[X] CA's dismount to
-[X] Engage fliers with you
[X] Divert course to
-[X] The enemy planes
[X] Fuck the enemy air, fuck them all.
[X] Piloting +1
Permission to fly? Haha, denied. As for Piloting, I figure we should start working on that as well considering our blueprints are nearly complete. What's the point of a Striker if you hardly know how to fly?
[X] Hey, that's a nice PT boat over there... (Fairies can man the boat)
-[X] Ask if the American Heavy Cruisers want in
--[X] Just...be in position to reinforce them if things go wrong. If everything goes well, we totally just went on a fishing trip, alright?
You take a look at the PT boat moored on the dock, specifically its armaments. 40mm Bofors on the rear, 2 duel .50s and a 20mm at the front, torpedoes are replaced by fuel tanks, no depth charges. Seems like the thing was built as a heavy transport. Of course, that's not counting the 3 Heavy Cruisers on station.
As the other 3 take their time to board, you note the Tenryuu is baffled as her jaw hangs down. "What. Are. You. Do-ing?" She asks aloofly while her sister just smiles and waves.
You do one more scan of the area before leaning in on your chair and turning to Hampton. "I recall saying fishing, Northampton. It might be unconventional, but I believe we have enough of a chance of catching a big one today."
"Sergeant..." You hold up a hand to stop Hampton from continuing. You heard the anger and disapproval in her voice, time to address it.
You take a breathe. "Shit's going to happen. I fucking know it. Hell, this weather is straight out of those fiction books. The ones with the shitty weather, rain, snow, that type of crap before battles, during battles, after them. Instincts is useful, you don't need proof to know that your life in endangered."
You hear your speakers stir up and Louisville comes on with a tinge of worry. "We only fought about 5 battles, Chester. And I'll be honest, I don't know if we're going to be fine here."
Hold up, hold up, hold up. So they've just blithely accepted the mortal man having magic of both a witch and ship-spirit nature? That's... kind of disappointing. No establishment, no character development, no questioning, just a single sentence to establish 'yep, they know'? That doesn't gel with me.
Then, for some reason, the radio starts quieting down. You're a bit muddled but then you watch something move in the distance. You scope it out with your binoculars and see several.
[X] CA's dismount to
-[X] Engage fliers with you
[X] Divert course to
-[X] The enemy planes
[X] Fuck the enemy air, fuck them all.
[X] Piloting +1
"Girls, can I get a confirmation on the objects at about 350, 340 degrees?" You flatly ask over the radio. You check the planes again to make sure your eyesight isn't playing with you.
Louisville answers with worry. "That's, that's not friendly."
You nod to yourself and reach for the headset. "Roger. Get off here and engage those aircraft. We will not let them get close to Houshou's group until their scrap is done. Get it done."
"Aye aye, Sir!" They reply with a mix of enthusiasm and dread. You hear the girls make contact on the water and they appear within your vision as the boat continues it's heading. You turn around to see that one of your fairies have already taken the helm and gives you a thumbs up.
You then switch radio frequencies to Houshou and her squadron. "Houshou, you have enemy aircraft coming from your north, northwest. Possibly more enemy contacts from that direction. Watch yourself. Out." You switch channels and motion your helmsman to do a U-turn. As the maneuver starts, you pick up the chatter from the heavy cruisers.
"-radar?" Can't tell who it is.
Chester's voice comes up but there's an annoying low buzzing. "I don't know, Louisville. They're not coming up on my radar either. Ham, is it the same with you?"
N.Hampton's voice is much the same. "They're not on mine either. Regardless, they're in our firing range. Prepare to engage with AA fire."
You switch the broadcast again, this time to the Witch's castle. "Urgent report. Additional abyssal enemies in the area of Houshou's squadron. Identified as aircraft, does anyone read." After a minute passes, there's still no noise from the other end. Jamming or interference, huh. You swap radio channels so that Houshou's team and the Heavy Cruisers can hear you. "Urgent report to everyone. We are being jammed by the enemy. Radar and radio are ineffective, we are cut off from the outside. Over."
There's the sound of explosions in the background of someone replying. You don't figure it out that it's Houshou till you hear her shout some orders and gasp for breathe. "This is Houshou, understood. I won't ask why you're here Sergeant, but thank you."
"This is Northampton, roger transmission. Out. FIRE!" You see the girls fire their version of the 20.3cm cannon and the smallish shock waves it makes on the water. The rounds fly towards the formation of the enemy airplanes and explode midair, causing the enemy to break formation. You see that 3 of them splash while the others start weaving and zigzagging around as evasive maneuvers.
The N.Hampton cruisers fire off a couple more rounds, downing additional enemies before you hear the whistle of enemy artillery. Spouts of seawater appear around the heavy cruisers. The girls cuss on the radio while you try to figure out where the shots came from. It doesn't take long when you see that they're close, probably too close in Navy terms.
You scope them out and check the compass before going for the radio. "I have 4 enemies at 28 and 39 degrees, north, northeast. Hampton's, they're yours, over."
"You want us to change targets, Sergeant?" Louisville's voice is cracked with heavy static but is audible. Jamming's getting stronger? Or are we getting closer to the source?
"I say again. Engage those hostile ships, out." You see the girls change course, Chester and Louisville saluting you off. Helmsman, cut engine and do another U-turn. I want the 40 to greet them. The moment I fire, go full throttle.
Aye aye!
You feel the boat turn and slow down while you load a clip in. You make sure the safety is off and rotate the gun towards the enemy.
Roll 1d100: 95.
The world around you start to slow down, something changes inside you. Your heart beats faster, faster and faster, then it slows down. After taking a deep breathe, your heart rate goes back to normal and you have malicious smirk. The enemy is so fucked now. The boat finally stops moving and rocks gently from the waves, Prefect firing position.
The enemy is just out of effective range so you patiently wait by whispering to yourself. "My aim is true. My eye is truth. My trigger is right. On. Target. Permission to kill." You press the firing pedal when you see the Abyss planes come right on the edge of your gun's circle sight. You reload, Shame it only holds 4 rounds, and continue to pour rounds right into their faces as the Helmsman punches it.
By the time you load the 5th clip, you already wasted their remaining wing. Next target. You look left and right to see water erupt from both Houshou and the American cruiser's fight, none of which is close to you. Your survey ends as the PT boats start swerving madly left and right, physics pulling you to one side then another. You manage to look up to see more planes moving in the same direction as you while being at a higher altitude. A group of 5 break off and dive squarely towards you.
Enemy accuracy roll 1d100:4, critical failure.
The enemy, uh, you saw 2 of them roll right into the sea while the other 3 fire their guns, completely missing you and the boat. You reply with accurate fire 40mms and send them along to a water explosion with their fiends. You don't get a chance to laugh at their failure before turning your attention to the +30 planes above you. You change the gun's elevation and aim it just ahead of the lead plane.
Accuracy 1d100:27+7=34 (No marksman bonus due to range, different speeds between you and the target, and lack of artillery training-Gun skill)
You fire 4 rounds and see that they're not good enough. They are just barely close enough to make them detonate but it's mostly superficial damage.
Adjustment 1d100:57+7=64
This time you're on target, with some of them turning back or falling right out of the sky. It however, doesn't dent much of their numbers when they begin to diving run. You order the navigator to adjust direction so you can depress the 40mm at the enemy and get a few more shots in. Then you look at your ammo box to see that it's empty. That's not good.
You trigger the safety and leave the gun to go to the bow of the ship. You slowly walk towards the 20mm station and take the gunner's spot to engage more hostile targets.
Turns out, it was unnecessary as the destroyers and cruisers' cannons light up the sky. The planes that weren't downed by their fire would be jumped by Houshou's planes. It ends moments later as the enemy survivors fly off back to where ever they came from and the girls start moving towards your position.
Once you see that everyone is close enough, you have the helmsman stop the boat. You get off of the 20mm and stand on the tip of the bow. You eye each girl to check their condition. It seems that Houshou had taken the most damage out of all of them as there's numerous black marks on her clothes and skin. The others are practically untouched, tired, but fine.
They girls form up and surround you, as if expecting a speech. You take a look at the far away smoke rising off of the dead abyss ships things. "Get on board and let's get out of here." Then it starts to rain.
---
---
You sit back on the Bofors as Lieutenant Houshou takes account of everything. Louisville takes the wheel again as the light rain hits the boat and everyone on it. You eavesdrop on the conversation and figured out their status.
Houshou's taken moderate damage, the most of out all of them. Next, would be a tie with Northampton and Mutsuki but they only took minor rig damage. Last would be Fubuki and Kisaragi, who pretty much just got their paint scratched. No one else was hurt during the encounter, that's pretty good.
Houshou and some of the others come over to offer their thanks but you just wave them off and keep watch on the empty ocean.
Eventually N.Hampton comes over to you. "Sergeant, a word?" Before you say a word or make a move, she reaches for your shirt collar and sticks her hand down, touching your chest.
What to do? [] Fucking stop her, she's being rude. [] Ask why she's doing it. [] Don't care, don't have the energy to protest. [] Write-in
Is she questioning our manhood? I think she's questioning our manhood.
[X] I assure you, if you are wondering, I am indeed a man. Have been for my entire life. If you'd prefer to double check, it'll have to wait for tonight.

... that's one way to react to John having magic. Guess it's better than an impromptu cup check, although Wilcke might feel like doing one given that we went cowboy-ing off on our own...

So I've determined that people fall into one of three groups regarding John. Those that think he's awesome, mostly the kids. Those that understand that he's something unique and want to learn as much as possible about him, mostly the higher ups in the know and arguably Mio. Those that don't even what the fuck, like Northampton. Unfortunately for the latter, John Arma Browning is a man that has run out of a lifetime supply of fucks to give, so they'll have to look elsewhere.

(Already started on Assure, not like it makes a giant difference.)
"I assure you, if you are wondering, I am indeed a man. Have been for my entire life. If you'd prefer to double check, it'll have to wait for tonight." You retort without any emotion. N.Hampton blushes profoundly but your statement doesn't seem to dissuade her from feeling you up.
"Sis!? What are you doing!? What is wrong with you!?" Chester, who was at the bow of the ship, makes her way to the rear. She passes the others who are either frozen or trying to cover their eyes with their hands but the leave gaps so they can still see.
Hampton then unbuckles your belt and... lifts your pants up and looks down. You stare at the Bofors in the meantime, Yeah, gonna wait first.
"Eeeeeehhhh!"
"Ara ara."
"What the-poi!?"
"Hentai!"
Chester goes tomato red and stutters. "S-sister!? W-what the hell?"
Hampton lets go of your lower garments to takes a few steps, grabs her younger sister by the shoulder and start shaking her violently. "He's a man! He-is-a-man!"
"We know that!"Chester puts her hands on Hampton to stop her from rattling her any further.
"But he has magic! And fairies! And a ****! How is that possible!?" Hampton wails and hugs her sister. "Why are there so many unanswered questions?"
"Sis, you need to calm down! I mean I have questions too, but you don't need to invade his privacy! If you were going to strip him, then let me in on it next time."
I'm going to pretend I didn't hear that. "Hey, about the magic thing. I don't have a clue, okay? I was born with it and now I'm using it. That's the extent of my knowledge on the subject."
"Hammy, calm down. Sarge doesn't know anymore about magic than we do. You don't need to start breaking things now. Not like before." Chester places her older sister in the empty chair across from you. Hampton doesn't cry or make any noise but stays still while Chester hugs her.
What are ship girls? Not like I actually know the answer.
The only noise is the rain and the PT boat's engines, none of the other girls make a sound during the travel back to base. They do stare at you though, from time to time, either with curiosity or caution.
---
---
The boat docks, the girls get out, you take off the life jacket and helmet, and join everyone lined up in front of Commander Wilcke and Major Sakamoto in the hangar.
She eyes you in anger before taking a look at the others, her expression softening. "The injured should get treatment as soon as possible. We'll talk about this later, Houshou." Houshou and her girls go off to do their thing, leaving their equipment piled up together. As they leave, you notice that fairies come out to do repairs and maintenance on their rigs. "Sergeant. Did you have permission to leave?"
"Negative." You see a small frown develop on her face when you answer.
"Did you drag the other three with you?" Sakamoto asks while not looking at you, her face emotionless.
The three heavy cruisers open their mouths to make a counter but you answer before them. "Yes."
Minna paces in front of you, the steps are light but you swear that if she could, she'd kick you. "Three days, solitary confinement. You are only allowed out with an escort to the mess hall, to use the bathroom, or if there's an emergency. You are not allowed to speak unless it is to me, Sakamoto, or Houshou. Go."
"Wilco." You walk towards your quarters, noticing that the Panzer crew and some other Witches are staring from behind the tank.
---
---
You dry yourself, change your clothes, and body slam your bed, in that order. The "BBBBAAAAAWWWWWWW." was an extra step as you lay on your stomach. The fairies do some stretches before joining you on the bed, rolling around on your left.
For the rest of the day, you rested in your room without anyone coming to check on you. Not like the door's locked for you, but there's bells and other noise makers that might attract attention, guess Minna's really pissed. At least the CA's won't take the fall so that's fine by you.
Anyway, you finished your blueprints, shame that you can't make the damn thing. (Challenge-Science:65. Mechanical:65. Magic:50. Progress per day, based on current stats, 1% for 6 hours of work)
But you do commend your fairies for bringing food to your room since no one came. Talented girls. And so you slept to the next day.

January 17th, 1943.
You wake up to knocking at ~5:00 AM. Damn, was gonna sleep in. You get up and put on your pants before opening the door. "Conrad?"
"Yo. Morning paratrooper." Behind him are the dismantle sound crap all piled up. "I got some news to tell you."
Your brain starts processing on what to do. Turns out the answer was simple. "Uh, can you make it quick?"
"Sure." He passes you a piece of paper before coming in.
So long story, which it wasn't, bureaucracy is slow, probably 3 to 6 more days for everything to finish. The OSS, however, stationed in the U.K. really want you to get to work, or at least do some training but it's up to you. If do want to leave, he'll handle the negotiations with the Commanding Ofiicer.
When you mentioned your Striker blueprints, Conrad just stared laughing, almost uncontrollably. He did take a look and said that it's possible for the OSS to make it, 1 month at the minimum, 2 moths for sure. But, he adds, the engineers here might be to do a better job, since they're experienced. In either case, the fittings can be done when you and the Striker are in one place, so the choice is yours.
But what do you want to do? (Striker will go with whatever you choose
[] Stay here (3 days pass, random stat boosts, you have to convince Minna to build your Striker, with or without help.)
[] OSS training (Time pass, additional choices in another post.)
-[] 1 month training
-[] 2 month training
[X] Stay here (3 days pass, random stat boosts, you have to convince Minna to build your Striker, with or without help.)
A month or two without shipgirl/Witch/Tankery shenanigans? Pass.
Now... since Yuubari isn't among the shipgirls, we'll have to ask someone from the Witches to help out with Striker construction. If Minna approve- nah, even if she doesn't approve, we're getting wings.
