Getting some early research boosters really helps pick up tech in other areas. Also given we are trying to salvage a ship that is likely more advanced than ours the narrative of having better scientific understanding to go with our salvage attempts would be nice.

Having decided to salvage the derelict alien ship, you dispatch a major expedition in the spring of 2207 that spends the next several years conducting checks with unmanned drones before actually beginning efforts to bring it up. This proves easier than expected, as even with the corrosion and damage it only needs some structural reinforcement and an injection of tritium slush into one of the intact fuel stores. The reactor activates and the ship takes off under its own power. You are surprised to find the drone ship is controlled by an autonomous AI, albeit one which has taken substantial damage. Apparently the ship has been there much longer than you had thought, well over a thousand years, having previously used deflector shields to prevent the corrosion reaching critical areas before accumulated damage took its toll. Alas, it has no information about its makers or anything other than using the ship effectively, and while it is happy to serve you it objects to any attempts at reverse engineering. Not an ideal solution but…well, the technology must be at least 50 years ahead, maybe more. Best not look a gift horse in the mouth, especially if the horse can get offended.
As your science vessels continue to map the nearby hyperlanes it becomes increasingly apparent that mankind is far from the first interstellar species, as surrounding systems are positively littered with evidence of life. You find ancient ruins on a frozen in Procyon, one destroyed by nuclear weapons exchanged between different parts of the same planet. Around Barnard's Star is a planetoid scored by ancient weapon fire. As you advance out into further systems the galaxy continues to surprise with the commonality of habitable worlds and evidence of past habitable worlds. Then you enter the Dargan system and encounter what can only be described as hostile alien megafauna. Massive crystalline entities, electrical impulses flickering through bodies as large as skyscrapers. The sheer quantity of them is staggering, multiple packs seeming to drift idly through the system. You won't be sneaking past that any time soon. It is a shame you cannot ignore them, as they act aggressively towards approaching ships. There is a habitable planet in the system - perhaps where they evolved or were created? There would need to be substantial investment in this rather sudden issue to try and find a way to pacify them, one that may derail the projections of other research programs.
[ ] Divert funding from other projects to try and co-exist with the Crystalline Entities.
[ ] Leave the creatures be.
Back home there has been plenty of activity thanks to the discoveries and resources found outside Sol. New industrial advances have substantially improved the current methods of energy generation, making fusion reactors cheaper and more compact. Mining drones are now capable of retrieving material from near the crust-mantle boundary, substantially improving yields. Even agriculture has benefited from seeds spliced with genes from Alpha Centauri's plantlife. Which of course is the main topic on everybody's lips - the Alpha Centauri Colony Expedition is due to launch any day, and with it the hopes for a permanent settlement outside of the solar system. It will be a momentous occasion, and enthusiasm among the younger population is particularly high, especially with those who have benefited from the new polytechnic education system that has been rolled out worldwide.
Research Focus (Pick One)
[ ] INDUSTRIAL: Improve industrial output with enhanced processes and new technologies.
[ ] DISCOVERY: Expand scientific capabilities by developing new techniques and methods to analyse new discoveries.
[ ] MILITARY: Develop new weapons and defenses to deal with threats both natural and artificial. .
[ ] IMPLEMENT: Turn cutting-edge science into widely available technology for the public sector.
Social Priority (Pick One)
[ ] Overhaul the current welfare system and establish clear baselines of income for all working-age individuals, regardless of profession.
[ ] Reform the calendar year to include holidays and celebrations that commemorate the losses of the past and the spirit of human togetherness.
[ ] Divert subsidies from supporting the services economy to fund more research programs instead.
If this anything like Stellaris the game, we should be able to do the "Co-Exist" Path anytime we want.
As long as no one kills the Entities within that time.
But killing them does give us research into certain weapons programs.
However, considering we are a Pacifist Civ, it may piss off our people if the first thing we do when encountering interstellar life is shoot at it. Even if it is hostile.

Not necessarily. Humanity was born into the hunting of their own terrestrial megafauna, which will temper any concern about killing the crystals. While the public may not be overly pleased, I doubt they'll be actively pissed if we decide we don't like having hostile, strange creatures 'next door' in stellar terms, especially if we find other colonies of them that indicates they're not just a system-unique phenomenon.

Agreed, even many pacifists in real life are just against human on human violence, hunting or clearing the wildlife doesn't always matter to many flavors of pacifist.
If I'm not mistaken, coexistence has its own bonus research. Something related to energy.

I rather suspect that the issue whether hunting the stellar wildlife in question is ethical is currently purely academic, as they are likely capable of casually wiping out our entire fleet (not that we have much of one yet).
For now, let's just avoid them. Later we can figure out how to peacefully coexist, but for now we have more urgent priorities.
[X] Leave the creatures be.
Anyway..
[X] DISCOVERY: Expand scientific capabilities by developing new techniques and methods to analyse new discoveries.
This makes sense - we're in the exploration phase, when the galaxy is still largely unclaimed and waiting to be explored. Now is the time for discovery and collecting new data.
[X] Overhaul the current welfare system and establish clear baselines of income for all working-age individuals, regardless of profession.
The civilian economy is booming, so presumably it would be a good time for something like this.
