TreeQuest: Magitech (Riot Quest)

[X][Action] Connect to Local Wildlife (Psychic)-bears
Also I cant recall whats the difference between a elder mind tree and a Communication Tree.

So... should we start teaching some magic to our animals? Like, Earth (and maybe Darkness) for our Moles, Life and Defense for... everything, that sorta thing? Maybe research Air or some related element for our fliers?

Also...

[][Minor Question] "Should we maybe give those traders something as an apology for getting dragged into our mess?"
-[] "What do you think we should give them? We don't really know what'd be appropriate."

Will make more comments as I process the really fun turn but I don't understand what happened to the Hellfire action as we got succeses but it seems like there wasn't even much of a description of what we did.
A chunk of the description is actually on the modified Research action that this action counted towards.

Do you think I ought to copy the text up?

What ate two of my Dice?
Um...
Good question...
Oh no! I accidentally added "Analyze Lake" and "Illusion Search" to Survival.
...
Fixed and chapter updated. Slight but noticeable improvements.

Also I cant recall whats the difference between a elder mind tree and a Communication Tree.
Elder Mind gets 4 dice for Comms and Research. Comms Tree gets 5 dice on Comms but only 2 on Research.

So... should we start teaching some magic to our animals? Like, Earth (and maybe Darkness) for our Moles, Life and Defense for... everything, that sorta thing? Maybe research Air or some related element for our fliers?
Write-in.
If you didn't have write-ins, I'd put in a Research action.
Addendum: Every one of your Creatures is eligible for Life Magic, and Arthur Scrat might be able to teach it to them...

[][Minor Question] "Should we maybe give those traders something as an apology for getting dragged into our mess?"
-[] "What do you think we should give them? We don't really know what'd be appropriate."
Good question. That's definitely not a bad idea, though saving two of their lives is a very nice gift in itself.

For other options...
Enchanted weapons?
Free lumber (effectively, money)?

[X][Action] Raise the Shield

[X][Focus] Raise the Shield
[X][Focus] Clean the Lake
[X][Focus] Light/Darkness Negacion (Magic Research)
[X][Focus] control the Wraith
[X][Focus] Research Elder Weather Trees (Magic Biology Research)

[X][Squirell] Have Arthur Scrat teach Life magic to the other animals. Such a fantastic insight MUST be shared!
[X][Deer] Keep watch over where those portals were
[X][Moles] Dig holes to better aerate the mycellium farms
[X][Beavers] Sponge poison from the lake using wood pulp
[X][Bees] Investigate the property damage to Newton village
[X][Ants] Hide spies inside of the traders' cart before they leave
[X][Wolves] Spar against the squirrel martial artists
[X][Corvid] Teach the eyeless Forest the benefits of camouflage
[X][Pollen] Poisonous
[X][Monster] Dire Bat & Lesser Wraith

"Well... it's kinda our fault their lives were in danger in the first place, so saving them falls under 'cleaning up our own mess' right? I'll see if I can convince some of the more... creative Trees to make them some magic swords."

QM, is something inline with the below possible/appropriate? I've not bothered to condense it into a shorter vote yet, 'cuz I want to be sure that I'm conveying my intention to you first. Also am tipsy-lazy:

Try to design a twig (or if need be, a tiny living plant that can fit comfortably in a tiny pouch in some soil a person's pocket/around their neck) that the bearer can use to draw upon the stored magic of the forest. The intention is to make something that allows Old Man Materson and any other trusted mages who have one (e.g. Arthur Scrat) to draw upon the magic/stored power of the forest for their own spells if needed without requiring a tree to spend dice giving them a boost like we did in the last fight.

Also, the twig/plant needs to be brought into the forest to be renewed every season or it dies, and the connection is explicitly designed in a way that it can be dropped at-will from the forest's end in case any foes get their hand on one.
----
Ehhh. That's a longer term plan anyway with a number of moving parts. In the meantime I think I'll focus on Life, then Death, then Life/Death. Or portals. Who knows!? Anyway, magical research tree is a go!

I hope the write in below is ok. It's a basic "Explore Life magic" with a few ides on where we might pick up bonuses.

[X] [Action] Learn about and practice Life magic. Maybe ask for some ants to practice on (or use non-forest plants) and ask Arthur Scrat and/or Old Man Materson for their perspective.
[X][Wolves] investigate the north portal site
[Focus] Clean the Lake
[Focus] Upgrade Empty Tree (Void) to elder
[Focus] Grow Unusual Lumber Tree
[Focus] Research Elder Weather Trees (Magic Biology Research)

I think the wolves have the best odds of winning a fight if they run into one while exploring
[X][Moles] Widen the Cave Entrance (8 dice)
The cave is nearby we should not have an unknown that close.
[X][Beavers] Explore Downstream

Is there a reason you don't want the Bat? Reminder: Its cost is negligible even before taming, and after it doesn't have one at all. It's practically a free unit!

Also, keep in mind that AutoFocus will, I assume, subtract from our available Focus votes (basically, the AutoFocus' "plan" auto-passes every turn until deactivated); thus, having 4 Focus votes plus an AutoFocus vote is probably something you shouldn't do.

[X][Action] Research Unusual Lumber that can be worn by a person to allow the Forest to better shield (or otherwise effect through Special Trees, like Empty, a theoretical Healing Tree and so on) said person.

[X][Focus] Clean the Lake
[X][Focus] Upgrade Empty Tree (Void) to elder
[X][Focus] Grow Unusual Lumber Tree
[X][Focus] Research Elder Weather Trees (Magic Biology Research)

[X][Squirrel] Explore Portal sites with Wolves.
[X][Wolves] Explore Portal sites with Squirrels.
[X][Corvids] Work to deepen the connection between one Raven (Huginn) and the Forest
[X][Pollen] Poisonous
[X][Monster] Dire Bat + 1 Lesser Wraith

The Action is to better shield the villagers, narrative reaction to the almost dying of a villager.
Clean the Lake Focus: Helps us learn immunity to poison, makes the lake safe for our companions again.
Upgraded Empty Tree: One Elder Empty is enough to have permanen veil, -33% chance to hit for our enemies.
Unusual Lumber Tree: Gives us a steady income of Unusual Lumber. A good trade good and i bet with some research we can find other uses.
Elder Weather Trees: Will probably give us more successes to better-weather-magic, more growth, yay! Also probably narratively useful for using weather as a weapon against large groups of enemies (restocking new aces up our sleeves for the next attack)

Explore Portals to see if there is anything interesting. Or dangerous.
Deeper connection with a Raven? In Norse and Germanic mythology Odin has 2 Raven companions (Huginn, Munin) who scout for him, also seeing how smart they already are i want to see what a contacted Raven is like. Also perfect start for general mage (not just learned-through-traumatic-experience, but general understanding and knowledge) companion. And cool.

Also I cant recall whats the difference between a elder mind tree and a Communication Tree.
Robinton already answered, but just in case it is useful to anyone else:
Page 1 has a list of all "discovered" player tree options so far.

[X][Minor Question] to any elder villager who could ask for us: "Do the monster parts have use as ingredient for our new Herbalist? Or As trade good for the Traders?"
[X][Minor Question] to any elder villager who could ask for us: "Will the Traders come back next year? If so, we may have to consider how to best store the lumber for them..."
[X][Minor Question] Old Man Materson: "Is there anything we can do to help with the healing? Any plants we could help you find so Marta (Herbalist) can make cures for the injured? "
So... should we start teaching some magic to our animals? Like, Earth (and maybe Darkness) for our Moles, Life and Defense for... everything, that sorta thing? Maybe research Air or some related element for our fliers?
I'm still for trying to get a deeper connection (analogue to Arthur Scrat as a deeper connected squirrel) with a Raven to get started with general mage companions.

Huh, interesting, similar to an idea I had reading the "Ian Gram getting clawed" part of the post.

Feel free to try. I don't think it will precisely work in the current format, and I suspect that you'll wind up having to create a Special Tree for letting others access Resources for spellcasting purposes. And even that won't give unlimited effects.

You have two ways of conveying Magical power:
1. Use Fire Magic to boost the Fire Within (Mitochondria).
2. Send power across your Mental Connections.

The second is less limited, but also suffers from being worse the weaker your Connection is. The people of Newton Village have only a mid-strength Connection; weaker than your Creatures, considerably weaker than Arthur Scrat, and incomparably weaker than the Connections between one Tree and the next.

I hope the write in below is ok. It's a basic "Explore Life magic" with a few ides on where we might pick up bonuses.

Perfectly valid write-in.

having 4 Focus votes plus an AutoFocus vote is probably something you shouldn't do.
If you don't think it will pass - or think there's a major chance it will but also a major chance it won't - then 4 Focus votes is fine.

[X][Minor Question] to any elder villager who could ask for us: "Do the monster parts have use as ingredient for our new Herbalist? Or As trade good for the Traders?"
Herbalist - definitely useful, though it'll be squicky work. She rolls up her sleeves and starts harvesting.
Traders - mostly no. They are nearly certain some bits would be valuable, but don't know which ones or the proper storage methods.

When one of them realizes that a pair of Ocumorts just got killed, they'll be extremely thankful for whatever guardians Newton Village has, and everyone will agree that "their eyes would be a fantastic reagent for anyone (e.g. the Herbalist) who knew how to use them."

[X][Minor Question] to any elder villager who could ask for us: "Will the Traders come back next year? If so, we may have to consider how to best store the lumber for them..."
Yes and yes.

Assuming they make it back alive and the lumber sells half as well as they're expecting.

The Traders actually want to know: Should they expect just as much lumber next year, or less, or more? They are fairly certain they sell twice this much and still not have saturated the market.

[X][Minor Question] Old Man Materson: "Is there anything we can do to help with the healing? Any plants we could help you find so Marta (Herbalist) can make cures for the injured?"
Materson: "Nobody's injured bad enough to need true 'mergency treatment, not anymore, but that's quite thoughtful of you. Care to broadcast that 'Fire Within' power across our village for a few days? Would be nice to heal quickly.
"Oh, and I think she might be low on... whatsit... Aranion. If you're watching, you can see which one she's talking about. Mild healing herb. If you can point out a bit of the stuff, and maybe make it grow like a weed, that'd probably be helpful - though more in the future than today."

Hm. Thoughts on getting to my end goal of adventurer/paladin tree? I figured that of course the place to start was where all such do, the heart, but, now I need to seriously consider my pattern more carefully and hold off evolving for now.

Just spitballing some things that I think might be nice to have, and might be purchasable via Unusual Limber - hopefully through our villager friends (Some items in this list are vastly more powerful than others, and many can not be bought while trying to keep vaguely under the radar - a powerful "Reclusive Plant Wizard" would not want or need much of the following):

Enchanted items that can be used by the forest or studied:

-items that pierce illusions; items of "See Invisibility" or "True Seeing" or other things.
-items that boost the growth of plants
- "+1" weapons
-items of "Resist Poison" or "Resist Disease"
-items of "Regeneration"
-potions of healing/resist poison/resist disease
-potions of plant growth
-living samples of all the ingredients for the potions on this list.
-items that boost "stats" [Int, Wis, Str ect]
-items that give bonuses to various defences, e.g. Magic Armour or resistance to Electric damage ect.
-items that provide resistance/immunity to various forms of mental attacks
-items that boost a mage's ability in an area, e.g. 'Staff of Water Magic'
-idk, like... 'drones'? As in remote controllable magic flying devices that allow the operator to see through it's visual sensors

-books on the magical fields of: Scrying/Divination, Teleportation/Portals, Basic Elemental magics, Healing, Low-end Time stuff (Haste/Slow type magics), Group Buffs (i.e. "Bless" from D&D), Techniques to resist 'Shield Piercing' and any available developed methods of beating Hell and Malice magics.
-books on stuff like anatomy, medicine, animal anatomy and veterinary medicine (at least for the animals we are in range of)

[I've been giving Solasta a go, so I'm in a D&D frame of mind; hence the format of these ideas)

Clearly, we need to move better until we can go full martial on the enemies. Then we need stronger trees so future giant snek not be a problem

So, some "Fire Within" is all that is needed for Mr Brown to get well soon? Lets see if we can spare some of it...
Old Man Materson largely ignores the fight for a few minutes in favor of stabilizing the poisoned Trader, Ron Brown. And it's a good thing he does, because even with his help, the Trader nearly dies in the first minute; it's only with significant medical attention, and an awful lot of Magic (large chunks from the Forest) that Ron's condition stabilizes. Even so, he's likely to need to tend carefully to his left arm and shoulder for some months.

Enchanted items that can be used by the forest or studied:
Examples of biting plants? (like a venus fly trap)
Would fit movement based offense. And we'd get to make "So you think our bark is worse than our bite?" puns in the next battle.
Clearly, we need to move better until we can go full martial on the enemies. Then we need stronger trees so future giant snek not be a problem
Everytree was kung-fu fighting!

Can also do one each, if you think bat would add interesting new options.
If it doesn't:
Why waste the resource points?
In my case, I see it as "it's basically free anyways, so why waste a free unit?" I mean, it's only a few successes before it stops consuming resources, and it can be used as a sort of "heavy scout/skirmisher" or as reference to calibrate our "detect monsters" work (as opposed to the Wraiths, which seem like they'd be more "detect construct" than anything).

Also, some bats live in forests, which means we can use this Dire Bat to help us find and connect to any Dire Bats that're already here. And hey, we might be able to get a few more memories about our Nemesis out of it while we're at it!

...Honestly, though, most of my desire for it stems from the whole "it's free, with only a tiny bit of work" thing, combined with "waste not, want not."
