I don't usually do this, but my plan was no matter who got voted on to iron out a lot of niggling issues we've had in-character with them without a "what do you ask" prompt. So if there's something you wanna point out you've been quiet on, or lend support to an idea to talk to them about, you've got about an hour for me to take it under advisement.

Well if you're taking suggestions. While I don't think hammering home how shit this plan was would be helpful (no matter how cathartic it would be for me), I feel like Vilina has more than earned an actual explanation as to what was actually happening tonight. Why was Gwen so obsessed with this case? If Vilina feels like pushing that to an explanation of what she saw in Gwen's memories then that too, but that's a sensitive subject and to be honest prying about something we accidentally saw because we brought in a telepath might be pretty sketch behavior.

Worth noting that even if we don't bring up the memories directly, we still saw that Gwen & Peter have some sort of out-of-costume history from their in-person interactions. So we can more safely ask like "why did you react so strongly to Spider-man being Peter" even if we politely ignore the memory deluge itself.

009 - When First We Practice To Deceive M
Winner: Gwen
Number of voters: 6

The next morning would ordinarily be an exercise morning... but Gwen isn't there when you arrive in the gym. You wait a bit and start your routine, jogging on the treadmill and keeping your head on a swivel for her entrance. You wonder if she's just late... but she doesn't show at all. Maybe she was too tired from last night and her injury. Maybe she overslept. Maybe she got brought in to talk about the case, but... if that's what happened they likely would've contacted all of you. Maybe she sensed you wanted to talk to her and it wasn't going to be exactly... sunshine and daisies. You get through your jog and check your phone. There's still a while until your first class. Hopefully enough to talk to Gwen... if not... screw it; you'll be late. Or miss. Missing one class isn't going to kill you, and you're tired of the things your mind is doing with what happened last night. The worst case scenarios it's dreaming up and the horrible consequences it's imagining. You find Gwen in the hall outside her room, just leaving. She's wearing jeans, teal sneakers, and a soft black tank, her white bandages contrasting sharply with the top. Her hair is restrained, as usual, by a black headband. From beneath her fringe, she looks up at you with guilty eyes.

"Oh, uh... hey."

"Hey," you nod. "You weren't at the gym."

"Yeah, I was, uh..." she's having a hard time meeting your gaze. "Not there," she admits.

"We should talk. About last night." Usually you phrase it as a question, to allow someone an opportunity to say no. Today you do not.

"Yeah, uh... not here. Let's... go into my room." Once again, you follow her through the common room of her dorm, her squad absent and likely attending classes, then back into her bedroom. Everything is fairly untouched from the last time you were here, save a few pairs of clothes and a plastic bag full of her bloody costume waiting to be taken in for repairs and cleaning. She sits on the bed, sighing, and still avoiding your eyes. "So, uh... what did... where did you wanna start?"

"Uh, important stuff first." You feel weird standing. Not sure what to do with your hands. Putting them akimbo at your hips seems too intimidating, but you feel all slouchy just standing there. You wish you were wearing a hoodie. Then you'd have pockets to stuff them into. You settle for folding them across your chest. That's not much better, but you feel less scolding than you would with them on your hips. "Like... why. Why, Gwen. Why was this so damn important to you? Why have you been... obsessed over this," you gesture to the conspiracy board, "for months?"

"Uh... !" for a moment an indignant expression crosses her face, but she sighs, takes a deep breath, and composes herself. "OK... so... you gotta take my word on some of this, 'cuz it's gonna sound fake." You blink slowly, remembering the last time you heard some permutation of that phrase from a Gwen. "But, uh... Peter was pretty reasonable about it and we don't know each other as well as I know you... so... here goes." She clears her throat. "I'm... not from this world." She waits for you to react. You don't. She continues. "Like, I'm from Earth, but... a different Earth. I don't know how to explain it, and I'm not even a hundred on how I got here. I have a few theories, but..." she waves her hand. "Anyway. Back home is where I got my powers and became Ghost Spider. Everyone on that conspiracy board also existed back home. But they were... different. Some of them are good people here. Some of them aren't. And I thought maybe if I could see the link between them I could... find my way back, or... something." She finally looks up at you with glassy eyes. "My dad is back there, and... things aren't great, Vilina. I'm worried about him... I..." she struggles to find the words, and finally gives up and shakes her head. "Obviously this is why I couldn't tell anybody. It sounds crazy, but I SWEAR it's real."

"I believe you," you nod with no small amount of tiredness. It says something about your life in the last year that people revealing to you they're secretly someone from another dimension or in a comic book or a chaos god or whatever just sort of makes you exhausted. "I cannot begin to explain why, but I believe you."

She nods, wiping at her eyes. "Thank you."

"This is why... the visions last night. The memories of another Peter?"

Gwen nods again. "... yeah. Back home he wasn't as... he wasn't... he wasn't Spider-man. We'll put it that way. He really looked up to me, we were friends for... YEARS. I always felt like he had a crush on me, and part of me liked that attention, but... I dunno. My mind was on other stuff. Not even other people, just... the band, and school, and my dad. And then I became Ghost Spider and... well, I had even less time for him. But then he started looking up to HER without even knowing it was me. He wore a little mock costume, and... he tried fighting crime. Powerless out there just doing his best. I told him he wasn't strong enough... and I didn't phrase it right, it..." she pauses for a moment, then clears her throat to continue. "He took it the wrong way. He injected himself with something, became a monster. He crashed the prom and I... I killed him. I didn't know it was him, and I didn't mean to, but... he just stopped being a monster and his injuries caught up with him. I..." she's rocking back and forth now, head down, eyes hidden in her bangs. "I held my childhood friend Peter Parker in my arms as he died, and he told me he looked up to me. That he wanted to be like me. Seeing this world's Peter... seeing him as Spider-man. As the version of me my Peter wanted to become... ... it was a lot."

You struggle to find words. Your legs carry you over to her bed and you sit next to her, putting a concerned hand on her shoulder. "I'm so sorry, Gwen."

She puts a hand on yours, softly. "Please don't touch me right now, I don't wanna cry, and if you keep touching me I'm just gonna cry." You respect her request and back off, watching her patiently in silence. It takes a bit longer for her to compose herself again, but eventually she inhales deeply and wipes unshed tears once more. "What, uh... what else do you need to know? Please nothing about Peter."

You're... curious about the kiss, but given her emotional reaction it seems more than crass to push. Perhaps later... "What was the deal with Black Cat? Like... why was she so bitchy?"

Gwen laughs a little and shakes her head. "I honestly don't know why she was so pissed. I guess when we'd done this before it was just the two of us the first few times, and we kinda flew by the seats of our pants. Then it was the two of us and Emulator. Em stayed pretty quiet, didn't ask questions, and kinda went with the flow. I think... I think Cat just likes winging it? I dunno. Maybe she felt threatened by you," she laughs again. "I did talk about you a lot. I dunno if she's into me, or just... really likes spending time with me, or..." she shakes her head. "I really don't know. I'd have to ask her and I... don't really want to, after last night. I think she and I need to put some space between us for a while."

Your chest is tighter, and you have a hard time controlling your mouth. Words pour out before you've really approved them. "So... uh... this is a more... personal question, but... about us... ?"

Gwen nods. "Yeah, I... I dunno. Seeing Peter brought up a lot of... feelings that I think I've kinda been suppressing. I'm not gonna pretend like I haven't been... uh... curious about... us," her cheeks redden, "but... I don't know now. I just don't know." She shakes her head a few times, then turns to look you in the eyes. "Don't... don't wait around for me, Vilina. I'm..." she laughs, sardonically, "I'm a fucking mess right now. Hell, after last night, who knows what's even gonna happen to me? Maybe my ass is in hot water for screwing everything up, and I wont' be an Avenger anymore! I... I don't know."

You nod. "Okay." You want to hug her, but... she asked you not to touch her. Still, the urge is strong. Just to make her feel better. Just to take away some pain... but you're too afraid you'll add to it. "I... I still wanna be your friend, Gwen. I'm not really sure what I want otherwise, but... we haven't talked about it since that misunderstanding... and I've thought about it a lot since then... like, a lot... but between your mission with the conspiracy board and school, I just--"

"UGH, I am THROWING that thing away." She picks up a sock, balls it up, and uses spider-strength to knock it off her dresser, clattering it face-down to the floor.

"... and, uh... after last night when I saw you kissing Peter, I just..."

"Oh, you saw that, did you?" You nod. She doesn't seem guilty at all, just nodding along understandingly. "It wasn't... well, I don't know if it was anything. It was a stupid little... like, me thing. I know Peter had a crush on me. My Peter. And I just wanted to kiss him, just once... I can't apologize to my Peter. He's gone. But... Spider-man was there, and he was so understanding..."

You nod back at her. "I get it."

She shakes her head and waves her hand. "If he came swinging in and told me he was interested, I'd probably tell him the same thing I told you; steer clear. Garbage fire."

"You're not a garbage fire," you playfully shove her.

"OK, but I've got a lot of shit to work through, and I can't be... I can't be thinking about that kinda stuff right now. I just needed... I just needed some closure. If I never get to go back home, at least I could apologize to him in my own way."

"You're a good person, Gwen," you catch her eyes, "but like the rest of us, you've got a lot of things to juggle. Being a super-hero, dealing with school and your social life... something's gotta give and it shouldn't be your sanity."

She nods back, and finally wraps her arms around you in a hug. "Thank you, Vilina. I don't deserve a friend like you."

"Oh, stop it." You hug her back.

---=====---
You, Emulator (whose name you've re-learned is Ember Quade), Gwen, and Quentin are in the Chancellor's office. You haven't been here before; it's very well-appointed and looks like a fancy office you see in movies. Having been in the Chancellor of the Philip J. Coulson Memorial Academy's home before, you have to imagine the design was intentional; Mr. Stark certainly doesn't decorate his own home in rich leather and aged mahogany. The man in question is seated behind a desk, looking very official in his grey pinstripe suit and dark glasses. Or he would if he weren't lounging in it like Jarl Balgruuf. Standing off to the side is an athletic, blonde man with sparkling blue eyes that you've only seen once before in person, but plenty of times on TV and the news; Captain Steve Rogers. Captain America.

"So let's skip the small stuff and cut straight to the nitty-gritty," begins Mr. Stark, swiveling in his chair, "you guys did some independent research a few days ago and since then I've been tearing my hair out in meetings with a Lieutenant Scarfe of the NYPD and Norman Osborn."

Gwen leans forward in her chair, "I'm sorry, sir. I take full responsibility--"

Captain America holds up a forestalling hand. "Easy, Gwen. You're not 'in trouble'."

"No, thank you Captain. Far from it. I appreciate the initiative and I think you uncovered a few interesting facts here that bear further investigation." Gwen visibly relaxes, but Mr. Stark makes a froggy face. "Unfortunately, my hands are kinda tied on a lot of options right now because of... certain actions taken by certain people."

"First and foremost," Captain Rogers takes the reins, "we haven't been able to reach Harry Osborn to see if he'll press charges against Oscorp for testing experimental chemicals on him. For all we know, he was a willing participant."

"Oh, bullshit," Quentin interjects, "if he was a willing participant, why's he keep attacking Oscorp?"

Captain America sighs, rolls his eyes, and shakes his head. "That's... helpful evidence, but circumstantial at best. And again, we can't do much of anything if he won't press charges or testify or... cooperate in any way."

"What about the documents on the super-soldier serum? Er-- Erskine's formula?"

"Those are old notes, based on Dr. Erskine's work in Russia. They're unfortunately not stolen from the American government in any way, so it's not illegal for Oscorp to have them."

"Yeah, Osborn was more than happy to show us the full file. Should've seen the shit-eating grin on his face when--"

"Language, Tony." Mr. Stark holds up his hands in surrender, spinning away from the conversation in his chair. Captain Rogers returns to looking at Ember. "If we can find out how he got them... if he got them illegally, we might have something there. But that's going to take a lot of investigation, and I'm not sure I can convince Director Fury it's worth our manpower and resources. Even if it is a crime, it's a relatively small one."

"OK, well... just leak the documents online. Court of public opinion will destroy Oscorp and their business will be in the tubes!" Quentin seems to think this is a simple enough solution, and honestly sounds a little frustrated. Don't sound frustrated at Captain America! Give him the respect he deserves!

Captain Rogers shakes his head. "You're probably right, but that's not... how we do things around here, Quentin. Mob justice isn't really justice, and when we can we work through official channels. You guys are given a lot of authority and flexibility within the law. You've got a similar station to a U.S. Marshal; that's a lot of power and responsibility to wield. If you can't accomplish what you need to within those wide parameters, it probably isn't worth pursuing. It's what separates the Avengers from vigilantes."

"Or S.H.I.E.L.D.?" Quentin sasses, with a sassy eyebrow that he needs to put back down right freaking now.

"Or S.H.I.E.L.D.," Captain America nods. "We have a higher authority than you, citizen. If you'd like to change that, I invite you to sign up. I'm sure we could use someone of your talents." Captain America and Kid Omega stare eye-to-eye for what feels like an uncomfortable eternity, until Quentin finally looks away.

"Beside that," Mr. Stark takes over, "due to some questionable decisions by a couple of Avengers, Norman Osborn is convinced he knows the civilian identities of Ghost Spider and Spider-man. He failed to produce any visual proof of this, but his information is accurate, and that's dangerous enough. Spider-man would like to keep his identity a secret for his own reasons, and... Gwen, you know as well as I do we can't have your name connected to Ghost Spider beyond these walls." She nods, solemnly in response.

"Isn't that just hearsay, though? Our word against theirs, if there's no proof?" you ask.

"The same could be said for the evidence we have against Oscorp," Captain America responds. "Either way, we'd rather not have to wage a war over two sides of the truth; it isn't worth what it might cost those involved in the long run."

"So that's it," Gwen sighs, defeated, "we lose. They win. The bad guys get away."

"Don't be so discouraged, Gwen," Captain America's voice is stern, but comforting. "Spider-man is trying to reach Harry Osborn. If we can get him to come around, we've got anchors. I've also got people looking into Oscorp in general. Their hiring practices alone suggest... well, it doesn't make them look good. We'd like to see if appearances are deceiving or not for ourselves." By 'we' and 'our', you're sure he means S.H.I.E.L.D.

"Basically all it means," Mr. Stark sits up in his chair, leaning forward, "is that you guys are off the case for the time being. Keep your distance from Oscorp and let us handle this for now. If things develop, we'll bring you back in. But until then... just cool it."

Captain Rogers nods in agreement. "The more Oscorp thinks they've won, the easier it'll be to beat them in the long run."

OOC: Congratulations! You have finished issue #009 of The Young Avengers Initiative! A new issue will begin tomorrow. You've received one upgrade! Remember, once your total number of Attribute points is 40, it will be A LOT harder to gain new Attribute points, and each Attribute caps at 8. Choosing an Attribute point does not cause you to miss out on Traits. It merely means your base checks and characteristics get better, sooner. Your upgrade options are based largely around your choices for this issue and derived from your potential bonuses from last issue. Bear that in mind in the future if you want to steer Vilina in a certain direction.

As always, thank you all for participating in this quest so far! This was sort of an odd issue in terms of tone and pacing, but I'm overall happy with what happened; it accomplished much of what I set out to do, one way or another, and many stories hanging over from last year are wrapped up... ... for now. The next issue takes us into the future! Onward and upward, to greater glory! In other words... EXCELSIOR!

Wish we had this so bad.
It changes things from They Hide Something to They Hide Topic

Alright, both the +2 Grip things are good, they improve our odds of surviving a potentially fatal attack by about 17%
Last Chance is also really good for survivability, better because we already have a +8 in Luck, so we have a nice respectable 66.64% chance to hit the check, which coincidentally is the same chance we'd have to pass the first Grip check with a +5 Grip.

What? Precise just means we roll twice and take the better result.
Precise and Clumsy
Precise is a condition where your skill or attack roll is rolled twice with the better result taken and Clumsy sees you roll twice and take the worse result. No matter how many sources might provide you Precise or Clumsy status to your skill, you never roll more than two dice for any given skill check and attack roll unless explicitly mentioned otherwise.

We already have a similar trait for Medicine.
Adept - Passive Trait
Memory checks made to recall information in the field of Medicine are Precise.

Alright here me out here, Precise is all well and good but we could also just boost our focus directly by +4 with Skill Training. It's more generally applicable since it would be used for all focus checks, not just the sense motive ones, makes it so that we can hit an 18 focus check (instead of our max being a 14), and since our base check is an 8 we can't do too horrible at Focus anyway so Precise rolls aren't really helping to avert disaster.
If you guys want to focus in on Focus, let's do it right.

[X] New Trait: Skill Training - You gain four Skill Points to distribute among your skills as you see fit. Each skill can have a max bonus of +8.
-[X] +4 Focus.

Edit: It's also just mechanically better, since precise with a +2 gives us a 75% chance of beating our base check, but +6 Focus (which would be our new total) gives us an 83% chance of doing so.
Side note, I really don't know why I'm including all these percentages :lol

Interesting. IRL I'm pretty sure research on human subjects is still illegal without FDA approval (if conducted within the U.S. obviously), even if the subject(s) gave informed consent, so that tells us one of two things. Either (a) this universe has more lax laws on that subject, or (b) at least some elements in the government were aware of what Oscorp was doing. Fortunately, we have a way to find out which - as a pre-med student, Vilina should probably be reasonably familiar with legal and ethical guidelines regarding human experimentation (at least enough to do the relevant research). So, @Wightraven what does Vilina know (or what can she find out) about those regulations?

Well I don't know what your motivation is but I appreciate you saving me the time of pulling up AnyDice to do it myself!

Anyway, the math is convincing, so:

-[X] +4 Focus.
Question: does Skill Training count against our 40-points-maximum number of skill points after which gaining points will become difficult?

Uh...why wouldn't it.
Thats kind of the reason traits are valuable, they bypass the base stat cap

That applies to Attributes, not Skills. It won't be an issue.

I mean, the issue still stands that if we move against them Osborn will release Gwen and Peter's identities, and the evidence we have is only hearsay in the first place. It could cause an investigation, but the investigation isn't likely to come up with anything. Good thinking, though.

Wait, does Emulator not have a copy of the data from the servers? It occurs to me that I'm not entirely clear on how her powers work, exactly.

Read-only, I'm afraid. I don't have time to get into detail about it, but it's sort of like... she can check the electronic signals and stuff she gathers as she absorbs the energy to use for her powers. She has next to no control over what she grabs and can't, like, keep a hard copy of it.

OOC POST
Full disclosure, I spent most of the day thinking about where to take the next leg of the quest and I'm honestly not sure. Not in a sad, desperate "oh no is the quest DYING!?" kind of way. I know what the next story beat I need to hit is, a new NPC to introduce, other recently-established characters to play around with, etc. But, like, the plot structure. The threads to follow. I have none of that set up. I need a little time to think and the holidays here in America get a little hectic. This has also been a VERY busy work week for me, and I haven't had as much time to think as I usually do. I'm gonna try to start the new issue tomorrow, but in the meantime I've been meaning to get some more concrete feedback from everyone about the story for a while, and since we're in-between issues and I could use a day to gather my thoughts I figured this would be a nice time.

Feel free to post your answers here, or if that makes you uncomfortable just message them to me. I don't care if you've never voted or you vote all the time, or whatever. Any input any of you give me, I would find valuable. I specifically avoided inherently negative questions because I don't want to turn this into a salt-storm, and I... just don't require that sort of feedback at this stage. Months ago, sure. Now? I feel comfortable. Our player base speaks for itself. I'm not flawless by any means, but we're doing pretty dang good and I'm happy with where the quest is in the meta-sense. If you want to give me more critical feedback, I welcome it. Just present it in a mature fashion as has (mostly) been done previously. If time goes by and you feel like answering these questions later on, that's fine. It's not like there's a 'deadline'. This is just sort of to get me a more idea of what excites both my players and my readers so that I have a better knowledge of the kind of story we're crafting together.

- What is your favorite part of participating in this quest thread?
Quite honestly? I love the interactivity; the sheer number of write-ins. I always feel that, even if my answer doesn't win, they're read and considered.

- What has been your favorite issue and why?
The Morlocks; that was.. I don't know, it simply flowed so awesomely.

- What was your favorite scene/post and why?
Two things: The dance - especially that BAM moment with Gwen - and the discussion with Logan in his apartment; simply because it was soooo far out of Vil's comfort zone.

- Who are three or more of your favorite NPCs and why?
This is massively difficult; we have such a large char base; too large, almost, since we don't see most of them regularly. I adore this Loki, but he's been missing. Gwen is awesome, and so very broken. I'd love to have Vil hang out more with Shadowcat; once upon a time, she was our best friend, and now? Ol' Logan is cool simply because of out of context-ness for Vil's life.

- Which NPCs would you like to see get more interaction time?
Er. Kitty, Loki, Logan, our group. Spider-Man. As long as it doesn't cost us interaction time with Gwen and Other Gwen.

- Who has been your favorite antagonist/villain?

Professor X. I like shadow-y, cabal-y meta-antagonists.

- If you could add one Marvel character to this quest who hasn't shown up yet, who would it be?
None. Don't get me wrong, there are tons of cool characters - but we're drowning *already*.
