I really want the dentures for not good reason, but this works. I am a little uncomfortable about losing size change, but the reasoning is sound, if perhaps a bit less momentous than I would like.

I would like to suggest that they eye seems really valuable to me. Given how quests work, I assume that it activates automatically when we would have hit a game-over to give us a do-over, because any other implementation sounds really difficult to achieve. This would give us a canary to test the quest's difficulty, which is very meta, but sometimes a quest has an attitude that doesn't align quite perfectly with the gestalt, so things can seem like good ideas and be instant death, which is good to have a warning against. It also lets us take risks and thus gain strength faster. Anything that makes us more powerful would do that, but it is rare to know in advance how great a threat is, and death is usually more of a matter of misjudging what one can handle, than of simply being out-played.

Question on the jaws of the wendigo: Is size measured in Breadth, area, volume, time-space, hypervolume, soul, reincarnation, magical aura...?

Alright, this looks like it will be a fun quest.

I mean, who would want to stop or hinder our precious Shadow-Earth Crab from doing a simple task! All he wants is to more faithfully serve the being from which he was born, is that so much to ask?

What? You mean to tell me that the being he was born from is an entity of hatred and malice which wants to destroy and kill and cause suffering in those around him? That's a minor detail! Just look at how cute the crab is and you'll find that there's no way it could hold such emotions in his heart.

On a more serious note, this Crab is going to be nightmare fuel. A stealthy, dodgy, tanky crab that has a singular goal and purpose is going to be very difficult to stop. I'm excited to see where this goes, and I do really enjoy the illustrations!

Im back
Sorry about the lack of notice. The holiday season put a hitch in my plans in addition to the fact that i have just finished moving across the entire u.s.a while the moving process isnt quite finished as im living with my grandparents until i can get more permanent housing and a job, it does mean that im finally at a point where i can write again.

While ive been taking care of stuff ive been thinking about this quest and i came up with an idea. In addition to this quest i was thinking of running a light novel from the humans perspective. The idea would be (crab quest update > human ln update > crab quest update > human ln). I wanted to get yalls opinion on whether or not you would like to see this. It should not overly effect the pace that this quest comes out.

Im planning on getting the next chapter out by saturday at the latest. Sorry about the wait but i am happy to be back!

I like the idea of interludes with our human target.
> An idea of exactly why Lyakor wants this human in particular to die.
> An idea of the ramifications of this human's death.
> An idea of exactly how vindictive Lyakor is.

There's a lot to learn here.

Update is done but the internet is out at my grandparents house right now. Itll be up p much as soon as the internet comes back. Worst case when i move to my aunts tomorrow... unless her internet is down too. In which case A. Fml. B. Mcdonalds or starbucks wifi it is then lols.

Itll come out one way or another.

Chapter 3: Arrival

Kavouri sighed, of course Azulle wouldn't tell him what they did. That information might devalue the treasures themselves, and he would not be surprised if Azulle offered these treasures to these other mystery customers. Briefly, Kavouri considered backing out of the deal entirely before discarding the idea like so much other rubbish. Azulle might be a tad greedy, but he always delivered quality information. He ran a fairly honest outfit all things considered, probably even more so now that the subject matter was a herald test. Scamming the testers could be interpreted as taking sides, and Undettu and his followers typically tried to remain neutral in most conflicts.

So Kavouri turned to inspect his treasures. He eyed the jaw of a wendigo, a trophy attained in a brutal and vicious combat when Kavouri was still young. Its cruel and wicked fangs glinted ferociously in the soft light. It allowed him to alter his size at will by repurposing some of the Wendigo's strange magic. The item had proven to be quite useful for getting into areas he was normally too large for and adjusting his grip on things by shifting the size of his claws. He placed it back into his shadow. It was one of his oldest treasures and among his most valued.

He then inspected a singular eye that drifted through his shadow. Its blue iris was clouded by cataracts. A Witch's eye. Kavouri had obtained this treasure in return for sparing the life of a scorpion of Nalka. Neither the scorpion nor Kavouri had known the treasure's function, but since the latent power within had been clear, Kavouri had accepted the offer. Though he killed the scorpion the very next day when he had tried to ambush Kavouri in an attempt to get its treasure back. He'd since gotten it evaluated by Azulle in return for a favor, already repaid, and found that the treasure would break and give Kavouri a vision of his death, allowing him to avoid it once. An effect that the scorpion could surely have used. Kavouri placed the treasure back into his shadow. Kavouri would not find himself wanting of a second chance.

It pained him to look at the next treasure, a rot eaten rack of antlers drifted solemnly through his possessions. Taken as a trophy from a follower of Yaj'elle who had ambushed him, Kavouri took little pride in it. Kavouri was a creature of obsession and jealousy, he held a deep and twisted love for the followers of Yaj'elle. An echo of his master's feelings surely. The followers of Lyakor and Yaj'elle often came into conflict, but it was uncommon for lives to be taken in those battles. Something that confused the followers of the other gods, but made perfect sense to Kavouri. So Kavouri found these antlers, the byproduct of one such unfortunate death, quite distasteful. It allowed Kavouri to regenerate his wounds by draining the vitality of the antlers, resulting in their rotting, but Kavouri would not mind trading this specific treasure.

A spark of blue light flashed as Kavouri gave the treasure to Azulle and the antlers disappeared.

Kavouri smiled as he viewed the next two treasures. A large fang, taken from a werewolf and a severed tongue that whispered falsehoods into the mind of those who looked at it. The werewolf fang was taken from a wild beast, belonging to no god and the tongue was something Kavouri had torn from the mouth of a follower whom had been so bold as to betray Kavouri by sending him into an ambush. Unfortunately for the small marmot, Kavouri had survived. His death was slow.

Kavouri gave both of the treasures to Azulle, who accepted them wordlessly. The werewolf fang boosted Kavouri's strength by some small amount and the tongue made lies flow more smoothly from Kavouri's tongue. The first Kavouri no longer needed due to the herald's gift of power and for the second, well Kavouri doubted he would be talking to the humans.

The last treasure was an empty jar. It had taken Kavouri a long time before he had figured out how the thing functioned, but he had figured it out after much experimentation. It allowed Kavouri to whisper into the minds of others, enabling him to be understood no matter the language difference. Used more subtly it allowed Kavouri to place thoughts in a target as if they were their own. It was an excellent tool that had long been incredibly useful to Kavouri. From whispering into the minds of prey to guide them towards dead ends, to making enemies hesitate to just rote communication, it was Kavouri's most subtle treasure, and in some ways his most potent one as well. He had named it the Jar of Whispers. He would be keeping it.

"That is all I will offer." Kavouri informed Azulle.

"Very well. You have given me one more treasure than required for the information. What treasure of mine do you desire?" Azulle stated as he waved a wing and his treasures began to float through the air covered by Azulle's blue light.

There was a startlingly wide variety of objects from a jar with a living snake in it to books to jewlry like a necklace to even a strange set of fake teeth. However, Kavouri decided to go with his gut, it did not usually lead him wrong.

"The necklace please."

Azulle nodded and a flash of blue light appeared as the necklace teleported just above Kavouri's shadow and dropped in. Kavouri lifted it up with his shadow, it was a small chain which bore a rough blue sapphire in the shape of a flower. Kavouri knew little of the crafts, but he could tell that it was crafted with care and passion. However, it was not magical in the slightest.

Kavouri eyed Azulle skeptically, "What is this supposed to do?"

Azulle was inspecting Kavouri's treasures as he responded, "It is a dowry gift from one human to another. Your target will have a female companion traveling with him. Her mother went missing several years ago, eaten alive by a pack of deckals if I remember correctly. Half deer, half jackalope monstrosities. Very unpleasant to look at. Not that they know she is dead. You can use the treasure to lure her away from your target, or perhaps pose as her mother's killer and make her attack you. Use your imagination." Azulle informed Kavouri as he finished inspecting his treasures.

"Go and return to the herald of the Hidden Eyes. He will give you the information you bought from me. It is a map of the area of Cheos Sum which your target inhabits. It also shows where both you and your target is on the map. Now if you will excuse me. I have another customer to save from our noisy monkey friend and you have a herald to meet." He said as he took wing and flew towards the mountains of parchment in the distance.

Kavouri was already on his way back to the altar when he realized that Azulle had probably hired the monkey to stall customers until he was ready to deal with them. He swore he would get him back for that one day.

_

As Kavouri approached the altar, he noted that he could not feel the aura anymore. Most likely so that he could approach it. Kavouri had spent most of the trip thinking about the others that were apparently going to Azulle to buy information and what that might mean for his mission. He suspected that a servant of Yaj'elle would likely be aiding the human, but Azulle had made it sound as though other gods would be sending their would-be heralds as well. Kavouri did not know much about the missions that high servants took to become heralds, but he knew that the missions very rarely involved more than two gods' attentions.

Something was off about all of this, a feeling that only grew stronger as Kavouri saw the altar and found two heralds waiting for him, not just one. One was the herald Kavouri had met before, the one Azulle had called the herald of Hidden Eyes, but the other was one that he had only seen a couple times in his century's long life from afar. It was rare but every so often full out war would break out between the gods and the beast that stand before him, Tougu, herald of Pain Eternal, would lead Lyakors forces to battle.

His body was a twisted mess of bulging muscle that was torn and bleeding. He stood on 3 legs, one scaled, one feathery, and one covered in fur, and all three legs were dyed red by the blood that poured down his body. From there his body splits into two torsos connected by thick cords of flesh where their arms might have once been. One torso is corpse white and is home to a host of parasites that crawl around the holes in its rotting skin and cause the flesh to roil and undulate in a most gruesome fashion. The other torso resembles what you imagine humans to look like, if one had been put through a shredder. Its tan, olive skin drips with sweat and blood as muscles and organs twist underneath the torn skin. The necks of the two torsos rejoin in the head of a cyclops that, unlike the rest of the creature's disgusting body, is the very picture of health, adorned by a thick and oiled braid of midnight black hair that falls down its twin backs.

Kavouri has to resist shaking as he approached. Tougu is perhaps one of the oldest heralds of Lyakor, but unlike most heralds he was rumored to not have been born from his masters' emotions. Instead the rumors say he was once a god in his own right, a friend of Lyakor from before Kavouri's master had ever laid eyes upon Yaj'elle. When the two had discovered Yaj'elle they had both became smitten with her and competed with each other for her attention. Tougu lost and Lyakor mutilated his body and soul to make sure that Yaj'elle would never be interested in him. Then he enslaved him as a herald for good measure.

As far as Kavouri knew, Tougu does not remember his life before he lost to Lyakor, but he has heard the rumors and his cruelty and penchant for torturing the weak is well known. The stories of such torture refresh themselves in Kavouri's memory as his crimson eyes alight upon the scuttling crab and his misshaped body turned to face him. His lips curdled into a frown.

"This is all we have to represent us?"

The shadow of the other herald lazily snaked up the spire, "He does not look like much, I know. However his moment of revelation was quite…potent. He is the best we have"

Tougu's eyes narrowed as Kavouri came to a stop in front of him, "I should teach the new generations, if this is the best we can do."

Kavouri bristled at the insults but he wisely kept his mouth shut as Tougu stepped aside to speak to the other herald. They muttered to each other for a moment. Then a sharp pain pierced Kavouri's mind.

The herald of Hidden Eyes spoke, "I have placed the treasure you bought from Azulle into your mind myself. You will not lose it." The eyes drifted around the surroundings as it continued.

"The human world of Cheos Sum is bound by a pact between the gods. Creatures beyond the level of a servant are not allowed to enter and servants who do enter are forced to follow the rules and logic of the world. Your power as you know it will not function there. Only your treasure and your knowledge can be used."

A moment of silence was born as the herald tried to think of what it should say next. Kavouri took the chance to speak, "If I will truly be so weak, how will I gain the strength needed to slay the human?" he asked.

Tougu rolled his eyes, "You will need to study the other creatures of the realm to figure out how they get stronger. Emulate them. Surpass them." He ordered. The other herald seemed content to let him speak.

"Our missions in the realm of humans are never trivial, but this mission is far more critical than a maggot like you could ever know," ,his aura began to fill the air as his voice went lower, "Succeed and you will get your worthless "promotion". Fail and everything we have worked for might be undone."

Kavouri chittered nervously as Tougu stepped closer and closer to the now quivering crab, "You will KILL that piece of shit human or you will die trying. You will not be alone however, Nalka has joined us in this endeavor. When you arrive, seek his champion out and ally with them. Expect much resistance, not only Yaj'elle but the servants of other gods, both major and minor will stand in your way."

Kavouri opened his mouth to ask exactly why such a pathetic human is so damn important when he felt himself get ripped from reality and his senses faded.

_

The first thing Kavouri thought when he came to his senses was that he felt like he was dying. His body felt so much heavier than it normally does. Moving his arms and legs felt like he was straining against the might of Lyakor himself. His mind felt sluggish and stupid. His thoughts, while no less complex, moved so much slower than before. The ever present sweet hum of power in his body and soul is all but gone. The only thing he can feel is the treasure residing in his soul…and the map?

With an effort of will Kavouri activated the treasure and the map appeared in his mind.

Confused, he finally opened his eyes and saw a small scattering of trees in front of him. He turned, ever so slowly, and saw a desert full of sand dunes to his right and a slightly less sandy hills to his left. He surmised that the red star on the map must be his position.

All Kavouri wanted to do was sleep with how weak he felt, but he had work to do. So he gave himself a mental kick in the rear, and assessed his options.

Kavouri max health: 2930 -> 20 (+5 for being a large creature, +5 for earth aspected).

Kavouri's current health percentage out of max: 100%

Kavouri's battle power: 2460 -> 15 (+5 for being a large creature)

Kavouri's treasures:

The Jaw of a Wendigo: Grants Kavouri the ability to alter his size, either shrinking to half his size or growing half his size.

Eye of a Witch: One time use. Will give Kavouri a vision of his death, allowing him to avoid it once.

Jar of whispers: Allows Kavouri to whisper into the minds of others.

A necklace: allows Kavouri to force the targets girlfriend to fight. Can also be used to bait them with a high success rate.

A/N: First off thanks to @Wistways for the awesome map! Her work is always awesome. Next, thank you all for your patience in waiting for this update! I hope you enjoyed the update. Next i am going to work on the first LN chapter from the human's perspective. unsure if i'm going to place that here as a separate threadmark or in a separate thread itself. This first vote doesn't have a ton of options because Kavouri needs to recuperate from his arrival in this domain. Don't worry though, the options will open up soon.

What does Kavouri do? Actions will be taken in top to bottom order for the vote. Choose 2 actions

[] Go into the sand dunes (Average creature BP 200)

Small thing i thought it wouldnt hurt to clarify. The ??? Are area specific rewards.they will affect what techs kavouri can and will learn. The ??? Relates to the elements of each area. What they are is up to you to guess.

So, a couple of questions @DangerKitty , I notice that there is a size buff for our stats because of our large stature, will our Treasure "Jaw of a Wendigo" affect those stats when being used? For instance, reducing those advantages if we choose a smaller form, or increasing those advantages if we increase our size?

Secondly, I think going to the Sandy Hills is probably our best bet, the middle of the road option if you will. The creatures there will certainly be stronger than us, but, I think, not so strong that we won't be able to run away or intimidate them with our treasures. I'm not confident that the Wood area has anything we would want at the moment, other than easier prey, but the Sandy Hills feels like something that would have some decent earth attributes among them.

I think going to the desert is something we could do in the future, but they are four times stronger than the Sandy Hill area and almost 10x stronger than the wooded area, the strength level we are closest to. While they would be able to teach us how to be strong quickly, I feel the danger is not nearly worth it at this stage of our progression.

I intend to keep most fight mechanics behind screen as i am intending to make this quest a bit more narratively focused than my previous quest. However for your answer. It does but only vs specific enemies. Making yourself even larger also slows you down a bit. So it gives you advantage vs non agility/evasion types, but those types will actually be harder to deal with if you grow yourself vs them.

However the boost isnt terribly major as the wendigo jaw isnt really a combat item, kavouri has just had it long enough he can leverage it to its fullest extent.

Thanks for the big updoot DK, and in particular for giving us that dope map. (Also possibly thanks Wistways if you helped out on this one!)

Big smile at Kavouri's version of the scorpion fable. They aren't the only ones with natures, you know! Should have walked away, but that wouldn't have been scorpion of him.

Great pick on the necklace gang! Humans are often fond of those with whom they pairbond, though our researchers do not yet understand the phenomenon fully. Nonetheless this strikes me as something with a high probability of being useful in the future.

As far as options go, we are currently 100% health, so I don't think Resting as our first action is a good call.

It looks like forest creatures, presently the weakest we know about, have 25 BP on average, while we have 15. I don't like those numbers much, as ours is smaller and bigger is always better. So we need to become stronger.

We ourselves seem, with our earth element, like a creature at home within the sandy wastes. Creatures often (FOOLISHLY) are kind to those like themselves, and those in this world do not know of Kavouri, not of our endless hunger, nor our immunity to the weakness of honor.

Thus I propose the following plan. (Unofficial name, Bless my sudden and inevitable...)

[X] go to the sandy hills (Average creature BP 50)
-[X] learn how to get stronger from a creature of the of the sandy dunes (Medium risk, ??? reward)
--[X] Pledge eternal friendship (cross my pincer behind my back)

[X] go to the sandy hills (Average creature BP 50)
-[X] hunt for a creature ( high risk, medium reward)
--[X] Kill the one that taught me to get stronger, now that I am stronger than it.

[X] go to the sandy hills (Average creature BP 50)
-[X] learn how to get stronger from a creature of the of the sandy dunes (Medium risk, ??? reward)

[X] go to the forest (Average creature BP25)
-[X] hunt for a creature (Medium risk, low reward)

So here is my idea. Learn something from the Sandy Hill area and then go to the forest to use it and get some experience putting into practice what we learned. The ever-present cycle of learning and practicing. I prefer this method, because we might want to come back and learn more from the Sand Hill area, and that possibility might be blunted if we also start killing those we learn from... immediately.

[X] go to the forest (Average creature BP25)
-[X] learn how to get stronger from a creature of the forest (low risk risk, ??? reward) (counts as two actions)

This isn't really a plan that I can rightfully advocate for, but I'm curious why this takes two actions.

-[] learn how to get stronger from a creature of the forest (low risk risk, ??? reward)
@DangerKitty I don't think that second "risk" is supposed to be there?

[x] go to the forest (Average creature BP25)
-[x] learn how to get stronger from a creature of the forest (low risk, ??? reward)

I want to go with the low risk option for right now. Our character's current battle prowess is 15, which places him below average even for the weakest area nearby. I want to avoid risk as much as possible until we are strong enough to handle it.

It's hard to predict how the creatures will react, and I suspect that being from Lyakor won't do us any favors in that department. I'm not confident that we will be able to avoid a fight even if we try to be diplomatic (partly because this battle crab doesn't seem like the type to try all that hard), so I would rather go to the area where we have the best chance of winning or at least making enough of a mess to escape in the confusion.

We're below average even for the Forest, which means even something from there will probably have something to teach us. I would rather go there first and then see what we can figure out after we have a bit more information.

(edit) Oh; we get to pick 2 actions.

In that case, definitely stay in the safe zone, and I don't think repeating "learn how to get stronger" will accomplish much unless the first try fails the Diplomacy check.

[x] go to the forest (Average creature BP25)
-[x] hunt for a creature (Medium risk, low reward)

We're a jealousy CRAB. It's sand time!

*sighs*, we got the necklace, and it was a subtle item. No giant city-smashing powers for us... Oh hey, was that small combat bonus from the treasure small percentage, or small fixed amount compared to giant horror crab? The idea that we might have given up, like, +20 or more B.P., really puts into perspective how things might not always be clear-cut...
Still, the Necklace is totes powerful, especially with the whispers. We can totally pose as her mother's ghost seeking to be put to rest. Should be enough to get them out of the house and onto the road...

[x] Go into the sand dunes (Average creature BP 200)
-[x] learn how to get stronger from a creature of the desert (high risk, ??? reward)
--[x] Go small and whisper from a distance.
With the Jar of Whispers this should be relatively easy, and we are experienced at stealth, even if we lack the shadow powers that we might have come to rely upon. We also have the eye, so we should be willing to take risky options to speed our progress. Then again, there is no guarantee that the high risk information reward is actually better, it might be a bit of a trap option to teach us about fire, when what we want is rock or shadow knowledge...

[x] go to the forest (Average creature BP25)
-[x] hunt for a creature (Medium risk, low reward)
--[x] Go small, but become large once we catch something.
Still, as much as I talk a big game about taking risks, the eye is incredibly valuable, and we have no idea how combat works. Let's not rush into a fight with something three times our strength. Also, this is likely to be a regular activity, so buring the eye on it seems like something that will come up a lot. That said, these sorts of things usually have a pretty big advancement leap once you level up enough to get your abilities online.
Being big would give us a better view, but I figure we want to be underestimated, both as predator and prey.
What does Kavouri do? Actions will be taken in top to bottom order for the vote. Choose 2 actions
A reminder that we get to choose two things, as people have been choosing one.

Ah, well, if the double action was a mistake then I'll go for the (seemingly) obvious choice. We don't really know enough about the world to try to guess what the area specific rewards are so I'm making this on the premise that I assume sandy hills creatures would know more about how to get stronger than things in the weaker area.

Lull Ch. 1: A breaking home
Chapter 1:

It was a peaceful day in the town known as outcasts' rest when a mother gave birth to her son. He came out hale and healthy, crying as loudly as he could to prove it to the world. The town's hunter, her husband had, with the help of the butcher, provided a feast for their meagre household. It was a happy occasion, the many participants tossing around possible names for the child. The mother had sat with a small smile on her face and babe to her breast as the day went on. It was not until the sun was setting upon the horizon that she spoke.

"I have decided. His name will be Lull." She spoke with certainty. A silence descended upon the gathering as they digested her words.

"Why that name?" Her uncle had spoken with a confused, yet respectful voice.

"To remind him that there is always a storm coming. That good times are not forever." She said as she regarded the party with her solemn gaze.

No one challenger her, they were all exiles, outcasts or the children of such. Nevertheless, when they had arrived back in their homes they questioned why she would cast fear and not hope over her child's future. Though her husband remained similarly silent over her decision, he felt much the same.

_

Her child grew older, he played with the other children with the energy and vigor that only the young can manage. He grew strong and he grew bold. He loved his parents and they loved him. His father was a stoic man, a person of few words that held greater weight than the words of most. His mother kind and gentle, but wary of danger.

He enjoyed playing with the other children and adventuring into the forest, against his father's wishes. Though many children did that. He spent his days playing with the others and, when he grew strong enough, helping his father prepare his kills for the butcher with said butchers daughter. Lull was very close with Andrea, near everything he did involved her whenever possible. Many of the small village thought it sure that the two would marry when they matured. It was not long before more good news came however, Lull's parents were to have another child.

He was excited by this revelation, eager to have someone to boss around and take care of as his father did to him. Andrea, being very close to the family, was also very excited as she saw the coming child to almost be a sibling of her own.

Yet when the day arrived for the babe to come, everything fell apart. The pregnancy was difficult and took a great toll on the mother. Lull was forced to leave and play with the other kids. Instead he crept to the window of her room and listened to his mother's cries of pain and prayed to whatever god would listen. In the end however it was for naught, the mother survived but the babe was stillborn.

The house changed for the worse that day. Lull's family grieved for a week over the loss of the child. However while Lull and his father came to terms with the loss, the mother did not. She was inconsolable and slowly, day by painful day, withdrew in upon herself. Lull slowly came to be scared of his mother as she grew cold to him and more paranoid. A rift had formed in their family, one that Lull's father tried his best to fill.

Lull found his days filled with work as his father began to teach him his trade in earnest, even though Lull had not yet awoken his cultivation. He knew his father was trying to distract him from his crumbling household and yet no amount of studying or work could deafen his ears to his parents' arguments. Lull began to draw in upon himself, much to his father's dismay. He stopped interacting with the other children of the village, besides Andrea. Whom had remained a steadfast companion in such hard days. The fighting of his parents grew worse and worse, until one day it simply stopped.

The day Lull's mother left him and his village forever.
