To Struggle and Strive: The Combined Syndicates of America in 1932. A Kaiserreich Quest

[] [BILL] Release it immediately, in the hopes of it getting passed before the election
[] [BILL] Release it in October, in the hopes of using it to drive those neutral on you into your camp for the election.
[] [BILL] Release it after the election, in the hopes of the probable failures of the bill damaging the government's support and legitimacy.
We need to beat the Feds to the punch, so no after. I say now. This helps avoid the look of us only doing this to boost votes for us in the election, which might push some voters away.

[] [CULTURE] Dorothea Lange is a photographer and revolutionary. Uninterested in artistic merit, she focuses on using cultural means to enact social and economic change, citing her efforts as part of several rural propaganda-centered pushes as proof of her ideas.
[] [CULTURE] Carl Hoeckner is an artist descended from a long line of artists. He is a proponent of the use of art to change the way people think. He lobbied for America to remain neutral during the Weltkrieg out of pacifist beliefs, but he has begun radicalizing rapidly as the Long Depression takes its toll.
[] [CULTURE] Rockwell Kent is a painter, writer, and lover of nature. Temperate and even-keeled by nature, he still recognizes that socialism is the only way forward for America.
[] [CULTURE] Thomas Mooney was one of the many men and women rescued from unjust imprisonment by the California Revolutionary Front, an affiliate of the Red Army Faction. Before his arrest and after his escape, he wrote and edited many newspapers and magazines, and recently published several short stories about workers in a nameless city struggling against their bosses. Schenck admires his writing, while he admires Schenck.
[] [CULTURE] Woody Guthrie is a moderately well-known songwriter and singer. Wandering from Oklahoma to California then to New York, he wrote songs and held performances about the lives of working-class individuals, especially farmers, ranchers, and farmworkers.
Its a lot easier to reach said farmers, ranchers, and farmworkers with Radio then other methods. Guthrie is therefor the most likely to reach them.

[] [COMM] Let them handle things themselves. No investment required, will have 1 Influence.
[] [COMM] Provide some backing to smooth their path. 1 Influence invested, will have 2 Influence.
[] [COMM] The radio and telegraph will be vital, and the Office has your full confidence. 2 Influence invested, will have 4 Influence.
Between 1861-1865, one of the single most useful tools of the Union was the Telegraph, allowing commanders and their superiors to be kept away of events hours or even days march away within half an hour or sooner. Lincoln in fact often had a better idea of the actual state of the front line in the East then most his actual Generals and could and would make use of this to order his generals to push into areas with seemingly no value to fighting the Confeds because a Confed Army was in that area engaged with another Union force.

It is now 1934. We now have technology that allows for even greater ability to coordinate. Civil War WILL COME. We MUST have confidence in in the Office. Failure to have it implies we do not have confidence in the Revolution itself. We are not some cooky Pelleyist who believes they will win because God says they will save them from the hurricane! God sent those fools a chance to save themselves by asking them to evacuate to higher ground and sending in assistance from local firefighters and coast guard. They spat at those offers. And like God asking a good christian to use their brain when faced with such a threat, We must make sure we are ready for revolution. We must be ready to mobilize and fight the moment the Macarthurites strike to destroy American Democracy, For yes my comrades, I believe that Macarthur is far worse than a mere counter-revolutionary. He is the American Caeser: A Dictator In Waiting. He cares not for even the ideal of American Democracy Olson's Coalition believes in. And that will not be possible without Telegraphs ready and poised to issue mobilization orders to the Red Army and to the People's Militias!

The rest I dont exactly know what choice to take. BTW, imagine the above as someone in the party's argument in-universe for why they favor full confidence. Also, for those wondering why im insulting Trotsky, its because in KR Trotsky is disliked by Socialists for being viewed as the reason the Reds lost.

Okay, so, uhh, how much Influence can we actually afford to invest into stuff this turn?

Okay, so, uhh, how much Influence can we actually afford to invest into stuff this turn?

We can afford to put 3 for Culture, 2 for Radios, and Education costs us 1.

That's a total cost of 6, and we want to spend/invest 8 within the next few turns. That saves two to add to the Procurement Committee next turn, hitting 8 investments and fulfilling the following mandate.

You are being accused of overbearing, excessive power by many who fear you becoming a Napoleon or some other form of tyrant. However, they also seem to recognize that despite your immense popularity, despite the dedicated support of the Red Guards, despite your influence...you do not desire such a thing. Even so, they are cautious enough to push you to decentralize power a little, to add a few offices that will be staffed by their supporters and help them influence the way things happen. Spend a net total of 8 Influence on new subordinates within 3 months. (From the Syndicalists, the IWW MA, and the IWW MM. ++Support from both factions of the IWW, ++Relations with the Syndicalists, all Union and Militant actions have a temporarily reduced DC, -Support with the TUUL, the ASA, and the Red Grange, -Relations with the Orthodox if completed. +++Support from the TUUL, the ASA, and the Red Grange, +++Relations with the Orthodox, --Support from both factions of the IWW, ---Relations with the Syndicalists if failed.)

I would actually quite like to release the bill immediately instead of trying to hold it for the election season. Aside from not wanting to be seen as pushing it merely for electoral purposes, I want to beat the feds to the punch so that they are the ones forced to react to our bill right away. As for the culture committee, honestly I'd much rather have Rockwell Kent than Thomas Mooney. I'm a bit wary of his mutual admiration with Schenk to be honest.

[X] [JUDICIAL] The addition of greater popular participation in the judicial process

I'll wait for the interviews before I vote for the education head.

Edit: Given that he's not terrible, and we don't really have the resources to sink into fighting for radical changes to the education, I'm voting for Brophy.

[] [EDU] Accept Brophy. He has the background and the skills to be good at his job, even if he is more socially conservative than many would prefer. His backing is immense, and he has had ample time to acquire favors and political capital. He aims to preserve local influences in education and re-develop the existing school system. He also wants to expand it to better support disadvantaged areas. (Minor losses of support from socially radical factions, the Education Committee will have 3 Influence, significant gains in support from socially conservative factions, temporary bonuses, the Education Committee will have +10 to its actions)

Replacing Lange with Kent because I want more conservationism/environmentalism in our socialism. Waiting on the Q&A for education.

Temporaru Threadmark: Questions Answered
Questions for Brophy:

Q1: What is your view on corporal punishment in schools?

Q2: What is the biggest challenge you feel teachers face, and how do you think you would solve it?

Q3: What is your feeling about religious education or content in public schooling?

Q4: How would you propose to deal with the undereducation that many women and racial minorities face, even when not segregated?

Q5: In what ways do you believe schools should prepare children for participation in true (workers') democracy?

Q6: How should we deal with the large rural-urban gap in school funding and quality?

Q7: What are some flaws with the current form of history education, and how would you change them?

1. It's not something that should be used except as an absolute last resort. If a boy was repeatedly bullying another, for instance.
2. I think the biggest challenge teachers face is the lack of support. There aren't enough of them, they aren't paid well enough, and so many classrooms are lacking in supplies.
3. Teachers should not share or impose their religious beliefs.
4. I think women and minorities such as Negroes should be given support to help educate themselves, such as preferential access to night classes for adults.
5. I think there should be a slow increase in their autonomy, starting with things like voting when they should have their breaks as young children, to being responsible for organizing and leading classroom activities as youths, with colleges being heavily student-controlled.
6. I think there needs to be major investments in rural schools, especially by encouraging teachers to work at them, possibly assigning some teachers to them by lottery. I'd also try and support rural workers so that farmers don't need their children helping them for long hours and improve rural transport to make it easier to get to school.
7. It's overly idealistic, great-man focused, and neglects major elements of American history that are unpleasant for the ruling classes to face such as the mistreatment of the Indians.

Questions for Healey:

Q1: What is the biggest challenge you feel teachers face, and how do you think you would solve it?

Q2: What is the biggest structural flaw of the way education is organized today, and how would you fix it?

Q4: How would you propose to deal with the undereducation that many women and racial minorities face, even when not segregated?

Q5: In what ways do you believe schools should prepare children for participation in true (workers') democracy?

Q6: How should we deal with the large rural-urban gap in school funding and quality?

Q7: There is opposition to your candidacy to some degree, how would you deal with the more limited ability to implement your full vision if you were selected?

1. I think teachers aren't given the tools or training they need to do more than the bare minimum. The way teachers are taught must be transformed, and far greater financial and material resources should be put towards education.
2. The entire system is set up to crush individuality, creativity, and the democratic spirit. The entire schooling system needs to be overhauled.
4. I would greatly increase the educational options and support they have available, including creating a variety of initiatives to help reduce discrimination in education and providing extra support to schools with high numbers of women and minorities.
5. From the very beginning, children should have opportunities to help shape their education and put the theory of democracy in action. I also believe there should be significant ties across age groups in schools, with older students helping tutor younger ones.
6. Invest more In rural schools so that they are more attractive to teachers.
7. As best I can. I think my priorities would be on bettering the way teachers are taught first.

Elected judges is kind of an awkward middle ground, is the "greater popular representation" option for the judiciary a path to outright popular tribunals?

It could be.

Feel free to ask any other questions, I will add them to this post.

I'm also leery of Mooney's mutual respect for Schenk, and Brophy's good enough in terms of what he wants to change for now, and he gives us support from the social conservatives who we've been displeasing with all of our other radical reforms.

Unsure about releasing bill now vs October, though I'm somewhat leaning for now just to guarantee that it comes out before the Feds' Big Bill.

I am sympathetic to folks who worry about putting someone sympathetic to Schenk in a position of influence...

[X] [CULTURE] Thomas Mooney was one of the many men and women rescued from unjust imprisonment by the California Revolutionary Front, an affiliate of the Red Army Faction. Before his arrest and after his escape, he wrote and edited many newspapers and magazines, and recently published several short stories about workers in a nameless city struggling against their bosses. Schenck admires his writing, while he admires Schenck.
[X] [CULTURE] Woody Guthrie is a moderately well-known songwriter and singer. Wandering from Oklahoma to California then to New York, he wrote songs and held performances about the lives of working-class individuals, especially farmers, ranchers, and farmworkers.

[X] [COMM] The radio and telegraph will be vital, and the Office has your full confidence. 2 Influence invested, will have 4 Influence.

[X] [EDU] Accept Brophy.

[X] [JUDICIAL] Modifications to jury selection to help ensure that it is truly of the defendant's peers.

[X] [CULTURE] Rockwell Kent is a painter, writer, and lover of nature. Temperate and even-keeled by nature, he still recognizes that socialism is the only way forward for America.

The only way to ensure we'll pre-empt the Big Bill is to release the Bigger Bill as soon as possible. It's very important politically that we set the tone on the conversation around either bill because that will naturally frame how it's discussed in the media, and the best way to do that is to get our message out first.

As for Brophy, he's... okay, I guess. The party's social conservatives need a bone thrown to them every once in a while or they'll start stirring up trouble and Brophy is inoffensive enough that I'm willing to tolerate his appointment. In any case, after the revolution is won, we can revisit a lot of things and hopefully we'll have the space politically to include Healey in that process.
