little sense, and was not inducing any panic only because it was quite serene in comparison to what he had experienced just a few minutes ago. Granted, a lot of questions were swirling in his head – but he could not even know how to start asking them. Seconds passed, thoughts piled up – and the silence was becoming increasingly heavy. Granted, he did feel safe here – but this did absolutely nothing to lessen his confusion. He could accept that his mother was sitting in front of him, yes, even if this was based on his gut feeling and dim memories from his childhood, he could accept her word that everyone else was fine – after all, the battle was over and the Angel was dead – but everything else was still a huge whirl of confusion, a confusion that threatened to turn into fear, a confusion that–

"All right", Yui's words, after a few moments of staring into some distant point, interrupted his slow descent into the mental spiral. "I had to tell a friend that all is well… and I want you to meet someone. She will be here in a few moments. In the meantime… welcome. I have missed you so much", she said in a wistful tone as she took his hand. For some reason, the glove of the plugsuit did nothing to stop the warmth he suddenly felt from this touch, a warmth very different from the scorching flame that Asuka's touch was, a warmth that he associated with safety and care, things he missed dearly for a very long time.

"Mom…" he spoke, trying not to think about what he had missed; he was not prone to crying, but he felt this could happen to him if he dwelled too much on that particular feeling without bottling it up. "What… what is happening? Where am I– where are we?"

"Ah. Right", she chuckled. "I'm sorry, Shinji. I'm not used to guests. Well, at least not to those that need explanations. This is my home… or, more precisely, a creation of my mind where I live. You are inside Unit-01 right now, which is, and forgive me if this sounds odd, my body. You are a guest of my mind."

Shinji shook his head, his expression invariably confused. "How?"

"I'll try to explain, but this may take a while, so please be patient… how much did they tell you about how an Evangelion works?" she asked, her expression quickly turning into far more professional and focused. Still, she did not release his hand.

"Not much", Shinji admitted carefully. "When they put me into the Eva", he paused for a moment and shivered, "they just told me to try to walk as if it were my own body… and then to learn by doing, in short. It didn't go… well", he shivered again and looked aside. "The Eva went… a little bit crazy and killed the Angel for me."

"I know, Shinji", Yui chuckled with a small, sad smile appearing on her face; she squeezed his hand. "I was there. It was me who went crazy. It was the only way to save you then."

Shinji nodded, suddenly uncertain what to say. "Thank you?"

Suddenly, the hold on his hand became much stronger. "Always. I'm your mother, Shinji. I will always protect you", she stated in a firm voice. "Every time you fight, you're in my hands. I can't do everything, a lot depends on you, but I'll do whatever I can to protect you."

He nodded again and after a few moments, he started to speak again. "Then they told me what to do to keep my synch rate high, because this makes me fight better… wait. Wait. Wait. Wait, wait, wait, wait!" he shook his head again, a sudden expression of shock emerging on his face. "What do you mean it was you? What do you mean by your body? I've been piloting… you?!"

"In a manner of speaking, yes", Yui confirmed with a nod, her tone and smile now somewhat embarrassed. "I know it's difficult, I'm sorry to dump it all on you, but it's important that you understand."

Shinji nodded carefully. "I'll try?" he said in a weaker voice.

"I'm sure you'll manage, as I said – you're a smart boy", she smiled again before picking up the explanation again. "You see… when we built the Evangelions, it was obvious that we needed some kind of a control system. But Evangelions are not just machines that could be implanted with a radio control system… I mean, we could have, there were some ideas about building powerful servomotors into the armour and – I'm sorry", Yui chuckled, seeing how Shinji's expression of shock was now mixed with a tilted head of complete lack of understanding. "Too technical, right? To the point: we quickly realised that soul-to-soul communication is the only way and that the souls had to be close… in other words, family members were the only reliable options. And to amplify the protection factor, it was – in short, it's much more complicated than that – that the mothers of the pilots were the best choices. We were planning to make that system reversible, for both the pilot and the operator to enter the machines only as needed, to have a pair of mother and child work together as needed", she explained before her expression turned somewhat grim. "It… didn't work, to say the least. Once I became integrated, I simply couldn't leave. I tried to leave on my own, but nothing worked. What was worse, I could not communicate with the outside at all. So… to avoid going insane, I build this", she gestured around and paused as she finally looked and Shinji's face and realised that his expression reverted to complete confusion with a dash of shock.

"Um… would you like some tea, perhaps?" she asked with a cautious smile as she reached for the teapot.

***
Shinji was blinking from time to time since this was about the only thing that he was capable of doing reliably. He realised he had been a little bit wrong: what was happening to him now, what he was hearing right now, what he was asked to believe – all this had suddenly become much less comprehensible than the situation he had faced in the heat of battle not so long ago. After all, facing mortal danger has been a regular occurrence for him in the last few months; it was not something he relished in, obviously, but something he got used to to some degree. It was an ill he had and learned to bear.

But this was a flight to a new, undiscovered country. Suddenly learning in short order that his mother was alive – for a certain meaning of the word – and has been around all the time, in addition to the fact that he has been, quite literally, piloting her body – this was rapidly growing to be difficult not just to accept, but to even start processing. Still, even at this moment, he did not forget his manners. "Yes… please", he replied and tried once more to collect his thoughts once Yui let go of his hand and started pouring. A few moments of silence and a taste of tea that brought a renewed sense of safety finally let him ask another question. "Mom… does this mean that… that Asuka is the same? I mean… her… Unit? That her mother is inside? I mean… that her mother is the Unit?"

"Yes, she is", Yui confirmed with a smile. "I'll explain that in a moment. Tell me … did you ever feel me reaching out to you?"

Shinji's expression became ponderous and it took him a few moments to slowly nod. "There was always something… familiar, something I never felt in the simulation bodies. That… that was you?"

Yui nodded. "I tried to comfort you whenever I could. And… Shinji, this is important", her tone became serious; her warmth suddenly disappeared, replaced with a serious demeanour. "I don't know if they won't try to pull you out forcefully soon, somehow. Please keep that in mind – nobody on the outside can learn about what is going on. Do you understand me? Don't tell your commander, don't tell any of the scientists, don't tell your father – he knows, of course, but he must not know that you know", she listed, her tone insistent. "You may tell Asuka if you think she can be trusted to keep the secret since it is about her mother as well. The moment the others know that you know… they will turn against you, they will hurt or destroy us, and all hope to make it right will be lost. Please, promise me you'll keep the secret!"

Shinji was about to conclude that nothing weirder was going to happen to him when he had to admit that this conclusion would have been premature. "Um… I… I don't talk to them that much, anyway", he said, his tone uncertain. "But… Misato-san… the one that gives us orders", he clarified, "Major Misato Katsuragi, she's okay, isn't she?"

"She follows your father's orders. She must not know that you know", Yui insisted. "And telling her… telling her would bring nothing. I understand you might trust her… but do not in this case. There is too much at stake."

Shinji nodded carefully, unsure what to say. "All right", he finally said. "I'll keep the secret. But what about Asuka?"

"You can tell her", Yui confirmed. "And… I think you should try to talk to her again. I know you like her… and I think she likes you as well", she added with a smirk.

"Mom!" Shinji exclaimed with a sudden blush on his face.

"You certainly seemed to be quite taken with her", Yui commented, doing her best to feign innocence.

"Mom… please", Shinji pleaded. "How… how much did you see?" he asked with an embarrassed expression on her face.

"Enough to know that you are serious about this", she replied with a sly smile. "The mother always knows. And… I think she is quite serious, too. On that note…" she raised her head as if she heard something. "Good timing."

"Mom?"

"There is someone I would like you to meet", Yui smiled. Shinji followed his mother's gaze as it turned towards the treeline – and almost jumped up from his chair as a redheaded woman in a similar, old-fashioned dress emerged from the forest. "Welcome back", Yui smiled at the newcomer. "Soryu, this is my son, Shinji", she introduced him with a smile. "I'm sure you've seen him before… but now the circumstances have brought him to us in person. Shinji, this is Kyoko Zeppelin Soryu", she introduced the woman to him. "She is Asuka's mother… and our greatest ally."

Shinji bowed as it was customary, watching the redheaded woman carefully. 'This is Asuka's mom? But… how is she here? Wasn't she supposed to be in Unit-02?' were the questions that appeared in his head – but once more, his upbringing took precedence. "Pleased to meet you, ma'am", he said, unsure what else he could say.

"Pleased to meet you, Shinji-kun", Kyoko smiled and bowed back. "I hope you'll enjoy your stay here. Ikari", she turned to Yui, "I hope you have some explanation for how this happened… because I have none beyond that this was not supposed to happen. This kind of a breach between the pilot layer and the Unit–"

"Well", Yui interrupted as a shadow of embarrassment passed through her face. "You are not wrong. This is unusual. I have a few ideas what the reason might've been, and we can talk about this later… but not before Shinji is brought up to speed and ready to be sent on his way."

"Um…" Kyoko's face expressed mostly confusion. "How? Isn't he now in the same situation as–"

"Definitely not", Yui objected and procured a large hand mirror from somewhere. Shinji, his confusion again growing and slowly approaching overwhelming levels, decided not to ask any of the obvious questions, like where from. "Look."

The mirror's surface showed the inside of the Entry Plug, with the empty plugsuit still holding a vaguely humanoid shape. Shinji's face went pale; 'What. Is. Going. On?' rattled in his head insistently as he stared at the image with wide eyes. "I… I thought I was still there. My body, I mean. I thought this was… a dream? I'm dead after all, aren't I?" he asked, his voice suddenly shaking.

"You are not dead", Yui insisted. "This is why your suit is still there, like this. You see, the movement of LCL inside the Entry Plug is constantly enforced via a number of pumps, nozzles, and drains; it has to be in order to maintain oxygenation, ensure uniform density, remove the carbon dioxide from the pilot's surroundings, and many, many other things; gravity is just not enough, so it's an active system with an elaborate fluid behaviour model; Soryu could explain that a little better I guess, but that's the gist of it. This normally doesn't affect the pilot just as a soft breeze doesn't make you fall – but it would certainly affect an empty plugsuit. It would be floating around before finally sticking to a wall somewhere. It didn't. Your body is still keeping its shape, holding it in place… even though it has turned into LCL. You are still alive. And I believe you can return."

Shinji's brow furrowed as he recalled some of his lessons from school; he did not want to speak up, but at least this allowed him to cling to something he knew, something familiar – and this felt like a blessing in the sea of growing confusion and madness he was currently sinking in. "I don't understand. How could I turn into LCL… and not leave some… um… things behind? Other than my clothing?"

"Things?" Yui and Kyoko asked almost in unison, their eyebrows raised.

"Um…" Shinji suddenly felt his ears burning; both women's attention was focused on him and he felt like his idea of deferring to something familiar backfired spectacularly. "I mean… excrement?" he explained in a meek voice. "The digestive system isn't exactly a part of the body… I mean, it's content isn't?"

Yui and Kyoko both chuckled. "Ah. That" Yui acknowledged in an amused tone. "Frankly… we don't know the details on how this works, to this day. If we did… well. Some things would've been much easier. But I don't think this was ever an issue… Soryu, correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think I left anything behind during the Contact Experiment?"

"Not that I know", Kyoko confirmed; Shinji was not sure whether he heard amusement in her voice too – or he was imagining it. "The Sanitary Concerns chapter would be ten times as long as it was if this had been an issue, I believe. So, Shinji-kun, either it works differently than the biology class would suggest – which would not surprise me, since the whole area is called Metaphysical Biology – or the… excrements are still inside the suit. Either way, if I understand correctly, your mom is saying that this", she pointed to the mirror that was still displaying the content of the Plug, "means that you can still be sent back with relative ease. In comparison to us, that is."

"Or pulled back", Yui added. "I'm quite sure they'll try a few things the moment we're secured back in the Cages and patched up."

"Likely. So, what's the plan?" Kyoko asked, her eyes moving between Yui and Shinji.

"The plan, my dear Soryu, is to have some tea and cake", Yui explained with a smile before turning back to Shinji. "And after that, or even during that, to discuss a thing or two. Or everything."

Confusion was nothing new to Shinji Ikari, there was no doubt; he had to admit that the contest for the strangest and most unlikely event of his life had just gained a very strong contender. Until a few months ago, this had been "visiting the grave every year", when he got to see his father; it was a window to a different world and a break in his boring, routine life. Then, it had been coming to Tokyo-3 and becoming the pilot, an event that turned his life on its head and claimed the first place, no contest. Then, after a decidedly too short a time, came Asuka and changed his life, their relationship taking the top of The Most Improbable Events list in turn.

And now he became literally lost inside an Evangelion. And he met his mother. And Asuka's mother. 'Shouldn't meeting your girlfriend's parents happen under some… more normal circumstances? Like… a dinner invitation? Or at least tea and– right. That we have', he chuckled internally as he took a look at the table – and once more, things that were not there a moment ago appeared on the table as if it was nothing out of the ordinary. He was not sure how it happened, and he once more decided not to ask – especially since his mother and Asuka's mother seemed to be deeply engrossed in some debate on how this could have happened to him and how to reverse it from inside, using terms he was only vaguely familiar with.

He took a deep breath and decided that since few things made sense anymore, he would rather concentrate on those that did make sense – and gracefully accepted the cake when it was handed to him. Its taste has been as wonderful as he remembered from his home, that part of his childhood when he did not feel lonely.

And that was enough – for now. He lost himself in the sensation, seeking a moment of respite and entirely unaware that there was yet a pair of almost unblinking eyes close by, watching him carefully.

But even if he knew, what would that be in the light of the events of today?

================================================================

I don't know what I was thinking that this could be the final chapter of this side story.

Expect the next chapter with the follow-up on Shinji's confusion around late October or early November.
