OOC: Close, interesting vote, guys! Really appreciated the notations and write-in options. Some clever stuff this update!
Vilina
So, what happened over the summer, anyhow?
Spider-man
Oh shit, did you not hear?
There's that casual swearing again. You don't mind, obviously, you live with Quentin. But it's just not like him and it's part of what keeps worrying you.
Spider-man
I figured with everyone at the school and how public all of it was you'd have heard.
Vilina
I kind of kept myself news-free while on vacation. It WAS a vacation, after all.
Spider-man
Kinda wish I could attend the school just to claim vacation once in a while, lol
There's another long pause, you assume he's doing well in Fortnite. At least, you hope for his sake he is. You spend a little time just staring out the window, watching New York go by. It's a calm Sunday for the city, but it's never REALLY quiet. The whole of New York is abuzz with life and energy, with people going to and from their destinations, talking with friends, trying to sell something or otherwise just shuffling through the day. It hasn't quite been long enough for you to have forgotten what that's like, but you recognize that you're starting to. They are unlikely to be in a low-key state of constant vigilance. They are unlikely to be ready to jump into action at a moment's notice. Some of them, possibly. There may even be powerful mutants or other gifted people among them... but they haven't taken up the call like you have. Like your friends have. Like Peter has. Ultimately, you wonder if your concern over his behavior is unfounded. Sure, Rocket warned you about the klyntar and what it might do to him... but with the mounting pressures of battling impossible powers for the safety of New York and its people... Spider-man isn't even really a local hero, like Mr. Cage or the Daredevil of Hell's Kitchen. He doesn't just keep an eye on The Bronx or Red Hook. He takes it upon himself to help ALL of New York. Maybe even New Jersey! Your phone finally pings and you see at least part of what was delaying him was the MONSTER text message he wrote.
Spider-man
Uh, the short version, since... I'm kinda tired of getting into it... is that MGH hit the streets and HARD. With how unpredictable it is, I had to make it priority one. Letting something THAT dangerous go unchecked in MY city was NOT a freakin option. Unfortunately detective stuff isn't exactly my strong suit. I'm bright enough, sure, but I'm more about science and technology than solving a riddle. It took me some time to put the pieces together, and a lot more damage got done in the meantime. I really kicked my own ass over it for a while. Still do, but... eh, I talked to someone for a bit about it. They're trying to help me let go. That's easier said than done, but... I'm working on it. Anyhow. All the supply chains traced back to this chemically-enhanced overblown mob hitter from Philly who was trying to make a name for himself out here. Tombstone. He put up a fight, but I had a little help from Daredevil and eventually we brought him to justice.
Spider-man
Sad that partnership didn't last longer. I feel like he could use my help, or ANYONE'S help, but he's just pushing everybody away lately, even harder than usual.
Vilina
Wow. Sounds really, REALLY rough. Sorry you had to go through that.
Spider-man
It is what it is. It's what we signed up for, right?
That was quite the info-dump! The bus lurches to another stop and you realize you're near the barber shop where Mr. Cage told you to meet him. Somehow you thought you'd have more time to grab a bite to eat or explore Harlem a bit in the daylight before talking to Mr. Cage, but perhaps traffic was heavy. You weren't really paying attention. The important thing is that you're here now, and only a scant few minutes early.
Vilina
For better or worse, lol.
Vilina
Anyway, I gotta go. Have a meeting with our new chaperone. Have a good rest of your day!
Spider-man
You too!
You exit the bus and make the short walk to the very classically-adorned little barber shop recessed into the block. The name "POP'S" is painted on the large front window in golden letters, and behind it sits two men playing chess. The bell rings as you enter, and you see Mr. Cage standing tall and quite comfortable in the middle of the shop. Otherwise, it actually seems pretty quiet for a Sunday. Only one other person is getting their hair cut in a chair toward the back, a young man working carefully on keeping his sides even.
"Hey, Vilina."
"Hey, Mr. Cage. Thanks for meeting me."
"You can call me Luke, and no problem. Sorry I couldn't talk sooner; I had some... business this morning. I'm hopin' it's nothin' too urgent?"
"No, not at all! Just... some concerns I have about a mutual friend that I don't think she should hear coming from me."
"Right," he nods, somewhat knowingly. Perhaps he hasn't been as blind as you were worried he was. "Did you wanna haircut while you were here?"
Oh! You actually hadn't considered that as an option. 'Barber shops' are typically more for men, traditionally, while 'salons' and 'hair dressers' are more for women. But it's not like you keep your hair very complicated, and... heck, it's 2019.
Do You Want A Haircut?
[ ] No, thank you.
[ ] Sure, just a trim.
[ ] All right! Let's try something stylish!
[ ] Despite the fact that winter is coming, let's go short!
